  • @Biting Panda

    Pretty. But fungal.

    • Ms. Schmidt

Delete this, “. But” and you’re right on.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

It’s muddy but I’m feeling it. I think this is the first time I’ve liked her hair that color (no comment on the style).

      • BellaLuv

I was just thinking the same thing about her hair!

      • Kent Roby

It’s not as contrasting with the ombre as it has been, so it has less of that need-to-get-the-roots-touched-up look.

      • Louise Bryan

        What style?

        • demidaemon

    • VicD

Sea Witch goes to the Met Ball.

    • Angela

Kate could never resist a fungi.

  • Ginger

You’re wearing Valentino Couture at the Met Gala and you couldn’t get your hair properly done?

I’m no Valentino fangirl, but that dress is beautiful.

    • Scimommy

What you said. The dress is gorgeous but the hair is seriously ruining the look.

    • PlethoraofBooks

Thank you for stating that about her hair!!!

The dress… it wanes and waxes on how much I like it, but it is a beautiful piece of art.

    • Lolo Andre

Seriously I’m gonna keep looking at it while covering her head

    • bitchybitchybitchy

That color isn’t an easy one to wear, but it is working for Kate. The craftsmanship in the dress is really exquisite. I wish that she’d seen fit to have her hair styled to do justice that dress.

    • sojourneryouth

The hair and the ATTITUDE! How are you acting like you would literally rather be anywhere else? Can I give the dress to a celeb that can werq it better?

      • makeityourself

Yeah. She so needs to get over herself.

    • Anne

That’s how I feel too. That dress needs an updo and lipstick.

      • Anna

The dress is lovely, and so it Kate – but her face just blends into the dress.

  • WendyD

Beach hair at the Met Gala. Does not compute!

    • Trent

Just wait till TLo puts up a Katie Holmes post. Both she and Kate need to fire their hair people.

      • decormaven

Truth. That was not a good look for KH.

      • MilaXX

Hair was the least of Katie Holmes problems last night. She better be glad Sandra Lee was there to make her look good.

        • decormaven

Sandra Lee’s look was scary for sure.

        • Trent

LOL! Sandra was just bizarre, but Katie’s deflated Scarlett O’Hara/Disney Princess Belle drag was a complete fail. Hope TLo puts them both up…

  • thecitysleeps

Is this a recreation of Eve’s foliage? Not working to be honest. And what’s with the hair?

    • Rhonda Shore

Lupita and SJP both look 1000x better than this.

      • thecitysleeps

Worse than Lupita is pushing it though.

        • Rhonda Shore

nope. Lupita bothered to do her hair…and i liked the movement of her dress.

  • SewingSiren

Couldn’t be bothered to do her hair.

    • zuzu

Considering how fried it is, I wonder if she was afraid of it breaking off if she did anything to it.

And once again, I say: I sure hope that’s for a role.

      • Qitkat

Doesn’t matter. A few bobbie pins, well placed, some gentle hair product. Presto, a simple chignon.

        • But only a few, not the aggressive latticework of bobby pins she wore a while ago!

    • Sarah

This plague of stringy loose waves is killing me. I don’t care what’s trendy for casual wear, but if you’re in a gown, your hair had better be frikkin’ impeccable. DAMMIT.

      • demidaemon

It’s the fucking Met Ball, for Christ’s sake. DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR DAMN HAIR!. *shakes fist*

    • Qitkat

No matter how we feel about any of the dresses, this event is one of the Grand Events of the entire year. It is THE place to come, and be seen, and to put out all the efforts, which does include having one’s hair done. I can’t believe the stylists didn’t insist upon it. This pulls any dress down to pedestrian levels. Even though I didn’t care for SJP’s hair, she has the fashion sensibility to know when it is appropriate to Bring It On.

      • demidaemon

Exactly. She put the effort in. This is just unassed.

  • jw_ny

This was one of my favorite dresses, perusing through pics of the event. She kind of lacks presence though, and that sameo sameo hair…ugh.

    • littlemac8

I hate her as a “blonde.” I use that word loosely because this color does not occur in nature. It’s so unbecoming I can never get past it.

  • Mrs. Julien

    It looks itchy.

    • alyce1213

You beat me to it by seconds!

    • mshesterp

And hot. I mean, temperature-wise. I don’t want a dress that looks like it’s growing on me.

      • alyce1213

        As @BitingPanda said – fungal.

  • alyce1213

It’s making me itchy and in spite of the beautiful work, the color is depressing. I don’t understand her hair.

    • Anna

I think Jeff Spicoli whenever I see her hair.

    • Qitkat

The first thing I thought was that it makes me feel creepy.

    • KES4K

It looks like a once-grand dress that is rotting away. Perhaps that was the intended effect, but…?

      • Mrs. Julien

Maybe Miss Havisham got lost in a bog at some point.

        • Qitkat

Again, a reminder not to drink and BKTLO.

    • Introspective

yes!! the sheer parts truly look like sandpaper. that plus the fungus action was really pulling down my mood. first thought when i saw this was: i has a sad.

  • GillianHolroyd

I like this a lot, love the color and the beachy hair works for me, not sure why though.

  • lexilexi

I don’t like the seams running down her arms. Is there no other way?

  • Julie Chase

    Gorgeous dress, terrible hair.

  • Andrew Schroeder

  • Pennymac

Did she dash over after her swim meet?

  • hughman

“My Mom says I look “pretty” but whatevs. Hey, you wanna go out behind the Temple of Dundur and have a cigarette? This mesh is depressing and reminds me of how dolphins are killed in tuna catches.”

    • bitchybitchybitchy

You have so put a truly bitchy smile on my face with this comment!

  • DagnyReardon

She’s on her way to Fern Gully

  • Danielle

Beautiful dress, but I’m over the shaggy sheepdog hair she loves so much.

  • Sofia

this is the best i’ve ever seen her look. goregous and interesting dress, flattering makeup that does not clash with the overall effect of the dress, and she wisely sports loose hair so as to not look severe. that hair is perfectly coiffed, imo. the dress is floral and fauna for spring, and she is quite statuesque. not something i ever thought i’d say about her. for me, this is a werq

    • demidaemon

I am giving you side-eye about your hair comments because I do not see what you see. AT ALL.

  • Kate

Why did “Game of Thrones” flash into my brain when I saw these pics?

  • smayer

The netting competes with the appliques on the gown. If the netting were less textured, it would be fabulous.

  • Janet B

SJP over-did the styling, Kate Mara under-did it.

  • decormaven

It needs a belt or some type of punctuation at the waist. The dress falls differently on Kate than on the model; a belt might be a nice addition here.

  • MilaXX

Please let that hair be for a role because her chestnut hair would have looked lovely with this dress. I don’t dislike it, but everything from the neck up is the same color.

  • Why is her hair always so awful?

Also, this does not look like a dress for a spring gala. I’m just sayin’.

    • StillGary

I don’t know why she bleached it to begin with, it makes her look so generic.

  • boweryboy

This could have been awesome with better make-up and hair.

  • Nicholas

Poison Ivy on the red carpet.

    (Not in a bad way.)

    • demidaemon

If only she had the Pamela red hair, and had flat-ironed it, at the very least….

Imagining it in my head and wishing to go back in time to tell her stylists.

  • Mothra

I am not sure I am lichen this very much. Also: Hairbrush?

    • Kitten Mittons

I do, but the hair kills it. Why does she have to be like everyone else with the messy hair thing? Dare to be different, y’know? Break out of your mold.

      • Mothra

        Nice mold joke. +1

        • Kitten Mittons

          • demidaemon

            Fun, guys!

  • MoHub

I’m not rich, and even I can afford a good conditioner.

  • guyfromhoboken

SO not a fan of the hair or the dress. The dress and the webbing on the arms / neck looks like something that is used to disguise hidden warheads during the war.

    • decormaven

Ooh, good call. Like the documentary Ghost Army.

  • CanIbeFrank

Wait. Does it have an attached cape??

    • jw_ny

yes…which is one of my favorite things about it. Reminiscent of medieval times.

      • Qitkat

The model is bringing the medieval. I wish Kate had emulated that. Because while it is a weird dress, the cape suits it very well.

  • KT

    An ode to potpourri.

  • This looks like something out of the Game of Thrones wardrobe trailer.

  • Judy_J

I am not a fan of the messy, dirty hair look.

  • BlairBear

she didn’t commit and wear the flowers in her hair. also burlap should not be found in couture

  • FibonacciSequins

It’s beautiful. Hair styled like the model’s would have gone better with the medieval vibe, not beach style.

  • This might be my favorite look of the event. Just gorgeous.

  • Kate Mara always stands out, she’s got a very unique charisma. Intensity without the coldness her sister can put off. She looks striking here, fantastical and sexy. The hair could be more polished, and I unfairly feel that that much sideboob would bother me on someone else. I never mind the dresses others find “fungal.”

    • Qitkat

She’s got a very pretty face, a bit unique looking, but I think that she seems so tentative here. If you want to commit to an unusual gown, that is great, but without the self-assurance that a look like this demands, she looks a little bit lost and unsure and is channeling her inner feelings to the exterior. She is an actress, after all, and sometimes I think that some of them forget that when they have a big event to attend that is all about how you present yourself. If she were more polished, maybe that would help her self-confidence? The lack of that and the careless hair are bringing the look down more than the fungal qualities of the dress. It could have been sold as quite beautiful.

      • Interesting, I don’t read her as tentative at all. She’s never been a vampy poser, and I don’t feel that the dress is swallowing her whole or anything.

        • Qitkat

I wouldn’t want to see her in a vampy pose, which wouldn’t suit her at all. She may be a shy person, and I’m the last to find fault with that quality; I don’t think the dress is swallowing her, how did you get that from my comment? It’s not easy to read body language from a few still photographs, but it looks to me as if she is lacking self-confidence, in reality, that may not be true.

          • “Lost”, “unsure” and “could have been sold as quite beautiful” gave me the impression you thought she might be overwhelmed by the garment/venue. Body language-wise, that’s her default pose everywhere.

          • Qitkat

I see what you mean. Interesting, that this is her default pose. Which kind of supports my “shy” theory. Maybe she is overwhelmed by the attention at any venue. I’m just guessing here, clearly.

    • Susan Velazquez

I completely missed the fact that she and Rooney are related. How did I not see that?

    • Imasewsure

Agreed about Kate although the Ice Princess vibe of her little sis is one of the reasons I absolutely love that little Audreybot

      • I love the alien queen realness Rooney can serve.

  • dschubba

    Botticelli gown.

  • Jessica Freeman

I love and hate this equally.

  • Mary Lauer

She looks like she used the same stylist as Darby Stanchfield for the WHCA Dinner. 😎

  • BrianaJC

heavy, hideous, heinous coloring. but, somehow, I don’t hate it? I think it fits her better than it deserves to.

  • Imasewsure

I actually like the hair with this because it makes it look more modern. The blond highlights (which I usually hate) lighten up the darkness of the dress as well. And I really love the dress, lichen color and all

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I’m trying to imagine this without the fishnet type netting on the yolk and arms, and I think I would like it better.

    • Imasewsure

You know what… that’s one of the things I like about this dress because they didn’t default to annoying illusion netting… they went full on with “real” netting and that earns some fashion props from me anyway…

      • Qitkat

The real netting is attention-grabbing in a way that illusion never is. It seems like it’s tricky to pull off well, both from a design standpoint and the wearer’s attitude.

  • anyalama

I like this a lot, but I want to hike up the bodice a bit, especially on the model.

  • ashtangajunkie

I would love this if her hair wasn’t telling me that she had to run to the Met Gala immediately after working a double shift with a hairnet on.

  • B_C_J

The proportions, fit & flow of the dress are great. I take issue with the color
& the “I just shook my head & walked out the door” hairdo. A gown this grand in scale demands a more sophisticated hairdo.

  • Dany

    Dear Tom & Lorenzo,

PLEASE put up Karolina Kurkova or Karlie Kloss. Both completely took my breath away, especially Karolina. Her look was awe-inspiring

    Bitter Kitten Dany

  • Sara McMurray

I just don’t understand why she always looks so pleased with herself.

  • The detail is so pretty but the whole is underwhelming. I’d actually appreciate some illusion netting, because those sleeves look itchy.

  • Miss wks

    Old lady dress…

  • Nancer

So much potential here. But the hair, the make-up; underwhelming. The hair is a real illustration in not giving a –ck. I also question if this is the best color for her; it’s tricky.

  • Linderella

Love everything about it. Debating the hair, but neck down, this is perfection.

  • librarygrrl64

That is a stunning dress, although it’s a full-on Monet because I like it better far away than close up. I think her hair needed to be a tad more formal.

  • flamingoNW

    That’s pretty epic. LOVE.

  • Constant Reader

I really like the dress — weird color, cape, and all — but can we talk about the ring? Because I think I really need it.

  • GeoDiva

Quick…. Call the CDC. We have an infection!

  • LeelaST

Up close the detail & glittery elements are beautiful but from far away this looks ratty and like camouflage.

  • KayEmWhy

Is it me or is this the Ugly Dress Gala?

  • marlie

This is rather gorgeous. I’m so glad her hair isn’t that weird ombre color anymore. And I still loathe the skin-colored lipstick.* But overall, the dress is interesting, and totally fits the bill for the gala.

*Random: I saw an add for a “buff” line of makeup, which is essentially a bunch of shades of skin color, and I almost lost my shit.

  • Betsy

  • TigerLaverada

Like the dress, but the beach hair looks stupid and out of place with it. And, please, enough with the no-lips lipstick.

  • clatie

this is the dress equivalent of the sad trombone noise.

  • Carla_Charlton

The hair is terrible, especially the color.

    • MarinaCat

      She Rachel McAdamed herself.

  • DominoEstella

No, this doesn’t fit and it looks itchy.

  • Perigee

Bride of Swamp Thing. I really like it.

  • Jacob Bowen

The dress without the sheer illusion netting would have been AMAZING, but with it I’m giving a thumbs down.

  • Susan Carson

fab dress, fits beautifully. the details are wonderful. Hair is a bit brassy though. (Sorry Kate,)

  • quiltrx

I like the skirt portion, but cannot get on board with hairnet sleeves and neckline.

  • mitch45

honesty, I cant look past her hair. I never liked how blonde hair looks on her 🙁

  • Baghag

    FAB!! Love it!!!

  • frannyprof

    This chick bugs.

  • Call me Bee

    Fabulous dress. Ugly hair.

  • butterflysunita

Looks great on the model. Awful on Kate. That surfer girl hair is horrible and ruins the whole look.

  • That dress is scrumptious. Mara looks like she drank a cup of NyQuil. Combined together, you get a big no.

  • wontons

Dunno if that’s her color. It looks better on the model, palette-wise.

  • trisker

The dress is lovely, but I think it overwhelms her beauty. Maybe if she had put on more face and done her hair, but still, she’s delicate and the dress is decidedly not. Florence Welch, maybe?

  • Dagney

    and again, hair. what the…?

  • Liz

Not loving the color but best I’ve seen her look as a blonde.

  • LadyVimes

I like this dress, but I wish the bust triangle was slightly higher. Excellent texture though.

  • Haley Buchanan

I think it’s beautiful. The earthiness of both the color and the textile seem to work for Miss Kate, who is definitely the yin to her sister’s sci-fi yang. That blonde ombre doesn’t belong on anyone’s head, however.

  • I feel like her hair is clashing with the dress.

One haircolor, darling. Make a decision. This looks less ombre and more “I changed my mind halfway through foiling.”

  • jif

    Antique upholstery.

  • Judih1

Meh I think with the right styling (starting with her hair) this could be pretty and ethereal. Instead it looks sad and droppy,

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

I absolutely love her look, from the fabulous dress that she wears so well, to her golden hair and makeup. She’s interesting, and looks pretty great here.

  • livesarah

  • Vtg Fashion Library

I keep expecting to see a raccoon climb out of her somewhere.

  • kategs

    I love this on her…

  • MartyBellerMask

    Mesh-covered sideboob is still sideboob.

  • Jennifer McGuire

AMAZING dress – unfortunately it seems to be wearing her, not the other way around. Agree the hair is tragic.

  • poorellensmith

A little bit of lip color wouldn’t have killed her. She looks washed out, especially with the blonde hair…

  • Pablo

This is serious cas of “girl, that’s not your hair OR your dress”.

  • Melanie

whatever is happening with the boob area is just wrong.

  • E. D.

I like it, but that’s not a green a lot of people can pull off, including her.

  • oohsparkley!

    Love it! Hair included.

  • demidaemon

If she had done something with her hair, I could have loved this. But the fried, unstyled (to my eyes) hair kills any chance of awesomeness.

  • Ginmaru

I didn’t know the Duck Dynasty people had a clothing line.

  • formerlyAnon

Lovely shape. Dreadful color(s) on her. She looks tarnished. And the hair looks more like the end of a looong day than “just stepped onto the red carpet.”

  • ktr33

I kinda love the dress, but since it’s somehow a little goth, she should’ve done something severe with her hair and probably a strong red lip.

  • JynxTheCat

Love it. I think this is the best Ive ever seen her. Not entirely sold on the blonde but with the dress its nice.

  • C W

Gorgeous! And her hair and accessories were awesome. I would not have thought she could handle that much dress.
