Jennifer Garner in Max Mara at the “Draft Day” Premiere

Posted on April 08, 2014

We realize all eyes are going to go straight to the jumpsuit, but can we talk about the hair for a second?

Jennifer Garner attends the premiere of “Draft Day” at the Regency Bruin Theatre in Los Angeles, California in a Max Mara black jumpsuit paired with a Dana Rebecca Designs bangle, Melissa Kaye Jewelry necklace, rings by Graziela Gems and EF Collection, and a Roger Vivier clutch.

We get why ladies of both the star and non-star persuasion might like to sport extensions. They give you an instant boost of volume and length without all that pesky waiting for it to grow out naturally. But the whole “Why, yes. My hair actually does grow out from my ears” way of styling it only ever calls attention to how fake it is. It always looks to us like the hair version of those feather earrings you can buy out of vans in a parking lot at a concert. All this fluff and volume that starts pretty much right at the ears, in a manner no real hair ever grows. If you can’t spot it, start at the ends of her hair resting on her shoulders and boobs and follow the strands up. They clearly aren’t growing out from her scalp and are tucked in under her real hair. They always look like cocker spaniel ears to us.

It’s a ubiquitous look and it’s probably not going to die soon, but we guarantee we’ll all look back at this period the way we look back on bouffant styles of the ’60s now. It’s going to look very dated very quickly once hairstyles shift away from this look.

We don’t mean to pick on her. This isn’t the worst example of it we’ve seen. It’s just that lately, we’ve started growing tired of the look and how easy it’s become to spot.

In fashion news, that jumpsuit is terrible.

I don’t mind the jumpsuit. I actually think she looks good in it, probably because she’s standing confidently and fiercely as if she were saying “I’m wearing a jumpsuit bitches!”

    • kimmeister

She still has her Alias guns too, I see!

    • marlie

This isn’t the most egregious example of hair extensions that we’ve seen even within the past few days, so I don’t really have a problem with them. And I agree that the jumpsuit isn’t terrible. This is when she should have gone with some killer accessories, though.

      • Sobaika

And hemmed it so it didn’t eat her feet.

  • KingCrazy

I…actually think she looks pretty good in the jumpsuit. I don’t know, I mean all jumpsuits are pretty but, but this one doesn’t make me want to die. She’s pulling it off.

I don’t have much of an opinion on the hair. It doesn’t really bother me. I just think people should stop wearing extensions because it messes with their scalp, and their hairlines.

    • minnye

I’m with you on that. & it makes me a bit uncomfortable that a poor woman somewhere spent many years growing that hair…

  • Calinda_L

    She looks terrific, full stop.

  • Janet B

This isn’t the worst jumpsuit I’ve seen here, but that not saying much.
I would rather have more hair/volume on the top, not around my neck and shoulders.

  • Clash D

I don’t have a problem with the jumpsuit. I have a problem with That hair.

  • Catsss

The jumpsuit doesn’t bother me either and I don’t find her extensions glaringly obvious. What does bug me however is how her jumpsuit strap is on top of a lock of her hair. That would drive me crazy if I were her.

  • Charlotte

Why are lady star pants always so long?? I just don’t understand why they all seems to have a desperate need to hide the fact that they have feet.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I AGREE! A thousand times, I agree! I hate it sooooooooo much.

    • KinoEye

It’s pretty easy to hem most pants, but I’d guess the problem comes from getting looks straight off the runway and not having them tailored (or being unable to tailor them). Lady stars are usually tiny, and most runway models are giraffes.

      • Sarah

I can vouch for the tininess. I went to the Hollywood Costume exhibit at the art museum where I live, and it was chock-full of itty bitty wee costumes from famous movies, stuffed with body forms to make them look human. You could tell from Keanu’s Matrix outfit, the various Queens of England dresses from several movies, Batman, Indy, Jack Sparrow, etc. that all of those peeps are WAY smaller than you think they are on screen. The only ones that looked normal to me were Jake and Elwood’s suits from the Blues Brothers, and really, Jake was fat, and Elwood was a tall mofo and everyone knows it.

        • KinoEye

Haha, when I read that first sentence I interpreted it as you lived IN an art museum, not near one. I was jealous for about 5 seconds before I figured it out. But yep, most of them are wee things. My mom met Cher in the 70s, and said she was very short — shorter than my 5’7 mom. Cher always looks incredibly tall in photos and videos. And yeah, everyone makes fun of Tom Cruise for being short, but lots of boystars are around the same height. The camera magic just hides it.

          • Sarah

Argh! Turrible grammar on my part. (Slaps hand with ruler)

          • KinoEye

Not terrible at all! I liked it, haha. Nothing will ever compare to the news story I received about a man who won a big contest twice in a row. His last name was Gay. Naturally, the person who wrote the headline chose to phrase it as “Gay comes out on top again.”

          • Sarah

            Heheee! Excellent.

          • demidaemon

I didn’t notice it on my first pass, but it now glares at me like the missing commas needed to denote a dependent clause.

          • Beardslee

Hey listen, if it was good enough for Claudia and James, it’s good enough for us.

          • marlie

And most boystars don’t draw additional attention to their height – or lack thereof – by wearing shoes with lifts, and pretending that they’re not short.

        • 3boysful

There’s a movie museum in one of the casino hotels in Deadwood, SD, and all the costumes they had on display were tiny, too.

        • GinnyThePainter

Are you in Phoenix, Sarah? I have to pick up relatives there on Friday and am thinking of taking them to the exhibit. Worth it?

          • Sarah

No, Richmond, VA. Was here a couple of months ago. I liked it a lot, but it was VERY crowded, which is always annoying to me. I did go on the last weekend of the show, so it was bound to be full of last-minuters. The Blues Brothers is my favorite movie of All Time, so I was pretty happy to see their suits. I’d say it is worth it, because there are some cool surprises when you see things up close – not just size, but materials, colors, intricacy, etc. Have fun!

          • GinnyThePainter

I loved the Blues Brothers. Great, historic movie.

Will check out the exhibit and will kindly ask all other visitors to leave.

  • Spicytomato1

I think this is the best she’s looked in a long time, and while I’m not crazy about the jumpsuit, I appreciate the sassiness of the choice for her. She seems more loose and relaxed and glow-y than usual.

I was also going to say I can’t believe how healthy her hair looks…I guess I was fooled and now I feel a bit disillusioned. I don’t think she typically wears extensions, unless she’s been fooling me all along.

  • Daisy Walker

Hate the hair, but hate the jumpsuit more. It needs to DIAF.

  • Glam Dixie

On a scale of one to cocker spaniel, this actually looks pretty good.

    • demidaemon

So what is the official rating?

      • Glam Dixie

I’m thinking she’s at about a 6. Lea Michele comes to mind as a full fledged cocker spaniel.

        • demidaemon

I see. I’ll keep this in mind when we see this hair style again (it will be too soon, no doubt).

  • lexilexi

I just love her face. I was just trying to imagine what she’ll look like at 60… probably a totally adorable 60-year old.

  • I blame the Priscilla Presley infomercials of the early 90’s. (So glamorous!)

  • Sarah

Aw. I think she looks okay, and I don’t HATE the jumpsuit, but in general, I do loathe how jumpsuits give people Super Lengthy Pelvii.

    • zenobar

It’s the Instant Grimley Effect. Just add triangle.

    • Spicytomato1

It doesn’t help that she’s standing right in front of a dark area on the poster, which gives the illusion of a crotch that’s about 6 inches longer than it really is. I had to do a double take on those shots.

      • Sarah

I see what you mean, but I still stand by the general truth that jumpsuits = overlong abdomens

        • Spicytomato1

I don’t disagree. I’d say jumpsuits tend to highlight areas that separates typically don’t, and usually not in a flattering way.

  • Michael

I think she looks 100% amazing, tip-to-tail. Sorry T Lo, gotta call foul on this one.

  • Very intriguing lecture, TLo! I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out, but now I know to look for it.

As someone on Tumblr said the other day, I would love to jump several decades into the future and watch then-contemporary period dramas of life in the early 2000s, to see what they fixate on and what they get wrong.

There seems to be a pretty positive reaction to the jumpsuit among the kittens, though I personally think it’s doing awful things to her waist/pelvis.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

In her case, it does look especially like two roach clips. Maybe they are roach clips. It would explain so much.

  • Imasewsure

That’s a “drinks with the girls” jumpsuit not something for even a casual premier… meh but not yuck.
Death to extensions (but hey extensions are better than boob jobs which is the trend that REALLY won’t die)

  • hughman

No one is ever going to catch the football she is holding.

  • Rhonda Shore

I think she looks most excellent! No probs with the jumpsuit or the hair.

  • From the thumbnail it looked like she had a few tiny braids in the side there – quite a relief that she doesn’t. I am a bit worried – jumpsuits might be wearing me down, because I don’t totally hate this.

  • The hair and the jumpsuit make her look like she’s trying to hide. The jumpsuit doesn’t look bad on her but, as usual, I’m just distracted by it wondering what the bathroom logistics are, not to mention the exposure.

  • Constant Reader

I love that guy in the background of the last photo. In my mind he’s a tourist in town from Boston and he’s saying “Come heah, sweet’aht. My wife Shirley is dyin’ ta meetcha. She loves you almost as much as I love the Red Sox.”

  • Jan Crews

I had a jumpsuit just like that in 1980. Just sayin’.

  • Lori

Both the extensions and jumpsuit are a world of Nope. I’m really bummed that she got sucked in by the jumpsuit. I have irrational affection for her, so I want much better for her than a boring as all hell, floppy-legged, droopy crotch nightmare that makes it look like she has no feet.

  • alyce1213

As jumpsuits go, this is not a felony (but a little too long in the crotch and leg). I like her attitude wearing it, and I like the belt and lite daytime accessorizing.
As to the extensions, I agree, it will be one of the “hairdos we look back at and laugh.”

  • jw_ny

    She’s just so bland.

The jumpsuit…that crotch…it’s a bit high, no? I almost get the impression that she “dresses to the right.” 😉

  • Sophie

At least the jumpsuit is black and not patterned, which would make it worse. I don’t mind it on her.
    Nice necklace.

  • clatie

I respectfully disagree, gentlemen. I LOVE the jumpsuit! Go figure.

  • marlie

JGarner’s face looks great, though. As for the hair, extensions or no, I’d be hella annoyed if my hair were caught under the strap of my top all evening.

  • carrie

The only thing that bothers me is the large chunk of hair UNDER her shoulder strap. It looks like it was secured there purposely. What is happening?

  • elemspbee

Gosh. She looks quite good to me. love that jumpsuit.

  • decormaven

I’m on board with almost everything here- the jumpsuit and the hair- but this would have been the time to bust out a great belt, a necklace with more presence, and a fab mani color. She is a beautiful woman; better attention to detail would get the look WERQ-worthy.

  • stubbornthoughts

Call me crazy, Uncles, but I love everything going on here.

    • Trickytrisha

      I’m on board, as well.

  • Jessica Freeman

I don’t hate the jumpsuit, just the length of the hem and a need for a much better belt. Even I, who knows nothing about hair weaves and extensions caught it right away. That means its pretty dang bad, Jen.

  • MilaXX

I don’t dislike the jumpsuit. In fact, I’d say it’s almost working, but it looks a skoosh too big. The hair hat though……

  • regardless of how they look, all I can think when I see someone wearing a jumpsuit is “that’s gonna be a pain when she has to go to the bathroom.”

    • Sara

What bothers me about her extensions is how she always talks about how natural she is and never blow dries her hair or does anything to it. Clearly she does, just admit it!

    • semirose

Seriously! I tried on a jumpsuit once for some reason (I think I thought it was a dress until I got to the dressing room and then was like eh it’s here) and as I was taking it off the only thing I could think of was what a disaster it would be if I wore this out in public and had to pee. At least as far as this one goes it’s pretty benign.

      • demidaemon

Yet benign on the RC is the kiss of death for a look.

      • My friend accidentally tried on a romper once and only figured it out when she put both legs through one leg hole and couldn’t figure out why it was so tight 🙂

  • Dagney

Love her AND the jumpsuit. You guys are cranky. Also loving that she is serving up some Jacklyn Smith realness on a silver platter. I hate extensions but I’ll forgive her. I don’t want to be on Sidney Bristow’s shit list.

  • msdamselfly

I think she is a lovely woman but this is a boring look. An out of the box hairstyle like dreads, for example. would have livened up this very plain outfit.

  • B_C_J

Pretty woman in a ghastly jumpsuit.

  • Tracey Magyar

I think she looks pretty good. Like the hair, extensions and all. I event like the jumpsuit. Must be a bitch to pee in though.

  • AvaLehra

I think the main problem with jumpsuits is that no matter how well made or expensive they are, they always end up looking cheap.

  • Mauri

I don’t think there is anything wrong with her hair. I have really thick hair with lots of volume that doesn’t look much different from hers. No one has ever said anything about a cocker spaniel. Actually, I get complimented on my hair kind of often.

  • CarrieBaby

Gotta disagree with you guys, like the hair and the jumpsuit. I can’t see much wrong with this, she looks gorgeous. I’ve seen worse extensions on the red carpet

  • Skippymom1

I think she looks fabulous. Hair and jumpsuit. I would’ve like a splashier belt and to see a peek of shoes [shorter hem] but that’s just me. She’s gorgeous. And I don’t see the extensions at all. I’m sure they are there, because you said so, but it looks very pretty to neophyte-me.

  • RuthGo

I actually think she looks really good. I have to admit, I didn’t notice the hair at all (I thought you were going to talk about the color) and I think the jumpsuit is kind of slamming. And she clearly feels really really good in it.

  • Columbinia

    Jumpsuits are always terrible.

  • flamingoNW

She’s one of the few people that actually has the right proportions for a jumpsuit. Don’t mind it. Don’t mind the hair either.

  • MannahattaMamma

OMIGOD she’s JLO’s younger sister. When did that happen? (I blame the extensions and the bangs.)

    • MannahattaMamma

Wait. You know, those might not be extensions. She’s always had hair like that, hasn’t she? I think it’s just a bad blowjob, as it were. Hehhehheh. Sorry. But I think that’s her real hair, which means that she really IS turning into JLO’s sister.

  • Alloy Jane

Love that face, everything else can go. I mean, why would you make a jump suit with grandpa pants? Silly hair, ugly belt, and that thing needs a hemming. Oh well.

  • demidaemon

This look pretty much died on the vine. NO BUENO.

  • CT14

Sorry. I’ll cut back on the coffee now.

  • OffToSeeHim

I think she looks like one of Charlie’s Angels, but kind of in a good way.

  • KES4K

Has she had facial work done? She is my number-one “you look just like” celebrity reference but in these pics we have zero resemblance…

  • Sam Erin

she looks incredible. fresh face, best her hair has looked in a while. LOVE the jumpsuit. and I would kill for those arms.

  • Amel

I consider any jumpsuit that is not uncomfortably tight in the crotch area a success. Except for that cough-syrup-pink one Julia Roberts wore. In other news, Jennifer Garner seems to be channeling a little bit of Julia Roberts in these pics.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I was thinking Hilary Swank myself, but I see what you’re saying.

  • Bozhi

    She looks great.

  • kategs

Well, I get to disagree again. I think she looks great on all levels.

  • suzq

I think she looks good in the jumpsuit and the hair, for what it’s worth. I’m not blessed with much hair and I’d probably be forced to put fake hair in my head if I were a Hollywood denizen.

  • Heather

I don’t have extensions–I just have fairly long and thick hair with a natural wave. My hair falls like that too; there’s a picture on my desk where my hair falls like that. I think my hairline may also be lower so a significant volume of my hair is growing right around and below ear level. So that look doesn’t always mean it’s extensions. The thing that makes the hair look fake is when it’s so much thinner for the last several inches than it is at the neckline or when it’s trapped in clothes or a shoulder strap and they don’t seem to notice. Real hair hurts or is at least annoying when it gets trapped.

  • crash1212

In this case, I’m really glad I’m not a trained specialist on hair/fashion critique, because I think she looks fabulous. Her hair looks really beautiful and I think if you have to try as hard as you’ve described to figure out they’re extensions…well, let’s just say I’m not sure it’s that big a deal. As for the jumpsuit, I usually hate them, but I think this one is really cute and fits perfectly – even with the shoe eating hem. Party on Jen – you look beautiful.

  • I have to disagree. I have thin, fine hair that breaks when it gets past my shoulders, and the only thing that works is to use extensions to fill out and provide length. (I have a healthy scalp and a good candidate for extensions). I’ve been through bobs, rachels, layered, short, permed – every god damn hair do you see in makeovers all over cable TV, and nothing looks as good as bangs and long hair on me. And that look doesn’t happen without extensions. My current style is exactly the one Jen sports above. I don’t always wave it like that. It’s usually straight – it works for me. I hope this doesn’t go out of style. My extensions have given me self confidence and make me feel beautiful. Also, I think Jennifer looks fabulous from head to toe.

  • Haven’t liked these jumpsuit thingies since PR season 9!

  • Sam Smith

Jennifer Garner is one of my favorites, I’ve convinced myself that she is as normal and sweet and kind as she comes off as (which is probably not true). I am a fan of her type of beauty, which is tough gal beauty but I don’t like anything about this look.

  • Tom & Lorenzo bottom feeders

She looks beautiful & unless you bottom feeders personally inspected her hair I don’t understand your attempt to publicly shame a beautiful talented woman for something you don’t even know to be factually true. Grow up. Learn some journalistic professionalism.
