Everyone Wants to Be… Darren Criss and Lea Michele at the “Taste for a Cure” Fundraiser

Posted on April 28, 2014

And now, pretty people dressed well.

No, really. They nailed it. Look:

Lea Michelle is wearing a Naeem Khan black and nude floral deco-beaded dress with illusion bodice and midi skirt paired with a Jimmy Choo ‘Tube’ clutch, Anita Ko jewelry, and black slingbacks.

They look like grownups, which is a nice change of pace for both of them, what with his hipster-twee tendencies and her “TELL ME I’M HOT” tendencies. It’s a shame the illusion sheer is such a bad match for her skin tone. It doesn’t ruin the look for us, but the rings around her neck and arms are distracting. But we’re truly impressed otherwise. Everything matches, they’re both well groomed, and everything fits them just right. His pants might be a centimeter on the long side for our tastes, but that’s just quibbling.

They look stylish, sophisticated and put together. That’s a BE ME trifecta, as far as we’re concerned.

  • Ragnarockette

the dress length is unflattering for a shorter lady, i think.

    • d4divine

      Agreed…where are her legs

    • titaness25

Double agreed. She looks like one big torso.

      • Jecca2244

as someone around her height this is a tough length to pull off. also i think it was supposed to hit on her where it hit on the model? higher up?

    • CO Gal

I was trying to figure out if it was the camera angle (looking downward at her) or the length, but I agree with you it’s the length.

      • RestaurantResolution

The length is really weird. The waist looks kind of low on her, too. And maybe her hair should be up with such a busy dress? If it fit I would like the dress, but as-is she looks kind of awkward.

      • ballerinawithagun

The skirt could be a little shorter but I agree with you that it is mainly the camera angle ruining the look. We short people always end up with big heads and no legs because we are shot from above. Since these are posed shots, not candids, you would think professional photographers would have figured this pout by now!!!

    • ktr33

I dunno. I think it makes it kind of lady-like on her, which she needs a dose of.

      • demidaemon

    • conniemd

My very first thought was that the length made the gorgeous dress look frumpy. It’s just not a place any dress should hit, showing only stumpy ankles. It also makes her body appear disproportional. It’s clearly not a dress one can hem up, and it can’t be hiked up much at the waist or the top of the pattern will be destroyed. This dress then is a For Models Only (or tall women).

    • GorgeousThings

That was the first thing that struck me, too. The skirt needs to come up about 6 inches.

    • It’s Kimmy

I was gonna say, we’re good with that length? It’s giving me church lady grandma.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not loving the length of the skirt in proportion to her legs. It’s too bad, because otherwise I agree that this is an attractive grown-up look for Lea.
Darren looks adorable, and not twee.

    • demidaemon

I actually don’t mind the length on her. it’s the awful hem job that i can’t stand.

  • TAGinMO

I do not like her dress as much as TLo, but I certainly do not hate it as much as every fiber of my being tells me I should. So that’s a win, I guess.

  • marlie

My only complaint is that the length of the dress is really unflattering on her. Otherwise, I like her dress a lot, and they both look really good.

    • Kitten Mittons

It kinda seems like the whole thing is a little too long for her. I wish the waist were a tiny bit higher, as well as where the pattern on her chest starts.

I like it on her, the proportions just feel a little off. But it’s a good compromise between sexy and appropriate.

  • gabbilevy

Yes, it’s definitely a step in the right direction (for them both, but mostly Lea, who has many more steps to go), but that dress still reads like the charity-event-acceptible version of her tackiest tendencies. The pattern on the bust is still way too low, but also somehow but also unsexy. The lengthy was a nice attempt, too, but the proportions give her giant arms and stumpy legs. (I, on the other hand, am apparently feeling very uncharitable this morning.)

    • Rhonda Shore

Her orange-y makeup is bothering me too. This is better than usual for her though, granted.

  • Jessica Freeman

That dress length is the WORST. I feel like, if she must flaunt it, this is a relatively tasteful way of doing so. Darren is just as cute as ever.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Making my eyes twitch where the pattern changes at her waist. Also not loving the change in length. Which seems odd for her- someone must have told her to tone it down.

    • alyce1213

It may be a borrowed dress that she couldn’t alter. Probably she thought it fit “well enough” and chose to wear it, but it’s too long on her all over.

  • Kristen Redmond

    Not feeling her hair style.

  • Noah

I can’t say, “Of course.” I feel so lost. Hold me.

  • @Biting Panda

    He nailed it.
She still looks garish and nauseatingly try hard. She gets no passes from me.

  • BlairBear

Hate hate hate the dress. If I were to see illusion netting and a nude and black pairing on a dress in about ten years it would be too soon. Points for keeping her desire to ham up the poses in check. He looks great.

  • boweryboy

Personally, I’m getting more of a Do Me from Criss but that’s only because I’m imagining him say that to me.

  • LeelaST

Hem length – is that so hard? His pants, and, that dress is the wrong length on her – below knee on model, sister-wife length on 5’2″ Lea. (Interesting seeing the two of them together considering the Glee gossip hinting she & others want him ousted.)

    • save_the_hobbit

I’m fine with that, then Darren can come back to Starkid. I love him but I can no longer tolerate watching Glee just to see him.

  • gayle

I agree it is a nice change of pace but that is not her dress it just too long for her. The hombre hair tend needs to die it just looks cheap and her makeup is too heavy for me.

  • TulipWorthy

The dress needs to be pulled up about 2″.

  • cocohall

That is a very tricky dress, because if you are not exactly the right height, you can’t wear it successfully. The pattern of the lace has such a long repeat that you can’t hem it. I can see why she fell in love with it, because at first glance it is dramatic, but it really needs to be on a taller gal. Still, it is a step in the right direction for her. He is adorable. He should be on everyone’s accessory wall.

  • MissusBee

    I like her make up.

That much illusion netting is always going to look ice-skater to me, even though the beading is gorgeous. But ditto plaudits for aiming for elegant rather than the usual ‘I have skin! Lots of it!’ and ditto also about length.

  • mellorcr

The pattern on the bodice is about 1″ off-center from her cleavage. Either that or one side of her bust is crooked. It’s driving me INSANE!

  • alyce1213

Huh? I don’t like her dress or her blonde-tipped mermaid hair. I guess it’s a small improvement over the usual tacky, but it’s still off.
His suit is nice enough, but the tie is boring with it.

  • stubbornthoughts

Her face looks great, but that dress length seems downright awful on her. Cinch it up to just below her knees and we’re in business.

  • Her dress is too long, his pants are too long, her hair is too long. Other than that, they look fine

  • KellsBells

That length is horrifyingly bad on her.

  • KinoEye

Lea’s look is ruined for me by that abysmal hem length. Again, this looks to be a case of not altering/being unable to alter from the runway version, which falls where it should on the giraffe-like model. But not on Lea, who is probably another of the tiny starlets. It goes from elegant to dowdy with that change in the hem, and we all know the last thing Lea is shooting for is dowdy.

  • Emily Smith

I want to watch A Very Potter Musical everytime I see Darren.

    • save_the_hobbit

I just think about how he originally played Dick in Me And My Dick and wonder how there aren’t pictures of him dressed as a penis circulating now that he’s famous.

Starkid Darren, come back to me. You don’t need Glee.

      • Emily Smith

Right? I enjoyed his starkid days immensely.

      • stickee

I’m sure there are pictures of Dick!Darren around! But I think it’s rarely a full body shot, so all you see is his fro under a bright pink beanie. Tumblr will help you with that one. 🙂

  • Judy_J

    Ms Michele looks positively demure.

  • The dress is too long. Too bad they didn’t have a shorter version for her.

  • frannyprof

I will never get behind illusion netting.

    • MW

Jewelry is so last season, now we have illusion netting seams!

  • uprightcitizen

If you’re going to have to roll the edge to finish off that illusion fabric, it’s going to show up on anyone (and it is distracting and cheap-looking). Since there was going to be a line there anyway, they should have just trimmed it in black, and then I think the rest of it would appear to match her skin tone better, and the edging would look intentional instead of unfortunate.

    • bananamuffin

Agree 100%, thought the exact same thing. It isn’t an “illusion” if we can see it, it just looks like a mistake.

    • Kelly

Yes! Good point. Black edging would have looked interesting and purposeful.

      • ktr33

        good point! yes!

    • Alloy Jane

Exactly, trim it ffs! Those edges are so ugly.

      • demidaemon

That is my main problem with the dress. You’d think, for such a trim obsessed designer, that this elegant solution would have easily come to him.

  • SugarSnap108

Uncles, no. Illusion netting, horrible dress length, bad hair, orange lips. NO.

  • MW

As long as there are things growing on her boobs I will not approve.

  • MilaXX

Not crazy about that dress length on Lea but it refreshing not to see her trying so hard to be hot. Darren looks pretty good even if the pants are a hair too long.

  • susan6

Yeah, no. That dress is horrible. Everything is in the wrong place….the top makes her chest look droopy, the waist makes her look bloated, and the skirt length makes her look short. However, props to her hair and makeup people….she looks great from the neck up.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Sorry Uncles, i dislike that dress intensely, it’s the illusion netting around the bust/neckine (plus the length is all wrong for her).. though i am sure she would get a 4.0 from the Russian judge….

  • Danielle

Loathe the length and that illusion netting is laughable, but otherwise I’m on board.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think the dress would be better a titch shorter. Not cootchie category, just a titch. And I don’t like her lip color. Otherwise, I’m ok with it.

  • Carleenml

Meh. (a) To be or (b) not to be. I’d go with (b).

  • the length on his pants doesn’t bother me, but the length on her hem sure does. Oh, for this to hit her right at the knees!

  • Crystal

Um that illusion netting is hideous and that length is awful on her.

  • ktr33

I’m so relieved for Miss Lea! even her choice of slingbacks is a notch more interesting than a standard pump. I just wish the Uncles could’ve been there for Rachel’s Broadway debut since her gay dads were not even mentioned.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I know people love their tat’s….but this is a good example of why I tend to dislike them. She’s all dressed up and looking “fancy” except that she has these bruise looking things on her ankles – they are distracting and look horrible.

  • jonnyf8

i think she looks kinda matronly, yet still trashy. Are these two dating now? He’s supposedly straight right? She does seem like the type who would date whoever was around.

    • James

He has a girlfriend, she was at the event with him.

  • Alloy Jane

Nice dress, even if it is way too long. Her makeup on the other hand, makes me think of a flesh-colored mime. He looks nice, slightly pooling hem aside.

  • MannahattaMamma

really really great except for the part where her teeth are so white they look like florescent light strips wrapped across her face. And I’m going to pretend that the illusion netting at her neck…is a necklace. Then it all works.

  • Audra Hammer Ross

I don’t know what you’re talking about with a change of pace because he usually looks great for appearances, if a bit like Rachel Maddow’s well-dressed younger brother.

  • Janet B

Gorgeous suit, he wears it well.
    Good effort on her part.

  • Lori

I agree that he looks good, but her look isn’t working for me at all. I can’t ignore how weird the illusion net looks, I don’t like the make-up or the hair (why oh why is anyone still doing that awful ombre shit?), and she needs to lay off the tooth whitening. And here’s something I never thought I’d say about her—the dress is too long. Sure, better too long than too short, but this hits her in an awkward place.

    • CanIbeFrank

It’s hard to say if the dress is too long (though maybe knee length would have been better), but why oh why did the photographer take the picture looking down on them? The 2nd and 3rd ones seem like the photographer is on a ladder! Bad angle for showing fashion.

      • Lori

It is a bad camera angle. Considering that they exist solely for the purpose of people having their picture taken, step & repeats are notorious for being set up to all but insure ugly photos, which is really confusing to me. I do think the dress is actually way too long though and it’s not just a trick of the bad angle.

  • somebody blonde

Man, is major hair product for men back in style? I’ve never liked it.

  • Judih1

I don’t think the dress is flattering on her and it makes her looks significantly older ( could be the styling and the lenght)

  • Dagney

mmmm….I’m thinking that is Helen Mirren’s dress.

  • Her hem length is terrible.

  • James

He looks great. She, I wish the length of that dress was different. It’s really bugging me.

  • nycfan

Echoing the skirt length issue — when I saw the model, I was startled to think that LM is sooo short that a dress that hit the model mid-shin came to her ankles … Maybe it woulda worked better had the illusion netting been cut just below her knee or would it have just looked skanky then? I dunno but the lengthy is really unfortunate, would have been better if it could have gone up 5-6 inches or down 2 more inches.

  • OffToSeeHim

Are you kidding? She looks like my crazy Aunt Ida with that hem down to her calves and that hair.

  • nannypoo

And yet, I still can’t stand her.

  • demidaemon

Not loving the sheer. The way it is hemmed and finished at all its end points just draws attention to it, and makes the technical work look shoddy, though, overall, it’s a definite improvement for her, especially with the headsuit. He looks fine.

  • Alex Rice

Swear to God, I thought that was Penelope Cruse at first glance. The dress is really not doing it for me. Makes her look a bit stumpy!

  • macwell

They look great, and thank God she didn’t go the ‘LOOKING AT ME, LOL AT ME!!!” route. Attagirl Lea- attagirl….

  • LadyVimes

I’d like her dress to be shorter or longer. He’s pretty.

  • quiltrx

Far be it from me, as j’adore Naeem Khan…but this dress looks a little cheaply made. I like the idea but not the execution. Still better than her usual.
And he, as usual, is adorable.

  • PeaceBang

I don’t want to do or be either of them, but at least he looks lovely. She, on the other hand… I can’t sign off on the fit of that dress. Or the dress on her. Or her hair and make-up.

  • katiessh

I really don’t like the length on the dress. it needs to be taken up a couple of inches, which is a weird thing to be saying about a lea michele dress

    • xmixiex

agreed entirely. the length is awkward.

    • Amel

Yes, it really makes her look awkwardly short, especially when compared directly with the model – as if they didn’t fit it at all for her, and she just happened to have legs that are eight inches shorter than the model’s. Can’t say I’m a fan of her ombre hair either

  • Tricia Rose

I feel like this is only nice because they’ve set the bar so low… You don’t deserve a trophy just because you scored a goal when you’ve lost all season.

  • lol, way to point out how short Lea Michele is. Still. Love that dress.

  • She looks like she’s wearing a condom…….
