Elizabeth Olsen for Marie Claire UK Magazine

Non twin Olsen sister Elizabeth gets the Manic Pixie Dream Girl styling, which, in 2014 means Miu Miu and Carven. They’re the go-to’s for quirky-girl looks.

On still riding the subway and enjoying being totally unrecognizable: “I hope that never changes. I’m never bothered anywhere. Only occasionally someone will say, ‘Have we met before? You look so familiar.'”

On her idol Michelle Pfeiffer: “‘I never had a heart-throb or a band I loved, but I had Michelle Pfeiffer, so I tried to copy what my friends would do and had magazine pictures cut out in frames. She was the reason I wanted to be an actor.”

On her upcoming nuptials: “I’m relaxed about it, but I am excited and planning ideas because it’s fun It’s just like throwing a party to celebrate life. I love being in a relationship a lot.”

On not planning a joint wedding with sister Mary-Kate Olsen: “I just told her she gets to pick a date first.”

It all suits her perfectly, even though we’d never call her a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She always looks way too tired for anyone to call her manic. Depressed Pixie Dream Girl doesn’t quite have the same ring to it and besides, it doesn’t fit. Serious Pixie Dream Girl doesn’t quite make sense. Thoughtful Pixie Dream Girl? It gets harder and harder to put our celebrities in little boxes, darlings. We’re just gonna go with Quirky Pixie.

She looks like someone coming down from a manic episode. But I think she looks good.

I’m more entertained by the imaginary scenario in my head in which her sisters absolutely hate her.

  • Coleslaw McGraw

She really is the pretty olsen. I love that little pink outfit on her.

    • Sobaika

I think the twins would be pretty if they, you know, bathed and maybe played around with color.

      • mshesterp

And smiled once in a while. And chose outfits that actually fit them, that they weren’t swimming in. The whole family is just so…buzzkill (for me, Elizabeth less so than the twins).

        • lundibleu

And scrapped the overdone eye makeup.

  • Capt. Renault

    Said Michelle Pfeiffer, “Who?”

    • lamamu

That’s the thing about adoration: the adored don’t necessarily know their worshippers by name. Michelle Pfeiffer simply accepts it as her due and gets on with her day. (As it should be.)

  • MarissaLG

Styling on that red sweater/green skirt combo is terrible. Just cause clothes are expensive, doesn’t make ’em cute.

    • 3boysful

    • Meg0GayGuys6

And does anyone not think Christmas?

      • melisaurus

        I think Christmas Tree.

But really the skirt and sweater combo are making me think of Ms Geiss from Clueless, and the pink dress is Cher, since I started a theme I guess the first dress would be Amber’s…

  • Sobaika

  • MilaXX

She looks cute, but I guess is it type. It all feels very Zoey Deshanel

    • Shawn EH

They had to do something with the brunette dye job for the upcoming Avengers movie I guess.

    • fursa_saida

They definitely gave her Zooey Deschanel’s hair.

      • smayper

Agreed. And it irks me. I adore her cheekbones, though.

  • Glam Dixie

Sleepy Pixie Dream Girl. I want that beaded fringe skirt. I have no idea what I’ll do with it, but I want it anyway.

    • Qitkat

Imagine doing the Charleston wearing it!

    • http://melaniesuzanne.blogspot.com/ Melanie Suzanne

Agreed on the skirt. Where would I wear it? EVERYWHERE.

  • LadyVimes

That cover dress (coat?) is lovely. Very mod. The rest I could do without. The red/green outfit reads “Christmas ornament” to me.

  • Mazenderan

My head scrambled Peggy Olsen and Elisabeth Moss together, and that’s who I was expecting to see when I clicked the link.

The pose with the beaded skirt looks remarkably silly. Also, the skirt and top don’t work together.

    • SugarSnap108

That pose is ridiculous, leaving aside the fact that she’s wearing a green beaded skirt with Grandma Miu Miu’s Christmas sweater.

      • Mazenderan

I think it make her look a bit like she reeeally has to pee.

        • Sarah

The “Gotta Pee” is so ubiquitous a pose, yet it never looks good. So weird.

  • kimmeister

She’s looking a bit like Rose Byrne on the cover.
The green Miu Miu skirt clearly looks better not moving than in motion. It’s a bit like a lampshade at a psychic’s.

  • Anna

Um…I guess I like it better than her latest red carpet looks?

I will never understand bed-head. It maybe looked good on Meg Ryan for like, 5 minutes, in the ’90s.

    • ktr33

      I think they’re going for a messy Brigitte Bardot 1/2 up-do? Maybe?

      • Anna

I maybe get it in the first photo.

  • Danielle

Whatever, I’ll take it over the dreadful “Lolita” styling magazines are favoring for stars her age.

    • Karen Belgrad

She’s actually 25, They tend to go the Lolita route with the 16 yr olds, like Elle, just to up the ick factor.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

  • Karen Belgrad

Add black tights and it is truly Zoey D’s editorial.

  • madge

i am feeling that hair color on her, though. the dirty blonde i’ve seen her with before just washes her out.

    • random_poster

      It looks fantastic on her.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        I agree. Beautiful hair.

  • JauntyJohn

If I ever open a boutique — of any sort, from coffee to caftans — I shall call it “The Quirky Pixie.”

If you need to feel better today, pretend to answer a phone call and say out loud in a super cheerful voice: “Thank you for calling the Quirky Pixie! This is Summer speaking! How may I help you?”

    I feel better already.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Yes, but you shouldn’t let go of the idea of naming your place “From Coffee to Caftans.”

      • JauntyJohn

I will pray to Allan Carr, the Patron Saint of Caftans, to help make it so.

      • FibonacciSequins

        I’d patronize.

      • Danielle

I need to go back to bed. I read “From Coffins to Caftans”.

        • kimmeister

That would be a diverse range of offerings indeed.

  • Sarah

I had a flannel nightgown when I was a kid that looked just like that red blouse. I wore it on Xmas. Which makes sense with that skirt. I suddenly crave gingerbread.

    • Alyssa

Well now since you mentioned it, I’m craving gingerbread too!

      • smayper

Mmmmmm….there was a place in Oakland called Ginger Island that made gingerbread (cake like, not hard) and served it warm with (moaning) ginger whipped cream. I dream about it.

  • ktr33

All I know is, I want those orange miu miu boots very very badly. I also know the red and green is a disaster.

  • Kate Andrews

Not too wild about the red blouse and beaded skirt, but I love the cover look!

  • Emily Giovanni

Oooooh I love her brows and hair color. She’s never looked so pretty! (*ignoring the red and green outfit*)

  • @Biting Panda

I like. It reminds me of the scene from ‘Gia’ when the magazine editor is wanting someone “carnivorous” is the word I believe she used. I need to look up the scene, but hopefully you know what I mean.

    • KinoEye

One of my favorite scenes in the movie. They’re sifting through headshots of cookie cutter blondes, and then BAM! There’s Angie in all her glory.

      • smayper

I JUST saw that movie for the first time, with my son (who has great eclectic taste in movies). It made me go and look up images of the real Gia, who was unbelievably fierce. Really, the definition of the term. TLo should do some model retrospectives some time…we could drool over classic clothes and styling.

  • pattyw

Dead ringer for Shannon Doherty in the third look.

  • E.Nelson

I don’t think she looks tired – I think she just has a case of perma-bedroom eyes. Like, she looks sleepy-sexy, not exhausted.

It always throws me off because her sisters’ eyes are lamp-like. In any case, I love the styling here. She’s a minx! I never would’ve known.

Sidenote: anyone with any doubt about her should go watch Martha Marcy May Marlene. She’s astonishing.

    • Qitkat

She’s astonishing in M4, but the film left me feeling disturbed and weirded out. Which I suppose was the intent.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It was a very creepy movie, but I thought she did a great job.

      • smayper

Yup. Me too, exactly. The actor (whose name escapes me) who plays the cult leader, is AMAZING. I loved him in Deadwood, in which he plays a sweet, trustworthy guy. He has some serious acting chops.

    • ankali

You aren’t wrong; she was amazing, and I hope she gets some similarly awesome material to work with again soon.

  • tired_mommy

The cover reminds me of 80’s Carol Alt

    • martha

      That’s who she looks like!

  • demidaemon

Love the cover shot. Hate the other shots. Lame, and the pink dress is pretty ugly.

  • decormaven

Love the cover outfit- the coloring is suited to her complexion. The pink dress with sheer jacket needs a little more oomph to sell it to me.

  • Nancer

LOVE the green skirt, though I am puzzled by the red sweater with it…

  • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Amazed at how good the cover dress looks on her. I never would have guessed its potential with the model’s outfit.

  • muelonil

    Lethargic pixie dream girl.

  • elirt

    Emo pixie?

  • fursa_saida

Chick, if you don’t want to be recognized, why on earth did you sign up for Avengers 2? As Scarlet Witch, no less, one of the coolest superheroes? (I mean, if I could play Scarlet Witch, I probably would, because SCARLET WITCH, but I’m just saying.)

  • elirt

She looks like Victoria Beckham in the 2nd photo.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

How about Cerebral Pixie Dream Girl? (although now that I write that, it seems like the name of a breakfast cereal). Transcendent? Meditative? Thoughtful? (Sifting through mental thesaurus here……..)

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Flatulent Pixie?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

That third outfit is just hurting my eyes-fug to the max. The first two I like, especially the print.

  • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

Her look defies description and memory. I’m not surprised she doesn’t get recognized.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’ll always feel a little odd watching her rise to fame. We attended NYU simultaneously. She was going to be in my Russian history class but dropped it to go shoot a movie. She was my roommate’s Tisch classmate for at least one year. Elizabeth Olsen has Hollywood at her feet, whereas my (very talented) roommate is working at a bowling alley =

  • Scott Cooper

Someone has to wrestle the title from the withering hands of Zooey Deschanel.

  • FibonacciSequins

Is it me? I find nothing of interest here. She has pretty hair. That’s all I got.

  • Dany

I actually love that she’s self aware enough to realize that she isn’t exactly A list as of yet. I also love her in M4, she has the chops that her sisters don’t (or pretend that they don’t.) She seems lovely. Especially when you consider that there are celebrities like Ms. Goop out there who think that their criticizers are waging a war on them ** massive eyerolls***

  • Little_Olive

I like her better than Emma Roberts. I don’t know why I had to go and make that association, but there. Also, she does not look all that Olson.

Cute editorial, except that they could have done better with thad third outfit.

  • MartyBellerMask

  • marlie

I think she looks pretty great in all of these pictures, though in the first one, she looks a little like Lily Collins (not a bad thing, per se, just not herself).

  • TwiddlyStun

No matter the styling, there should be a rule against pulling a shirt down to cover your crotch – and here it is totally unnecessary! That is a toddler move typically followed by lifting the hem overhead and those moves will RUIN your garment. (Love, Mom – not yours, but there it is.)

  • Sophie

TWhat’s going on in that last picture? It’s a really weird pairing in my opinion.

  • Zuber

I really like her on the cover.

  • understateddiva

I know it probably fits her personality, but I don’t think this America’s sweetheart stuff suits her looks. With those heavy-lidded eyes I’d love to see more of a Bridget Bardot treatment (this is hinting at that, but stopping short).

  • quiltrx

Well, if folks are going by that cover picture, it’s no wonder she doesn’t get recognized! They’ve really done some weird mess to her face there.

  • JynxTheCat

I thought it was Lily Collins on the cover.

  • Fuchsiaforever

What is so special about that pink Carven dress? I don’t get it. Styling so bad in this magazine. Mediocre Marie Claire. Pffft.

  • altermyego

Aren’t the orange lace-up boots that the first model is wearing the same boots Katy Perry was wearing in her show but in purple?

  • Michelle Gennari

She’s a very cute child. Much sweeter than those two ‘droids she has for sisters. They always look so lifeless. She’s got a spark about her.

  • Accademia di Moda

We think Elizabeth looks stunning! These Miu Miu outfits are fun and lively, perfect for a young woman!
