Posted on May 19, 2014

This is, quite simply, perfection:

And not a further word is needed. You WERQ that movie star/royalty shit, girl. Snaps of AWE.

    • Christine Hart

Gorgeous. How did she get to that location in that dress?

    • ninamadeleine

Perfection. I want to wear a dress like that just once in my life. JUST ONCE.

      • Beardslee

And you can tell she is really enjoying her turn.

      • Kent Roby

Reason # 2,703 why I love New Orleans: Many woman (and many men!) have worn a gown at least this big and dramatic while reigning over a Mardi Gras bal masque!

      • Carly Clement

Yes! I am the same, this dress and the floral one from that collection! I can’t believe it took this long for someone to wear this dress! This dress would have been amazing at the Met Gala! I just hope to see the floral one pop up on a red carpet soon… if not in my wardrobe first.

      • Rajdeep Shakya

        I can make for You……)

    • Glam Dixie

I don’t know who this woman is, but holy shitsticks, that is a big dress. You work that ginormous skirt, girl. I would possibly have given her a bracelet of diamonds and called it a day. Lovely.

      • P M

She’s a Bollywood actress, daughter of a Bollywood actor – he was in Slumdog Millionaire as the quiz show host – and a cousin to the Indian version of the Coppolas – the Kapoors.

        • Tanya Wade

And he is gorgeous, so the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Stunning indeed.

      • Sarah

Yes, bracelet. But really, only because I like to see people with access to fancy jewels wear them. She looks amazing.

    • Janet B

    • GillianHolroyd

Shades of Exorcist… HER HEAD IS ON BACKWARDS!!!!

      • alyce1213

Her arms really make that pose awkward,

        • kimmeister

That haute couture / avant-garde pose is super awkward in real life.

          • mellorcr

Agree with all of the above: head is backwards, awkward arms, haute couture posing is for magazine covers, not the red carpet! So glad I am not the only one who noticed!

      • smayper

I had the SAME thought! Wicked weird, as they say here in Massachusetts. They should do a scene like that on Orphan Black….not really, but wouldn’t it be fun?

        • majorbedhead

Oooh, I had the same thought! Wicked awkward. (Hello, fellow Masshole!)

      • FridaStaire

And she still looks chic! That’s talent!

      • Lenora Dody

Yes!! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought her head was on backwards!! She does look gorgeous but I do wonder about all those human things like sitting.

    • msdamselfly

I agree. She’s able to handle all of that black and still look bright.

    • TM

So… how does one sit through a movie in that?

    • hughman

The dress is a Movie Star toilet paper cover in Cher’s house.

      • Fuchsiaforever

        HAHAHAH totally

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

        I am dying!

    • Jean Beaton Leavitt

      Like Versailles before the revolution.

    • Yoshio

A hoop skirt revival? Scarlett would be so proud.

    • snarkykitten

I dunno…it makes her head look like it’s on backwards and the floofyness is uneven.

      • Vegas Girl

I had to look at the one pic for a LONG time before I was convinced her head wasn’t backwards. It actually looked painful.

    • alyce1213

I absolutely love her hair, makeup, the dress — which does NOT show side-boob (thank you). I wish her arms were not akimbo, especially where she pushes them forward, it’s odd.

    • Noah

Where was THIS at the Met Gala?

    • crash1212

WERQ indeed. Also, Elie Saab is a magician in that he can do a really large arm opening WITHOUT exposing side-boob. Would that the magic could be passed along to fellow designers.

      • Constant Reader

Yes! My first thought was “See? A bodice can be bare and still not too revealing. It can be done!”

      • kimmeister

I think part of that is due to the wearer’s particular boobs though.

        • Alloy Jane

As a flat-chested girl, I disagree. It’s all about where the bodice is cut, not necessarily boobage. I have a huge back piece that I like to show off and these days, I can’t find anything that doesn’t expose my modest bosom. There’s often gapping and other awkwardness.

    • P M

Anil, your little girl is at Cannes, in a phi-lum of her own. WELL DONE. (Anil Kapoor is her dad, and one of my ALL-TIME favorite Hindi movie actors. For those who want a great 80s Bollywood film, all camp and villainy, check out Mr. India. Cheesy as hell, but you get some of the greats: Amrish Puri as Mogambo, Sridevi at her campy best, and Anil being Anil – very likable and goofy. Don’t hate me for some of the worse songs in that movie)

      • VirginiaK

ha ha, I also love that movie – and think it was such a poor stroke of fate for Anil and SriDevi to be at their movie-star peaks in the weird 80s in Bollywood!! I think we can’t put links on here but if we could, I’d suggest Hawa Hawaii!!!

        • P M

Hawa Hawaii is like CHEESE HEAVEN – where the cheese goes to die. Or perhaps it’s the soundtrack to a cheesy vacation :D

    • http://sleepingfoxstitchery.weebly.com CLoverleaf

Scrolldown gasp. Someone should have worn this to the Met ball.

    • ktr33

      Ahhh… I feel serene…

    • Crystal

      That’s gorgeous!

Did she travel by helicopter? How the fuck did she stuff that into a limo and come out unscathed?

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Beautiful girl, feeling beautiful in a big beautiful dress. But not a Werq for me…. the skirt is too much and looks like it’s bent out of shape a bit. It’s just too much.

    • Allison Harris

That skirt is some Marie Antoinette realness. Love this look.

    • Tracie Rivera

All I can say is WOW!!!

    • B_C_J

This is not a werq for me. The dress is swallowing her. Additionally something odd is happening with the under structure because the skirt looks very uneven & at times weirdly shaped. Her hair & make up are lovely.

      • shirab

That’s the Polichinelles trying to escape.

    • YoungSally

I’m a little distracted by the skirt’s asymmetry in the second photo — the hoops/panniers don’t go down all that far and with the friction from the carpet and the hem, the line of the skirt can get a little wonky.

    • kmk05

A PANIER DRESS! My life is complete.

I just wished she had worn the ombré version.

    • Danielle

LIFE GOAL: wear a foofy princess ball gown and NAIL IT.

    • Julie Chase

Gorgeous, head-turning dress, but I am so sick of that pose ladies. All I see is Randy from A Christmas Story.

    • Jennifer Bober

Someone please give me a reason to wear a dress like this…please!!!

    • decormaven

Love those earrings! This is a statement dress, indeed.

    • imspinningaround

Her head is amazing and the dress is incredible, but STOP WITH THE COUTURE POSE I BEG YOU.

    • what not

Her head has a certain silent-movie star quality that I like. I think it’s the hair, brows, and lips. Very classic.

    • IAmJ

Exquisite. And I love that she knows it, too.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

It would please me to no end if she only had one of those earrings and the hair was a “make it work” moment…

    • Sobaika

Never thought I’d see Sonam Kapoor on TLo :)

She looks beautiful. I’d add a diamond or too, but that’s about it.

      • P M

I was thinking she needed a different colour, perhaps more bling, and some killer fake lashes, but I guess she was going glamour, not vavavavoom :D

      • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Agree. Some sparklers would have made it more royal. I wonder how Aishwarya looked tho.

    • lamamu

I wish she would’ve taken her hands off her hips for the posing. A little too sassy girlfriend. The dress though…j’adore.

    • demidaemon

Beautiful. Now I can nap with dreams of fabulousness.

    • Carleenml

I get it now. All the shouldabeens at the Met Gala were already packed up for Cannes.

      • Imasewsure

Yes I don’t think the Met Gala rates with the International folks as much as this grand event (sorry Anna Wintour but you are second rate… waaaa whaaaa)

    • GKaller

absolutely gorgeous. LOVE the straps in the back. the hands on the hips posing in everyyyy picture is a lot..but where else do you put your hands in a dress like that??

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Gorgeous. Someone is finally paying attention to old style Hollywood glamour….

    • MilaXX

It’s old school glamour. Not my cup of tea, but she nailed it with the hair & makeup.

    • Jessica Freeman

I can’t let this go as a WERQ with the crooked floofing situation. And it’s too much floof.

And yes, these are technical terms.

    • Filmjen

That is the most Grace Kellyish of Grace Kelly looks I’ve seen.

    • mjude

one can never loose in old school Hollywood glamour when its done right.

    • smayer

      Serving modern pannier realness. WERQ!

    • numenah

    • LadyVimes

OOOOoooOOOOOoOO LOVE. The shape of this dress is magnificent.

    • flamingoNW

That is the quintessential Cannes Film Festival dress. Wouldn’t quite work as well at the Oscars, somehow. Perfect!

    • Tricia Rose

The 4th photo is a little too “Exorcist” head spinning… but overall gothic princess is amazing!

    • marlie

      Beautiful! Channeling old-Hollywood glamour.

    • lalahartma

      Yay! No sideboob!

    • MM4321

Put. The. Arms. Down. The model looks so much better the model with arms down at side. In the one closeup with her head turned sideways I couldn’t tell if it was her front or back.

The look is gorgeous but a little too dark overall. She’d look amazing in a brighter color.

    • VirginiaK

Delighted you’re noticing Sonam Kapoor, her style sense is such a total pleasure. (For people who don’t know her, she is an Indian film actress, more or less Bollywood royalty as her dad is the Bollywood star Anil Kapoor who’s been in a few non-Bollywood projects, maybe most notabley Slumdog Millionaire and 24, on TV).

      • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

You mean Indian film star – actress is a bit of a reach with her, we have much better actresses :)

        • VirginiaK

You’re right of course – she was ok in Raanjhanaa though, I thought – better than I’d expected. I’ve realize that I do like her as a starry fashion presence, having started out not liking her so much at all.

    • conniemd

IIRC Elie Saab lined most of that couture collection proving that lined sheer can be perfectly gorgeous if done properly.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Her skirt is bigger than my first apartment.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

What a stunning woman. The most physically beautiful woman I know IRL is also called Sonam, so it must be in the name! The dress is very Hepburn-in-Sabrina, but it really needs a bracelet or a honking big cocktail ring.

    • Imma Mäder

      I want her eyebrows

    • Arelis Victor

WUT!? Wow, talk about an overreaction… this is pretty, but definitely not a WERQ

    • jonnyf8

Do they really go in and watch the movie after they do the rec carpet. And if so, how the heck do they sit down?

      • FibonacciSequins

They really do, but I have no idea how one sits in a movie theater seat wearing that dress.

    • GeoDiva

This should be on your end-of-the-year Top 10 List! WERQ!

    • mcbishop

What an amazing dress. I kept wondering why she has her hands on her hips…er…..waist, and then realized that maybe if she put them down they would float off to the sides. That is one crazy skirt.

    • Mrs. O

Oh my! What loveliness! Where is Prince Charming? She deserves a guy in a powder blue military uniform! And she deserves and amazing big diamond bracelet.

    • FibonacciSequins

    • Qitkat

      So very Black Swan.

    • Truthiness2U

Loved this look, dress, hair, make-up…all are WERQing for me. And yes, like many others, I was wondering why this, and the pink/floral/black dress from the same Elie Saab collection, didn’t make an appearance at that Met Ball.

Oh and yes, like that it’s lined, and how it’s constructed on the sides to not have sideboob, leading to that nice back look with those black ribbons.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

THIS is what Dior should be. WERQ’s left right and centre. *sigh*

    • frannyprof

Hooray for the return of big poofy skirts on the RC!

    • LeelaST

She should have been at the Met Gala.

    • andi56

That’s one hell of a crinoline! Fabulous. If she had a different nose, she could totally diva-rock a biopic of Maria Callas, La Divina.

    • AnneElliot

Wow. Bowing DOWN. This should be in the dictionary as the definition of “WERQ.”

And I’m especially impressed by the lack of side boob. THAT’s how you do a backless dress and look classy!!

    • quiltrx

Is it wrong to say this is VERY WERQ? Or WERQ PLUS 1? This is one of my favorite gowns from that collection, and the styling is pitch-perfect.
It’s very vintage-Dior-reminiscent. I miss ‘real’ Dior. But Elie Saab is one of my favorite designers!

      • Sly

How about WERQ D’OR as this is Cannes and they give out a Palme d’Or?

        • quiltrx

          I like :)

    • http://trooperschaf.blogspot.de/ TrooperSchaf

the 4th picture is anatomically weird… but the dress and the woman are gorgeous.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Anything that involves panniers gets a WERQ from me!

    • kim bunchalastnames

that is a whole LOT of perfection. but the fourth photo — it somehow looks (to me) as if it’s a shot of her back: head-turning in a not so fabulous way.

    • webslice33

umm, NO! Blake Lively looked better than this!

    • JynxTheCat

I love the contrast of her PURE sunshine and self-pleased to the model of doom.
