Laverne Cox at the Time 100 Gala

Posted on May 01, 2014

There appears to be a whole lot of bland in the celeb-fashion pipeline for today, so we best get y’all on your feet and ready to face the day with a cuppa fierce.

That’s a butt to be proud of. She needs to take a page or two from J Lo, Kim K, and Nicki Minaj and work that ass every chance she gets.

We like this look because it’s the most polished we’ve seen her yet. Having said that, brown seems like an odd color for spring. Then again, it also appears to be a bit of a trend this spring.  Personally, we think this would have been so much more dramatic in a silver or blue rather than a brown. Love the ring and the shoes. Her hair looks better, but we still don’t love how it aggressively frames her face. Show off your pretty face, girl! Pull some of that hair up or back. And it pains us to say this, but she needs some help on applying makeup for flash camera situations. The various areas of her face (mouth, cheeks, forehead) are all different colors.

She’s got a glorious butt. Agree that a different color (jewel tone blue or green to me) would have made this dress sing even more.

Makeup is tragic. Not only are the parts of her face all different colors, they all skew too obviously lighter than her neck and arms which is a no no. Someone call in Trinity K Bonet for her makeup skills stat!

Still shes hawt and i luv huh!!!

    • Jacob Bowen

TKB would make her face SING!

  • Valdri8

That is a strange titscrepency there

    • Jennifer Bober

I thought the same thing. Definitely not at the same heights.

  • gayle

This is not my favorite of her looks. The hip cutouts are a problem and her makeup needs redoing but I love her so to end on a positive note she truly has a figure to envy.

    • Yeah, I have to score this one as an OUT, or at least a near-miss, not that we were asked. I don’t think it particularly flatters her figure. I’m not a fan of the cut-out dress in general, but I don’t think the cut-outs are very well executed on this. I don’t see a designer’s name, so that makes me think she hasn’t quite risen to level of having big names give her dresses.

  • Fannie Wolston

great dress on her, shoes are disappointingly boring.

  • Mothra

I feel like the ring is made of the same material as the dress.

  • teensmom99

I think she’s finally getting free clothes. Yay!

  • My only quibble here is with the color of that illusion, its quite distractingly different from the rest of her. Otherwise? Slammin’!

    • Stella Zawistowski

YES. I wish it weren’t illusion at all, but rather a cutout at the neck and a different-colored fabric (that isn’t trying to be her skin tone and failing) for the rest.

      • Looking again at the design of the dress, it could have been done quite effectively without the illusion netting at all. No real structural reason for it.

  • Anna

Dat booty is slammin’. Not a fan of the sheer panels and the hair and makeup could use some work, but she gives me life nonetheless. Love the ring.

  • In_Stitches

I love the color. A dress this shiny with those cut-outs in a bolder color would have been garish in my opinion. It still is a bit, especially with that peep show situation running down the entirety of her thigh, but on the whole it’s a great look.

    • Kitten Mittons

I’m not in love with the color on her, but I agree about another bold or saturated color maybe taking the dress too far into Tacky Town. I’d just like a little more contrast in the look, so I could see a grey/silver, or a pale color working.

If someone handed me that dress, though, and my behind looked like that in it, I’d wear it, too.

    • Kayceed

I love the copper/bronze – it is one of my favorite colors for formal wear – much less expected than black, navy, silver, etc. – and she has the skin tone to carry it off. Love it.

  • Jessica Freeman

I loathe the cut outs. Body is slamming.

  • She’s wearing a wig, don’t you think? Look at her part, which is to straight and does not show true flesh underneath. So she should just get an updo wig.

  • xmixiex

that’s one of the ugliest dresses i’ve ever seen, possibly ever, in history. it’s a stripper gown.

    • boweryboy

Gurl, Google Stella McCartney and then let’s talk ugliest dresses ever.

      • marlie

Or something that Raf Simons has designed for Dior.

        • boweryboy

        • demidaemon

REALLY. This is so far off the ugly scale that it doesn’t even register.

      • KinoEye

Throw in some Peter Pilotto while you’re at it.

        • boweryboy

  • SuzyQuzey

She is really working it, but that dress with the swirly mesh cutouts looks straight from the bargain bin.

  • I love her, but I don’t love this. She looks MUCH better with a shorter ‘do (she’s gorgeous in OITNB Season 2 preview) and I’m sorry but this dress is uber-tacky.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I think the hair, makeup, dress, and accessories are all uber-tacky, but what I really don’t get is the “color” of the illusion netting on the cut-outs. It makes her appear to have random zombie-like patches of grey skin..not pretty, I say.

    • KinoEye

Agreed on the shorter hair. Did a gay gasp when I saw the previews — can’t wait for more OITNB!

  • NMMagpie

I actually like this, cutouts and all. That ring is some serious SASSY.

  • CB

Bod is to kill for, but the overall impression is a little tacky. Still LUV HUH!!

  • @Biting Panda

Lovely, but in need of refinement. I’m ready for her to have people of caliber. A grade A Team that can really help mainstream America fall in love with Ms. Cox.

(PS If anyone cares to hear the the tale, ask me in tomorrow night’s lounge about introducing the kids to their transgender family member and how it has lead to my daughter’s love of all things Laverne Cox.)

    • KinoEye

You best believe I’ll be asking. Awesome!

    • Noah

      Looking forward to that story!

    • marlie

I can’t wait to hear the story!

    • snarkykitten

Very interested to hear this story, as my spouse is a recently out transwoman.

      • @Biting Panda

It’s not The Grapes of Wrath or anything epic, but it’s a sweet story about how honest and open kids are and how life and people can often surprise you, even if you’ve known them for years. A feel good piece, if you will. I look forward to sharing it with my friends. This is no Mommy Blog, but the TLOunge is always a great place to gather and be real.

  • Lilithcat

Show off your pretty face, girl! Pull some of that hair up or back.

You sound just like my mother!

  • It’s hard to just get past the “Bambi” face! Everything needs to be relaxed, lightened up. This makeup is what one would expect from a Jersey Shore character. Color of dress is nice… The dress…no!

  • GillianHolroyd

    Inflatable doll.

  • MarissaLG

That makeup is a problem and I personally don’t like the choice of shoe. I think it would have been better with something in gold, and maybe something a bit more delicate.

  • yethica

Also: brown iridescent lip liner! Wtf. So bad.

  • Danielle

The hair’s a little wiggy, but she’s fucking Laverne Cox, so I’m giving her snaps.

  • KinoEye

Gorgeous, and another ass that just won’t quit. Agreed on the hair, though — I want to see more of that lovely face! I also wish there wasn’t quite so much lipliner. She’s one of those ladystars who truly doesn’t need it, like Angelina.

  • SugarSnap108

The glory of that ass is undeniable, but the makeup is sad. Her face deserves much better.

    • flamingoNW

  • MissFern

DAMN girl. That is all I have to say about that.

  • boweryboy

My only quibble is the Tina Turner Wig Collection hair. Otherwise, girlfriend is representing.

  • jilly_d

That makeup is seriously FUBAR. I don’t love the color of the gown, nor do I like the shoe pairing. Sorry Laverne u know I love U girl. Take the ring and start over.

  • julnyes

That makeup job is a serious ISSUE, it is veering into Wendy Williams territory and that is unacceptable. I hate the color and style of the dress, though it does showcase one of her spectacular physical ASSets.

  • The butt makes my heart sing, but the babyheads make it weep.

  • MoHub

Can we please ban illusion netting NOW?

    • Gatto Nero

Yes. The silhouette is great on her, though, and a deeper neckline would work better then the netting inserts.

  • formerlyAnon

Every woman in these posts should have their gowns so well-fitted.

    • demidaemon

That is one thing she cannot be read on. The fit is perfection.

  • marlie

I am of the opinion that brown girls should never wear brown dresses. Same principle as the paler ladystars not wearing the champagne/beige/light pink dresses that they always end up blending in to. There’s certainly more of a contrast here, but I still don’t like the color. Laverne’s makeup is also off – especially her lipstick. Overall, this is just OK, but she’s done better.

    • Wink

      Contrast, sweetie. Contrast!

  • Noah

I’m still raging that she’s not on the list.

  • Imasewsure

I’m not loving any of this (except that ass which is fab)

  • JP

    Brown is the new black?

    She looks amazing.

  • Kent Roby

I LOVE LOVE Lavergne, and will not deny her hotness, in spite of obvious quibbles here.
I’ve mentioned before that her fondness for fishnets is probably a holdover from her pre-transitioning drag days; I wonder if the same can be said about her makeup. I personally would love to see her go with a fresher face; I have no doubt whatsoever that she’s got a gorgeous face before touching it with a drop of makeup.

  • NeenaJ

HD powder is not your flash’s friend. Can’t we all learn from Ms. Kidman?

  • MilaXX

The butt looks great, but this dress should be in blue. Also she needs a better mua & either a side part or an updo.

  • No. It’s an awful dress topped by awful make-up crowned by awful hair.

  • demidaemon

I’m giving her an attagirl here. If this was in a different color that really showed off the contrast of her skin tone (think Lupita), it would be a near-WERQ. AS is, it’s good but with quibbles. The hair situation is better, but I’m starting to wonder if blond is not her color (I know she probably has to keep it for Sophia, but still). The make-up looks fine to me, but I am, by no means, an expert.

ETA: Okay, I see the make-up issues here. I have to hope that some highly qualified MUA out there is itching to get their hands on Miss Laverne, because, goddamn it, she deserves it.

  • lalahartma

NIce butt, but that dress and makeup don’t do it for me.

  • vickilu

My thoughts on photo #2: “Honey no, don’t pose like that.”
My thoughts on photo #5: “Oh. Yes, do that pose!”

  • Amanda Miller

Is it just me or does she look a bit like Rosario Dawson with this makeup? Odd.
She’s got a banging body, but I don’t know if this is the dress for it. Or the hair for it- when you’re curvy I think you need some volume in your hair to balance you out. It’s too flat 🙁

  • CarrieBaby

I love her but all of this is not working for her. Really wish she would invest in a better wig (or at least tug down on the back so it sits properly) 🙁

  • that’s the worst lip makeup i’ve seen outside of RPDR.

  • hellkell

There’s a serious titscrepancy going on, and that illusion netting isn’t helping.

  • johnny sudeste

message to her make-up artist: enough with the Kryolan products.

  • Kristy Sheldon

Rarely have I ever second guessed you guys for even a moment, but I like the choice of brown. Silver or blue might have hinted at costume or drag.
