Matt Bomer in Tom Ford at “The Normal Heart” New York Screening

Posted on May 13, 2014

Boys: do no attempt this level of pattern mixing at home. Matt Bomer is a genetically superior driver on an enclosed track.

Good lord, that man is pretty.

We joke about the pattern-mixing. Have at it, fashionistos. Just know that pretty people get a free pass on a lot of style choices that don’t work on mortal folk. It’s not that you absolutely have to look like Matt Bomer to rock a floral, a polka dot and a plaid all in one look, but it sure as hell helps.

It’s a shame the jacket’s just a skosh too tight on him because the fit is perfect otherwise. How tiny is that thing, anyway? We don’t get the impression that Matt needs to have is jackets let out all that often (or ever).

I know he and I bat for the same team but he still makes my ovaries tingle.

    • Judih1

ME TOO! And the fact that he is willing to take creative chances with his clothing choices (and does it well) let’s me know that he would be creative in other ways……..

    • Shug

That’s not the area of my reproductive system where he causes tingles.

  • Christine Hart

He would have been a GREAT Superman based on looks alone.

    • ashtangajunkie

    • myandyleigh

I’m sure I read somewhere that eyes that blue and sparkly come packaged with x-ray vision so he’d have that going for him. I’m all in!

I don’t believe there is anything you could put on him or take off of him that would make him anything other than smokin’ hot. But if they’d like to try the taking off approach I’m more than willing to…help. πŸ˜‰

    • Trent

He would have to have done a LOT of bulking up to play Kal-El, and I’m partial to Hot Cavill myself. But — SO PRETTY and I love the Master Class-Level pattern mixing here.

  • FibonacciSequins

    Truly impressive.

  • TDSE

    I REALLY want that tie.

  • So, so pretty.

  • ashtangajunkie

I want to hang 100 photos of him in my office, like it’s a locker and I’m in seventh grade.

    • 25or6to4

I’ve got the Mod Podge ready β€” Bomer decoupage, anyone?

    • alyce1213

I’m glad I’m not the only one who becomes inappropriately adolescent at the sight of him. He always puts effort into publicity photo opps like this, but he’s best live and talking.

    • MerBearStare

I have Mrs. Matt Bomer written on my trapper keeper.

      • alyce1213

I used to be Mrs. Richard Chamberlain. (I date myself.)

        • Jacqueline Wessel

          I was Mrs. Paul McCartney.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

You and many others. I think it was Shogun that put me in the Chamberlain camp.

          • SierraDelta

      • Shug

I’m still currently engaged to Joey McIntyre.

        • Anna

Nice, I was Mrs. Jordan Knight for 4 years, and then it was Mrs. Eddie Furlong.

      • Mrs. David Cassidy here. I glued photos of him to my furniture. It was true love.

    • GeoDiva

My 17-yr old daughter has already done that. He is all over her room.

  • Anna

“You know the difference between you and me? I make THIS look good.”

    • Kitten Mittons

I sincerely hope that he’s saying this to James Marsden and his plaid suit from yesterday. THIS is how you do pattern mixing, James, darling.

  • cloudyblue

He could pull off anything he pleases. No one would notice because THAT FACE.

  • B_C_J

I don’t think even he is pulling off the multiplicity of patterns. It’s a bit migraine inducing. Luckily the color palate is limited.

    • smayer

I think the plaid should be smaller. It’s the similarity in size of the plaid and polka dots, especially right next to each other.

  • NBG

Baskets of puppies feel inadequate in this man’s presence.

    • Anna

I’m imagining him rescuing the basket of puppies!

      Matt Bomer and puppies…because, reasons.

  • stellamaris73

Is it wrong that I feel mildly disappointed that this is a straight-out-of-the-lookbook outfit? Because that is some epic pattern-mixing and I so want to salute him for it.

    • Denise Alden

I was let down, too, when I saw the model.

      • Wink

Yeah… like looking at a department store mannequin and saying, “I’ll take that EXACT outfit!” Should change it up at least a little to ‘make it your own’ as they say.

        • Sarah

He did add socks, for which I am personally grateful.

          • SierraDelta

Genetically superior male specimens shield us from the perfection of their bare ankles. (They considerately provide only one focal point at a time.) It’s for our own good and shows that our potential spontaneous combustion at the sight is of utmost concern to them.

        • 25or6to4

Well, he did add his face, which is the best accessory to the outfit, so…

        • Janet B

Few could wear straight-out-of-the-lookbook and make it sing. Although most men could change out the shirt or tie for a solid look fantastic.

    • alyce1213

I had the same reaction. But if I don’t think about it, it doesn’t take away from how beautiful. He did wear socks!

    • marlie

This is actually one of the few times when it *doesn’t* bother me. But generally, I agree with you.

    • He wore socks and zhushed the pocket square – very minor tweaks but I think they made a world of difference.

  • boweryboy

Meh. I’m feeling the pattern mixing but him (that sounds dirty). He has pretty features – eyes, nose, mouth, hair, bone structure – but those features somehow come together in an odd way.

    • Kitten Mittons

Would’ve sounded dirtier the other way around.

But I’m with you; he’s very handsome but doesn’t get my motor going.

  • Alyssa

He’s so pretty…and he puts in the effort. Le sigh.

  • And once again, we give him his props, because Matty never just phones it in.
But let’s face it…Tom Ford never designed an accessory as flattering as that big ol’ smile.

  • Chuck Barthelme

He needs to help out James Marsden with his skills. I love a plaid and polka dot combo. Nicely done, and perfectly fitted. Even the floral on the pocket square is perfect. Impressive.

    • 25or6to4

Oh god, now you’ve got me fantasizing about Matt Bomer and James Marsden going clothes shopping (and, of course, making out)… Too much pretty in one little daydream!

      • caroline

Mercy! Excuse me, I need to step out for a moment.

    • j_am

In all fairness, he’s an exact replica of the model. So, yay Tom Ford?

      • Chuck Barthelme

Actually, that’s a good point. Really the only work he’s done is to be himself in the suit, then.

        • j_am

Oh, that is totally enough πŸ™‚

        • Kitten Mittons

Even so, I still agree. This made me so happy compared to James’ attempt yesterday.

  • Jessica Freeman

Matt gets all the points for wearing socks, unlike the model. Adore the polka dot ties today!

    • Mr. J.

Totally agree. No socks turns anything into a Miss Thing moment.

  • JauntyJohn

Beyond the genetics I’m pretty much a solid Bomer Booster.
But this pattern pairing is not working for me. It’s jarring. I’m all for mixing it up – clothes are Art (sometimes) and all that, but this is not working for me at all.
Glad to see it was on the model and not a Bright Idea from someone on Team Matt.
I vote No. (To the patterns. Yes to Matt.)

  • TM

That tie/shirt combo might be the greatest thing I’ve seen on a man in ages.

(Also, of course I really do want to/should see this movie–but I’m getting really panic-y and depressed just thinking about sitting through it. I’ll need a ton of froyo to get through this.)

  • Courtenay P

    dat face…is he human?

  • Shawn EH

Boy WERQ! Of course. His is the only good “of course.”

  • MannahattaMamma

sheeeit. He embodies impeccable. With the emphasis on bodies. Goodness.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

I lost all the eggs in my ovaries. All the good ones are gay.

  • mjude

he would go perfect with my fan bingbing doll

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

They could sell them as a set at Christmas. πŸ™‚

  • snarkykitten

    Hot damn.

  • BazoDee

He lost 35+ pounds for this role – so he’s been gaining it back. Hence the fit issues I think.

    • MilaXX

Aren’t movies typically filmed a year+ before release? Pretty sure he’s regained that weight. It’s just an off fit.

      • demidaemon

Yes, but I believe this was made for TV, so it probably has a much shorter production schedule.

        • MilaXX

Why did I think this was a theatrical release. You’re probably correct.

          • demidaemon

Because it probably should be, as was the Liberace biopic, but it had to be made for HBO because most Hollywood execs are a bunch of conservative naysayers.

      • CPT_Doom

According to an interview I saw with Bomer, he finished shooting just before Thanksgiving, so it’s been a few months. Apparently after eating about 300 – 400 calories a day to lose the weight (under doctor’s supervision, thankfully), he thought he could just indulge on Turkey Day and his body totally rebelled, although he claimed after that it was very easy to gain the weight back.

        • MilaXX

          Yeah I just saw that.

  • Gatto Nero

Well, he copied the look on the model, so it wasn’t rocket science.
But he looks great. Well done.

  • alyce1213

This is post-doctorate level pattern mixing, sophisticated, clean, perfectly complementary. I can’t believe they worked in a graphic flower print – genius.
At first, I felt a little bad that he copied the model’s look exactly (+ socks), but it’s perfect, so it was the right choice. I lurve him.

  • It’s Kimmy

    So fresh and so clean!

  • littlevase

Love the whole look, he wears it well. I like a touch more manmeat on my menfolk. He’s kind of lollipoppish here.

    • kimmeister

      All the more lickable, then!

  • Ashleigh

love love love. And I love when he flashes those teeth. His closed lip smile is stiff!

  • gloriana232

I don’t think it works on him. The pattern mixing is interesting but not done in a way that complements a person who is wearing it seemingly seriously. It comes off like he sticks to a B+W palette because he knows he can’t carry off pattern-mixing at all otherwise, not because it helps the patterns actually work together.

This kind of pattern-mixing — where everything is a little outsized and is on the verge of being silly rather than balanced and harmonious — would work better on someone more of a whimsical-witty dresser like Alan Cummings. He’d be wearing some fab hair and striking poses and wearing super colourful socks that totally wreck the entire illusion of trying to make everything go together.

I guess I don’t even know who this guy is (SORRY) so maybe this thought doesn’t count.

Also, maybe this doesn’t matter to some people, but it bugs me his shirt cuffs can’t be seen, not even when he has his hands raised.

    • ktr33

agree re shirt cuffs. A no-no, always.

  • ktr33

teensy weensie tiny quibbles: would’ve preferred a pointed collar. Round is a little “teddy boy” for the rest of the outfit. And I always always want to see a titch of shirt cuff out of the jacket sleeve. Otherwise: WERQ

  • Lisalady161

Your first sentence of the bottom paragraph. Yes to infinity

  • lalahartma

    Looking good!

  • deliadee

I was mightily impressed with the pattern mixing until I saw he copied it exactly from the model pic. Looks great on him, if a skootch too tight (and I noticed this on my own! Reading TLo is educational!).

  • dmkava

    goofy funky. thumbs down

  • traceyishere

The jacket does not lay correctly around his neck, this could have been better.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Am I hallucinating, or are those some high waisted suit pants?

  • Danielle

Man, this is Doing It for me.

  • MilaXX

I love this look. I wish the jacket sat right because otherwise, perfect. Gosh is really is purdy. I’m hearing good buzz about this movie so far.

  • Fanofgoodart

First look: Shock, Second: hmm wow!, Third: totally in love with it. In any case, props to Matt, he always dresses effortfully according to what role he is promoting often looking effortless in the process. He plays a gay fashion reporter in the movie The Normal Heart. He chose the right outfit for the event & of course I can’t think of any other actor making that outfit beautiful, artistic, and masculine all at the same time. Matt Bomer is a delightful combination of things that normally don’t go together but with him they take on whole another level.

  • decormaven

Agree with the question on the jacket fit. Everything else- he is working it well. Really looking forward to seeing his performance in this film.

  • James

He’s so pretty, it’s painful but I must say, that pattern mixing is painful as well. He is a bit too pretty, too perfect, for this type of matching. This would work for someone a bit nutty.

    • i think the model really nailed the look with those no-socks loafers.

  • Fuchsiaforever

    He looks possessed.

  • Imasewsure

Oops… I read “partner mixing” not “pattern mixing.” I had a very discreet mental flash of a very nice weekend indeed for our dear uncles… oh yes, and I approve of the pattern mixing as well…

  • Janet B

    He takes my breath away.

  • Mothra

  • matt bomer is like the rock hudson of our time, a heartthrob for all genders. which is a reminder to us to be thankful that we live in a time when an actor can wear his gayness proudly with no need for the closet. other than to store his fabulous clothes in.

  • Shelby

God, he needs a WERQ just for living and breathing and gracing our computer screens…

  • demidaemon

I love that pocket square. It really makes the outfit.

  • Lucinda Head

The world’s next top pocketsquare: we have a winner!

  • e jerry powell

What, did he just kill the model and flay the suit off of him as is?

  • marlie

We usually ask the celebs to not reproduce the “runway” look exactly, but this time, It’s perfection. I LOOOOOVE the three patterns. This is NOT for amateurs.

    • Eric Stott

It DOES look great, but I’d give him higher points if he’d come up with this on his own instead of just buying “Ensemble in a box”

  • Jacob Bowen

This is PERFECT for a day spent sitting in an airplane because of delays…thank you Mr. Bomer, you light up my life.

  • Kentington

I’m not impressed…it’s not really anything special to wear the exact same outfit as the model in the look-book. I’ll bet the salesperson that sold him these (or the stylist who loaned them to him) had a copy too.

    • Mink Carlyle

I’m pretty certain he didn’t have to pay for any part of this outfit. LOL

      • Kentington

Right!? OH, TO BE A CELEBRITY. (sigh)

  • Yolanda

Every time I see him, my very first thought is, “Mother of God he’s pretty!” My only quibble is the one that the Uncles had – that jacket is a tad to snug. But I’m so transfixed by his eyes that I hardly care.

  • Mink Carlyle

To be honest, I think he looked just about perfect here. If you can pull off the designer’s vision, why not? I do so love how he always put the effort in.

  • ThaliaMenninger

He’s perfection. Except the hair. Not into the hair. Everything else is lovely, however.

  • mrspotts66

oh, i love how his face lights up when he smiles full on!

  • jjfg

Honestly, I don’t think I’d notice if he were wearing a burlap sack.

  • semirose

Hah way to make me feel insecure about my pattern-mixing (I kid, I think the b/w polka dot dress I wore the other day with b/w striped shoes w/green heel and b/w houndstooth purse worked great) but goodness what a pretty man.

  • My ovaries just exploded.

  • lundibleu

Ah, pretty pretty Matt. I’m not sure if the jacket is too tight for him, or if it’s just the way it’s designed. It looks too small on the model too.

    • yllas

I think that is the style. I see pictures of men at public events in too-tight suit jackets ALL the time. (online. IRL I don’t see them in suits at all!)

      • lundibleu

I’ve seen some wearing properly fitted jackets, but if the too tight is the style then it’s yet another case of “go home fashion, you’re drunk”

  • LadyVimes

I’d ride with him. I’d ride with him all night long.
Pretty boys are my kryptonite. Even if they swing the other way, a girl can still dream.

  • Man Dala

    I love him.

  • quiltrx

I was all impressed by this, ’til I saw this was total “Straight from the Catalog” material. As a quilter, I’m always going to love pattern-mixing. I think the circles of the tie are too close in size to the squares of the shirt, but it’s a quibble.
Oh, and I have some Lakehouse quilting fabric exactly like that shirt fabric!

  • unbornfawn

He sure is pretty. A little too much pattern mixing for my blood.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, the jacket is a tad too tight, but given Matt’s incredible gorgeousness and his innate ability to make this work, I’m OK with the final result. HIs husband is a lucky, lucky man.

  • I literally (as in not figuratively) just got goosebumps scrolling through these pictures. Ah, if only every pretty man could make his clothing set his looks off so well. Ahhhh.

    Seriously, refreshed.

  • malarson2

The pattern mixing works for me because it’s not overwhelming and it’s with a simple suit. I mean really, who else is going to get away with it? PS – heard his performance in The Normal Heart is transformative.

  • SierraDelta

Qitkat, I’m sprawled on the floor, bedazzled by Mr. Bomer’s genetic superiority — is that you next to me?

  • cocohall

He doesn’t do much for me – I get why others find him attractive – but he is just not the lid to my pot, as they say. But he looks sharp here. No denying that, even if it is pretty much a repeat of the runway look. And so few boystars make an effort that I am clapping as I’m typing. Mentally clapping, that is.

  • julnyes

He continues to do nothing for me, but I can always appreciate a well turned out gentleman.

  • kim bunchalastnames

well, to be fair, he’s pretty much wearing the same thing the model has on, but without flaunting his bare ankles like a hoor. … what? too scottish?

  • DesertDweller79

    Oh, he’s so beautiful. Wow.

  • Damn, he’s pretty, and he’s working those patterns.

  • 0 points for creativity, but yes, he looks GOOD.
