2014 Critics’ Choice TV Awards Red Carpet Rundown – Part 2

Posted on June 20, 2014

It’s late on Friday and if we don’t get this done RIGHT NOW, we’re likely to turn into totally cranky bitches!

Oh, wait! That already happened!

Emmy Rossum in Monique Lhuillier
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)

Love it.  That’s a gorgeous color on her. Killer earrings.

Colton Haynes

Laura Prepon in Alice + Olivia
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (3)

The bottom of the skirt works in a gothy lingerie kind of way, but that bodice is just plain ugly. And it’s way too close to her skin tone.

Sufe Bradshaw
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (4)

Simple but elegant. And she looks pleased with herself, which is always the best accessory.

Carrie Preston in Black Halo
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (5)

 Way too “First Lady.”

Maggie Siff in Martin Grant
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (6)

It’s a cute dress, but we’re not sure about that neckline for her. And the waist looks a little high.

Minnie Driver in Lorena Sarbu
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (7)

Pretty. Gets the job done.

Melissa McBride
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (8)

We like the dress and we like the idea of a contrasting jacket paired with it, but we really don’t like that jacket. She can get away with something a little more youthful than that.

Michelle Monaghan in Antonio Berardi
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (9)

No. Absolutely not. We feel a massive headache of disapproval coming on.

Josh Dallas in Isaia
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (10)

Kaley Cuoco in Amen
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (12)

Celebrating 35 years in show biz, ladies and gentlemen.

Angie Harmon in Azzaro
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (13)

It looks fantastic on her but it’s pretty dull from a style front.

Matthew McConaughey in Ermenegildo Zegna
2014-Critics-Choice-TV-Awards-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Part-2-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (14)

He’s clearly given up on the poledance and is just doing victory laps at this point.

DAMN is Angie Harmon’s body bangin’

  • marlie

Emmy Rossum wins this round (for real, I LOVE everything about her outfit), and Sufe Bradshaw gets an honorable mention just for that smile alone. Colton Haynes looks good, and I appreciate that he always puts in the effort, but it all seems a little try-hard to me. And Angie Harmon’s dress may be borderline boring, but man does she look fab in it.

    • Kent Roby

Emmy Rossum irrationally bugs me, but I concede that she looks great. Gosh, first Piven, now Rossum; if I like Gwennie next I might need to sign off.

      • EveEve

Emmy Rossum’s acting in Shameless is astoundingly good. And she’s come a long way on the styling front now that’s she is getting some much-deserved red carpet attention. But she seems like the kind of gal who is always going to be a little awkward playing dress ups.

      • ShaoLinKitten

She irrationally bugs me too. To me, she always looks like she’s smirking. I stopped watching Shameless because I could not get past it. She is beautiful and she looks great here, except that her boobs look oddly pointy.

      • marlie

I’m kind of indifferent to Emmy Rossum, but if you suddenly start praising Gwynnie, we might need to seek professional help for you.

        • Kent Roby

Yes, that would be an on- the-ledge level cry for help!

      • scoobynacks

Oh it’s not that irrational really. Still haven’t forgiven the whole of the film Phantom of the Opera. I might otherwise like her, I don’t know, but the rearranged end of “Think of Me” still has me reaching for the smelling salts just thinking about it. They should’ve cast someone to hit those notes or at least done the old trick of getting someone else to dub in the high part trying to sound like Emmy had done it. They did that slight adjustment for Marilyn Monroe in “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” (Marni Nixon again) they can do it here. Supposedly Anne Hathaway was the intended star originally, but let’s not act like Sierra Boggess couldn’t have blown them both outta the water if only she’d been a box office name instead of a stage goddess (well even back then she wasn’t as known but bah humbug, don’t ruin my declaration with facts).

Sorry, that’s a longwinded way of saying ‘not irrational at all, I totally feel you.’

      • Clash D

She always looks the saaaame. No matter what dress you put her in.

    • DuBey2

One of the best looks I’ve seen on Emmy R

  • kimmeister

Emmy looks great except for the lip color.
What is that white thing I’m seeing on Colton? The label of his jacket? Surely it can’t be part of his tie’s design.
I don’t know which of Michelle’s sins is worse: clashing whites, random red-orange lips, the jumpsuit that looks like a knit top over a high waisted pant . . .
Kaley certainly looks better than her last showing here. Granted, that’s not hard to do.

ETA: Thanks for a prolific Friday, TLo!

  • AlexisPayne

Kaley Cuoco you are 28 and on a very successful sitcom, look the part! Let your handlers dress like this.

    • Snarkmeister

Is she wearing…a drop-crotch romper?? My eyes are burning right now.

      • marlie

O.M.F.G. I don’t even know what else to say to that…

      • Rebecca Bledsoe

Why the hell would a designer do that?!? WHY would anyone wear one?!?!!!

      • Lucía Gavello

I am desperately trying to find pictures that disprove this.

ETA: They are hammer shorts, hold me kittens.

        • majorbedhead

Oh dear god in heaven, I was praying it was just a skirt that had hitched up funny. Hammer shorts??? Excuse me, I need to go find the fainting couch now.

        • Snarkmeister

Not even her handlers should be relegated to the hell of wearing these. Whoever designed those things should be cut with a thousand razor blades and bathed in lemon juice. The fact that Kaley wore them – apparently of her own free will – makes me seriously question her sanity.

        • scoobynacks

Why why why did I read this? I already hated it, but now I’m horrified. Ignorance was truly bliss, or at the very least not what I’m experiencing now. I can’t unsee the hammer shorts. Begone from my mind, foul demon!

    • CelandineM

Why is she orange? Why did someone think that hair and makeup looked good? Who the hell picked out that outfit? Does she want to look like she’s 50?

    • Kristin McNamara

Given her last couple public appearances, I wonder if she might be pregnant? Usually she’s a very form-fitting-clothes-wearing young lady, showing off her great body, and these last few have been very………. not.

  • hughman

Centuries ago I was shopping the Kiehl’s counter at Barneys Beverly Hills with my dog and Angie Harmon came over and was cooing over how cute my dog was (natch) and then asked what I was buying (shaving cream) and she was very charming. We chatted for a few and then I finished my purchase and as I was departing, I admiringly said “Oh, by the way, congrats on your show ‘Crossing Jordan’!”

Doh! Anddd… scene. She was gracious enough to tell me people say that to her all the time. I was gracious enough to pretend I believed her.

    • MilaXX

Did you pray for the floor to open up and allow you to disappear?

    • alyce1213

Oh my, horror. Makes for a real good story, though.

    • Thomas

You always have the best stories. I remember you mentioned how you met Lucy Liu at store or somewhere once. Sounds like you could write a book about your celebrity encounters. Which other celebrities have you met?

    • Julie Parr

Have you told this story in the TLo comments once before? Is it weird that I would remember that?

  • Frank_821

Love Colton’s shoes. they look pretty natty

  • Call me Bee

Awful pictures! All these people look sick or hung-over or something. Bad lighting. Anyway–Between this group and the last one–Emmy Rossum FTW.

  • Kirstin McAulay

Mr Haynes sorting out that MESS from before…. nice!

  • teddy partridge

MM forgot to stop at the tailor to cuff his pants.

  • LadyVimes

Does Colton have an excellent stylist, or is he just really good at dressing himself? Because boy is sharp.

    • MilaXX

I think a bit of both.

      • Thomas

If he’s not gay, he’s definitely metrosexual. The boy has good taste and style.

    • Nicholas

He’s models, and he also attends fashion shows, so he definitely knows what he’s doing.

  • MilaXX

I was really hoping for something a bit more hippy chic for Melissa. A lot of these ladies played it safe. Michelle Monaghan needs to go home and start over.

  • gayle

Kaley Cuoco is a disaster, Angie Harmon is simply stunning and Maggie Siff just had a baby so she gets a pass from me. I am really just pleased Maggie’s hair is growing out because I was not a fan her haircut this past season of Sons of Anarchy.

  • Pennymac

And to add to the weird aging vibe that Kaley has been giving off, she is wearing a dropped crotch romper bottom that looks like its made to contain her depends. WTF?

  • Bonnie Blue

These rundowns confirm for me that I watch all the wrong shows/movies since I only recognize about 40% of the people! Anyway I like Emmy Rossum’s color combo and think she looks great. I liked Michelle Monoghan’s until I scrolled past her waist and saw it was pants and not a long dress, I think it would have been pretty as a dress. The pose on Josh Dallas…I couldn’t help laughing. The jacket is ill-fitting and he looks like he’s flexing or something.

  • Trickytrisha

Melissa McBride is so freaking pretty – love that face. Not so nuts about the jacket, but she’s one classy lady.

Laura Prepon’s upper torso looks like it belongs on a 60 year old matron who’s been noshing a bit too much on canapes for the last 30 years. Much as I adore her in OITNB, she needs some styling help.

Kaley C. obviously dressed for a sad clown party and ended up at the wrong venue.

    Emmy R. wins.

  • FibonacciSequins

Guys, I think Kaley’s skirt is sewn together at the bottom. It’s like a Wall Street version of Yul Brynner’s King of Siam trousers. What even??

I loved Emmy Rossum’s whole look. Sufe Bradshaw’s too – I don’t know her but she looks like fun.

I wonder if Laura Prepon and Mayim Bialik shared a stylist for this poledance.

    • TAGinMO

Sufe Bradshaw is Sue, Selina’s secretary/scheduler on ‘Veep’. Small part, but she’s perfect in it.

      • TAGinMO

P.S. – You really must watch ‘Veep’. Funniest show on TV right now.

  • Steve Ek

All I could think when I saw Kaley Cuoco is if it was really appropriate to choose a metallic handbag when attending a funeral. And are those skorts with room for a pair of Depends or a poorly fitted skirt?

  • Helena A.

Emmy Rossum, Minnie Driver, Sufe Bradshaw and Angie Harmon look stunning! Mellisa McBride and Laura Prepon are worst dressed with really ugly, ill fitting dresses and bad hair.

  • Melmmmendes

I actually luuurve Michelle Monaghan’s look. Like, a lot. The shoes are a terrible idea, I think a contrasting pop of color or strappy shoes would look better, but the rest of is pretty perf, IMO.

Laura P’s dress, on the other hand, is giving me dry heaves.

    • Judy_S

I liked Michelle Monaghan’s look too (but really had to scroll to find someone else who did).

      • mayanempire

We’re not alone! And agree–the shoes were the only thing I didn’t like.

    • scoobynacks

Seriously? Even with the way the tailoring on the pants makes it look like her left leg is bending in some sort of spacetime warp situation? Don’t even get me started on what looks like a peplum abortion on her mid section. A simple, well tailored blue pant and that top, maybe. What she’s got on now, just no.

  • Jay

I didn’t really notice during her 70s Show days, but Laura Prepon is foxy. I agree that the dress doesn’t do much for her, but I love her makeup and jewelry. Beautiful body, too.

  • smh4748

Kaley, I know the starlet market is a tight one and a girl has to look out for her career, but angling to become the AARP’s spokesmodel is just not appropriate at 28 years old. There are other ways to pay the bills.

  • Imasewsure

It’s nice to see Joey Heatherton on the RC again… Oh …Kaley who? Hmmmm …

  • Dany

    Carrie Preston’s hair is tragic

  • KinoEye

I may have to rethink my irrational hate of Kayley C if she keeps making me laugh this hard every time she gets in front of a camera. Except for when she’s on her show, of course.

    • Kitten Mittons

But if she makes me like her, then I’ll just end up hating her for making me like her. It’s a vicious cycle.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Angie Harmon has been a big girl crush of mine since her L&O days, and she hasn’t aged a day since then, it seems. She also has that smoky voice… mmm.

Laura Prepon’s dress would have looked great if the top was black, strapless, with a more pronounced waist, and sans bow. So basically a different dress entirely from the waist up. But she is hot as hell.

McConaughey is Pitting bigtime. He’s going to be in a brutally tough Emmy category and shouldn’t assume he’s a shoe in. The Emmy voters were extremely perverse last year, and some assumed sure things were beaten by surprise dark horses. I think he should win (even against Cranston, Hamm, Harrelson, Mikkelson, Rhys, Spacey, whoever).

  • quiltrx

I so love Emmy, and she really killed it this time (as she often does!). I feel like Laura P’s dress is an almost–cut out some of the bodice weirdness, and there needed to be at least a bit of the black on top. And if the color were more taupe, say…
Melissa is a GREAT actress and I wish she’d had a little more fun with her outfit!
And someone, for the love of Oprah, please tell me WHY Kaley insists on being the anti-Penny on the RC? Not that she should wear that style…but those happy colors always suit her. She looks so depressing on the RC. And I hear those are Hammer shorts, which makes me want to die.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

Isn’t it refreshing though, that when someone is called “First Lady” now, it brings visions of our FLOTUS and not Laura Bush? Or Barbara Bush? Or Hilary Clinton? If you look at it this way, it makes it a much different viewpoint.

  • Fuchsiaforever

First time EVER that I approve of Emmy Rossum’s ensemble! Brava girl!

  • Little_Olive

I feel these people are dressed in very different degrees of smartness, ranging from business casual to hollywood party to black tie. How does that happen?

    Also: Kaley Cuoco, get help.

  • DeTrop

Lessons should be given to all ladies before posing on the red carpet on how to position their feet. Pigeon toes are distracting. Yes Kaley Cuoco. I like her hairdo. Nice change.

  • ktr33

OMG, I didn’t recognized Kaley Cuoco! She looks like Kate from Ben and Kate Plus 8 with that haircut! Holy Momcut, Batman, she’s 28! And that skirt… I can’t quite see … but is it a wrap, or is it, like, SHORTS, or something?
I love Emmy’s color combo – dress and killer earrings. She’s the winner.
The men are yawns at best.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Ben and Kate Plus 8? Did she get remarried? That poor man.

      • scoobynacks

Kate of “Ben and Kate” is Dakota Johnson aka the girl from Fifty Shades of Grey.

        • oat327

“Ben and Kate” and “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” are two different shows. But she does.

  • Orange Girl

i am frightened to think that Kaley Cuoco might be having work done to her face? at 28? Or just new make-up?

  • TheLaurenJean

Totally thought Melissa McBride was Maggie Gyllenhaall. That’s not a point in either of their favors.

  • Joanna

I don’t know 90% of the stars in these last two posts. And almost none of them look very good to me.

  • oat327

First time seeing Maggie Siff not as Rachel Menken. Why does everyone on that show look so much worse in modern times?
