Anna Kendrick for ELLE Magazine

Posted on June 12, 2014

Well, look who got herself all dolled up sexy-like and everything.

Anna-Kendrick-ELLE-Magazine-July-2014-Issue-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Anna Kendrick covers the July 2014 issue of ELLE magazine photographed by Carter Smith in a Dolce&Gabbana dress accessorized with Jamie Wolf earrings and a Vhernier ring.

On her sex appeal: “I’ve never felt like I’ve exactly traded on my looks. “When I was a teenager, I was an ultralate bloomer, and my mom would say it was a blessing, because it means you never have to wonder if guys are only interested in you because you’ve got boobs. I would have been thrilled if guys were interested in me because of my boobs!. Similarly, I think I’m lucky that I’ve never had a crisis about whether the only reason I’m successful is because I’m crazy hot. It’s not something that crosses my mind.”

Good heavens, Miss Kendrick. You’re beautiful.

“Big haired, cat-eyed ’60s sex kitten” is such a style cliche, especially when it comes to celebrity editorials. But the line separating style cliche from classic style is so fine and moves around so much. Maybe this is just something every starlet has to toy with at least once; like the Marilyn thing. But cliche or classic, she looks pretty fantastic here. LOVING the retro Norma Kamali bikini and she looks amazing in that Dior.

    • RussellH88

Oh wow, who would have thought she could work the Lana Del Rey drag?

    • miscorrections

Last shot she looks like Buffy Jr.

    • TM

She looks gorgeous… but for some weird reason (perhaps because I primarily see her as comedic actress) it feels like Zoolander-esque intentional posing to me. Gah, I don’t mean it to!

      • Karen Belgrad

It’s the wide eyes in every pic… Almost too wide. She needed to do a little more “smizing”

        • Kitten Mittons

And the really random bunny. That too.

          • marlie

I just noticed that. That’s… weird.

            • Kitten Mittons

Weirder that they put the bunny on a big fur rug.

“Here’s me and Ms. Fluffer Nutter, just cuddling up on former Mr. Cotton Tail.”

            • Alloy Jane

Pretty much the first thing that caught my eye. Kinda sadistic if you ask me :-/

            • Kitten Mittons

Yes, I see several of us had the same thought. But they added the watermelon, so it’s no longer sadistic. Right?

            • Kristin McNamara

Where did you pull the name Fluffer Nutter?? I have a friend whose cat is ACTUALLY named that!

            • Kitten Mittons

That’s funny! I don’t know about the rest of the world but growing up my best friend’s family used to make sandwiches with peanut better and that awful marshmallow spread, and they called them fluffer nutter sandwiches. She said she would name a pet that if she ever got one, but she never did. So it kind of became a general pet name for her potential animal.

            • gabbilevy

FYI: The fluffernutter is on its way to becoming the state sandwich of Massachusetts. Somerville, Mass., has a whole festival dedicated to fluff every year and they’re a beloved local tradition. Fluff on!

            • Kitten Mittons

That is fascinating, and also makes sense. Her mom was from the northeast somewhere. Fluff on indeed.

            • cat772

Haha! How did I look at that photo twice and NOT see the bunny???

          • Leah Elzinga

ahaha! I didn’t even notice! Thanks so much for pointing that out; it made my day.

        • TM

Ahhhh, I think you’re on to something.

        • Wink

Tyra Banks would be all over her for giving the same look in every photo.

      • Rhonda Shore

She is gorgeous, but she’s also funny, so as you say, i too feel like there’s a tongue-in-cheek aspect to that front cover vamp pose, which makes her even more likeable.

        • TM

Yahhh, it’s straddling a line there. I hope you’re right though and it’s intentional because then I really like it!

      • Trent

Yeah, I like the clothes (especially the Dior, which surprises me) but the posing just seems awkward and Lea Michele-y. She’s an attractive woman, but pulling off Ann Margaret Sex Kitten is just not in her wheelhouse.

        • conniemd

I posted before I read you that I also saw the Ann Margret vibe.

          • formerlyAnon

Me too. I think it’s an Ann Margret vibe fail, though.

      • Aurumgirl

You’re telling me. Just what the hell is happening in that second photo?

        • mila_8

Looks like she farted while trying to get off the table. At least she stayed in character.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

      BUNNY.

I mean. Yes, the Dior is amazing.

      • kimmeister

That was my first reaction too! Wook at da bunny!

        • Sarah

Yep. Me too. Also, laying on a FUR by the POOL rubbing a BUNNY and eating WATERMELON. Jealous.

          • SugarSnap108

Just said EXACTLY the same thing.

            • Sarah

I missed the SILVER PLATTER. I will say I hope the fur is faux, though it probably isn’t. Viewed in that light, it is kind of like a cruel horror show for the bunny. “Look, little man – you TOO could be flayed for me to lay upon.”

          • kimmeister

You can keep the watermelon and fur, I’ll take her ability to look like that in that bathing suit. Deal?

      • SugarSnap108

The bunny is everything. It makes me accept that a woman in a bathing suit is lying on a bearskin rug, poolside, with a bunny, while eating watermelon served on a silver platter.

      • Wink

In the bunny shot, she’s wearing a retro bikini. So, is the art director trying to make us think “Playboy”… as in Playboy bunny? (Or am I just over-thinking it… as we tend to do with these photos!)

        • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

That was actually my first thought too.

          • smayper

Mine too. But then I thought about the killer bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and got very worried about what might be about to happen to her bikini top.

            • Alloy Jane

              HUGE! SHARP! TEETH!!!

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

She looks gorgeous, and behold! A decent looking Dior!

Not quite getting the fur rug and bunny hanging poolside with a watermelon tray.

    • Danielle

      I’ll be in my bunk.

    • merciblahblah

Who knew?! I’m loving it on her, and I love her ever since she was a guest jeedge on So You Think You Can Dance. She is smart and self-deprecating and funny as hell.

      • RussellH88

I remember when she was getting Oscar buzz for Up in the Air, when the only other popular thing she had done was Twilight. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes that a girl from Twilight was getting Oscar buzz, but she was so great in the movie (And she got a Tony nomination as a child) that I instantly fell in love.

And then there’s Pitch Perfect, I mean, come on.

        • Scot Meacham Wood

ok – dig a little deeper . . . and watch her “on stage” in an movie called “Camp” (2003) . . . . brilliant!

          • Tom Robinson

Yes! One of my all time favorite scenes is from Camp.

“She’s f*%ked. I’m ready. And the show must go on!”

      • Liz

I too loved her as as judge on SYTYCD! I had no idea she was funny.

      • Allison Angier

Her “super bowl” commercial for Newcastle was a scream too. A guy fake-fixes her hair the whole time. I bought that beer just for that commercial, which has to be a first for me.

    • lbl

*shakes head* This isn’t working for me.

    • MilaXX

I don’t really care for the all around heavy liner. I get the look they were going for, but the only picture I really like is the purple floral one.

      • marlie

Heh, the purple floral one is the only one that I *don’t* like.

      • lundibleu

That’s my favourite too, she looks fab in the Ricci, and the pose there just makes me think that she was a couple of shutter clicks away from cracking up, falling about laughing and opening a bottle of beer.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s not giving so much face, but she looks amazing in all those pictures.

    • hughman

      “Be Me” – Raquel Welch

    • mjude

      ann-margaret realness. love

      • Anna

        Ha! Jinx.

        • Raspberry2012

          Threesies!

    • Anna

I’m getting Ann Margaret in Viva Las Vegas from the bikini shot, love it. Love her!

      • mjude

        Ha! :)

        • Raspberry2012

          A-hee!

    • Nancer

I think she looks beautiful, if a bit vacant.

    • marlie

Anna Kendrick bugs me a little, but she’s really pretty here. The 60s bombshell look suits her, and I like most of the looks that they put her in. Now if she’d given more than one expression to the camera, we’d have a winner here.

      • Daisy Walker

She bugs me a lot. I don’t get the buzz about her.

    • kimmeister

Does anyone else see “Manolo Blahnik” and see “Mayim Bialik” instead, or is that just me?

      • Sarah

        No but NOW I will.

        • kimmeister

Proof that I watched Blossom, and that I have a punster’s habit if seeing words in more than one way.

      • Noah

        Other way around for me.

      • boweryboy

        All the time.

    • BLauD

She was made for this styling. I really do love her, even though I can’t pinpoint why. In fact, sometimes she bugs.

    • Sarah

One does not need a period after an exclamation point. I also have not had a crisis of that nature. I just assume people respect me for my dazzling intellect and incisive wit, and the crazy hotness is just gravy.

      • kimmeister

Wouldn’t you know it, I haven’t had that crisis either! They flock to me for the style and stay for the puns.

    • http://CallMeJane.com/ CallMeJane

How nice to see Norma Kamali.

    • fiddlecub

I don’t know–it’s the same face in every picture, and the face doesn’t so much read “sultry” to me as it does “vacant.”

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Her eyemakeup looks really amateur but the bunny is cute.

    • YoungSally

      Ann Margret

    • shirab

When will she be cast as Tina Fey’s younger sister in something? Soon, please! Loved her in Up in the Air.

    • kimmeister

We just saw Charlize in that lace-up Dior. I wonder if that’s going to be this season’s IT dress for the magazines?

    • sojo

      G O R G E O U S !!!

    • AlexisPayne

      Serving up Ann Margret realness

    • GillianHolroyd

Okay, in the purple dress, she’s trying to climb over a table full of flowers, why?

      • Meri

The pictures are telling a story, in reverse order. She arrives at a pool party in the Dior. She changes into a bikini and lounges by the pool with a bunny on a fur. Then she changes into a purple dress, while the bunny, angered at the slaughter of its kin, attacks. She is forced to climb on a table and pelts it with flowers; fortunately, the rabbit has terrible pollen allergies and is killed by the floral assault. She then changes into the D&G dress and receives her accolades for her valiant actions.

        • demidaemon

I’m always impressed when BKs try to make a through line for these editorials, because you know the editors never thought that much about it.

    • Cheryl

I’m loving the Norma Kamali bathing suit. Yeah, the 60’s sex kitten might be an over done cliche, but I think they’re doing it so well here that I’m definitely on board with it.

    • conniemd

I was thinking Ann Margret when I saw these pics.
Edit – I see a bunch of other people flashed on Ann Margret.

    • ashtangajunkie

The eye makeup looks a bit DIY to me, but she’s looking pretty fab here. And I am loving that bikini.

    • Belvane

The third photo looks like the prop person didn’t show up and they scrambled to find something interesting at the location: “Ummmm, we’ve got some watermelon here… and this fur throw… oh, and a rabbit!”

    • FibonacciSequins

I do think every starlet is required to do at least one Bardot/Ann Margret shoot. I don’t think her looks are particularly suited to that kind of style icon. She’s more delicate pretty girl than bombshell.

      • t bell

You beat me to it with the Ann Margret reference.

      • ktr33

Right. I said likewise. She’s not pulling it off. She’s trying for sexy stare-pout, but it just looks blank.

    • minnye

She could be on the short list for a Bobbie Gentry biopic.

    • Mothra

OMG that black dress in the third shot. I might need it. She looks great, Terrific styling all around! I got to think that it cannot be comfortable perched on all those branches of flowers.

    • KT

It’s sort of weird for her to talk about how she doesn’t consider herself to be that hot, and then to portray her looking really hot. Regardless, congrats to her for working this look and not looking twee as fuck. The hair looks great, though I think the eyeliner is a little too heavy.

    • Hermione

She looks pretty here, but to me her quotes, about not trading on her looks, are funny, because I don’t consider her to be very good looking (or interesting for that matter), sans designer fashion and professional styling.(But then again, that goes for lots of celebrities, I guess.) Also, I don’t know why she’s famous. I saw her on one thing, a movie about a college singing competition, and I just don’t get it. It must be a generational thing and I’m too old to appreciate her.

      • James

She is famous because she’s quite talented. She was nominated for Academy Award for best supporting actress a few years back, as well as BAFTA, GG and SAG nominations among others, for Up in the Air but she’s also done theatre. In fact, she is the third youngest ever Tony nominee, she also won Theatre World Award for that (High Society). Just because you’ve seen her in one film, and didn’t think that was anything special, doesn’t mean she hasn’t done anything else. Considering various other “celebrities” Anna for one has both talent and work to back it up.

        • Hermione

You obviously took offense. Sorry about that. I just don’t know her, which I stated, and I didn’t care for the movie I did see her in. It’s clear you think a lot of her. To each his/her own . . .

    • LadyVimes

But why is the rabbit by the pool?

    • nomnom

I never thought of herself as HOT. Yes, she is good looking, but her personality takes presedence over her good looks.

    • Gatto Nero

The Nina Ricci and Dior dresses are pretty great, but I’m not buying her as a Sixties sex kitten. She doesn’t have the raw material. But this may have more to do with how I perceive her than with her actual attributes.

      • Sabin

I don’t see it working on a size 00. Brigitte Bardot was shaped better for this look.

But I do like the clothes.

    • formerlyAnon

She looks ok. She’d look a lot better if I didn’t look at these and think “Ann Margret attempt and Ann Margret FAIL.”

      (typo edit)

      • ktr33

exactly. “I knew Ann-Margret, and you are no Ann-Margret.”

    • SuzyQuzey

My girlcrush on her just reached new heights.

    • aelizabethpm

All I can see is Katharine Ross in butch cassidy and the sundance kid. She’s really lovely!

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Another pointless photo shoot… layout extravaganza and zero content! Kills me…about the only decent dress Raf at DIOR has put out and they make it look sooo boring!

    • quiltrx

Terrific clothing choices, and she’s beautiful…but if we criticize the boystars for having ‘only one face’ in guyditorials, we have to criticize her for it too. Or at least I do.

    • icm

      She looks awesome!!!!!

    • Yoshio

Is that navy dress the same one Charlize wore recently? If so, AK looks waaaaaay better in it.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Bunny? She’s posed with a bunny?

    • smh4748

Like Anna Kendrick, I, too, often lay glamorously poolside on opulent furs while cuddling a bunny.

I wish she’d comment on that one on Twitter. She’s hilarious, and I feel sure that she’s got some thoughts about that photo! The purple one confused me–as I looked closer, I realize that both of her legs are on the table, she’s just sitting sort of weird. But with a casual glance, it just looks like she’s climbing really ungracefully and awkwardly onto the table. I might like it better that way.

That last photo though–that’s dynamite. If I were her, I’d order a print of that in a giant size and frame it and hang it in the living room.

    • Jacob Bowen

That Dior reminds me of a baseball…but I LOVE IT!

    • Imasewsure

      Ann Margaret fabulous

    • Alloy Jane

I rather love this. She’s kinda giving zombie face, but part of me feels like this is not an accident. I think she’s having her own little Zoolander moment in her head. The clothes look nice, love that purple dress.

    • AndieJay

Daaang. That Dior would also look amazing on JLaw.

    • somebody blonde

I only have eyes for that bunny! So cute!

    • ktr33

Meh. It’s so fake-sexy whereas Ann-Margret was 100% real sexy. She’s not pulling it off.

    • Vee

I totally am seeing Barbarella here.

    • TerryMH

I hope she sent the folks at Elle a big thank you gift.

    • Megan Au

I saw the picture of her on the table much smaller on my iphone last night and thought that was the craziest pose of her midway trying to crawl across the table with her leg hitched up like that. Upon closer inspection, I see she’s just sitting there and the flowers created a very weird optical illusion. She’s such a nut that I wouldn’t put it past her to do a wacky “get me crawling up on here” pose though….

    • Vsanborn

Starlet? With an oscar nomination in the bag and regular work in films? I think not.

    • fursa_saida

I feel like that quote goes eerily well with these photos; as in, she looks good, but she’s so unused to the concept of “I’m here to show off my looks” that she doesn’t quite know what to do with herself. It all feels a little awkward, even though there’s not an actually bad picture anywhere here.

    • traceyishere

“I’ve got lavender up my bum!”

    • DeTrop

Had to look her up at IMBD as I’ve never seen anything she’s been in. (Old you know). She looks beautiful in these pics.

    • Uncle Spike

Is she a Bond girl? Loving this entire series. Well done, Anna!

    • CNM

I love her hair, but something about the eyeliner bugs. Like, she needs faux eyelashes maybe or a darkened waterline?

    • rh33

      It’s Ann Marg-Rock!

    • ThaliaMenninger

I just don’t find her attractive. Reading that it never occurred to her to trade on her looks, I’m mystified. She was gonna trade on those looks? Srsly? Oh well. I plead eye of the beholder.

    • W. Frame

She looks like Nancy Sinatra in the Dior. Sexy but awkward.
