Jennifer Lopez in Fyodor Golan on the Set of “American Idol”

Posted on May 15, 2014

This is so perfectly J Lo that she looks like the Official J Lo Fashion Doll or something. Like this is the outfit that comes with the doll.

If one of the RuPaul’s Drag Race queens decided to do J Lo for the Snatch Game, this is what they’d wear. It is the Ur-J Lo look. When they sell cheap J Lo Halloween costumes at the drug store some day (and they will), it’ll be a highly flammable version of this dress hanging on a plastic hanger with a fake ponytail and false eyelashes stapled to some cardboard with a coupon for some cheap green eyeshadow on the back.

Believe it or not, that makes this an Attagirl all the way. Know your image and sell the shit out of it. This is the quintessential “Everyone Wants to Be Me or Do Me” look.  It ain’t chic, but it sure is J Lo.

That model though! If I had had a doll like her when I was a little moppet, I might not have spent so much time lusting after Barbie’s blond locks. She needs to be an action figure.

Also — “a highly flammable version of this dress…” more flammable than THIS version? Um…

    • demidaemon

Exactly. If this isn’t highly flammable, I worry what the warning labels on the highly flammable one would be. “Do not wear in temperatures greater than 32 degrees farenheit.”

      • formerlyAnon

Made me laugh, & I’m a bit cranky right now. Thanks.

        • demidaemon

No problem. I’m glad I could brighten up your day.

  • SuzyQuzey

Ur-JLo is a perfect description. Loved that book; hate this dress.

  • clatie

this is awful. AWFUL. if we reward her for this, how will she ever learn? NO! BAD JLO!

  • malarson2

I cant get over that she looks – dare I say – a little lumpy frumpy when just walking in the lot, but the second she’s taking the ‘official’ photo she looks like perfection. Oh, JLo. She knows her stuff.

    • Rhonda Shore

That’s what i think and it’s caused by the high neckline. The J LO doll would sport cleavage, come on!!!

      • malarson2

Totally. And I think I would go to a Halloween party on a date with a guy who would wear that up-and-coming costume of the future.

        • Rhonda Shore

it’s better with the bolero jacket and pants…but that would be way too much fabric for J LO!

          • barbarienne

I want the pants added, but not the bolero. But then she needs Lizard Queen hair and maybe a scepter and a trailing bunch of cowering minions.

          • Judih1

I like the pant with the top too, but have we ever seen JLo in pants? Shorts yes, pants I don’t think so.

I don’t really care for the look, it is kinda like a cheap, bargain basement version of J-Lo. She can do better than this

    • Liza Ortiz

      is the ‘official’ photo shopped?

      • malarson2

I have no clue. But I sure would like to know!

  • Janet B

Why do I love the green shoes of the runway look?

    • kimmeister

Because, like many people, you are part magpie and attracted to shiny things?

      • Janet B

Not usually, but they are calling to me.

    • moppet

      ME TOO.

  • imperfectlaura

I really don’t like this. Nor do I think it’s quintessentially JLo. I think it’s more quintessentially Heidi Klum.

    • demidaemon

If it was hemmed up to her hoo-ha and had a slit down the bodice for the cleavage, it would be quintessential Heidi.

    • FrigidDiva

I just think it’s quintessentially ugly. I’m really not feeling this look at all.

  • MoHub

Interesting that you mentioned JLo as a doll. There’s already a JLo Barbie.

  • Jen

Wait, this isn’t the highly flammable version??

  • MoHub

I need to know where I can get the runway shoes. I am filled with lust for them.

    • Constant Reader

I’m glad it’s not just me. There is something about that crazy green color + shiny that I absolutely love.

  • DTLAFamilies

The woman has a figure like a brick shithouse and this dress makes her look like a sack of potatoes. No me gusta.

    • kimmeister

Her foundational garments are not doing their job in this look. Something is creating a roll in her midsection.

      • sugarkane105

This is what always happens when I wear Spanx. Anybody know how to avoid it? Other than an all-kale diet, obviously.

        • Angela

She needs the Spanx that go all the way up to the bra line. The top of the Spanx waist bulge is never a good look, especially with green metallic mermaid fabric.

          • kimmeister

Exactly what I was going to say. The only reason I wear Spank-like things under certain dresses is to avoid having the seams of underwear/hosiery/slips showing around the midsection. (And also to wrangle in the booty, of course!)

  • gabbilevy

She’s just trolling us now, right? Although I *don’t* hate the whole look on the model: on the right girl, that could be fabulous.

  • Nearly positive one of my Barbies had this dress. Or at least, a dress made of this material. Snow Queen Barbie?

    • @Biting Panda

I was leaning towards Mermaid Barbie.

      • scoobynacks

The verdict options should be either ‘This Dress Belongs Under the Sea’ or ‘We Want to be Part of Your World.’

    • bitchybitchybitchy

My Barbie (and we are speaking here of back in the day with the original doll) had a strapless gold brocade sheath dress with a coat in the same fabric with fur-trimmed sleeves.

      • Ok, the one I was thinking of definitely had a pale blue dress with a hooded cape trimmed in white fur made of this. She was always the villain Barbie when I’d play.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Barbie always had great wardrobes. The outfit yours had would make such a great evil ice queen.

  • Imasewsure

Just a simple day dress for a Diva…. works for me!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Hola, peons! I, your Goddess, am here! Bow to me now, and despair!

  • LeelaST

The fabric looked very see-through under the Idol lights last night too. Added to the slutty-factor. Yay.

    • demidaemon

Don’t get too excited about it. 😉

  • Anna

    On J-Lo: Meh, it’s J-Lo.

On the model: Shamelessly LOVE. I would totally cast her and the whole look in my version of a Jem and the Holograms reboot.

  • Tanya Wade

Well, somebody got their cha cha heels on.

  • Frank_821

Personally I think it’s a mistake to wear just the dress. She should have added the pants or the jacket. The dress alone reads one big cheap “of course”

btw is that Alex Wek on the runway?

  • mimi

She must have a constant headache with all these super-tight ponytails.

    • venusvelvet

It’s got to be thinning her hairline.

  • NMMagpie

An “of course” and a “no” all in one.

  • Danielle

That fabric is so tacky I can’t even bring myself to look at it.

    • demidaemon

It’s better that way. We’ll be blinded and have the seizures for you.

  • I’m so disappointed that she didn’t wear the jacket as well.

    • MilaXX

The jacket is the only part of that runway look I would wear.

  • FibonacciSequins

    That’s a well-crafted backhanded compliment, there.

Divine would have rocked the shit out of this look.

  • Blythe Irish

Forget the dress. The jacket from the runway look is everything!

  • Shawn EH

Bamm! Instant J-Lo, bitches! However, the model takes it to somewhere much more chic.

LOVE the ensemble on the model, total gorgeous. On J-Lo, it’s just tacky ass drag dress…….

    • FrigidDiva

It just looks like that terrible, cheap sequined fabric you can get a JoAnn’s that they make dance costumes out of (I’m not really even sure what else you could use that fabric for, I certainly wouldn’t make a dress out of it).

      • TRSTL

Agree the fabric looks cheap in the photos but at least the total look on the runway had some interest and depth.

  • boweryboy

She elicits so many frickin’ eyerolls from me that I have a headache whenever I see a picture of her.

  • Lori

Is it just a trick of the light hitting that weird-ass fabric or is this thing seriously see-through?

    • MilaXX

      I think that’s the lining.

      • Lori

If the lining makes you look nekkid it would seem that someone failed to really grasp the whole lining concept.

  • Sonia Perez

  • RestaurantResolution

I love this dress, but it has to fit properly and it doesn’t. I want it. And the jacket. And I would definitely wear them together. With silver combat boots. Omg.

  • MilaXX

It’s perfectly JLo. I have to give her credit for looking at the runway version and even seeing a somewhat salvageable look. It is her look and hers alone, although I think Heidi Klum might want to fight her for it.

    • Mrs. C

I would pay $$ to watch that fight. And I’ll bring the popcorn.

  • Mrs. C

“It ain’t chic, but it sure is J Lo”–THIS! Also, the waistline of her spanx is two inches lower than the waistline of this dress.

  • KES4K

Um, to me this just screams ‘itchy and ill-fitting late-90’s jazz dance recital costume’; aka, the sort of thing that forced me out of the dance class life for good.

  • Karen Belgrad

Isn’t this what the Love Boat Mermaids wore?

  • S-k-s

I don’t quite understand why but the fact that the model is wearing it with a sequinned pants and jacket somehow makes it less tacky.

    • Judy_J

I was thinking the same thing. I kind of like it with the jacket and pants. I wouldn’t wear it, but I like it on the model.

  • Glam Dixie

Too tight. Her poor boobs. (and I’m pretty sure I can see through it in some of the shots, no bueno)

    • formerlyAnon

To use an out-of-date descriptor: Girl is the Crown Princess from the Universe of the Latina Bombshell & has always owned it. In that universe, “too tight” means your lips are blue and the paramedics are warning you risk gangrene if you don’t allow bloodflow back out to your extremities. The occasional lump, bump or roll just means it’s all bountiful, wonderful HER.

  • Bonnie Blue

“When they sell cheap J Lo Halloween costumes at the drug store some day (and they will), it’ll be a highly flammable version of this dress hanging on a plastic hanger with a fake ponytail and false eyelashes stapled to some cardboard with a coupon for some cheap green eyeshadow on the back.” Hahahahahaha! Thanks for the big laugh!

Amazing how different it all looks in the “official” posed picture, she knows how to sell the outfit.

    • suzq

      Lighting helps. A lot.

  • *passes out from the sparkly*

  • suzq

That lightbox shot is stunning. That lightbox has the potential to make every craptastic dress look fabulous. Let’s replace the “step and repeat” with one of these!!!

  • jonnyf8

Harry told her she looked like a mermaid.

  • SewingSiren

    Stick on sequins.

  • 3boysful

This is awful. Unflattering to the bust and hips, giving her mid section rolls, cheap flammable fabric . . . and a Wilma hem?

  • Debra Mandich

Im glad you brought up DragRace. . .cause Jennifer reminds me of a female impersonator impersonator in a good way. Shiny to tight dress, ruthless hair, one tone body. . . How freaking much fun would it be to be a female impersonator impersonator? Some boys get all the fun

  • Sobaika

I don’t know… I usually love JLo’s ability to elevate and pull off difficult looks but her super powers are not working here.

    • formerlyAnon

I think she’s pulling it off Because She Says SO! And knows it with every atom of her being.

  • Terri Terri

Jennifer, Schmennifer. I love the photo of the model — BAM!!!

  • Lisalady161

    She is so tiresome.

  • Tracy_Flick

I actually love this, but only because I’m a magpie when it comes to sequins. And I’m squinting so I can’t see how the top is pulling strangely around the neck and bust.

  • ScarlettHarlot

Oh man, third grade me would have loved a scrunch in that fabric!

  • Fuchsiaforever

J-LO’s got the worst taste ever!!!! How can she be SO famous?

But somehow I LOVE the look on the model picture!

    • somebody blonde

I admit, I kind of love her. Sometimes I wish there was less taste in the world and more glitter, and JLo embodies that philosophy. It’s the same thing that makes me value purple Cadillacs with gold spinny rims over pewter Audis. Yes, it’s tacky, but it’s also interesting and fun. Too much good taste is boring.

      • Fuchsiaforever

Ok I get you. I’m just trying to understand what people see in her. I’m puertorrican so maybe that’s why I’m a harsher judge. I just think she’s 100% TACKY. I can’t see the interesting and fun. I just see TACKY.

        • formerlyAnon

See, having taste is just a barrier, with her. She KNOWS she’s awesome, and that carries her for me, even if it’s not my style. I do know a number of women (admittedly, a bit older than she) who owned a similar style say, 20 or 30 years ago when they were fabulous, and knew it, and were taking NO OTHER OPINIONS, thankyouverymuch! So maybe I enjoy her in their honor.

  • BobStPaul

    “Ur-J Lo look” indeed.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Shouldn’t there be a JLo doll? Think of the fashion and accessory possibilities-I would buy that in a heartbeat, and then stage a fight between my Heidi Klum and JLo dolls.

    • Gatto Nero

The two queens of “short, tight, and shiny”!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

If they ever appear together, all present will be blinded.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

There was a JLo doll for Barbie collectors, but she wasn’t voluptuous enough.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

        I missed that.

  • Susan Velazquez

This was not an outfit that called for a pony tail. It makes her head look small

    • Isabel

She’s pulling her hair too much lately. Girl, don’t lose the hair that you have.

  • somebody blonde

I love this. I do wish she had worn it with that fabulous jacket, though. She wouldn’t have gone for the pants, but that jacket just makes me covetous inside and she would’ve looked incredible in it.

  • bluefish

Very Sabado Gigante. Love her assistant’s sandals.

    • formerlyAnon

    • MartyBellerMask

      Needs peekaboo cleavage cut-outs, I think. 🙂

  • demidaemon

I thought this was already flammable?

Thank god she didn’t wear the full runway look. Everyone would be having seizures.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Just the outfit to wear when you are faux humping your “judge”‘s chair. (She has irritated me so much this season on Idol that I may never be able to say anything even vaguely nice about her ever again.)

  • ktr33

It’s fine in the posed shot, but walking — it’s not doing her any favors. Something’s not quite right. Her upper body looks matronly.

  • Mrs. O

Oh my goodness! No. Makes her look chunky and matronly. How is that even possible?

  • Mrs. O

Forgot to say – love her hair. But maybe for a weekend of shopping. Not for work?

  • ShaoLinKitten

It needs to be one size bigger, though.

  • I am almost certain I had a mermaid Barbie (or Ariel Barbie) with a tail in this exact sort of fabric. SO SHINY. Can’t hate on mermaid realness.

But gimme the runway pants – I NEED ME SOME SHINY PANTS. Will take the jacket and shoes too (to wear separately).

  • formerlyAnon

This is the performance version of a dress you’ll see at many a ginormous wedding reception or gala fundraiser in San Antonio or Miami this weekend and every other through at least the end of September. As I said elsewhere, she is the Crown Princess of the Latina Bombshell Universe, to use an antiquated descriptor.

  • Paula Pertile

    This made my day, thanks.

  • What are ya gonna do…. This actually MAY have worked if there was some, not a huge amount of cleavage. As it is it enhances her bust to a point of appearing matronly and HUGE.

  • Mothra

Um. can i see her areolas thru that dress? I am SO not comfortable with that!

  • Judih1

    what’s with the striped hair?

  • d4divine

I know it’s been working for her for YEARS…but me thinks it is time for Madam JLo to switch that look up a bit…god forbid she starts clinging to the look of her much younger self… Madonna

  • KendraMR

I didn’t know a dress could give a woman those kinds of enhancements. She looks like a Latina Dolly Parton.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Totally! Disco ball boobs.

  • kt

That jacket is my new everything. And some flip of sequins makes it look like her purple areoles are showings. Heads will roll

  • velomango

I want the sandals on the woman next to hear in that last photo.

  • Truthiness2U

She looks horrible in this dress. It’s unflattering, and she looks desperate. And if she was doing drag, I would say she’s doing some Adore levels of dressing, in that dress, make-up, and hair.

  • ItAin’tMe

I so much love the complete look on the model.

  • LVC

It’s a waste of the overall look, though …

  • kmk05

How is she turning into Barbie JLo? I thought that wouldn’t have been possible, but it IS. I don’t even know how one turns into a caricature of oneself, but there you have it.

  • I hate this, but then again, I don’t like much that J-Lo wears. Her style is just too “cheap and slutty.” There, I said it.

  • Lilithcat

It’s very odd. I’d have thought that adding more would be overkill. Yet I like the runway version so much better.

  • 25or6to4

I want to be the model. I don’t care if that isn’t my normal (less flammable) style — SO SHINY!

  • WendyD

It actually looked better on screen.

  • Get her in Jem & the Holograms. STAT.

    • Tarn

When Jem got big, Barbie tried to follow suit with Barbie and the Rockers. My Barbie rocker doll had a shiny crinkly turquoise jacket that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this JLo dress! Resemblance is uncanny, only without the neon yellow lacy leggings and finger gloves.

      • I will sometimes get the Barbie and the Rockers theme song stuck in my head.

  • BrooklynBomber

Good lord. It’s fine in the indoor picture, but I imagine all that reflected light caused traffic accidents outside.

  • ChelseaNH

She should have gone up a size; the dress looks like an overstuffed sausage casing, which is not the best look for the body inside it.

  • I kind of love it.

  • kategs

Makes me feel a tiny bit better that she too, has a muffin top.

  • smh4748

I cracked up at the picture of the model. I don’t think I really get fashion.

  • EEKstl

Gawd help me, I like it better with the leggings. Go figure.

  • Aurumgirl

The model looks fantastic in it.

  • JynxTheCat

I don;t wanna be here or do her. She always looks like she’s forever pissed off unless she is in front of an audience.

  • AnneElliot

It’s kind of awesome on the model, who looks like a badass space queen/goddess (LOVE the pointy flats!). On JLo, it just looks cheap, and I’m sure it wasn’t. I’m sure I would have liked it more if it wasn’t so tight on her.

  • it looks so different on the model. i guess the designer didn’t have the skin tight fit in mind. i’d love to see the jacket on her. now that would be a flashy look.

  • Daylight

She lumbers when she walks and that ruins everything for me. If you can’t walk in heels, then you just don’t have it.

  • [email protected]

Looks like a Star Trek Bimbo costume from the original series. That is a wonderful thing.

  • Akemi
