January Jones in Roksanda Ilincic at the Mad Men Season 7 LA Premiere

Posted on April 03, 2014

We are working so hard to like this, you guys. And we’re really not sure why.

January Jones attends the season 7 premiere of “Mad Men” at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood, California in a Roksanda Ilincic black and blue dress paired with Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ sandals.

Roksanda Ilincic Fall 2014 Collection

Is it because it’s unexpected? That it works a much softer look than we’re used to seeing from her? Maybe, but the problem is, we haven’t yet convinced ourselves. All the elements are there, but we’re not sure the overall look works. We do like that dress, though; bold and graphically interesting with just the right amount of frippery to take it in an unexpected direction. But as much as we appreciate that flounce on the skirt, it’s too big and too long. In fact, we wish the hem was higher and that she wasn’t wearing naked shoes. Also: the belt. That’s gotta go. Looks cool on the runway but painful on her.

As for the Ellie Mae hair, we actually dig it a little, but we don’t think it goes with this dress at all. And the eyeshadow looks like she licked a piece of candy from her Easter basket and used it as play makeup.

C’mon. You did that as a kid, even if it wasn’t Easter candy. Admit it.

What is with all the bad hair lately?

      • http://wikeslongtrail.blogspot.com/ latenac

Seriously. This is how my 10 years old’s hair looks in the morning after she’s been sleeping with a braid in all night. I could post pictures and you’d think she was January’s younger twin.

      • demidaemon

NO SHIT. There must be some sort of hair stylist mass hysteria or something.

      • ScarlettHarlot

Seriously, I feel like a broken record with all my “love the dress, hate the hair” reactions lately.

    • RussellH88

She looks like Heather Morris a bit, no?

I really like the dress on the model, but for some reason I don’t think it works with January. The hair is awful too.

      • Aurora Leigh

There is something about her face that does not look like her face. Can’t put my finger on it, though. And egads, that hair.

        • RussellH88

I think it’s the smile, and I’m not saying that to be mean. Usually she has this Stone Cold Carter Bitch Face, but when she smiles it’s like she’s a different person.

          • Aurora Leigh

Yes, I think you’re right. And as someone who also has Resting Bitch Face, I consider January Jones to be one of my spirit animals.

            • AthenaJ

Same here, the other day I was told by a total stranger at work that I am always walking around with a ‘mean look’ on my face. Personally I think being mean is insulting someone about how their face looks, but what do I know?

ETA: I do like January smiling in these pics though, but it’s because she’s got a real smile… it looks something made her happy or laugh and that’s why she’s smiling. I always believe in smiling for a REASON and not just because women are always expected to plaster a happy look on their face at all times.

            • Aurora Leigh

Could not agree more! I don’t know why some folks think it’s their prerogative to go around telling strangers how their faces should look.

    • @Biting Panda

Girl, that is not your aura.

    • Tracy M

The rest of it may be forgivable, but the twisty-tie on the end of the braid just gets me. It’s like a little “F*ck you!” punctuation mark.

      • Ginger

Can we talk about the super-frizzy ends below the twisty-tie? JJ, there are deep conditioning treatments for that shit. Find it. Get a trim. You can afford it!

        • marlie

That’s not even her own hair. They should have gotten better quality extensions.

          • demidaemon

You can so see it. It’s like a braid extension. NOT GOOD.

        • Chickadeep

That braid is a Pinterest Fail.

      • Vanessa Reyes

What’s with the darker hair piece in the braid?? Is that an extension to make the braid fuller or is that actually her hair??

        • onefifteen

I doubt it’s her hair. Her hair is like mine – the texture is fine. Most braids on us look like ratty little pieces of twine unless we have some extra hair to fill it out a bit.

    • Evan

      Superhero Heidi

      • leahpapa

Heidi, Warrior Princess. (Which is a compliment; despite my quibbles with the incoherence of the look, I applaud her doing something unexpected, bold, and semi-whimsical.)

    • Scimommy

I’m not sure what I’m looking at but it’s not working for me.

      • kirkyo

I think this would look great without the flounce. Easy and sporty.

      • sojourneryouth

That’s it. This is WTF in dress form!

      • Mousentrude

Dress is great but I think it’s too dark for her. Her head pales into the background.

    • Tricia Rose

I found this to be very refreshing for her! Maybe I am trying hard, but the blue made her eyes pop and look at the joy! She seems happier than I’ve seen her on a pole dance and I think this look helps that. Her face is totally different when she isn’t giving “bitch face” all the time!

      • CakesOnAPlane

Yes! We’re working to hard to like it because she looks delighted to be wearing it!

Also, I kind of love the crazy eye makeup *runs and hides*.

        • Denise Alden

I adore J Jo beyond reason, and also love the eye makeup. I just wish the dress were much, much shorter. I go back and forth on the hair.

      • porcupie

I know her Instagram is probably all carefully calculated by a PR person etc. etc. but she really does come across as funny and lovely on it. She seems kind of goofy on it as well (although obviously still insanely beautiful), so now I too am trying hard to love this look.

        • charlotte

I feel sorry for her because so many people think she is Betty. She was lovely when she did that THR roundtable thing last year-ish.

    • http://anibundel.com/ anibundel

      I don’t know why either! It’s eyescalding.

    • MilaXX

It’s a FMO dress. In orde to work on her she needs to shorten that draping on the side and swap out the belt for one proportioned to her petite frame. I’m not in love with the hair, but it’s too much with an already overwhelming outfit.

      • CPK1

Agreed. Way too much for her petiteness. I like the dress but hate the hair with it.

    • Daisy Walker

      No. Just…no.

    • Mary Carpenter

That belt looks like something from The Day the Earth Stood Still.

    • decormaven

The elements in the print of the dress fight the belt for attention. The shoes need to be stronger in design- I’m starting to shudder when I see “Nudist” in the shoe credits. Also, that’s got to be a faux braid; the colors in it don’t match the natural hair. But on the bright side, she looks happy, and I’m counting the moments to S7. LOVE the promo with “The Man Who Sold the World.”

      • Anne At Large

I was actually thinking that, while I don’t love the braid with this look, I love how it shows off all the different colors in her hair. I think the darker colors are just her natural unbleached hair color from lower on her head. But I may be biased because that’s what my hair does. And the promos -EXCELLENT Bowie deployment.

        • decormaven

I need to look at current photos of her; has her hair grown enough to be styled so? I quibbled a little bit about “The Man Who Sold the World,” since it wasn’t released until 1970, but the song is so appropriate for Mad Men -and any Bowie is a Very Good Thing.

          • marlie

Just click on the January Jones tag and look at pictures from her from a week or two ago. Her hair is MUCH shorter.

            • decormaven

Thanks- I didn’t remember it as being long enough to style in this manner.

            • Anne At Large

Aha, I am not as up on her haircut then. Weird choice for extension deployment, I guess but I am still biased in favor of the color variation. It makes me want to bust out the Sun-In.

    • GillianHolroyd

bwwahahahaha. Is it still April 1st?

      • demidaemon

        I wish. :(

    • golden_years

I think she looks great. The hair and belt giver her a warrior princess look. And I love that eye makeup.

    • NMMagpie

I think it’s the Heidi hair.

I honestly did not recognize her at first; she does not smile that often.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The blue & gold eyemakeup plus that hair are really bad. On the other hand, she’s left her bitchface at home and she’s so pretty when she is smiley that I am generally going to be in favour.

      • kimmeister

I might be able to live with the blue eye makeup, since it’s a flattering color on her, but that gold/coppery shade is not working for skin tone at all.

    • eringorock

I actually LOVE the makeup, hair is just ok. Dress needs to be shortened, and remove that belt!
Per her instagram, she was going for a “dragon-slaying mom”…….. yup.

      • MilaXX

So thus us her version of Khaleesi drag?

      • CupcakeTrudy

Well now I’m on board! “Dragon-slaying mom” is just too ridiculous and adventurous to resist!

    • Anna

Like the dress on the model, hate the Jen Aniston sandals, hate the powerlifting belt, REALLY HATE the hair.

Nice to see her smile though.

      • ballerinawithagun

Thank you! Now I don’t have to formulate any thoughts.
I think the dress would have been great without the belt and the drape is just a little too long in the front. What is up with that odd peach block?

        • Anna

Huh, had to scroll up to see this odd peach block you were referring to. Yeah, that’s totally random. And the length/volume is too overwhelming on her.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Oh yes! I didn’t see that either. Why would you do that?

        • demidaemon

WHAT? Now I have a whole new reason to hate this dress and designer.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Yeah, I don’t think she’s giving the right posture/face for the belt (though I love the face she’s giving; it’s the belt that has to go).

        • Anna

I could accept the belt if she was competing in the 2014 Crossfit Games. Really doesn’t work with this dress.

      • demidaemon

That hair. I can’t. And I will not stop repeating this until everyone hears me.

    • Catsss

Ouch! the corners of the belt are digging in to her stomach. I like the dress but the belt looks painful and is perhaps to small (and the wrong color?)

    • Bozhi

That belt thing looks like she is going into battle or something and that braid is so fake it’s disgusting.

    • KendraMR

The end of her ponytail is making my eye twitch. It looks like it belongs as the tail of a My Little Pony toy.

    • MartyBellerMask

Nope, I never did that. I ate every bit of every piece. But then, I was a fat kid.

      • Aroo

Me too. I would eat all of my chocolate and then look mournfully at my sisters’ stash like I was a Labrador.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

My sister would get up early and take stuff out of our baskets and put it in HERS. Her excuse was that the Easter Bunny liked her better. Cretin.

    • ojosazules

The dress is a droopy eyesore, and the belt is ridiculous. The braid looks like she stole it off a doll at a thrift store.

    • crash1212

Only thing working for me is her head – even with the Easter candy makeup. The dress is awful, made worse by the painful looking belt. And those shoes – while I hate them on principle, they are much to bare for this ugly dress.

    • Jessica Freeman

The belt kills what was a dress that could have worked….but barely. It’s nice to see her smile.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

What is giving me eye twitches deluxe is the deliberate way that the arm holes are cut so that only one of them hits the shoulder point. Its so obvious in the model shot. At first I thought it was simply that it was too tight on January, but its much more than that. I really can’t sign off on this one.

      • Kitten Mittons

That’s really bizarre. And there’s no reason for it.

I also think I spy a peach/pink panel in the back? Why??

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

As if this dress needed any MORE elements.

      • MilaXX

You’re right, the sleeves look like the one on the left is slightly longer than the right and OMG I see the peach panel in the back. No bueno

    • GregoireNYC

Honey, you missed the Catniss Everdeen auditions by a few years.

    • Stacey Summerville

I am indifferent to this look, but can I just say that January Jones is my new favorite person to follow on Instagram?! She does #tbt posts of Betty and Don and seems to be very funny and sarcastic.

    • MsKitty

Oh my. She’s smiling so there’s that at least.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

I think you are trying so hard since TLo is very very anti pinterest hair :) you are trying to like it because she is not giving bitchface, she is smiling.

    • elemspbee

This dress has potential but it’s trying too hard. the skirt fippery is not working because it’s too bulky and the hem asymmetry is where it all falls apart for me.

And is the top too tight on her; it’s pulling on her left side.

    • Cyprienne Zed

I want so badly for her to succeed…. tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak.

    • CupcakeTrudy

So much happening here! All the elements could probably be cute on their own. Even the messy braid and that comically large belt, the two most clashing elements. Her eye make up is crazy, but it plays up her pretty eyes and complexion in a fun, unexpected way. But, It’s just too much all together.

    • numenah

At first I thought this was that Kate person with all the kids. Nothing about this stupidly asymmetrical dress makes sense, let alone flatters. And Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, take care of those roots, woman!

    • Janet B

      Nice to see her smile.

    • lrober03

The concept of a gold belt with that dress is nice, but not the execution. Too complicated

    • kt

the flounce can go, the belt is awesome but looks weird bc she is tipping in her shoes and arching back to compensate. Also, she’s smiling. I mean, if ever that were an in.

    • Stella Zawistowski

This looks like a Project Runway garment on which Nina Garcia would have made some elegantly cutting comment about editing.

    • Tlazolteotl

I still do that with the Easter candy. I buy my kids the Robin’s Eggs every year for the blue chalky lipstick.

    • Laura Abrahamsen

Meh for dress and hair, but her face looks more warm, open and friendly than I’ve ever seen her and it’s just lovely.

    • Danielle

You know what, I was on board until that long drape on her hip. Remove it and I dig her Queen Elsa realness.

    • paginatrix

We used to lick the red M&Ms and rub them on our lips for lipstick.

    • butterflysunita

Frankendress and the braid only makes it worse.

    • MW

Jessica Chastain had her photoshoot as Miranda, this is January signalling she wants to be Elsa for a day.

Way too much skirt and ugly shoes but somehow she looks pretty.

    • PeaceBang

I was all about the hair until I saw the horrid two-tone thing going on. Her posture is slumpy and it looks like her waist magnetically attracted a big gold bouillon bar. But you know what I like so much? The nice smile.

    • Noah

It’s like a rejected costume from The Hunger Games.

    • sagecreek

Honestly, only the last picture is even recognizable as her. What’s going on there?

    • lunchcoma

I think it looks great. I wouldn’t pair that hair with that dress, either, but I enjoy this look on her.

    • unbornfawn

The dress is busy and over designed. The hair might be cute with a more casual look.

    • Ann VerWiebe

It looks like she’s leading the drum corps. All she needs is a hat and a flag.

    • jonnyf8

I was thinking the hair was very Sister-Wife. Is she up for some part that we don’t know about?

    • suzq

Not fond of the dress at all. Not even on the model. Her hair belongs on another dress altogether. I would have liked to see her in the pants with the belt, and the bodice done as a top with sleeker hair.

    • msdamselfly

DOnt know why, with her figure and in this season ,she would wear such a bulky dress. Her hair looks cute though

    • heartbot

I love the hair, and I even think the make-up looks fun. Just wish there was less to the dress. IDK. She looks relaxed and happy, instead of just giving bitchface, so maybe that’s why you want so much to like it? I know I do.

    • Paula Pertile

That dress is awful. What is that fabric? Its like bad tablecloths at a trade show. And is it flesh colored in the back?
      I’m obviously cranky today.

    • SierraDelta

Kiernan had more sense than to wear something like this.

    • Kelly

Fake braid looks fake, the top of the dress pulls, the belt looks like something purchased at Muhammad Aii’s yard sale. And is the back of the dress inexplicably peach-colored? Oddly enough, though, she looks kinda cute.

    • alyce1213

I think you’re trying to like this because she’s smiling sweetly, no bitchface. That would be the only reason I see.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

It’s got a weird, Betty-Draper-of-the-future vibe to it. I feel like without that particular belt and the wonky hem it would be workable. The hair, on the other hand, is unacceptable.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

omg. I totally did the Easter candy make-up thing – purple jelly beans for shadow and red for lips.
This is one of those dresses that I like the idea of it more than the actual dress itself. And boy howdy is she unrecognizable when she’s smiling rather than pulling a bitch face.

    • mcbishop

I have to like this if only because January Jones looks authentically happy.

    • Shawn EH

      Cray-cray. Prefer epic bitch face.

    • Kent Roby

The belt really fights with the asymmetry of the cut and pattern of the dress; losing it (as long as the waist is fitting close enough) would help. And the hair is just terrible.

    • CO Gal

Kudos for trying something different, but the hemline and the belt make this so unflattering on a woman with a perfect body. Looks like she’s wearing some weird seatbelt with a ginormous buckle.

    • Eve Farren Farber

Hate the entire outfit, but doesn’t she look just like Daryl Hannah?

    • KT

Mmmmmmm no. I like the dress on the model, but it’s swallowing her up, and frankly, it doesn’t really suit her. Nice attempt though.

Hair and makeup are ridiculous – she just looks wacky. And that big smile is jarring… needs more bitch face.

    • cmb123

the youthfulness of her face and hair are making me smile today.

    • webslice33

she looks so likeable in that dress and hair & makeup..

    • marlie

It’s an interesting dress, but it’s too much dress for JJ. I like her eye makeup, but I really, really, REALLY hate the sloppily attached braid (made of hair a different color from her own).

    • cocohall

This is the sort of outfit that happens when you spike your morning coffee with tequila. Sweet Jesus this is awful. Everything on her from dress, shoes, belt, hair, makeup is fighting with the rest of her. But she looks pleased as punch. I would love to be on the carpet and hear her co-stars stumble about trying to find the right adjective to describe her appearance: January, you look so, so , so . . . . . awake? bold? ready for rehab?

      • demidaemon

I completely and utterly agree with you. JJ needs some sort of style intervention, stat. Perhaps taking that coffee away is the first step.

    • MannahattaMamma

January Jones, a beautiful woman currently styled by the House of Random.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      “Wilton Parmenter!!!”

    • demidaemon

I can’t with that hair. It brings down the whole look.

    • Lily

Was this a leftover costume idea from the Hunger Games?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I think she should play around with softer looks, just for the variety of it. This doesn’t quite work, but I’m not mad about it.

    • Anplica Fiore

      No No No!

    • Zeee

This is all bad. From the top of her head to the tip of her toes. Ick. A big black and blue ick.

    • 1carmelita

      Love the little ear-cuff.

    • schadenfreudelicious

I just cant with the Alpine Heidi hair….

    • colleenjanel

Oh GAWD no. Quick uncles … give us some Kiernan as a palate cleanser!!

    • Kim Elmore

      someone hates her

    • The Versatile Chef

The blue eye-liner is giving me life.

      /Throwback Thursday.

    • Virginia McMurdo

It kinda looks Katniss Everdeen-y all around to me.

    • LKNisi

I like the hair! Wish the outfit went along with it though.

    • Judy_J

I’m getting a Kiernan Shipka vibe from these photos, like she’s trying to look less like Sally’s mom and more like Sally’s older sister.

    • kayleymaybe

I can tell I’m the mom of a toddler because I looked at her and thought, “Elsa.” (The blue, the braid…)

    • appliquer

I like how happy she looks!

    • Morales Mike

She looks much better with a hard edge – I for one loved her 80’s rocker look in England a few days back. This “soft” look isn’t believable on her at all, we all know she’s hardcore. And the hair, god no.

    • lalahartma

      Ugh.

    • Muhlyssa

This is horrible. What’s with the way she’s standing? Is she pregnant?

    • ThaliaMenninger

The hair makes her look young, which isn’t a bad thing, but it doesn’t go with the dress. And the dress… Urgh. The top is okay, but that weird bottom half is SO not working for me. I don’t like the flappity flap and I hate that belt with it.

    • Danielle West

I like my January Jones served up with some bitchface. The smile, braid, and weird makeup are throwing me.

    • Sarah Winningham

It doesn’t really work, but I like it because it reminds me of Ann Miller’s costumes in Kiss Me Kate.

    • megohd

Because she looks so happy. That’s why I love it.

    • ScarlettHarlot

      She’s smiling, at least :)

    • Lilak

What an evil combo …Too much plain ‘n’ heavy skirt fabric going on for her (and too long as well) + too tight in the chest.
Then there’s the ridiculous hair … The style that doesn’t suit the dress + the peculiar assortment of colors (and the dark part is staring at me like a Cyclops eye).

    • lundibleu

I like the dress and the hair, though not necessarily together. Cannot deal with the eye makeup though – too heavy. That belt too, it looks painful and wonky.

    • FridaStaire

      Scary Heidi!

    • Call me Bee

What…? She looks a bit like Franka What’sherface from Run Lola Run. Cute dress. Bad hair. Weirdly not looking like herself.

    • JynxTheCat

teacher. Parent teacher conference with a big fancy belt.

    • E. D.

I hate the hem, but don’t mind the hair. Probably because I wish mine was long enough to put into a decent braid.

    • KayEmWhy

Hate the entire look from the Eli Mae hair to the Wonder Woman belt. That matchy eye makeup WTF? NO!

    • somebody blonde

The braid is scary. Why does she have brown hair in her braid? Why?

    • Gatto Nero

“All the elements are there, …”
The trouble is that every possible element is there: color blocking, uneven hem, big metal belt, Heidi hair.
      Yikes.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Aside from the general hideousness of everything, the belt is either making her stand funny or look like she’s standing funny.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

She’s shitting us, right? This is a big fuck you to everyone who’s ever told her she’s a bitch, right?

    • roche

“Lost in Space” dress with “Petticoat Junction” hair. Weird but interesting. The dress is a little clunky, but her smile is lovely.

    • kategs

She looks wonderful, the dress does not.

    • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

Kind of loving the dress and belt, and I like the softer, pretty makeup and hair, but I really dislike the sloppy braid.

    • Fuchsiaforever

      Is she messing with us?

    • mjmiller77

I like her hair – it’s soft and touchable. Not all pulled back severe or sprayed to a lacquer finished pile. And the soft makeup makes her look younger. But the dress, no. It’s got too much going on, that don’t work together.

    • Thom

Let’s bring back an oldie but a goodie…

      “JESUS CHRIST, JANUARY JONES!”

I loved the eyeliner and the bodice of the dress, but that skirt is pulling too much focus. Chop it off just below the knees, and keep the hem symmetrical?

I’d like the hairstyle, but if it didn’t look so chunky. Maybe a fishtail braid? Or a neater braid, where her hair didn’t stick out in odd places?

If she got rid of that belt buckle but left the gray belt, then got rid of a bunch of that heavy skirt, I think this would work! But as soon as I saw that eyeliner I felt like the look had sort of a light sprinkle of “Hunger Games costume” to it. Maybe the braid Inceptioned me.

At first I thought I was looking at Kristen Wiig. Seriously. So, okay…I really like the bodice.

That belt is an ABOMINATION. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything so horrid. It’s like a pregnancy bumper. Wow.

Two stars on the same show wearing the exact same shoes to a premiere of said show = enough with those shoes.

    • Cassidy Olsen

Everyone needs to follow her on instagram, it made me go from thinking she was an ice queen to LOVING her. This look is meh. The belt was better on Blanchett but the dress is interesting.

The dress looks good on her but not the hair.
