  • Do.not.want.

The dress is wearing her. 🙁

    • 3boysful

Not a Dress for Real Life. Even if your real life is the CFF.

    • Anna

Beautiful and elegant woman – and you barely notice her. This dress is so much awful.

      • Kent Roby

The ice-skater-from-hell sleeves and that ridiculous hip ruffle are the worst; this is definitely a “No Canne Do” look. Without the sleeves and the ruffle, I would love this look on her.

        • Constant Reader

Your “No Cannes Do” comment made me choke on my breakfast sandwich. But I’m okay! Thanks for the laugh.

        • Me Again

I think I would love this look without the ruffle. The sleeves I could take or leave. Probably leave, but they don’t kill the look for me, the way the ruffle does.

    • Carly Clement

the dress looks like her vagina is floating awa6y!!!

  • Sarah

There is no earthly reason to put a Cantilevered Pelvis Frill on anyone, and certainly not this dress.

    • Glam Dixie

Don’t be silly, everyone will be wearing them by fall! Cantilevered Pelvis Frills for everyone!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

        Over granny panties, no doubt.

      • smayper

        Yet another great band name…

    • demidaemon

Well, maybe for drag queens. But, really, that is who this dress was meant for.

    • melisaurus

Well on a woman who is more than human like this woman, it is ok.

  • Mrs. Julien

If ever there was a time for that dress, it’s Cannes. I’m still not sure it’s that time. That is a whole lot o’look.

    • kirkyo

Works for me from the front but the extra fabric looks weird on the side view.

    • makeityourself

I’m thinking the black-and-white makes her indistinguishable from the horde of tuxedo-ed photographers in the background. Note-to-self: wear color at Canne next year.

  • leahpapa

The machine overlords will be so displeased with me, but I do not care for these futuristic. bionic looks. Bust by Google Torso, sleeves by Borg.

    • random_poster

      Google Torso…hahahahhahaha!!!!

  • boweryboy

Weelll… it’s certianly eye catching. I would like it more minus the sleeves.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Without the sleeves and that ruffle, I’d like this one. for me, the ruffle detracts more than the sleeves.

  • Jennifer L.

Hate the dress, but SHE DOES NOT AGE!

    • In_Stitches

Oh she ages. She’s just doing it backwards, Benjamin Button style.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I like everything but the ruffle. Take that away and you have a hell of a look.

  • Kitten Mittons

She looks much better in this than any human has a right to. I don’t love it, but she’s working that dress to its limit.

    • melisaurus

It fits her so perfectly. If her boobs were a different size or shape or her waist those panels would be all askew.

      • Kitten Mittons

        Yes, it is fitted perfectly.

  • Alyssa

This would be much improved without the frippery on the skirt and without the sleeves. I think the bodice is neat, but I can see her black cups through it.

  • MoHub

The top reads superhero costume, but at least I can interpret it, which is more than I can do for the crazy skirt.

    • Ginmaru

The skirt is super hero bathrobe while you have a cold……tissues included.

      • MoHub

Thank you1 I knew someone would be able to figure it out.

  • numenah

That face! That body! This woman is elegance personified. That dress is not.

  • Sissy

she’s gorge and i love the dress, hate the combination of fabrics (theme of the day?)

  • jspark

So Zhang, Zoe and Nicole… the arguable princess graces of their race are all present, this red carpet is just missing Miss Lupita and Freida Pinto to name a few. WHo else am I missing?

    • kimmeister

      Penelope Cruz?

  • Anna

I love the graphic quality of the top half, very Mary Quant. However, it also looks like it would be terribly hot and uncomfortable. As for the bottom half, it looks like she got a giant piece of toilet paper stuck to her skirt.

Still though, Zyang Ziyi: just breathtaking.

    • gabbilevy

I’m with you. Keep the general look of the top half, ditch the TP flounce.

    • ballerinawithagun

I was feeling sticky just looking at it! Lots of toilet paper!

  • Intergalactic Princess Realness

    • smayper

Now I’m imagining her as a new Star Wars princess. In crazy cool costumes.

  • Glam Dixie

The top and bottom seem to belong to two different dresses. Not loving either half.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

I don’t know whether I love this or I don’t?? I mean, AMAZING skirt, hair and face, jewelry, and purse, but god that dominatrix tangram top with the shitty illusion netting. Yet I don’t know whether the top fully distracts from the perfection of everything else, so ????

    • MartyBellerMask

      Dominatrix tangram!

  • clatie

I think I would like it more if it were sleeveless? And the stiffness through the bust is not good but unavoidable, I guess? Interesting. Ultimately a failure.

  • marlie

This is really cool. I don’t like the ruffle down the skirt, but I love the mix of hard and soft. It’s a really interesting dress.

    • Cathy S

I agree. I’m not crazy about the sleeves with the illusion netting or the ruffle, but it’s an interesting hard/soft mix.

      • marlie

I also love anything that reminds me of stained glass or mosaics, so the top of the dress is really speaking to me.

  • @Biting Panda

I prefer this kind of Star Wars Couture to the printed T’s and skirts.

    • Tlazolteotl

The bodice looks like the wings of a Tie fighter.

    • mjude

god bless your nerd-ness. I love me some star wars.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

You know it’s a bad design when Zhang Ziyi’s face can’t save it.

  • histrogeek

So we now have the most dangerous woman in the universe (Zoe S.) and the immortal sword goddess at the same premiere. Someone get the rights to this.

  • hughman

How great if this had been Ben Affleck’s new Batman costume.

    • CPK1

That would almost make up for Ben Affleck as Batman!

    • demidaemon

BWAHAHAHA! I would love if this were truth.

  • Emily Smith

Well…we could start over with just the adorable clutch and build upwards from there?

    • kimmeister

The thing is, it’s not a clutch, it has a handle! I squee’d with delight at seeing it.

      • Emily Smith

I know I love the little handle!

  • LeelaST

    Bride/Transformer. Why?

  • Carla_Charlton

If it didn’t have the frill-thing on the skirt, I would say this was awesome.

  • Like the materials, contrasts etc…NOT loving the design on bodice….

  • AnguaVonUberwald

I kind of love this, top to bottom. As others have said, the mix of hard and soft is really neat, and I am a sucker for ruffles. It ain’t boring, that’s for sure.

  • PeggyOC

Armored shower poufs. For those really dangerous showers.

  • malarson2

This is terrible but do you think she’s threatened by the younger (and often compared to) Ms. Fan Bingbing? Because I can see Zhang thinking – subconsciously or otherwise – that she’s going to show Fan a thing or two when she first saw this dress.

  • malarson2

This is terrible but do you think she’s threatened by the younger (and often compared to) Ms. Fan Bingbing? Because I can see Zhang thinking – subconsciously or otherwise – that she’s going to show Fan a thing or two when she first saw this dress.

  • WaterGhost

She looks amazing. Screw Janelle What’s-Her-Face and her puerile riding instructor outfit. THIS is how you bring the house down.

  • frannyprof

  • AlisonS

I can’t figure out if I like this, just not in broad daylight in such lighting OR if I just straight up don’t like this but really, really might want to like it.

  • FibonacciSequins

    Crazy beautiful.

  • ellatheingenue

that weird florpy bit is completely unnecessary

  • SugarSnap108

It’s “Whose Pelvis Looks the Most Cray-Cray?” Day. I’m torn between Gaga’s granny pooch and Kidman’s crotch mushroom.

  • ktr33

Lose the sleeves and I kinda love it. With the sleeves, the bodice reads “goth” and “edgy” ice skating dress. She also needs to give fiercer face.

  • Kathy_Marlow

Take off the ruffle..it’s scrolldown fug

  • Imasewsure

It’s dramatic… I’ll give her that (along with a new dress I guess)

  • This dress is bipolar.

  • Danielle

The wrinkling of the illusion netting is making me TWITCH but she’s got a stunning face.

  • MilaXX

I like it. I think it’s unusual and eye catching. The illusion netting doesn’t bother.

  • B_C_J

Tame the ruffle & shorten the length of the train & this is a winner. She is more beautiful than fan bingbing who at times looks artificial & brittle.

  • Garcia Loca

    OMG love it!

  • kimmeister

Zhang Ziyi, how I’ve missed you. You look completely amazing.

  • Alyssa_T_Robot

the force of my love for this dress is enough to counteract everyone’s hate for it! sure i can do without the big old ruffle on the side but this is dress is givin muh liiiiife!

  • Nancer

I LOVE the top, but don’t understand the ruffle down the side/front of the skirt. Pull that off, trim some of that ridiculous train, and this is really great.

  • nannypoo

She’s beautiful. I love the dress, and I think the odd ruffle is a nice contrast with the angles in the top. I feel sad for those photographers. They’re like a little gang of penguins on an ice floe, only with cameras.

  • julnyes

I think I would love this if the bottom of the dress was a black sheath.

  • steve

Its a great take on the recent Star Wars theme in women’s couture. She took a difficult dress and really made work for the occasion. And, its not a cantilevered pelvis thrill; it’s a cantilevered thigh frill!

  • lamamu

I’m in the minority here, but I love this on her. She is the perfect gal for this look. Like the dress, she’s a mix of hard and soft. (Anyone who has seen Crouching Tiger knows what I’m talking about…)

    • Winter_White

      Yes. Love this comment.

  • cowper

She’s starring in the Chinese version of Spiderman?

  • Sonia Perez

It’s interesting. I probably sound like my mother there.

  • tereliz

Looks a little too one way monkey to me. Et tu, Stephane Rolland?

  • suzq

It’s stunning. TLo already explained the pole dance for a lackluster movie and how everyone drags out the haute couture. As such, this is pretty good, except for the ruffle in the front, but that’s not Zhang’s fault. Anyway, you got an awkward ruffle in the front, fan that train out, darlin’!

  • israel8491

The top is fierce as shit. The bottom has nothing to do with it, and the ruffle thing is too much. I’d love to see the bottom half of the black dress.

  • Gatto Nero

This looks like a Dmitry creation (Project Runway, a few seasons back?).
It would have been better, maybe, without the illusion sleeves with pieces stuck on — and with a sleeker skirt. The big ruffle is a disconnect for me.

    • amanda lynn

I was thinking the same thing – it’s totally a Dmitry dress.

  • Tracy_Flick

You take that off right this second and send it to Johnny Weir.

    • steve

Its not trashy enough for Johnny!

  • ScarlettHarlot

    1. I adore her. 2. I feel like this is reminiscent of something Viktor made on Project Runway.

  • dschubba

I liked this more before I noticed the sleeves.

  • demidaemon

This is kind of cool, but it seems awfully draggy for Cannes. Thoughts?

  • PastryGoddess

She is so much better than this. Take this off and send it via a slow boat…somewhere

  • somebody blonde

I love the Chinese stars’ tendencies to go for the diva drag on the red carpet. She looks fabulous.

  • e jerry powell

You will bleed out from all the fierceness!

  • Mrs. O

  • Pterodactyl111

I would LOVE this … if it weren’t for that weird fluff thing hanging off the front.

  • YoungSally

It’s like the ruffle fungus from Zoe’s dress escaped and latched onto this dress.

  • Annistella

Now this is CANNE. Ah-em? Ms Lively? could you please step aside. You are blocking the photographers.

  • Jaeda Laurez

i really wish this didn’t have sleeves, because it is EVERYTHING otherwise.

  • Monabel

The more illusion, the worse the look.

  • livesarah

Half barbie, half robot. But only half-sure I dislike it… It’s a frankendress for sure but she is thiiiiis close to making it work.

  • quiltrx

This lady in this dress is giving me LIFE after a long day! I could do without the “we still have this big piece of the white fabric” hip-to-knee foofaraw, but the rest is completely fierce. The earrings and the bag are great, too.
If you do Cannes, you need to DO that shit and BRING IT…like Miss Lady here!

  • Judih1

I like the top, the skirt and the purse – but NOT all three together.

  • Jecca2244

I love that the photographers are dressed in black tie.

  • Joey Melliza

i can’t with that jellyfish hanging from her hip.

  • dmkava

If she isn’t one of the most beautiful women in the world, I don’t know who is.

  • MartyBellerMask

I think I actually love this.

  • sunflower

I like the idea of it… but the top reminds me of electrical tape

  • gloriana232

I just want to say that the wall of tuxedo-ed photographers always makes me smile. MY KINGDOM FOR A MULTI-POCKET CARGO VEST

  • kmk05

That dress is a For Nobody Dress who is having a nervous breakdown. Why else would it be pleathery on top and frilly on the bottom?

  • velomango

I think there are about 4 people in the world who can wear this dress, and she is one of them. She’s not world-famous. She knows she needs to make a statement, and she’s doing it. She may not appear to be 100% confident, but she’s pulling it off. And with a dress like that, “pulling it off” is a win.

  • Lucas

I think I like it, but I’m not sure if I only like it because she wears it VERY well. She is making it look good, although I think I really don’t like the top half of that dress. Whenever I see triangle cutouts pieced together like that I just think of a few Project Runway disasters.

  • Mary Lauer

Crotch foam is not a good look on anyone. 8-(

  • JP

Top half: skating costume. Bottom half: toilet paper.

  • kategs

I think this is spectacular. The juxtaposition of angular top and soft skirt…the only blackboard scratch is that ridiculous purse/bag.

  • kim bunchalastnames

… am i the only one who thinks that she makes this look good?

  • Aurumgirl

    That must feel horrible on.

  • camillegal

another victim of illusion netting gone wrong.

  • LJCdoc

I kind of like it, except for the side view, in which there is a distinct vagina poof.

  • RutGot

She’s like Rihanna, girl can throw on anything and make it sing. I think this is crazy dramatic.

  • BlairBear

    Animorph couture

  • allcapsERINN

I guess I’ll be the only one to say, “OH HELL YEAH!” I think it’s fabulous, but then again I just saw “Godzilla” and I’m in a sci-fi kinda mood.

  • Liza Ortiz

No to mixing ruffles with dominatrix tops!
