Jessica Chastain Style Triple Shot: Cannes Edition

Posted on May 20, 2014

The fashion parade-masquerading-as-a-film-festival known as Cannes continues, darlings. It’s Miss Jessica’s turn to be put through the judging wringer. First up: something awful.

Okay, we pretty much dislike everything about this look. The color is way too bridal party for our tastes and the shape is pretty terrible, making her look more hippy than she is and giving her droopy uni-boob. We’re not sure how this one was allowed to leave the house. Were there no mirrors involved?

Love. Pretty much perfect. The shoes make a lovely punctuation point for the outfit. We’re thinking she’s much better doing dressy-casual looks than she is doing formal ones, because…

We’re back to bleh. It’s a gorgeous color on her, and it’s way better than the previous gown, but we really don’t like that neckline at all and the overall effect is a little too goddess-gown for our tastes. It’s not awful. It’s just not our favorite kind of like. Gets the job done, we suppose.

  • PastryGoddess

That blue is tremendous on her

  • Julie Chase

I personally like the color of the first dress and it’s super glamorous and dramatic from the back. I just wish the front lived up to the rest of it.

I want to build a shrine to her hair. Oh Pantene Jesus, please bless me with flowing tresses!

    • TrixieConQueso

We go to the same church! I kept praying for the tresses, alas, I had to settle for extensions for Fancy Times.

    • FibonacciSequins

She needed some support under the first dress.

      • barbarienne

And a better fit. Even if she were supported, there’s something wrong in the proportions and placement. Which is a shame, because the idea of a flowing purple goddess dress is kind of awesome. But it has to be constructed/fit perfectly to work.

        • 3boysful

          And a less cheap-looking dress. 🙂

    • padma sallah

I think the first one looks dramatic because the wind was blowing it to great effect. Imagine if there was no wind. The fabric would be puddling at her feet she would be completely overwhelmed by the dress.

      • Julie Chase

She obviously summoned the wind to enhance her look-when it moves, it’s beautiful. From the back. That dress is no friend to the boobage.

    • Judy_S

I see the problems with the dress but I too like the color. A girl has to be a goddess sometimes, even with hips and droopy uniboob.

    • Bridget Smith

Her hair is glorious, and her face ain’t half bad either.

    • Carleenml

whenever I see her photo I weep…I had that color and then some in my younger days. Alas…youth is fleeting!

    • Constant Reader

      Pantene Jesus: BAND NAME!

    • Wasn’t there a song about that? “Pantene Jesus, Pantene Jesus, ridin’ on the dashboard of my car……”

  • ScarlettHarlot

2 out of 3 ain’t bad. That first one, though. No.

  • altalinda

Speaking of weddings (sort of) – at 2 pm we’ll find out whether Pennsylvania’s DOMA is going to be struck down. Fingers crossed!

    • They’re falling like dominoes! Oregon was just a few days ago…and Idaho the week before, right? Okay, Idaho hasn’t made it completely official yet, but there are rumblings.

    • Beardslee

It was overturned! I live in PA and I would have thought we’d be among the last states to do this. A great day.

      • altalinda

Congratulations, TLo, you’re now official in your home state, as are my honey and I!

      • Nope. Sadly, I bet my state, NC, will be the last. We are in the clutches of an idiot Repub governor, both houses of the legislature have Repub majorities, and every district in the state was gerrymandered beyond belief last year. But I love it that as the dominoes fall, backwards states like NC get more and more scorn and derision heaped upon them. Keep up the pressure! And congrats, TLo and other Pennsylvanians!

        • Sarah

Virginia ain’t jumping on the bandwagon, either. Not even a whiff of discussion. Sigh.

  • Glam Dixie

First look is incredibly unflattering. Love number 2 and 3 is such a gorgeous color on her it makes up for the kind of blah shape. I really want that McQueen dress in my closet.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Agree. That blue really makes her eyes pop.

  • Yaslind

I would prefer her eyebrows brushed UP

  • Golfkat

She looks INCREDIBLE in that last one! I like the other two too (mostly the short black one), but that royal blue off-the-shoulder gown is amazing!

  • mjude

    love #2 & the shoes.

    • jen_vasm

She looks much happier & at ease in #2. Her expressions in #1 & #3 are just pained.

  • NMMagpie

That first look is 1970’s perfume ad realness.

The second is awesome, especially the shoes.

The third, while being a kick butt color, is doing odd things to her boobs. Unfortunate.

    • kimmeister

I definitely saw torpedo boobs in the third.

    • mlle

The weird diagonal boob seam strikes again.

  • Imasewsure

2 fails and a home run on the second look. So cute and the other two awful and meh in that order.

  • Frank_821

I like the color on the first one. It doesn’t seem awful until you come to the side. I think the back is too complicated. The way the train is formed leads to to unflattering hip and sides. Chiffon gown should not look so laborious to handle

  • Jennifer Bober

I actually love that purple on her, but it’s my favorite color, so I’m a bit biased. I love the blue as well. As much as I think the more casual look is put together and the shoes are great with it, I’m not a fan of black with her coloring.

  • Little_Olive

Thank god for the second look. That Jessica Mc Clintock reject with prom shoes to match was haaaard to swallow. To think there is a tiny belt in there.

    • Anna

The matchy, tiny belt is EW! Didn’t even notice it at first.

    • what not

My thought exactly: Jessica McClintock does Grecian goddess…yuck. But the second is just lovely.

  • nannypoo

That first thing is really awful but I love the other two, especially the middle one. The shoes are perfect with it.

  • FibonacciSequins

    Love a dress with pockets!

That third dress looks like something from the Barbie collection.

    • ktr33

So with you on the pockets.

  • lexilexi

Is that really her in #2?
    Amazing how unlike-herself she looks.
    Center vs side part?
First one makes her look matronly, which she is not.

    • zuzu

That makeup really changes her face, doesn’t it?

      • jilly_d

Yes. I think it’s the eyeliner; it renders her practically unrecognizeable.

        • SugarSnap108

The only thing I’d change about the second look is her makeup. That black liner makes her eyes look tiny, and she needs color on her lips.

          (OK, and I prefer a side-part.)

  • Starts with K

I audibly gasped when I scrolled down to the shoes in look #2. And then I said out loud, to myself, in my cubicle, “love love love”.
    That entire look is perfection.

    • tallgirl1204

I want those shoes, and I don’t even wear heels. I just want to look at them on my coffee table, or maybe as a centerpiece in the dining room.

      • Starts with K

How about a shoe chandelier? I’m thinking this needs to be a thing.

        • Kitten Mittons

If this doesn’t exist, you need to do it and make some money. Genius.

ETA: Also, your name is triggering my imagination. I’m sitting here guessing K words.

  • ktr33

#2 is cute from head to toe. Love it, would love to wear it, would also be super cute on Ms. Lea, a 100x better version of her look today.
#1 – How bad it that hair? SO BAD.

    • Laura Abrahamsen

My first thought on the second look was that it is how Lea Michele should dress at all daytime events. It’s also great on Jessica–fresh, pretty and not trying too hard.

  • CPK1

the first dress fits so poorly and those shoes are vile. Second dress and shoes a win! Love, love, love although I am not feeling the make-up at all. The third s’alright. Cool color but seems so bulky.
I will be so bummed when Cannes is over. There has been some truly junky looks coming down the RC for us all to pick apart!

  • Denis

Whoever is doing her makeup has upped their game a bit. She looks lovely from the neck up. Even the “I just got out of the shower” hair in the first shot is really flattering.

    • kimmeister

They have finally figured out how to fill in her brows!

  • Lexie

I really love how often redheads are featured on this site. As a ginger myself, it’s great to see ladies like Jessica, Julianne, and Christina Hendricks on here and use them as a reference point. I meant to tell you both this when I met you at the B&N in Skokie, but I was too star-struck!

That being said, I love her hair in the first, and the bright blue color in the last, but that middle one wins best overall for me.

    • smayper

Happy ginger with matching grandmother, sister, and one out of three sons here — agree absolutely! Throughout my life, my hair has been the one thing about my appearance I have wholeheartedly loved — which is really saying something considering the amount of fucked-up self-image problems I have. Sadly now my color comes from the salon — but I’m just not ready to give it up yet.

  • Kitten Mittons

I like the colors of #1 and #3. She doesn’t always pick the best colors for her skintone, so that’s almost enough to make them both wins.

#2 is the best I’ve ever seen her look, period.

The only issue I have is with #1. That draping going up underneath her train looks like a catastrophic dress wedgie. Not something I want in a garment.

    • Anna

The draping is just awful on the first one when viewed from the side. Makes the boobs and butt look saggy/droopy and the mid-section look paunchy. Dresses that do even ONE of those things to your body should be avoided like the plague, nevermind all three.

      • Kitten Mittons

Yeah, no lie there. Especially when you see look #2, and how adorable she can look. Dresses that distort your body as much as #1 need to be kicked to the curb.

  • padma sallah

The first one looks like a sari draping gone tragically wrong with yards of fabric tucked into random odd places and bunched badly. The second look is cute and third look, the colour is gorgeous but that bust is a crime against humanity.

  • KendraMR

Look #2 is the best she’s ever looked. The dress, shoes, hair, AND makeup are all on point.

    • GeoDiva

Agree… But the strange thing is that is doesn’t look like her. Without the caption, I would have not know who it was. Her face is “off”.

      • kimmeister

I think she’s just squinting in the sunlight.

  • myandyleigh

Trickery was involved in the first three pics, causing a scrolldown fug for me but from picture to picture. The first pic came across as sort of neutral and inoffensive to me.

The second pic is a beautiful shot, like for a magazine, with her hair and that shoulder drape wafting behind her and I was all like, “WTF are TLo going on about? She looks beauti……”

    “Oh. Oh no.”

That third shot makes me think the whole thing should be burned and she should get a do over. And TLo, I’m sorry for briefly doubting your word. At least this time…

  • hughman

It was sweet of Bianca to lend her the blue dress at the end.

  • Kent Roby

The tiny matching belt with the first dress looks like an afterthought; I’d like to see some sort of bold wide embellished waist treatment to help the look pop. Otherwise, the main problem I have with the first look is that she is simply not selling it.

  • Vanessa Reyes

Love look #2. The color of the dress in Look #3 is gorgeous on her. Perhaps if they had gotten rid of the sleeve thingy and made it a strapless gown it would look much better. It looks as if the sleeve and the ruche are competing…It’s either one or the other..IMO

  • cowper

Well, the first dress is in the style of the “Flaming June” orange chiffon number that we all loved so much. Maybe she decided that Grecian goddess was her go-to look?

  • Nancer

Gosh. I’m probably going to be voted down, but I think all of these looks are beautiful! So nice to see these colors on the red carpet, and I think she looks amazing in all of these pictures!

    • yethica

      I agree.

  • Jay

Funny, the second look doesn’t do much for me, but I like the other two. The hair and makeup have a lot to do with it; I think the eyeliner in look #2 is much too heavy and the center part does her no favors. She’s at her best when she does old Hollywood glamour, like when she was at the Oscars for ‘Zero Dark Thirty.’

Also, her performance ‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby’ has me thinking she’s the best actress of her generation.

    • yethica

Dude. Have you seen “The Help”? She’s freaking amazing.

      • Jay

Yes, and while I was already extremely impressed by her, this new film has me bowing down. Long live Chastain!

        • yethica

  • GillianHolroyd

That last look is spectacular. The depth of color is insane.

Also love her makeup on the first look.

  • Danielle

The second look is giving me LIFE. Absolutely perfect and venue appropriate. Love the color of the first look but rendered in something completely different. The blue in the last look makes her eyes pop but the shape is so meh.

  • teensmom99

I love her make up in the first dress.

  • kmk05

The jewellery in all three looks is to DIE for. My life and non-existent first born for the first pair of earrings!

Her head in the first look (hair and makeup) is perfection. In the second, I love the take of her gays on the feline flick, but I wish her lips weren’t so matte/nude-y. In the third, it’s a bit been there/done that, because she seems to favour this sort of makeup the most.

I could take or leave both formal looks. I really wish she’d wear this royal blue more often.

  • Noah

Girl, what in the fuck is going on with the bodice in the second dress?

  • Vanessa

The train on #3 went through a dust storm…

  • Alyssa

I love the colors in looks 1 & 3…the second looks is perfection, and I NEED those shoes!

  • decormaven

First look is the definition of swaddling.

  • BobStPaul

Geez, I think she looks pretty spectacular, particularly in the third look. The makeup is off on the second look though the dress is cute.

  • Molly

I didn’t recognize her in the second look, her face and hair are just lovely. She has very very dramatic features that I think overwhelm at times. She reminds me a bit of Nadine Hurley.

  • DagnyReardon

Call me a brownnoser, but I’m with the Uncles on all 3 here.

  • OhSheila

I think she looks great in the third except she looks like she hates her life.

  • Crystal

I’m just glad she isn’t wearing yellow all the time like she used to.

  • Danielle

Coming back here to fangirl all over her makeup in the second look. It’s just amazing.

  • oklund

Wow, I love the formal dresses! It makes her look like a fairytale pre-Rafaelite painting goddess. The casual chic is just meh for me.

  • BLauD

I am in love with that second look. I want it for myself… for all the imaginary dressy-casual places I have to go all the time.
She looks thoroughly miserable in the first and third looks, and I wonder if she’s not feeling them either.

  • Tracy_Flick

In the last look, the bright blue dress, bright red lipstick, and lovely pale skin are individually nice, but together are a bit USA USA USA. Or given the location VIVE LA FRANCE.

  • MilaXX

First: Dislike for all the reasons mentioned
Second: Like for all the reasons mentioned
Third: Meh. It’s kind of stiff looking. It’s okay

  • Pablo

There was a picture with the wind blowing from the first look that was pretty fabulous, and I totally agree with you guys about the second one PERFECTION.

  • B_C_J

The first gown is a lovely color but the fit & what it is doing to her body is a TRAGEDY. There is too much gathered fabric which is not flattering her figure. The second dress looks like something you could purchase at any upscale store. It fits nicely but utterly forgettable. The third dress’ saturated color is gorgeous. It also informs the onlooker that the wearer is a star. It has some issues but it is the best look of the three.

  • israel8491

Polite disagreement on the first look. She looks stunning.

  • Reine Bron

I prefer the lilac color on her than the blue

  • siriuslover

she looks like different people in each of these outfits. I love purple, but that first gown is hideous.

  • brown-eyed girl

Has she . . . had some facial work done? Something’s different.

  • marlie

I’m going to have to disagree with TLo. I think she looks beautiful in both of the gowns. The lavender gown is very Grecian-goddess-pretty, and the third is Hollywood-glamour-pretty. The second dress is really cute, but I’m not crazy about the shoes. In all three cases, she definitely gets an “you go girl!” for her hair and makeup.

  • Pennymac

I’ve got to figure out how work “droopy uniboob” into casual conversation.

  • Luzia

did T&Lo ever explain why they don’t like goddessy outfits? it’s not chic and too costumey?

  • Shawn EH

She’s had some amazing formal looks, but she must not have her full team in Cannes or something. Wayyyy too bland, but cute black dress! Are those maple leaves? Is she Canadian?

  • BritneyE

That second look is killer. She looks five years younger. The makeup and softer hair go a long way.

  • unbornfawn

That second look is pretty much a WERQ. She needs to make better color and shape choices with her evening looks.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The first look is a definite no-not her color, and the gown makes Jessica look thick. Like the McQueen dress, and her hair. The third look works for me-the blue is a gorgeous color for her, and it speaks to my fondness for glam.

  • livesarah

The colour of the first dress is perfect, but it takes her natural lack of a defined waist and pushes it towards postpartum. Bad dress! The second- nailed it.
The third I think really works for her because it uses tailoring/magic to create a well-defined waist while keeping that beautiful colour that suits her so well.

  • BrooklynBomber

First one looks like a costume. Second is excellent (I WANT that dress!). Third slightly better than first. Which isn’t saying much.

  • lundibleu

Eva Green, SJP and others need to look at these pictures and see how teeny small changes in eye makeup can make massive changes to how you look. She looks completely different in the more casual look, and much more comfortable too. I do love both the blues though, just not the dresses.

  • Glammie

I don’t actually hate the purple dress, I just hate it on her. She’s too damned short to pull off that much fabric and draping. Similar problem with the blue dress. And, yeah, the purple looks bridesmaid on her, but would work on someone darker.

  • demidaemon

Hate her make-up on the third look. Totally throws the entire effect off. Second is awesome. I really don’t think the asymmetrical one-shoulder is her silhouette.

  • hillmad

She looks like a completely different person in the second dress. I’ve never seen her without a dramatic lip color. It’s a nice change! She looks so relaxed. Love the blue gown, too. That first one–how can anyone so gorgeous look so blah? For shame, stylists!

  • mlle

Back in the day, I skipped my prom to avoid drowning in a sea of dresses much like the one in the first set of photos.

  • LadyVimes

That second one though. SO CUTE.

  • kt

Sweet lord that face. The first and third dress colors are glorious on her, the second outfit is for brunch

  • DesertDweller79

I love that cute black dress! I want it! I even promise to wear it with some cute, print pumps. The blue color on that second gown is beautiful on her, but the dress is bland.

I can’t even believe Elie Saab made that first one. Elie Saab? Really?

  • katarama

The cap sleeve and the hip furbelow should be on opposite sides on the blue dress, and then she wouldn’t look like she was listing to the right all the time
