IN or OUT: Amy Poehler in Monique Lhuillier at Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project Picnic

Posted on May 30, 2014

This looks like a really cute Leslie Knope outfit.

Like she’s about to announce Pawnee’s anti-litter campaign or something. But while we like it, it’s definitely a look that’s more than the sum of its parts.

Love the shoes especially. We’re struggling with the rest of it, even though the overall effect is good. We just wouldn’t have picked white lace for her. And while the jacket’s an admirable attempt to take the dress away from looking bridal, the two pieces don’t look like they belong together.  We’d have loved a white dress/gray jacket combo if the dress wasn’t lace.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! It’s Pawnee CHIC!

OUT! It’s Business Bridal, which is a thing that should not exist.

The Bitter Kittens simply could NOT with Cate Blanchett and her Jetsons Golden Girl outfit, voting it OUT.

    • lunchcoma

OUT, mostly for going with bland non-colors when that beautiful turquoise was an option.

      • Kathy_Marlow

Swap out that white with the turquoise and we’d have been singing hosannas

      • SugarSnap108

As a pale lass myself, it’s crazy to me that she’d pick this over the turquoise.

      • kimmeister

Ditto on the OUT for those reasons.

    • GSMSF

In! She looks beautiful and comfortable and happy. It’s not the most fashion forward outfit, but if it makes her feel that good about herself than she has my vote.

      • Introspective

that’s my take. i like that there’s comfort without sacrificing her shapeliness. grey and white is a lovely summer combo. can even take the lace dress as much as im not a lace fan, because the jacket tones it down.

overall, shes looking good and im not mad at it.

      • Carleenml

I think there were better pictures of her. Ones with Bette looked much prettier.

      • Rhonda Shore

        And love the styling. IN!

    • @Biting Panda

      In. Cute.

    • twocee

No way Leslie Knope would wear those shoes.

      • kirkyo

Judging from how white her toes are, the real Leslie Knope rarely does either.

    • Michael_Jones

In. She just appears so comfortable in this, that I’ll overlook the lace and call it “in” for the “be me” qualities.

    • conniemd

      Out for being blandly boring.

      • Imasewsure

Yes normally I don’t vote OUT simply because it’s boring but this one won me over… OUT again!!

    • Denise Rambo

OMG! The COAT in the turquoise shot!

    • Wink

In. Clean, crisp and springy. She looks good. Way better than her usual attire.

    • Sherry N. Sutton

OUT. Why she didn’t go with the turquoise I don’t know.

      • charlotte

Turqouise must be an Eagleton color or something.

    • RussellH88

I wish she opted for the original color.

As someone who is pale, I always try to wear something that will pop against my skin, so I try to stay away from greys and instead favor something brighter. I almost never wear white.

    • Shawn EH

Out. Needed the statement coat from the model.

      • decormaven

That coat would have kicked up to WERQ- worthy.

    • TM

IN- I love the light gray immensely and want an entire summer wardrobe consisting of it. Also, I totes get the draw of white lace post-Memorial Day.
(Also, I completely adore Amy. So there’s that.)

    • mickiemonkey

IN! She is adorable and looks put together.

    • Tricia

In!! Really cute, though she could’ve gone for a non-grey clutch.

    • rkdgal

While it could have been better, Leslie Knope always gets an IN from me.

    • MilaXX

Small IN for me. I wish she was wearing the model’s teal blue instead, but this is still cute.

    • Kimberly Southern-Weber

IN. She looks soft and pretty.

    • Michele Morningstar

In! She looks happy and comfortable, and the overall look is nice!

    • thrillckr

      In. She looks adorbs!

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

IN – i don’t get why its even a source of contention. she looks really pretty, especially for a gal that sometimes struggles with her rc style.

    • Chuck Barthelme

Seems appropriate for something for Bette Midler, honestly. Not very dramatic or interesting, but it’s not offensive, either.

      • Gatto Nero

        My first reaction, too: inoffensive.

    • deelup

In. Totally appropriate for the event and she looks lovely.

    • Gatto Nero

A grudging OUT here. I agree that the lace dress with that blazer is a disconnect.
Otherwise this is a somewhat bland but appropriate look for the occasion.

    • frannyprof

      IN. She looks great.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

In. I think it’s a great outfit for the event and it’s in summery colors!

    • dashwoodstole

Out – I was thinking wedding before you even mentioned bridal.

    • Jessica Freeman

OUT. She needed the blue so bad. Business bridal…I love you Uncles.

    • Mothra

I love the dress but he jacket is boring as hell. Not everyone can wear white and she looks good in it. She looks adorable and even her hair looks ok.

    • another_laura

Out. I think those are faux lapels on that jacket which is just dumb. I cannot sign off on a white lace dress anymore, even on a hot NYC day, which it wasn’t because then why the jacket and yes I like a run-on sentence sometimes. Love the shoes, though.

    • gitchygitchymama

That’s one ill-fitting jacket on top of a lackluster doily dress.

    • alyce1213

In. It’s simple and summery. She looks lovely.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

In … because it’s figure-flattering, seasonally appropriate and she looks happy and comfortable. Certainly it could have used some color, but still better than some of her red carpet looks.

    • butterflysunita

      In. She looks pretty.

    • Alyssa

In. I like a white-and-gray combo. And I super want/need the turquoise coat on the model.

    • prisma

Out. Like the dress but can’t sign off on the business bridal effect.

    • Anna

Aww, she looks cute! In. Yes, I prefer the turquoise and it’s a little engagement party luncheon, but she looks so happy and pretty.

Also, I can’t wait for her new book, a resounding yes please! for “Yes Please.” All my girlfriends can pretty much count on getting a copy for Christmas.

    • Tee

So, so cute! Love the shoes!

    • greymain

      out….BIG OUT.

    • uprightcitizen

In. It all fits her beautifully, and matching the shoes to the jacket and then going with a darker gray clutch seems like such a clever little twist on matching accessories to an outfit, but not committing the matchy-matchy sin. Plus, it’s almost impossible to look at Amy Poehler and not feel happier for having done so.

    • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

IN! I think she looks great! Weather appropriate and comfortable. She’s not a fashionista so safe and pretty are right for her.

    • Grumpy Girl

I love the color of the grey jacket. At first look, I gave this an In, and thought how much more I liked those “seen em everywhere” shoes in that color, than any other.

But once I saw the model shot with the fabulous color (wow, what that would have done with Amy’s eyes!) and beautiful coat, and I’m kind of sad. And it doesn’t fit perfectly.

But it does fit the occassion. And I love the grey. So, IN.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

she should have worn it in the blue…but IN

    • AmyO

In! She looks fresh, confident and pulled together. Love the hair/make-up!

    • susan6

She looks pretty, but she looks like an older bride on her way to the courthouse. Any other color but white and I would have no problem at all. But still….she looks good, so IN.

    • allisankelly

I like it, but I’m a lace-freak, so IN! Even the naked shoes. Love the mani/pedi, hate the orange hands that go white at the fingers. Spray tan is very overrated in my opinion! Oompa Loompa is never a good thing, unless we are in fact at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

    • Imasewsure

I was hesitating to give this an out because it’s truly inoffensive but then you mentioned “Business Bridal” and that hit it right on the boring head… OUT

    • FibonacciSequins

IN, mostly for the shoes and bag.

    • malarson2

In. She is, hands down, my favorite person on the planet. Besides my kids, of course. Actually…

    • Sophie

Business Bridal, out. I’d have loved it in the original colour.

    • Jessica O’Connell

IN. I think she looks fantastic!

    • BobStPaul

      It’s an in for me.

    • Danielle

      In because she’s Amy Poehler.

    • ktr33

IN. She’s not a fashion icon, she’s the ever-delightful Amy Poehler, so I think this is a perfectly viable attagirl, all around.
The turquoise (?) or aqua (?) is smashing but might’ve overwhelmed her a little; I think it’s better for a brunette.

    • TheLaurenJean

In! Gotta encourage the better for this one!

    • Janet B

That’s a fancy picnic. Don’t wear bridal to a picnic.
      OUT

    • kfizz

      Meh. Out.

    • Lori

Out. She looks good and I would have liked it if she’d gone with a color. As it is, it’s business bridal and that definitely should not exist. She looks like she’s popping over to the courthouse on her lunch hour to legalize marriage #5. Amy Peohler is better than that (and so in Leslie Knope).

    • KendraMR

      IN. She looks good.

    • flamingoNW

      In

    • lynnlee

In. She looks happy and her hair is great!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      In. Beautiful.

    • Sarah

IN because it’s perfect for a party in the park with Lil’ Sebastian.

    • ashtangajunkie

IN. She looks lovely, head to toe.

    • Erica

In. It’s a nice outfit for a spiffy picnic.

    • Constant Reader

OUT. Stepmother of the bride who is pissing off the bride by wearing white lace and claiming that the gray jacket stops it from looking bridal. Two vodka martinis into the reception, that jacket will be off.

    • kim bunchalastnames

      i think she looks wonderful.

    • Aidan B

In! She looks cute and put together, and most importantly, it looks like everything fits well. My only quibble: I wish she’d stuck with the original blue.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. She looks sweet and lovely and not like a cartoon, which I think is where she struggles. With the toon.

    • Cortney Dean

It will always be an in for me based solely on her awesomeness. Sort of like the female RDJ. Wear whatever you want, your sheer awesomeness shall transcend even the most bland of dresses.

    • R.A.

I am SO excited to read her book when it’s published in October. Just putting that out there.

P.S. In other SO-news, I am SO happy that you finally watched Parks and Rec, Uncles. It is my favourite.

    • Sunraya

I would have loved it on her in the blue!

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’m fine with it in a “not all that exciting but, hey, I’m cool” summer way. So I’m giving it an IN.

    • MarissaLG

IN! It’s not the most outrageous outfit, but she looks lovely.

    • Pennymac

IN! I love it when stars look happy and comfortable in what they are wearing.

    • withbreaththatisbated

In. I actually love the white-gray for this event better than the turquoise. However, she needs a new tanner. She always looks orange and splotchy. Her fingers and toes looks so weird!

      • decormaven

That’s the strangest effect of spray tan on hands I’ve seen, ever.

    • http://cakesandcakesvintage.blogspot.com cakesandcakesvintage

In! She looks awesome. I actually love the white lace/dove gray blazer together.

    • unbornfawn

IN. It might be a bit boring, but that is really the only flaw. She looks at home in her skin.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana F.

It’s good enough. I love her, so IN. I also think her hair looks fab.

    • crash1212

IN. I love all those pieces together and can happily sign off on the “naked” shoes in this deployment.

    • Anne Elliot

      so In! she looks fabulous

    • SewingSiren

Very stylish little white dress. Perfect for summer or late spring. The jacket is a little to business trip, but maybe this is a business trip for her.

    • formerlyAnon

In – but ONLY because the event has the word “Picnic” in it. It’s way too generic office wear/church on a Sunday when in a hurry for a normal red carpet.

    • GoAwayKardash

IN! She looks gorgeous. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS COMPLAINING ABOUT???

    • Cheryl

It’s not exciting, for sure, but it seems to fit well and looks flattering, so it’s an IN for me. I hate the lipstick, and what’s up with the odd half tanned hands? Backs of her hands are tanned but the fingers are white. Hey I get wearing gloves to protect the hands from the sun, I sure as hell wish I did that years ago, when I was vigilant about sunscreen but ended up removing it from my hands with my constant hand washing. But if you’re going to wear gloves as sun protection then protect the whole hand.

    • Julie Chase

In, even though the colors make me sleepy.

    • FoxInSocks

I think some of the color the model’s wearing would be more fun, but she looks great and totally event-appropriate, so IN for Ms. Amy from this bk.

    • Nancer

In. Nothing objectionable here. Moving along.

    • Monabel

In. Why should those greedy brides hog all the white lace?

    • azaleap

She looks great. BTW white is OK after Memorial Day

    • smayper

      Her toes are startlingly white.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Out, because it’s such a pale shadow of the turquoise version, which is fierce.

    • Danielle West

In. Not hideous enough for an out.

    • StarburstLady

      Eh. Out.

    • sunshine and chaos

In. I follow Amy Poehler Smart Girls on Twitter. The timeline is full of retweets from proud, smart women who are graduating from college or are in college. I’m imagining Amy is busy doing the retweeting herself so she can wear whatever she wants. She’s spreading joy and inspiration and it’s been awesome reading what all the different women have accomplished.

    • poggi

In. She looks pretty and happy. That and a pedicure will go a long way with me.

    • IraKi

This outfit is like having sex with an 18-year-old. You know it’s ok but it still is kinda wrong… I would say IN-ish…

    • PeggyOC

In. It’s cute, it fits well and it suits her. It’s not burning up the runways, but there’s nothing honestly objectationable.

    • BLauD

In, but only because it’s not too bad… I almost wish she had gone for that blue on the model.

    • GeoDiva

OUT: It looks like she took a lunch break to get married at the court house then went back for her 2 o’clock meeting.

    • somebody blonde

In. She looks fine, and your aversion to lace is irrational. I would’ve preferred a color, but it looks fine.

    • marlie

I think this is perfect for a luncheon-type event, which seems apropos for this event. I like it. Oh – IN.

    • Paula Pertile

I was going to say “In!” until I read Business Bridal. Now I’m confused.

    • barbarienne

It was borderline for me, and then I saw how the color of the jacket brings out her eyes. I’m going to assume that’s real and not colored contacts. Tips me over to an IN.

    • Anplica Fiore

In – she looks cute & fresh!

    • colorjunky

OUT, tacky exec outfit, like shoes tho

    • http://lifelovelibrarianship.com/ LibrarianLizy

Out, but only because she didn’t wear it in the blue. In the white it just looks like a dress I’d wear to a sorority initation.

    • random_poster

In! She looks cute. I do wish she’d gone with the turquoise dress.

    • beebee10

IN really not bad at all…

    • stubbornthoughts

IN! She looks beautiful, regardless of the fact that the turquoise color would’ve been a WERQ.

    • Let it out

IN! She looks fresh-faced and adorable.

    • fringebenefit

IN! She looks great in white.

    • MW

IN. Lovely and put together and I love the red nails.

    • Verascity

      IN for Leslie Knope.

    • semirose

IN because she does look nice but Amy why not the blue? That was a silly decision.

    • KayEmWhy

      IN it fits the occasion.

    • sunflower

IN. seems right for the event

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

IN. She looks great, and her fashion evolution has been on such a consistent upswing….a TLo “IN” from the BKs is the validation she needs to keep on getting better!! Also: I am immediately prejudiced for anything involving Bette Midler, who is a goddess.

    • Scimommy

      IN!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

The combination is definitely unexpected, but she looks very pretty and Leslie Knope seems like the perfect style inspiration for this event. wIN! Whoever chose the bag has some pretty sophisticated instincts when it comes to color.

    • elemspbee

      OUT. Uninspired

    • teensmom99

IN because she looks great & she seems to have listened to a weather report.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

IN. She looks great, and venue-appropriate.

    • DuBey2

Out. Mall fare. Any mall that does NOT have Neiman or Nordstrom or, well, you get it…

    • Gloriana Reginata

That looked so much more interesting in the turquoise.

    • NMMagpie

Love her but not this outfit. OUT.

    • VioletFem

OUT. She would have look so much better in the blue version of this dress, since that color looks so good on her. The version she chose is too bland.

    • LaSylphide

In because it’s cute if bland. But I have to ask: on what planet does anyone dress like that for a picnic?

    • Yoshio

      OUT

    • GinnyThePainter

Gotta say yes to this dress, ’cause I can’t say nope to the Knope. But it’s weird when textures and not colors clash.

    • CatherineRhodes

IN. You had me at Pawnee.

    • The Counselor

In. I like its simplicity and the fact that the lace is so lined just makes the dress look textured to me, not bridal.

    • a_liking

      inoffensive IN.

    • demidaemon

I mean, it’s not awful, but it is a bit enh. If this were not in white but the model’s blue, I would like it more. As is, it’s enh and white, so OUT. Sorry, Amy!

    • Courtney

In, with an asterisk for being meh. It’s not a bad outfit, but it’s not anything particularly special, either.

    • lamh36

OUT, I like it in the blue shade much better

    • Samantha

      IN. C’mon, it’s cute.

    • Haley Buchanan

The event is Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project 13th Annual Spring Picnic? So she’s kinda playing the IRL role of Councilwoman Knope. The outfit is cute, not as bridal as advertised, and venue appropriate. I giving Ms. Poehler-Knope the Bitter Kitten IN.

    • Jangle57

Agree that it’s on the bland side but it still looks good on her – IN

    • Richard Banger

IN! Business bridal is a thing that SHOULD exist. Also, she looks fantastic.

    • mcbishop

      In!

    • lucasuk82

In: everything fits well, I like the color story, and she looks comfortable in it. There is a disconnect between the style of the dress and jacket, but that’s a quibble.

    • holla

      In

    • in a pickle

In. The suit jacket is giving me a century 21 agent’s mother of the bride look, but the whole thing is overall attractive.

    • katiessh

IN! But I would have preferred that she somehow used the blue on the model.

    • livesarah

      Out.

    • theotherjdekay

Bringing the Pawnee realness – In!!

    • smh4748

In. But boy oh boy, she would have KILLED IT in the turquoise. (Seriously, if you have blue eyes, you know this! C’mon Amy!)

    • annla

In. It’s chic and she looks good.

    • Meri

In- it’s simple, but cute. Sometimes that’s enough.

    • Man Dala

IN. She looks elegant, sophisticated and glamorous. Go Leslie!

    • Michelle Gennari

      In! she looks great! :)

    • Mousentrude

I’m completely ambivalent. It’s bland but ultimately harmless so I can’t really justify an out. So I guess it’s in.

    • Fuchsiaforever

Out! Business Bridal is right :/

    • nicewilliams

      LOVING that hair!

    • ankali

IN. She looks so pretty and fresh.

    • mdcoon127

wrong jacket – better in the runway color and long coat – also different shoes

    • Kimberlini

IN She looks fab and her hair/makeup are perfect.

    • Sara McDarby

      In! Very cute!!!!!

    • Orange Girl

eh, out. I think she can do better. Like Tina Fey, no more grading on a curve with this one.

    • Columbinia

Out. This looks like someone who doesn’t like dressing up trying to dress up.

    • Pterodactyl111

      In.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Out, just too washed out on her, I like the jacket on her, but all is too pale, a darker something would make this sing…not yawn.

    • littlemac8

IN because I love her and she looks cute!

    • Tom Markiewicz

IN. Loving the subtly contrasting neutrals.

    • Sunshine16

Aw, come on boys! Give the girl an IN, she looks great, comfortable & happy.
