Dianna Agron in West Hollywood

Posted on May 14, 2014

This is a super-cute look, but whoever makes the style decisions for her tends to always make the same mistake each time.

Tick-tock, kittens. You have until the bottom of this post to figure out what it is.

Cute shoes and dress, first off. They really suit her. But with these street promenades, she always looks over-styled to some extent. Sometimes wildly so, and sometimes just a little. For us, this time, it’s the bag. And it’s not the first time she’s carried a bag that really didn’t go with the look. It’s like she gets access to tons of free stuff, but enough thought isn’t put in to how and when to wear them. This makes us think she’s dressing herself for these street looks, picking from the pile of things offered to an actress like her.

Dianna, as your imaginary gay uncles, we’re telling you, girl: you got bad bag instincts. This outfit needs something more playful, colorful and casual than that ladies-who-lunch thing you’ve got hanging off you. We don’t think bags and shoes should match, but we do think they dictate to each other the range they should be working in. Casual canvas shoes and a bag with a gold chain strap? Not on the same day, sweetie.

Ladies, how do you keep up with your STUFF? Is it like a dump and transition? I wonder how tough that is for the celebs.

      • Danielle

Elaborate! Do you mean do we switch bags so often?

      • Sobaika

80% I have one bag l lug around that is practically the size of my torso. I have a teeny tiny clutch thing I use for going out that holds my cell phone, a credit card, and… that’s it.

      • MilaXX

I bag switch on the regular. Most times I pack the night before to make sure I don’t forget anything. I have a couple of small cross body bags for going places where I need to be hands free like the museum or if I only want to carry the bare minimum like the gym.

        • random_poster

For me “bare minimum to the gym” means putting my driver’s license into that little pocket at the top of my workout pants and hanging up my car keys on a hook once inside. Thank goodness for those pockets.

          • MilaXX

I’m a little more high maintenance than that. Bare minimum is wallet, keys, epi-pen & cell phone.

            • Lower L

I used to carry purses only rarely, using my pockets to carry what few things I needed, until I had to start carrying an Epi-Pen at age 30. And even now that I’m used to carrying a purse, I have a hard time finding ones that are small yet still fit an Epi-Pen.

        • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Same here. I have two black bags, a red bag, a purple bag, a turquoise bag, and a green bag. I switch to match my outfits. I also have a small collection of vintage purses that I roll out on those occasions when I just need money, ID, a lipstick and keys.

      • random_poster

I can’t keep up. I have one black bag that I use for everything because I have no desire or patience to switch it out. It’s black because it’s neutral enough to go with the majority of my outfits. The only time I ever change it is if I’m dressing up and want something more formal. I guess I’m too practical to be a celebrity.

        • barbarienne

Same here. I love purses and I’ll get spendy on them (not insane spendy, but Coach-consumer-level spendy), but I can do that because I only use one at a time for months (or even years, if I really, really like it). It holds everything I need, it’s always neutral, and works with my general style of dressing.

On the rare occasion when I have to dress up for realz, I’ll do the minimalist switch and put the bare essentials (driver’s license, credit card, cash) into a business-card holder. That plus cell phone can both go in a pocket or my cleavage.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

I opt for a cross-body bag most of the time because I ride the subway and need two hands free. I have five, one for each season which I change quarterly plus a black one because black is essential and is the New York “school color”. I have one shoulder bag that I didn’t need but it followed me out of the store. I use it when I’m visiting family and friends in other states. (They have seen this same bag for years, but it’s still like new and I love it.)

      • kimmeister

I use a different bag to go to work every day. I move my wallet, keys, phone, and sunglasses (which also vary) every day. Most of my bags also have things like feminine products, tissue, and a small nail file tucked into the zippered compartment.

        • mixedupfiles

I have a little toiletries/makeup pouch that moves along with the wallet and keys etc, but I don’t change that often.

        • MilaXX

I have lip balms in every bag. In my wallet I have safety pins, and a nail clipper that has a file attached.

          • kimmeister

Yes, I have safety pins, bandages, and a spare house key in wallet. My car is the repository for things like lip balm, hairbrush, mints, nail clipper, etc.

            • MilaXX

I do the spare key in the wallet as well. It has served me well more times than I care to admit.

        • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I have a zippered makeup/pharmacy bag, a zippered hard candy/name badges bag, a pencil/pen/paperclips zippered case, a phone case, and a billfold, so it’s easy to switch out my handbags.

      • lunchcoma

I have three bags I use regularly, and a lot of the items in them are duplicated. I have a few pairs of cheap sunglasses and a few coin purses, for instance. I have to shift my wallet and my phone, but it’s not as if my phone is permanently in my bag anyway.

      • Lori

I’m one of those people who rarely switches bags because I don’t have the patience for moving stuff around, but my mom was a purse switcher. She had a couple small organizer bag things that she used for most of her stuff that made the switches easier.

      • Synnae

I cycle everywhere and I always carry a lot of stuff (wallet, phone, tons of keys, gum, fruit, box of veggies, nuts, umbrella, occasionally laptop and work files) so for the past year I have pretty much been using a big sturdy black Liebeskind leather cross-body bag for my day-to-day life.

However for going out, or a particular outfit or activity, I will change bags. What goes in it, depends on what I need and more importantly how much it fits. I have found over the years that I am not a big fan of shoulder bags so even most of my little clutches have straps long enough to make it a cross-body bag.

That said, my most expensive bag (by a mile and then some) is my Alexander Wang Robyn bucket bag with a draw string closing. It looks gorgeous but it is indeed an unpractical bucket with no inside pockets, I spend ages scrambling for one tiny item.the moment I put more in it than phone, keys and wallet. But every time I look at it, I fall in love with it again so I just put up with all its annoying features.

      • kfizz

I have a drawer in my desk where my daily stuff lives, so I empty my bag into it at the end of the day, put the bag back in my closet. I pick something to go with each outfit. I’ve got 3 biggish purses, a relatively stylish computer bag for when I need my laptop, and a slew of little clutches and things.

      • semirose

I got sick of constantly forgetting stuff so I finally just invested in a fab bag that fits all my stuff and is adorable and stopped switching for daily use. It really was worth it. I do keep things like lip balm and gum and other small essentials in most of my bags I use when I go out and just toss in wallet/keys/phone.

      • tereliz

I keep the same everyday bag for about three months and then either buy a new one or decide to move an old one back into the rotation. I have a few clutches that will fit my wallet/keys/lippy, but I tend to use the same bag day after day. There’s just too much stuff in it to switch it out every day or so!

    • Rhonda Shore

That bag is just ugly and it skews old. The dress sure is cute though, love those colors.

    • Danielle

Oh, I don’t know. I’d love the bag if it was a neon green or teal.

      • MilaXX

It’s not the color, it’s the hardware. The chains strap is too prissy for such a casual look.

        • demidaemon

That was what I thought as well. The chain doesn’t fit with the mood of the outfit.

    • 3boysful

I like the bag, but it’s too buttoned-up for this casual outfit. She probably thought: “Tan, OK, that’ll do” without regard to style/feel.

      • Rhonda Shore

        Tan is so meh…

    • SewingSiren

I love the flat casual shoes with the casual summer dress. Agree about the bag. Too prissy. Apparently a lot of the stars have “bag” deals with manufacturers and it costs them style wise.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

She strikes me as retro in her sensibilities: covered up and very put together in a manner of speaking. In that sense, I’m not surprised her bags are often too fancy.

    • MilaXX

I guessed the bag. It’s the chain handle. This is the time to carry one of those vintage Coach bags. The all leather ones. A more current designer would be Micheal Kors. Otherwise this is a cute, youthful look.

      • decormaven

I’ll loan my Coach bag. Glad to help out.:-)

    • titaness25

Those shoes look dingy and sized to fit her father.

    • padma sallah

The dress is really cute. I kind of wish she had gone with different shoes though. A pair of strappy flats would have gone with the dress’s summery vibe. And yes, change that mismatched bag in for one of those cloth tote bags and everything would be amazing!

      • kimmeister

That dress is begging for sandals!

        • padma sallah

Yes, sandals in silver, white or blue would have complemented the dress perfectly. These sand shoes seem better suited to jeans or shorts.

        • Constant Reader

I agree. The shoes are really cute, but I’d prefer sandals with this dress.

    • PlethoraofBooks

I think part of it is that she feels the urge to show off ALL THE THINGS she owns… and does a poor job of choosing/styling herself.

    • Anna

Love the whole outfit, even the bag (but not with this outfit). Perhaps give Reese a call for tutorials regarding how and which bags to deploy for street promenades.

    • MW

A cute bright satchel would have made this look. It’s an adorable dress though.

      • kimmeister

        Coral would have been adorable!

    • http://musingsonmtn.blogspot.com AppGal

That’s a J.Crew dress, fyi. I have it and love it.

      • random_poster

        It’s totally cute!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Yeah the bag doesn’t go, but I don’t like the shoes either. I think it’s the tan, if they were white they wouldn’t bother me so much.

    • http://ayearofmommyhood.blogspot.com/ Tabby_abby

Heretic here, I don’t mind the bag with this dress. But sweet lord, those shoes are fugly. They make her legs look stumpy. I think other flats even Chucks or TOMS would make this look so much better.

      • majorbedhead

That was my thought, too. A cute sandal or flat would have been a better choice. Or even an espadrille. Something that doesn’t read beach shoe.

      • ktr33

I had the same comment about the chucks!

    • StarburstLady

She’s really into the kind of bags my elderly Southern Belle grandmother would have suggested for a “young lady”.

    • Darva Sutra

My guess was random accessories. Cute dress but everything with it seems off, including (sorry, uncles) the shoes.

    • Synnae

It’s the shoes that bug the hell out of me. Apart from being fug, if it is warm enough to go sleeveless, show your toes.
Also, I like the bag itself, but I think the strap is too long with this dress, had it ended at waist height it would have looked better. Add nice sandals and there you are.
One more thing though, I wish the dress – which is mega cute in itself – would have ended just below her knees, it would have looked more flattering on her.
And looking at the pictures again, I HATE those shoes period. They are just not flattering.

    • AnaRoW

This is one of those occasions when the post and comments have gone way over my head. I’ve read the explanations for why the bag doesn’t work but I’m still confused. Is that bag considered fancy? Is that why it’s not working?

      • padma sallah

The thing is that bag does not match up. Her dress, shoes and shades/sunglasses indeed this low-key casual look. The bag is something you’d take when you put on a pair of skinnies, a cute blouse, jacket etc etc.

        • Synnae

The dress can be dressed both up and down – just not at the same time ;-)

          • semirose

Exactly! Which is why I thought the sin was the shoes and not the bag. Probably because I think the bag is cuter than the shoes.

            • Synnae

Actually I was with you – I didn’t mind the bag but lost it with the shoes. They are just fug.

    • MK03

Those shoes do not belong with that dress.

      • Kate Andrews

Yeah. That’s what sticks out to me the most.

    • boweryboy

      I guessed right!

    • snarkykitten

Huh. I would have guessed the shoes. They need a pair of skinny jeans and a big boxy top.

      • ktr33

Me too. Although I can see how the bag doesn’t go, the shoes throw everything off. Not flattering, and I’m not against sneaks with sundresses at all. Just not these.

    • amanda siegelson

i’m so excited that i got the question correct – but i agree with the general consensus that them shoes be fugly!

    • quiltrx

Soludos rule, but those aren’t the cutest pair I’ve ever seen. That dress, however, is adorable.
I didn’t even notice the purse, so I didn’t guess right. But yes, that (particularly with the chain) is a “rich bitch” purse to my eye. Not a “cute-outfit-like-early-90s-Meg-Ryan” look of a bag.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Considering how often she gets it wrong, I actually like this.

    • B_C_J

I also don’t like the shoes. The dress is too pretty & too feminine for canvas footwear.

    • ktr33

very very cute dress, disagree with many about the shoes. I think they’re a dud. Someone with her own sense of style might’ve gone for navy Converse low-tops, and sold the dress with more personality. And the bag goes with a suit to an office.

      • Imasewsure

Love the shoes but definitely not with this dress so I am with you. Shoes are a needle scratch along with the bag

        • largishbearishAtlish

agreed the dress is perfect summer-y, light and colorful!

    • stayl

Dress is by J.Crew. It’s their photo floral dress.

      • osu86

I was just thinking, I can spot a J.Crew dress a mile away. Covet.

    • frannyprof

      Hate hate hate the shoes.

    • Jacob Bowen

I think the bag and shoes are really cute, and TOTALLY agree they don’t go together, but I would keep the bag.

    • KendraMR

I actually gasped when I saw the shoes. They’re cute, but wrong from that dress.

    • MaryMcClelland

Man I just think this is unflattering and juvenile.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Work it while she has it- the ratings for the season finale of Glee (yes, it IS still on…I had no idea) were VERY low… um, is she still ON the show?? making an assumption here…

    • nannypoo

Dang, I was so sure it was those atrocious shoes that I didn’t even notice the bag, which now that I see it I agree is also atrocious.

    • Susan Velazquez

Really? It’s the shoes I thought that didn’t go. Maybe some cute silver sandals instead.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

When we have these little pop quizzes, and I get it right, is it sad that it fills me with so many triumphant feelings and my first thought is, ‘oh, TLo will be so proud of me!’

    • webslice33

bag is cute..the shoes need to go..

    • MannahattaMamma

I came to this photo from the Cate Blanchett style goddess white gown picture. It’s like I fell through the earth’s atmosphere and landed in, I dunno, Detroit. Which all props to DeeTroy and all that, but THUD, Diana Agron, THUD.
