Lupita Nyong’o in NYC

Posted on April 18, 2014

Even when she’s street-casual and probably not even trying that hard, Miss Lupita blows everyone else out of the water. PRESENCE, bitches. She has it.

Cute coat. Love the pop of yellow in the scarf and the comfy-chic boots.

Oh, and Reese? Stop wearing hats. You’ve been bested on the sidewalk-runway. Maybe that’s not fair. Lupita’s just naturally more chic in a pair of jeans and little effort than most people who spend hours getting ready. She’s just go IT; that magic combo of poise and taste that makes people fall all over her. Excitable people. Like us.

Sidewalk werq! Gimme, gimmie, gimmie, that coat!!

    • I want that coat too! It would look terrific over one of my kilts. (grin)

      • Lucía Gavello

Oh absolutely! It has the right amount of flare!

    • Stella Zawistowski

It’s such a pretty coat that I’ll even forgive the weather gods for making it appropriate for her to wear it in LATE APRIL.

      • makeityourself

I think it’s the same coat she wore on a previous TLo post, only over a black dress. Versatile garment, that coat.

    • Karen Belgrad

She’s SITFU… “Sidewalking It The Fuck Up!”
(thanks to TLO , I am adding ‘it the fuck up’ to all locales)

    • JP

My first thought: Coat. MUST HAVE.

    • I want the coat, scarf AND boots. So I’m greedy. *shrugs*

    • somebody blonde

Yeah, I’d want that coat, but I’m not Lupita-shaped so I don’t think it would work for me. But it’s definitely beautiful.

      • I am NOT Lupita shaped and have had a coat a similar style which was very flattering. I’ve been looking for a replacement for several years now!

  • Glam Dixie

I’m not getting fabulous, she looks cute, but that’s all I’m getting from this. Cute. I agree that she has IT though. She has IT in spades.

    • Nicholas

      Ditto. Girl’s taking a stroll, ’s’all.

      • Glam Dixie

I believe the IT that Miss Lupita carries around with her tends to cause massive over-reactions to her presence and her attire.

        • wisenhar

BLASPHEMY! I kid. What really does it for me with this look is the scarf. She can really werq saturated colors.

          • Glam Dixie

That made me laugh so thanks. Yeah, saturated colors are her friend.

        • I believe you either see it or you don’t.

          • Glam Dixie

Certainly. As is the case with everything else subjective.

        • Nathan

I also just see cute, but I think Lupita cute is miles away from normal people cute.

    • kimmeister

I’m such a dork that I can’t see “IT” without mentally pronouncing it like the acronym for Information Technology.

  • EEKstl

Worshiping the coat, scarf and HER. Sidewalk perfection!

    • Trent

Amazing, isn’t it? This is as casual as NYC celeb looks go (jeans and shearling boots, y’all) and yet she just grabs your eye immediately. Good to see that her flawless skin isn’t just the product of red carpet/magazine makeup people — she’s just naturally gorgeous.

  • SweetJess MeanGreen

Everytime I see her I wonder if she will be an actress or movie star. She has potential for the latter and I actually like to see that. She’s really going to need a strong team, decent work, and luck for movie star longevity though.

    She looks nice as always.

    • I reckon she’s going to end up behind the camera. She’s a clever woman, she’s got stories of her own she’ll want to tell.

      • marlie

I kind of think that too. I think she’ll still act, but she’ll wait for the roles that are just right for her.

        • I see her as having a sort of Julie Delpy career.

    • Trent

@SweetJess, I wonder that too. You only have to look at Halle Berry’s career after winning the Oscar to see how things could go wrong (especially for actresses of color). And what have Octavia Spencer and Mo’Nique done lately? Sigh.

      • SweetJess MeanGreen

Octavia did well in Fruitvale Station but that movie fell under the radar. Monique, oh dear, I think I saw her hosting a reality show reunion. It’s extremely hard for conventionally attractive black women to find roles let alone a striking one like Lupita. I wish her luck for roles.

  • M_E_S

Bow the fuck down. Queen Lupita has arrived.

  • KinoEye

Serving rockstar chic on a silver platter. That woman’s face in the last picture says it all. Lupita’s like the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones. If you look directly at her, you die of fabulousness.

  • Danielle

Excuse me, Oscar winning coming through!

  • MilaXX

YAS! Lupita just beat Reese at her own parking lot tour game. I want those boots. Anybody know where they are from?

    • R.A.

I want those boots SO. BAD. Now what are the chances that they didn’t cost as much as a used car? I’m only holding out a tiny bit of hope because it’s Lupita.

      • They are the Ugg Zea boots in grey/black – not too bad price wise, everywhere I have seen them they are $175

        • R.A.

Ooo thanks for the tip! Just checked it out. They are $235 up here in the Great White North. Was strongly considering but they are suede and as a cow-lover I always feel bad about that. I guess the price point AND a synthetic material was too much to hope for! Oh and I just noticed the foldover is sheepskin… going to have to take a pass this time.

    • Violentcello

Those are the exact boots I’ve been looking for all winter.

      • They are the Ugg Zea boots in grey/black – not too bad price wise, everywhere I have seen them they are $175

        • Violentcello

All the high fives in the world to you, my dear! Thank you!

    • Thus far not having a huge amount of luck in my google searches for these.

However I will say bejeebus there are a lot of awesome boots out there in the world. 🙂

    • AHA Win!

They are the Ugg Zea in Grey. I will post a link but it will go to moderation, so you can google that in the meantime.

      • MilaXX

woo hoo! That means they are affordable, comfortable AND warm. ($175). Think I’ll order me a pair for next winter.

        • I have a sneaking suspicion Oprah put her onto Ugg, after all they were on her favourite things lists a lot.

They do look extremely comfortable and we are about to have winter here so these might be on my buy soonest list. 🙂

      • MilaXX

        good soothing skills! Thanks girl.

  • Jessica Freeman

Really love that scarf. She looks great.

  • cocohall

Excitable people AND the lovely woman in the background (they are both lovely, but the taller one seems especially to be basking in Miss Lupita’s glow.) Lupita is both chic and believable, in that she looks snug as a bug in her coat and scarf and not dressed to impress the paps. And she is rocking what is not such an easy silhouette to pull off in that coat. Some people (ahem, that would be me) would find the volume around the hips to be less than flattering, but she is making it sing.

  • Tanya Wade

I just had a scarfgasm. And a hatgasm.

  • Drunken Housewife

She’d look good in the nastiest of mallwear with her thin frame and beautiful face. But this coat, scarf, and hat are amazing. I hope Hollywood gives her some good roles, but she could also have a career somewhere in fashion.

  • ScarlettHarlot

I adore this! Where in the world is Lupita Sandiego?!

  • Anna

Can I be a roadie on your sidewalk tour, pretty please Lupita? I’ll carry your purse, throw MY coat over a puddle so your feet don’t get wet, get you Starbucks…whatever you want.

  • Daisy Walker

    Luv. huh.

  • sagecreek

And actually dressed appropriately for the weather! I love this gal.

  • VioletFem

Love that coat! That woman beside her is MESMERIZED by Lupita’s beauty. I would have the same expression if I was (ever so blessed) to meet her.

  • Ahhhhh I’ve been DYING to see her street casual look! Especially pants, and everything else in this photo. LOVE. She looks like such a mysterious badass.

  • RutGot

It’s nice to see someone in weather appropriate gear. It’s still a bit chilly in NYC.

  • ms_kat

That silhouette is perfect for her. She looks great in dresses that are sort of New Look-y and she looks FANTASTIC in this coat.

  • butterflysunita

Love it. Weather appropriate, comfortable, and yet still so stylish.

  • Maryanne525

Okay, I know it’s played out, but I genuinely said “yasssss” when I saw the pictures. She looks absolutely divine.

  • ChaCha_70

Werq that coat girl! Love it and love her!

  • Watterson

She’s luminous. Literally, she gives off light. And I covet that scarf.

  • Ginger

I know I’m in the minority, but I am SO ready for the bulky scarf trend to die. There are appropriate times and places for scarves to be worn (like here, for instance), but I just don’t get wearing scarves in the summer or wrapped around (and fluffed up around) your neck several times over when you’re inside. It just looks stupid and you’re adding bulk to your frame…which, if you’re anything like me, adding bulk to one’s frame is usually not desired.

With my little rant being over, I covet that coat, hat and sunglasses. I’ll give her the scarf because it’s a brilliant shade of yellow and it’s actually cold outside (or so I’ve heard).

  • Noah

    My kingdom for that scarf.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

She is beyond fabbu and I like everything about this apart from the hat….and I really hate that hat on her

  • JulieTy

75% of my love for this Lupita moment is that she is dressed appropriately for the weather!!!

  • d4divine

    Snaps! Claps!

  • SugarSnap108

I think it’s the smile under the hat that really makes the difference.

    • somebody blonde

Yeah, she totally looks pleased with herself, and yet that’s somehow adorable rather than smug.

  • decormaven

Girl, you’ve got me walking on sunshine with that glorious scarf. Happy sigh!

  • Amanda Miller

I love the woman in the background. She’s just awestruck.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Oh and Reese? Stop walking around parking lots pretending you have something to do and somewhere to be. It’s getting old.

  • deech_sea

    Poise and taste

  • homofascist

I love the fact that is her incognito “no one notice me, I’m trying to be discrete” look, but oh yeah I’m gonna wrap a gigantic yellow scarf around my neck, just so y’all still notice. Well played.

  • Funkykatt

My friend says the only woman he would turn for is Stevie Nicks. Lupita must be your Stevie.

    • Which Stevie, though? I’d become a sister of the moon for permed ballerina, Tusk-era Stevie.

      • Funkykatt

Any Stevie. He loves her now too even as the older Stevie and that’s how one measures true love.

  • FancyPhilly

Love the look. Hate that it is April and she is appropriately dressed for the weather.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Fabulous. Love those boots!

  • yethica

The PERFECT FREAKING SKIN doesn’t hurt either. Amazing.

  • Stunning coat, stunning woman.

  • Yolanda13

Street chic! Queen Lupita, your subjects bow down.

    • malarson2

I was in a tavern last month with my niece when some Oscar coverage came on the tv hanging over our table. Mind you, this is my blond, semi-snarky, 13-year-old, 5’10” niece, wearing her skinny jeans with the home-applied cuts all over them, 12 inches of black rubber bracelets up her left arm and an ironic way-too-cute kitty sweater on top, who paused when she saw Ms. Lupita come on the screen, long enough to yell for all the tavern people to hear, “My QUEEEEEN!” This really says it all about Lupita to me.

      • Yolanda13

        Love it!

  • MarissaLG

Attn Tay Tay:THIS is how you dress stylishly for NYC spring weather.

  • marlie

Attagirl! And weather-appropriate for her sidewalk-runway as well.

  • Put a hat on her and the bk’s go crazy? It’s official – Lupita is Malibu Stacy. (Side note: would totally buy a Lupita doll.)

    • somebody blonde

Now I really want a Lupita doll. It’ll look nice with the RuPaul doll I’m saving up for. They can go to the makeup counters together.

It occurs to me that while the fashion houses should want to give Lupita a contract, it’s really makeup people who should be scrambling for it. Girl’s face is always perfectly painted.

      • VioletFem

Well, things seem to be shaping it out pretty well for her because she is the new face of Lancome.

        • Saw this right after I posted. It’s a good match (though I still hold out hope for Fashion Fair).

      • Agreed. She can rock a fresh face to bold color – Lancome would be the mid-scale consumer friendly, a YSL or Chanel would also be a good fit. Not to make her a “you represent all woman of color now!”, I would be thrilled if she did Fashion Fair, though. I used to be a make up girl at a department store right next to Fashion Fair and it was always an odd walk of shame to see women slink over from Christian Dior, Estee Lauder, Benefit, etc. It’s not a name that has ever exuded the same sort of glamour and fun. So many Oscar winning/nominated actresses represent perfumes of top make up brands (Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Kiera Knightly) – for those women of color, I want to see them walk over to Fashion Fair with pride and have the white girls envy them for a change.

  • nannypoo

It never occurred to me that she would wear jeans. Of course she does it with style and poise.

  • conniemd

Gray and gold are’t colors I would think of to match, but that gold scarf is glorious with that coat.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Oh, that coat-love, love, coveting it. And yes, Lupita simply has IT, in spades.

  • suburbanbohemian

    The hat!

  • GillianHolroyd

oh how I wish the coat and hat were a brighter color; this just looks drab. Maybe it’s the flash. Maybe it’s the fact we had snow in April and I’m projecting.

  • butterflysunita

    Interesting article.

  • kimmeister

It’s a great coat, but it doesn’t look right to me with jeans and booties. That coat goes over a dress or skirt (and not a pencil one, at that).

  • BrooklynBomber

    Sigh. . .

  • MilaXX

Uggs also does free shipping so if you can’t find them in store order online.

  • e jerry powell

And serving for the paparazzi, dammit.

  • Sophie

Love the coat and hat. Could anyone tell me what fabric the scarf is made from?

  • pookiesmom

Can’t believe I’m lusting after UGG boots. Such is the power of Lupita.

  • Gloriana Reginata

Love the hat and the yellow, but the jeans just look too heavy under that flowing coat. For once, there is a role for Zoe Deschanel’s black tights to play.

  • Beth

Love most everything except the jeans, with that marvelous coat. Funny proportions.

  • I love everything that happens above the knee, but those jeans and boots with this chic coat are pathetic.

  • kt

Don’t see it at all. She is a pretty girl and that yellow looks gorgeous next to her skin, but everything else can go.

  • lillyvonschtupp

    Awesome, as usual.

  • that coat, i am swooning…

  • Imasewsure

We can only hope that Reese sees this and understands…

  • irielle

In regards to the comment regarding Reese wearing hats, I’ve been wondering if she’s been wearing hats for more practical reasons. My mom’s battling melanoma, and now she’s very serious about wearing hats. It’s actually a good idea, even if sadly you can’t carry them off like a certain Ms. Lupita.
