I really like the dress, but I’m not sure about the hair. Kinda like a dust mop mohawk.

    • Glam Dixie

      It looks like a swiffer.

      • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

There even appears to be a piece of lint in it in the first photo.

        • MilaXX

I think it’s a bobby pin peeking through

    • DamiaRain

At least her hair is up, instead of down and covering up the details on the top of the dress like SO many other ladies do

    • Darren Nesbitt

This looks kinda Drag-y from the neck up. . . sorry.

      • demidaemon

        Like minds!

    • VicD

Excuse me m’aam, would you like me to remove the poodle puppy that is sitting on your head? (almost wrote “shitting on head,” which also works here)

      • SportifLateBoomer

omg that is so mean! but it made me laugh out loud. So thank you. And you’re right to pose the question.

  • Christine Hart

I wish the hem was just a bit shorter

  • Tracey Magyar

Love it all. Especially the hair.

  • Glam Dixie

It’s the Kardashian Effect: everyone is now wearing their dresses one size too small.

    • KateMaryC

I agree. I even noticed on the finale of HIMYM (I know, I know) that all of the dresses were pulling.

    • Jessica Freeman

I like to think its the Spanxx effect. Still need to wear the same size ladies!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

In that Vanity Fair article on stylists, one of them talked about the importance of close-fitting clothes so it doesn’t look like the body is, I think the word she used was “bulky”. Some of them take that to extremes.

      • MilaXX

I think that’s why we sometime get dresses so tight we can see a belly button

      • demidaemon

I just… I mean….WHAT? I have no words for how nonsensical this POV is.

    • melisaurus

It could be the I’m normally a size 12 but in this particular designer I’m a 14 effect? Or the I’m slightly larger than a sample size effect. I like in Tina Feys book how when all the stylists were excited she was a sample size she pointed out it was because she is shorter than a model.

  • Ganoc

That’s very similar to the Lupita Nyongo number, no?

  • @Biting Panda

    Oh! Oh my.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I prefer the sleeker way Janelle Monae does a similar hairstyle but I love this turquoise. I’d probably have matched the pedi to the dress and not the shoes though.

  • Haley Buchanan

Love the dress and the hair! Makeup’s a bit on the pancake-y side, but the overall effect is just so fun!

  • tmetz85

Love the hair!!! The dress is just a skosh too tight, but otherwise I think she looks fantastic!

  • KinoEye

I feel like I shouldn’t like the hair, but damn it all if it isn’t giving me LIFE.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Your instincts are dead on. Don’t let your head talk you out of it!

    • marlie

My first instinct was “LOVE!,” and then I started to think too much about it, but really, I’m sticking with my gut. It’s awesome.

    • Danielle

      I’m with you all.

    • Constant Reader

Thank goodness it’s not just me.

  • Evan

I don’t know who she is, but she looks like she’s ready to audition for a musical on Broadway.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

She plays Dawn, Don’s secretary on Mad Men.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I love the hair, I just wish it wasn’t quite so teased-out. Everything else looks pretty fab, but I find myself wishing for a belt. A skinny one in a saturated color like fuchsia or a rather honking one in orange. Maybe a better solution would be more interesting shoes. The heavy detail at the neck seems ever-so-slightly out of balance with the minimalism of the rest of the dress and its close fit.

  • ModernDowager

    She’s adorable.

  • alyce1213

The dress is too tight. I love the idea of her hair, but I don’t think it’s well done — too high, too loose, shape needs a little better wrangling.
However, her megawatt smile trumps everything.

  • ojosazules

That smile could power a small country.

  • sojourneryouth

It’s a little too tight, but that is definitely her color and silhouette. While I like the hair, and am a natural girl myself, a sleeker style would have been better with this sleek dress (just a few more minutes with the hot comb would have done it.) I like the shoes with this, too, although I am not particularly fond of them by themselves. What really cracks me up is her toes and my toes are identically shaped. I could totally be her foot double if Dawn ever went hippie!

    • Allison Angier

You and she are very lucky indeed. Pretty, pretty toes. And I love the metallic lacquer she has on.

  • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

At first I was going to type, “Who is she? She’s gorgeous.” And then I realized that’s Dawn. I hope her character gets a storyline and more screen time.

My only quibble is her make-up is so thick you could scrape it off with a butter knife.

  • butterflysunita

    Kind of fabulous. Love it.

  • Jessica Freeman

    Hell yes girl.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

It’s criminal this girl isn’t invited everywhere. I’d love to see more of her.

  • MilaXX

YAS! Love her and I’m so happy to hear Dear White People got picked up by Lionsgate.

    • Trish

She’s in Dear White People?! So excited to see that movie!

    • Denise Alden

I’m so excited to see that movie!

  • Lily

Teyohah, you are no Lupita. Props for the shoes and shimmering pedi, though.

    • Vee

  • KT

She looks very cute and so excited to be there. Great color on her, I’m digging the shoes, and the makeup looks great. The embellishments looks a little cheap to my eye, though, and though the hair is really fun… I don’t think it’s actually working. In fact, I think Prince is the only person who can really make that hair work. But otherwise, nicely done.

  • therealkuri

I didn’t even recognize her as Dawn at first. She looks amazing and modern. Love the lipstick and dress colour.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That hair hawk makes up for the gold toe nail polish.

  • KendraMR

Turquoise is one of those hues that works well for us women of color. This look is reminiscent of the Gucci dress Lupita wore to the SAG Awards (although Lupita wore a more saturated turquoise and intricate neckline). I’m not feeling the hair and makeup, but her beautiful, bright smile trumps everything.

  • Kent Roby

Fun hair, too much makeup, fun dress (but too tight and too long). But her smile, as well as her smize, would make me want to run across the room to meet her!

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love it- love the hair; the makeup is a bit shiny, but I love the dress and the shoes. Nice work ma’am.

  • Nancer

Slightly snug, but Day-um! Woman is serving! Love the color and love the hair and love – well – everything!

    • decormaven

Yay! Dawn is in the house. She is working it here, for sure.

  • Vee

I believe that the nature of the natural hair style just can’t be picked up on film. Depends on the products used and type of natural hair. There seems to be more detail than what the photo can show. That is a braid in the front ending in a flounce at the top of the head. I like it.

    • MilaXX

I agree. I saw it on hair stylist Felicia Leatherwood’s IG and thought it was lovely.

      • Vee

Thanks for mentioning that. Found it on IG, I love it even more now. Looks like a reverse french braid in the back.

  • Sarah

OMG her smile is amazing!! I wonder why the sleeves are shorter on her than on the model. I think it would have been a tad more flattering if she left the cap sleeve on – it would look less tight I think.

  • MannahattaMamma

beautiful color, beautiful dress — and she looks like she is LOVING herself in it, which counts for a lot.

  • marlie

OMG, I *LOVE* her hair! I like the dress (but I wish the sleeves hadn’t been altered), but I think her lipstick is a little too bright (but that SMILE!). I wouldn’t have picked those shoes, but they’re ok.

    • marlie

Teyonah has also suddenly made it onto my “Celebrity Love” list because she looks so much like my sister’s oldest childhood friend that they could be sisters.

  • Bradio311

    Stunningly gorgeous!

  • Miss wks

    her fro hawk is ridiculous…

  • Fräulein K.

I like the dress, and I love the hair. Love love love it. Great make-up, too.

  • demidaemon

This look is a little draggy, no? I’m not sure if I love it because of that fact or think it’s totally wrong because of that fact.

  • suzq

The dress is gorgeous but the hair….wow. I hate to comment on African American hair, generally, but I would like to think that something different could have been done with hers to give her less height and less of a “campy” effect.

  • LaSylphide

Dress is ok but a little dowdy for someone her age with a good figure. LOVE the hair, but it’s too sassy for that dress. Color is great on her, though. Make up is great too.

  • formerlyAnon

Not the sharpest version of this hair shape I’ve seen, but I am ALL FOR hair styles that have their own independent shape, as long as it works whith wearer’s face. The dress seems a bit thin and over-stretchy (I’m sure it’s not) upon examination, but it’s a great look-at-a-glance.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

I 98% love this! I wish the dress were either a smidge lower cut or a little more rock n roll, but otherwise, girl looks awesome! I love that hair!!!!

  • Wink

Love the dress. Regarding the snug fit (around her hips), one size larger is likely to be too big, especially through the bust and waist. So, she’s probably wearing the size that looked best ‘overall’ for her figure. Good effort!

  • ScarlettHarlot

I love this color on her!

  • frannyprof

Love the color on her; hate the dress and shoes.

  • ThaliaMenninger

  • FridaStaire

    Love it!

  • Skippymom1

Love the dress and the lip color – she’s so pretty. No comment on the shoes.

  • DagnyReardon

  • kim bunchalastnames

i wish she’d taken the hem up to her knee.

  • jwatt85

A black woman rocking her natural hair is revolutionary. If you’re not familiar, get over it.

  • somebody blonde

FAB. The lower half is a little eh, but the top half is gorgeous. WERQ.

  • JenJF

It may be just her fantastic smile, but I think she looks gorgeous–what a fun look!

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

She’s so cute! Love the hair and the dress and the smile

  • kategs

I love having her back on the RC. She’s gorgeous.

  • dschubba

I hate those shoes, but everything else is a win.

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

    Love, love, love.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

No on the shoes, yes on that dress and color. Her makeup is on point.

  • mjmiller77

liking the dress, love the color. Hair – big no. and not lovin’ that lip color.

  • Toya Renée

I think she looks absolutely fabulous. The color is great and I love the hair. It says something that it’s still so revolutionary and refreshing to see a Black woman sporting her natural hair on the red carpet. I hope to see more and more of it.

  • BrooklynBomber

Cute dress, great color, though I wish it had been hemmed to the knee. The hair, though. . . hmmmmmmmm.

  • Clash D

The only thing I like on her is the lipstick.
