WERQ: Lupita Nyong’o in Giambattista Valli at Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces Party

Posted on April 09, 2014

We overdosed on 3 hours of RuPaul’s Drag Race in our hotel room late last night after our L.A. signing, so forgive us for lapsing into cliche but…

Lupita Nyong’o attends the Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces Party at Soho House in West Hollywood, California in a Giambattista Valli couture dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps and Graziela Gems floral jewelry.

Giambattista Valli Fall 2014 Couture Collection

In all seriousness, she’s breathtaking. The dress is stunning on her – and this is the one time her preference for matchy bridesmaid shoes actually works for her. And as always, her hair looks fabulous.

White boy question: Is that her hair or is that some sort of piece? We’re seriously asking. That’s a lot of volume springing up suddenly.

In other, highly tragic news, we’re pretty sure we missed an opportunity to attend this event because of our signing going on at the same time. There was a last minute invite from a fashion editor friend that we had to decline, but we didn’t find out until this morning who was in attendance. We suspect they could hear our wails of anguish all the way back home on the east coast. We know we always say we don’t want to party with celebs or befriend them because we need to maintain some distance in order to do this job, but COME ON. Frikkin LUPITA.

Please excuse us while we take a moment to weep softly.

But y’know? Even with that missed opportunity taunting us and haunting us, we wouldn’t have missed the opportunity to meet our L.A. Bitter Kittens for anything – not even a chance to bow down to the most fabulous Oscar winner in ages.

(Trying to get to the RPDR recap when we can, Kittens. Be patient. Three cities and four flights in 5 days. It’s a little rough at the moment.)

    I have missed her so!

    • ME TOO! 🙂 What a delight for the eyes she is. 🙂

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

I think that might be a hair piece and I don’t care. I have been suffering from Lupita withdrawal with her not being on the TLo site daily. Miss Thing just shut the whole runway down. if she walked on Drag Race the other Queens would just ceed the runway to her cause you couldnt sissy up a walk enough to even come close to this level of perfection.

    • zenobar

I’m not even sure she walks. I think she may actually gently levitate an inch or so off the ground.

    • Lea Setegn

It is not unusual for African-American women who are NOT celebs to deploy hairpieces and wigs for their everyday looks – so if Lupita is wearing one, more power to her!

  • gayle

Lovely, just simply lovely in every way!

  • Danielle

Excuse me while I pick my jaw off the floor. She will never stop stunning me.

  • @Biting Panda

    She lights up my life.

  • Samantha Klein

Does Lupita have the most “WERQs” ever, or at least the most within the smallest period of time? I’ve been wondering this since about midway through Award Season. 🙂

    • Nicholas

Kid Shipka is still the reigning champion, I believe.

      • Aurora Leigh

I snorted at Kid Shipka. Love it.

      • Sam Erin

‘Kid Shipka’…love. Needs to be a thing, for sure.

    • R.A.

Love the idea of an ongoing top ten “WERQ” recipients roster!! And maybe we should also start maintaing a list of those who’ve received the most “Oh, honey. No.”‘s.

      • Judih1

        ME TOO!

      • Adelaidey

Surely Maggie Gyl is the latter.

        • ankali

Ehhhh, I think Christina Hendricks might have something to say about that.

      • ecallaw1977

I agree, I would love a stats board or at least regularly updated Top 10 list for all of their regular categories!

        • R.A.

It would also provide a more “scientific” approach to creating our Uncles’ year-end best and worst dressed lists :).

          • demidaemon

Scientific approaches are awesome, as long as statistical analysis is not involved. True story: I looked at a statistical analysis of how likely a contestant is going to survive to the final three. My eyes and brain had a thrice around explosion of brain juice.

      • Sam Erin

ME TOO!!! Uncle TLo, pretty please!?

  • It’s okay, Boys. It’s a piece aka hair extensions.

Meanwhile, Lupita looks amazing. The matchy shoes definitely completes the outfit. (Mind you, I’ve never been against matchy shoes).

    • zenobar

Sometimes, a lady needs to match.

      • kimmeister

I have that need pretty much 90% of the time.

        • Sam Erin

I’m loving this comment thread. Totally love a little matchy action.

    • paginatrix

Had no idea they made extensions for short hair. Hate the cheesy long-hair ones. This one looks sharp (though I would expect nothing less from her).

      • kimmeister

If there are clip-on bangs, why not clip-on poofs! 😀

        • giddypony

Aren’t those called a “fall” or a “switch”?

  • I’ve missed see her on the carpet! She looks great and excuse me miss with the piece she worked that one well!

  • M_E_S

She needs to have another (excellent) movie ASAP so we can continue to bask in her fashion glory. Simply stunning, as usual.

    • AnaRoW

Movie, television, stage, anything. I checked her IMDB profile. She’s in one movie coming up with Liam Neeson and it doesn’t look like a very large role. I’d like to think it’s just that she’s been flooded with offers and hasn’t accepted anything yet but a part of me fears she’s going to primarily get offered slave roles, which is what happened to Djimon Hounsou for years.

  • MsKitty

It’s definitely an extension (an ever-so-slight texture difference is detectable in the close up), but the look is great. I’m outta superlatives for The Goddess at this point, so I’m in a state of silent admiration.

  • Scimommy

Don’t care whether it’s a hair piece – she looks amazeballs. Although I don’t love the shoes. I think something in black-blue would have worked better.

And I am weeping softly with you, but my despair is tempered slightly by the confidence that surely this opportunity will come again, and that this time you WILL meet Miss Lupita to bask in the glory of her presence and tell her that your bitter kittens love her.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

And when you do I hope she tells you that she loves your blog and your book. 🙂

  • zenobar

I realize this may sound odd, but there’s something so damn right about the way the shape of this dress enhances the shape of her already-unbelievable arms.

    • But also, her fantastic butt makes the dress sit really well!

    • Yes! The earrings! They are perfect.

  • Cathy S

I love her little hair puff. That’s adorable.

  • MilaXX

Yes the high hair is a piece. I love this look on her, and the shoes work because they are not an exact match for a change.

    • kimmeister

What I like about the shoes is the cut on the vamp is rounded instead of the unflattering straight-across that she has favored in the past.

  • Tanya Wade

There she goes with the Degas Ballerina Realness again! I want to marry this dress I love it so much.

  • VioletFem

Black girl with natural hair here. It’s her hair cause she bought it! No but seriously, that is most likely a weave styled to look like her highly textured hair. I just love how the versatility in hairstyles that she has been showcasing (with or without weaves). She looks beautiful here as always.

    • Golfkat

THANK YOU!! I tried asking the same question on RCFA’s post about her, but my comment wasn’t approved! 🙁 I was wondering if you can explain how she changed her hairstyle during awards season? Because while I kind of figured it would be a weave kind of situation here, I don’t understand how she could have so varying short hairdos? Like with the different shapes and the shavings (I don’t know what else to call it) at times! This has honestly been a mystery to me throughout awards season, since I’m not very familiar with hair like hers 🙂

Other than that I’m just really glad to see her radiant face again 😀 I like this look on her. The dress is a lot flirtier and less sleek-serious-fashion than what we saw from her during awards season. It’s really lovely 🙂

      • VioletFem

For at least some of her hairstyles, her stylist probably “stretching” her hair. A common way to stretch or lengthen tightly coiled hair is to use a method call heat tension or tension blowdrying in which one uses a brush and a blow dryer to straighten the hair (which makes it appear longer) or a hot comb. For the many different hairstyles that we’ve seen her sport (especially the styles where her hair looks longer), her stylist probably used the tension method, added a weave or a combination of both. As far as making her hair look like it was shaved on the sides, I actually thought that she did shave it (I could be wrong). However, in this photo, the hair on the sides of her hair looks like it was brushed back with the aid of some pomade or gel.

Personally, I’ve never had natural hair that was that short (I transitioned into natural hair while my hair was still long-ish). My hair is at least 6-8 inches in length, so the way I style my hair is different than her. I also transitioned instead of cutting as short as Lupita’s because when I first decided to style my natural hair, I mistakenly believed that short hair like Lupita’s was not very versatile and wouldn’t provide enough styling options. I am so glad to see Lupita proving me wrong on this commonly held belief.

      • Agatha Guilluame

Critics Choice Awards (white dress with cut-outs) – She had a widows peak. They achieved that with a dye. I’ve never seen a black woman do that before, I have however seen black men with beards do that. Their barber applies a dye that stains the skin so their beards looks full and perfect.

SAG Awards (blue column dress with bejeweled neck) – very likely a piece. I’m not sure how one adds a high top fade piece but the volume and height alone convinces me that it has to be a piece.

Golden Globes (red dress with cape) – It’s all her hair. They very likely used a hot comb to get her hair that straight. A blow dryer and a very small flat iron may be able to achieve the same thing on her texture but it wouldn’t have lasted through the night like it did.

Her hair in its natural state is hair curled very tightly on itself. And to make it look even denser her stylist probably pats it downs (literally). Other times when you see volume but not the extra volume from the SAG awards (just a little more volume that when it’s close cropped) then her hair was probably “picked out” with a wide tooth comb expressly for that purpose. On that texture her “the part” can be achieved 2 ways, either shaved in or a very precise parting of the hair with a “tail comb”. I assume it was done with the lather since her “part” was never permanent.

        • VioletFem

I agree that for a lot of her hairstyles, her hair was probably picked out. There were a few instances where I think her hair was stretched, like her Oscar hairdo for example. The ends of the hair look a lot straighter than they do in this picture.

          • Agatha Guilluame

In my opinion her Oscar hair is a piece. The texture behind the hair band is like a shag rug and the height of it would mean her hair had grown 3 inches in a fortnight…the texture in front of the hair band is her hair. In my opinion no amount of stretching in the world would give her that texture. If that is her hair then they achieved that texture with a chemical or a hot comb and gel which isn’t the same as simply stretching the hair.

Can you direct me to something maybe on YouTube or Google where a person gets that texture from stretching?

          • VioletFem

There is a NYmag interview with Larry Sims, her hairstlylist for the Oscars, where he describes how he styled her hair. He does not mention a hair piece, but those explain that you can achieve the effect with a diffuser and a comb.

          • Golfkat

I can’t reply to your other post yet, apparently it hasn’t been approved or something, so I’m just going to say THANK YOU here 😀 You have no idea how much I appreciate it. Having little to knowledge to natural hair I’ve felt VERY out of the loop 😛 Thank you thank you!

          • Agatha Guilluame

This was his replies to the questions:

Did you have to shave her hair? It looks shorter on the sides.

I shaved the sides and back of her hair all the way around. To add volume, I used a combination of Go Pro Curls products on her damp hair and blew it out with a diffuser. [The products] help elongate and define the curl. I can get a lot of fullness out of her hair texture.

Is that all her real hair behind the headband?

What’s so amazing about her hair and the different styles is that people don’t know how I’m able to pull it off, so I don’t want to give too much away.

I can’t post the link but a quick Google of Larry Sims and NYMAG brings it up

Notice he wouldn’t admit to whether or not that was all her hair. His caginess makes me believe it isn’t. Maybe her hair that is left out (the hair in front go the headband) was stretched.

          • VioletFem

Yeah, I noticed that too. I figured he probably used a combination of stretching and hair pieces for some of her hairstyles. Her Golden Globe look was also similarly styled with a blowdryer, a comb and some hair product, but without a weave.

          • Stella Zawistowski

This straight-haired half-Asian is LOVING the hair education in this thread. You are Winner Bitter Kittens in my book.

        • Golfkat

THANK YOU SO MUCH! 😀 You have no idea how stupid I’ve felt. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this! 🙂

        • Heather

I would like to say thank you for these wonderful explanations. I love natural hair and am always appreciative when someone breaks down techniques for those of us that don’t have it.

        • decormaven

Her hair stylist is one smart cookie- offers some details, but uses some very proprietary techniques to achieve her looks. I’ve loved every one of them. She’s a true beauty.

        • demidaemon

          Great analysis and very informative!

    • DTLAFamilies

My friends and I used to say, “Sure it’s her hair, she has the receipt and everything!”

  • marlie

She looks AH-MAZING! The dress is lovely, and I LOOOOOVE her hair (and yes, it’s a piece). Bummer that you didn’t get a chance to schmooze with her, but maybe your paths will cross again some day.

  • SewingSiren

Super cute. She’s wearing a little switch/wiglet which is rather adorable with this outfit.

    • caroline

Wiglet is the most adorable word I’ve heard this week. Giggling at my desk and hoping to find somewhere to use it in real life.

  • Beautiful. That dress was made for her! I’d have gone for a blue suede peeptoe, myself.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

The dress! The woman! That jewelry! I need my smelling salts.

    • KinoEye

She always sends me into a conniption fit, too. Wish I had a fan like Aunt Pittypat’s in case of Lupita WERQs.

    • caroline

Not the point, but did you know you can order smelling salts cheap on Amazon? I’ve considered it just for comedic value to carry in my purse.

  • Courtenay P

praise god. I needed this today. thx Lupita!

  • Anna

Shot like an arrow through my heart, that’s the pain that I feel whenever we’re apart.

    I’ve missed you much, Lupita.

  • flamingoNW

  • decormaven

Pure poetry in motion. Hallelujah! And dear uncles, please pace yourself. Have a mimosa on the balcony; and if your room doesn’t have one, dammit, get an upgrade. You’re due after being [thisclose] to going to an event with Lupita. Console yourself with sunshine- both in real and liquid form.

    • KinoEye

      She blinded me with FASHION.

  • Kitten Mittons

She is just unreal. Her poise is as stunning as her outfit. And her arms are giving me fits of jealousy.

  • deelup

Walking spring time and I love it!

  • mjude

I need to take a moment to BOW DOWN

  • Tricia Rose

I love it! She puts the model to shame, making the dress her own… why do the rest of us even try!?!? *because, when I try, and if I can, get a speck of her awesomeness then I have won in life!*

  • Sarah

She’s FRESH! Exciting! She’s so inviting to me…

  • heartbot

Whether she grew it or paid for it, it’s hers.

  • Richard Harper

  • Kayceed

Amazing how on point a spring ensemble looks in April.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Be still, my heart.

  • Excuse me ehile I pick myself off the ground. WERQ mama!

  • PlethoraofBooks

Can I steal her makeup queens? Or just one of them? Because they do a bang up job EVERY time.

  • Yolanda13

Uncles, I think that’s a hair piece and I don’t care because she is working it with a fierceness! She is absolutely stunning. Just stunning.

  • KinoEye

Happy sigh. This is the right way to start the morning. So shines a glowing beacon of fierceness in a weary world.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Someone please pull that loose thread….

  • Kathy

She has the sweetest smile, and personality to go with it. Add to that her amazing talent, and I’m so wishing her career takes off monumentally now that she’s got an Oscar.

Oh, and everything here looks perfect!

  • Gatto Nero

Lovely, pretty, fresh. Spring. I’m glad she went for a slightly metallic shoe instead of white.
I’m pretty sure that’s a hairpiece, uncles. In the closeup in photo 4, there appears to be a blurred borderline.

  • Martha Anderson

Her most beautiful accessory is her inner light

have not felt that since Audrey Hepburn

    • deech_sea

She has similar old-world breeding and poise to Audrey Hepburn.

    • Sunraya

I see that in her, too. She does have an inner light, like she is a very advanced soul. She seems to act that way, too. Very self-composed and self-confident without any cockiness. I think she is wonderful!!

  • toriadoria

Yeah, I can’t sign off on this one. Too much shimmer on her face and arms. Awful shoes (as usual). She’s perfection herself but this ain’t a WERQ.

  • Wink

Her whole look is fun and youthful. She is perfection. An absolute vision of loveliness.

  • Cyprienne Zed

  • Judy_J

    This makes me very happy!

  • alliekat9090

We havent had a fashion goddess in Hollywood like this for DECADES. I can only compare her to Audrey Hepburn in that when she shows up everyone and I mean EVERYONE else looks just…meh.

  • I need this dress. To wear while vacuuming.

  • Michael_Jones

Lupita = greatness. I also struggled through all of Drag Race last night — wow, that was a lot of of loud TV coming at me…

  • Laura Livingston

Really? She is fab and all but all she needs is a basket of rose petals to be a flower girl at a wedding. Too twee.

    • alyce1213

      We stand alone, I think.

      • elleg929

Y’all are not alone. I stand with you.

      • Sunraya

I stand with you, too. Too young and unsophisticated for her.

  • Jacob Bowen

Oh Lasagna, please stop trying to hijack the gay vernacular…. Lupita looks DAMN FABULOUS!

    • demidaemon

FOR REAL. I have never felt such sympathy for a group of reality TV contestants. Just think about the poor queens who were being sequestered after elimination and what they had to deal with for the next two weeks.

  • B_C_J

Perfection & the metallic shoe looks great

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    BRAVA!!! 🙂

  • Stella Zawistowski

Love Lupita, as always. That dress could so easily go twee (imagine it on Taylor Swift!), but with that hair…that is STYLE.

But all I can think of, especially after the first four words after the photos, is how impatiently I’m waiting for a Rucap!

  • ChaCha_70

Is anyone else super excited for Miss Lupita that she is the new face of Lancome?!

    • KendraMR

I was grinning from ear to ear when I hear the news.

    • DTLAFamilies

    • alyce1213

Lancome made a very smart choice, her face is unforgettable.

  • stubbornthoughts

While I don’t think this is necessarily a WERQ for Lupita (the woman has set a high bar for herself!), she looks super fabulous. Thank God for Lupita, ya’ll.

  • Miss Ruth

Lovelovelove the dress, but can’t with the shoes. They look…sweaty, and her toe cleavage is giving me the cognitive dissonance.

  • Jessica Freeman

Oh Lupita, I have missed you. Love the shoes, go on girl.

  • Janet B

Love the dress on her. (Although it does remind me a bit of a bag my grandmother used)
I really dislike the shape of the shoes.

  • Cheryl

Omigawd…..Perfect. Seriously breathtaking. The shoes seem a bit controversial, but I like them.

Ellen DeGeneres said a few weeks ago that there was an earthquake in L.A. but did you see Lupita Nyong’o? She looked great in it.

  • KendraMR

I was so giddy when I saw this Lupita post; she just brightens up my day. Anyway, she’s perfection as usual; and like my fellow brown sisters have stated, Ms. Lupita is wearing some sort of Afro-textured hairpiece or hair extensions.

  • DTLAFamilies

It’s remarkable how she can pull off so many different looks. This dress is so girly and sweet and yet we’ve seen her bust out a fierce, sleek look without breaking a sweat.

  • alyce1213

She’s the freshest, most beautiful face anyone can imagine, and her hairdo today is to die for, but I just don’t like little girl dresses on grown-ass women. IMO it’s a little ridiculous, she’s 31 years old — it’s way too twee.

  • kcnitch

She’s lovely, but I think the shoes take it down from WERQ for me. I’m so glad she got another contract, this time with Lancome, because it means we’ll be seeing her more often.

    • random_poster

The shoes take it down for me, too.

  • StillGary

I will be patient — but that was RuPaulalooza — so much to discuss!

  • SugarSnap108

On anyone else older than 19, I’d think this dress was too precious. But she makes everything WERQ.

She has that thing where she’s goddess yet girl-next-door, regal but real … I dunno. I’m incoherent.

  • Luzia

it’s very obviously not her hair, it’s extensions. You can even see how structure is different, it’s kinda glossy looking.

it’s interesting that earlier TLo were kind of snarky towards Jennifer Garner for wearing extensions. They are in general tend to be little bit more milder with women of colour. White girls get all the sarcasm (but i love sarcasm though)

    • We don’t have a problem with extensions. We have a problem with really noticeable extensions. And if we’re “milder” about women of color and their hair, it’s because we acknowledge that we’re fairly ignorant on the matter and want to be educated on it.

      • Luzia

Lupita extensions are noticeable (just like in Jennifer’s case). As i said you can see obviously different structure of her real hair and the piece (i don’t have a problem with it people, just observation. i like her hair here)

i didn’t mean milder about their hair, just towards them and their style in general. Such is my impression from reading your blog. Again, i don’t have a problem with it, i love sarcasm and criticism, that’s why i love this blog

        • We didn’t find it as obvious as you do, which is why we asked the question. We absolutely cop to being milder in our criticisms of black women’s hair for the reason we noted, but we honestly don’t think we’re “milder” in our overall criticism of women of color.

    • ecallaw1977

I seem to remember TLo being pretty critical with Viola Davis about her wigs, but maybe I’m not remembering that correctly. At the very least when she would wear her hair in a natural style they highly encouraged her to keep doing that!

      • marlie

And Octavia Spencer, too (and rightly so, I might add).

    • marlie

I think it’s a given that a lot of ladystars wear extensions for events/appearances/etc. My interpretation of the criticism is when it’s not done well, or when it doesn’t contribute anything to the overall look. In Lupita’s case, it’s clearly a way to mix up hairstyles for someone without a lot of hair (without going the route of putting a full-on wig on her), and I think most people – or at least those with an understanding of Black hair – know or assume that they’re extensions.

With other ladystars, their hairpieces just don’t work sometimes. As with Jennifer’s (though I don’t think that hers were all that bad myself), being able to “tell” where the hairpieces were inserted sort of ruins the look. Same thing when a celeb is wearing a long braid or ponytail that’s clearly a different color and/or texture from her own hair. The idea is – even though we all know they’re wearing hairpieces/extensions – to make it LOOK like it’s the star’s own hair.

      • Guest

        i see a contradiction

        > “The idea is – even though we all know they’re wearing hairpieces/extensions – to make it LOOK like it’s the star’s own hair.”

in Lupita’s case it’s very obviously extensions — but it is all fine

in Jennifer’s case it is extensions (although it’s not that obvious for me personally, at least structure of her extensions IS the same as her real hair) — but it is apparently a no-no

one girl is praised for her VERY obvious extensions and other is not so much

        • marlie

I don’t think it’s a contradiction. We only know Lupita’s are extensions because her hair wasn’t that long, say, last week. That’s what I mean by “we know.” In Jennifer’s case, they’re not different colors or textures than her real hair, but you can sort of tell where her hair suddenly gets fuller. But, maybe Jen’s not the best example. Check out January Jones from 4/3. She has this sloppy-looking ponytail in a color completely different from her own hair. THAT’s an egregious use of the hair extensions.

          • Guest

“We only know Lupita’s are extensions because her hair wasn’t that long, say, last week”

umm, did you saw pictures? Texture of her weave is different than texture of her real hair. Piece is glossier. I mean, are you kidding me? It’s SO obvious

“In Jennifer’s case, they’re not different colors or textures than her real hair, but you can sort of tell where her hair suddenly gets fuller.”

sort of. My hair sometimes looks like this and i don’t wear extensions. I would never guess. You seem to be very selective in your criticism

” Check out January Jones from 4/3. She has this sloppy-looking ponytail in a color completely different from her own hair.”

or maybe that’s how she coloured her hair? There is such a thing as two-tone colouring, or several tones colouring. I mean Beyonce constantly goes with hair like this (but she obviously weaved out 24/7)

          • marlie

Clearly, we don’t see things the same way. No biggie.

          • demidaemon

To be fair, I think Guest here has some unrealistic expectations of how hair is styled and looked at for people with different hair lengths and textures. Jennifer already has quite a bit of hair; Lupita does not. It’s like trying to compare apples to hippopotamuses.

          • boweryboy

I’m somehow going to work the phrase, “Weaved out 24/7” into a conversation. I don’t know how but it’s going to happen.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Somehow I can’t get Fierce out of an outfit with a flouncy skirt and flowers. Love me some Lupita, but I don’t this this is her dress.

  • bhl_1123

I’m going to need to her to spill her gym secrets, because as beautiful as her ensemble is, all I can think is “what do I have to do to get arms like that?!?”

  • Joanie

Gentlemen, I was so very sorry to miss your signing last night, but my back went out again and there was no way on earth I could have stood in line (not even if George Clooney offered to hold me the entire time). I’m also very sorry that you missed Lupita. I have a feeling she’d have hugged you both for ages and you’d have exchanged numbers, gone for many incredible lunch dates, and you’d regale us with hilarious story after hilarious story about your adventures.

  • Mim McDonald

So gorgeous! I wasn’t sure about the tall hair until the third and fourth photos – what a profile!

  • Best hair yet. I love her so.

  • BobStPaul

    Love everything except the hair.

  • Lilithcat

    Loyal opposition here.

I do not like that dress on her. It’s perfect for Kiernan Shipka, though.

    • boweryboy

The print and color look fabulous on her, but I’m not loving the silohuette. Maybe lengthen it a bit or translate it to a sheath dress?

  • NinjaCate

All I can say is that I cannot wait until her official Lancôme images are released and we are permitted to fawn all over them.

    • MilaXX

She has one on her IG along with the product used to create that particular face.

  • quiltrx

Such a pretty dress! I twitch at the hem, though…is it just serged? On both Lupita and the model, there are strings and a ‘raw’ look to the edge. That’s a copout. I’m okay with the shoes, but in my mind a flirty, full skirt demands pointed toes. And maybe even a kitten heel. (It’s an Audrey thing….)

    • Kristie Cochran

Yes, looks like it is serged. It also looks like the dress is made of linen, so it should have been finished with a rolled hem by sewing machine, not a serger

  • katiessh

I need the RPDR recap so I can have somewhere to discuss laganga’s super weird sashay as she left. what was that?! on another note, lupita is flawless as usual

    • Aurora Leigh

I noticed that too! I think Laganga said that she was going to chassé away, which she then did (her little glide off the runway). What confused me was whether Laganga misunderstood that Ru has been saying “sashay away” all these years, because she made some comment to the effect that she was going to be the first person to do it right.

But I totally need that RPDR Recap!

    • MilaXX

It was a feeble attempt at humor on her part. She was doing a chassé, which is a dance move. Remember her drag mother is Alyssa Edwards who is a trained dancer. On anyone else it would have been funny but by the time she was sent packing most of us were just happy to see her go.

      • katiessh

god even her exit was exhausting. even when she says how she’s given up everything for this. haven’t a lot of these drag queens given up a lot?! sigh laganga

  • boweryboy

It’s totally a hairpiece. There’s a kind of sloppy and greasy gray texture difference towards the back where most of the attaching is done. As long as a lady of color has some hair on her head, there’s a way to attach more. Some of the styles my sisters and cousins wear boggles my mind.

  • majorbedhead

On anyone else (besides Kid Shipka, maybe) I would say that dress is twee as fuck. Somehow, Lupita makes it sing. Maybe it’s her sculpted arms and gorgeous gams that make it go from girly to amazing. I don’t know what it is, but man, it’s working.

  • Aidan B

This should read “WERQ- Academy-Award Winner and Reigning Queen of the Carpet Lupita Nyong’o”

  • Fuchsiaforever

WERQ!!! And I’m glad someone cleared up the hairpiece question. I was wondering myself the same thing!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The other great film beauty/fine actress of her generation. The Gay Uncles gave us all a two-fer today while jet-lagged! Well done, sirs.

  • Tee

Definitely a piece. And I have to say if you’re going to borrow hair, this is the way to do it.

  • melanie0866

I like that the shoes are a sort of pearlized finish, instead of just being stark white.

  • Tracy_Flick

She really is a once-in-a-lifetime style icon.

  • MaggieMae

    Blows me away.

  • Imasewsure

That is one fantastic dress… hopefully the twee-osphere will not notice it. Definitely needed the edge of a fashionista to make it WERQ

  • Vee

Her stylist has mentioned that she does use some pieces in her hair. But what a clever way to deploy hair pieces!

  • Dagney

  • Sophie

Amazing dress, amazing jewellery, amazing Lupita – I’m not sold on her hair, though. I like her best with really short hair.

    • rosanegra

I agree but I’m glad she serves up texture in her different styles.

  • I suspect I feel about missing the signing the way you gentlemen felt about missing LUPITA. There is no justice in this universe! (And she looks, inevitably, utterly gorgeous)

  • Jacqueline Wessel

What? I was totally expecting to see those bright blue bridesmaid pumps. This is better, she looks fab as always.

  • Lily

Real or no, the top pouf on the hair gives balance to the bouncy a-line of that skirt. Perfection!

  • Suzanne Johnson

There’s a rumor, not yet confirmed as far as I know, that Lupita may be playing the female lead in a film adaption of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, “Americanah.” I’m reading the book now, and I think it would be a fabulous vehicle for Lupita and many other black actors.

    • MilaXX

I heard about that. I hope she does.

    • alyce1213

I like to imagine movie projects, and the perfect person in the perfect role. As soon as I first saw Lupita, I thought she should play Miriam Makeba in a biopic. There’s a documentary (“Mama Africa”), but a dramatization of her life would be wonderful, for her music and her humanitarian work, and who better than Lupita? She’s young enough for the early years and could be aged for Makeba’s later years. I wish someone would make that happen.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes! Now I know what’s been missing in my life-Lupita-love, love this look. And cher uncles, consider yourselves gently hugged as you quietly weep.

  • NMMagpie

    This just makes me happy.

  • e jerry powell

    Why is this “Fresh Faces?”

They have Lupita; they don’t need any others.

  • mrspotts66

    she’s stunning. love the dress.
    and those arms. omg.

  • Aurumgirl

She is simply breathtaking, and no matter what she is wearing, that gorgeous smile is the real reason.

  • Trickytrisha

Damn, I’ve flat run out of superlatives.

  • AzSportsGirl

That dress would read #TweeAsFuck on any other mere mortal woman over driving age, but she made me think Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She’s that freaking magical.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for keeping people updated on the RuPaul recap, I know I look forwards to your take on things and the conversation it fosters. Also, Lupita looks unbelievable here but I think that has been covered. I was also curious about the hair.

    • Aurora Leigh

I’m sorry! I think I accidentally down-voted you when I meant to do the opposite! I think I’m twitchy from RPDR recap withdrawal!

  • Sara__B

These photos give me as big a smile as the photos of Bill and Kathy and their adorable baby did. Thanks, TLo!

  • joything

  • Grrrrllllll You got it going on. That dress is delicious.

  • B. Garcia

Love her. Love the dress. Could do without the misplaced merkin.

    • LadyLuck777

I just hurt myself laughing. It’s sad that I know what that is.

  • GeoDiva

Great comment threads, especially on the hair. I’ve missed Miss Lupita!

  • Sunraya

I don’t like her in girly-girl clothes. She has an enviable edge, and it clashes with this girl look. She can had,e sophisticated edginess, and and I wish she would stick with that. AndI think this is a younger girls’ dress.

    • Mousentrude

I agree. And I think her hair is too edgy for the dress. Bah humbug.

  • EEKstl

Cliche Alert notwithstanding, is this goddess a breath of Spring or what?

  • Therese Bohn

Love! Love her. Just love. She is Spring.

  • colorjunky

Color of shoes okay, that round toe look is not flattering on her!

  • JynxTheCat

not her hair. Girls of color hair grows painfully slow

    • Isy

Not true. Once I stopped doing things to my hair like blowdrying and chemical straightening, my hair grew like weeds. Maybe not noticeable to onlookers since my hair is curly (it perpetually floats above my shoulders no matter the length), but once I pull it, you can see it reaches my navel…. and this time last year, I’d just cut it to midback.

      • JynxTheCat

very cool and I have had friends report the same thing however. Her hair did not grow like this in this time.

        • Isy

Didn’t say her hair did since I can see where the extensions are attached. I’m just pointing out not to generalise and make blanket statements, cos “painfully slow” isn’t always true! That’s all.

  • onefifteen

We get it, T Lo. You want to style her already! Chillax, my dear uncles.

  • Akemi
