Anne Hathaway on the Set of “The Intern”

Posted on June 25, 2014

Sometimes we envy the stars’ magical abilities. Granted, their magic is very limited in scope, but if you ever found yourself needing to grow your hair ten inches in two months (which: why would you?), then you could’ve probably used some of that celebrity witchcraft.

Anne-Hathaway-The-Intern-On-Set-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Anne Hathaway films a scene the set of her new movie “The Intern” in Brooklyn, New York wearing Laurence Dacade sandals.

Okay, fine. It’s a wig. Or, more likely, various pieces worked into her real hair. Even so, that’s pretty masterfully done. She looked like this less than two months ago. That’s some killer weave action. She looks good, though. It took us a long time to accept the pixie cut for her. We did eventually come around to liking it, mainly because she set it of fairly well with her style choices (most of the time), but she definitely looks better with longer hair, to our eyes.

Also: those pants are tragic. The sandals are hot, except for the fringe part.

    • Gatto Nero

      The hair is masterfully done.
      I prefer the pixie, though.

      • Anna

I prefer the pixie too. As an aside, I’ve also seen set pictures of Swinton in her latest role with extensions: DO NOT LIKE at all.

        • Bridget Smith

She should either have pixie-short hair, or the EPIC MASS OF HAIR from Only Lovers Left Alive. No middle-ground, normal-person haircuts for her.

          • Anna

Yes, they made her look so AVERAGE, UGH :-(. Jennifer Aniston hair DOES NOT belong on Swinton.

          • Gatto Nero

Nothing middle-ground or normal-person for La Swinton.

        • Kent Roby

I just googled “Swinton” and gave an audible gasp at all the wonderful images that popped up.

          • Anna

She’s in a gorgeous short film for Mercedes I watch at least once a day.

            • Gatto Nero

              Just found it on YouTube.
              Wow.

      • Kent Roby

Yes, I also prefer the darling little curly-haired pixie over Ms. Hathaway.

        • Gatto Nero

I see what you did there.

        • PastryGoddess

          *rimshot*

      • colleenjanel

Another vote for the pixie. With the longer hair, she’ll never not look like Princess Mia. At least with the pixie, she looks like an edgier non-princess adult.

    • Feathers McGraw

I can not even slightly tell how that hair happened, does anybody have more specific ideas?

      • rkdgal

If you look closely, you might be able to see some shorter pieces (her real hair, I believe) laying on top. My best guess is that longer pieces have been woven into her hair just underneath the top layer to create the length. It’s very well done, but you can see a contrast in sheen and even a little bit of color between her hair at the front and the longer length. To me, that reads weave. But given my limited knowledge of this stuff, it could also actually be magic.

    • http://www.gregmce.com Greg McE

The best wig/extension/weave is the one that you don’t think is a wig/extension/weave. Nicely chosen and executed.

    • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

I feel the opposite about her below-the-waist situation. I like the pants but hate the sandals. I will never like fringe, especially on bags and shoes.

      • fursa_saida

The problem is the pants are too short, or at least too short for those shoes. In the shot that cuts off below her hips, I think she looks great. In all the others I’m deeply unhappy about them.

        • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

Yeah, I like the cut of the pants but they should definitely be longer and not worn with sandals.

          • conniemd

See, I hate the wide bell bottom type cut of the pants in a short length. Being that wide, they need to be longer. If they were cigarette pants, they would look fine at that length and with the sandal.

      • smayper

        yup.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I always liked Hathaway with long hair, although I too have grown to like the pixie. The pants remind me of those fashion mistakes we’ve all had.

      • Danielle

I loved her long hair, but the pixie was also growing on me. Her long hair was what got her the role in The Princess Diaries, because the director’s daughter said she had “princess hair”.

    • Meg

      So many polka dots.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Costuming motif.

      • leahpapa

How else would we know that characters are connected, if it weren’t being subliminally telegraphed to us through costuming choices? I see her talking to, hugging, and relating with that little girl, but I wasn’t sure that they had a connection until I saw that they were both wearing polka dots ;)

If this is portraying a mother-daughter relationship, I have to say it’s eerily accurate, at least in my limited experience. I get accused of matching my toddler daughter’s and my clothing all the time, when the reality is: I dress myself (obviously), and I usually pick 2-3 outfits for her to choose among, and I think whatever mood I’m in for my own dress tends to get echoed in what I pick out for her? In any event, I always had an “ewww” reaction to matchy-matchy mom-and-tot pairs, but I can see now how easily it can happen. Though Freud would still probably have a field day with it.

    • Mrs. C

      That little girl is adorable.

    • hyperionic

Seems kind of dry and frizzy though.

      • colleenjanel

I noticed that too. Her hair (that you can see) is shiny and healthy, and the weave is pretty dry looking. Not a great blend, IMO.

    • clatie

      I like the pants. (ducks.)

      • Cheryl

I was loving the pants until I saw how short they were.

    • Alyssa

The best hair in these pictures, IMO, is the little girl’s! What I would do to have curls like those…

      • Anna

Her hair is PERFECT! As someone who has poker straight hair that just hangs there, I envy anyone with texture. Straight hair is not all it’s cracked up to be.

        • Daisy Walker

I used to have hair like that, though it’s changed as I’ve gotten older. I would’ve traded you any day, any time, any place…and you would’ve cancelled that trade 5 mins. after the swap.

          • Anna

Confession: Up until I chopped off most of my hair about 6 months ago, I used to get a body wave (aka that horrifying ’80s word that starts with “p” and ends with “erm”) because I loved having the texture.

ETA: I get what you’re saying though. Grass is always greener!

            • Daisy Walker

Grass is definitely always greener. On the rare occasion my stylist straightens my hair, I love it because I can actually run my fingers through it. Like “real hair,” I always say. Then about an hour later, I realize that straight hair makes my nose look bigger! I know it’s just perception, but still. LOL

    • Danielle

I much prefer the little girl’s outfit.

    • Janet B

I’d be thrilled to grow my hair 10 inches in two months. I’ve been trying to grow out my hair for six months, hating it almost every day. Her hair length magically appearing on me would be fun and a relief.

      Hate the shoes.

      • Funkykatt

        Amen

      • smayper

always wanted the button in the back of my head that you could push and the hair would either come out or go back in. Do they still sell those dolls?

        • Janet B

I had one of those, she had red hair.

        • Rhonda Shore

Tressy dolls. I don’t think so.

    • semirose

      Those shoes….

    • lexilexi

Agree about her looking better with long hair. Her features are huge – eyes, mouth.. and I think the long hair certainly softens her appearance.

    • Vanessa Reyes

      Love the little girl’s bag.

      • kbshee

Yes yes yes. My first reaction was ‘that doesn’t really go with Anne’s outfit’ then I realized it was the little girl’s. Want.

        • Bootsy

Looks like a Built NY lunch tote. Those are amazing. Incredibly durable & washable– the one I bought 8 years ago for kids’ lunch is finally showing signs of wear.

    • jonnyf8

Is she pregnant? She looks good. The short was fun but she really is gorgeous with longer hair.

    • smh4748

      Those are some Tragic Pants.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The child’s outfit, however, is adorable.

      • FibonacciSequins

        Totally and completely.

      • SugarSnap108

I am jealous of that child’s style, poise, and hair.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

And satchel. I love her satchel!

      • TropiCarla

I will be reproducing on my toddler. LOL

        • mixedupfiles

I will be reproducing on myself.

    • schadenfreudelicious

I can never not see a horse’s tail when i look at those shoes, ergo a horse’s arse..so no

    • Jessica Freeman

I was all prepared to swoon over the pants. Then they stopped at the ankles. I has a sad.

      • Tami from Seattle

I had the same reaction. They needed a couple more inches.

      • Cheryl

Yep, I was really liking those pants until I saw how short they were.

    • msdamselfly

Seeing this, I realize that I like her much better with short hair

    • Wink

Shorten those pants and she’ll be wearing gauchos!

    • MightyMarshal

Now I need to know who did that weave and how. That’s impressive. Love the shoes, hate the pants, she’s much less insufferable with long hair.

    • Raspberry2012

The outfit looks like an intern’s outfit, so nice job by the wardrobe department!

The wig makes me realize I really DO love her pixie cut way more than when she had it long.

    • Courtney

Love the little girl’s outfit. Anne’s is definitely a case of scrolldown fug.

    • decormaven

Polka dot blouse and fringe sandals? That’s an odd pairing to me. I do love the heel on those sandals, those.

    • gloriana232

The pants are kind of awkward, but I like them? Maybe as somebody who loathes trousers because they’re so tricky to fit, or because I’m sick of women wearing ill-fitted TIGHT TIGHT pants, I like going back to a looser silhouette, with more interesting details than just “HERE’S MY BUTT AND CROTCH.” I really like the length over those shoes. The outfit’s cute!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I love the “mommy and me” polka dots. Reminds me (longingly) of when I used to be able to dress my own daughters however I chose!

      • Grumpy Girl

Awww, a fantasy I could never fulfill. Even as an infant, she would be cranky when she didn’t like her outfit (invariably the cute one I liked). My son was much more agreeable, but we primarily coordinated just because navy and green were staples in my wardrobe.

    • marlie

Those sandals are hiddy, and the pants are hella unflattering. Annie looks cute with longer hair. Also, this goes to show that you CAN get weaves/hairpieces that don’t look like bargain-basement costume wigs.

    • marlie

Also, Anne’s little costar is adorable.

    • Bad Idea Jeans

That little girl is like the Mini-Me version of Keri Russell. SO VERY ADORABLE, plus very well put together for someone who is only just old enough to pick out her own clothes.

    • SugarSnap108

I’m guessing it’s a movie about a smart, feisty single mom whose life has been marred by questionable taste in men and pants.

    • Paula Pertile

The hair wasn’t enough – she had to do the shoes too. Icky shoe fringe. And what’s with the polka dot mesh thing. She sets off my me-ow meter every time. The little girl is super cute though – nice accessory.

    • lsaspacey

Wow, these pictures really made it clear to me that the pixie is made for her. She seems less special this way.

      • Glammie

Yeah, her pixie has really grown on me. That said, very well done extensions. If I didn’t know, would not have guessed.

    • quiltrx

I like the waistline details of the pants, actually…they just go all bad after that.
The hair situation is incredibly well-done, I agree. But I think she looks more “something special” with the pixie, and I hope she keeps it.

    • joancarol

She got a weave for her shoes too.

    • surfergirl70

I don’t mind the pants, but not with those shoes. And that is a masterful job on her hair.

    • Tracy_Flick

Is she supposed to be a working mom? Reality demands some well-worn department-store flats.

      • Sofia

i agree. since this is a costume and i presume that she’s supposed to be “ordinary” i don’t feel compelled to critique her attire and whether it’s flattering or not. it rings true for me that she is not perfectly turned out. some days “serviceable” is the best we can manage.

    • Sophie

Hate the trousers and the sandals, and I prefer her with shorter hair. I am not happy.

    • kimmeister

This is officially the first time I’ve ever seen pleated pants in which the pleat is sewn down and runs all the way to the ankle. Weird. I think the sandals are gross.

      • Grumpy Girl

Oh gosh, my mom had many of those back in the days when polyester was groovy.

    • Imasewsure

Gotta disagree on the hair…. looks much better short to me…. ugly ugly pants… sandals too fringy at stated by our dear uncles

    • boweryboy

Everything south of her waist is tragic. And that little girl is all kinds of adorbable.

    • Cheryl

I liked the pants until I saw the length…..too short. Had they been longer she would have had a Katherine Hepburn thing going on, maybe not the waist zippers, but the silhouette. As for the hair, it’s very well done, but I liked her short hair, which brought to mind the other Hepburn.

    • MilaXX

This is why I complain about bad weaves because when done right, they can look great. I think the acceptance of weaves and wigs has made folks lazy and many are will to accept, cheap plastic look things. I want Janet Jackson Pleasure Principal levels of weaves all the time. Still I prefer her with short hair. She looks ordinary with longer hair.

I like the pants here, and I’d like the shoes without the fringe on the back.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

” I want Janet Jackson Pleasure Principal levels of weaves”

I just love this image – and the fact that I totally got what you meant.

        • MilaXX

because that hair was laid, bouncing and behaving.

          • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Nobody could whip their hair like Janet in her heyday.

        • MilaXX

Nerd that I am, the reason why the Darmock episode of Star Trek NG is one of my favs is because I think/remember in pictures & metaphors. I love it when people get me like that. :-)

    • lobsterlen

The “intern” in this movie is Robert DeNiro?

    • Joanna

Nope – It a bit to get used to, but I came around to preferring her pixie cut.

    • Sabin

Ugh, those shoes would have been in a Whitesnake video thirty years ago. On a poor-man’s Tawny Kitaen. Which is not a good thing.

    • Jacquelina La Bomba

      Kira?

    • elirt

A girlfriend of mine gets extensions and it’s freaky to see her go from pix to long (just like this). I was discussing hair extensions with my mother in law. She had no idea they existed and actually thought Brittany Spears magically group long hair 2 months after she shaved it.

    • Jeanettesca

Yay! I had the exact same reaction as TLo without needing any prompts.

Look at me … I’m LEARNING! Thanks, you fabulous bitches.

    • sweetlilvoice

The little girl’s outfit is cuter. Poor Anne. Good things she gets a large paycheck for wearing such ugly clothes and shoes. She is so talented though.

    • Shelby

I’m going to just reiterate the general consensus: yucky shoes, tragic pants, and SUCH A CUTE LITTLE GIRL!

    • GorgeousThings

Kinda hard to criticize the look, since it’s a costume for the movie.
Hell, who am I kidding? We bitter kittens can criticize anything!

    • smayper

      I want the toddler’s outfit. And I’m 50.

    • R.A.

I am surprised to see her wearing leather shoes. I thought she was vegan?

      • Glammie

I thought she was a vegetarian–did she go vegan? Shoes, I think, are the killer ethical choice–there’s leather or there’s stuff made from petrochemicals, unless you can source organic espadrilles and are willing to wear them all the time.

        • R.A.

I had heard she was a vegan but perhaps I was mistaken. Regardless, I adore her for being a friend to animals. And yes I agree, sometimes you just can’t win. So I will just continue to demand better choices!

    • Jen

I scrolled about halfway down thinking that she looks better than she’s looked in ages, before realising it’s the long hair. Suits it much better IMO.

    • alyce1213

Christina Hendricks should get the name of the hairstylist/weave expert on that film and put that person on retainer for life. It can be done!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Those pants are too short. Period. I can’t unsee it. It’s all I can see. IT BURNS!

    • LadyVimes

Those pants are just too wide. There’s wide leg and then there’s pleated wide leg, which translates to MAKES WIDE TURNS.

    • ktr33

This is my neighborhood. That is all.

    • jif

Ugh, interns who can afford Laurence Dacade. Even if they’re hypothetical interns…

    • Heather

My question is: is she an intern in 1992?

    • AMartel

Sandals look like they’re fresh from the half-off bin at Sears. The pants are too short but otherwise fine. If it was winter. The shirt is too buttoned-up and that stick pin. NO to the stick pin. Hair needs to be longer before it is back to being acceptable.

    • Skippymom1

She always looks as tho’ she hasn’t recovered yet from filming “Les Mis”. I did like the pixie better.

    • JynxTheCat

I cant believe some costumer got paid to put this outfit together. is there no pride in Hollywood any more?
