Well. That’s something, all right.

If this was a gown, we’d probably love it. In fact, we thought it was gown the first time we saw it. Imagine our disappointment when we found out the truth of the matter.

The sleeves make it. They’re a great, eye-catching element. But the sheer yoke doesn’t look like it’s up to the task of holding that bodice up. The whole thing is straining and looks like it’s about to give way. She may be in possession of too much boob for this jumpsuit to handle.

Kinda hate the styling too. The straight, swept back hair is kind of severe-looking when this look could’ve used something a little lighter and more fun. Also, black pumps look like a terrible choice. Silver sandals, dear. Black nail polish. That would’ve been the way to go. And the jewelry looks kind of random.

Personally, we would’ve told her to forget it the first time she put this on, but if she insisted on wearing it, then we would’ve gone an entirely different way with it. Kudos to her for wearing something interesting, though.

We saw the Penny Dreadful pilot. That title’s half right.

It’s a Project Runway challenge where they had to interpret classic TV shows into looks. Clearly this contestant got The Flying Nun.

    • MarieLD

It would be better than some of the other inspiration challenges they’ve had.

    • lundibleu

I actually want to see that challenge now, though the producers would probably demand that it also had to be avant garde, couture and then chuck in a ready to wear look too. And then they’d give someone “I dream of Jeannie” just to see what happened.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You just know that at least one designtestant would not buy enough fabric so we’d be treated to a very cheeky flying nun.

  • KateMaryC

Pack that up and send it to Angelina Jolie, where it belongs.

    • Anna

Thank you for my morning laugh! Spot on!

    • kimmeister

I think she would have even more problems with too much boobage for the bodice to handle.

  • @Biting Panda

    Stupid Disqus.

  • @Biting Panda

If GOOP and KStew created and offspring, this would be she.

    • charlotte

Only that her name would probably be Cherry Pie Homemade Stew instead of Eva.

      • Jessica Freeman

Followed by a blog post of how they consciously made the decision about her name.

    • Have we seen GOOP wearing this? She was my first thought.

      • Frida

It looks like a top and skirt GOOP wore to an Iron Man 3 premiere. The skirt had some precariously-wide sheer panels down the sides…

      • Anna

I thought the same. This looks like the sheer Antonio Berardi she wore last year.

      • @Biting Panda

It’s reminiscent to her Antonio Berardi worn to Iron Man 3.

    • 3boysful

We think almost alike–I was thinking KStew and SJP.

      • Imma Mäder

I got SJP too – must be the eye makeup, which suits her about as well as SJP

  • I also watched the pilot and was underwhelmed.

    • Lucía Gavello

I was kind of looking forward to it since the trailers, but the comments have been so negative! Too bad 🙁

      • I mean it’s not terrible, just not that gripping. Shows can always get better though. I’ve stuck with SHEILD and it’s gotten much better..well not MUCH but a lot better.

        • Lucía Gavello

Oh, I’m still going to give it a try, I’m a hopeless serialized TV addict and I have a soft spot for Eva Green (not enough to go watch the new 300 movie though). I should catch up with SHIELD, I quit watching because I feared it would ruin Coulson for me.

      • formerlyAnon

Well, since it is unlikely to get brilliantly more clever and better acted and wonderful, *I’m* rooting for it to get truly, enormously dreadful, so I can laugh at it.

    • Kent Roby

Any show with “dreadful” in the title bears the responsibility to be beyond amazing to avoid the obvious criticism.

      • demidaemon

        So true.

  • JenniferA

I can’t see the outfit – too distracted by the eye makeup…

    • It’s really upsetting. Why is there so much black UNDER her eyes???

    • kimmeister

Exactly. Nothing wrong with heavy-lidded, downturned eyes, but if you have them, that’s not your makeup.

    • ccinnc

She has beautiful, striking eyes. They make her face IMHO. But this … It looks like she slept for hours in her makeup.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Eva Green has such beautiful eyes that she really doesn’t need that much of the smoky eye that’s been so much the thing.

    • fursa_saida

It’s so awful. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her face till I saw the closeup.

  • Jessica Freeman

Scary, it’s just scary. That’s what it is.

    • Sarah

If anything’s dreadful, it’s the abdominal region on that jumpsuit. So very Ed Grimley.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You just made me smile, thinking of Ed Grimley cavorting in this! I must say, I’m so excited to be wearing couture!

        • Sarah

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I must say, this jumpsuit is pulling a bit at the crotch, can I say that about couture(as Ed furtively glances around the room)?

    • smayper

Villainess in a James Bond movie. In the 70s.

      • Jessica Freeman

I agree, that would have been really awesome. Red carpet, not so much.

  • Kitten Mittons

I actually like the jumpsuit, mainly because of those sleeves. A gown would have been better, though.

It really truly looks like she just got out of the pool, though, smeared mascara and all.

  • Nope to the nopeness.

The pants are too long, she’s in need of support, and the swept back hair makes her look like she’s all forehead.

    • Rhonda Shore

Everything seems wrong about this outfit and i don’t love the sleeves either. Most people don’t look good in bright white, it’s just the way it is.

      • yep. Also the cuffs make those sheer sleeves hang awkwardly.

      • Kent Roby

The sleeves need to be a tad longer or shorter; I kinda love this look on the model (of course, she also has the benefit of appropriately-soft styling).

        • Rhonda Shore

The fabrics just don’t work well together.

    • Crystal

And all the weird sheerness up top looks dumb.

    • Also, visible zipper placket. Technically not a violation of my No Visible Foundation Garments rule, but generally I think garment infrastructure should be felt and not seen.

      • Its mostly because teh fabric is so sheer, and she’s not wearing anything opaque beneath. But I do agree.

      • Boulderista

That visible zipper placket is making my eyes twitch – it’s too high and too long and what actually happens if it’s unzipped? does the whole top half unwrap somehow so you can access the good china … or maybe it’s a fake placket? And why wouldn’t this garment have a side zip or a back zip? It’s the “Placket Dreadful”

  • sienna elm

    Vampire nun?

  • Nancer

I think that she needs new stylists. I can tell that she’s a beautiful woman, but all of the elements conspired to make her look severe and, frankly, odd. Better hair, better make up, a better outfit; come on, stylists! You’ve got great material to work with here, you should be ashamed for sending her out like this.

    • isn’t the severity the whole point though? following the dreadful theme…

      • Nancer

Well, it is severely dreadful, so there is that….

  • alyce1213

    No to everything.

  • hyperionic

She has a very unique face with hooded eyes which I guess makes her hard to make up but that eyeliner is not the way to go.

    • AnaRoW

She always does her makeup like that. I think she likes looking as though she as dark under-eye circles.

  • Anna

Please call your stylist from Casino Royale. You smouldered in that purple dress.

    That super-high waist is dreadful.

    • smayper

So funny! Didn’t realize she was in that, and I was just commenting on the Bond vibe I was getting! Was she evil in it?

      • Anna

No, she was the love interest/female lead. Although she would make an excellent Bond Villainess.

  • MilaXX

I’m not sure either of the model look work, although I would love to have seen her try the mullet dress. I do like the jewelry. I think a an antiqued metallic shoe would have been a better choice. The hair is too severe. Something a little softer would have helped balance things out.

I’ve been waiting for reviews of this show before checking it out. I guess I can pass on this one.

  • leahpapa

Here’s what. If you’re going to create/produce/write/direct/star in a show with any kind of negative word/phrase in the title, you’d better be darn sure it’s amazing; otherwise, the critical pans write themselves. Anybody remember “Emily’s Reasons Why Not” (to watch this show)? “Very Bad Things” (to spend your $10 on)? I can just see “‘Penny Dreadful’ is just that” appearing in a newspaper TV column next week.

Oh, also: She was hawt in “Casino Royale” – can’t figure out why her public appearances are so frequently awkward.

    • Kent Roby

Oops, I just wrote a shorter less-clever comment similar to yours. So, um, yeah, what you said!

    • porcupie

I’ve actually read some pretty good reviews for it (although I haven’t seen it myself). Still, they’ve all, without exception, used some half-baked pun in the headline. It’s like reviewers can’t resist it.

  • marlie

Nope. I don’t like any of it.

  • gretchtenebro

Love her but she needs to go back to her Dior and McQueen (and the like) wearing days. She owns those kinds of looks. Been following her career since it started and never would have I imagined her to wear something as basic and snorefest as goddamn Elie Saab. She’s worn back to back Elie Saab for her recent US premieres. She needs to change her stylist.

For what it’s worth, the reviews have been great. Don’t know where some of you are reading your reviews from.

  • Kristin

Oh no! I was looking forward to Penny Dreadful! 🙁 Argh. The sads.

Eva is gorgeous. There’s something about this that doesn’t quite work for me, though. I like the dress version better, even with that dumb high-low hem. I think there’s something in the zipper placket area (is that a real zipper placket, or just made to look like one?) that seems bulky.

  • Alyssa

I feel like she thematically dressed…as in “the show is called Penny Dreadful, so I shall dress dreadfully”. I do really like the sleeves, but that’s about it.

    • Crystal

Maybe that’s the point! Maybe it’s a themed thing and we just didn’t know about it.

This is like when I read horrifying news stories and then have to convince myself I’m reading The Onion in order to continue on with my day.

  • Crystal

  • CT14

Ugh. I really want the Brits to stop it with the black eyeliner all around the eyes. It just makes everyone’s eyes so small and icky.

She should have gone for the dress version.

    • marlie

Actually, she’s French, but her eye makeup DOES suck.

      • demidaemon

Maybe it’s a European thing. And the French have been historically intertwined with the British.

  • empath

The helmet hair and heavy eyeliner makes her look drawn and kind of depressed. Don’t care for the jumpsuit, but really can’t get much beyond the face. “Sad Giraffe” were the first two words in my head when I saw her.

  • StelledelMare

I actually quite liked the pilot and am looking forward to seeing more. It has a very League of Extraordinary Gentlemen/From Hell look about it which I like. I’m interested to see where it goes. That said, after seeing the latest 300 film, I will automatically think nothing she wears will be as good as the costumes she wore in that movie (really her character is what made that movie watchable).

  • Qitkat

If I had all the powers, that gorgeous emerald-like ring would jump through my computer and land on my finger, right this second.

    • Kitten Mittons

      Isn’t it beautiful?? Want.

    • KinoEye

That’s the best part about this getup. Love it!

  • cocohall

I’m getting “Madame Tussaud’s waxwork of Angelina Jolie in Palm Desert with the AC system down for maintenance and the figures are beginning to melt” realness from this look. I don’t know from Eva Green, so this isn’t personal dearie. But when you’ve got the word “Dreadful” dancing behind you, one must up one’s game.

  • Jacob Bowen

What the hell is wih the fly on the pants?!?! Does she WANT the attention brought to her pikachu?!?!?

  • SewingSiren

Yes I agree that as a gown it would be much better. As it is …….dreadful.

  • Coleslaw McGraw

Clearly an outfit you can’t sit in because the little creases and wrinkles around the crotch are super noticeable.

  • This ensemble makes her head look small.

  • ballerinawithagun

What has happened to Elie Saab???

  • ojosazules

Eva’s goal on the red carpet, seemingly, is to look odd. She succeeds every time. If it wasn’t for the movies, nobody would know how lovely she is.

  • Danielle

She’s channeling her Jacqueline Bouchard character.

  • decormaven

Flashback to “The Outer Limits” – maybe the students visiting the museum in “The Duplicate Man.” Was the stylist shooting for a futuristic look? Doesn’t compute.

  • BrooklynBomber

That’s some of the saddest looking eye makeup & hair styling I’ve ever seen. As in, she looks sad.

  • the_valkyrie

Dang, I wanted this show to be good because I found the premise interesting.

    • Supernumerary

I watched it and found it okay. Eva Green tends to become the focal point of everything she’s in (whether that’s intentional or not), and that saved the first episode for me when Josh Hartnett did his boring thing, and Timothy Dalton tried but didn’t quite deliver. I’m going to reserve judgment until Billie Piper’s character makes her entrance, and just assume it’ll go onto the guilty pleasure list until then.

  • boweryboy

She should have stuck with the dress version because that wrinkly crotch is doing her no favors.

  • Julie

I like the ear cuffs. That’s about it.

  • Jessie Melcher Brown

Feels very Morticia Adams to me.

    • ktr33

      She should BE so lucky!

  • The “DREADFUL” in title says it all!

  • ktr33

I *hate* it, but it’s not boring, so credit for taking a risk. But she’ll need more guidance in her next risky endeavor. Did I say I hate it?

  • EEKstl

What a difference the correct styling would have made here.

  • Imasewsure

For some reason I’m envisioning this monstrosity on Christina Hendricks. Not because it would look good on her (although it might) but because it would probably look bad (with horrible styling and orthopedic shoes too). Is that wrong? Yes but whatevs…

  • Clash D

I love how the backdrop itself is passing judgement on her outfit.

  • Shawn EH

Somebody hide the cutout skirt one from Kristen Wiig!

  • Do you hear the drums, Fernando?

    • Shawn EH

      ABBA and the Banshees!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I am distracted by how long and noticeable the fly is on those pants. And her head is too severe looking. When I look at this my eye goes from her forehead to her fly and then back again.

  • Terri Terri

All I can see is the hideous eye make-up.

  • bluefish

Penny Dreadful = Timothy Dalton on my TV screen = Happiness. She’s a lovely woman but this whole look is pretty awful.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

    It’s a semi-formal look for Morticia Addams.

  • smh4748

I think she was trying for “Bad-Ass Nun,” which is certainly an interesting concept. :-

The worst part of this is how miserable she looks in it. If you’re going to wear something weird/unorthodox, I think you really need to sell it, and force people to think that it might be working. She’s not doing that at all.

  • KT

I hate it. Props for not being boring, but this just looks like a repurposed nun’s habit to me.

Also agree that the styling is all wrong. Her style tends to be too costumey, and her film roles are too cartoon-y. She’s like the theater girl who can’t go for one minute without being at LADY MACBETH LEVELS OF DRAMA, BITCHES. Would love to see her and Shailene Woodley swap styles for a day – just for my own amusement.

  • FibonacciSequins

She looks so sad to be wearing this.

  • holla

don’t know why, but a lot of her looks are very severe. Would go with different hair on this.

  • MannahattaMamma

She looks more like a vampire here then she did when she ways playing a vampire. Sheesh.

  • I’m getting a distinct burned-out, this-close-to-jumping-to-the-other-side superhero vibe from this look.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She either looks like a nun who is rebelling by wearing pants or an evil queen cursed to wear evil, ill-fitting clothing and to reveal her ears. I find it off-putting and unpleasant all around.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Poor Eva. This is a no, on the clothing front, and definitely on the hair front. Just not good.

  • demidaemon

I’m confused. And kind of frightened by this design. It’s both vulgar and inconvenient.

  • Trickytrisha

    All I see is ears.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Oooooh, so the show is bad? I was very curious about watching it. I love a good horror yarn, but it’s a difficult genre to do well. If TLo gives it the thumbs down, that makes me significantly less interested.

  • Fraggle

I kind of like the idea of it, but the details are somehow wrong… shoes, hair, make up… oh Eva darling… I love you for taking risks. But better luck next time. (And yes she has too much boob for this one as it seems. But she’s so beautiful.)

  • I think the look is super fabulous. The hair and make-up are a catastrophy, tho.

  • LadyVimes

Hmm. Give it to Cate Blanchett.

  • Jecca2244

everything she wears ages her. IMO.

  • julnyes

Oh no, the show isn’t good? I was thinking about giving it a try.

  • formerlyAnon

Well, disappointing mini review of PD. I was hoping it’d be good – or at least entertainingly, over-the-top awful.

The torso & legs are too wide for her height. With different proportions there, this would have been awesome, I think.

  • altissima

There are many things not right about this outfit. Is it just me, or does it look as though her eye makeup is on upside down ?

  • JynxTheCat

    she has Doonesbury eyes
