“Everyone Wants To Be Me Or Do Me” New York Party

Posted on May 05, 2014

Darlings, if a picture’s worth a thousand words, then this should all suffice to give you an idea of just how wonderful our “Be Me or Do Me” book party this Saturday was. Over 250 Bitter Kittens made their way out to see us (and each other) over a nearly 6-hour period. Much laughing, connecting and just plain having fun was had by all, watched somewhat nervously by the poor mama pigeon just guarding her eggs and waiting for us all to leave. We decided to make her the symbol of our Mother’s Day book contest (The winners of which will be announced later this week).

We just want to publicly thank our good friends Emmett McCarthy of EMC2 for hosting the party in the adorable courtyard behind his store, Gorgeous Fabrics for coming out and pitching in in the way a good friend will when you turn to her and say in panic “HELP!” And special thanks to Sugar Flower Cake Shop for the GORGEOUS cake, to Bread for the delicious nibblies and to Miss Brittany Lovely, for being the best Bitter Kitten by running around like a slave all day at our beck and call.

And above all, thanks to you guys. Every time we meet the BKs, no matter what city we’re in, they all look around in wonder at each other and say, “What a fun, friendly, fabulous little crowd this is!” Darlings, it was never a surprise to us. We’re serious as a bounced check when we say we wouldn’t be a thing without the support of y’all. You’re gorgeous, darlings.

There are also two lovely writeups of the party here and here.

What great fun you all had! Love the cake, and the funny twist on the book cover art posies. Everything’s coming up TLo! Congrats!

  • MannahattaMamma

a bitter kitten family is only as good & friendly as its uncles. isn’t that written somewhere, on a stone tablet or something? it should be.

    • Fuchsiaforever

      So true!

  • SewingSiren

Insane jealousy is aging and unattractive, so I’m trying to curb it.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I could be jealous, but as you wisely said, it’s aging and who wants that? Reading this recap and the article just makes me happier than words could say for TLo’s success and for all of the BK’s who attended such a fabulous and fun event!

    • OffToSeeHim

Me too – how’s it working for you? Next time there’s a special event like this, I’m going to beg them to Skype it and I’ll host a NC gathering of BKs. 🙂

  • TigerLaverada

Looks lovely! So glad it was a huge success, but that’s no surprise. We all love you, Uncles. Wish I could have gone, but it’s a thousand mile trip. That’s not exactly a pigeon, by the way, but a relative, a Mourning Dove (so named for their mournful call).

  • siriuslover

It looks like such a wonderful gathering! And I’m just a bit jealous of all the bitter kittens (and even the momma pigeon for her bird’s eye view).

  • 250 people??? It didn’t seem like that many….the crowds must have been handled very discreetly. The weather was just perfect, the company was fun, and so were the ambiance (and the cake). Emmett & Co. were such gracious hosts. I’m so glad you Uncles had a good time too! MWAH!

    • And my but you looked FABULOUS m’dear!

      • Jennifer Bober

        Yes, she did.

      • Tom said he liked my earrings….I had a moment of verklempt.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Tom complimented my earrings at the D.C. booksigning, so of course I started babbling like a ninny-so I understand your verklemptness-aren’t TLo the best?

          • OffToSeeHim

OMG, I know that would happen to me if I was lucky enough to own a pair of earrings fabulous enough to get a compliment from the Uncles!

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, it was the babbling fool part of my brain that just kicked in-what can I say?

        • Jennifer Bober

…and I just realized that the person admiring my necklace (which is my own work) was Rio Hamilton.

          • formerlyAnon

            Well how validating is THAT!?

          • Jennifer Bober

Oh yeah! It was actually really cool how many people at the party commented on it and the earrings. I think I need to find some trendy little stores downtown to see if they’d like to sell my stuff.

          • OffToSeeHim

Post some pictures Jennifer! Do you have an Etsy page or a website?

    • Introspective

I hate how busy my job made me over the last 24 hrs that I am only jumping into this post now. I too was there, and DIED to get to hug the uncles!! I also cannot believe that 250 people were there. it felt like an easy, breezy backyard cocktail hour with close intimate friends (that all met on the internet!) Clearly that is a testament to wonderful Emmett and his folks were in managing the event. decadent food, decadent wine and just a fun atmosphere. (The Latin lovah serving the wine was so a friend in my head!!)

I met scimommy, gabi, milaxx, alyce1213 and a few lurkers on the boards who were all just FABULOUS. So ready for the NYC BK reunion whenever anyone wants to jump in on planning!!!

And, I spent, no lie, at least an hour in my apt turning my closet upside down trying to find the most “effortless” outfit to meet TLo, and when they told me they loved my look, *swoonfest*!!!!

A million thank yous from the bottom of this die hard BK’s heart!!! it was a perfect day indeed.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I certainly can attest to a grand time being had by all while I was there – miles of smiles and immense good cheer. It’s extremely special when we can happily transmogrify from “virtual” to real flesh, blood, fashion and fabulousness.

I hope we’uns can get together again some time in the future to continue the good, good GOOD vibrations.

    • BrooklynBomber

Are you in any of the pictures above?

      • NDC_IPCentral

I am, but obscured by others, so you can’t see my face and only a smidge of my silver-gray head. In two of the pics (#2 and #3) below the MilaXX tweet. The gray haired woman in the dark top is the friend who accompanied me; I’m to her left.

        • BrooklynBomber

Oh, too bad. I see your friend, though! Wish I could put some names to faces above.

          • NDC_IPCentral

With her back to the camera, the tall woman in the grape-colored top and short brown pageboy hair cut is Scimommy. Nurse Ellen is the stylin’ dame with blond hair and eyeglasses in the black and white zig-zag dress. The only ones that I can spot!

          • BrooklynBomber

Thanks. I thought I had Nurse Ellen picked out because her avatar picture is so clear.

          • decormaven

Ooh, I spotted that dress and wondered who got to wear that dress. Way to go, Nurse Ellen! Since Scimommy had id’d herself as a person of height, I correctly guessed on her.

    • Well, you all are invited to NC to party party party! We have a big house which is great for parties and lots of empty bedrooms for those who might not be steady enough to drive. Red carpet attire is appreciated, but bring comfy shoes with you for after you’ve wowed the others!

      • NDC_IPCentral

On Saturday night or Sunday I tried to send you the pix I took of you, but I have received an undeliverable message because I made an error in your e-mail address – letter transposition. I’ll correct that and resend. You look super in both!

  • PeggyOC

Please come to Boston. (No, this was not intended to get the old Glen Campbell song stuck in your head!)

    • suzq

Dave Loggins wrote it. That you did not know that means you’re not the old fart that I am! ; )

    • OffToSeeHim

OK, you’re on my list at the Boston party!!! Be afraid!! 😀

  • TulipWorthy

Looks like you had a lovely day. Sure hope to meet you one day if you come out to Arizona.

  • @Biting Panda

If the good people who published your book, do not send you to Atlanta with all the bells and whistles on, I am going to be bereft.
Kudos to the Kittens who got to meet, greet and mingle.

    • decormaven

If the good people who published your book, do not send you to Atlanta with all the bells and whistles on, Biting Panda and I will do a two-woman takedown or something equally evil.

  • Capt. Renault

Looks like you had a lovely time without me. I’m so glad.

  • Wow, my very own “paparazzi” shot posted on TLo! Though it looks like I need to work on my bitchface a little more 🙂

Thank you for an AMAZING afternoon! Loved getting to meet so many fabulous Kittens and, of course, the Uncles who make it all happen!

    • Twigg

Next you’ll have your very own parking lot tour!

    • Fuchsiaforever

Great meeting you! Congrats on your paparazzi shot- hehehe 😉 !!!

    • MilaXX

You and your hubby were adorable!

      • We loved getting to chat with you, No No Nanette! 🙂

    • GorgeousThings

It was so wonderful to meet you, and all my fellow BKs!

  • Scimommy

I’m waiting for the Mad Men post, but… okay, this will do in the meanwhile. 😉 The party was really and truly fun. It’s really not surprising given how smart and funny Tom and Lorenzo’s blog is that it attracted a bunch of smart and funny BKs. Was really fun to chat with you, ladies! Thanks for organizing this shindig, TLo, Emmett, Brittany, and others. Also, TLo, your book? HILARIOUS!

  • Heather

I love the photo of TLo with the cake – such beautiful smiles! So wish I’d been able to join you. Huge congrats on the book. xoxo

  • Le_Sigh

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! So lovely! Congratulations!

  • Kitten Mittons

Reading all the updates and recaps in the Lounge this weekend was so much fun! As jealous as I am, I’m just completely tickled pink for everyone that got to go, and that it was as successful as it turned out to be. Congrats to TLo for all their accomplishments!

I am dying with curiosity to find out who is who in those pictures. Dying.

  • ballerinawithagun

Fabulous! Love the cake, stripes, plaid and flowers, all united by color!

  • Danielle

I’m not sure if I can talk to or upvote MilaXX for like… 4 hours after this. So jealous.

    • MilaXX

LOL, Thanks babe. I had a blast with the BK’s.

      • BrooklynBomber

Are you in any of the pictures?

        • MilaXX

I don’t think so, but I think the uncles tweeted a pic

          • BrooklynBomber

            Nice new avatar, btw!

  • So sorry I couldn’t get to it. It would have been grand indeed to see you both again and mingle with so many of the BKs. I’m delighted to know it was such a smash, though I never had a doubt.

    • MilaXX

I would love to have seen you there. After all a man who wears a kilt is a guy after my own heart.

      • What a sweet thing to say, Mila!!! I would have been so happy to meet you at last.

  • Gatto Nero

This brought a smile to my face on Monday morning — no mean feat.
Congratulations to TLo and to all the BKs who attended! So sorry to have missed you all.

  • smayer

Aw, looks like so much fun!

  • F&M Writers House

So happy for the shout out to Franklin & Marshall College alum and Writers House denizen Miss Brittany Lovely for being your “beck and call Bitter Kitten!”

    • Brittany Lovely

All thanks to the Writers House! 🙂

  • rebeemoon

Looks like a wonderful time was had by all. Soo jealous. What do we have to do here in Boston to snag an appearance?

  • Mod_girl

    Lucky! Everyone looks great!

  • Susan Collier

    Yaaaayyyyyy!!! Come to Austin next!

  • Awww, I’m so glad it went well! Very jealous of all those who were within traveling distance.

  • Patricia Groves Dobrowski

*sniff* it was even my birthday that day, and were I not thousands of miles away, I would have been there in a hot second. It looks like it was fabulous fun!

  • kat89

So upset that I had to miss it! I’m glad there was a good turnout and the weather was so perfect for it. Emmett is such a lovely person. On the one occasion I met him several years ago, he couldn’t have been kinder to my daughter and me. It was so nice that he hosted this for you!

  • Jessica Freeman

The party looked lovely. Uncles looked handsome. I remain envious.

  • Julie Chase

That might be the prettiest cake in all the land. I’m so glad the party was such a hit!

  • Sarah

Oh, man. How is it possible to be equally delighted and totally bereft? Just lovely. And infuriating 😉 You lucky dogs! What a great cake, a cute place, and a fun time! And watched over by a mama pigeon to boot! Awesome.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Wish so much I could have been there! At least I had a fairly good excuse — trekking to the Bronx to help a sweet rescue dog find a new home. Still, would have loved to meet the BKs and the uncles in person!

    • suzq

Not only are they handsome…they smell marvelous! I was quite impressed by that in DC. It’s hard to travel down by train and still smell good.

  • Kent Roby

I’m so jealous! I’m glad y’all had a blast; I’m counting on seeing my Uncles Dearest and fellow BK’s at some point in the not-too-distant future!

  • formerlyAnon

Looks like a good time was had by all. Wonderful! (And those glasses suit you, Tom.)

  • Kent Roby

One quibble (aside from the jealously bit of my being many states away from the party): I would so love to see guests with tags indicated their sobriquets from this site!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

If I ever get to attend a BK meetup I’m going to put my craft supplies to good use to make a really clever name tag

      • OffToSeeHim

If they come to Raleigh I’ll make nametags for EVERYONE!!

      • formerlyAnon

I will make a really LAME name tag because my craft skills suck. But it will have my screen name on it.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I’d probably overthink my nametag, but given the sheer amount of crafty supplies that I own I like to think that I would eventually come up with something workable.

    • Jennifer Bober

Alyce1213 actually did that, which was great. It had her profile pic on it too. It was how we were all introducing ourselves.

      • alyce1213

I’m surprised I was the only one! I got there a bit late — so no photos of moi.

    • BrooklynBomber

I know! I’m thinking pretty much the same thing. Identify yourselves, dear BKs!

  • KinoEye

Lovely, indeed! That cake is gorgeous, as were the decorations and all the attendees. Happy it all went so swimmingly 🙂

    • AND it was so delicious. I wasn’t prepared for the colored decorations to be yummy too, but they were. Great job!

  • dea

Congrats! Wish I could have been there, it looks so fun! :*

  • Jennifer Bober

I could not have enjoyed the afternoon more. I made some new friends and really enjoyed having the chance to chat with both of our fabulous uncles who are just the sweetest guys in the world. I also made a pair of 17-year-old girls totally flip out when I sent them the picture of us. (Shhhh…they don’t know about the other part yet). I also found out just how many of my friends (that I never would have thought it) are Bitter Kittens when I put the pic up on Facebook!

  • GorgeousThings

That was SO much fun!!! I had a blast going around and refilling my fellow BK’s wine glasses. It was a great way to get to know people! For some reason, no one was interested in having their seltzer glasses refilled 🙂

    • Ann, your wine refills were MUCH appreciated! And the seltzer/wine combination was an excellent mid-party treat 🙂

  • Such fun! Who is the kitten in the mustard hat? Gorgeous!

    • Oh do you mean at the bottom of the Bowery writeup?

      • Yes!

        • Haha that’s me! I’m a little self conscious about how I look in that pic so thank you for the compliment!

          • Oh, hush. You’re adorable.

          • Haha I guess I forgot to remind myself that everyone wants to be me or do me.

          • Fuchsiaforever

          • MilaXX

You were a doll! I loved chatting with you and your hat was too cute for words.

          • Gaby, you looked so fabulous, I wanted to make sure I got a pic with you in it for the article. Loved the hat – I am a hardcore hat collector myself. If you ever want to find out about getting your hat lined, look up the Milliner’s Guild in NYC – they are a wonderful group, and one of the designers could probably help you (they also have really fun hat parades for Bastille Day, Easter, St Catherine’s Day – she was the patron saint of hats – who knew?, etc). You, and all of the other bitter kittens, were just gorgeous and wonderful (and TLo were both pretty dashing and delightful, too!).

          • Thanks! Both for the compliment and the advice – I’ll look them up for sure.

          • The Milliners Guild gals (and guys) are lovely, and I’m sure you will find someone who can help you. I have some vintage hats which really need TLC, including a gorgeous chapeau which is losing all of its very large feathers! Might need to seek out their advice as well in the near future. Good luck! xoLG

          • You are a stunner! Love the bracelet matched to your hat.

          • Thanks! I was a color-explosion so I went slightly matchy with accessorizing.

          • Fuchsiaforever

Gaby did have an amazing outfit! I could not stop complimenting her hat 🙂 and the vintage pants where gorgeous….

          • Thanks!

    • Sarah

      Hat AND pants – love!

      • Thank you!

        • Sarah

You’re most welcome. I am a huge fan of fancy ladypants! You looked very cute.

    • alyce1213

I made such a fuss over Gaby’s hat — in person, you could see the perfect millinery construction. It was corduroy, just adorable.

      • Thanks! The only fault of that hat is that it’s unlined – maybe someday I’ll have it properly finished by a milliner. Maybe.

True story: I have more than 50 hats in my collection.

        • Fuchsiaforever

What! Wow! Hey great meeting you Gaby!

  • Lori

I’m a little envious of all the Bitter Kittens who got to go to this. It looks wonder. Congratulations TLo!

  • Terrah

First of all, THAT CAKE. Secondly I love thinking about how everyone must have picked their most favorite and freshest outfits to meet Uncle TLo.

But in order to curb my insane jealousy of not being able to attend I will maintain my own sense of importance by pointing out that’s not a pigeon, it’s a Mourning Dove.

  • Lilithcat

The cake is gorgeous. And I’m so glad you had nice weather!

  • marlie

Looks like everyone had a great time! And you all had perfect weather for it, too!

  • SugarSnap108

Soooooo sad I missed this. Thanks for posting these pics, though. Those are some CUTE kittens!

  • Isabel

You two look so happy! Congrats

  • suzq

I’m so sorry that I missed it. I was hiking The Great Saunter around New York that day (32 miles) and by the time I got to the East Side, I was in NO MOOD for a detour! It looks like the sun shone brightly and you got it all in before the rain hit. I wish you continued success with your book!

  • Inspector_Gidget

Looks like loads of fun. Jealous!

  • Kerry McCombs

That’s not a Pigeon it’s a Mourning Dove. Sorry…bird nerd here. Glad you had a fab party!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I had to go back and look to confirm for myself(another bird nerd) yes, it is indeed a mourning dove!

    • MaggieMae

Move over and make room on the bird nerd bench.

  • Hussyred

Come to Austin! I promise to round up some amazing people to properly adore you 🙂

  • Kim Elmore

    That cake is TO DIE!!!

  • Honestly, when T and Lo approved of me serving Joan Halloway realness, I was DONE. Love you bitches!

  • MilaXX

Words cannot express how much fun I had chatting with everyone. I grin like an idiot every time I think about the day.

  • janet

Looks like a great time … just ordered your book 🙂

  • Aidan B

UGH. I SO wish I could have made it!! I had a bridal shower to go to but even if that hadn’t been on the same day I ended up getting pretty sick this weekend. While the Bitter Kittens share many things, we don’t want to share germs. Glad a great time was had by those of you who did go!

  • Ann VerWiebe

Come to Cleveland! We’re hosting the Gay Games this summer – it would be perfect!

  • ampg

This looks like so much fun – someday I’ll get to meet T and Lo myself!

  • Oh, this makes my heart happy!

  • SuzyQuzey

That looks like so much fun! Come to Miami, guys!

  • Amel

this looks like it was a blast! sorry to have missed it!

  • Fuchsiaforever

Hi Uncles!!! It was a pleasure meeting you guys! You are both so adorable, warm, and sweet! I’m so happy that I was able to make it to the bash. Thank you so much for coming to NYC! Yayyyyy!!!

So fun to meet the other Kittens! Even though I got there very late there was still a small crowd of super cool, smart and stylish Bitter Kittens!!! We closed the party!

PS: I started reading the book and I love it! Xoxox

  • LambeeBaby

It was so great and exciting to meet you and the kittens on Saturday! And I actually tweeted my very first pic! ***squeee*** and special thanks to Emmitt for hosting.

  • DesertDweller79

Looks like so much fun! Wow, that cake is beautiful! So glad you all had fun!

  • rkdgal

What fun for kittens and uncles alike! It’s been so wonderful to see the blog come to life via these book signings. Glad y’all got to connect, and hope I can make it sometime… 🙂

  • OffToSeeHim

RALEIGH RALEIGH RALEIGH RALEIGH RALEIGH RALEIGH RALEIGH!!!!!!!!!!! Please please please please please please please!!

I wish you would come to Australia! Melbourne specifically of course ;-P

  • TLJezebel

If you come to Denver I will gladly be your BK slave.

  • Courtney

Awesome looking party! Of all the weekends to be in Boston…

  • GeoDiva

So glad that it turned out so well.

  • Raspberry2012

Congrats again on all the success, and may it continue tenfold, Uncles! So sorry I missed the party, but it looked awesome!

  • JynxTheCat

  • OffToSeeHim

I checked them out and they’re stunning! Especially love the hollow lampwork bead pendant and earrings!

    • Jennifer Bober

Thanks. I love making hollow beads. They’re a challenge, so it’s satisfying when they’re done.
