Les Boys: Mad Men Season 7 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on April 03, 2014

Let’s play Rate-A-Suit! Because there’s really not much else to say when faced with a red carpet sausage party. Hit it, boys!

Jon Hamm

 Adequate.

Ben Feldman

 Adequate.

Jay R. Ferguson

 Adequate.

John Slattery

 Above-average.

Vincent Kartheiser

Adequate.

Sorry, boys. It wouldn’t be fair to compare you to the ladies because they all get high end fashion to wear. We imagine Slattery and Hamm get some free suitage, but the rest of y’all are probably on your own. So we won’t yell, but you all failed to impress.  That’s some shiny, ill-fitted suitery going on there, men.

    • The Versatile Chef

You can take the Hamm. I find Mr. Slattery quite swoon-worthy.

      • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

It’s not the best photo of him, but yeah we’d have to fight over him

      • MartyBellerMask

        I’ll take Feldman. Super adorable.

        • JeanProuvaire

I never used to like the travel-sized ones, but Ben Feldman has made me see the light.

          • MartyBellerMask

Face it, he’s the least-crappy looking of the lot. ;) Normally, I like Ferguson, but he looks pretty awful here.

            • mshesterp

Ferguson made me think he was Zach Galifinakis–no bueno. And I usually think he’s adorable on the show with his fuzzy bear self.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

I initially read “…shiny, ill-fitted shittery …” which in this context is equally appropriate.

    • lundibleu

Hamm and Slattery at least get reasonable fitting suits, the others all look less impressive. Ben Feldman is probably the worst offender (or unluckiest, depending on pov) – he’s cute and deserves a nicer suit than that.

      • demidaemon

I don’t know. The length of Hamm’s suit coat is making his legs look shorter than they should, in my opinion. It’s a nice color, though.

    • Bozhi

At least they wore suits. Most guys on the red carpet these days look like they spent the night getting drunk under a freeway.

    • georgie

Why does Ponyboy look like Zach Galifianakis?

      • MikeW_Vegas

I was just about to post the exact same thing.

        • Julie Parr

Whoops. I should have read through the comments first, obviously!

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Well, Zach Galifianakis is an awfully popular dude these days. If an actor has the power to strike a resemblance, it’s certainly smart to take advantage of it. (And I swear he must have practiced that squinty-eyed look that Galifianakis kept giving Obama in that interview.)

    • suzq

Slattery for the win! Jon is busting out of his suit, as per usual. Narrow lapels do nothing for him. Frankly everyone except Roger Sterling needs a damned tailor!

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Heh, is that why he looks like he can’t lower his arms?

    • alyce1213

I misread: “Slattery and Hamm get some free sausage . . .”
Jon Hamm’s suit is too small and he has thigh bulge. You’d think he’d have learned to empty his trouser pockets by now.
Slattery wins, even though he could have stepped it up with a better tie. The rest, feh.

      • decormaven

And a pocket square. That would have nailed it for John.

    • NMMagpie

LOVE Slattery’s youthified rockin’ hair. #singles

      • Aurora Leigh

        Sideburns!

        • travelgirl28

          This!

    • marlie

At least they’re all wearing suits. And Itis not the worst-fitting suitery we’ve seen featured here. So, s’ok. Slattery wins this round, though.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Jay R. Ferguson IS Wolfman Jack…

      • SparkleNeely

I was thinkin’ more Sasquatch but we’re on the same wavelength, man……

    • MK03

YUM all around. Even Vinnie as he waits for his hairline to grow back in.

    • BobStPaul

Who knew Ginsberg was so attractive? Talk about someone inhabiting his character.

    • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I have such a crush on Ben Feldman. What a cutie!

    • uprightcitizen

These modern, super fitted suit cuts are doing Jon Hamm no favors. He looks bottom-heavy and hippy, and carrying crap around in his front pockets on the red carpet isn’t helping. Kartheiser’s suit is actually quite nice and appears to fit well. He just chose the most boring shirt and tie possible. But I am delighted to see Jay Ferguson in a gray suit with cordovan shoes. That’s just happiness, is what that is.

      • SparkleNeely

Hamm is probably playing some pocket pool. Heh. Also, VK’s expression just makes him look, well, high. Suit’s ok, though.

    • MilaXX

Hamm’s jacket looks a hair too tight and I hate his matchy blue shoes. Ben looks like he’s wearing thrifted or at least borrowed clothes like his character. Everybody else tried but just looks okay.

    • SugarSnap108

If Slattery had chosen a decent tie with some color contrast to the suit, I’d have no complaint. As it is, he wins easily. I think Hamm looks the worst (in a tight race). The fit of his suit is horrible.

    • Evan

Does anyone not immediately zoom in on Jon Hamm’s crotch area when it’s a post featuring him? Half of me feels bad for him, but the other half doesn’t cause he only has himself to blame.

      • colleenjanel

And once you start with Hamm, you can’t help but compare!

      • MarieLD

Not that I’m spending too much time on this, but doesn’t it look like they all went sans briefs — maybe some sort of support (or lack thereof) for Mr. Hamm.

        • colleenjanel

I don’t know … Stan looks like he’s keepin’ ‘em high and tight.

    • lunchcoma

I’ll extend some sympathy for style limitations, but I’m still going to judge the tailoring, or lack thereof.

It is not that expensive to have your suits properly fitted, and if you actually own them and are presumably going to rewear them, you have plenty of incentive. My middle-income colleagues who aren’t in the business of walking red carpets seem to be able to swing it, or at least the better-dressed ones do.

    • mommyca

I feel like Hamm’s jacket is a tiny bit small and the tie is too wide…

    • Synnamin

I hate Jay’s beard, but I LOVE his shoes. I wish I could get my man into a shiny pair of oxblood shoes…

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Oh man, Vincent had to shave his hairline again. And his suit looks like my dad’s suit when he worked at IBM in the 80’s. Nothing wrong with it – but he looks like my dad in the 80’s.

      • Laylalola

I don’t know why I’ve always had this reaction but it just seems there’s something almost sadistic about Matthew Weiner having VK shave his hairline all these years.

      • demidaemon

I’m not sure he did. I think he either had his hair pinned back or used some pomade.

ETA: On second look, I am convinced he did one of the above. He’s almost got a mini-topknot going on there if you look closely enough.

    • Pennymac

      Are Jon Hamm’s shoes blue?

      • MilaXX

        Bright blue

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Why does Jon Hamm look like he’s holding his breath?

    • colleenjanel

Ummm … Mountain Man Stan appears to be packing some heat.

      • MartyBellerMask

        Yessirree!

    • granite5

Oh I love jon hamm’s suit!!!

    • Julie Parr

I thought Jay R. Ferguson was Zach Galifinakas.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

Yay for furry Stan!!!! BEYOND excited for him!

Oh and I kinda wish Ben had a mustard stain on his suit :)

    • Andrea

Yawn. So yawn that I tried to think of something more exciting during the scroll-down and then I tried to imagine what a post titled Mad Men Lez Bois might look like.

    • YoungSally

Ben appears to he holding his own next to Captain Hamm. TLo — I gather your ratings reflect the suits and not the sausage.

      • MartyBellerMask

If we’re going purely on “sausage”, ahem, Ferguson takes the trophy this time.

        • Guest

Is THAT what that is? I assumed it was the edge of his wallet… but if you’re right, good God.

    • TwiddlyStun

If you show up without your hands in your pockets AND without a lump that is clearly keys or cell phone or something that’s not a fun bulge, you should rate above adequate. Proper fit and hemming put you up another level. Color and pattern (suit, tie, shirt, shoes) can raise or lower your grade. Proper hair and face for extra credit. Neard = automatic failure.

    • joything

I have a feeling Jay R. Ferguson is not meant for suitage.

    • demidaemon

I love how the majority of them are just adequate. But, really, considering the publicity and star-power on display here, you’d think they could shoot a little higher.

That said, Vincent’s hair is looking much better here.

    • lamh36

I don’t watch Mad Men, but I’ve had a serious crush on Feldman since his Drop Dead Diva days!

    • Hetha Innis

Would LOVE to see Slattery rock a Tom Ford suit. Holy shit.

    • quiltrx

It’s sad when the most interesting thing to me in a sausage post is a pair of shoes (Ferguson’s). You’d think these guys would try a little harder, knowing the girls are going to totally turn it out.

    • Fuchsiaforever

      Mega-yawn.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I would have given Ben Feldman a “less than adequate”. Slattery is clearly the winner here, although for the most part it’s a snooze fest.

    • sophie

I think I’m in love? Where was Ben Feldman my whole life?

    • carnush

Oh, how I’ve missed all these beautiful faces. Not even looking at the suits.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

      Now where is Bob Benson??

      • decormaven

Maybe he’ll be the showpiece of Sausage Friday. However, I peeked at a few snaps from this event, and don’t remember seeing him in photos. PLEASE bring Bob Benson back!

        • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Seriously! He was such a highlight of S6.

      • MartyBellerMask

I think we’re supposed to wonder if he’s returning. If he is coming back (oh please lord), they’re probably keeping him out of the press on purpose.

    • MissusBee

I think these guys suffer like the ladies on this show: their screen outfits are so perfect, offscreen suffers by comparison. Especially when you’re talking about suits. As we know from our Uncles, a MM suit tells a whole story in itself.

These just say ‘Erm, hi. I’m a suit.’

    • Prairie

Hamm’s suit looks like it is made from plasticine.

    • AthenaJ

Aw, so nice to see the adorable Ben Feldman! I really miss him on Drop Dead Diva but good for him for getting on a great show like Mad Men, especially since DDD has completely jumped the shark.

    • conniemd

Those are some serious uninspiring ties on the men.

    • Sissy

      i just fell asleep

    • Columbinia

Seems like the slim and simple style of suit that worked so well in the ’60s doesn’t work in this later iteration on the much beefier bodies of this era. Maybe Slattery and Kartheiser come close.

    • KinoEye

YOU GUYS. There’s a video of Jon Hamm from when he was a waiter in the 90s and went on a dating game show. He talks about how fabulous any date with him would be. It’s priceless.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I’m sorry, Feldman and Ferguson don’t look adequate to me. Those suits look cheap, especially Ferguson’s.

    • e jerry powell

I need Jay Ferguson to not be wearing that suit. Or anything else. At all. Ever.

Naked on every red carpet. Every time.

    • zeiserl

There’s something wrong with men’s fashion if so many men end up having a visible penis malfunction. Seriously. It really isn’t that attractive.

    • Darogris

Hamm’s suit looks 2 sizes too small.
If you are a man who is embarrassed about your crotch area being the center of attention, then wouldn’t you wear a suit that is not skin tight?
