Olivia Munn in Valentino at the “Deliver Us From Evil” Photocall

Posted on April 21, 2014

We’ve officially been doing this whole red carpet gig a long time. Why? Because things that were trendy when we started our red carpet commentary are coming back in style, forcing us to try not to repeat jokes and lines we made seven years ago. If we were the truly lazy types, we’d just find some old Cameron Diaz post with us saying “A ROMPER?!?! FORMAL SHORTS?!?!? Poodles, we just CAN’T!!!!”

But we suppose time and old age have settled in. We must be getting mellow.

Because we don’t actually hate this. We definitely would have suggested a bangle or a giant cocktail ring or something like that just to punctuate the look, but aside from that lack, we’re okay with this. There’s something kind of appealing about how clean and unadorned the look is, even if we think it could have used a little bit of something. The shoes help tremendously. We’re not fans of the naked shoe generally, but a pump would have looked trashy somehow. And besides, these are a fun, eye-catching pair. We’re surprised to say it, but this might be one of her better RC looks in a while.

I’d have done something to add a bit more glam to it. More jewerly, methinks.

    And I see nipples.

    • LipstickForPigs

Yeah, a hoik would have helped the bodice quite a lot, but her face is so lovely.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

Who cares. Nips are fun. And I agree. She needs a fun necklace with it, for sure.

      • scoobynacks

Meh, sometimes fun, sometimes not. Depends on the garment and the intention of the designer/wearer. This isn’t a case of being a prude vs. being a hippie. I think her apparent lack of bra is leading to some slight bodice creasing which is making the lines less than they could be. I don’t think we can blame it entirely on the pose. To me the color and fabric which seems more professional and is meant to contrast with the fact that it’s a frickin’ romper, a type of outfit generally meant for a child than only some adults can pull off. That juxtaposition would be more interesting visually sans distractions on the bodice such as the creases and nips. Sleekness should be the order of the day.

    • onefifteen

Fun necklace or skinny belt with color.

  • Akemi

    Those shoes are so cute!

  • Jessica Freeman

The most interesting part of her outfit is the BACK of her shoes.

    • Judy_S

I agree–but I kind of like the idea of her appearing so unadorned except for that.

      • Jessica Freeman

As many BK’s are quick to point out, Rompers pose quite an issue when going to the bathroom. Having to take down the entirety of your outfit to pee, well even a necklace would get in the way. I give her points based on strategy alone.

    • …that’s also where the most interesting part of Olivia Munn is usually.

  • semirose

A bracelet would have been nice but this is pretty cute. I think it helps that her toes aren’t gripping for dear life on those shoes which imo is the biggest sin of naked shoes. Plus that heel is fantastic.

    • J. Preposterice

Emma Watson’s toes weren’t frantic, either. I think it means the shoes fit, instead of being totally the wrong size.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Have to say, I think she looks pretty hot in this. If you’re going to wear a romper, this was an excellent choice.

    • Chuck Barthelme

Also, better in navy than red I think.

      • barbarienne

Huh, I was thinking the dark color on the dark-haired woman was kind of bland. Not that red would have been better, but I would love to have seen this a couple of shades lighter blue, or perhaps a jewel-tone purple or green.

  • Sarah

I love navy, and I do like her shoes, but those creases and cuffs are serving me elementary school polyester Girl Scout Uniform realness and Uncles, I just can’t.

    • E2_Remote

All you just said + nipples = no bueno in my book.

      • CPK1

I am not a fan of the visible nip. I know we all have them but we don’t have to see them. Same reasoning for camel toe.

    • It’s the sort of lacrosse uniform a very aggressive neighbouring school would wear in Enid Blyton stories. Plus nipples, because the girls at other schools are always sluts.

      • CPK1

        Totally Mallory Towers

        • I read those last year for the first time and was totally dismayed to discover that my mother seems to have named me for the bitch of the school.

          • CPK1

That is hilarious. I read them as a child and so wanted to be Darrell.

  • E2_Remote

I can’t see past her raisin smuggling attempt.

  • Janet B

    Strangely, a bit stark.

  • kimmeister

    1) Wow, her makeup colors don’t look awful, for once!
    2) She is clearly a little chilly
    3) The romper is erasing her hips
    4) Wait a second, this movie has the same title as the most disturbing documentary I’ve ever seen. That’s too bad.

    • demidaemon

I’m pretty sure this movie will be horrible, going on Miss Munn’s hit or miss project choice.

  • kim bunchalastnames

plus: her hair (which usually seems like an afterthought, or like it should be on a woman far older than she is) looks FABULOUS.

  • Kbear

it looks like my old PE uniform from high school

  • frannyprof

I will never sign off on anyone over the age of 7 wearing a romper.

  • barbarienne

Not replying to any individuals, but I have to say this:

FFS, people, women have nipples. Nothing short of armor plating is going to protect your delicate eyes from that reality 100% of the time. If you don’t like it, don’t look at women.

GET OVER IT. Just effing get over it. Goddamn.

    • sugarkane105

She’s got some nice bubbies too. My nips would be looking off in different directions, as if mad with one another.

      • Sarah

Divergent: The Story of My Nips. So true.

    • Sam Smith

Seriously, I recently bough a new strapless bra and it had modesty roses for my nips. And it was also lined and had structure, so really not even sure what the point was of the modesty roses. I mostly prefer unlined bras and they are hard to find these days due to the discrimination against nipples.

      • barbarienne

Cacique (for larger ladies) makes a very straightforward unlined cotton/spandex no-wire bra that I love love love. It holds my girls firmly, makes them rounder and higher than their 40+ years would suggest possible, and is surprisingly comfortable to wear all day.

And yes, sometimes my nips are evident. And I don’t give a crap.

        • Sarah

I hate overly padded too. I don’t need it! Cacique is nice, and Kohl’s has a huge selection of bras, too. You can find pretty much any style in there if you root for it.

    • Kent Roby

Furthermore (I hope you’re sitting down for this), men have nipples, too!

      • Glam Dixie

        o_o Shocking!

      • barbarienne

        You don’t say!

Hmmm. Trying to recall if people get annoyed by visible man-nips. The most I can come up with is when guys wear white dress shirts without undershirts and you can see their skin tone. But that’s not the same.

        • demidaemon

They don’t. People find it “sexy,” usually. Another example of the ever-present double-standard.

        • We’ve seen plenty of male celebs get ridiculed for having visible nipples through their clothing. Simon Cowell got reamed for it.

          • barbarienne

Jeezum crow. What did people expect Simon to do? Smoothing pasties? Only wear really heavy clothing?

          • Wear an undershirt if you’re going to wear a shirt tight enough to show off your nipples.

      • kimmeister

I was going to say the same thing, but figured a gentleman would step up to bat!

      • marlie

    • demidaemon

I think the bigger problem is that is causes one to wonder whether or not Miss Munn is actually wearing a bra, since we can’t be sure of that fact based on prior appearances.

    • Evan

I remember when people were complaining that you could see Rihanna’s nipples in that red Alaia gown she wore to the Grammys last year and I thought to myself, “Big deal. She still looks gorgeous.” Now everyone’s defending the sight of nipples. Not saying you said anything, but there seems to be a double standard about who can show nipples and who can’t, probably because people think Rihanna shows too much skin all of the time.

      • holla

also, remember anne hathaway’s pink oscar dress? people were all over those nips. Why defend nips now?

        • Evan

Well those were nipple darts, so that’s a little different since they were part of the construction of the dress. But yeah, idk what the vnl (visible nipple line) is always a big deal.

  • @Biting Panda

Eh, she’s a neckerchief away from looking like a flight attendant.

    • Evan

Flight attendant going to the beach!

  • flamingoNW

    Really? Yawn….

  • JasmineAM

I see a titscrepancy and her makeup (which I’m not even sure if she’s wearing any) looks awful. Cute shoes and jumper though.

  • teensmom99

Yeah, who would think that shorts could be someone rc personal best?

    • Heather

      Sad, n’est-ce pas?

  • jk47

I’d like to see the back. Shorts that tight in the front could very easily end up with serious wedgie scenario in the rear – requiring constant picking.

  • jw_ny

For a photo call…it’s ok, I guess. The shoes, while quite fun, just weren’t enough to elevate this out of the ho-hum category though…needed something else.

  • Anna

Well, she’s certainly looked a lot stranger and more bizarre.

Enhh, I’ll give her a pass. I’m feeling generous-ish today. Shoes are pretty cool.

  • Kayceed

Eh. This looks like the “before” picture – any minute her crew is going to swoop in and do her hair, makeup, jewels and give her a proper outfit to wear.

  • Cyprienne Zed

    Shoooooes. *grabby hands*

  • marlie

It’s fine, though a bit snoozeworthy (the outfit AND the wearer). But those shoes are TO DIE.

    • Jacob Bowen

Yeah, on someone with an actual personality I could see this being so much better. She doesn’t have any sense of personal style, so there is no way to make this outfit say, “Olivia Munn”.

      • demidaemon

        SHADE. I love it.

  • Tanya Wade

    Simplicity is the keynote!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Well, I think that ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

  • ellabob

Shoes are great – HATE the “romper” look, description and design… what the fuck – are we comparing women to children? Rompers are for babies – period..

  • Claudia Berry

And of course, styled by Lupita’s fairy godmother, Micaela Erlanger.

  • Imasewsure

I hate rompers but this is cute if just a bit underdone. Those shoes are killa and her casual hair and makeup is working.

  • Qitkat

The red version is prettier. But those shoes are killer. Love the striped interior!

  • Melanie

I hate rompers, but this might have looked a bit better with a cute belt or scarf/sash thing across the waist, or even a cute cardigan. Maybe some bangles or some killer earrings too. The shoes are to DIE though.

  • decormaven

If you have to get to the bottom of a look to find its most interesting point, then you probably have lost most of your potential audience. Shoes are cute, but outfit/hair is a snooze.

  • Tracy_Flick

Too tight and too short. It’s too boring to get away with looking that uncomfortable.

  • MilaXX

This fits her better than a lot of things she typically wears.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

This is a romper for athletically built women, and that’s Olivia to a tee. This is one time where a small but edgy belt would elevate the look.

  • Sophie

Nice rings. I’m against rompers in general, but this is probably one of the more inoffensive ones, due to its navy colour and lack of print. It seems rather tight around the chest.

  • ballerinawithagun

I rather like this for some reason, even though it reminds me of my junior high (it wasn’t middle school yet back them) gym uniform, which was navy and snapped up the front. Revolting, or was that just that junior high smell. Smells like teen spirit.

  • alyce1213

The head’s fine and the feet are fun, but no to rompers, especially with cuffs.

  • Lori

It’s working better on her than on the model, but that’s damning with faint praise. The top is too tight and those seam things on the shorts are weird. And of course it’s a romper. I don’t care how many people wear them, I’m sticking with my firm belief that rompers are for toddlers. The best an adult can hope for from a romper is, “It’s not as terrible as it could have been” and that’s a sad thing to say about an outfit.

    • demidaemon

That last statement was pretty much my comment on the outfit. I’m not singing her praises here.

  • demidaemon

Agreed. As a romper goes, this isn’t horrible. But it needed something other than a statement shoe. Even when Miss Munn is showing her best, she still comes across as unfinished.

  • THOSE. SHOES. So great!

  • matildarf

I LOVE those shoes. But I was cute and stylish in the 80s. NOT a put down.

  • Anathema_Device

Love the shoes, dislike the romper. I don’t like rompers and formal shorts in general, but even if this were a dress with this styling, she’d need a bracelet or necklace or something. It is just a navy expanse.

  • Laylalola

I have to make myself check if skinny-leg jeans or boot-leg cut/flair are the style, because what’s in has alternated three times now since I was a teen.

  • Synnae

Guys – what about the nipples poking through? I like the look although it is one accessory short but those nipples. I am just totally distracted.

  • MannahattaMamma

I love those shoes but I stand by my convictions. NO ROMPERS IF YOU’RE OVER FIVE.

  • Arelis Victor

    awful!! Too tight. Uniboob. Nippletastic.

  • Danielle

My kingdom for a skinny belt!

  • TLJezebel

Cuffs on a romper are just a little too twee for me.

  • oohsparkley!

Brighter lipstick, earrings and a cuff and it might have been a werq.

  • Heather

She always looks stoned to the gills to me. Also, she forgot her lipstick.

  • amaranth16

I love that you can see her freckles. Three cheers for a bare face that might actually BE a bare face!

  • Gatto Nero

I hate rompers on anyone over the age of 4.
I even hate the word “romper.”
