Now those are the diamonds of a celebrity.

But everyone in the background looks completely unimpressed. And true, the black dress + beige shoe combination isn’t exactly inspired.

And SIGH, did no one think to tighten her bra straps?

      • YoungSally

No one recognizes her as she is fully clothed and does not appear to be doing the dougie for Terry Anderson

    • Catsss

I don’t know… she looks a little matronly and dumpy to me… Which is totally not how Kate Upton should look

      • 3boysful

The styling is too mature–hair, shoes. Those shoes belong with a work suit, not this dress. She can send me the earrings.

        • Judih1

Totally agree with your comments, but she needs to send ME the earrings :)

      • uprightcitizen

Two men behind her in black suits in that one shot … I had to look at it twice because it looked like her waist disappeared. The whole look is kind of matronly. Like a middle-aged society wife in the 50s. But even if it’s too mature, that is some killer hair, and she is giving amazing face.

      • sojourneryouth

I find Kate pretty, cute, an apparently nice girl, whatever…but she just isn’t glamorous to me. Nothing about her look is “high fashion” in my opinion. She is clearly trying to diva it up, but this whole look isn’t working–schlubby dress, lacquered hair, bad makeup, the whole 9. She could do better than this, but she’ll never be a fashion icon of any kind.

        • Carla_Charlton

No, she’s not glamorous at all. But she’s a pretty, healthy, fresh-looking young woman and surely someone could do her up in a way that’s appropriate for the occasion, but plays on those strengths. This is just not it for her. Even she looks uncomfortable.

          • tereliz

Right? How ’bout a color? Or maybe something by one of the MANY American sportswear designers who also do the occasional gown: Kors, Hilfiger, von Furstenberg…

      • VicD

The dress makes her look lumpy! How is that possible? She’s proved time after time that all her lumps are in the right places, yet this dress makes them look so … wrong.

    • The Versatile Chef

If you’re going to wear that style of vintage, you have to have the accompanying proper support garments.

The lovely Ms. Upton might have taken a page from the Christina Hendricks manual on this one.

      • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Yes. With this kind of vintage, you need to recreate the look, not just put on the dress. Meaning, proper underpinnings, stockings, pretty black shoes with decorations or Spring-o-laters with lots of bling. Hair needed a little more Dippity Do and teasing. She’s lovely, but knock your ass out was right there.,,,

    • Sarah

Bra strap, silly putty shoe, titscrepancy. ARGH. She is so purty, but the details add up to not so good.

      • The Versatile Chef

Good foundation garments would have gone a long way to improving this look.

        • Renaissance_Man_ATL

          And better shoes.

    • R.A.

This girl needs new hair gays. It’s always styled in such and awkward and matronly way.

    • @Biting Panda

I see someone is worried we won’t be taking her serious as an actress.

      • KingCrazy

Exactly my first thought. They went WAY overboard here.

    • KinoEye

Whut? Kate Upton… You’re probably the most in-demand model in the world for certain sections of the fashion industry at the moment. WHY are you dressing more than twice your age, and in a very unflattering way that hides all your bountiful assets to boot?

I’m willing to bet she is no great actress, but based on looks alone, I’d cast her in a Marilyn Monroe biopic over pretty much anyone else working today. Not to say Michelle Williams didn’t knock it out of the park — but with the beauty mark, the shape of her face, her figure and the blondeness, Kate comes pretty damn close to the real thing.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Vanity Fair featured Upton on one of their issues in 2012 or 2013, and styled her in a retro pin-up girl, which worked very well with her face and figure.

    • hughman

Honey, dressing like Meryl Streep won’t win you an Oscar. My grandmother would have had an EGOT by now.

      • Evan

I think this would look great in a Grace Kelly kind of way if it had more shape to it. As it is, it’s making her look wide. It’s like the New Look done wrong.

        • Imasewsure

I think she nailed the look of Princess Grace in her 50’s not Princess Grace in the ’50s… dowdy duchess at best

    • Evan

That’s a terrible shape for her. It’s making her look wide. It needs a more cinched waist if she wants to go for the classic or retro look. I kind of feel like she’s the new Anna Nicole Smith.

      • KateShouldBeWorking

I saw other pics where she looked more like you’d expect. I think the wideness is due to some black-clothed people behind her, obscuring her shape.

    • Christine Hart

She looks fat and we all know she’s far from it.

      • Dany

Darling, if you think that’s fat then most regular folks must look like King-Kong and Godzilla to you.

    • Danielle

      I can’t with that hair.

    • nannypoo

This is a woman I absolutely cannot stand, for no particular reason, but still, she looks so bad here that I almost feel sorry for her.

    • Tanya Wade

Her non-stylist should be shot for that look. The shoes look like baby poop pumps.

    • Vegas Girl

I wonder if the guys in black suits moved if it would be as bad as we all think it is. As it is, her dress keeps blending in with them, making it impossible to tell where she ends and they start. I think that’why she looks so wide, not necessarily because of the dress???

      • Sarah

I think you’re right. I didn’t think she looked wide, anyway, but I see what you mean about that one head-on shot. The side one shows the fullness of the skirt as it comes away from the waist. It is kind of Sophia Loren-y to me.

        • Vegas Girl

Exactly! I looked at the front pic about 3 trying to figure out why it looks so weird before I noticed them.

    • Hoffa_w_HerHead

      Girl that’s not your neckline

    • Kelly

Pretty sad all the way around. When Kate Upton looks like Barbie’s grandmother, complete with ugly shoes and an ill-fitting bra, somebody’s stylists are not earning their keep.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Barbie’s grandmother-sadly true. Kate Upton is an attractive young woman with a curvy figure-why not have some fun with her RC look?

    • decormaven

That is some seriously scary hair. [Runs away...]

      • demidaemon

I don’t know how much product was involved in that hideousness. I do know that it is now a toxic waste zone. NOT RIGHT.

    • SugarSnap108

Even if the bra strap hadn’t fallen down (GAH!), the bodice is just odd and unflattering. And those shoes need to be destroyed.

    • JauntyJohn

She put the effort in, that’s for sure.
I think it’s thisclose to being smashing. I like many of the individual elements (length/flare of skirt, flattering collar line) but taken together it just doesn’t work.

      Also, hate the shoes.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      What a mess.

    • Mothra

She looks really stiff for someone who poses for a living. Like a living Barbie.

    • NMMagpie

      Real housewife of Washington DC.

    • jilly_d

      ….the FUCK??

    • frannyprof

Bra strap on the RC. Rookie mistake.

    • suzq

      1. Something About Mary hair
      2. The waist is hitting her too high, cutting off her torso and adding 20 lbs that she doesn’t have.
      3. Her bodice is melting.
      4. It’s a shame about the shoes.
      5. Can’t tell if the bra strap is intentional or not…in any case, it looks cheap.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Guuuuuurl, that’s NOT yo’ dress! It is, however, your makeup. Serving early-90s supermodel realness. The hair and diamonds set it off, but when combined they take this to a mature socialite place. I don’t think Kate is at that point in life, yet. The shoes are awful.

      • demidaemon

I don’t know about the make-up. She looks too perfect, if you know what I mean. It just looks caked on like wax.

        • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Maybe it’s because I’m seeing her in photoshopped editorials and not life, but she always looks a little unreal to me.

          • demidaemon

I do feel like–especially this last week–our eyes have been distorted and can no longer understand what we are viewing.

ETA: I think it’s the hair that is throwing everything off for me. It’s tainting everything else from the forehead down.

    • marlie

Aside from the unfortunate bra strap, this is a nice dress – for someone else. This dress is far too “grand dame” for Kate here. Her makeup (‘cept for the lips) is pretty, and her hair is nice but aging as well.

And we won’t speak of the shoes.

    • altalinda

Kim Novak, as I live and breathe!

    • MilaXX

I don’t like this dress on her. It’s a bit mature in a Sophia Loren kind of way. Mind you Kate, Leslie and Cameron were all at the same event.

      • Vtg Fashion Library

Maybe Cameron did her hair, cause it’s got a serious “Something About Mary” situation going on.

    • deelup

Clearly trying to do some Marilyn thing. All in all I think it’s a good direction for her.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Whoever styled Upton really aged her, and not in a good way. That is a rather severe look for a pretty young thing-and what is with the dangling bra strap?

    • lunchcoma

Black dress with nude shoes. Layers of fabric wrapped around a busty, curvy woman. Slipped bra strap.

I hate everything about this. It’s not the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, but it seems like such a waste.

    • what not

Early 30s Scandinavian royal. Well, aside from the poise-destroying bra strap…it’s too much look for her.

      • Fuchsiaforever

        TOTALLY.

    • Jacob Bowen

Girl that is NOT your bouffant!

    • Carly Clement

…. She is 21 years old constantly dressing like a 40+ year old… she should know better than this!

    • Madeline Zappala

she looks like a president’s wife. and BRA STRAP

    • Jessica Wyatt

I admire what she’s trying to do here, but I think it’s falling short.

    • Dagney

Kinda digging the Eva-Zsa Zsa vibe. I suspect the dowdiness that projects on the photo would not exist in real life, given her stature.

    • Coolekat

This is a travesty! Who was her stylist?

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I like the fact that she wanted to do a vintage look. However, I think she should have gone a little more Sophia Loren and less Deborah Kerr.

    • Wendi126

      It feels Ethel Mertzy

      • Pennymac

Going in to my vocabulary STAT

    • demidaemon

She looks like a wax figure. NOT GOOD.

The dress is a big ol’ enh.

    • quiltrx

Wow, this is WILDLY unflattering for her. What a strange, contorted dress. And in these days of elaborate underpinnings available to women of her status, there is NO excuse for bra strap!!

    • Fuchsiaforever

Her legs and and arms are so skinny they don’t match the body….or is it the dress that makes her look bigger than she really is? Wait who the hell IS Kate Upton? I thought this was Margot Robbie…I’m so confused…. Is she considered plus size model or is she preggers? If this really is a profesh model how come she can’t pose in a couple of shots? Strange, strange…..

    • Synnae

I get where she was going but Kate is boxed shaped so she does not have much of a natural
waist. Combine that with a vintage dress where the waist is just too
high and some poor underwear choices which fail to give her an hour
glass shape and you get this!

Shame really because the dress itself is lovely and I think she did have the right idea going retro. Now she just needs to work on the execution (tip from a fellow tall girl – go for reproduction – unlike genuine 50’s dresses they are sometimes cut for girls being 6′)

      • Synnae

Also just realised, she is actually flattening the skirt while posing. Seriously, how is she a model?

    • carnush

Mad Men pilot audition. Awful and unflattering.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I know we’ve had the lingerie strap conversation before, but SURELY a vintage dress would have had them in? And William Banks-Blaney has a reputation for really looking after the women who borrow his dresses, so I can’t believe he didn’t offer her some help in making her look better.

    • sagecreek

      WTF with the bra strap?

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

The dress does nothing for her incredible body. It makes her look dumpy and she’s anything but.

    • Anna

Kate is such a beautiful girl with that rare combination of sexiness and sweetness – but I’ve noticed when she gets dressed up, her clothing and styling choices are almost matronly. This particular outfit is only one of many.

    • cocohall

Where is Dita von Teese when you need her? She could make this work. I have zero knowledge of Miss Upton other than she has very impressive décolletage, but she looks a little bit like a tomboy who has been forced to wear her “big girl” clothes to church. Which is to say, uncomfortable. There is no reason why this shouldn’t work – she is pretty, she has a great body, but she just isn’t owning it. Isn’t she normally a swimsuit model? Or lingerie? She’s probably just not used to such full coverage.

    • conniemd

The design makes her so thick at the waist, I assume unnecessarily.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

MAGIC… a dress and styling that turns her into a matron.

    • KT

Holy shit, this is terrible!!!!!!!! She looks like a 65-year-old woman who gave up on her figure long ago, which is so far from the case…

This is a classic case scenario for women who tend to get labeled as sex objects, and then want to show up looking classy: they go WAYYY too far in the other direction, and just end up looking matronly. The styling is obviously not helping the case — the shoes and THAT HAIR are just awful, and the latter screams politician’s wife. Also, bra strap. Sweetie, there are plenty of options in between “Aging British Royalty” and “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.”

    • Sara Brams-Miller

      The bra bugs. Seriously.

    • MannahattaMamma

why is she wearing a brioche on her head?

    • Michelle Gennari

      Ugh…dem shoes.

    • FridaStaire

Oooh – La Dolce Vita! Brava! (thing with cap sleeves is you don’t know when your bra strap slips, cause there’s something hovering there anyway).

    • dancinfool

      Is that her BRA strap?
