Holland Roden in Erin Fetherston at ELLE’s 2014 Women in Music Concert Celebration

Posted on April 23, 2014

After a few minutes, we realized we were struggling to like this look.

We think Erin Fetherstone makes a lot of cute stuff. And she’s perfectly suited to someone like Holland. But this just looks like warmed over Dolce & Gabbana to us. It just doesn’t feel very fresh to us. That’s a beautiful fabric, but we think making a twee little dress out of it isn’t all that interesting a way to go with it. And besides, there seems to be some fit issues. The sleeves are a bit big on her and the skirt’s waist appears to be nowhere near hers. Also: once again, not the time for naked shoes, starlet. And the Wilma Flintstone hair bugs.

Wow! It’s like we got progressively crankier as we typed this one up! We better stop now before we wind up yelling and cursing.

It’s notable that it takes the model’s adorable little acting pose to make the dress sing. Poor Roden has to just sit there.

      • Rhonda Shore

The model is doing reheated Twiggy…i actually think Holland looks kinda cute – I like her hair and make-up and the dress isn’t terrible. At least she had the sense to accessorize in black.

        • Sophie

I do like the model’s bag, but it would have been too matchy with the dress…

    • shirab

Baby Geena Davis? (With oddly spiky eyelashes.)
I like that the dress seems to have pockets. That’s its only redeeming quality, for me.

      • Emily Giovanni

Good lord. I literally typed “Baby Geena Davis?” (well technically I literally typed “Baby Gina Davis? anyone?” but you get my drift) before I saw your comment. :)

    • LadyVimes

I’d like some of that pattern for wallpaper, please.

      • kimmeister

        Or a still life painting.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I normally like pattern matching but the way they’ve mirrored the pattern on the collar is just weird. It makes that red really dominant in a way it isn’t in the rest of the dress. A less twee bag and edgier shoes would have helped.

      • Sarah

Oh, yeah – really distracting now that you mention it!

      • Tricia Rose

What really would change my liking this dress is no collar, or perhaps a Mad Men-esque block color collar.

      • Evan

I actually really like that the red is emphasized in the collar. I think it adds some interest and makes it pop (Plus I just love that shade of red).

      • Katesymae

I noticed that too. The saturation of the red on the collar is so much more appealing than its mut(at)ed cousin on the dress. Together, makes the dress fabric look dated.

    • SewSophie

She looks like a Blythe Doll.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      Can’t she afford Valentino?

    • kim bunchalastnames

i’m thinking that fabric would make a GREAT knee-length (or maybe a little below the knee) pencil skirt, especially paired with some bold monochromes, but it’s definitely a case of less is more.

    • Sarah

The waist is way too high. It is past adult-twee and into Children’s Dept. with that fit.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Someone please tell me why the makeup is bugging me so much. It seems like perfectly serviceable makeup. But something about it seems off.

      • LadyVimes

I think it’s perhaps because it looks like the eyeliner and eye shadow cut off before the outer corners of her eyes instead of following the full contour. It makes for a kind of shell-shocked look of surprise.

      • Katesymae

Also, I feel like the blush is oddly situated – up too high and in small circles. With the dress, looks kind of Raggedy Ann.

      • KES4K

Maybe it’s the one-or-two-shades-too-dark eyebrows? I know statement brows are ‘in’ but these are not the right color for her…also, the blush, while a nice color, needs more blending.

    • Jessica Freeman

The problem with the dress…it’s friggin boring. She does not exude any excitement. Ever.

      • Julie Ree

        The smirking doesn’t help either.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

“Blue Collar Doll” is the look I’m seeing more and more on the streets with florals being paired with leather. I wish she would have gone not so precious in the make up and shoe – a black leather boot and a smokey eye would have combatted the twee. (And I would have loved to see a broach between the collar, but that would be too much.)

    • Janet B

Too wide through the shoulders and a drop waist? I don’t get this dress.

    • Evan

I kind of like it, but I think the fabric might be its saving grace.

    • @Biting Panda

Another case of human fetchism. It doesn’t matter how many times she’s here, I forget her name before I reach the end of the post.

    • marlie

First, this dress is too wintery. Second, it’s a knockoff of a Dolce & Gabbana dress. Third, that smirk makes her look like a cartoon character.

ETA: Of course, I read the post after I made my comment and see that the D&G connection has already been made.

    • sagecreek

I think it’s fine until one reaches the waist in the scroll down, then it all goes to hell.

I have to say, though, HR looks eerily like my stepdaughter, so I might be biased.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

The top half is too Laura Ingalls with the hair and the collar and the floral print. The bottom half is ….Wilder? The naked shoe does not work.

    • crash1212

I don’t hate the dress, but I do hate every one of the styling choices. Those shoes? With this dress? Are you BLIND! GAH! That hair? ARGH! Now I’m getting all shouty.

    • Emily Giovanni

Top knots seriously need to go away as a red carpet thing. This would be much cuter with a nice pony tail.

    • Danielle

That bun is the bun I struggle to make every Saturday morning before gasping in frustration and opting for a ponytail instead.

      • kimmeister

Why is it reserved for Saturdays?

        • Danielle

Not enough time any other day for the fight!

    • Dany

That hair makes me want to scream. I hate it so much because it reminds me off all the college girls who talk really loudly at my local coffeeshop

    • decormaven

If you’re going to wear a naked shoe, please get a pedi with a nice colored polish. The feet are on full display- add a little interest there.

    • somebody blonde

This would’ve been a good time to deploy pointy-toed green pumps that matched the leaves. And a non-Wilma Flinstone hairstyle.

    • Leslie S

I think the major problem here is the black step and repeat – it’s making the dress seem much busier and stranger than it really is. Too bad, ’cause it’s a super cute dress and it looks dynamite against the white background!

    • MilaXX

I agree about the fit issues, but other than the naked shoe, I like this look.

    • Sif

Aside from the poor fit, this is actually an adorable dress.

    • Imasewsure

Dress is a yes but the styling and fit make it a big fat no… hopefully Emma Stone or Carrie Mulligan or someone like that will discover it and give it a fresh start

    • NMMagpie

I see Anne of Avonlea, updated version.

      • kimmeister

Yes, by then she was out of her Puffed Sleeves phase.

    • demidaemon

I think this needed a very different neckline. And maybe no sleeves. The top half is just overwhelming her.

    • PinkyAndNoBrain

      Really? Beautiful fabric? I . . . uh . . . okay.

*whispers* I think she looks like my grandma’s couch.

    • nannypoo

She doesn’t seem to like it much either. I love the fabric, but not for this dress. It would make a gorgeous gown. But not for her.

    • SierraDelta

Holland doesn’t look sold on this outfit.

    • FibonacciSequins

The weight and texture of that fabric is wrong for that dress. I don’t much like the print/pattern for a dress, either. Actually, I don’t think I like that fabric for anything.

    • mrspotts66

that dress’s waist is a 1988 taffeta bridesmaid dress waist.
she’s the only thing good about that dress.

    • conniemd

I hate the collar. Makes the dress totally twee. The print does have potential, but not in this boring silhouette.

    • MightyMarshal

I think it’s cute but I instantly thought “Someone crossed Valentino with Dolce and Gabbana”. I like everything but the shoes, and I love the naked shoe trend. This is just TOO naked. I also hate those tendrils on the side of her face. This called for something as undone as a topknot to keep it from being overly precious but this topknot is TOO undone.

    • Dagney

      Her mouth….looks…..weird

    • blue808

I can smell the mothballs from here…

    • Sophie

Is the dress fabric more faded than the collar, or is it just the black trim giving that impression? I’d like it if the dress were better fitted and a bit more vibrant.

    • LeelaST

The shoes are too naked, the hair too severe, don’t mind the drop waist (if that’s what it is), maybe a cap or short sleeve would youth this up.

    • joything

For me, Holland’s face makes the dress disappear (which might be a good thing). She reminds me of Geena Davis, back in the day. If Geena had been shorter.

    • bringbackbeatles

GTNYD. This dress is too long in the torso for her. The waist band in hitting her hips where they are starting to curve out, so it’s making her look awkward proportionally. The fit ain’t so good either on top. It’s baggy in places. I also don’t know why the dress is so vibrant on the model, but her’s looks faded except for the collar. Bottom line, she’s adorable, has a great body, and a very pretty face. This just isn’t her dress.

    • d4divine

I dint care how young and pretty you are, hair and makeup are a must…and why the naked site with such a rich dark print.

    • Kikishua

I like the way the collar has a more saturated colour scheme than the dress itself, so it pops out. Or that might just be the lighting.
