Idina Menzel in Hervé Léger at “If/Then” Broadway Opening Night

Posted on April 01, 2014

Sweetie, no. It’s not too late to have these pics relabeled “Adele Dazeem,” so that no one associates this look with the real you.

Oh, HONEY. This just screams “TRY TOO HARD.” We know you’re on the market at the moment and coming off a pretty great time in your career, but the shoes, the dress, the hair, the earrings – it’s all just way too “Look at me, you guys. LOOK AT ME.”

If you must keep the dress (which we don’t recommend because you look like you can’t breathe in it), then ditch those shoes, because they clash terribly. And for god’s sake, lose the Marge Simpson hair. It’s not doing you a bit of good. But really, hon. Think about ditching the dress. You don’t necessarily have to tone your look down so much as find a better way of expressing it. This looks forced. And kind uncomfortable.

This is really bad you guys.

It looks like the hair is too tight and it’s pulling her face.

    • Gayer Than Thou

I have come to the conclusion that I never like Herve Leger. The designs, that is. I’ve never met the person.

  • dickylarue

Even after all these years Adele’s hair and eyebrows are defying gravity.

    • random_poster

Bravo for making me laugh out loud!

  • lunchcoma

Everything about that looks like it hurts, and it shows in her expression.

  • PastryGoddess

This is Lea Michele level Try Harding. That hair. Mercy

    • Victor Beiramar Diniz

I was going to type that this is Lea Michele’s future self… (that was some serious good casting on glee, having her play LM’s mother)

      • demidaemon

        Read my frickin mind.

    • kimmeister

Yes, it’s like she got face-giving lessons from LM.

    • suzq

      Try Harding? Tonya Harding???? Yikes!

  • Jessica

I actually think she pulls off the dress pretty well, but it would be so much better paired with basic black pumps and literally any other hairstyle than that.

    • Audrey

I really doubt that she could pull it off. Literally.

  • Evan

    She’s giving crazy eyes too.

    • suzq

It’s the dress. I used to think that Ramona Singer (Real Housewives of NY) had crazy eyes. She wears a lot of Herve Leger. I’m beginning to think it’s the dress’s eye-popping python hug.

  • AC Simons

Oh those shoes! Makes her look a) stumpy, b) cankled, and c) in terrible pain.

  • BForte

Question from the uninformed/something I always wonder when viewing similar opening night photos: when/where is this red carpet taking place? Is this a post-show party after the performance?

    • Ron Zank

Yes, typically the producers throw an opening night party and everyone waits around for the reviews come out.

      • BForte

  • jw_ny

I blame Lea Michelle, Jennifer Lopez, Teresa Giudice, Mariah Carey, etc….

    • Melvis Velour

There’s a very special place in fashion hell for Teresa Giudice

  • uprightcitizen

I luv huh. But the combination of that skirt length with the gladiator straps on her shoes is giving her the stumpiest legs ever. And bandage dresses of this type should not be worn by anyone other than hookers and Kelly Bundy. Agree about the hair, too. It looks like it’s waiting for its tiara. But man has she got some beautiful shoulders and clavicles, eh?

    • Laura Renee

I applaud her posture, at any rate!

      • uprightcitizen

Real Broadway divas pretty much always have great posture, right? Something about how the diaphragm works in concert with the rib cage or some such. I saw Menzel in the original cast of Rent, first row, in 1995. In a show where everyone was a powerful singer, she still stood out.

        • MilaXX

I saw her in Wicked along with Cheno but alas, I had cheap seats. Even then I was blown away by her voice.

        • alyce1213

Yes, they do, it is a technical thing for those who sing, but it’s also Stage Presence. I kinda wish she’d lift her chin a scooch and relax her smile for photos.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, when I first saw the photo before the scroll down, I thought Wow! because those shoulders should be shown!

  • DeniseSchipani

KIND OF uncomfortable? Good god, just looking at it all — the hair, the dress, the shoes — I can’t breathe and want to cry with empathetic pain.

  • FrigidDiva

And that was the last time we ever saw her as they carried her frozen form off the red carpet.

    • PeaceBang

You said “Frozen.” I see what you did there.

  • Anna

Oh Adele, you’ve should’ve let this dress go. Turned away and slammed the door.

  • @Biting Panda

    Single and desperate to mingle.

    • Gayer Than Thou

I see you’ve read my profile on that dating site…

  • BlairBear

Who doesn’t want a dress that give you the appearance of arm fat, flattens your breasts, and makes you look thick waisted. Also cheap and shiny looking and terrible dated color. Also I am so tired of this hairstyle

  • Danielle

Taye Diggs would have never allowed this nonsense on his watch.

  • Jacob Bowen

Idina, your expression does NOT do you any favors here…and those shoes are hiddy.

    • Sarah

Right? She looks Extremely Alarmed. She must’ve just seen her feet for the first time.

      • demidaemon

I think that’s the expression of “NEED OXYGEN STAT.”

  • hughman

Fran Drescher and the Angry Inch.

  • Judy_J

The shoes, while hideous, appear to fit properly, which is a plus in my book.

  • jilly_d

I don’t know guys, I usually hate bandage dresses as a rule, but I’m not mad at this one. It could have been saved with a loose low curly pony and a pair or simple black pumps.

    • Imasewsure

I agree… the dress is awful mostly because of association with the curious hair and ugly shoes. On it’s own, it’s just a little tight… no big whoop

      • demidaemon

I love that you are calling this hair “curious.” Which it is, of course, but certainly not the first adjective that springs to my mind.

  • kt

Or just put down your arm because the inadvertent chicken-wing effect is killing me

  • Violina23

I kinda liked it from the front, but it looks painful from the side. But I’ll admit, I’m a fan girl (since her RENT days) so I’ll forgive almost anything. I squeed when they played her version of “Let it Go” on the radio instead of the Demi Lovato version

    • Imasewsure

Demi Lovato has a version? What fresh hell is this?!? Ugh

      • Violina23

Yep… clearly you don’t have a preschooler who wants to listen to nothing but the Frozen soundtrack in the car :-)

It’s not HORRIBLE but I hate when pop singers interpret ballads as singing like they are constantly in pain…

        • Imasewsure

My condolences… I lived through a string of Barney records with my boys at that age but somehow that seems less painful. I also get the chance to still crank the radio and enjoy it when the gorgeous Adele Dazeem is singing the song so that is something too

  • B_C_J

The dress is not for the meek nor the faint of heart. It requires the acceptance of the fact that you will be aware every moment that you are wearing it. That said, she’s rocking the dress. Her figure is enviable. The color is delicious. The problem lies primarily with the hair. It belongs to a teen beauty pageant contestant not to a broadway superstar. The heels need replaced as well with something that does not travel up the leg.

    • Dagney

Yeah, agree. I think we are in the minority here. I think she looks gorgeous, though I don’t love the shoes. But, I do like the hair.

    • Dagney

Just looked at this again. I think the shoes killed it, and not in a “killa” way. I usually hate this hemline, but I think a sleeker, pointed shoe would have polished the overall effect.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Isn’t she Lea Michele’s birth mother on Glee? Of course.

  • decormaven

Too tight hair. Too tight dress. Too tightly laced shoes. Great form- just needs to be dressed in a bit more relaxed, yet elegant, style. The color of the dress is beautiful on her, though.

  • Richard Harper

I don’t really hate the dress that much, but it doesn’t fit which is the really painful part. The hair is atrocious and the shoes look cheap — which I’m quite sure they are not.

  • twocee

Weird. In the thumbnail I swear I thought she was Lea Michelle.

  • amanda lynn

Is it just me – or should she stay away from the color GREEN for a few more years? (that hair is tragic)

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Wow. This is epic bad. If only she hadn’t gone with that hairdo maybe it wouldn’t have been so horrible.

  • SewingSiren

Not that bad. Kind of cute really. It seems like a sexy version of the wicked witch.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She should have Let it Go.

  • V No Privacy

Does a bandage dress ever NOT look try-hard? (see, e.g., Britney)

  • Myrlin

    Counselor Deanna Troi.

  • lobsterlen

She is going end up with circulation problems Everything on her looks too tight and constricting … the hair, dress and shoes.

  • Miss Ruth

    Of Course, Senior.

  • TAGinMO

“Honey… What is this? What’s going on? What’s happening?”

  • boweryboy

It’s a DO ME look all the way.

    • demidaemon

But how are you going to do her when that dress is not going to move an inch?

  • RohanMBN

I can’t be the only one who started singing “Let it Go” upon the sight of her hair. I just can’t.

  • MinAgain

I like the dress. I like the shoes. I will have nightmares about the hair…the tribble that ate Idina Menzel’s head.

  • Lori

If the dress fit her and didn’t look like it was squeezing her half to death and she had worn better shoes and done something less awful with her hair I think this could have worked for her. As it is, this is bad.

  • MilaXX

Why is she dressed like a Housewife? Isn’t she a little late to start wearing post break up clothes? Oh Idina, do better girl.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

You’re right about the dress-it does scream Real Housewives of someplace, and Idina can most definitely do better. There have got to be some gays in her circle who can steer her toward a better look.

  • Imasewsure

On the other hand, she does look like Leah Michelle’s mother in this…. Run Adele run (maybe the heels will break on those awful shoes and you can throw them away).
    Still… love huh!!

    • livesarah

Oh you called it before I did. She really does look like Lea Michele here. The facial resemblance is not unfortunate, they are both beautiful women. But she really ought to refrain from dressing in that same, almost desperate, style…

  • Sunraya

I die! Adele! I forgot what he called her, and I knew you would remind us!

Adele doesn’t look too great in this!

  • CPK1

wow, she is all trussed up like a turkey

  • Boop

I thought bandaid dresses were so 2008. Also – SHE BROKE UP WITH HER HUSBAND? Where have I been?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

She and Taye Diggs announced their separation a few months ago-and note they separated rather than “consciously uncouple”. I still have a mild sad that they separated.

      • Boop

I am so bummed. I remember seeing a YouTube video of them singing a song for a fan. They did it off an iPhone when they were in an airport, and the way they were so in synch and tried to do it so discreetly made me love them. Ugh. Love isn’t real.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Plus their son is adorable. As I said, a mild sad.

  • formerlyAnon

The dress looks more like a medical therapy than a garment. Her feet & ankles look a lot like mine would in those shoes, and honestly, Ms. Menzel – there comes a time in the life of our skin when licorice whip ties just aren’t the right look. And that time comes early to the pale-skinned.

  • marlie

She doesn’t have to ditch the dress altogether; she just needs to go up a size. But the hair and shoes are tacky.

  • Qitkat

Adele Dazeem is obviously jealous of Chloe’s altars; she is starting her own Pinterest board.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

the dress-meh. Now, the hair I really don’t get;if she had done a more polished updo.

  • Therese Bohn

I really loathe bandage dresses. Even the color doesn’t help, but at least it’s not beige.

  • Kathleen

It seems she’s taking fashion advice from her fictional daughter’s real life choices… Back away from the Lea Michele dress!

  • Sarah Jane

I just want to grab the shoulders of the dress and yank it up. It looks like the dress was too small and that’s as far up as she could get it.

  • crash1212

Here’s what. Let’s take all the “bandage” dresses in the known universe put them in a big old pile and set fire to them! OK? Then torch everything else she has on – well maybe don’t torch the hair, but certainly let it down – and let’s start over.

  • butterflysunita

Huh. Except for the hair (which reminds me of Pebbles Flintstone), I think she looks great. Dress is a beautiful color and flatters her figure.

    • Synnamin

I’m with you. She looks great. Fits her well, love the shoes and the earrings. I don’t get “desperate” at all.

  • livesarah

    She looks like Lea Michele…

  • elemspbee

    so lea michelle

  • Dan_In_NYC

It’s a beautiful neckline for her. That’s all I got.

  • sleah_in_norcal

keep the shoes, but the hair is ridiculous. love the dress color, but ease up a bit. relax, girl.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love the look (hair aside), but then again, I’m not really one for “subtle”- I will always take a J-Lo over a Taylor Swift. I would dropkick her down a flight of stairs for those shoes too.

  • quiltrx

    She looks really alarmed.
Definitely try-too-hard, as if she’s about to scream at us “NO I DO NOT MISS TAYE AT ALL!”

  • demidaemon

So scary. I fear this is what Lea Michele will look like in twentyish years.

    That hair. I can’t.

  • FridaStaire

Oh honey. We love you, period. Loosen up.

  • Lilyana_F

Damn, I was about to “of course” this…

  • Bernadette

    Dear-in-headlights expression, much?

  • TheOkeyDoke

She certainly looks alert — like that topknot is yanking her eyes open.

  • Constant Reader

Herve Leger: official dressmaker to the freshly single. Love the color on her, though.

  • yllas

I’m interested to note the naked legs and feet of The Stars look every bit as awful without nylons as do my own! Now I don’t feel so bad! I’m “IN”!!!!!

  • Bradio311

I think she looks pretty hot, but I can’t with the J Lo hair. Of course I snorted with laughter at T Lo’s take on the whole thing though!

  • MaryMitch

I think she looks great, except for the shoes.

  • cocohall

There must be a universe where tight bandage dresses are considered beautiful. How else to explain their perpetual deployment? Or, for some women, is it some sort of fashion/body goal to be able to wear one? Whatever the case, just because you can, Idina, does not mean you should. She has a singular beauty and this does nothing to showcase it – it just makes her look like a generic Housewife hopeful heading into a casting call.

  • TAKippy

Those shoes almost reach Lea Michele levels of “Of course.”

  • PeaceBang

Was she in the show? If so, then I think she looks fantastic.

  • amaranth16

    On the market?!?! They separated?!!?

  • J. Preposterice

I really want someone to turn up with actual marge simpson hair, now. Just like, can someone bust out a big blue beehive on the red carpet for me? that’d be the best thing.

  • Michelle Gennari

Uhm. Not liking the hair. And the whole look is a little “Brooklyn” to me.
