Kiernan Shipka in Nina Ricci at the Mad Men Season 7 LA Premiere

Posted on April 03, 2014

Once again, Miss Kiernan wins the night. Other Mad Ladies looked pretty spectacular, but for pure sophisticated, high-end style, you just can’t beat a look like this:

Kiernan Shipka attends the premiere of “Mad Men” Season7 in Los Angeles, California in a Nina Ricci long-sleeved floral jacquard dress paired with Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ sandals, earrings by Melissa Kaye Jewelry and a ring by Graziela Gems.

Nina Ricci Fall 2014 Collection

To be honest, it’s a highly specific style of dress; not suitable to most. The textile and the top half are beautiful and sophisticated, but the skirt is purely juvenile, which makes it the perfect dress for a teenager with some taste and style – and hard to wear for anyone else. Girl, that’s YOUR dress and your dress only.

Absolutely love the color story here. Hate the shoes, though. You probably figured on that. Not a hundred percent on the way the skirt’s hemmed either. Quibbles, though. She nailed it, like she usually does. We wonder if all the other Mad Ladies are intimidated by her style. They should be.

That girl amazes everytime! She just keeps getting prettier and prettier as she gets older, no?

      • Meg0GayGuys6

SO pretty! And I gotta agree with our uncles, she totally looks like a Hamm/Jones combo.
It helps that she always looks like she’s having a great time!

      • rhymeswithorange

I think she looks like Alicia Silverstone!

    • alyce1213

Well, I’ve gotta say this isn’t my favorite dress on her. I love the color, but it’s a little heavy, stiff, and off in proportion — I think the skirt is too small for the top. She looks adorable anyway, great smile and poise, as usual.

      • MishaFoomin

I agree about the shoes. If only she could set a trend for fun, low heels.

        • SparkleNeely

Gosh, right? I have a daughter the same age and I say no to anything over 4 inches. Stilettos send an aesthetic signal of mature sexuality. Much like animal prints do. They just don’t belong on anyone this young.

        • Alicia

Especially since lower heels are back in fashion this year! There are some really nice 2″ sandals around.

      • SugarSnap108

Completely agree. She can’t be anything but adorable, but the dress is not quite working, and I’m not a fan of the stilettos.

      • uprightcitizen

I’m with you. The colors and idea of the dress are great and she’s cute as heck per usual. But the fabric feels so heavy … like it’s a costume from a Shakespearean play and that huge pleat in the front of the skirt is downright unattractive. It makes it look like it’s a romper with way too much volume up front. I agree about the shoes too, although it’s at least nice to see a pair of these on someone where they’re not either hanging off the ends, gripping for dear life, or all crazy toes akimbo.

      • what not

I wouldn’t mind the heaviness of the fabric if the pleats didn’t curve out like that. From the front, she looks like she has a small child’s fancy trousers hanging out of her waistband.

      • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

I love her, always, but I agree that the fabric of the dress would make anyone else look like a tufted ottoman.

    • CMCH

A little amusing that “mother” and “daughter” wore the same shoes to this event. Whatever one thinks about them, Kiernan has January beat in every other respect (hair, makeup, outfit).

    • sugarkane105

That shot from behind with the low back seals it. If January and Jessica are anywhere nearby, you just know they’re seething with jealousy.

    • Glam Dixie

I so want to give her an Of Course (in the best way possible) but I hate the way the skirt is folding in between her legs giving it the look of a romper almost from the front so very much. I do love the colors, I love everything but that darn skirt.

      • Aurora Leigh

Yes, the faux-romper pleat really bugs.

      • Jacob Bowen

Yeah I couldn’t even tell if it WASN’T a romper.

        • demidaemon

I was a little unsure as well. I gave her the benefit of the doubt, though. It IS Kiernan, after all.

    • ninamadeleine

That last picture is just amazing. I can’t wait to see what she looks like in a few years. Hopefully she keeps up the amazing fashion sense.

    • Guest

It’s very cute, but I find it unfair to compare her to the other ladies, since she still has the body type that most high-end garments will look good on. (The fact that designers channel gamine-14-year-old when they’re sketching is a whole other problem.) If you’re Kiernan Shipka, the world of designer fashion is your prepubescent oyster; if you’re Christina Hendricks…not so much.

      • shirab

Exactly! Reminds me of a good friend’s frustration when people gush over her lanky, coltish 13-yr-old daughter: “Oh, you look just like a model!” As my friend says, what she looks like is a 13-yr-old, and she won’t (and shouldn’t, and shouldn’t expect or try to) look the same in a few short years.

      • butterflysunita

I agree, and think it’s highly problematic that the designers idealize 14 year olds with no curves, and refuse to design for women. On the other hand, plenty of teenage gamines still manage to dress badly, so kudos to Kiernan.

    • Laura Renee

The best part is how happy she looks. Just glowing with confidence. She knows she nailed it.

I can’t get over the seam down the middle of the bodice, though. It puzzles me that everyone found this look just perfection, but I am still a fashion newbie, I guess.

    • @Biting Panda

Lovely. The heaviness of the fabric is a bit much, but it’s a stunning look, regardless.

    • frannyprof

I *so* want to be her!!!!

      • Janet B

The look of confidence at her age is priceless.

        • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

If I had that kind of confidence at her age, oh how unbleak my puberty would have been!!!

    • B_C_J

The color is beautiful. The top is fitted to perfection. However the skirt’s pleating is not hanging properly & it looks pretty horrible. Also dislike the two loose pieces of hair framing her face.

    • Sarah

I wish there wasn’t an inverted pleat on the front. It makes the dress go romper/skort and I want it to lay smoother, but otherwise, she really looks nice.

      • sojourneryouth

That’s my only issue with it, as well. The skirt could be just as full, which would keep it youthful, but without the skort-looking pleat.

      • Karen Belgrad

I thought it was a romper until we saw the photo of the dress from the back. That detracts some points from my perspective as well

    • Pamdela

She has to be the casting win of the century. How did they get it so right when they cast that darling little lisper 6-7 years ago? Kiernan Shipka has not only turned out beautiful and a fine actress, she’s completely believable as the daughter of Jon Hamm and January Jones. Love her.

    • hughman

Not a fan of the skort illusion but on the plus side if she spills a drink it will bead and roll right off.

    • Jessica O’Connell

As much as I’m with you on disliking that we’re looking at another pair of naked shoes, I really appreciate that it doesn’t look like her toes are gripping on for dear life or that her feet are slowly dying. Perhaps it’s because they’re still such young feet, but they actually manage to look nice in the naked shoes, which is quite an accomplishment.

    • SuzyQuzey

Very odd center pleat on the skirt. Makes it look like a romper. A faux romper. Fomper?

      • Mothra

kind of like skort. But not really.

    • Anna

      Eat your heart out, world.

These “nudist” shoes are the least irritating to me on Miss Kiernan. She’s got the power.

    • stubbornthoughts

For some reason, those shoes seem to work well on her. Could be an age thing, she can pull them off.

LOVE that last pic of her back. She’s simply stunning.

    • Stella Zawistowski

She looks fabulous and she knows it.

    • Judy_J

      Clear winner. She looks fabulous!

    • KinoEye

SQUEE. Love it. Don’t love the way the skirt is falling — makes it look almost like another romper — but the color is gorgeous, she is gorgeous and makes me ridiculously happy in that second shot.

    • Sophie

It’s so heavy and stiff… But the colour and print look great on her, and I can barely see her shoes so it’s fine.

    • SugarSnap108

I have to disagree. She is freaking adorable, but as others have pointed out, this looks like a romper in drapery fabric. I think Christina won the night.

    • clevergirl70

      I gay-gasped, and I’m not even gay.

    • nannypoo

I love this. It’s definitely not a dress just anyone can wear. She is so fabulous.

    • Tanya Wade

Baby Kylie does it again. This girl should give lessons. (and this is one instance I like the naked shoes)

    • SouthernGirlRena

I can’t say I like the dress, especially the ginormous pleat in the front, but she definitely won me over with her smile and the sparkle in her eyes. Adorable.

    • Danielle

Yes hi is this where I can sign up to have her gays dress me for a day? Over there? Thank you.

    • decormaven

Bella, bella! This is one polished look.

    • kimmeister

I don’t like the neckline – it almost looks like it’s on backwards.

    • Jessica Freeman

I’m not overly impressed, the fabric is really heavy and the shoes aren’t enough.

    • Pennymac

I love it! And I actually approve of the shoes!

    • Gatto Nero

The bodice is gorgeous, but I kept peering at the skirt to make sure it wasn’t a dreaded romper — that massive pleat is misleading. Wish she hadn’t worn the naked shoe.
But her cool-toned makeup really sets off the dress, and she is owning this look. She looks beautiful and confident.

    • MilaXX

Like the dress, hate the shoe.

    • rkdgal

Zosia Mamet needs to hire Miss Shipka’s brow wrangler.

    • Trickytrisha

    • marlie

You know, I don’t even like the dress all that much. I think the fabric is too heavy and a little aging. That being said, Kiernan manages to make the look her own anyway, through sheer willpower.

I like the shoes, even if some are going to say that they’re too high. Her hair and makeup and youthful and pretty. And I might have to jump her for that ring.

    • crash1212

Jeez, this kid can even make naked shoes work. Notice how her toes aren’t gripping on for dear life? She’s not the same as the rest of us. Stunning.

    • Boop

She is absolutely adorable in anything. And while I do love the back of the dress, I’m not fond of the material. It reminds me of my mother’s sofa from 1986, which I couldn’t sell in 2010 because it was so dated. And that is the 2nd 80’s reference I’ve made in a comment here. Vincent and Keirnan are kicking my 80’s ass.

    • Jacob Bowen

She wins because her smile alone SELLS this outfit.

    • NBG

Hate the shoes, love the dress and adore the lip color. May the uncles always be in your corner, little one.

    • Julie Parr

You know, sometimes it just pays to be 15.

      • SparkleNeely

        She’s 14. She’ll be 15 in November, a Scorpio.

    • Phyllis Craine

Edie Sedgewick! In a good way.

    • prisma

      Love it!

    • MarieLD

      Love her face and smile.

    • JP

Cute as a button, and looks happy in her clothes!

    • ScarlettHarlot

Looks great! I wonder if any of the ladies knew that backdrop was going to be so damned busy.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Sally for the win!!! She’s on my Irrational Like List. She reminds me of my favorite niece. :)

    • Lilak

Cool. calm, collected, happy, lovely and talented. My oh my.
(One teeny tiny note, however: closed-heel strappy sandals aren’t the best choice unless you’ve got racehorse ankles. I feel kinda bad suggesting that … but on the other hand, I’m glad she’s not perfection itself 100% of the time.)

    • demidaemon

On anyone else, I think I would hate this dress, but, as TLo said, this is the perfect dress for her and only her. Add to that her saleswomanship in the dress and you have a knockout combination.

I am undecided on whether or not I approve of the shoes, though. Suggestions?

    • quiltrx

I will be glad when the center-seamed bodice’s moment is OVER. Other than that, which isn’t her problem anyway, she looks great!

      • conniemd

Yeah, what’s up with that? It’s not difficult to do the bodice on the fold so you don’t need a center seam. I don’t see the point of having the seam at all, though at least they did line up the fabric at the seam. But why go through ll that work?

    • Pat Garrett

She looks upholstered…..(think Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind………)

    • mjmiller77

love the color. detest the dress – looks stiff and thick, like brocade curtains, and there were only little pieces to sew together. She is adorable tho, as always.

    • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

Kudos to her and her stylist. She really is hitting it perfectly, all the time. So great, for her age.

    • Joey Melliza

shame on you shoes … should’ve gotten some fierce booties

    • KateM

So pretty and appropriate. I always love her makeup, especially that rosey, glowy lip she always sports. Would love to know what she uses.

    • Patrick Cleary

I love that it has pockets. Pockets for all skirts and dresses, please!

    • MissusBee

She’s fab but also closer to model-age than most red carpet women (especially her co-stars), which can’t hurt. However most teens (and celebs under 25) feel the need to try too hard in some way, where she has no problem with wearing something beautiful and simple and accessorising with clean hair and a big smile. That sets her apart from 99.999% of 14 year-olds, and 95% of the celebrity population in general.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

The dress is fierce but the shoes – what can I say that January Jones wearing exact same doesn’t.

    • melanie0866

I might have to cover my eyes to avoid being blinded by the adorableness.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

“We wonder if all the other Mad Ladies are intimidated by her style. They should be.” EXACTLY what I was thinking! Intimidated, and jealous.

    • Columbinia

We’ve always suspected that a lot of designer clothes weren’t made for grown-up women, haven’t we?

    • LJCdoc

Agree that this is only her dress, but I think Christina Hendricks and Jessica Pare (I KNOW??!!!!) looked better.

    • Rachel Lee

Really? I see old couch. It’s dreary and that poof of skirt looks ill-tailored. A very standard teenager dress.

    • MannahattaMamma

Intimidated because she’s wearing an old couch and STILL pulls it off (or almost).

    • FridaStaire

      Bit old for her?

    • weakforchic

      nailed it. lovely
