Blake Lively in Gucci Première at the “Grace of Monaco” Cannes Premiere

Posted on May 15, 2014

This is all high-impact and first impressions, but the longer we look at it, the weirder it gets.

That pleated panel down the front just looks weird over her boobs. And the skirt seems too full around the hips. Plus the slit’s too high and the earrings are kind of ugly. And we’ll say it again: the Elsa braid is getting tired, celeb-ladies.

Great colors, though. And we like the shoes and the bracelets. But the earrings are ugly, right? Like something from the Star Trek costume department.

Boobs Legsly is back, bitches! Haters to the left.

(ETA – I like nothing I see here, that’s just the message she is screaming at us, in her head.)

      • PeggyOC

Lining up with the haters. The dress isn’t bad, and it fits perfectly, but nothing from the neck up is working. Apparently she’s there as a “L’Oreal Embassador” and she couldn’t be doing the brand more injustice. The makeup is too thick, the wrong colors and doing her no favors. And I’m ready to take a scissors to the next Yoga Class Braid I see.

        • marlie

Thank you for the explanation of why she was there. I was actually wondering what the hell she was doing at Cannes in the first place.

        • VicD

This is what blonde ambition truly looks like, except that she has no talent – except the talent for self promotion.

        • Paige

In that third pic, it looks like her L’Oreal was also applied to her hair. Maybe this is a thing that I’ve just never heard of?

      • CPK1

        Moving swiftly to the left

      • smayer

For a while, she seemed to be playing the part of Mrs. Ryan Reynolds. Looks like she said, “To the hell with that!”

    • Glam Dixie

But somehow through all of the oddness she still looks lovely. The earrings are nightmare inducing, something is trying to crawl into my ear!! ahhhh! The Elsa braid isn’t going anywhere for at least another month or until the lemmings, I mean stylists find another hot trend (or princess movie).

    • Anne Elliot

she looks so much older than 26

      • Anna

Everyone keeps telling me how hot she is, but her face doesn’t make sense to me. That profile pic posted on here – I mean, what the fuck is going on?!

      • kmk05

OMG she’s younger than I am. What.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

      ROOOOOOOTS.

      • holla

makes me feel better about mine =)

    • kimmeister

I don’t hate the earrings. What I do hate is the clashing lipstick, and I dislike the shoes. Otherwise, I think she looks pretty amazing.

      • Sarah

I would like them if they didn’t crawl quite so high. A bush that should have been a shrub.

        • Amelia

Yeah, the idea is fine, its just that it appears to be poking her face.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

God, she’s so generic that even the “interesting” dresses end up boring on her.

      • VicD

She is the embodiment of a few thousand small town homecoming queens if they married a movie star and get free dresses and trips to Cannes. And I apologize for insulting the many small town homecoming queens who actually are truly special – but she is straight from central casting for that role. Nothing special here at all.

    • rockin robin

I don’t know, uncles. Take away the stupid slit (and the stupid way she is posing with it), and I actually like this from the neck down. It needed different hair and more dramatic makeup, though.

      • NMMagpie

When the back of the dress is the best bit, that’s a problem.

      • Judih1

I agree with. I am a little tired of the “grecian goddess” look in general but with the suggestions you wrote (and a change of earrings) this could be a WERQ for – Blake

      • Sam Erin

Thank you! Totally agree. She looks stunning. Girl can always serve up some movie star glam without a hitch,

        • CPK1

Shame she’s not really a movie star though. She is a beautiful girl but I am not feeling the look apart from the shoes (and the legs).

      • demidaemon

I don’t know. I’ve always hated the Victorya style bodice, and this dress does nothing to change my opinion.

    • NMMagpie

      Some Mudd’s Women realness.

None of this is working for me.

      • DaringMiss

        Loving the ST:TOS reference!

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

I kind of like the earrings, actually, in a golden Cthulu sort of way. Also, what is with her two-tone hair in the earring closeup? Is she not a natural blonde, or does her hair really react that dramatically to the sun?

      • Alyssa_T_Robot

i love the earrings probably BECAUSE they look like something from the star trek costume department.

        • Cathy S

          Exactly. Love those.

        • kmk05

Same here. Should we be ashamed?

          • Alyssa_T_Robot

pshhht! i’m resigned to the fact that tlo and i don’t always agree on whats fabulous and what’s not. we should only be ashamed if we don’t look fierce rockin our sci-fi earrings – which doesn’t seem like a remote possibility to me.

            • kmk05

Fuck yeah, we’d own these Star Trek Cthulhu earrings! Now if we could only afford them.

      • caroline

Definitely not a natural blonde, at least not anymore. Looks like she just got partial foils and left the bottom dark — which, if soft enough a contrast, can look normal. This is not one of the good-looking instances.

      • Leigh David

Above her temples it looks as if bronzer got schmeared over her roots.

      • EditKitten

I love them. Best part of all of this, if you ask me.

      • melisaurus

All I’m seeing is sexy Princess Leia.

    • webslice33

      WERQ! she deserves it!

    • marlie

I actually like the dress, a lot. I wish she wasn’t showing off her leg so much, but otherwise I have no quibbles about the dress. Now, her hair? Nope. And I like the earrings less the more I look at them.

      • Clash D

Hate the earrings. It doesn’t go with the dress.

    • Megan Kennedy

I don’t know what it is about her facial expressions but lately she’s had the Cersei Lannister “I am perpetually smelling something foul” thing going on.

      • LadyVimes

This is a *perfect* Cersei dress.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      Agree… and the HAIR?

    • ktr33

Except for the too-high slit I actually like this dress. But I think it’s too old for her, too “grande dame.” And in that close-up profile, there’s something about her hair & makeup that ages her by 15 years. It’s kind of late-60s Liz Taylor, but on the ironically-named Lively, it’s not working.

      • FrigidDiva

The make up looks especially caked on in the close ups, like they used a really cheap liquid foundation and didn’t blend it in. Either that or too much bronzer. I’m just an every day Jane, but even I can do a better job on my face than that.

        • Pennymac

And to make it worse, the cheap liquid foundation is all in her hairline. It became all I could see.

          • FrigidDiva

YES! That’s how it looks when you first learn how to apply make up in high school and you’re buying whatever cheap make up you can get at the drug store and still don’t really know what it means to match your skin color. Someone actually got paid to this to her? I’d do it for free.

    • Anna

There’s a floor length halter bib over my cleavage, I am not Boobs Legsly anymore, OK?! *sticks out thigh*

    • Constant Reader

When i saw the thumbnail, I thought “the top half looks pretty good; I betcha the bottom half is ruined by a thigh-high slit.” I stand corrected: the dress is slit crotch-high. Of course.

Now that you mentioned Star Trek, all I can see is Deanna Troy prom dress realness. And yes, the earrings are ugly as hell.

      • Starts with K

The slit ruins the dress completely. The top half is so symmetrical and structured. The asymmetry of the slit, as well as the absurd length of it, ruins the look completely. This dress would be stunning without it.

        • Constant Reader

          I agree.

    • Maluca

It’s all working for me. :/

    • hughman

The Amazon Queen of Planet Fashionista condemns all males to photograph her.

    • Missy

Whoa girl. There is makeup in your hair. I understand this is going all bronzed-goddess with the dress, but the “bronzed” could be toned down a few notches.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

The Michael Kors School of Makeup.

    • smh4748

Those earrings are terrifying–she’s a head tic away from a punctured ear drum.

    • sugarkane105

I like all of this, save for the earrings, which give me the heebie-jeebies. But I like the hair – she’s been wearing long braids since the Emmys back in 2009. And this one doesn’t particularly remind me of Frozen.

      • Alyssa

She does have a history of donning braids often…some with more success than others. I would love to see her sport a braided bun.

    • LadyVimes

I unabashedly love this. Especially the earrings, although I wish they curved around the shell of the ear instead of going straight up.
      COME AT ME, KITTENS.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I’m sorry to disappoint – I unabashedly love this too. And that shoe, it slays me!

I do suspect she has body taped that slit to the inside of her thigh though.. :)

        • LadyVimes

The one quibble I have is the slit! She didn’t need it.

      • DTLAFamilies

Me too! I’m not much of a BL fan but I think she looks spectacular.

      • deelup

I love it too! The earrings look like her ears are on fire and dripping garnets. Eff yeah!

      • Kitten Mittons

I do, too, and I hate to give her any kind of credit. Not crazy about her lip color, but otherwise I think she looks outstanding.

      • HerroEmmers

Now that I’ve seen the close-up, the make-up is kind of iffy, but I am swooning over everything else.

      • MissAmynae

Right there with ya, dearie. My only quibble is just a hair too much makeup, esp around her eyes. But this is Cannes, which basically calls for stage makeup, so I can forgive. Very excited to see what else she brings this year.

      • makeityourself

She should have switched ears. That way, the trellis would be crawling up the outer edge of her earlobe, not jabbing her in the head. That’s just my opinion as a jewelry salesperson; Lorraine Schwartz might say this is how she designed them to be worn.

TLo, I think the credit for the dress designer is missing. Who created this unusual garment?

        • Kitten Mittons

It’s omitted from the note under the picture, but the tags on the post suggest it’s Gucci, I believe.

    • BLauD

Her makeup is disastrous. It seems to be seriously aging her. Try scraping some off, honey, it’ll be ok.
We all know what happens to the Star Trek red crew members…

    • DagnyReardon

      I should look so bad.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

        ME TOO! :)

    • Kimbolina

Why does the slit look so weird? It looks like they tried to pin back the lighter red underneath piece so the slit was open more… But it just makes it look like that piece of fabric is getting sucked into her underwear or something…

    • EEKstl

I actually love this dress but the slit is way too high. Love the red on red combo. I actually liked the earrings in the first photo and then they just got weirder to me the more I looked at them.

    • mommyca

      I like it…

    • crash1212

Actually, I really like the earrings. I think the whole look works for her and the venue. Great color.

    • Heather

Why is she wearing so much make up? The dress is a great coour but she always comes off like she’s trying SO hard to be the mega super movie star that she’s not.

    • tallgirl1204

Wow. She looks like Lisa Kudrow in one of those shots. Isn’t Lisa, like, my age? (mid-fifties)

    • Dora Kishinevsky

The dress is kind of awesome (except for the tacky slit), and it fits her bust very well. I am a supporter of this dress.

    • Alyssa

That last shot is reminding me of I Dream of Jeannie. The slit is way too high, and the earrings are fugly.

    • JauntyJohn

Well I give her points for impact.
This looks like one of those outfits that Juliet Prowse or some other grand singer/dancer would wear when they come out to do a number on a variety show, and half way through the song rip the skirt off to reveal some kind of fabulous dance leotard creation underneath for the big routine in the second half of the number.

      Sometimes I think too much.

      • FibonacciSequins

Ha, it totally looks like a Juliet Prowse dance number dress. Perfectly described.

      • malarson2

She’s going to do a high kick any minute…

    • Jennifer Bober

I actually kind of love the earrings, but I’d want them to sit lower. Of course, I design art jewelry, so I have a much higher threshold for weird when it comes to jewelry (seriously, I LOVE Calder).

I don’t mind the pleated piece over the bodice, but I think it would look better if it formed to the dress. Love the color.

      • holla

I do find the earrings interest, but maybe should not be pair with the dress.

      • Aunt Tabby

I like the earring too, and love the color, fabric and tiny pleats. The neckline is lovely on her, but I too wish it A-lined out a bit over the bodice. As it is, it looks like a bib.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

The tiny little pleats! LOVE them. :)

    • MilaXX

Oh I like the earrings. In fact they match a dress I;m wearing this weekend. The dress is too similar to the khaki one she wore last year or the year before. It had a lizard broach on it IIRC. This one goes wrong with that weird pleated boob panel thingy.

    • BayTampaBay

Bitch, Your at the Cannes Film Festival so get your roots touched up immediately or you will never be invited back.

    • Danielle

I have an urge to go do crunches but oh wait, a crunchwrap supreme.

    • LeelaST

The only thing I like are the earrings. That gown looks cheap and the slit isn’t helping.

    • FibonacciSequins

The fabric, the color, the pleating are all gorgeous. It’s a shame they put a bib on the front.

Love the shoes and jewelry, Do Not Love the makeup or hair.

    • GoAwayKardash

My first thought: this is something Esther Williams would have worn.

    • dmkava

She has all the trappings of a movie star, she certainly tries to dress like one, but…can’t shake the feeling that she’s like her GG character, a young girl who makes a splash and then gets married off and disappears…oh wait…

Also–Sharon Stone, Julianne Moore, Nicole, ScarJo, Marion C.-they can do Cannes, this girl just looks out of her league

    • TaurusKW

The only thing I don’t really like his her braid. I like the dress, and I actually love the earrings. I don’t understand your aversion to them.

    • Betsy

I don’t get her relevancy in fashion or entertainment at all.

    • suzq

Her make-up ages her 10 years.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

      I love those shoes.

    • Ashleigh

Film Festival in Cannes, France in a [________] paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry

    • altalinda

Love everything except the height of the slit.

    • decormaven

That braid has got to go. They’ll be sprouting from the most incongruous places, soon.

    • Monabel

I’ll take the earrings, then, as a public service.

    • Imasewsure

I think the combo of the earrings, the tight pull back and her ever so slightly pointy ears are definitely giving off a Vulcan RC vibe for sure.
Dig the shoes though and ok with the dress except for where it is hitting her bust…

    • mickiemonkey

She’s got a Tonya Harding vibe going on.

    • Super_Red

This is why I say I know nothing about fashion– the jewelry she has on are the only pieces I actually like. Ha! That said, with a lower slit, I think this dress would be lovely on anyone who isn’t endowed. As a busty lady I can spot a mile away a dress that is going to make me look bigger than I am, and this is definitely one of those dresses. It’s a fun optical illusion making her look wider than she is and after the initial impact wears off it’s not flattering. The back is pretty, though.

    • Jacob Bowen

      That slit is unfortunate…

    • Fuchsiaforever

      Hot red mess.

    • snarkykitten

Her boobs look like those little ketchup cups. Did she not have the time to get her roots touched up, either?

      • Little_Olive

What I’m seeing is that they blended the foundation into her hair… weird. They also got some on the chest-armpit area (because I refuse to believe that is deodorant).
I’m kind of unforgiving today, but she does not make me wanna be sweet.

    • Lisalady161

I LOVE the earrings, but they don’t work against the bracelets. The dress is lovely, but she just comes off as wrong for me.

    • BobStPaul

This may be a personal best for her.

    • Zeee

Damn Angelina and her protruding leg! That being said, I kinda like this. Yes, the earrings are fugly, but those bracelets are making me drool. And I like the overall color palette.

    • StillGary

s’lright — I like the earrings — they are kind of different — the slit really brings it down

    • MoHub

I cringed when I saw this on Fug Girls. It’s not gotten any better on second viewing.

    • Jennifer McGuire

I would like the gown more without the bib and, yes, a bit less slit. However, kudos to whoever fitted it properly over that very impressive rack. Well done. Hair, not so much.

    • Lilithcat

But the earrings are ugly, right?

Actually, I think they’re pretty fabulous.

      Great colors, though

Another disagreement! I think the two shades fight each other.

I like the pleated panel, but agree about the slit. Way too high.

Not a fan of the shoes, either.

    • Shawn EH

Loving it all, even the boob cups! She’s a sexbomb.

    • MartyBellerMask

I don’t think she has ever looked better! And I actually really dig the earrings.

    • mjude

I don’t get her at. all.

      • Little_Olive

        Ugh, thank you.
Also: Spring break in Daytona makeup.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

I actually really like the earrings. The dress looks like it would fall apart instantly if the wind picked up, and the thigh slit is way too high (I do like the color though).

    • mickiemonkey

      Tonya Harding vibe going on.

    • Heather

I think if the earrings were a little smaller and didn’t look like worms trying to climb into her ear canal they would be pretty/interesting

    • Alloy Jane

I just want to know how many inches of bronzer you have to scrape off before you reach skin. I’ve never understood slits on pleated skirts. Slits are supposed to allow movement, or at least that’s the excuse. Nice shoes though.

    • Jenna621

She is far too pretty to have makeup that looks like it was applied with a paint roller. Good grief.

    • Judy_J

The whole outfit is a bit too Star Trek. She looks like one of Captain Kirk’s conquests.

    • B_C_J

She will always be b-list. She simply doesn’t have the magic. The earrings & calico cat hair color are just too much and she makes the dress look cheap.

      • ShaoLinKitten

LOL @ “calico cat hair color.”

      • Annistella

True dat. She is at Canne posing like a teen model at a shopping centre show. It is painfully awkward. Or let me put it another way, what if she and Tilda Swinton crossed paths on the red carpet *shakes head*.

    • HERMIONE

Somehow how she doesn’t look like herself. I can’t believe she has had work done. Maybe it’s weight loss. I think the whole ensemble, not just the earrings, has a strong Star Trek vibe, that and a hint of Real Housewives of NJ.

    • formerlyAnon

The earrings are . . . *wrong.* Those twining metal bits should have curved back around the edge of her ear & upwards, like an elaborate ear cuff, or they should have been tamed & suspended differently so the majority of the earrings’ total vertical bits were suspended and had movement.

    • israel8491

Dress is gorgeous but the leg slit needs to get sewn shut. Hair is a disaster and the makeup is terrible.

    • Twix

She is just way too orange for this look. The beautiful wine colour of the dress is lost against her fake tan.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Nope, still loving it. Blake, Princess of Mars it is, and it works for me.

    • demidaemon

The earrings are weird. And I’ve always hated that style of bodice. It looks like someone attached a fancy loincloth to the rest of the dress.

    • Trickytrisha

I’m assuming the earrings come with built in wifi and cell phone, otherwise they’re just plain ridiculous. Not sure what’s going on with the makeup, but it looks harsh and aging. I do kinda like the dress, but the silly mile high slit is oh, I don’t know…. too obvious? Messy hair too. I think tacky is the word that fits this whole look best.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I like the color and the pleating, but that front panel is weird, and the slit is way too high.

    • stickee

Huh, deja vu. Hasn’t she worn this dress, hair and makeup before? Like around three years ago?

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Blake, you’re slipping! The other moms’ll never put your brownies front and center at the bake sale if you keep letting your showgirl roots show like this.

I like the earrings (though they do look like a bride gift for Margaery Tyrell,) bracelets, and shoes but non of them belong together. The dress might have been something without that slit.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I sorta think you guys are extra hard on her.

    • Columbinia

Yep, Star Trek was exactly what I was thinking by the time I finished scrolling down — Star Trek the original TV series, that is. It’s very vixen from another planet tries to seduce Capt. Kirk for nefarious motives.

    • kt

      She looks stunning

    • Truthiness2U

I like the earrings. Not sure they go with the bracelets and shoes, but I think they’re really pretty and interesting. I don’t even mind the dress, despite all it’s trickiness…except that the slit is too high. I hate what that does to it, and that while I actually think that’s a good colour on Blake with her normal skin tones, I’m not feeling it as much with the spray tan and make-up by roller-paint they seem to have done to her here. She totally didn’t need that, as she looked more than fine with her normal skin tones with all of her great New York looks (the great Met dress; the two coat porn looks).

But even despite all the minor things, I think overall she actually interesting/good here.

One last unpopular opinion, while I am over the braid thing as a thing for lady stars, I do actually kind of like it here. I think she rocks it better than most.

    • sunflower

I actually like this look on her, but that slit needs to be way lower. Slits that go up that high always look very Miss Universe to me

    • amaranth16

I love the earrings. I love all the jewelry, actually. I find her makeup pretty uneven, though.

    • rebeemoon

I don’t know, people. I like the dress–panel and all. And I love the oddness of the earrings, though I would have preferred it if the metal part were rendered not so glamorously, say in a dull copper or brass.

    • ktvon

those earrings are meant for J Law at the hunger games catching fire premiere

    • Radish

Glad to see that even a gorgeous girl like Blake gets frizzy hair now and then!

    • Molly Dowd

I kind of really love the earrings. I’m sorry! They remind me of a very Lee Pace-in-the-Hobbit aesthetic, what with the deer antlers. And I love the bracelets. The dress fits well, but the slit is too high for my tastes, and the more I look at the pleated panel, the more it grows on me. The braid though, has to go.

    • m3grrl

The earrings look like metal fungus.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I am in love with the earrings.
