Maggie Gyllenhaal for The Edit Magazine

Posted on April 25, 2014

This would normally be the point where we get all faux-exasperated with Maggie and shriek “SEE? SEE HOW GOOD YOU CAN LOOK IF YOU JUST WASH YOUR FACE AND HANDS?” Or something.

Maggie-Gyllenhaal-The-Edit-Magazine-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Maggie Gyllenhaal is featured in The Edit magazine photographed by Carlotta Manaigo and styled by Karina Givargisoff. Top by Chloé | Skirt by Vionnet | Pumps by Sophia Webster | Earrings and Ring by Maria Black | Cuffs by Alexander McQueen.

“I am way more WILD in my CHARACTERS than I am in real life… It’s cool to IMAGINE what that would be like…”

“I REMEMBER the SHOCK of being told I didn’t cut it… Coming to terms with what you’re capable of is important…”

“The UPSIDE about getting OLDER is the deepening of experience, the ability to be vulnerable and OPEN…”

But she’s had something of a style breakthrough in recent weeks, so we’re inclined to go easy on her this time. We know she’ll disappoint us again on the red carpet. They always do, darlings. But for now, she seems to have found her look. Or more accurately, other people found it and made her start wearing it. Either way, this pseudo-retro-with-a-hint-of-modernity thing works really well for her.

Having said that, we really don’t like that Jil Sander top in the second pic or the bodice on the Prabal Gurung in the last one. Was there a “deflated boobs” theme going on here or something?

That first picture is pretty goddamn fantastic.

She looks great here. I haven’t seen her in much, but I love her for some reason.

    • Watterson

I feel exactly the same way about her. I haven’t actually seen her in that much, but I’m thrilled every time she pops up anywhere.

    • Rhonda Shore

Absolutely…those pastels are just fantastic for her.

    • Lucía Gavello

She’s still running on the fuel of “Secretary” for me, but I also loved her in “Crazy Heart” and “Sherrybaby”, both of which I reccomend. She really looks gorgeous here.

      • Clash D

She’s also in one of the Batman movies, I forget which one.

        • Lucía Gavello

Yes, she was Rachel in The Dark Night, but that character is beneath her IMO. Then again, It probably paid well, momma needs her granny dresses.

      • MartyBellerMask

        Oh, Sherrybaby killed me.

    • ccinnc

Yes. And I actually gasped at the 3rd.

    • musicandmochi

      It is, indeed!
Also, MAD props for the My Fair Lady Reference, TLo! Love you guys!

  • Gatto Nero

    Gorgeous, all of it.
That Lanvin coat is giving me palpitations.
Wish I could chop all my hair off, throw on some red lipstick, and look half this good.

  • NMMagpie

That third shot is freaking timeless.

    Agreed about the squashed boobs.

    • ceceliadid

Timeless is exactly right. The styling is brilliant for her. Stunning across the decades, with 1950’s leading the way.

  • Anna

Those shots of her in the DKNY and the Lanvin are just breathtaking.

    • Gatto Nero

She looks best in the unfussy clothes with very clean lines.
I’d like to see her in this type of look more often.

      • Anna

Agreed, she’s very attractive and I’m all for being unique but those arty/bohemian/granny ensembles she tends to favour are really distracting.

        • holla

maybe she’s talking about the granny ensembles in her first quote.

        • Trent

Truth? I never really thought she was “very attractive” at all but HOLY CRAP SHE LOOKS AMAZING HERE. Just stunning. Hair, makeup, retro-modern fashion, all of it. She needs to kidnap that stylist and use him/her EVERY DAY.

          • Anna

A friend covering TIFF invited me to tag along to an event she was covering one year and MG was there. She’s definitely not your typical starlet, but in person she’s got a unique sex appeal, which of course doesn’t always translate in photos when she’s wearing some weird Value Village ensemble. She’s seems very at ease with herself.

But yes, these looks in this editorial are HER LOOKS for sure.

          • Trent

I don’t know why, but “Value Village ensemble” just made me snort Diet Mountain Dew through my nose. ( :

And as someone who is absolutely NOT photogenic in the least (but tries to dress reasonably well) I get your point about in-person magnetism vs. candid photos. Sometimes it’s shocking how different people seem in the flesh.

          • Anna

Seeing someone in person makes a lot of difference for sure. She’s not “in-you-face-hot” perhaps, like some of her peers, but she definitely has a way about her. I appreciate that subtle/quiet type of self-assuredness that you sometimes have to see for yourself in person.

    • Valdri8

      Serious coat porn

    • stellamaris73

      Absolutely. Stunning!

  • melanie0866

I usually skip the magazine spreads, because they usually don’t look anything like the person in normal life. But I was excited to see Maggie in clothes she didn’t pick out herself. She looks lovely, except for that breast-binding top.

  • Ginger

I love her. She’s just so stunning.

  • Danielle

    Living for the first shot.

  • Betsy

One, three, and four are great. I’m not digging the bikini and towel or the last one.

  • Alicia

I can’t look at the pictures, the random capsing of those quotes makes me crazy.

    • sugarkane105

I CAN’T look at the PICTURES… the random CAPSING of those quotes makes me CRAZY.

      • Let it out

It’s PERPLEXING, isn’t IT??? But do look at the pix, they are quite lovely.

        • Alicia

They are, but I have to put my thumb over the text bits.

          • Let it out

      • formerlyAnon

I didn’t know who to reply to, but all of you are gems who are entertaining me greatly.

        • demidaemon

I’m with you. Loving the affect here. I just wish someone could explain to me why this happened with the quotes.

    • Violentcello

Thank fuck I’m not the only one.

      • Constant Reader

Me too. It’s VERY annoying. Or very ANNOYING. OR BOTH.

    • marlie

I had to reread the quote, because I was trying to figure out if there was some sort of theme or trend with the highlighted words (there doesn’t seem to be). WEIRD.

    • Sonny

I thought TLo was giving us a message in code or something. No such luck.

      • Alicia

… just needs some tears falling to be top notch emo poetry.

        • decormaven

          Killing it!

        • demidaemon

Sounds like haiku written on a meth binge.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Nice to see her getting it right for once, because she’s beautiful, and too often the clothes she wears detract from that.

  • another_laura

She’s so elegant here, it’s beautiful (ugly Prabal Gurung dress notwithstanding). Maggie, I’m begging you, remember this!

  • GillianHolroyd

That over-the-shoulder shot is breathtaking. She was made to wear bias cut satin evening gowns.

  • Bexxx

She REALLY looks GREAT in these photos. LOVE that first look, she can really WORK the PALE COLORS.

  • B_C_J

She looks glorious especially in the over the shoulder photo

  • MannahattaMamma

If they ever decide to remake “The Thin Man” movies (which they shouldn’t, which means they probably will), then Maggie could play the Myrna Loy character: smart, funny, beautiful, utterly her own person.

    • Nancer

I LOVE those movies! Glamorous, funny, very chic…. William Powell and Myrna Loy at their best!

      • NBG

“Which they shouldn’t, which means they probably will.”

Probably. And they’ll probably cast someone like Lindsay Lohan.

        • DB Ruberto

Bite your tongue! (Shivers…Lohan and Loy in the same thought/space/time)

          • bitchybitchybitchy

OK, I’ll be making a garlic necklace and searching for a cross to ward off this.

        • MilaXX

I doubt she ever gets cast in anything more than those scary movie spoofs or Sharknado IV: Rise of the minnows.

        • formerlyAnon

Jesus. Just because you’re probably right is no reason to say it out loud. Or type it. Whatever.

        • Nancer

Oh no – the horror! The horror!!!

        • demidaemon

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Actually Maggie Gyllenhaal and her significant other, Peter Saarsgard could both work in The Thin Man. He cleans up very nicely and can do suave.

        • Suzanne Johnson

That pairing had occurred to me also.

    • MilaXX

Who would be the Nick to her Nora? Hiddles maybe?

      • Shawn EH

        Paul Bettany.

      • Alicia

Hiddles is adorable but a little young for it, I’d say.

    • NurseEllen

Good pickup! And maybe Colin Farrell as Nick Charles?

    • editrixie

Actually, I read recently about plans to do exactly that. And of course, I screamed when one of the articles I saw mentioned…Johnny Depp. I’m sorry. Really I am. But I haven’t heard more about it, so it’s entirely possible that it’s been shelved. Pray with me.

      • marlie

NO. At this point, he ruins everything he touches.

      • ryenerman

AGH NO! Johnny Depp. Stay the hell away from The Thin Man. Ruin those movies and I will throw all the things.

        • editrixie

There is, like, no possible way on earth that I could despise Depp any more than I do. I just hate him. SO SO MUCH. Seriously, when my friend posted the link to the article, I actually screamed like a horror-movie victim.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I do remain fond of Depp (for past work), but a resounding no to him going anywhere near The Thin Man. Can you imagine him wearing that dreadful hat with a tux? I’m retching inwardly at the mere thought.

      • demidaemon

        *sobs relentlessly*

    • Suzanne Johnson

That is an excellent idea, actually. Yes, Maggie should play Nora Charles. Who should play Nick? Cumberbatch?

    • demidaemon

I adore those movies. great mysteries with lots of wit and alcohol. In other words, BK crack.

  • Valdri8

I often wonder what these stars who make such horrid choices for themselves think when they see photos of them looking fabulous. It reminds me of my ex-husband, who could recognize that the house was actually clean and preferred it to be that way, but had no real desire to obtain the skill set to make it happen on his own.

Secretary is one of my favorite movies of all time – I think it is such a unique and truly beautiful love story. It pisses me off that I cannot stream it.

    • MilaXX

I love how all the Americans are like “I can drink AND curse? YAY!”

      • Alicia

The Spiderman kids & Jamie Foxx were on the other week, and Graham said something like “Emma, didn’t they get your drink order?”, and her response to the guys was “I asked for water – you guys got wine? You can drink on a TALK SHOW?” really cute.

  • Tricia

She is so beautiful. Love her!

  • Watterson

Those QUOTES look like STAN LEE transcribed her interview for a SUPER-ACTION FILLED edition of Edit Magazine, the COMIC. BAM. POW. LEARNING about myself as a WOMAN and an ACTRESS as I AGE. EXCELSIOR.

    • Tom and Lorenzo

      This made me LOL.

    • formerlyAnon

      You win.

    • Leah Elzinga

written in Comic Sans… *DUCKS and RUNS for cover* my eyelids were twitching through the whole bit.

    • decormaven

      Bowing down….

  • alyce1213

Stunning. Maggie should take Karina Givargisoff with her everywhere, at all times.

  • Kate Andrews

Ooh, the DKNY dress and the pose! Gorgeous.

  • NBG

    Lanvin coat. Swoon!

  • frannyprof

The DKNY shot is the winner. Gorgeous.

    • Jacob Bowen

That over the back is FANTASTIC.

  • Uncle Spike

I’ve always wondered what stylists could do with someone like Maggie, since she’s stumbled so much. First thought after seeing the third picture: Of course! Flapper girl! Give her a Marcel wave and a lip like that, and she’s unstoppable! Second thought: Duh. That’s too obvious. Third thought: Well, if it is, then why hasn’t it been deployed yet?Seriously, I think she needs to look to the ’20s for inspiration. Or maybe just dieselpunk across the board.

  • Ashley Vice

Is this all very “West Side Story” or is it just me?

    • Imasewsure

They gave her Rita Moreno’s hair cut for sure in some of these pix

  • Alloy Jane

I’m really glad someone herded her away from the “Homeless Grandma” looks she generally likes to sport. Digging everything but that bandeau top.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love these! I’m a bit in love with Maggie – it’s so lovely to see her looking so chic and less like my nan’s sofa.

  • MartyBellerMask

Not understanding the RANDOM all caps in THE quotes. Was the EDITOR high or JUST really bored???

  • Wink

    Best she has ever looked!

  • International Model

She would have made a killer Lois Lane.

  • ReadBarbara

  • Yolanda

Pictures 1, 3 and 4 – gorgeous! She looks lovely! So agree about the deflated boobs.

  • Ginmaru

LOVE the picture of her in the Lanvin coat!

  • Imasewsure

Deflated boobs is, alas, one of the downsides of getting older…. love all the other shots!

  • MilaXX

Agreed. Like the 1st look, hate the 2nd. LOVE the 3rd & 4th looks.

  • ktr33

The top pic is _perfection_ but also fresh, with a hint of past glamour. And in the Lanvin coat — like a postmodern noir heroine. Delish!

  • NurseEllen

That DKNY look, and photo, are both fab. She is really selling it! The interview quotes seem like so much run-of-the-mill Hollywood BS, but I am INTRIGUED but the occasional WORDS in CAPITALS. Is that how it was printed in the magazine? How weird.

  • FibonacciSequins

I’m not loving the deflated boob look, either. It looks particularly bad in the second pic, where her ribcage is sticking out more than her bustline. I love a straight skirt to the mid-calf, and envy Maggie for her ability to pull it off.

  • Cathy S

    The coat! Give me!

Oh, yeah, she looks really good.

  • formerlyAnon

The two pictures you call out are the two that disappointed me. That over the shoulder shot of her in DKNY is possibly the most seductive I’ve ever seen her.

  • jw_ny

She’ll revert back to her earthy granola style That’s her. This is not (although it should, at least sometimes, be.)

  • MishaFoomin

or in the style of The Edit magazine…

But she’s had SOMETHING of a style BREAKTHROUGH in recent weeks, so
we’re inclined to go EASY on her this time. We know she’ll DISAPPOINT us
AGAIN on the red carpet. They always do, DARLINGS. But FOR now, she
seems TO have found her look.

  • MichelleRafter

She looks fantastic, love the soft yellow of the DKNY with the darker red lips and hoops. Atta girl.

  • jonnyf8

I did not think this was possible. Bravo!

  • suzq

  • Qitkat

Watch the video in the online piece on Net-a-Porter to which the link goes; there you will see this woman, who is an unconventional beauty, moving with the grace and sensuality born of confidence that she is indeed the most beautiful woman anywhere. Such a subtle and powerful call to Be Me.
    Luv huh!

  • BellaLuv

I love the DKNY dress and want those earrings!!

  • marlie

Some individual elements might not be perfect, but overall, she looks OUTSTANDING. Attagirl, Maggie!

  • Kathleen

If she hasn’t already bought that Lanvin coat she needs to – immediately!

  • Shawn EH

She’s channeling 1950s bossa nova singer to me … which is a good thing. She looks like she’s near a beach in Cuba.

  • LeelaST

LOVE that over-the-shoulder shot. That’s some modern Clara Bow “It Girl”!

  • kimmeister

I don’t think I realized how very, very svelte she is, since she has defaulted to wearing burlap sacks so often.

  • nannypoo

I hate her regular frumpy clothes but when other people dress her she can look incredibly sexy.

  • kmk05

She looks sophisticated, which is a first for her. Definitely her look from top to bottom.

  • Miss wks

Nope. She needs a new stylist. She needs a retro photoshoot in a 1962 Dodge stationwagon. She drivin’ cross the hot desert with a car full of screamin’ kids gettin’ away from Husband #3. She’s in the front seat, hair wrapped in a bandana, halter top tied at her neck, Bermuda shorts, cigarette dangling out the corner of her bright red lips. Her body slightly torqued- one hand on the wheel the other at the end of the arm wildly flailing at squirming kids in the backseat trying to steer clear of the sting of her slap. Prada bag on the front seat packs of cigs spilling out with her bottles of Mothers-little-helpers. Sun unrelenting. Bright blue sky. Blacktop.

  • E.Nelson

I think, though the Jil Sander is wrong on her, Jil Sander could be a great designer for her to try out more. She does best with the fauxrties thing and also (in the vein of LeeLee Sobieski) with very simple, stark clean lines. Dior’s classic stuff, Calvin Klein, etc.

That being said, she needs to ditch the Florence Welch drag and hand these photos to a trembling stylist/assistant and whisper “It’s about time JAKE becomes The Other Gyllenhaal,” with murder in her voice.

  • t bell

The Lanvin coat and her are made for each other.

  • AvaLehra

I will always have a soft spot for Maggie because of Stranger than Fiction.

  • altalinda

Why is she (or MORE LIKELY the editor) CAPITALIZING?

  • FridaStaire

    1st, 3rd and 4th gorgeous!

  • quiltrx

    Dat coat!
What is up with all the capitalization? Does she put that much EMPHASIS on so many of her WORDS? 😉

  • sk8tfan

The shot of her in the DKNY dress where she’s peeking over her shoulder may be a new personal best for her. And she should have that hair dresser travel with her as part of her entourage, I don’t remember her hair ever looking so good.

  • demidaemon

That first look is pretty amazing. What’s with all the weird caps in the quotes? Was she randomly yelling/emphasizing certain words when she was being interviewed?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I am loving that Lanvin coat/coat dress, and love the first photo and the Donna Karan. Not as fond of either the Jil Sander or Gurung tops. Overall, though, Maggie is really looking good in this editorial. Such a pleasure to see her like this.

  • DeTrop

Wow! She looks beautiful. We knew she would if she tried.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

The shot in the DKNY dress is aboslutely gorgeous! Very thirties glamour shot.

  • Clash D

I love the idea of taking a random chair and sitting outside somebody’s fence on a public sidewalk and take photos. This is what’s going on in the first photo but as a fashion image it’s visually beautiful.

  • alliekat9090

    this is gorgeous stuff here.

  • altissima

I agree about the Prabal Gurung and Jill Sanders tops, but she looks fab in the rest of the shots. The DNKY is giving me LIFE!
