That’s a whole lot of dress. Not sure the black pumps work, or the ponytail. Great color, though.

  • didgerdoni

I am fairly certain my grandmother sewed this exact dress for my Barbie, back in the days of my long-gone youth. Ninny (as I stubbornly rechristened the poor woman) was a hell of a seamstress, and by rights I ought to love this, but I don’t. Too stiff? I don’t know, but I’m not feeling it. Hate the shoes.

  • Glam Dixie

I want to like this in theory, but I’m finding it difficult.

  • I love that it speaks to her heritage without being too costumey. I don’t like the hair or shoes, though.

  • marlie

It’s very pretty. I don’t love it, but I really like the color, and I like the gold detail. What throws it off for me is the shape of the skirt. I don’t think Frieda’s tall enough to really show off the hi-low aspect of the skirt.

    • kmk05

I don’t think it’s her height so much as the fact that it doesn’t seem like she knows what to do with the dress itself. She just looks awkward. I think the shape might be too much for her (reserved for more qualified clothes-wearers).

  • MilaXX

It’s pretty but it feels lacking somehow. Better earrings perhaps?

  • DesertDweller79

I like that she’s wearing it higher on her chest than the model. However, I’m not sure the bodies is proportioned correctly. Because when it is lifted up to the correct place on her chest, it makes the waist too high.

Otherwise, I like the color a lot. And it is nice that it references her culture without being a costume. But, it does seem a bit stiff. I’m wondering if the proportions were adjusted maybe it would make the dress seem like it flowed a bit better?

  • sugarkane105

She’s about six inches too short for that dress.

  • clatie

super gorgeous! although it is a millimeter away from bursting through the bodice.

  • barbarienne

I’m liking the trend for massive ballgowns. They may not all be awesome, but I love them as a switch from the slinky, high-slit sheath.

    • demidaemon

I do like this trend, too. Now if they would all wear fabulous fancy ballgowns….

  • kimmeister

She’s so beautiful, but I feel like her makeup is off. Like it’s overly contoured or something. I also think the color would be more flattering on her skin if it was outright orange rather than this salmon shade.

  • nannypoo

I like this dress for her. I don’t think I would like it on anyone else, but for her it’s perfect.

  • hughman

  • gabbilevy

Too bad the gown is fighting with the carpet. I don’t think we’re seeing anything in the correct colors here, and it’s throwing off the whole effect. From what I can see, though, I like.

  • Sarah

It’s too long to be hi-lo and too short to be a ballgown on her. If it went all the way down, it’d be better. As for the color, I actually think it is not doing her a lot of favors. Two or three shades darker, okay, but I feel like it is making her a bit sallow as is. Her head is gorgeous as always, and I like her ponytail.

    • connie238

I definitely agree about the color- not the best choice for her.

  • Janet B

    Lovely color for her.
She could use some nicer jewelry and 6 inches in height.

  • That poor bustier top is doing everything in its power to stay together. It really should not be pulling like that across her torso. But its one helluva dress for all that.

    • demidaemon

      Exactly what I said!

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I’m not feeling the ponytail, and she could have used a subtle gold necklace, but this is a gorgeous dress and the golden embellishment goes a long way in preventing her to melt with the red carpet.

  • Danielle

I really love the sideways hi-lo thing the skirt has going on.

  • ChelseaNH

The “show off my shoes” hem is too studied, and the shoes aren’t really worth the effort. Love the color but I’m not convinced it works with her skin tone, for some reason.

  • IAmJ

Not loving the hair but she is so gorgeous I have to let that slide.

  • Rhonda Shore

    This is splendid!

  • @Biting Panda

She seems to be having more fun with her choices lately.

  • greymain

was there a “wear a BIG dress” memo?????

  • MarissaLG

  • Wink

That’s a whole lotta dress, so the understated hair works. Nicely done.

  • jonnyf8

Why does she look so Kardashian here? Someething is off.

    • altissima

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it’s the gold trim?

  • B_C_J

She looks glorious in this gown. I love the gold embroidery. Her makeup is lovely. She is a gorgeous woman. I just wish her shoes were better. However she is definitely a winner in this dress.

  • myra

Anyone else think the brows are a bit too strong for her face?

    • livesarah

I think it’s more that the lack of colour in her lips unbalances her face… Her brows look great to me (as does she in this dress), but the makeup kind of bugs.

    • GillianHolroyd

Is that what it is? Her face looks different in the first couple photos. I thought maybe she’d had some work done.

      • myra

her brows are usually thinner, but here I think they look a bit too penciled in, especially near the bridge of her nose. It’s giving her a kardashianesque look that doesn’t really suit her. her features are too delicate for dramatic looks like that.

    • jilly_d

Yes, and I’ve noticed mega – brows on several celebs lately. I know major brows are a trend right now, but makeup artists need to realize they shouldn’t be visible from space.

  • GillianHolroyd

Some quibbles but I LOVE the color and the side train.

  • Imasewsure

Wow I think this does absolutely nothing for her and that’s hard to achieve

  • Mrs. O

I think it’s gorgeous. And I think she is wearing it very well. Nothing about her says, “Am I doing OK?” Not a big fan of the shoes, though. I don’t mind the ponytail, but I think her makeup is dire. Foundation too thick, eyebrows too harsh, eyes like two burn-holes in a blanket. The makeup artist gets a D from me.

  • FibonacciSequins

  • Qitkat

She’s very pretty in it, but she dropped her castanets somewhere.

  • KT

I love it!! GREAT color on her, dramatic, bold, flattering, and just a little bit different from standard ballgown fare. Her makeup looks gorgeous too. I do wish she were wearing strappy sandals instead of pumps, but that’s just a nitpick.

    • alyce1213

You said everything I wanted to, so thanks.

      • KT

        haha you’re welcome!

  • demidaemon

It’s a bit fancy quincenara, no? Not particularly loving anything but the headsuit.

  • Love the dress, but someone else needs to be wearing it. Needs more boobs, less waist.

  • Teddy

“And you can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week, so I guess you chose today.”

    • BuffaloBarbara

Sadly, I was looking at “great hairstyles for s/s 2014” (I was looking for an easy updo for an event)… and Glamour UK is all about the low ponytail. And hair “set” in waves by sleeping in braids. I think they all need to listen more closely to the plastics, sadly.

  • Oscar does the best gowns…. I really like the flange effect on the skirt…only thing I would have done differently would be to have added a dramatic pattern of boulliuon embroidery on that side of the under skirt to really “royal” it up!

  • bringbackbeatles

Absolutely stunning from top to bottom. Probably would have been better with a sandal than a pump, but how can you complaine everything else is so perfect!

  • phylora

  • StillGary

    Love it on her!

  • Mr. J.

Boy, Cannes is bringing out the best in quite a number of people….including her.

  • I love that she often chooses clothing with elements that recall traditional Indian dress, like the color and embroidery here. What I don’t love is this dress reminding me of what I call “Phyllis Nefler’s upside-down taco dress” from Troop Beverly Hills.

  • andi56

The bodice could do with a better fitting; the creasing is unfortunate.

  • quiltrx

She looks really pretty, but this is a bit of a case of “that dress is wearing you” for me. it’s a great dress, but I’m wondering if it needs someone more physically…is imposing the word I’m looking for? Anyway, she almost seems physically overwhelmed by its visual weight.

  • Miss wks

No, No, NO! You do not pose with the hand that is forced to SQUISH a fabulous design element of your gown. Switch up sides, woman!

  • Were there bulls released on that red carpet?

  • Jennifer Bober

She needs to learn how to work that kind of a skirt. There are ways to move to get the perfect dramatic drape of train, and she’s not doing it. I love the dress, but agree that the hair and shoes need to go.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I love the embroidery (?), and from the side, the hip-flounce looks good. From the front, it looks like someone left the flap of a box sticking out.

And I’m not loving hair this season AT ALL.

  • RCH

I think the shoes are nice with the dress, though they provide no contrast at all. I would have had the waistline lowered to her actual waist. (I don’t know the right terms for this, unfortunately).

  • lalahartma

    I likes it!

  • Little_Olive

Wow, I don’t love it. That is so not her color and it makes her look flat-chested.

  • Lucas

Love. That gown is breathtaking, and her styling is perfect. I think its a showstopper.

  • Angelfood

    I like the earrings
