Everyone Wants to Be… Taylor Swift in NYC

Posted on April 10, 2014

Okay, Tay. You win this round.

Taylor Swift out and about for lunch in New York City.

Her brand of girlish twee tends to set our teeth on edge, but we always say that no matter what your style preferences may be, whether it’s princess or preppy, butch or roller girl, soccer mom or leather daddy, there’s always a way to upscale the look or interpret it to be chic. If she absolutely has to dress in her Princess Twee getups, then this is the way to make them look grownup and sophisticated.

It’s a really great, covetable dress. Love the shoes, but once again she does this weird black/brown pairing that looks odd to us. That purse sticks out like a sore thumb. And the lips are way overdone both for the look and for daytime.

Still, she’s rocking that breezy, confident, turning-heads kind of style here. Whatever quibbles we might have can’t change that.

She is quite literally turning heads in picture 3!
She looks really cute here. Would trade the brown bag for a fun yellow or green, though.

    • majorbedhead

Probably because everyone else is bundled up and she’s sashaying around in a mini dress with short sleeves.

      • FridaStaire

Yeah – I don’t want to be her, she looks cold!

  • Jecca2244

those legs! and i gotta defend the lipstick. Sometimes you just want to wear a bright color.

    • Yeah, the bold lip is her signature thing, and I love it.

      • Rhonda Shore

        me too.

      • holla

amen! and I am taking a page from her book on that this spring.

  • VicD

    Meh. Just … meh.

    • BayTampaBay

AGREE! I do not thinks she looks all that great.

      • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

From another Tampa Bay resident. Agreed…I hate the shoes.

    • Alloy Jane

Yeah. I think this is the least attractive I’ve seen her look in some time. Also, she’s just too boring for my tastes.

  • poklapy

This might have been discussed and probably no one else cares, but I do! Are we ever going to get an RPDR recap?

    • tallgirl1204

I think they said they had done a binge-watch and would get it to us when they could.

    • Janet B

I think they said the recap would be late due their travelling.

    • boweryboy

In yesterday’s Lupita post, TLo wrote: “Trying to get to the RPDR recap when we can, Kittens. Be patient. Three cities and four flights in 5 days. It’s a little rough at the moment

And in today’s Emma Stone post they wrote: “. . . while we’d never leave you guys completely without the gift of our daily opinions, our asses be dragging and updates will probably be slow and sporadic throughout the day.

I’m jonesing for my TLo RPDR fix too, but the uncles are doing a well-deserved poledance book tour (still hoping for a Seattle or Portland reading). They’re living their Everybody Wants to Be Me moment (and I’m sure there’s a few Do Me moments thrown in for good measure).

We should let them have it and just be patient like a kid counting down the days to Christmas. I’m ceritan they won’t let us down.

      • Rhonda Shore

they are so prolific that they deserve to rest up a bit after their west coast jaunt…

      • Cyd Butler

Meeting my gay uncles at the Chicago event tonight – so excited! (and nervous!) What if nobody wants to be me or do me?! I will have failed them ….. 😉

        • Kitten Mittons

If you get to go to the Chicago signing, then I already want to BE you, dahling.

    • rubigirl

OMG….you read my mind…I keep checking for my RPDR recaps! I feel like it is Wednesday late morning during the Mad Men season waiting for my Mad Style post! “is it up yet?” click…”no, not yet”. “Is it up yet?” click…”no not yet….”

      • Lol, that is absolutely me every Wednesday morning when Mad Men is on. Cannot WAIT for the premiere in three days.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

Me toooooo! Last season, I was working a desk job, so I would refresh TLo all day for updates, especially on MM Recap and Style days, but now I’m teaching so I’m going to have to wait allllll day to read! So ready for the premiere though!

  • tallgirl1204

That dress (in different lengths of course) is timeless and flattering to many ages and shapes. I am also a sucker for an eyelet fabric with a little funk. I agree with a change in bag color, though– orange maybe?

    • Rhonda Shore

    • Kitten Mittons

I really really love that dress. Timeless indeed.

I’d prefer she change the shoes instead of the bag, just because I’d prefer a navy/brown combo instead of navy with the black shoes. I’ve never been big on navy/black combos, though, so that’s probably just me.

  • Theresa

Why is it that everyone else looks dressed for a NY winter, and she’s dressed for California summer?

    • marlie

      HA. Jinx.

    • decormaven

So true! If everyone wants to be … Taylor Swift, I bet there’s a few (including moi) who add the caveat “with a coat”.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She has central heating built into her system.

  • Anna

Getting her Blair Waldorf by way of Karlie Kloss on. Blair and Karlie’s hair look way better though. Still, she looks pretty damn cute.

    • KinoEye

I’m not normally a fan of supermodels, but I love Karlie Kloss. And yes, her hair is way, way better.

ETA: Ha! Just found an article titled “Taylor Swift’s Transformation into Karlie Kloss is Complete.” Nailed it, Anna!

      • Alyssa Ball

I saw a similar article too, and it definitely does appear she’s on the verge of “single white femaling” Karlie Kloss.

      • Anna

Ha, just googled that. So true! Have not been a fan of any supermodel since the supermodel era (besides Gisele), but I love Karlie too.

  • marlie

Nice job, Taylor. I love the dress. It’s really adorable. I don’t mind the lipstick so much as I dislike the headband. The shoes are great, but maybe not with this look. And it looks like she borrowed a purse from her granny.

Taylor must have been a little chilly (in her short-sleeved, eyelet dress), considering the woman behind her in one pic has her scarf wrapped around her neck like that, AND the guy in another is wearing a puffy coat. It’s weird, in-between weather, but *someone* has to be a little uncomfortable. Of course, she’s probably just running to her limo…

    • random_poster

      The headband is wonky.

    • Guest

Those headbands always bother me. That particular accessory seemed to really kcik off in the 60s with the counterculture. Being something of a neo-hippie, I normally love 60s counterculture. But there was a lot of cultural appropriation going on that I don’t love too much, those headbands being part of it — cherry picking from Native American and Indian cultures because it was cool or different. Kind of flippant and disrespectful, but that’s just me.

ETA: She’s wearing that headband a little differently than what I described, but the style of it is in the same vein.

      • marlie

Do you mean Taylor’s headband specifically, or all headbands in general?

      • zenobar

I hear what you’re saying, and I absolutely respect your opinion because you make such a valid point about cultural appropriation.

That said, I’m a member of a Native American tribe and simple headbands like this (and the ones worn across the forehead, Tumblr-style) don’t really bug me. I figure it’s a style that’s been around in different cultures for thousands of years, and I don’t see Native Americans as having a monopoly on that.

Now, a drunk white dude in redface and a war bonnet? My eyes, they hurt from all the rolling.

      • Headbands of various types have been worn all throughout European history, going back to Ancient Rome.

  • Ashleigh

You know, in my limited fashion knowledge, by extensive CAR knowledge, black and brown together are kind of the new thing…I see a lot of cars with this combo – and kinda like it myself…

    • zuzu

It’s got to be the right brown, though. I usually use Doberman pinschers as my metric — those are some gorgeous dogs, and the black/brown combo there really works.

      • another_laura

Nice one. Her bag is the color of what Dobermans leave behind. Not good.

    • 3boysful

I adore black and brown together, but there has to be some repetition, like both colors in a print, or a sweater and the belt, etc., but not just a random brown handbag.

  • Ediths_Head

I think I see some bright blue shorts under there in picture 3. Shades of my 3rd grade self. Dammit, that makes me like her! But not her purse, because that is a fug brown.

    • Cheryl

They might be those Jockey Skimmies, something that I’m a big fan myself. They act like a slip and are super comfortable. As a side note, they saved me from considerable embarrassment, when my skirt fell off (I had lost quite a bit of weight) while mid run in a bus loop. Yeah, people saw my skimmies (which simply look like bike shorts), but it could have been way, way, worse.

      • zuzu

Haha! I love the skimmies, too, and partly for that reason — I once had my skirt fly straight up when I was standing on a subway grate and the F train came through. And not in a “Seven-Year Itch” kind of way — it just flat-out inverted on me.

Though I do recommend sizing down in the skimmies, since they’re not really very controlling.

        • Cheryl

New marketing ploy for Jockey: Skimmies, saving women from transit related wardrobe malfunctions.

    • kimmeister

I think that’s just the lining of the dress that you’re seeing. I actually like that shade of brown, it’s verging on taupe.

  • BobStPaul

Maybe it’s just my monitor but the bag reads as a dark taupe rather than brown and the shoes also don’t read as brown. They both look fine with the dress to me.

    • demidaemon

      But what about together?

    • MilaXX

I’m getting taupe bag, navy shoes, navy patterned dress. Not really seeing a color conflict here.

    • marlie

The shoes look black on my screen. So there’s the bright(ish) blue under-layer of the dress, the navy belt, the black shoes, and the taupe-y brown (which I hate) purse.

  • Janet B

Wow (hahaha), everyone is bundled up and she’s walking around as if it were Spring or something.
She should have a “pop of color” bag to go with this outfit.

  • ChaCha_70

    Love those shoes!

    • Daisy Walker

They work with the dress, but look OW OW OW to me.

    • Sartorial_She

I covet those shoes so hard! Desperately want.

Also, Uncles: I am so sad that you did not make it to the PNW during your trip. Can we hold out hope that it will happen in the future??

  • boweryboy

I would never want to be her. She’s insufferable. However, it is a nicely put together look.

I’m not completely sold on the shoes. Personally, I think some stylish flats would take this to a much more casual chic daytime look. And yeah, lipstick is all wrong but that’s usually the case with her and Rita Ora.

    • Based on her concert (I blush) she has a large wardrobe of little sparkly sneakers and nice flat oxfords. Either of which would probably have been better with this dress.

      • Kitten Mittons

I don’t mind the shoes too much, other than the color with this outfit. I’d never wear them personally, though. Just not my style. I like that she wore a little heel, though.
What’s her concert like? I know I’m in the minority here with my Taylor love, and I’m okay with that. I’m too cheap for concerts these days.

        • I had very low expectations but I really enjoyed it. I was keeping a 9 year old and her mum company, so I didn’t have to pay for the ticket (or booze – yay for corporate hospitality!) Too many costume changes and too many rehearsed speeches; the best bits were her just sitting down playing the guitar or banjo and singing. But coming on 45 minutes late when your main audience is that young is a bit uncool – we had to leave early to get our train and we were not the only ones.

          • Kitten Mittons

Yes, that’s unfortunate, especially with a younger audience. Interesting, thanks!

      • MilaXX

She did a limited line with keds. I assume whatever she wore on tour was a contractual obligation. Not that I don’t think keds are in her wheelhouse, but I could see them being part of her wardrobe on tour.

        • There were sponsorship logos ALL over the place!

    • random_poster

Would flats have taken this to twee? I don’t care for these particular shoes, but I think the style is one of the elements that bring this up to be chic.

      • boweryboy

If they were Charlotte Olympia flats, yes. Outside of that, some sort of “grown-up” flats would go nicely, I think. Or are flats universally considered twee?

I’m even partial to a pair of Chucks or some chunky brogues. I just don’t think heels go with everything everytime.

    • butterflysunita

I don’t want to be her either. But I like the outfit–I would definitely like to be me, walking around in that dress.

  • Melissa Brogan

Is she surrounded by tourists from Florida? Either that or Taylor is freezing to death for the sake of fashion.

I don’t like the purse, shoes, or lipstick, but that is a cute dress.

    • schadenfreudelicious

I noticed the guy sitting at the table in the background in a down jacket and wondering how is she not freezing to death…

    • MilaXX

Weather has been warm-ish. You could get away with something lighter than those parkas the folks behind her are wearing, but a leather jacket wouldn’t be out of line. I’m assuming this was a hop out of the car pick up the coffee pap walk so she should be fine.

  • B_C_J

She looks pretty & I have to say she always dresses like a lady regardless of whether I like the outfit or not. Her posture is impeccable. The lips are a bit bright but it’s kind of her signature.

  • KinoEye

The dress is adorable without being too very twee. Those gams are enviable, but the shoes look a little wonky to me. Don’t want to be her, but she looks lovely.

  • CT14

She needs to get her hair out of her face. It’s plastered on her forehead. Yuck.

Why, yes, I say that to my 10 year old multiple times a day. Why do you ask?

  • Latin Buddy

I’m sorry, it seems absurd to fault a celebrity for being genetically gifted but this girl bugs. She is like that pretty high school cheerleader…and I’m Janis Ian. I hate everything about her lol she probably makes little hearts over her “I”s.

To think, this girl is the same age as Adele.

    • demidaemon

It is hard to fathom sometimes.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Wait, how old is she?

      • Kitten Mittons

I know this! We actually share a birthday, though I have a few years on her. She’s 24, born in Dec 1989.

The google says Adele was born May 1988, so they’re 1-1/2 years apart. Pretty darn close. They are at very different points in their lives, though.

        • Latin Buddy

Couldn’t have said it any better. Adele is a mother, obviously matured much faster than Taylor.

          • marlie

Even before she had her baby, I would have never placed Taylor and Adele at (roughly) the same age. Adele has always seemed more mature – in her personal style and in her singing/musical style.

ETA: They even both write/have written about heartbreak and breakups, but Adele’s songs have always seemed more sophisticated.

          • Kitten Mittons

I definitely agree with y’all, but I don’t fault Taylor for that. Everybody’s different, to each their own, etc etc etc, derp derp derp.

It makes me think of a lady in my office who is at least two years older than me, but still goes out every night, dresses the same way she did in college, rents an apartment, and cycles through boyfriends. I, on the other hand, go to bed at 9:30, attempt to dress office-fabulous, own my own home, and have a wonderful husband and a friggin awesome son.

I think most would agree that I might be/seem more “mature”, but I can’t fault her for being in a different place in her life than me. Yeah, at some age, some growing up is required. But Taylor is still so young, and she’s not a train wreck. She ain’t ready for all that baby business, and I can accept that.

I also think she and Adele have somewhat different goals. Given that Taylor has been around since she was 14-ish, I think Taylor is infinitely more aware of her image than Adele, and knows exactly who is buying her music. Mostly, it’s the same people who were buying her stuff when she was 14, and they’re all growing up with her. And this look targets that demographic to a “t”. Twee via Twenty-Something. In general, I would say her goals are record sales and maintaining fame/celebrity. I offer the above staged photos as “Exhibit A”.

I think Adele wants to create, and the fame that came along with thatwas a bonus, or maybe even a hindrance at times. She doesn’t seem to enjoy celebrity on the level that Taylor does. Adele is about the music, and now, her family. Definitely more mature, but the world needs both kinds, so that we mama types can look at the single gals and go, “Le sigh.”

They’re both lumberjacks, and they’re both okay.

          • marlie

Oh, I agree with you. I was only commenting on their differences as it relates to the realization that they’re roughly the same age.

They’re completely different genres, and have different personalities and styles, and I wouldn’t otherwise put them next to each other. Also, I fully recognize that heartbreak has been a common theme for singers since the dawn of time, so I could compare them to every single other 20-something singer out there if I wanted to (which I don’t).

          • Kitten Mittons

Agreed, I wouldn’t have guessed they were so close in age otherwise.

I don’t think a comparison is out of line at all. They are two of the most famous current pop stars who have created massive hit songs based on personal break-ups, and are roughly the same age. It’s interesting to see how they both handle it all.

My point in general was just that I don’t fault Taylor for those differences. As Popeye said, “I yam what I yam.” I like them both, and think they’re both pretty sweet potatoes.

          • Latin Buddy

    • Dadoong21

To think, this girl is the same age as Adele.

You say that like she’s a serial killer by comparison! People… being… different… BASED ON AGE?!?!? GASP! That’s monstrous, truly.

  • Clydette Wantland

Adorable. Love it from head to toe.

  • Jessica Freeman

I actually like her shoes. This never happens.

  • luludexter

she really looks great these days. I don’t mind the lip – it’s a retro thing I have – and I do agree that she’s dressing a little bit more sophisticated lately. She knows herself and plays to her strengths.

  • TonyGo

Hey Tay, while you’re picking up java for everyone, I’ll take a Skinny Iced MochaFrappaMacchiato.

  • frannyprof

For whom is she fetching coffee?

    • Imasewsure

I’m sure she got it for her assistant (and then promptly through it in the poor girl’s face one the cameras were off)

  • LadyCelia

Those shoes are sassy. And I don’t associate “sassy” with Swift.

  • MarieLD

edited: forget what i posted moments ago.

    • I’m going to go on the assumption that you’re kidding around here, but this wasn’t very nice.

      • MarieLD

I apologize. I thought I read this post before. When I realized my mistake, I replaced my comment.

        • It’s all good, sweetie. It just came off really flippant.

  • Danielle

I really dig the lipstick. No comment on those shoes.

  • ojosazules

I guess hell froze over. I approve, head to toe.

  • Tracey Magyar

Damn it…she looks cute! Love the whole outfit. Wish I was wearing it right now at my desk!

  • alyce1213

That dress is wonderful — cute print, eyelet sleeves, nice shape. I don’t get the brown bag, but I heartily approve of everything else, especially the shoes.

  • I get that it’s all for show. Tay does not walk through NYC. She gets her latte and walks for two minutes, long enough for the pap shot and then she ducks into a car, because them heels are not made for NYC walkin’. Any NYC girl knows that. (SATC was a lie).

    • Bexxx

My go-to hangover place. Mimosa, salmon and avocado tartine, iced coffee. I’m salivating just thinking of it.

      • Oh Yum! That almost sounds like the salmon breakfast they have – so good!

  • demidaemon

That skirt is mega-short. And I kind of hate the shoes. It’s not horrible, but I definitely do not love it.

  • Sophie

I like a good blue/brown combo, but I guess she assorted her shoes to her glasses… The shoes look painful, but I really like the dress and belt.

  • Imasewsure

She sure is ON all the time isn’t she??? Still she looks good in that great little dress (just ditch the purse in my direction please and I’ll pair with browns though)

    • kimmeister

I’d rather see her ON all the time than running to the store wearing flannel pajama pants.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think she looks awful in these pictures. And you can see her lipstick from 3 blocks away, lol.

  • JP

I think she looks fab (though yes, the brown-black mix is weird), and I covet those shoes.

  • Bexxx

Chic roller girl here. Now all I need are a chic soccer mom and leather daddy and our TLo-approved sitcom can start filming. Or Real World-style reality show? I haven’t decided yet.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Cute, but she must be freezing…everyone around her is still in winter wear.

  • nannypoo

It’s cute, but I hate her hair. It looks like no effort was made. And I really hate her lipstick.

  • JauntyJohn

I think it’s nearly official: Overdone lips are her “thing” like lavender hair is Kelly Osbourne’s “thing.” As branding goes, given her papptastic “candid-who-little-me?” gal on the street pics, it’s not a bad choice. Bit of a Tell, but certainly reads as camera ready.

I’m not really a fan, but I have to give it to her, she looks supercute here. The shoes are both chic AND look like they are permanently altering her gait.

  • Gatto Nero

The bag is sort of taupe(?), but still clashes with the rest.
Tired of the matte red lips on her, whatever the occasion.
Cute dress and shoes. I bet she’s freezing.

  • ashtangajunkie

Such a cute dress and great shoes, to boot.

  • Cheryl

Not a fan of the TayTay, but dammit she does look cute here. Love the little dress, and although I have nothing against that purse, I think a bright colour would have gone with her look better.

  • MannahattaMamma

Her legs really do go on forever. Dang. And I wants me those shoes. And never, ever to see an actual human-sized woman in that dress b/c it would be hideous. That dress is made for long, lean, no boobs, no hips, no butt. BUT a gal could wear those shoes and pretend that all those things are true…

  • But honestly, where can I get this dress?? “really great, covetable dress” indeed, TLo!

  • Sarah

Cool shoes. I would rather not EVER be twee, though. I’ll take the chic butch hippie route, thanx.

  • MilaXX

Now this bag doesn’t bug me as much as some of the darker bags have. It’s more of a taupe on my screen and the shoes look navy. There’s no black/brown/navy conflict. I don’t know if it’s because the taupe is a softer neutral, or what, but in this case the 2 work for me. Sure she could have don’t a softer lip, but I don’t hate the lip color she’s wearing here.

  • MasterandServant

I must say, I love the dress and the lipstick. I have a coworker who can rock that bright lipstick all year round and I am so jealous!

  • Mary_Shelley

I just wish she wasn’t such a sour puss – albeit a shockingly bright sour puss.

  • Her color sense hurts me in the aesthetics, but she does have good instincts when it comes to proportion. That lipstick is enviably good on her. I think it’s squeaking by as a daytime look for me because it’s more hot pink than red.

  • Patrick Cleary

The thing is, she always looks put-together, polished, and like she likes the clothes she’s wearing. Most other stars her age don’t have that ability, and for that, I think she’s kind of awesome.

    • Laylalola

      ? She’s in her mid-20s, isn’t she? It’s not like she’s a tween.

  • MzzPants

I love that shade of lipstick….and how some of the people around her are bundled for weather and she’s all breezy on a warm day.

  • DebGuss

Her perfect bitchface is what makes the whole thing work for me.

  • Lilithcat

That’s very cute! Except for the brown bag. I guess she’s terrified of having the dread word “matchy” applied to her look.

  • Shawn EH

Still hate her. Not the bag, though. That’s a “getting down to business” bad. Must have some exec meetings scheduled.

  • andi56

Really?! about the lipstick? Because I wear right red all the time. Actually, it’s Guerlain Divinora 223.

  • BlairBear

I am all for pairing black and brown. Maybe from all the years I had both brown and black tack. I think the shoes are kind of nighttime for such a casual look though

  • Jacob Bowen

Taylor looks SUPER cute, and I LOVE her hair this way! the thing I covet the most are the paisley pants on the woman behind her in the second picture…I LOVE a good paisley.

    • Kitten Mittons

Those pants are not fooling around. My backside fears them, but I want to hang out with someone who can rock them.

  • Sunraya

I hate that purse. She could have dead people in there.

  • sugarkane105

I wish she would just go back to the golden, curly hair she had before. Whatever cut/color combo this is, it’s not working for her.

  • teensmom99

Dear Uncles, you may have to admit that she’s been listening to you and she does a damn good job of it all! She’s been knocking it out of the park.

  • ModernDowager

Two really stellar shoe choices in a row from her

  • amf0001

that’s a little ambitious for New York, I live here and it’s still cover your legs and wear a long sleeved top weather here. I would have been cold dressed like that. But she does look cute!

  • melanie0866

Very cute, but again with the prissy little mouth. Don’t you purse your lips at me, young lady!

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

Hey! Sometimes, a girl just has to wear some lipstick. Even if it IS bright red. Although I don’t buy this whole ‘i just stopped in the coffee shop to surprise a friend with her fave macchiato’! There is no way she can ever stand in line in a coffee shop ever again.

  • LeelaST

I love the background people bundled up like Nanook of the North and Taylor’s dressed for 80 degrees.

  • littlemac8

I don’t want to BE her. It looks like it’s freezing there and she’s breezing around in an itty bitty dress!

  • Headbands are for yoga or children. Not impressed.

I can’t be mad at this – she looks cute. She has her look and does it well. It isn’t for everyone, but she seems to be authentic in her style. I don’t get the feeling that she hangs at her house dressed much differently. I however cannot defend her faux-humble preening anytime she is at an award show. Even my teen daughters make fun of her “What? Me? You gave the award to me? I’m so surprised” schtick. And they SHOULD be her target audience. I could take ALL of it if she could sing on tune when she performs. But she has assaulted my ears more than once and that, to me, is the biggest difference between her and Adele. They are both talented songwriters, trolling similar territory, but Adele can deliver the goods in performance.

I CANNOT with her black/brown thing. That’s always been an eye-twitch for me. This is, however, getting closer to the one way I think it works, which is taupe and black.

Those shoes look navy to me.

I can’t see beyond her obvious future role in a Morgan Fairchild biopic.

    Love those shoes!

Sheer out the lip and do the bag in a fun color (jade or turquoise) and it would work much better. Still, it’s lovely as is.

Her handbag doesn’t look brown to me … more taupe, which matches the sleeves in that amazing dress. When I was young enough and thin enough to wear something like this (which I coveted) everyone was wearing Ditto’s and chukka shoes. Boo.

These pictures are hilarious because everyone in the background is bundled up as if it is 20 degrees outside, and she’s wearing a short-sleeved mini-dress.
