Octavia Spencer at the USC Shoah Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala

Posted on May 09, 2014

Miss Octavia, this is all working quite well for this kind of venue, but we have some suggestions.

No need to thank us.

The shape is great and the sparkle at the waist pulls it back from coming off a little drab. The shoes and the pedi look great with it. But you could use a little something at the neckline, to light up your face. A necklace would’ve done a lot here, but killer earrings wouldn’t have been unwelcome. Also: it’s a cliche to say “pop of color” anymore, but really, this was an opportunity to do something interesting in the clutch area. If not necessarily color, then at least a little sparkle or pattern or texture.

Oh gosh, I thought the clutch was part of the dress!

    • Ditto.

    • sienna elm

Me too! I’ve seen suits where the pants & jacket don’t blend as well as this dress & clutch.

    • kimmeister

An UGLY part of the dress, at that, as if the beaded waist detail had a . . . tongue sticking up.

    • e jerry powell

That seems like an easy mistake to make.

    • demidaemon

Me too. I had to stare at it for a hard minute to determine it wasn’t. An extreme example of why matching your accessories to your outfit can be a big no-no.

  • MilaXX

A bolder lip and a sparkly bag would have taken this to the next level.

    • Kayceed

Exactly – it’s too monochromatic – needs a bit of contrast in color or texture to add a bit of oomph.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Just a touch of color on her lip would have elevated Octavia’s look.

  • Janet B

Not a fan of that hair with this dress.

    • Looks like her wig is askew. Whether it’s a wig or not.

    • GillianHolroyd

Kill those bangs. Her hair is crowding out her face.

  • ashtangajunkie

Didn’t even notice that she was carrying a clutch. Would have loved more lippy and some sparkle on the ears.

  • Kimbolina

What color is this dress? It looks black in some shots but sort of green in others…

    • SugarSnap108

We had the same burning question, at exactly the same moment.

      • CT14

I’m with Sarah above and hope that it is the green that we think it is.

  • SugarSnap108

What color is this dress? It’s like a mood ring.

    • Sarah

I’m hoping it is green. I like the color green I think it is…

      • SugarSnap108

I’ve decided it’s green, because I like that shade, too.

      • CakesOnAPlane

I enjoy how in each picture, her hair matches the color of the dress.

  • Dan_In_NYC

    Not my favorite wig.

  • I couldn’t even tell this was green until the close ups. Pops of color help with telling dark colors apart from washed out blacks…

  • deelup

It’s Captain’s Night on her cruise.

  • SewingSiren

She and Christina Hendricks need wig interventions.

    • Imasewsure

You are right… it’s basically the same wig and it doesn’t do either of these gorgeous ladies any favors

  • amanda siegelson

those two bottom shots make this look green – and i can’t help but think what if it WAS a really nice hunter green??? smashing! i love black, but it’s been there and done that.

    • marlie

I had the exact same thought. The dress is very nice in black, but it could have been FAB in green.

  • GeoDiva

Glad I am not the only one who was trying to find my eye doctor’s number this morning. Is it grey, black or green?

  • KendraMR

Ugh, I hate that wig. I wish I could steal it from her and burn it.

  • She has gorgeous eyes.

  • Qitkat

This just comes across as rather dull. And the way she is holding that clutch made me think it was a weird element of the dress design. I’ve never seen one match so perfectly to the dress fabric. Dying for a spot of color there.

  • jilly_d

She is the only person I’ve ever seen whose feet actually look pretty in those naked shoes. Sorcery?

  • tallgirl1204

I am jealous of her pretty feet.

  • BLauD

Yup, totally thought the clutch was a part of her dress. Not that I can tell what is happening because I’ve got to know if it’s all black or green!

  • I want this dress in every colour of the rainbow. 🙂 Perfect sleeve length too.

  • semirose

I’m really glad that’s a clutch and not some weird underarm frippery the designer felt the need to add.

  • Jessica Freeman

Penalty for inappropriate clutch holding in which people think there is some kind of odd draping technique.

  • nannypoo

Beautiful dress for her. She looks great as usual.

  • Danielle

I wasn’t head over heels until I saw it was actually a green. She’s on my irrational love list anyway, so IN for me.

  • Skippymom1

Did they forget to put make up on her neck? It looks as tho’ there is a shirt underneath the dress that is the exact shade of her face make up, while her neck sticks out unadorned. On closer inspection it isn’t a shirt….What gives? Or am I the only one that sees a different color palette between face/chest and neck?

  • You know.. I had a funny feeling I had seen this dress before on Octavia and loved it equally that time.. So I clicked on the Octavia Spencer tag, and lo and behold – just two Octavia posts ago we saw this dress! It was back in January.. 🙂 I think she loves it as much as I love it on her..

    • holla

are you sure it’s different color and not different lighting? looks like she’s rewearing the same dress. Still, she looks very good. Shoes look a bit tight though.

    • FibonacciSequins

You’re right! I love this dress on her too, and I love that she’s not afraid of wearing it more than once.

      • marlie

        If it ain’t broke…

        • demidaemon

Yes. But, I think she really needed to style the crap out of it, which she hasn’t.

    • demidaemon

I had the exact same feeling and posted as such and was hoping for a correction or confirmation on my impression.

  • Ginmaru

I really like this dress on her. I wonder how Christina Hendricks would look in this design.

  • Constant Reader

I find myself wishing her hair wasn’t hiding so much of her beautiful face, and I agree about a little sparkle at the neck or ears or on the clutch. But the dress looks great on her.

  • mjude

I had to look twice to find the clutch.

  • JaCory Deon

Must be in the minority here but I think she looks so drab here! From that sad hair to that nothing makeup and dull color, no.

  • crash1212

She has sad hair and that’s all I can see.

    • She has a sad face, expression-wise, which I’ve noticed in a lot of the pictures of her that TLo have posted lately. Even her smiles look forced. I hope she’s doing okay.

  • B_C_J

This dress is gorgeous on her. However she lost the accessory battle . She needed diamond earrings & bracelet & I would have loved to have seen a stronger lip.

  • Imasewsure

I’m not liking anything here except for the lady herself. Dull and drab (and way too safe, even for a daytime charity event)

  • Guest

Miss Octavia looks like she’s dropped a few pounds. Still curvalicious. So I approve.

  • marlie

I think Octavia looks great, but some contrast *somewhere* would have been nice. Though it’s weird; in one of the closeups, her dress and clutch look dark green, and I realized that this look would have been THAT much better in a rich color like that.

  • Mr. J.

No real comment about anything….I just love to look at her.

  • e jerry powell

Two different photographers, I see, but is this garment slate blue or a deep green?

    • LambeeBaby

I don’t see color at all. Black dress, shoes and bag. Looks funerary on my screen. Good shillouette though.

  • demidaemon

I feel like she has worn this dress before. Maybe it’s just because she has found the perfect silhouette for herself, but it feels like she has worn this EXACT dress. Maybe BKs with better memories can correct or confirm my impression.

Not to say that she doesn’t look great and that stars shouldn’t reuse clothes. It just seems like TPTB frown on that sort of behavior.

  • Kate

I like the teal. I’m glad there are extra photos – because some of them read “gray” — and the teal is way prettier. It is a good color for her. I thought the clutch was part of the dress/waistband too!

    • P M

I was surprised at how the colour changed based on the exposure and flash, no?!

    • Wait, were there other photos originally posted? Because in the photos I’m seeing now, the dress looks black in the properly lit photos but looks like a very dark, brackish green in the overexposed ones.

  • FridaStaire

…and I’d like you to put your hair up so we can appreciate your lovely face better.

    • P M

Wouldn’t that look rather ‘Sunday at church’?

  • smayper

Clutch tucked under the arm strikes me as bad use of a prop. Since, to my mind, clutches are props.

  • Laughingworld

Given that this was for the Shoah Foundation she may have felt that too much color and glitz would be inappropriate.

  • girlsaturday

Additional piece of advice: don’t tuck your clutch under your arm right above the applique on on your dress. It will look like a dick and balls, and I assume that’s not something you were going for,

  • The dress has such a lovely shape! She always nails it. I love the colour too.

  • GURL…get your nails done!

  • Mrs. O

She looks lovely! Absolutely lovely. But, I agree, a little color would have been super. And something to draw our eyes to her beautiful, beautiful face.
