Pairs Division: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone at “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ Paris Premiere

Posted on April 14, 2014

We always say true style is about knowing the venue and dressing accordingly. We figure that must be why they chose to get all seriously serious and severe with their fashion for the Paris premiere. It also explains the very Parisian haughtyface they’re both sporting.

He’s too boring and she’s probably a bit too interesting, if that makes any sense. They look a little unbalanced. And all that black seems a little heavy and serious for your superhero romp. We don’t dislike the dress on her (although we wonder if it isn’t a bit more than she can handle). It’s just that if we were in charge, we’d have probably put him in a blue or gray plaid suit to set the dress off a little more. A little pattern and color would have made them, as a duo, look much better.

Also, it’s a bit early in the poledance for him to be looking this sloppy. Shave that face and button that jacket.

    • In_Stitches

She needed some sexy stilettos, not prim ballerina pumps for that dress. Makeup and those earring cuffs are flawless though. Perfectly paired. From the ankles up, I’d call it a werq, but those shoes really kill the look.

      • Ragnarockette

I also think a contrasting belt would have helped immensely. As it is, it kind of looks like a bunchy garbage bag with an undefined waist.

        • Sophie

I don’t know, at least this belt is large enough to be visible. It might not be in another colour, but it does define her waist.

        • melisaurus

I would actually add a more minimal belt. I don’t know about color but this adds too much visual weight. Maybe navy…

    • deelup

Come and get your black bin bags. They’re long and black and slender.

Heavy duty black bin bags, no matter what your gender…

      • cocohall

You are so clever. It was my first thought too. I had the impulse to head out to my garage and see if Emma had raided my stash of trash bags.

      • DinaSews

Funny. Long ago I made some dance costumes out of faux leather. I think my 10 year old daughter made a similar garment out of the leftover fabric.

      • Kent Roby

I never thought I’d look at tiny little Emma Stone while thinking “Hefty, Hefty, Hefty”!

    • Watterson

While I’m not super feeling the Matrix couture, Emma’s collar bones look like they could kill a man and she’s smirking like she already has so that’s selling me on it.

      • Judy_S

Agreed. I give her credit for making a garbage bag with studs look classy..

    • ballerinawithagun

      Faux leather dress, revolting.

      • Ginger

It’s not faux leather. It’s plastic. She’s wearing a plastic dress. On purpose.

        • lunchcoma

Imagine the boob sweat. And the leg sweat. And the everywhere else sweat.

          Ick.

          • Ginger

It’s what we, in the running/cycling community, affectionately refer to as the swamp-ass factor. You’re welcome.

        • formerlyAnon

          Plastic? LANVIN?

That far-off distant whoof! was my last shred of faith.

    • RussellH88

I like the dress in theory, but it like way too much dress. It looks like a very expensive trashbag.

      • Stella Zawistowski

Not even that expensive of a trash bag.

      • Jacob Bowen

Yeah, it needs to be tailored down a bit, it is WAY too poofy.

    • Tanya Wade

I remember when I discovered pleather in high school and made my first garment from it.

      Pleather.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Yep. My first thought was “Why is she wearing Pleather?” Why, oh, why?

    • ojosazules

      The ankle bows wreck it.

      • Janet B

        Too sweet?

        • Kikishua

For me mostly because mismatched to each other (left retied too quickly after coming undone just before stepping out?)

    • Anna

That is the most dramatic-looking garbage bag I’ve ever seen. Shoes are a sadder version of Lara Flynn Boyle’s Golden Globes ballet pumps.

Andrew is so excited to begin his first day working for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

    • Grumpy Girl

Je ne comprends pas. This look (on either/both) just doesn’t appeal to me. I get that hers should be cool and edgy, but, mais non. And especially for a Spiderman movie, I’d like to see some color. A deep blue instead of black, even.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

The dress kinda looks like something you would expect a villain to wear to the charity ball being held by the hero (in alter ego mode). In that sense it’s a success (even if it’s an ugly dress)

    • DominoEstella

OH…. I HATE that dress. blech. faux leather? gross.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

To these jaded old eyes that dress looks like apiece of upholstery vinyl someone haphazardly tacked around her.

      • decormaven

Tuck and roll, and not even a good job, at that.

    • Capt. Renault

Hefty has an amazing range of products.

      • cocohall

Yes, and who wants to deal with expensive dry cleaning when you can get your garden hose to do the job? Hose off Your Hefty! Laundry has never been so easy!

        • Capt. Renault

I knew Silver Linings Playbook was going to start a trend…

    • marlie

I’m amazed that Emma is able to make a Hefty trash bag look this good. It’s an ugly dress, but for the venue, it’s quite on point. I could see Marion Cotillard make this work as well. Emma’s hair and makeup are gorgeous, though, and I like her earring-thingys.

      He’s “meh.”

      • Sarah

Yeah the ear cuffs are cool. Seems like ear jewelry is a trend right now, which is something I can get behind.

    • Kent Roby

That is a mess of a dress.

      • demidaemon

She would look awesome in either of those dress, especially with her coloring.

    • Jessica Freeman

She is dressed in full on shittery. That’s all I got.

      • @Biting Panda

        That’s all you need.

      • Introspective

couldnt have put it better. and really you have to suck balls to make someone this easy to dress look so cray, lanvin.

    • Richard Banger

She needs to gain weight. I’m concerned.

    • ashtangajunkie

I love her hair and makeup here, but she is absolutely not pulling off that dress at all. That dress is like “lazy dominatrix” or something.

    • @Biting Panda

‘Hate’ is a strong word. But I’m using it here. I hate that dress. I hate those shoes. I hate how utterly boring they both look, because I am not buying the effort of being Branjelina 2.0 here.

      • demidaemon

I’m with you. I also am feeling the hate for the dress and lamery going on in these photos in PARIS of all places.

    • colleenjanel

You can tell when the fashion world gets tired of a trend, because they usually swing wildly in the opposite direction with reckless abandon. We’ve gone from the invisible nude lip trend to this hideous bright orange that looks good on exactly NO ONE except perhaps Lupita.

      • schadenfreudelicious

So not liking this traffic cone orange lip trend….

    • cocohall

I am keenly aware that the superhero movies are not targeted to me; but I honestly can’t fathom how Andrew Garfield and Tobey McGuire before him are qualified to play a superhero. They both seem more suited to playing third string detective who shares the frame with a roomful of other actors, rather than the lead. Obviously it is all about the spider costume, but this sad looking effort does NOTHING for him. As for Miss Emma, how do you go from her blue and white striped lace dress suitable for any Amish function to this belted Hefty Bag? This is not your first time at the rodeo, kiddos. If you want to be in these sort of tent-pole movies that rake in millions (billions?) and cash the big checks associated with them. at least play the part and dress the f*ck up.

      • alyce1213

I’m not a supehero movie fan either, but I did see one (the first) Spiderman movie, and I was vaguely familiar with the comic books growing up. Spidey is different than most others. He was created to be a hero that young readers could relate to — a nerdy teen experiencing teen angst, self-doubts, loneliness, etc. So I think the casting of both McGuire and Garfield was spot-on.

        • cocohall

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you. The BKs are a fabulous source of info!

      • Sarah

I am a fan of superhero movies, and Tobey never owned that role, at least for me. He just read false and older than the character, to me. I really didn’t like him in it. Andrew Garfield is really good, however, so I would agree with @alyce1213:disqus about who Spiderman is supposed to be – he is perfect for being angst-y & rakish & nerdy all in one.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I agree. Tobey did the awkward nerd bit fine, but the heroic bit wasn’t plausible. I think Andrew Garfield does it much better – and he is a lifelong fan, apparently, so I think he gets it more.

          • demidaemon

Exactly what I was going to type. Andrew pretty much idolizes this character, so he is going to bring as much as he can to the role. I think Tobey looked at it as another paycheck. To be fair, that view is colored by my distaste for Tobey as an actor, but that’s how I feel.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

That is a seriously WTF dress, especially on teeny little Emma. To quote Addison DeWitt in “All About Eve”, “You’re too short for that gesture.” I do like the shoes, but not with that dress. Once again I am struck with the thought that she has one of the most striking pairs of eyes on this earth. Him? Meh.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It’s a funny thing to say considering she’s wearing makeup, but she looks strangely colorless. I blame it on the lack of blush.

    • j_am

Ok, I’m just going to say it… I can’t get on board with Lanvin. I know he’s a huge favorite of so many, but most of his stuff looks baggy and frumpy – even on models.

    • Glam Dixie

I have that dress in white! It’s got a cute red tie at the top and someone sewed the bottom shut but I swear it’s the same dress.

    • jilly_d

Her makeup is giving me a sad. I’ll refrain from commenting on that “dress”.

    • SophieCollier

When I look at that dress, I can hear that sort of sticky sound vinyl makes when you touch it. Lots of that sound.

    • FancyPhilly

I don’t like the bust on the dress, too fussy. But I appreciate the weight and fabric of it. It looks good, and this is not a body snark, it adds some weight to her figure. I’m going to give this one a solid B grade on her part, just wish the make-up was different, a little too consumptive for a red head.

    • Janet B

Is it the end of a long day for him? He looks exhausted.

    • redhead with tattoos

I think she can handle the dress, but the shoes are wrong. The ribbons/flaps/whatever are distracting and the way they cut her legs in two at the ankle is wrong for the hem.

    • kmk05

Oh no. That dress in conjunction with the makeup makes her look 20 years older. He’s too bland for words here, even with the potential of that skinny tie (which he wears well).

    • Anplica Fiore

      Dress is an oil-slick.

    • MilaXX

That dress looks a little too fashion-y for her. He looks like he peeked in his the previous post of them and is barely managing to look presentable now.

    • B_C_J

This is a complicated dress & I think that it is more suited for an editorial. She appears to be pulling it off but is not being helped by his very pedestrian suit. Her dress requires him to be more polished. They look a bit awkward together.

    • teensmom99

I don’t generally mind a wonky hem but this is all too much dress for her as you said and all that asymmetry is a big part of it. If this had been a somewhat more streamlined version, a necklace would have helped. I mean, I think her look needs a necklace but Lord knows she doesn’t need more going on here.

    • mlle

She doesn’t even look like herself here. Not a fan.

    • twocee

      Leather trash bag.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Its the make a dress out of a roll of black pleather (sp?) challenge! C’mon its what we are ALL thinking…
(and if it doesn’t even look good on the model…)

    • ChristySchiff

I miss the points of the pairs division posts. How do I know how harshly to judge them without the cold, hard math?

Seriously, though: the points were hilarious. Bring back the points!

    • Danielle

Not a fan of Lanvin to begin with, but this is especially bad. Kim K is probably salivating.

      • demidaemon

It does look like a Kim K dress. I hope she never gets a hold of it.

    • melanie0866

And you all are giving her a pass on wearing a belted plastic tarp?

      • Shawn EH

Lanvin often looks like it’s falling apart, but it’s really expertly fitted. They’re tricky.

    • Capt. Renault

I didn’t even notice that the backdrop was upside down, that’s how bad that dress is.

    • NMMagpie

I just keep thinking if this dress would not look better on her after she has had a sandwich or two.

Emma is making the mom in me come out.

    • another_laura

I’m going to ignore him because, well, he has no charisma and so blah. Her: I really like her head and I think the dress is okay, except that “faux leather” makes me think of shopping for a car where the standard issue is plastic, but Mini Cooper calls it “leatherette” and there’s this song: “Warm … Leatherette” by The Normal. So this is a weird train of thought…..

      • Shawn EH

Not really that weird, that’s a total Grace Jones dress. But I do think Emma is pulling it off.

    • BLauD

Leather tarp, extra-tricky belt, and shoes that are tied all wonky. No, Miss Emma does not get a pass on this one.

    • what not

Am I the only one who doesn’t like Lanvin? I once saw something that claimed Alber Elbaz to be a master at draping and fitting a woman’s body, but every time I see Lanvin in the wild I think it looks sloppy and unflattering. And I love me some artsy, weird cuts, it just hangs all wrong to my eye.

    • MannahattaMamma

droopy and drippy and ill-fitting. and that’s just the boy. haven’t even started on the dress yet.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

It’s more than she can handle.

    • CT14

Why is one shoe tied in back and the other in front?

I don’t like it. I don’t like that dress on her either.

Uncles are right that he’s too sloppy for the pole dance.

    • formerlyAnon

He looks so much more like Peter Parker than Spiderman.
I am simply going to assume that no Lanvin dress can actually look as half-assed and cheap and Halloween-costume as that dress is photographing.

    • Little_Olive

Huh. I should hate that dress because of the garbage bag thing, but I find myself really liking it. Perfect styling, too. Great deployment of the up-to-the-brow so French eyeshadow.
He needs to step it up.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t like the dress at all. It looks like such cheap vinyl fabric. Kinda like the shoes, though.

    • Guest

OUT! I hate it and you’re right, like you always are, T Lo. God, you guys are smart.

Also: GLAAADIATOR! as blatted by Elizabeth Taylor.

    • nannypoo

I usually love the way she dresses, but this is the worst I have ever seen her look. I hate it all – the dress, the hair, the makeup, the shoes – I don’t know how it could be worse. And as for him – if they really are a couple, why does she never have razor burn?

    • demidaemon

Put on a belt, Andrew! I kind of hate that dress. I don’t know. It just doesn’t seem quite right for her.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

FAUX leather dress? You’re telling me that Lanvin cannot make a dress out of real leather? REALLY? We’re resorting to nasty-ass plastic in haute couture now are we?
      Disappointing!

    • Tricia Rose

I can’t get past her makeup… yuck… or the oddly shaped mis-shaven mess of a man standing next to her…

    • Clash D

She looks like a movie star. He…looks like a salesperson.

    • elemspbee

she looks terrible. That dress is eating her up. And is there a rite aid nearby where she can buy another lipstick color? He–clean up and stop grinding your freakin teeth.

    • wisdomy

That dress appears to outweigh her.

    • BeeBeauNYC

Why is the background upside down? Is that a Spider Man thing, being inverted?

    • Lattis

It always gives me a jolt to see Andrew Garfield because he looks identical to my son’s high school friend. Identical.
