Diane Kruger in Giambattista Valli Couture at the 2014 Peabody Awards

Posted on May 21, 2014

We’re still stumbling around in a post Mad Style stupor, so let’s do this quick n. dirty-like.

Y’know? It’s just weird enough to make us forget our dislike of mullet hems and pseudo-bustles. Yeah, it’s weird, but that’s a gorgeous fabric and it’s beautifully tailored. Plus, she’s exactly the gal who can pull off a weird dress like this.

The question put before you is whether or not she can pull off those toothpaste-colored shoes with it. Yes? No? Interesting, but a little focus-pulling, we’d say.

THIS is the Diane that I defend again and again. Would I wear it? Hell no. Am I a thin, icy, blonde? LOL Hellllll no.
But this is all kinds Pacey’s Girl and I love it! Even with the minty fresh shoes. (Pink or metallic would have been so obvious, it would be a disappointment, white would have crushed my soul.)

  • Scimommy

She’s gorgeous but mullet hems have to go away. Soon.

  • Victor Beiramar Diniz

    a little too ice-skating-champions-gala…

  • sienna elm

    Her dress has a tail!

    • sienna elm

It would look so much better if it were all closer to knee-length…and I don’t like the shoes, but I don’t know what I’d do instead. That fabric is stunning though.

      • myandyleigh

I concur. I feel like it would be ever so much more appealing if the short part were longer and the long part were shorter. And I don’t know what to do about the shoes, but “minty-fresh toothpaste” is not a color I can embrace.

    • Kitten Mittons

Next RC trend: Prehensile dress tails that will hold your clutch for you.

      • demidaemon

That’s not a half-bad idea. I could see many women appreciating this sort of dress.

        • Kitten Mittons

It would be handy in real life, at least. It might just mean more awkward posing on the RC. That’s an extra hand to do something with. More double guns, I fear.

          • demidaemon

And peace signs. And blown kisses. Continue with this list, if you please. 🙂

    • demidaemon

      My first thought!

  • Karen Belgrad

I suddenly have a craving for Peppermint Bark.

    • alyce1213

      with pistachio ice cream

  • rissa42210

This is terrible. That fabric looks like a menstrual cycle. Too much? Sorrynotsorry.

    • kimmeister

It looks much like my cream blouse did a few minutes ago when I had a spontaneous nosebleed and it gushed all over my blouse.

      • zuzu

        Hope you’re okay!

        • kimmeister

Yes, ok. Just walking around with a wet blouse now (after I rinsed it out). Thanks!

      • melisaurus

Like spilt wine on a cream shirt.

    • alyce1213

Looks like something you’d view under a microscope.

    • Stella Zawistowski

      OH GOD can’t unsee.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Looks like those blood splatter painting Dexter Morgan had on his office walls…..

    • Ewww and yes, exactly.

    • Tanagra

I think it looks more like a rash. Get that dress in an oatmeal bath, STAT!

  • Sarah

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, because I hate the hem and I don’t like toothpaste colored anything, nor am I a personal fan of anything pink, yet she looks great and I’m not mad at it. Amazing Kruger Power at werq.

    • KiP07

I don’t like the shoe color at all, but I can’t help but feel that it was the right choice because of her eyes????? I know it makes no sense, but I dislike all of these things independently, and yet I agree with you: she looks like her usual DK be-me/do-me self.

  • JauntyJohn

Cocktail waitress at the Star Wars cantina.

  • LeelaST

If the front had been knee-length I’d love it. The fabric is pretty but even so recalls a lounging robe. Hate the shoes regardless of color.

  • alyce1213

Get some rest, dear Uncles. This is terrible. Pick a length,

  • I adore a pseudo-bustle, my problem with this is the illusion of shorts from the front. When you start saying “please God don’t let it be a high-low playsuit” there are problems. Those shoes are not good, but it ties the whole minty fresh thing together.

    • ktr33

    • HomeOfficeGirl

“please God don’t let it be a high-low playsuit” – so right!!!

  • crash1212

I really don’t like anything going on here – especially the shoes – but somehow she is making it work. Such is the power of the Kruger.

  • Anna

Hemline looks like an elaborately folded napkin, but I like this look a hell of a lot more than her snoozeville of a Met Gala dress. The bow belt bugs, though.

  • TheLaurenJean

I think the shoes are the perfect pair for this dress. Any other pair I imagine her in just seems so wrong.

  • kimmeister

I had an immediate reaction of dislike because the goofy folds in front are making this look like skort romper. I’ve been seeing a lot of mint colored shoes lately, and have been wondering what the heck would go with them. This ain’t it.

  • saintebeuve

Unrepentant love. The Fug ladies have a picture of her striding down a sidewalk and it looked straight up Blade Runner in the Springtime.

  • luludexter

the shoes are fine – how can anything pull focus away from that hem?!? that hemline has to die, now!

  • GillianHolroyd

    Crotch-length couture is an oxymoron.

  • Caitlin Rain

I’m afraid I’m being an awful priss about it, but … does this seem super super short to anyone else? In an out-of-left-field deeply vulgar way? Maybe it’s how she’s standing, or the contrast with the lovely fabric and the impeccable tailoring … I know I’ve seen shorter skirts, but this bothers me.
… I’ll just be over here in my Maiden Aunt corner, getting the vapors. Anyone with me?

    • BLauD

Pass me smelling salts, I’ll join you.

    • Sobaika

I don’t think it’s necessarily vulgar but I would agree that it’s too short.

    • Tracy_Flick

Right there with you. Clutching my pearls and buttoning the top button on my cardigan. It’s too short and her legs look cold.

  • Radish

Way too short. Even for someone with amazing legs.

  • PastryGoddess

She’s pooping fabric. Exquisitely tailored and beautiful fabric, but still

The shoes are a minor detail compared to that hem(s)

    • BLauD

My exact thoughts. I can not get over pooping out bloody fabric, no matter how beautiful and wonderfully tailored it is…

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        Time for a colonoscopy!!!

  • Sobaika

I think it’s a bit too short and on the youthful side of things. Not that she is old, because she’s not, I just see this confection tail mullet thing on a 17 year old.

  • That dress should see a dermatologist.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Don’t love. It’s kind of…. athletic? Like the Queen of Tennis. And the print is weird. It’s just too weird.

  • Griffinqueen

    circus acrobat or magician’s assistant

  • Tricia Rose

Disagree. This is hideous. Well tailored… except for the “armpit side boob”? And the cut across the top is completely boxing her and making her look disproportionate to the bottom… which is weird because the bottom is about 3 feet of too much fabric. Dress Hideous. Diane looks great in the face however (some of her best makeup I’ve seen) and i’m fine with the shoes… with a different dress.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Love the dress; hate the shoes.

  • juniper

I personally like mullet hems for everyday wear but this just looks like a rooster to me. agree on the pretty fabric but its a micro mullet on the RC….just no.

  • LadyVimes

The shoes are terrible with that dress. I wish the skirt was a bit longer too. I think it could have been really lovely if it fell closer to her knees.

  • Sharon

I think if the front hem was slightly longer it’d be more successful – even with the mullet hem.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the shoes, but I really wish the back of that dress was a good 2 inches shorter. I don’t mind a bit of a hi/lo but I’m not crazy about a full on mullet.

  • SugarSnap108

I shall never abide by a mullet, be it hair or dress. On this I stand firm.

Not liking the Colgate shoes, either. Aqua-Fresh might be interesting, though.

  • She is the girl who can pull that off. However, that shape of dress just shouldn’t exist.

  • quiltrx

I think the front of the dress should be a good bit longer–the shape change from front to back is too drastic. The fabric is divine! (I don’t care for her, but I admit this may be ‘her’ dress.)
And those shoes are an awful color, and cheap-looking to boot. Maybe a semi-naked shoe in silver?

  • mjude

  • StarburstLady

I can’t forgive the dress. I think she looks like she’s wearing a turkey costume.

  • CNM

The dress looks like it’s made of meat. Do not want.

  • majorbedhead

Oh, no. She looks like she and her dress had an argument with a meat grinder and she lost. Badly.

  • Danielle

    Scrolldown wut

  • enuma

I love the fabric, even if it looks a bit like Textiles by Dexter Morgan.

  • DagnyReardon

    Hate everything here.

  • B_C_J

All I see is blood splattered fabric. The style is extremely unflattering. The shoes seem to be an afterthought.

  • MarissaLG

I like it, I just think it’s a smidge too short. Other than that it’s very pretty and seems like it has a very rich texture which I love.

  • Shawn EH

She sort of looks like a strange insect in this. The top is too plain for the odd interest of the skirt. But I like the shoes. Sea foam! That’s it, she’s Lobster Venus.

  • GeoDiva

Agree that only she can wear this and this is probably the first mullet dress I remotely like. The fabric is fab and its fits her perfectly.

  • Imasewsure

No to the dress… NO NO NO to those ugly ass shoes… she’s totally off of my fashionista list these days

  • KT

I like it! Cute, interesting, great colors + pattern, and just weird enough. Such is the power of Diane. The shoes are a clunker for me.

  • lalahartma

Yup, best look in a while.

  • Kitten Mittons

I really like the fabric, but the skirt is so stiff. The mullet thing works for me sometimes, when the fabric is floaty and ethereal. A stiff mullet skirt, I dunno.

That twee little bow at her waist can go away now.

Can’t decide on the shoes with the dress. On their own, I like them.

    • Imma Mäder

The bow totally ruins the dress IMO. Love the shoes with the dress.

  • snarkykitten

My first thoughts were “period disaster”

    um. yeah.

  • FibonacciSequins

No to the shoes and the skirt needs to be a few inches longer. I covet that fabric.

  • Nancer

Not wild about the shoes, though I see why they went with them. Also, she has great legs, but why is everything so fricking short? Another inch or two would still look sexy without looking bare….

  • Pennymac

Sorry. The fabric reminds me of keloid scars. NO.

  • marlie

I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. If the skirt were a teensy bit longer, and the shoes were a different color, I’d be fully on board. But the fabric is really beautiful.

  • Lori

No to the shoes. That mint is very bridesmaid and it pulls focus. I don’t like the dress either. I pretty much always hate a mullet hem and this one is not the exception to the rule. Especially because the front of that thing is way too short. I have no idea how she walked without flashing everyone. I have mixed feelings about the fabric. At first glance I loved it, but the longer I look at it the more it reminds me of an episode of Dexter, which is not really what I’m looking for in my fashion.

  • Jen

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again… what does this woman do these days apart from attend events? Usually looking great but STILL.

    • demidaemon

I believe her last role was playing a detective with Aspergers. I don’t know if the show still exists or not.

  • demidaemon

I love everything about this except for the shoes and the weird ass hem. Why not just hack it off (I know, I know. Designer control blah blah blah.)? But really. Totally unnecessary.

  • E. D.

Ugh. Hate the shoes. Nude sandals?

  • Vtg Fashion Library

Ice skater horror movie costume, used for the scene where she slashes her partner to death with her right skate, then steps into her stilettos and leaves him bleeding on the ice.

  • mila_8

I’d like to see it in front of another background or on the street before casting a final vote on the shoes. Or at least phone a friend:)

  • Not sure I’d consider armhole boobies great tailoring?

  • lilazander

It’s a weird dress; the hem is insane.

  • Man Dala

She looks great (minus the tail).

  • elfbrick

    Frilly tampon.

  • katiessh

I say yes. But it’s difficult for me to find something I don’t like on Diane

  • beautiful fabric, but she’s just too pale for it. no on the dress and shoes. armhole boob bulge, and the shape of that skirt is just odd. odd for the sake of odd. it’s got wings!
