Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Christian Dior Cruise 2015 Show

Posted on May 09, 2014

We could almost weep over this lady’s style evolution. We’d like to think that time we said she looks like she smells like nursing home pee really jolted her out of her complacency.

The hair and makeup aren’t quite up to the standards of the outfit (they both look half-assed and DIY), but everything below the neck looks amazing. And she never would have dressed like this a few years ago. She was always into fashion, when the mood struck her, but she went for funkier, edgier stuff and didn’t seem to know how to make it work. We still think she could manage the right kind of edgy, but we’re perfectly happy with her working a clean retro look. And by “retro,” we mean that in the broadest way possible. This looks like ’60s, but she’s been effectively working ’30s and ’70s-inspired looks recently too.

We wish the skirt had a better shape to it, though. We like the boxiness of the jacket, but the lower half flares out just a bit too much.

Really cute! Her hair looks like a toddler who just woke up, but her outfit is so perky I can’t be mad.

    • Courtenay P

      great legs

    • @Biting Panda

      J’adore!

    • Danielle

The pearl white is divine on her. Hair is laughable.

    • deech_sea

      Super cute!

    • Capt. Renault

Her facial expression in that last picture reminds me of Dr. Z. Don’t do that, Maggie.

      • eowyn_of_rohan

That’s the best laugh I’ve had all day. I rode to work this morning staring at Dr. Z.

        • DTLAFamilies

Good God, there are still Dr. Z posters on the subway? Signed, former New Yorker.

          • eowyn_of_rohan

Oh, yes. Signed, lifelong Manhattanite who cannot escape Dr. Z’s visage on the 1 train.

    • Moriginal

TLo’s nursing home pee comment is still one of my all time favorites.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I could clap my hands over Maggie’s evolution-this is so cute.

    • mjude

      kinda digging this

    • MilaXX

I’m not completely in love with this. The roots need a touch up and I think she looks better in red lips than pink. I like the idea of the suit, but I’m not crazy about the shape of the skirt. I HATE dark hose with white outfits like this. It’s a pet peeve and never looks good in my eyes. Overall I like that she is no longer dressing like a bag lady and putting forth so effort with fashion, this just has too many quibbles to work for me.

      • http://www.franticbutfabulous.com/ Heidi/FranticButFab

I can’t get on board with the shiny white suit and dark hose either. It looks like a clash of two outfits.

      • sojourneryouth

Agreed on all points. Also, I don’t think that boxy jacket shape suits her. She is smaller-proportioned up top, so the boxiness obscures her girls in a not-flattering way. I applaud the moves towards a more polished look, because she can look really cute with the right outfit and head suit, but this ain’t it.

      • SugarSnap108

There have been two times in my life when I thought a woman wearing a white dress with black hose looked good. They stand out in my mind because it’s so rare.

      • Erica

I agree. The only time I can think that dark hose with a white skirt is acceptable is if the hose are underneath some kickass black boots.

        • smayper

I had an instant problem with the black hose, too. But the more I look at it, the less I hate it. Definitely not for mere mortals, though.

    • msdamselfly

This is horrible. Makes her thighs look big.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Maybe it’s just because she usually dresses a bit mature, but I am finding this a bit too youthful.

    • SewingSiren

Beautiful. This looks like what Mia Farrow wore when she married Frank Sinatra. Bad marriage , but great wedding dress.

      • mjude

omg you are so right abut Mia & Francis as she liked to call him. I love it even more now :)

      • vitaminC

Woah, almost a perfect ringer! You have a sharp eye.

      • decormaven

        On the button!

    • teensmom99

Hard to see anything bit those amazing gams. That’s a good thing.

    • clatie

really? I think this is pretty terrible.

    • Rhonda Shore

I love this outfit and i love her hair. The bleached blond/dark roots really work on her.

    • Richard Harper

Agreed re the skirt; love the jacket. Her hair, however…

    • Mothra

      Padded white room couture!

    • smayer

Points for not dressing like an old lady, but cloning Michelle Williams isn’t the way to go, either.

    • Skippymom1

Sorry, but even if the skirt wasn’t boxy, it is still waaaay too short for her. That wouldn’t even pass dress code at the local HS for length. Her legs are beautiful, but that is simply the wrong skirt. And she looks uncomfortable in the jacket, as though she wishes there was something else in there with her. It’s not tailored well. If Taylor Swift wore this everyone would be saying “twee”, but in MG’s case it’s a “you’re trying to hard.” I do like her hair and make up tho.

    • MissusBee

I like the shape, but the white makes it a bit beauty counter assistant to me (albeit in a cool retro-futuristic way, like if you were having your pores analysed on a space ship or something).

    • Nimith

The skirt and boxy jacket make the whole look seem a bit half arsed to me. I can’t decide if they look like butchered sheets or re-purposed wrapping paper.

    • formerlyAnon

I like this a lot. And I’m in awe of whomever decided that yes, this white will work with your hair. Because it does.

    • padma sallah

I dig all aspects of this except the hose and the lipstick. They clash really badly with the entire outfit and of the two, the hose is the bigger offender. It just does not go with this pearly white. I think she should have gone with no hose or a hose that was opaque.

    • LilyVanessi

This is definitely an improvement for her, but it looks like she got dressed intending to put something else on and changed her mind at the last minute. The black hose and black shoes do not go with this outfit.

    • MarissaLG

I think this look is really cute. Nitpicking: Not loving the dark roots, and think she should have gone for a bold lash to pump up the twiggy vibe.

    • Super_Red

ooooh, I’m just not feeling this. And not only that, but her body language doesn’t read to me like she’s feeling it either.

    • another_laura

I’m sorry to see that her face has an “I’m kind of uncomfortable in this” expression on it, because it’s really such a huge step in a good direction! That having been said, I have quibbles, namely, she needs a better support garment, it’s a tad too short and don’t like this bag with it.

    • MW

Skirt is too short and too flared, the whole thing is awfully shiny, the tights don’t go, the clutch clashes, and the lip colour is terrible. In other news, I don’t get the love.

    • KendraMR

Cute look. I really like her as a blonde (although her roots are crying for a touch up); it’s suits her better than her natural brunette hair.

    • ashtangajunkie

I am loving her style lately, which makes me happy because I adore her…Minus the former nursing home pee style phase.

    • cmb123

Lovely. I really dig the jacket. I feel like the pink lip would look great if the rest of the face/hair matched. This is an atta girl!

    • Jessica Freeman

The girl got smart and got some hired help. Brava.

    • crash1212

I like it. Just looks like everything need a good zhuzh before camera time.

    • Joanna

I’m telling you, it’s the hair. If she had bee a brunette with this outfit, it would not have had the same edge and effect. I think she was born to be blonde.

    • Glam Dixie

Grading on a curve this is pretty good but for her age that skirt is too short, but then so was Julia Roberts’ skirt yesterday. Leave mini skirts to the younger girls.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

You could call that outfit retro. Or, you could call it Dentist Smock / Chorus Line Member. But I do like the jacket, perhaps with some other pairing.

    • B_C_J

I love her in this. She has a quirky, retro look & this outfit falls directly into that category. She looks wonderful. I just wish her hair was all blonde. I am not a fan of roots & I wish her eyes were just a tad stronger.

    • FibonacciSequins

Looks like she slept on wet hair and didn’t comb it before going out. The makeup is atrocious. The skirt’s too short for a woman her age. Come to think of it, the jacket’s the only thing I like here.

    • KT

Fabulous! Good for her. On most people I’d say this hair isn’t quite right, but it looks quirky-chic on her, which is fitting. And regardless, it’s a hundred thousand times better than the sad, limp mop it used to look like.

She’s serving up sassy 80s Sharon Stone realness here, and I approve.

    • leilah

She should try to only be photographed from the angle in the first shot … only … I would’ve applauded, but was frozen in shock. She looks delightful–eyes up, smile … a whole new Maggie (unlike the last shot)!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

      Look at those amazing stems!

She’s another one who I like more the more horrifying her outfits are. There are very few celebs who do that for me.

I recently watched Stranger Than Fiction again, for the 100th time. I just love her. That one scene when you can see in her face, the exact moment when she falls in love. It’s so great.

That, and she has excellent taste in husbands and brothers. She is more bear-adjacent than I am. I am jealous.

    • Wink

The skirt seems like it should go with another top. Don’t know if it’s the top or her bra, but her boobs are just lost. Reminds me of the scene in “The Proposal” where Betty White is trying to find Sandra Bullock’s breasts!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

And here I thought you guys were going to follow up nursing home pee smell with straight-jacket couture. Alas, no.

    • Judy_J

I normally would not approve of black hose with a white skirt, but for some reason it works on Ms Gyllenhaal. She’s got legs, and she knows how to use them!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

That haircut and dye job seems to have unlocked her inner reservoir of fabulous. The skirt definitely flares too much, but remembering what she used to dress like all I can do are vicarious victory fist-pumps.

    • LeelaST

      Adorable. Love her.

    • Danielle

Wait, and explain the venue to me. Is there going to be an all-Dior cruise sailing in 2015? Shut up and take my money!

    • Miss wks

Nope. I don’t care and I’m not buyin’ it. She may look ok in it but it’s not her or her personality. Therefore, it renders the attempt a wasted opportunity.

    • marlie

I don’t love the sheer black tights, and her makeup is a little too colorless, but really, those are mino quibbles. This is a pretty fantastic look for her. SUCH a cute outfit.

    • Imasewsure

Scroll down Yeah… not perfect but really cute and such a nice surprise!

    • DuBey2

I haven’t really loved her look in anything since she went so blonde. I’m probably the only one. However, I DO agree that she is trying and this is a huge step in fashion forward direction for her. Just wish her hair was darker.

    • kimmeister

What a boring choice for a clutch. This would have been the perfect outfit with which to deploy something with a crazy pattern.

    • demidaemon

I wish the skirt wasn’t so short, but I lve the deployment of the tights and the shiny white fabric. It’s an Attagirl for me.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the flair of the skirt with that boxy jacket.

    • alyce1213

I think that suit is really cute on her. Could be a couple of inches longer and her hair looks pasty, but those are quibbles.

    • nannypoo

It’s too short, but I don’t want to discourage her. She looks great. The hair is strange but I sort of like it.

    • Kate

cute! they must have some killer lights on that step/repeat – because she is definitely squinting. I love her.

    • Brittney P

She looks cute, but I do not like the hair.

Fashion friends, help a girl out! I have a pixie cut and am going to be standing in my friend’s wedding soon. Since growing it out isn’t really an option (mainly because I look cute as hell with short hair and don’t want to give it up just yet), I’m at a loss as to what to do with my hair that doesn’t look so “DIY.” Any suggestions?

      • Annistella

I always thought short hair Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors looked stunning, and offered a range of ways to ‘do’ short hair. There is a scene when her character is hosting an event and she is wearing a simple shoestring black dress with red roses twisted into her hair. I loved that look. Also, pin curls (or ‘finger waves’ as they are referred to on very short hair because you can do them by hand, prepped with a hot iron) look gorgeous, and a nice little vintage twist. From memory, I think Maggie Gyllenhaal was partial to them with her brown hair in pixie cut.

        • Brittney P

Thanks so much! I’m going to have to check that out!

        • malarson2

I love that movie and one of the main reasons is because of Gwyneth’s hair in it! It’s really really cute hair. Good suggestion.

    • http://www.paolathomas.com/ PaolaT

I’m a brunette with a pixie cut and for years I have been toying with the idea of going platinum blonde. Thanks Maggie Gyllenhall for demonstrating how horribly ageing it would be…

    • what not

      She looks so uncomfortable!

    • enchanted216

I respectfully disagree. She’s dressed like an 80 year old.

    • FridaStaire

I wish the tights were more opaque, but you’re lovely, Maggie!

    • gefeylich

If Zooey had tried to wear this it would have looked twee beyond belief, but Gyllenhaal is making it work. Agree that her makeup could have been stronger, but I like her hair for some odd reason. It suits her. She’s strange and it’s strange. And I REALLY liked her weird multi ’70s Met Ball dress – I think because it looked like something her terrific character in Stranger Than Fiction would have worn (as does this outfit).

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Zooey would have worn opaque black tights and wound up looking like a retro-futuristic scientist or some such. ETA: “GET BENT, TAX MAN!”

    • elemspbee

awful. from head to toe; black tights unite this whole look smells like zoey d.

    • MannahattaMamma

Wait. I don’t get it. Sheer black hose & shoes with all that white? I’m totally confused b/c I love the jacket & think the rest of it looks like she was getting dressed for one thing w/shoes & hose, then changed her mind with skirt & jacket, but never went back to fix her legs. Luckily I am never going to be a lady-star, though, so I won’t ever have to solve such conundrums.

    • Clash D

She looks amazing! I love this on her!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Picky, picky, picky.
      She looks very nice!

    • jenuwefa

Looks like she finally caved and hired a stylist….

    • Kelly

I hate black hose with white clothes.

    • mila_8

      Uh, no.
