Kristen Stewart for Chanel Pre-Fall 2014 Ad Campaign

Posted on May 05, 2014

Our first impulse was to laugh. “Annie Get Your Chanel! Hilarious!”

But honestly? These shots are kind of insanely fabulous and the cowgirl glam looks couldn’t have found a better model than Miss Butch Glam herself.

We suspect we’re going to hear some vigorous disagreement but yeah, this is pretty flipping fabulous to our eyes.

  • Lolo Andre

Fab as fuck. She is working those shots like nobody else considering how ugly the collection is

    • ellatheingenue

Thank you! She is totally workin it, but those clothes are yuck

    • mshesterp

I LOVE the one where she’s looking down to the side. Honey, you’re a MODEL. She’s even channeling a little Crystal Renn in some of these shots. I think it’s a personal best for her, model-wise.

      • ChiKat67

Aw, read your second sentence as if I was Samantha Jones.

    • Kent Roby

That last look would be great to wear for cleaning ceiling fans.

      • That’s my laugh out loud for the day! Thanks!

      • The Versatile Chef

      • andreawey

        swiffer sleeves!

    • PinkyAndNoBrain

Totally agree. Also . . . I kinda love that hair but I feel like I shouldn’t. Sorta how I responded to the photos themselves, actually . . .

  • Simone

I LOVE it! She looks amazing.

  • VioletFem

This editorial could not have been better designed without Kristen Stewart in mind. I love it.

  • ballerinawithagun

Wow! I love this! Are the cowboy boot looking thingies at the calves attached to the pants? Or are they cowboy boot spats? Genius!!!

    • alyce1213

Whatever they are, I love and covet them. Badly.

      • formerlyAnon

Maybe I’ve been warped by residence in the Lone Star State, but I hate those things. You are welcome to my pair, if Chanel sends me one as a promotional gesture 😉

I love cowboy boots despite the fact that they are a sad, tired cliche ( you haven’t cringed till you’ve seen a flotilla of sorority girls in their floaty sundresses (in school colors, natch) worn with cowboy boots – many of which cost a month’s not-cheap rent or more.).

        edited, for various.

        • alyce1213

It’s odd for me to have such a reaction because I don’t normally go for cowboy boots — I like them on the ranch, and that’s about it. But these are special, maybe because their not real-looking.
One of my bugaboos is cowboy boots with a wedding dress, worn no doubt by the sorority girls of whom you speak.

          • formerlyAnon

Your bugaboo is completely understandable. I tend to be tolerant of the “with a wedding dress” thing, since, you know, it’s their wedding and – no matter how wrong they are!! – we are operating under the optimistic assumption that this is their only wedding and they get to do whatever makes them feel like Queen of the Fucking May. Or, you know, as if they’re making a very emotional and important lifelong commitment in front of many of the people they love best in the world.

      • Judih1

ME TOO. And I normally detest cowboy boots unless worn on a ranch. But these are totally hot!

  • JauntyJohn

I am most definitely Not A Fan but these photos are dynamite.

    • StarburstLady

She’s beaten her personal record by giving a total of one and half different facial expressions in these pictures!

  • BitchyQueenAlert

    Butch my ass, bitchy queens

  • Kate

I love it! Would she look this fab as a Ralph Lauren model?

  • Ginmaru

Uncle Karl is crazy as hell but he is one fine photographer! Props to make up and hair as well. It took a village to make this campaign and it is glorious!

  • DTLAFamilies

I can’t stand the little hypocrite (or Chanel either) but I cannot deny she looks incredible here. And I can’t think of a better choice for this campaign.

  • alyce1213

Perfect confluence of product, photographer and model! I love all the styling — the braids, heavy makeup, clothes, selective color printing. This is a gorgeous, memorable campaign. (Also not a big KStew fan, but credit where due.)

  • dulcinea86

Awesome! I want to see her in a movie
in this character. It’s insane how much makeup her face can handle…I have bone structure envy.

    • ryenerman

Agreed. The used all the makeup on her face and she is still pulling it off. Ridiculous.

    • Daenyx

For KStew being good in a movie, watch The Runaways. Do not, under any circumstances, watch Snow White & the Huntsman.

  • Danielle

It pains me to admit that sometimes she can give good face.

  • I kind of love the fourth and fifth shots, but I adore anything to do with the American Old West and rocked my own version of butch glam for most of my late teens/early twenties. At the very least, it’s an interesting tack.

  • elicarme

Stewart was Nicolas Ghesquière’s muse and Nicolas Ghesquière is a Genius. Now,Karl Lagerfeld. there’s nothing more to say. I think she is a Diva in a way that only an anti-diva can be.

  • YoungSally

God! I thought that first photo was Madge trying to be hip again.

  • LeelaST

The first three are fab, the last three are very self-aware.

    • BarniClaw

Agreed! And she’s making pretty close to the same face in each of those final three.

  • SAA

I like shot # 2. But 4, 5 & 6 look like they literally photoshopped her face on to each pic. No change in expression/look at all. Hell, take the toothpic out of shot 3 and it’s again the same face… C’mon.

    • BarniClaw

Hmmm…good eye. Maybe remove the bandana and it’s the same face, too?

    • holla

have you seen all shots of other magazine she’s done? She has only one expression for photoshoots. I don’t know why she keeps getting these calls to do fashion shoots. I suppose the first 3 pics are worth a thousand of the last 3?

  • homespunner

Vigorously disagreeing. I scrolled down, back up, back down, back up, back down. Nope. All I see are Kristen’s dead eyes.

    • holla

#2 isn’t so bad since she’s not looking at the camera, and #1 is not so bad since her mouth is covered. but yes, I think she can only have dead eyes look no matter what, even in movies. why is she even still popular? Twilight and her thing with RPatz has been done for so long.

  • Baghag

Coco is spinning in her grave. SPINNING.

    • Kent Roby

She ain’t dancing a hoe down, that’s for damn sure!

  • lundibleu

Fabulous photos and styling, but GOOD LORD those clothes are hideous.

    • Lori

Exactly. She’s working this as well as anyone possibly could, but these clothes are idiotic. I’m not sure what The Kaiser is on, but whatever it is he either needs a lot more or a lot less because the current level is not working.

      • lundibleu

I think he needs sacked, I don’t like what he’s doing with Chanel. As Baghag says, Coco must be spinning in her grave.

      • Madam Von Sassypants

I dunno, there are a LOT of rich, western/cowboy aficionados out there. I think it’s clever market targeting. While I’d never wear most of this (ha! if I could afford it), I think it’s fantastic in its Americana gaudiness.

        • Lori

I agree that there are a lot of rich, western/cowboy aficionados, I’m just not generally a fan of their style choices. IME money + cowboy tends to equal country music award show realness, aka So Freakin’ Tacky, WTH? Visiting my family in Texas was an adventure in avoiding spontaneous eye bleeding and when I lived in LA I saw some shit. In WeHo it was mostly fun, other places not so much.

That’s certainly a personal taste thing and I do think there are a couple pieces here that could work if styled very differently. In general though its gaudiness just isn’t my favorite thing to celebrate about my country.

    • Aurora Leigh

      Yes. Mega-hiddy.

  • Scimommy

    No arguments here. It works.

  • TigerLaverada

Always with the dead eyes, this girl.

    • lundibleu

In this case, I can forgive her. She has to numb herself to what Uncle Karl is making her wear.

  • @Biting Panda

I’m sitting traffic i.e. I’m cranky as fuck. And I still like it. It fits my mood.

  • Janet B

    Love the photos.

  • Any dark hearted girl would love this. It’s when stylists try to make her into Glinda the Good Witch does it make everyone miserable.

    • formerlyAnon

    • myandyleigh

It’s not just her dark heart that makes it all work. These garments, the make-up, the hair, it all embraces her tomboy personality and hard edge. That boyish quality is seductive on her because it’s really who she is, whereas the Glinda the Good Witch attempts impose a delicate flower/demur little girl veil that is a total lie that she knows better than anyone. She always looks miserable and guilty as fuck whenever she’s all Glendified, like she’s telling us an outrageous lie and everyone knows it, especially her.

      • holla

        I think for her it’s “Bella-fied”

  • crash1212

That last picture with the furry arms is everything.

  • Dan_In_NYC

This is the most “Capital F” Fashion editorial I have seen in a while. I don’t think I care for any of the individual pieces, but as a photo set, i’m very digging this. Girl can definitely give face.

  • joything

Effing hilarious. Cowgirl glam has been a long time coming; it hadtot be more than metallic fringe and an ocean of sequins and bugle beads. Chanel nails it.

  • Trickytrisha

    Same old dead eyes.

  • Vegas Girl

I am SO over the photo-shopping of the face to the point that it looks completely computer generated. This girl is like 20 years old & 2% body fat! What could they possibly have needed to change about her face to make it look that not real?

  • Butch glam indeed! Wowzers in me trousers.

  • Julie Chase

Completely fun. She has GREAT cheekbones, damn.

  • 25or6to4

I’m not exactly sure what’s happening here, but I like it.

  • ashtangajunkie

She is gorgeous and I am loving this ad campaign.

  • Claudia Berry

Well, she has the one constipated expression and it looks good here.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I’ve always thought she made a better model than actress. She is GORGEOUS and this shoot is awesome.

  • Tara Gray Burkholder

It’d be a lot better if she had more than one face. She’s like Zoolander & blue steel.

  • Love it

  • demidaemon

I’m actually pretty impressed. Now, if she could only translate this type of attitude and styling to the RC…

  • SusiePamudji

Couldn’t agree more. She’s the perfect girl for this campaign.

  • formerlyAnon

This is a spread that called for bitch face, and she brought it. I like. Not that I can tell if I’d like the garments if these overdone, piled upon stacked assemblages were deconstructed. I CAN say that the image projected here can be achieved less ambiguously and at a lower price point than Chanel, but whatevs. I like both her and the jacket in photo #3 best of all.

Also, call me contaminated by pickup driving, shit kicking redneck culture, but those weird amalgamation boots made up of pilgrim shoes, pony skin knee socks and weirdness are pure shit compared to a pair of decent cowboy boots.

    • Lori

You are not wrong about the boots.

    • FibonacciSequins

I’m a lifelong Northerner and I feel the same way. The classic cowboy boot can’t be improved on.

    • KinoEye

I’m right there with you on the boots. There are many, many designs of cowboy boot, all of which would have worked better than that wonky combo.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love it- she’s giving me Alicia Keys realness (*knowing side eye** inserted here) with that sitting on the floor in cornrows look.

  • icm

Evel Kneivel came to mind when I looked at the first photo.

  • Kathleen

The best she’s looked in ages.

  • Jennifer Bober

I have to say, the second shot where she’s not looking at the camera is my favorite, because as someone else said, her eyes are just dead flat. Aside from that, these are pretty amazing.

  • Mary Lauer

I don’t actually care about the clothes but she looks larger than her pouty self, so GO!

  • understateddiva

You can’t say Karl doesn’t have a point of view! This has made me want a giant fluffy skirt, which means advertising at its best!

  • LadyVimes

I like it because it’s different. It’s not the standard Pouting With Purse.

  • Malia C.

Makes me long for the days of Ines de la Fressange.

  • Amel

Second and last photos are straight up fierce. But the hair is a little weird

  • Mrs. O

She doesn’t waste any energy trying to look like a good girl, does she? I say “rock on, Badass. You’re only young once and then you are old forever.”

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

it makes me go “yeah, yeah i could wear that…” even though, “no.”

    • joything

That’s the magic of attitude, isn’t it? And it’s lightning in a bottle. Model + garment + photog + editor = I believe with all my soul that I must own and wear what I cannot possibly.

  • MilaXX

I like the first 3 pictures, kinda of meh about the next 2 and hate the last shot. all I see is a bald eagle.

    • Kitten Mittons

Yeah, I was thinking America Chic-ken as the theme.

  • FibonacciSequins

I’m down with it, except those boots. Agree that Kristen was a good choice to model this collection. She has her own thing going on, like it or not, and I appreciate that.

  • sk8tfan

Mere mortals could not pull off those ass clothes. She looks fab.

  • fursa_saida

That one with the fringed jacket is HOT.

  • dalovelee

Only models who hang out with other models would wear this…who walks around with a bitch face all day and night?

  • Jacob Bowen

Pictures 1, 3, & 4 are FUCKING FANTASTIC. When I saw your Tweet I DIED at that FRINGE on the first picture, but wow, I actually love it. The clothes may not be perfection, but on her they SING!

  • Jean Genetic

Huh, never pegged her for a fervent Second Amendment supporter!

A personal best for her, amazingly perfect. With hideous clothes…….

  • Qitkat

It’s fascinating, but leaves me speechless. Except, well, the last three look like they shopped the same headshot on all of ’em.

  • frannyprof

    Guys? No.

  • boweryboy

She bugs, but yeah these are fabulous.

  • Man Dala

I like the concept behind the photoshoot but her face looks to severe in most of the shots. The last photo is stunning though,

  • Susan Velazquez

    she looks stunning.

  • I am hung up on imagining the meeting between Karl Lagerfeld and Kristen Stewart. Everything about it boggles the mind. The visuals. The audio. The decor. What language did they use?

    • joything

This line of imagination is even better than the editorial.

  • kategs

I really want those socks. that’s a stitch of an idea. although on closer look I am not sure they are socks? I like the idea of tucking them into brogues.

  • Judih1

One of the best celebrity fashion spreads I have seen in a while. BRAVO

  • Nicole Walraven

all my want. i just love everything i see from chanel lately. that star dress…

  • Alloy Jane

“He was my first boyfriend. Scarred him. Scarred him for life!” That is all I can think of, thanks to that last photo.

It’s definitely Fashion but damn, most of those clothes are ugly.

    • BayTampaBay

I agree! Love the pictures but hate the clothes.

I cannot believed that I just typed that I hated something Chanel.

  • malarson2

I get how it called/longed for/necessitated a model with bitch face. But the thing is: that’s her natural face. If they’d got someone in there who didn’t always already have that face (I just happened to watch Twilight New Moon on Saturday night and, trust me, she ALWAYS has that face), and then they got in there and pulled it off, it would be a celebration. But they essentially asked her to just wear her normal expression and to never change it at all and then she did just that. I can’t find the pride or fierceness in that. It would be like if Chanel busted in and asked me if they could take my picture for a campaign but only if I constantly wore a bemused-yet-tired and often cracking up expression while sitting on the couch and talking to my kids about life, school, and tv. I’d look directly into the camera and say, ‘Well, that’s just money in the bank, Chanel, and a solid up-tick to my cool factor. Let’s get right to it’. Ms. Stewart might even be stealing those very lines in these shots.

  • French_Swede

I have always liked Kristen Stewart. She looks great, and I read an interview with her where she said she really enjoyed the fashion shoot and felt more comfortable and “herself” than she can remember.

  • Fräulein K.

Fabulous! Also, ridiculous. Good thing the sale of these clothes is not what keeps Chanel afloat – most of this is FMO if ever I saw it.

  • Alexis Wenceslao

  • numenah

Ratchet cowboy. And I’m still waiting to see what this kid has to offer besides attitude.

  • Raspberry2012

Much better! I still have my issues with how they keep forcing her to be a model when the girl is clearly not into it, but this is great – this is MUCH more her speed!

  • Well I don’t actually like any of the clothes, but damn, the pictures look great! Absolutely perfect for her. Her bitchy resting face has found its perfect home.

  • shelley514

Yep, finding this pretty fabulous. Love the last shot and want to go somewhere in that outfit!!!!!

  • Jessica Freeman

Girl should have just been a model since her acting leaves much to be desired. Killing it.

  • histrogeek

And still no one can convince the girl to close her mouth. She must eat flies or something.

  • Nancer

Not a huge fan of KStew, but I agree with our uncles. This is the right girl for this ad campaign. I might even throw out a “Fierce” or two!

  • Eddie Verdonk

In spite of the fact that she’s giving practically the same face in every frame – yes, she looks fabulous.

  • semirose

I adore that second pic where she’s looking away but wow those last 3 it’s like her face is frozen and they just rearranged around it. Still all kinds of fab going on here.

  • MartyBellerMask

Um, the clothes are dumb, so I guess it works?

  • ChiKat67

Normally I am not a fan of KStew but she is working it here.

  • AvaLehra

I forget sometimes how very pretty because all I can see is her phooey face that she loves making. This is perfect for her and she looks terrific!

  • Bernadette

That 3rd shot, total “fuck this noise” chic!

  • Joanna

They are absolutely fabulous. The best she’s ever, ever done.

  • MaggieMae

I call a mismatch. Chanel? Nope.

  • J. Preposterice

wow, someone figured out what the hell to do with K. Stew’s looks and public persona!

    • Shawn EH

I don’t know … could it be … is she actually …. having fun?

  • Imasewsure

I dig me some KStew anyway but these are fabulous. Don’t love the fourth one (which reminds us all that she isn’t in fact a model) but overall these are damn fine part’ner

  • Daenyx

I dislike Chanel and I HATE this collection, but she does, in fact, look fucking fabulous.

  • KinoEye

Wow. I think perhaps she should consider switching to modeling — who knew she could give such FACE? That said, the third photo is hysterical and I can’t stop laughing at it. It reminds me that picture that pops up on memes all the time — a mostly naked, hairy guy posing provocatively on his bed with his guns and guitars. Google image search “guy with gun on bed” and you’ll see what I mean.

  • AthenaJ

What in the hell happened to Chanel? Did Uncle Karl had some sort of a psychotic break while visiting Texas?? I need answers, people.
The only thing that saves this spread is Kristen giving good face. Unfortunately it appears she only had one expression on that face to give.

  • eruannalle

no disagreement here – love this (and love her, at that. girl gets such a bad rap for totally nonsense reasons. she’s great.) the clothes themselves are kind of ridiculous but i’m kind of blinded to that fact by how fantastic everything else going on in these shots is.

  • Jecca2244

I feel like Chanel is so often like the Emperor’s Clothes. No one wants to tell the Emperor he is naked and no one wants to say Chanel is often ugly and unwearable.

  • Mia Moreno

    Gorgeous! Insanely beautiful.

  • Levedi

Oh dear Lord. This means all my little fashionista students will be wearing this in class come fall. I may end up pointing and laughing at them.

  • Super_Red

The clothes are CRAZY, completely unwearable, and, to my eyes, rather ugly. Miss KStew has a single expression. AND YET these shots are amazing. THe editorial is all-around fabulous. Well done to the ad team.

  • JynxTheCat

Kristen Steward is my new boyfriend
