Pairs Division: Karen Gillan and Matt Smith at the “Oculus” Screening

Posted on April 04, 2014

How freaking adorable:

Karen Gillan and Matt Smith attend screening of “Oculus” in Hollywood, California. Karen Gillan wore a Marc Jacob dress from the Spring 2014 collection paired with black pumps.

Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 Collection

We’re always urging male stars on the red carpet to lean in and kiss, in a totally inappropriate “show us your tits” kind of way, but we have to say, if these two leaned in and kissed? We’re pretty sure Tumblr would crack in half.

They’re both so spiffy, though! He’s gotten dressed up before, but we don’t think we’ve ever seen her in anything this fabulous. As a dress, it’s a little over-designed (Hello. It’s Marc Jacobs.) but the rest of her look is so pared down that she can make it work. Besides, she can handle tricky or over designed dresses better than the average gal or starlet. He looks pretty close to perfect, as he usually does when he puts on a suit.

We miss them on our TV. This movie looks … not good.

    Now kiss!

  • gayle

She looks fantastic! and they are simply adorable together.

  • Charm City

I was on board until I saw her nail polish; it really takes away from the power of the dress.

    • Grumpy Girl

Not only that, but the blue in that polish brings out the red in her hands/knuckles for a not very lovely look.

But I love her haircut and she looks delightful in the dress–now put her hands back out of sight.

    • CPK1

oh yes, just saw it. Yuck

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Oops, you’re right. I just saw that. Bad choice of color. Oh well.

    • marlie

The dress, hair and makeup are all so sophisticated, and the nailpolish reads as really juvenile to me.

    • Nicole C

I love how detail-oriented the BK’s are. All fashion commentators need to step up their game for me after regularly reading this site!

    • Scimommy

But it’s totally Amy Pond’s nail polish!!! Basically, I am choosing to see it as a nod to her time on Dr Who and as such I find it cute and adorable, along with the rest of her.

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

But it’s TARDIS blue nailpolish–she’s with her Doctor, for crying out loud!

  • LilyVanessi

Take off the sleeves and that dress would be perfect. Also, get her the right size in the shoes. He doesn’t need to change a thing.

  • Fact: I wear tiny gold star earrings regularly because I found them to be too adorable on the first look of adult Amy Pond.

  • Gatto Nero

She could use a couple inches off the length of the dress and a couple of shoe sizes down.
    Other than that, adorable.

  • deathandthestrawberry

That extra bit of fabric at the neckline would drive me crazy, but I’m just grinning at the sight of these two. I haven’t seen all the Clara episodes but I just don’t have the same affection for her as I still do for Amelia Pond.

    • majorbedhead

I think I miss Rory more than I miss Amy, but I agree with you on Clara. I don’t have much of a feel for her yet. It will be interesting to see her work with Capaldi, though.

Matt Smith looks divine in a suit and Karen rocks that short hair. I didn’t know if I’d like her without her Amy Pond hair, but she looks fantastic.

      • formerlyAnon

Couldn’t agree more with your opinions re: Rory, Amy & Clara.

    • ballerinawithagun

I don’t care for the neckline either. I know they were trying to utilize the beautiful edge of the lace but they should have made it a true boat neck if the wanted it to go straight across.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like Clara a lot and I don’t miss Amy, but I absolutely adore Karen Gillan and I miss having new youtube videos of her behind cameras in Doctor Who.

  • Sobaika

Obsessed with her nail polish. Her makeup overall makes the look much less dreary than it would’ve been.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Love the eyeliner. It is so easy to get that wrong.

  • redhead with tattoos

She needs a more saturated lipstick. I totally understand the clean look she was going for but I think the lipstick is too pale, and it’s making her face look washed out. From one pale redhead to another: you need a bit of color to your lips.

Not that she needed anything overly bright, just a slightly more saturated hue.

  • She looks a little like Debbie Reynolds when she was a youngster–c.f., “Singin’ in the Rain”

    • shirab

I get Shirley Jones circa, or a little earlier than, The Music Man.

    • Violentcello

      Good eye! She totally does.

  • CPK1

I love her hair. And yes, agreed, perfectly styled for the dress. She looks chic and beautiful

  • That’s the best example of nude lipstick I have seen. Perfect for her skin.

    • decormaven

This lass has some beautiful skin- it’s set off perfectly with the cosmetics. Snaps to the MUA.

    • lundibleu

It really is. And it’s also when she’s pulling off a look like this that you remember she was a model while she was studying and starting out acting. And how tall she is too.

  • Nancer

    Freaking adorable.

  • MilaXX

I really like her with the short hair. I think they both look great.

  • deelup

I hate Amy Pond and that translates to an irrational dislike of Karen. But she looks so awesome here that I have fallen in love with her. At least until I watch a Who episode with her again.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • Frank_821

She does have a certain something. good for her to be parlaying a film career in hollywood

any BKs in the US see her playing Jean Shrimpton. She pulled that off pretty well. convincing model

Matt look dressed up very nice

  • Tanya Wade

Everything from her on the head up is perfection. The eyes, the brows, the lips (and a well deployed light lip color), the hair, the earrings. Below the neck is good, but her face and hair are A+++.

  • marlie

She looks cute, and she’s managing to make that weird dress work, for the most part. Though the hem is a bit too long, and her shoes too big, and I *hate* the color of her nailpolish. And that non-color lipstick. UGH. He – looks freaking adorable.

    • JauntyJohn

gotta give it to you on the shoes — from the ankle down it looks like she’s playing dress up in her mommy’s high heels.

      • gabbilevy

The whole thing has a “playing dress up” look to it. Like she put the dress on backwards (and maybe pulled from granny’s closet), shoes too big, face undone. Still, it’s working rather better than it has any right to.

  • JauntyJohn

How effing STELLAR that Mr. Smith showed up for his buddy’s movie premier. None of this “I’m trying to take my career in a different direction from Who” business. Just a class act all the way.
I’ve said it before: I was impressed as hell Ms. Gillan for shaving her head for the role in “Guardians of the Galaxy” — in that as an ingenue that cascade of luxurious read hair was really a signature for her. Girl’s got game.
I love this dress on her. Great colors, very interesting but just shy of “busy.” Her styling is perfection.
He has a natural panache and looks great dressed up, down or un.

  • Kelly Sowers

Whoa. She looks like Audrey Hepburn in some of these shots.
    Holy cow.

  • Jessica Freeman

She needs just a touch of color on her lips, and to chop the sleeves off her dress. He looks swoon worthy.

  • This movie is brought to us by the WWE. Of course it’s not good.

    • demidaemon

OH, DEAR. They really have the monopoly on horrible movies that should probably be straight to DVD.

  • Jacob Bowen

Her face (minus her lips) with THAT HAIR is SO freakin adorable. That cut/styling is seriously perfect for her face!

  • kat89

I love the dress, but I hate the neckline. It always looks and feels like the dress is on backwards. Otherwise it’s totes adorbs…

  • Sarah

I think that maybe that dress is hideous. BUT she looks really pretty in it, so between her smile, her lovely head, and her natty date, she’s werqing it.

  • lrober03

I love that hair style on her, but I think I prefer it with a little volume/fluff, instead of being plastered down and shiny

  • eruannalle

her ill-fitting shoes are killing me, but that’s honestly the only complaint i have (i’m even digging the nailpolish). they’re both just too cute.

  • EEKstl

My Pet Peeve Alert with the ill-fitting shoes but it’s an interesting dress.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

How can they walk in them?!

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

    ugh. the nails bug.

  • carolynmo

He’s going to be at the St. Louis comic on this weekend! If I can’t see you two, I’m certainly going to see him!

  • I would never have guessed that she was MADE for a pixie cut. She looks spectacular! And it’s ridiculous how much Matt can wear a suit.

  • Janet B

    They are adorable.
Too bad she doesn’t own a pair of fabulous black pumps.

  • WendyD

Matt’s hair is growing back! PRAISE TRENZALORE!
I love the two of them so much. I saw these pictures early this morning on twitter and they warmed this Whovian’s heart so much. I love how much they continue to support each other post-Who. She is a divine goddess in person. I’ve basked in her presence back when she was still working on DW in Cardiff and I don’t know how she can be so beautiful and be real!

  • Daktari100

I don’t know why people find him attractive from the neck up. He needs a headectomy.

  • crash1212

    THAT’S how you rock a cat-eye.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Please someone teach me how to do the cat-eye!

      • Granny panties

I find gel eyeliner easier than liquid. Loreal tatto comes with the required tiny brush, but get a spare. Keep the spare moistened with make up remover to edit and clean line. Try holding a credit card along the temple for the flick. Do the harder eye first, then match it. Takes practice and lack of pre party wine.

        • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Thank you…there was a lack of make up direction in my past.

        • formerlyAnon

Thank god I’m aging out of any makeup trend as pronounced as a real cat-eye. I just don’t have the dexterity or the patience to get those instructions down cold.

        • Tatiana Luján

          gel eyeliner is pure magic.

        • Also, don’t try to do it with closed eyes – it doesn’t give the right line. Tilt your head back so you are peeping down your nose and it gives the right line.

          • jay

YES. the day I learned about only closing your eyes halfway when you do eyeliner was the best thing.

  • KT

    They do look quite cute.

And actually, I’ve heard that this movie is very smart and original. Just checked rotten tomatoes– it’s at 100% as of now.

  • Sophie

Hate the neckline and the nail polish, but apart from that they look good. I love that last picture of them smiling at each other.

  • snarkykitten

Not really liking the slicked down hair on her. or the weak lipstick. but the dress is nice.

  • Granny panties

    They both look amazing!!!

  • Esz

Im curious as to how these lasses WALK with such shoes that are two sizes too big for them. How is it possible? You’d look like a right twat….anyone been to one of these things and seen how the stars manage to walk in their too big shoes?

  • Gloriana Reginata

I don’t know whether that dress really goes with such pale makeup: from a distance she looks bleached out against its dramatic darks. I was really surprised when I got to the close-up, where her face is absolutely stunning.

  • formerlyAnon

I enjoyed everything about this but the swoop up in the neckline right under her chin and that shade of blue on her nails.

  • Pterodactyl111

Wow, her hair and make-up look great like that!

  • FridaStaire

Yes nasty nails! But otherwise cut as…

  • judybrowni

Give me a break: that dress is a walking horror.

Even overlooking the mismatched Addams family funereal upholstery fabric, and the goiter cover neckline, Its shape makes a skinny girl look both flat and lumpy.

  • Fred Vaughn

    Karen is EVERYTHING here!

  • RuthGo

Are you guys not grading anymore? I’m sorry if I missed that post. I love, love, love that dress and I think she looks just smashing in it. And he’s holding up his end of the bargain. They clean up very, very well.
