Claire Danes in Prada at the New York Live Arts Gala

Posted on April 23, 2014

The longer we look at this dress, the more we love it. It took us a while, though.

Claire-Danes-Prada-Live-Arts-Gala-2014-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO-1Claire Danes attends the 2014 New York Live Arts Gala at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City in a Prada dress paired with Narciso Rodriguez pumps.

And we think that’s because Claire’s doing just okay with it. She’s not really setting it off. She never really was a WERQ IT kind of gal. And that’s fine, but we think this dress could really do with some Lupita or Cate Blanchett or even someone like Eva Mendes to really make it sing.

We’re not going so far as to say it’s not her dress, because she looks good. It’s just that we get the distinct impression we haven’t seen this dress’s full potential yet. At the very least she could’ve picked more interesting shoes than that.

The last time she looked good on a Red Carpet was the ice blue Narsciso Rodriguez she wore ages ago. Otherwise she never gets it right.

  • Sarah

I wish the skirt was a tad more form fitting. Or like y’all said, Ms. Mendes would fill it out. I think it’s kind of hanging on Claire, but it I like the pattern.

    • ChelseaNH

Yep. This is a dress that needs some shape to it.

  • @Biting Panda

Hair is lovely. Face is lovely. Dress is…too big? Too Autumn? Too something, not enough something else.

    • inchoate

Too Winter, I think. All that black and royal blue. I actually think that’s the primary problem with it — it doesn’t suit Claire Danes’ colouring at all.

    • Rhonda Shore

It’s an office party look. I’ve never cared for Claire as a blond, she’s best with dark hair.

      • I miss her Angela Chase hair.

    • lunchcoma

I think it’s in the wrong colors for her complexion. She’s delicate, especially with the blonde hair, and I think it just overpowers her.

      • holla

It total makes her hair and face disappear.

    • tereliz

I think the biggest problem with the dress is that it’s creating an optical illusion. The pattern is a little too big and heavy and it’s making her front look flat. Not like “no-boobs” flat, like two-dimensional flat.

    • SierraDelta

      Too ugly?

  • At least there are no faces in it.

  • KinoEye

Lupita makes everything better. I miss the hair from Claire’s last WERQ months ago. I guess she has to have the blonde for Homeland, but I liked the darker shade better.

ETA: I thought for some reason it was a WERQ, but the archives tell me I’m mistaken. It was at the SAG Awards, and I’m not sure she’s ever looked better.

  • shirab

It kinda echoes the carpet, which is weird.

  • clatie

She looks really good – but she always lacks that air of confidence that makes fashion really sing. I actually really like her and I like the things she chooses to wear. They are almost always interesting and she definitely has a point of view. She just doesn’t seem to love have her picture taken standing in front of a backdrop wearing a dress. Her performances are so physical and involved – perhaps just being “herself” is not enough for her.

  • MilaXX

I don’t know if it’s the flashes or what but I don’t think this dress works very well with her coloring. She looks pale and washed out.

    • decormaven

Yes, the blues in the dress don’t flatter her skin color.

    • muzan-e

It’d help if she never. wore. that. lipstick. again.
I swear, that colour is half of what’s greying her complexion.

  • Supernumerary

Is it the dress, the makeup (that lipstick, whoa) or the lighting which is making her look so sallow?

    • MilaXX

I think it’s the lipstick color and the blues in the dress. It’s picking up the blue undertones in her skin. It has the effect of looking bloodless like when you are cold and/or dying. The fact that the backdrop also has that same color blue only compounds that effect.

  • Flavia Pantoja

Tha dress is gorgeous but I think maybe if she had a better haircut or more modern make up, she would have looked amazing. I like her a lot but maybe this dress-up kind of thing is just not her. Maybe she is just Meryl Streep’s little sister! 🙂 And I mean that as a compliment!

  • Joanna

This dress is a fantastic interpretation of the beaten-to-death lace trend. I wish it looked better on Claire, as I like her a lot.

    • Gatto Nero

I was thinking the same thing. The color and texture keep it from looking old and tired.

  • They matched her dress to the carpet – that is not OK.

I really like the dress and would like it more with orange shoes, but it is hard not to see it and think that Lupita would do it better.

  • This dress is absolutely stunning – I’m a sucker for non-sports related blue/orange combinations.

    • @Biting Panda

All sports related blue/orange teams are boooooooo!!!!!
      (Roll Tide, y’all)

      • I grew up near Boise where BSU is. The BSU Broncoes were the underdogs in the great college matches growing up. The idea that the BSU Broncoes are now an industry is a marvel to me.

      • Jacob Bowen

        Go Bears!

  • LadyVimes

A different lipstick and a different hair style would have made a lot of difference.

  • DTLAFamilies

Ugh, no. Dowdy and too long.

  • Lori

I like the dress and I think this would be really good on her if it was a little shorter and she was wearing much better shoes and had done something more interesting with her hair. It’s not bad, but it’s nowhere near as good as it could have been with a few easy tweaks.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Prada’s version of a New York Mets uniform.

  • ballerinawithagun

    The perfect ARTS dress.

  • hughman

J’adore the kicky, retro, emo feel of the dress and I wish she’d played that up a skootch. Maybe a platform with a chunky heel or big bracelet action or her hair pulled back.

    • MaggieMae

Agreed. Although, I want to grab a pair of scissors and cut the rick-rack looking trim off the sleeve and neckline. Oh, and shorten it. Go full on mod.

  • Stella Zawistowski

I’m not into the color scheme, and not just because I’m a Phillies phan, but otherwise, this isn’t bad at all. Agreed that on a different ladystar, I might be saying “love it!” instead of “this isn’t bad at all.”

    • marlie

This post is what determines where the Kittens’ true allegiances lie (Go Phils!).

  • That’s one dumpy dress! I could almost go for the heavy lace appliqués…but not with the scalloped neckline, armholes and hem… It needed another element to finish it off in order to loose the “Ruth Gordon” vibe I’m getting. Oh…and some styling would not have hurt!

  • Jessica Freeman

I love the colors and the pattern…minus what looks annoying and itchy around the arm holes, I think it looks great on her.

  • Alloy Jane

She looks good. I LOVE the dress, and I would wear it if it was slightly shorter.

  • marlie

I like the dress a lot, but Claire is doing the “typical” Claire thing by just standing there. If she just stood up straight, it would make a world of difference.

  • sagecreek

I don’t love the netting at the top, but she looks like her for the first time in a long time, so yay.

  • Danielle

Love at first sight with me.

  • suzq

It’s a FANTASTIC dress and I’ve love to see everyone take a stab at it. Forget Lupita….get this on Michelle Obama!!!!!
Narisco Rodriguez hits it out of the park again!
THIS is modern lace done correctly. More like this, please!!!!

  • demidaemon

Is she wearing tights or are those just bad shadows from the dress? Whatever it it, it isn’t showing her legs off to the best potential. It’s too bad, because this is a pretty great dress, awkwardly worn.

  • Kate4queen

    I loved this dress immediately!!!

  • nannypoo

It’s a little too long on her. Her makeup is awful. She looks unwell.

  • JP

That’s the first good lace I’ve seen in years. Love it.

  • Judih1

She made an interesting dress look boring with her choice of hair style (and color), shoes, make up and accessories.

  • Coolekat

She’s a pale ice queen and that dress wants a hot mama.

  • FibonacciSequins

I hate the colors in that dress. Those particular shades of orange and blue together are very sports-team. The orange and black are very Halloween. It’s kind of making me feel sick. Surprisingly (because I usually darrow it), I like the lace. The silhouette works well for Claire, but I can’t get past those colors.

    • conniemd

Orange and blue. New York Mets. I hate the Mets.

      • FibonacciSequins

You’re right, those are the Mets colors. I don’t hate (or like) the Mets, but I hate their colors! At least the Yankees have style.

Maybe Claire is a Mets fan?

  • theblondette

Look at that beam, though! She looks so happy!

  • Sophie

I like her hair a few shades darker. And I really dislike the little black lace bits hanging out of the armsleeves and collar.

  • cocohall

I wish it had a belt or a v-neck or something to telegraph her shape a bit more. All I see is pattern. But it is an interesting start of a look . . . .

  • LeelaST

It needs to be just a tad shorter or a belt. Really like it though.

  • vesperholly

That plum lip is throwing me off. Needed an orangey-red.

  • FridaStaire

Love the dress, but it desperately needs dark hair!

  • prettybigkitty

Maybe if the dress was a bit more fitted, and the hem just a bit shorter. . .

  • altalinda

  • bringbackbeatles

Love the dress! Unfortunately, I think one big problem is the accessories. You wouldn’t want to go crazy with the shoe since the dress is already extremely interesting on it’s own, but you need a little more interest in the shoe then that. I also think she picked the wrong shade of lipstick. It clashes with the dress and doesn’t particularly complement her skin tone, which happens to be mine as well. Make up looks a bit diy. She needs some powder on her face. Skirt’s a titch too long too. She’s a gorgeous lady and fab actress and I think she could have made this work better.

  • Aurumgirl

The skirt length is too long for her. It makes the dress look mumsy and her legs are suffering for it, too.
On top of that, the overall effect of that embroidered print is very much pull-out-couch upholstery fabric from the 70’s.

  • Nick Pilgrim

This dress reminds me of that Edina Monsoon quote from AbFab which went, “Saffy, how do you do that to clothes?”

  • Clash D

I can deal with the dress but not the make up. Those eyes and brows look way severe.

  • Shawn EH

  • Oh, Eva Mendes in this dress. So much yes. I love Claire, but Eva would know what to do with this.

  • quiltrx

I’m usually not big on Prada, but this is a really great dress. I think it’s a good dress for her…the styling just needed a lot more effort to live up to the dress.
