Taylor Schilling in Roksanda Ilincic at the 2014 Reel Stories, Real Lives Event

Posted on April 07, 2014

Let’s all agree to be nice. She’s been struggling in her red carpet style, in that adorable way newly minted stars do. This isn’t perfect, but it’s a huge step in the right direction. And besides, how often does anyone get it perfect on the red carpet?

“Orange Is The New Black” actress Taylor Schilling attends the 2014 Reel Stories, Real Lives Benefiting The Motion Picture & Television Fund at Milk Studios Hollywood, California in a Roksanda IlincicAvery’ dress paired with a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch, Christian Louboutin slingback pumps, and Rosestone Jewelry.

Okay, the color and the shape of the dress look really fabulous on her. We thought we hated the shoes, but we’re coming around to loving them. We’re just not sure they work with the dress. If our eyes go straight to the floor upon looking at you, that’s probably an argument against the shoes with this dress. Those sleeve things look okay from the side, but they make her look bulky from the front. Hair and makeup are really good, though. The fact that she looks polished and coordinated  - and that she’s wearing a real color and not some namby-pamby neutral – are all very encouraging signs. Attagirl. We can handle the shoes. But that clutch is so very wrong.

Those shoulders look like football pads. The color is great for her. The shoes make no sense to me.

      • makeityourself

They make sense if you are Wonder Woman and you need a sling-back pump.

Or you stole them off one of Captain America’s backup dancers.

To be honest, every time I see “Taylor Schilling” I expect Taylor Kitsch, so I’m always too surprised by the Schilling to pay too much attention to what she is wearing.

Me too & I am even an orange is the new black fan.

        • DinaSews

I started watching Orange is the New Black and now I’m hooked. The new season starts on June 5th. How does Netflix air the season when it’s new? Once a week? Or do they dump the whole season online? I’ve never watched a Netflix series before! Thanks.

          • rawhide

How did you watch the first season anyways? Netflix original shows always release all the episodes for a season at one go. So better prepare to lock down yourself for 13 hrs on June 6 like the rest of us die-hard fans!

            • DinaSews

I just started watching it last week so I did not know how it originally aired. Guess I’ll put in for a vacation day!

          • DeebaCee

Dump the whole season at once. So beware of spoilers if you don’t binge on the whole season in one day.

            • DinaSews

              Thanks.

    • SarahVN

The clutch is a disaster, but I actually quite like the shoes.

      • DeebaCee

I like the shoes, but definitely not for that dress.

    • http://thejoyfulfox.blogspot.com/ Laura

If those shoes had a heel that was slightly thicker and lower, I could see my grandmother wearing them with one of her power suits. Granted, my grandma is 90 years old and fabulous…but I don’t think “grandma” is the first impression you should necessarily aim for.

Everything else is awesome, though. That hair and makeup is great on her.

I wish the shoe was a different color – that blue/red-violet combo is an interesting idea.

    • MilaXX

That’s a Fall dress with Spring shoes and they do not go with each other. The bag is trying to make the argument for the shoes and failing miserably. I like the dress and the shoes, but not together. The bag is too gift with purchase looking.

      • Anathema_Device

I think yellow shoes or clutch would make this more spring-y and fun.

        • MilaXX

This dress has heavy looking fabric and a large patent leather or leather patch in the back. I don’t think you can make it look Springy just by pairing it with light colored shoes.

      • cocohall

Every syllable of your comments is on point. I have had no caffeine yet and couldn’t make sense of why this look went wide of the mark. Thank you. Gift with purchase! Excellent phrase that I will be stealing.

    • sagecreek

I don’t think those shoes work, but I’m giving them a pass for the sake of that radiant smile.

    • Darren Nesbitt

      Girl, that’s not your dress.

    • ojosazules

      This is dramatically better.

    • Sarah

Those shoes look like French airplanes, and I don’t think they go any more than that weird clutch does. She looks really good from the knees up, though. Best ever, I’m thinking.

      • The Versatile Chef

Yes! Air France colors! I knew something looked familiar…

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Yeah, I like it except for the shoes and that hideous cluctch.

    • Anna

Oh, attagirl. Considering she showed up at the last event in some old Ann Taylor-esque number that was the only clean thing that she could find at the bottom of her closet, I’ll mostly take this.

That clutch needs to go back to the dye-to-match bridal section at Payless whence it came, though.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      I can’t handle the shoes.

    • flamingoNW

Like the shoes, don’t mind the bag, hate the sleeves

    • lundibleu

The dress is great, though the shoulders look rather like they’re there to give the impression of a cape more than anything. Love the colour though.

The shoes… eh, nah. Not so keen on them. And the clutch looks rather like an ice cube tray /bag out the freezer. Maybe she’s keeping a snack cool for later?

    • hughman

It’s a little “Mother of Three Gets Makeover on the Rachael Ray Show”.

    • Boulderista

Outfits like this remind me of the stereotypical out-of-work actor who waits tables … not everyone makes the jump from waitstaff to red carpet with grace and style … this isn’t bad but it isn’t great either though she looks good from the neck up.

    • Imasewsure

I’ll give her an Attagirl for support (but I really don’t like anything but the shoes and the hair and makeup… shhhhhhh)

    • marlie

The shoes an the clutch are big needle-scratches, but she really looks pretty fabulous. The dress is a great color, it look amazing on her figure, and her hair and makeup look nice.

    • teensmom99

I want the shoes-to wear with something else but these are total shoe porn for me *blushes*

    • Clydette Wantland

      Love the shoes!

    • Jackie4g

      How do you pronounce Ilincic?

      • Danielle

        Very carefully. ;)

      • Sarah

        Ill-in-chich. Serbian :)

    • Danielle

Rip off those God-awful sleeves and I’d give her a small werq.

    • Sophie

Very unflattering shoulders from the front.
Haven’t we seen those shoes before? I don’t remember where. I quite like them, but not with this dress and toe cleavage.

    • decormaven

Dress color is gorgeous on her. Shoes are nice, but not for this outfit. Ditch the Chiclet purse.

    • AnguaVonUberwald

I don’t like the dress. I don’t like the shoes. I don’t like the bag. But she looks happy? That’s all I got.

    • rawhide

She is beautiful and I’m liking the new hairdo and the makeup but the whole outfit is an egregious disaster! Can’t believe those beautiful designer clutch and shoes have been distastefully matched. She wore a nicer dress by the same designer for an event last year and that made her look so much younger.

    • KT

I’m squinting and shaking my head. I agree that the color and shape are good, and her makeup looks great. She also looks very confident in this, which helps. That’s the right haircut for her, but it’s looking raggedy in these photos. Condition those ends, girl.

The shoes and clutch absolutely do not go, and are almost ruining the look. And what the hell is happening with the tin foil on the back of the dress? There are just too many weird elements going on here; if this were more streamlined, it’d be killer. But you’re right — it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

    • Stella Zawistowski

I dunno…I think there are bodices that are much more flattering to the small of chest than this one is.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Aubergine is such a lovely color, and she is rocking it. DOP Uncles…the shoes are great but they don’t go and the clutch should be thrown out.

    • ShaoLinKitten

She was cloned from the same vat as Amy Poehler.

    • CPK1

love the dress. The shoes are beyond hiddy and the bag needs to self-combust asap

    • MaggieMae

Great smile and she is selling it.

    • demidaemon

No to puffy jacket clutches. I love the shoes, but I definitely see TLo’s point. The dress needs some judicious trimming. I would have liked this better as a sleeveless sheath.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

The dress is unusual and very cute on her. But Wonder Woman is gonna be so pissed when she finds her shoes missing.

      • Shawn EH

I think they’re pretty cool shoes, daring even. And the dress is sleek. It’s really the purse that got stuck at the 1950s prom.

    • trisker

Weird dress–what’s going on in back? Pleather?

    • quiltrx

The accessories almost keep me from even seeing the dress, they’re so bad. But what little I can see, this dress has serious back issues.

    • JP

The shoes are gorgeous, they just look like they don’t fit her right. Or go with that dress. Which is a lovely color, but not that cut.

    • Sweetvegan

Very cute sleeves – like a capelet.

    • Kent Roby

I hate the clutch and the shoes (and what they are doing to her feet), but, boy does she look awesome in her Olan Mills senior portrait close-up!

    • RuthGo

Those shoes would be killa with a pencil skirt and simple blouse. And in the right size. I seriously don’t know how these women walk around in shoes that look difficult to handle if they were custom made for you much less two sizes too big.

I love the back but I agree that the sleeves are problematic from the front. But she looks sooooooo much better in a color than those terrible neutrals.

    • EEKstl

I will give her the shoes but SOMEONE should have put a different nail color on her! Other than that, I actually like this.

    • Jacob Bowen

That clutch looks like an ice pack that my school gives to kids with “boo boos”.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

      She still bores me.

    • amaranth16

I think the hair is suuuper awkward. It’s sort of hovering away from her head. It looks like the flip-and-hairspray trick gone badly awry.

    • Paula

It’s just me or she is the blonde Katy Perry’s doppelgänger?
