I want to like this, I really do, because I love her, and the top is colorful, and I like her hair, and she always has perfect makeup.

But the length is just too long.

      • jen_vasm

70s House dress. And not even a nice one. For shame, Chanel.

        • Carleenml

I don’t know about you all, but first Lucy and now this. It’s like nothing is going right today!!!!!!!!!

    • kimmeister

Oh dear. This dress is unsalvageable, even by Cate.

      • Trent

Right? It’s all very Cate Goes To The Ren Faire. Even the hair is blah.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Make the sleeves cap sleeves, or cut them off, with a shorter pencil skirt and maybe this would work better. Clearly Cate wasn’t calling in the fashion heavy weights for this event.

    • RussellH88

Even with all of her powers, Cate can only make this a “slight ok”.

    • Glam Dixie

It’s too Craft Store up top, a little too full in the skirt and sleeves and a bit too long. She, however still manages to look lovely.

    • In_Stitches

The sleeves are just so sad. Lop those off and give it a thin gold belt to help marry the top to the bottom and it’d be passable. The hair would still be an issue though…as would those pumps.

    • hughman

If Maria made a dress from the Von Trapp’s melted Legos.

      • halleygee

I was just gonna post, she looks like she should be carrying a guitar case and running through the Swiss Alps.

      • Anna

“It’s the dress. You’ll have to put on another one before you go to the premiere.

But I don’t have another one. All my designer dresses were given to the poor.

        What about this one?

The poor didn’t want this one.”

        • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

          SLAYING it.

        • R.A.

          LMAO!! Perfection.

      • DuBey2

But even in 1975?? I hated the light blue dress Julie Andrews wore in the gazebo scene. And it WAS this exact same shape.

        • decormaven

“But somewhere in my youth or childhood, I must have done something good.”

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Or in this case, she saw something nasty in the woodshed and frowed up all over her very pretty frock and had to wear this schmatta instead.

      • Introspective

was just coming on here to say that fraulein maria boarded (crashed into?) the partridge family bus. bitter kittens think alike.

    • James

      wtf are those sleeves?

      • Aurumgirl

        That’s the question, right there.

    • Danielle

      CLUNKY.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Lose those hideous sleeves, add a kicky little belt, shorten the hem, and trade the black pumps for some colorful strappy sandals. THEN you’d have a great outfit and nobody would ever notice your JBF hair, dear.

    • lunchcoma

This looks like something made in a Sewing for Beginners class.

    • Ashleigh

      MEH

    • Jaeda Laurez

It looks homely, and Cate is not homely.

    • Frank_821

      OMG

    • FibonacciSequins

I think I made this dress in 8th grade Home Ec.

The only thing I like about it is the beading. I guess she was trying for all-ages fun, but this comes off as juvenile.

It doesn’t make Cate any less gorgeous – I’m not sure if any dress has that kind of power.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I don’t love it by any stretch, but the pockets help make it slouchy-cool to me.

    • ktr33

This is CHANEL? Sorry Coco! You don’t deserve this!

      • Carleenml

oh, I stopped saying this ages ago.

    • TM

Aw, I actually love it. It looks easy and cool and fun and I would legit wear it every day. (And it appears to have pockets…and gosh pockets make dresses amazing.)

    • WhyEden

Kind of phoning it in, no?

      • Alyssa

I was going to post the same thing!

    • Mink Carlyle

I have no words for how horrible this is, even on the model. Someone actually got paid to design this monstrosity? I’m hoping at least Cate got paid a lot to wear it; there’s no other excuse.

    • DuBey2

Is there a point where we can demand that they stop calling themselves “Chanel” over there?

      • formerlyAnon

THIS. They are well on the way to ruining an iconic name for me. With the occasional exception they aren’t even earning the rights to “Chanel-Lite.”

    • KayEmWhy

What is this? Amish Chic? No thank you.

    • crash1212

Yikes. I just bought a dress for $16.00 over the weekend and it looks like the exact same fabric as the skirt and sleeves on this “Chanel”…either I got a great deal or this looks chip…in a chip way. I can’t even discuss the bathmat on the bodice. Chanel…do better.

      • demidaemon

That Cate, she isn’t stupid. She knows her limits and what Uncle Karl should have burned.

    • KT

Not even the power of Cate can make this work.

    • Little_Olive

I was sorta on board, and then I realized it’s her FACE that’s doing all the work. There isn’t a hairstyle this woman can’t carry.
I’m not mad a t the dress, and there is something relaxed about it that I like, but, again, only because it’s her.

    • Qitkat

This is the sort of beading that gives me OCD. It creates a look that’s blurry, it looks like the beads all got together and got drunk and organized themselves loosely into colorblocking, inspired by those crocheted granny flowers. It’s too symmetrical, and yet, not symmetrical at all, and, further, yet, not organic and not abstract enough to be interesting to stare at. Of the dress itself, we shall not speak.

    • Carleenml

I can’t believe she turned down the harem pant portion of the outfit.

    • conniemd

Kate appears to really like more old fashioned hand embroidery, beading, etc. on her clothing (as opposed to sequins). Her clunky looks seem to involve that kinda Heidi/Maria kind of old-fashioned

    • boweryboy

I would love it without the sleeves.

      • MilaXX

        or a different shaped sleeve.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

If that’s not one of the strangest dresses I ever did see…

    • appliquer

      A rare miss by Cate.

    • ashtangajunkie

On anyone else, this would be the worst thing I ever did see. On Cate, I just mostly wish it was sleeveless. Cate power.

      • Shawn EH

She’s making it work for her.

    • unbornfawn

Yank off the sleeves, make it a straight tight fitting skirt, belt that matches the bodice and you might have something there. As it is, dowdy.

    • MilaXX

I don’t dislike it and I realize it’s Chanel, but that dress looks somewhat ordinary for Cate & especially a film premiere.

    • Frankie Carter

      Iron please

    • Shalhevet

She looks cute in a young girl in conservative dress way. I think it looks swingy and effortless, wide sleeves and all.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

“I just ran over after leading the cows to the pasture for spring! Yodelayheehoo!”

      • demidaemon

It does have a bit of Heidi/Alps-esqueness to it.

    • Grumpy Girl

I’d like to think she had to sit on the floor with a bunch of children to watch the movie–or at least do something with the children–so this would be perfect for that kind of movement/activity.

    • NMMagpie

      Bummer. This looks home sewn.

    • TwiddlyStun

I inadvertently made a “yeesh” noise as I scrolled down this one. Ahem. Excuse me.

    • B_C_J

      Ouch! This is ugly.

    • CanIbeFrank

I think I made that same dress as a 4-H project for the county fair back in 1979…..

    • DagnyReardon

All that glitters is not gold. All that is Chanel is not pretty.

    • LadyVimes

Sometimes even queens make poor choices. Queens, they’re just like us!

    • Annmarie Kane

This dress and Frye boots were my uniform in 1977 and it’s Cate so yes, carry on.

    • demidaemon

Fabulous face and hair. Classic shoes. Schmatta of a dress. She’s trying to work it and almost getting there, but even the power of Cate can’t save this dress.

    • Man Dala

It’s a bit on the Austrian-countryside matronly side. Pass.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I keep thinking about putting crayon shavings between two pieces of waxed paper and then ironing it as an elementary school craft project.

    • Hans Christian Schrei

I never coment but… i just opened a bunch of tabs on my browser, and when I got to this one, I thought it was Martha Stewart which… burns…

    • Yoshio

      Frumpy frumpster.

    • Aurumgirl

Yes, she’s very beautiful; yes, she’s so elegant. But if I have to be the one to say it I will: this woman cannot just “wear anything” and make it look good. In fact, I hope her stylists stop putting her in things that are just damned ugly in an attempt to demonstrate that statement. Some very expensive clothing goes to hell with her in tow, and this dress is just another example of that. Ugly and unflattering, and she deserves so much better.

    • livesarah

Sometimes I don’t understand the overwhelming opinion of the BKs. I’ve seen plenty worse Chanel dresses get praised. This one isn’t amazing (although no-one pulls off the black and multiple colour combos quite like Cate). But it’s not bad, and she doesn’t look bad. If I’d seen only the runway photo I might have been tempted to call it ugly, but to me she looks both elegant and comfortable.

    • MarissaLG

Sorry Uncle Karl, but it’s time to retire.

    • formerlyAnon

I like her best in somewhat androgynous, in not-girly casual and in drop dead glamour. This fits none of those categories.

    • marlie

Not even Cate can save this art smock of a dress. Though her head looks easy-breezy-pretty.

    • Trish Austad

This dress is a cure for insomnia. Bo-ring!

    • d4divine

      I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either. #discogoverness

    • JynxTheCat

      none for me thanks.

    • deech_sea

It looks messy. I prefer the way the model is wearing it with harem pants.
