The 2014 Academy Awards T LOunge

Posted on March 02, 2014

We, for our parts, will be working our asses off, so follow along on the twitters if you want the blow by blow of the red carpet, as well as the entire Oscars broadcast. It’s our biggest night of the year and we’re doing pushups and thumb stretches as we speak.

We plan on being up all night, putting up posts of Oscars red carpet looks as quick as we can, so keep checking back, kittens!

    • PastryGoddess

Ok so what are the drinking game rules. And variations on “Shut up Giuliana” can’t be one of them. We need to actually make it to the telecast tonight

      • MMS_SMS

How about a dainty sip for every Kardashian plug / mention during the preshow?

        • kipper

none of us would even make Ellens opening monologue!

        • lillyvonschtupp

Or a whack on the noggin. Either way, you’ll get tore up!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

My husband is primed to hit the “mute” button whenever Kelly opens her mouth…with Giuliana a very close second.

        • PastryGoddess

          I don’t mind Kelly, she’s vapid and I can do vapid. It’s stupid I can’t handle

        • MilaXX

They are looking like good witch/bad witch right now.

      • PastryGoddess

        Do we reward crying?

      • EveEve

I’m really thirsty, so my drinking game starts and ends with “So, who are you wearing?” Yes, it’s call front-loading, and don’t expect me to have much to say in about two hours.

        • Cheryl

          Yup, that’s the one!

        • http://piblet.tumblr.com/ Anastasia

Take an extra for every time someone actually DOESN’T KNOW ! (Re: Robin Thicke @ the Grammy’s. Incredible.)

        • EveEve

Ryan is messing with me… Damn it Ryan, I’m thirsty. Stop asking them “tell me about your dress.” that isn’t going to get me where I want to go tonight

      • http://piblet.tumblr.com/ Anastasia

Anytime someone mentions Shia LeBoeuf, drink someone else’s drink. Automatic round of shots in honor of anything Lupita wears. TWO rounds of shots if Matthew wears a velvet suit to the RC. Drink a martini in honor of Cate Blanchett’s fabulousness, drink two if she wins Best Actress. Take a shot for every one of Meryl Streep’s nominations (18!!). If Leo ACTUALLY wins an Oscar, throw back an entire bottle.

        (Don’t thank me tomorrow morning.)

    • understateddiva

I’m off to the store to get something with a cork to pop – let me know if I can bring y’all back some snacks as well. Who, besides Lupita, are you looking forward to seeing on the red carpet?

      • PastryGoddess

        In order:
        Lupita
        Cate
        Jennifer
        Jared
        Amy
        Matthew

        • understateddiva

I want to see what kooky getup Meryl shows up in.

      • MilaXX

I have no shame. I want to see everyone. I want Lupita to continue to slay & Cate to continue to be awesome. I wonder if this will be a good Dior or bad Dior day for JLaw. I hope Amy goes retro glam and not 70′s. I want Meryl Streep to have another Chris March moment. I want Mathew to strike the right balance of pimp suit. I want Jared to do a pony tail with black ribbon.

        • understateddiva

I LIVED for Meryl in that Chris March dress. I kinda want Julia to WITFU with a tux.

          • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

but julia has to wear pants this time, ok?

            • understateddiva

oh man, I had no idea she did that, but google helped me out. God that is awful!

        • Blair Sylvester

well if she goes vintage she has a shot in hell at a good dior day. if she goes with Raf than its either going to be mind numbingly basic and boring or awkward and ugly.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

JLaw did a Dior strapless red gown with peplum.

      • Lisa_Co

I had dinner with a balletomane friend last night whose day job is working at Hello magazine ( my friend is in from London). Apparently British makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury is flying in to do Lupita’s makeup tonight. If you read Hello (I don’t) you’ll be able to find out what products she used on Lupita.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

There was an article in the Guardian this week about Charlotte Tilbury. She comes across as fabulously indiscreet but she isn’t supposed to say who she is doing beforehand. Hope she can handle Lupita – her regular people have been doing amazingly.

      • Pennymac

Besides any man-stars who WITFU; Cate, Mary Louise, J Law, Angelina Jolie, and Julia Roberts. I always look forward to the epic what-was-she-thinking-failures, bitch that I am. Rita Wilson comes to mind….

    • Nicholas

I for one will be watching the Lupita Awards tonight.

      • Dadoong21

Am I the only one with a horrible feeling she might get snubbed? I pity the actress who [in that situation] wins over her, which would most likely be Ms. Lawrence. What a bittersweet victory that would be…

        • Nicholas

Oh yeah, I am definitely preparing myself mentally for the possibility of the Usurper taking it, like she did at the BAFTAs and Globes.

It’s pretty much a coin toss.

        • Lisa_Co

I think we’ll know early. If memory serves, supporting actor/actress awards are the first announced.

          • Nicholas

The category is slated to be presented at 4:10 AM CET (GMT+1), i.e. ~5 hours from now.

Gonna hit the bed at 4:20 CET, methinks. :)

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Those are the first of the major awards announced, so we should know by 10pm, at the latest, I think. I’m wondering if JLaw’s win last year will work against her for her work in AH. My personal choice is Lupita.

      • lillyvonschtupp

Yes! We’re throwing a Lupita party tonight! Plenty of Root Beer tonight!

    • MMS_SMS

Cork is popped! Drinking slowing to go the distance!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Hmmmm-time to put a bottle (or two) in the fridge for sipping while viewing tonight-it’s going to be a comfy pants night here, after dinner and dessert..

For my picks: Best Pic-12 Years a Slave
      Best Director-Cuaron, for Gravity
Best Supporting Actor-Jared Leto for DBC, although I’d love to see Fassbender win
      Best Supporting Actress-Lupita N’Yongo for !2 Years
      Best Actor-McConathing for DBC
Best Actress-the divine Ms. Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

    • kmk05

Not watching them (they start at 23:00 GMT!) but am looking forward to all the fashion.

…This is going to sound stupid, but I hate that little man statue every year more and more.

      • SierraDelta

I think the little man is actually a little eunuch. Poor little statue.

    • alyce1213

Who I think will win (not necessarily who I want to win):
      Picture: 12 Years A Slave
      Best Director: Cuaron
      Actor: McConaughey
      Actress: Blanchett
      Sup Actor: Leto
Sup Actress: N’yongo (Lawrence has a slim chance to win because she got the BAFTA, but Lupita’s the it girl)

      • kismet026

        Well that was accurate!

      • EveEve

        most predictable year ever

        • alyce1213

          Yes it was.

    • Sobaika

      Want vs. Will:

Film: 12 Years A Slave/a possible Gravity upset
      Director: McQueen/Cuaron
      Actor: Ejiofor/McConaughey
Actress: I feel most deserve a nod but none really need a win. There were many stronger performances that weren’t nominated. Cate will win.
      Supporting Actor: Abdi or Fassbender/Leto
      Supporting Actress: N’yongo/Lawrence

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

        How are the bruises, kitten?

        • Sobaika

Oooof. There have been some painful moments but I’m holding up! Thank you for asking :)

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Wrap yourself up in something (or someone) warm and cozy, and drink something that is either comforting or will take your mind off the aches.

      • MilaXX

I would love to see Abi win over Leto.

        • Sobaika

I’m REALLY hoping for an upset. He received the BAFTA so, maybe? It’s definitely wishful thinking but oh well.

    • tonibaloney

A toast to whoever came up with the nickname “Guiliana Rancid” – it makes me laugh every time I see her name written, which is good because it counteracts the distaste I have for her.

      • Dam_Angel

I don’t get the dislike for Guiliana. Instead, I find her to be quite relatable and self-effacing. She even has a pretty good sense of humor. I think she does a good job with the red carpet.

        • Ria V

          Nice try, Bill.

        • demidaemon

Considering who they had filling in for her on Fashion Police Friday, Guiliana is a frickin godsend. She’s a little vapid, but at least she has a decent vocabulary.

    • kipper

Yeah! Thank you boys for starting early! For tonights drinking game lets pick one designer and drink when ever its mentioned…. a few years ago it was Marchesa for us, and none of us made best pic – Who should it be tonight – with the objective getting through to the end.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

What channel are TLo watching for live-tweeting? I’m watching E right now and they’re covering red carpet shapewear? What?

      • alyce1213

When they start this crap six or seven hours before the show, they gotta fill with something, apparently anything.

      • MilaXX

Yes because it’s not enough that designers make clothes that almost require lady celebs to go commando, now we get to see the few undergarments that they can wear. I’m mad they don’t include the male spanx shirts.

    • MilaXX

Bring my list over from earlier this week.

Best Supporting Actress – Lupita Nyong’oBest Actress – Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor – Jared Leto
      Best Actor – Matthew McConaughey
      Best Animated Film – Frozen
Best Director – Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity (although I would prefer Steve McQueen for 12 years)
      Best Picture – 12 Years a Slave

      • 3boysful

I picked the same. You saved me some typing.

    • Pennymac

Thank you, thank you! So excited to have a lounge with my favorite Uncles and the BK fam!

    • Lilyana_F

      Want / Will:

Best Supporting Actress – Lupita Nyong’o

Best Actress – Cate Blanchett / Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actor – Michael Fassbender / Jared Leto
Best Actor – Leo Di Caprio / Matthew McConaughey
      Best Animated Film – Frozen
Best Director – Martin Scorsese / Alfonso Cuarón
Best Picture – The Wolf of Wallstreet / 12 Years a Slave

    • alyce1213

This is a fun diversion, for when Ryan Seacrest speaks.
All the dresses worn by Best Actress winners:
      http://www.mediarundigital.co.uk/blog/dresses-worn-best-actress-oscar-winners/

    • kipper

Super Chug moment – and a HALLELUJAH – if anyone pulls an Elizabeth Moss on the stupid Manni-cam.

      • understateddiva

I want them to ALL do that and have a mani-cam REVOLUTION

        • kerryev

Mani-cam was mildly funny in a stupid sort of way the first time they used it. That it continues to exist helps me better understand why Giuliana Rancic is still employed.

      • EveEve

They did it to show off the rings that often get overlooked. Maybe they’ll do a pedi-cam this time so we can all see the designer shoes

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Lupita did the mani-cam and mentioned her frog ring, saying that the frog is her family’s totem.

    • Daisy Buchanan

      Want/Will

      Original Screenplay: Her/American Hustle
      Adapted Screenplay: Before Midnight/Philomena
      Animated Film: The Wind Rises/Frozen
      Supporting Actor: Barkhad Abdi/Jared Leto
      Supporting Actress: June Squibb/Lupita Nyong’o
      Actress: Judi Dench/Cate Blanchett
      Actor: Bruce Dern/Matthew McConaughey
      Director: Alfonso Cuaron/Alfonso Cuaron
      Picture: Gravity/Twelve Years a Slave

    • Sarah

Plenty of beer, parmesan chicken, and chocolate cookies: ready to go! Yay thanks TLo for all you do!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I have some qualms about Ellen as host…..don’t think she was so wonderful the last time she had the job. I distinctly remember her taking a vacuum to the carpet in between the front row of seats and the stage, making George Clooney pick up his feet. Dumb, dumb, and not funny. I heard Bette Midler was going to be a performer. Now SHE’D make an AWESOME emcee, in my opinion! Such a talented and brassy and wonderfully un-stuffy dame. I heard her live in concert years ago and have never forgotten what a great experience it was. I just got a Twitter account so I hope to be part of the festivities with all the other BKs and the Uncles!

      • ThaliaMenninger

I still remember when the Divine Miss M was a presenter — merely a presenter, not an emcee, as I recall — and Tim Kazurinsky, then on SNL, did an Oscars roundup/review as part of their news segment, and he pretty much panned the whole thing except for Bette. “More hilarious women with large breasts” was, I believe, his suggestion for how to improve Oscar. I’m not usually one for the boob humor, but he was right that Bette was the best of that evening, and will no doubt be the best of this one.

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

She is an amazing performer, I have no doubt she would BRING IT in spades to the hosting podium. And ahe has the ability to poke fun at herself, and others, without being offensive.

      • MilaXX

I don’t think she’d do do so greet as an MC. I think it would be as bad as her failed sitcom

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

On a sitcom the actors are only as good as the script. Milder is a great improviser, which is so necessary when hosting anything.

          • MilaXX

She is which is why her live shows are so great, however the Oscars format is sort of a structured free fall. I just don’t think Bette would shine. Her show had a decent cast and a butt load of famous guest stars, it just wasn’t a good vehicle for Bette.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Ellen’s hosting job only confirmed that she’s just not as funny as she thinks she is .

    • GeoDiva

I’ll be watching the Red Carpet Live on E!, but my local ABC channel here in Honolulu is showing the actual ceramony tape delayed by 4 hours! Ugh!

      • Daisy Buchanan

        You can watch live online:

livenewschat dot eu / the-oscars-live-stream/ (no spaces before or after the slash)

    • MilaXX

Playing catch up on some of the smaller movies. Hated August Osage County. It was needlessly shouty. Loved Nebraska. Next up Philomena

      • PastryGoddess

shouty, yes that is a good word for it.

        • MilaXX

Considering the cast it was a huge waste

          • PastryGoddess

            but they shouted magnificently

          • bitchybitchybitchy

For me it’s one of those stage plays that didn’t translate well to the screen. I can see it being more effective with a great cast onstage, live.

            • Courtney

Agreed. It had tremendous tension and energy onstage.

            • Frank_821

Without a doubt. It was created by Chicago’s Steppenwolf theater. That’s Gary Sinise’s and John Malkovich’s company they founded after graduating from college. Steppenwolf specialized in making great productions of shouty family pain plays

            • MilaXX

Sometimes they do, but this one felt like a movie version of a play. It was all too awkward and self conscious feeling for me.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I loved the Eat the fish bitch part. That was hilarious. And you could tell Meryl was having so much fun with it. ;)

        • MilaXX

The one scene I laughed at.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Ryan Seacrest is complaining about the weather in Southern California? Cry me a freaking river here in NYC.
ETA: Hah, I never noticed the cars drive straight over the red carpet at the beginning, how funny.
ALSO WHO IS THE FABULOUS WOMAN IN THE KIMONO NEXT TO RYAN

    • Pennymac

I really don’t like the skirt color of Giuliana’s dress. Nicotine curtains and/or old bra.

      • Cheryl

Ryan is wearing “custard cream,” or so he says.

        • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

          Aaaand now I’m hungry.

        • MilaXX

Don’t care what he wants to call it. It needs a cream colored shirt

      • MilaXX

        Her shoes are fab though!

        • Pennymac

          Shoot, I missed them.

    • MilaXX

Is Ryan’s white shirt/cream jacket annoying anyone else?

      • Cheryl

He’s headed to the Junior Prom after this.

        • Courtney

All he needs is Chucks instead of dress shoes.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Yes. He needs to match or contrast, but cream/white doesn’t work for me!

    • PastryGoddess

What channel is access hollywood on? I’d like to see Johnny and Tara

      • Cheryl

It’s syndicated. In New York it’s WNBC, channel 4.

      • MilaXX

        NBC

      • PastryGoddess

Yeah I’ve got nuthin’ just golf.

        • formerlyAnon

My lament as well. I was quite disappointed.

    • EveEve

Ellen says she’s wearing St. Laurent suits tonight

      • Cheryl

Does this mean they won’t ask her “Who are you wearing?” thus denying us a drink?

      • SierraDelta

EveEve, dahling, who are YOU wearing? There — we can all have a drink.

        • EveEve

Bless you! I am wearing my finest off-gray sweats, with delicate cording through the waistband. Made just for me by Champion. Undergarments by Miss Vicky. (I gave my stylist the night off.). Who are YOU wearing?

          • SierraDelta

Pajamas and some excellent perfume. And, I suspect, smeared chocolate before this night is over. . .

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Seacrest looks like an ice-cream man.

      • Pennymac

        Yes! The Good Humor Man!

    • PastryGoddess

Stupid reality show. Take a drink

    • matildarf

Uggg Giuliana, why do I watch this???

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Who is the bloke with Kelly? The pattern on his jacket is a bit Georgia O’Keeffe.

      • PastryGoddess

        Ross whatshisface from Jay Leno

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Ah. I know who Jay Leno is but I’ve never seen his show.

          • Qitkat

            /snark/ Too late now!

            • Pennymac

              /snark/ You didn’t miss much!

        • demidaemon

Ross Matthews. He’s actually pretty funny in small doses.

    • Pennymac

I’ve given up on complaining about Kellys purple hair. But gurl, ROOTS! And that dippity-doo flip is not doing her any favors.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Dippity-Doo-lord, but that brings back memories….not sayin’ they are good ones, mind you, and yes, that style is not Kelly’s friend.

    • understateddiva

Viola’s 20s inspired hair is to die!!

    • PastryGoddess

Where are the people in pretty dresses?

      • Pennymac

        Waiting,waiting,waiting….

      • Daisy Buchanan

        Here they come!

    • PastryGoddess

      Hey Viola!

    • PastryGoddess

Liza has turned into Mindy Kaling’s sister?

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Olivia Wilde, what little I can see of her, looks 60s adorable.

      • PastryGoddess

Love it. She is rocking the pregnancy style

    • PastryGoddess

      Portia needs new hair

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

New, much younger hair. I thought that was Edie Falco at first.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Also, a better eyebrow person. Not sure her brows should look so orange.

        • PastryGoddess

          Oh I missed that

      • Sobaika

And learn how to say ‘Naeem’

        • PastryGoddess

Ooooh We should take a drink every time someone pronounces a designers name wrong

          • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Are you trying to kill us all? ;)

            • PastryGoddess

              Umm…Of course not..you know I luv you

            • Alloy Jane

So glad I don’t drink. And that I don’t watch this. I’d be comatose from alcohol poisoning.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I am super obsessed with the textile of the kimono worn by the woman to the left of Ryan.

    • PastryGoddess

Kelly are you blind? That bustline does not fit her properly. She can smuggle kittens in there

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I think it is meant to be that way and lets be real about it, if you got to smuggle kittens there is no better dress to look fabulous while you are doing it. :) I absolutely love that look on her. :)

        • PastryGoddess

Oh it looks great on her, but lets not go telling tales.

    • Qitkat

From the Vanity Fair article TLo recommended:

“The people who look like they are wearing their own clothes and jewels,” like Ingrid Bergman in printed Chanel silk dinner pajamas from her own closet, “make the best Oscar moments,” says fashion arbiter André Leon Talley. “That’s rare now—it’s an industry, a system. They are all afraid not to follow the herd.”

Anyone not going to be in the herd? Bets? Drinking game?

      • MilaXX

Jared Leto or one of the smaller indie folks. Maybe a presenter will wow us.

        • PastryGoddess

He just posted on instagram, no man bun. And he is 42 freakin years old.

          • MilaXX

He brought his brother. Love the maroon touches.

            • Alloy Jane

They’re in it together. If you watch the early eps of MSCL, you’ll notice that Shannon is the drummer in his band. It’s very cute how close they are.

    • Sobaika

Lupita N’yongo posted a picture of her finger on instagram and her nails are this beautiful sea green and I am QUIVERING in anticipation.

      • MilaXX

I had to run to IG and see it. I can’t wait to see the look!

    • MilaXX

      Liking Liza’s blue

    • MilaXX

Olivia Wilde wins best dress pregnant woman in my book.

      • alyce1213

Stunning and classy. Jason looked pretty fine too — I like that he chose midnight blue so they didn’t look like a “set.”

    • Cousin_Rose

BK checking in from France here. This is worse than trying to follow the Olynpics from another time zone. It’s 12:30 am here. Just made my SO go out for frites so I won’t starve while I try to find out what Lupita is wearing.

      • Sobaika

        Priorities!

      • Courtney

That is a good SO to do that for you. :)

    • Cheryl

I’m missing vibrant color! Dark blue, pale pink, custard cream – where are the jewel-toned strapless column dresses? (I’m looking at you, Amy Adams.)

    • PastryGoddess

Oh I heard Kardashian, took a sip

    • Nicholas

The Eagle has landed! I repeat, the Eagle has landed!

    • understateddiva

OMG LUPITA IS THERE!!! And the back of her looks insanely gorgeous.

      • PastryGoddess

        *jumpy claps* *happy flails*

        • understateddiva

I am already yelling WERRRRK at my computer.

          • Pennymac

Jinx–you owe me a coke! And We haven’t seen anything yet.

      • Anna

DIED when I learned that she and I share birthdays. Just when I thought I couldn’t love her more.

    • Sobaika

CHIWETEL LOOKS SO HANDSOME AND UNFURRY!!

    • EveEve

Amy Adams in navy is gorgeous

      • Nicholas

Also a very Lois Lane colour, ironically.

      • PastryGoddess

        Love that dress on her.

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Very regal look for her. Love the color.

    • EveEve

Lupita …in a Prada almost nothing Grecian gown. Was hoping for more color, honestly.

      • PastryGoddess

        her shoes match

        • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

          OMG So gorgeous..

    • MilaXX

Love Amy Adam’s dress, but dislike her hair.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I love that very deep blue for her, but do wish that she had gone with softer hair-a cloud of red hair ala Rita Hayworth would have been lovely against her shoulders and that blue.

        • MilaXX

Yes! I like her in a soft Veronica Lake type hair.

    • PastryGoddess

      Love Idina’s necklace

    • PastryGoddess

Loving Lupita giving air kisses from 6 feet away

    • Sobaika

First impressions re: Lupita – She looks so angelic and pretty. I wish she’d gone the fierce and strong route (like the Globes) but she’s so so perfect I just can’t *swoon*

      • Nicholas

Going to make the acceptance speech all the more adorable.

    • alyce1213

Just got a glimpse of Joseph G-L. Adorable. Wanna bite his face. He’s presenting, goody.

    • shelley514

      Lupita sighting!

    • EveEve

Micro-pleated skirts are definitely a thing tonight

    • PastryGoddess

Oh Pharell, why you try so hard?

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

If it were in a pattern or a different color, I’d be more on board but it looks like he chopped off his pants at the knee.

      • MilaXX

I would have forgiven no socks if he had worn his big boy pants

      • Courtney

I can sort of applaud the theory of dress shorts in an abstract, academic way IF this were not the Oscars AND it were not March in North America.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Pharrell is getting noticed-presumably the reaction he wanted.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

EGADS the shorts but no ranger hat, Pharrell you can’t have one without the other!

    • Pennymac

This just in….Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland, is wearing a Michael Costello for the Oscar Liza tribute! And its tasteful. Really! The picture is on his facebook page!

    • Nicholas

Michael B. Jordan found a way to mix things up. Not digging the shoes, though, but points for being different.

      • PastryGoddess

what are those things on his collar?

    • MilaXX

Lupita looks like a princess. Sooooo pretty and femme.

    • PastryGoddess

Shut up Kelly! Lupita is there

    • PastryGoddess

Dear Ryan, you are an entertainment reporter. Pronounce the names right

    • PastryGoddess

Look at the guy taking pictures of her to Ryan’s left

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Apparently Sidney Poitier is a touch on the deaf side.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        And so is Bruce Dern.

    • Qitkat

Nairobi Blue! Lupita looks so sweet and lovely.

      • Pennymac

Nairobi blue is going to be the new radiant orchid!

    • alyce1213

      Jared Leto went traditional.

    • PastryGoddess

June Squibb manages to get her designers name correct. It’s a miracle

    • Sobaika

June Squibb is looking adorable in Tadashi Shoji. More women should look to him for the red carpet.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        I really LOVE that dress!

        • alyce1213

Fabulous color and cut for her.

          • EveEve

And she can wear it again on St. Patrick’s Day!

            • SierraDelta

You’re so practical. I’m sure you should reward yourself with another drink.

      • Frank_821

I am unfamilair with her work but she’s faboo

    • Daisy Buchanan

Jared Leto is just so gross.

      • PastryGoddess

        What’NO he looks great!

        • Daisy Buchanan

No no, I mean personally. He gives me the skeeves. Way too friendly with Uncle Terry and I’ve read too many stories of groupies he’s hooked up with to not get the heebie jeebies.

          • PastryGoddess

            ah gotcha

          • alyce1213

Ew. I had no idea. I think he looks good, though.

            • Daisy Buchanan

Yeah, I don’t know if he followed through but supposedly he was bringing Terry to the Oscars. I hope that story was wrong.

          • Alloy Jane

It’s the one thing that really bothers me about him. His friendship with that walking turd and his predilection for 19-yr-old girlfriends. The groupies, that’s expected. But at least he doesn’t prioritize them over his fans.

        • Sobaika

Can’t sign off on anyone with such questionable bathing habits.

      • EveEve

Really? J’adore. To each her own I guess!

    • MilaXX

June Squibb & Jared Leto for the win!

      • Boobs Radley

it’s like your grandma went to the Oscars! How cute is she?

        • PastryGoddess

and came home with a Hot Young Thing on her arm

      • Frank_821

I just saw her iki page and she’s going to appear on Girls. she’s got a pretty nice resume

    • PastryGoddess

If I see P. Diddy or whatever his name is ONE.MORE.TIME.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I must be the only one watching ABC. I’m in a hotel room with limited viewing options…

      • Courtney

Nope, I’m on ABC too. I prefer Robin Roberts to most of the other interviewers. She at least seems like she has a few brain cells to rub together.

        • Frank_821

          that’s becuase she does

          • Courtney

Fair point. You can tell she does her homework before she comes out – she knows what’s what and asks good questions.

I just like her in general – she’s got a great attitude and tremendous presence.

      • conniemd

On ABC, too, like others, I enjoy watching Robin Robin Roberts.

    • EveEve

      Oh Goldie – never change!!!

    • alyce1213

      Crumbledee Snickersnatch!

      • Pennymac

        Bumble Bee Butterscotch!

      • Sobaika

I have NEVER seen the Cabbagpatch appeal, but he looks pretty yum right now. Maybe that’s the Seacrest affect?

    • EveEve

Bette Midler in the house. Is she performing?

      • Daisy Buchanan

I think she may be singing during the “In Memoriam” segment.

        • alyce1213

          I’m weeping already.

          • Daisy Buchanan

Yeah, it’s going to be a long one this year :(

            • bitchybitchybitchy

We’re swtiching between “Lawrence of Arabia” on TCM and E! at the moment….there are not words to describe how much I loved Peter O’Toole in that film

            • SierraDelta

              My first MAJOR crush!

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Have you read O’Toole’s memoirs-he published two volumes before his death. I can’t recall the titles offhand, but the man could write as well as act, and some of his anecdotes about acting are priceless. Highly recommend tracking them down, as well as the memoirs of his former wife, Sian Phillips-they had a tumultuous life together, but I found her account to be fair and generous.

            • SierraDelta

Thank you! I’m going to see if my library has digital editions; maybe I can download them tonight! I saw Peter O’Toole interviewed many times, and after each, I just wanted to climb into his head and rummage around in the hope that some of his charm and wit would stick to me. I think I knew about Ms. Phillips’ memoirs, so I’ll be sure to see if I can get that too.

Those blue blue blue eyes. . .

            • bitchybitchybitchy

My pleasure! Hope you can find them.

        • PastryGoddess

          Oh lord…

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

HER FIRST OSCAR PERFORMANCE EVER, or so ABC has been shouting out for the last week…

      • Fisher&SonsFuneralHome

        I love what she’s wearing.

        • EveEve

A tad small for something fitted at her house by the designer.

    • Sobaika

      Jessica Biel in Generic.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

        Jessica Beige.

        • alyce1213

Beat me to it – I was gonna say Jessica Blah.

      • PastryGoddess

The reason she’s never done the mani cam is because she wasn’t invited no?

      • Introspective

        Jessica Biel in Zzzzzz

    • EveEve

Jessica Biel: “I’m in head to toe Tiffany.” I want that life!

    • Frank_821

Wow Bette is in a bold diva dress worthy dress

      • sagecreek

i know. She’s still got it, bless her.

    • matildarf

Bette looks fantastic!! Love that dress on her.

    • Frank_821

I don’t know about Kerry Washington

      • Courtney

I like the dress, especially the color. Not sure about the makeup.

        • PastryGoddess

She should have done lighter makeup with that dark of a dress

      • Frank_821

        I should say I dont hate but……

      • Introspective

love kerry but I cant co sign on her look tonight (bks dont kill me!!)

I think She said to herself: LA is so rainy and Im eleventy months pregnant. So fuck effort.

And fuck effort she did. Cause the dress is a wrinkly mess and the dampness of the rc was painfully obvious on that unforgiving satin fabric…

    • PastryGoddess

      Is Sally Hawkins drunk?

      • Cheryl

        Nope, just British.

        • PastryGoddess

          fair enough

      • Pennymac

        I thought the same thing

    • sagecreek

Oh, Sarah. Didn’t they have anything beiger?

      • PastryGoddess

But if she was super blond, it would look worse

        I like her hair color

        • MilaXX

Agreed the hair is an improvement

    • PastryGoddess

      Cate is naked

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Yes but someone sewed all kinds of frippery and wickety wack onto her naked. That musta hurt! :)

    • understateddiva

Stay upright JLaw. I don’t think I’d be doing so well with booze and heels so I feel your pain, girl.

      • MilaXX

Yeah the falling down thing is getting old. Put her in things she can walk in.

    • alyce1213

Too much sparkle on beige. Everywhere.

      • sagecreek

        No kidding. Et tu, Cate?

    • MilaXX

Cate looks lovely but there too much of that blush color on the RC this year.

      • EveEve

She’s not bringing the drama tonight in the Armani. Oh well.

      • Qitkat

It does seem to be a very pastel carpet.
I do love how the lining color was so perfect with her dress.

      • Sobaika

Seriously! And I’m sure some of these look lovelier in person or photograph well, but on camera they look less blush and more like lint.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Cate looks like she body-melded with a chandelier.

      • Cheryl

It looks like she has hotel room keys hanging from her un-dressed body. Weird.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Matthew McC cleaned it up for the red carpet. THANK GOD the facial mess and shiny suit is gone.

    • Frank_821

Cate looks fine but I kind of feel like she decided to go for “comfortable”. Like she wasn’t trying to be the best dress

    • MilaXX

Mathew shaved. It seems white or light colored tux are in style for the male stars.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I understand an assistant spent 3 months testing razors.

        • PastryGoddess

You cannot type things like than when I’m not prepared. you owe me a keyboard

      • alyce1213

I was hoping he would. Not that I have that much invested in it, just kinda wishing he’d clean up.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Price and Waterhouse are in da house, yo!

      • matildarf

        Who are they wearing??!!??

        • Cheryl

          Drink!

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Schlub and Schlub, couturiers to accountants everywhere!

    • Daisy Buchanan

I wish the Muppets hosted a red carpet show. They’d be such a huge improvement over Seacrest & Co.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Robin Roberts and crew are doing rather well over on ABC.

        • Daisy Buchanan

I’ve been flipping. I forgot about ABC until I saw you mention it downthread!

        • Courtney

Unlike many of the E! contingent, they seem to have actually read about the people they’d be interviewing and the movies they appeared in.

          • Daisy Buchanan

Who is the guy with white hair and glasses? I keep thinking it is Dr. Drew. (Disclaimer: I’m really blind without my glasses on.)

      • alyce1213

And Miss Piggy is wearing a very beautiful aqua Vivienne Westwood.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          HA!

        • Daisy Buchanan

          Miss Piggy for the win!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I’d pay money to see Miss Piggy karate chop Seacrest, and I don’t think I”m alone with that thought.

    • EveEve

Now Charlize, on the other hand, is all about the Do ME!

    • EveEve

That is the worst maternity gown I have ever seen. good grief girl.

      • SierraDelta

Makes her look like she’s having quadruplets at the very least.

    • Qitkat

      Matthew! You’re so un-shiny!

    • PastryGoddess

Mom is wearing Texas pageant couture. At least MMC and Camilla cleaned up

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Excellent description!

    • Daisy Buchanan

Oh FOR GOD’S SAKE. Another wacky J-Law moment *eye roll*

    • PastryGoddess

I think I’m going over to ABC. E is getting on my nerves

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

For what it’s worth, I’m starting in a box of Tag-A-Longs. I was accosted by a very industrious Girl Scout at the local Safeway.

      • sagecreek

I am out of wine. This makes me sad.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          Boo!

          • sagecreek

I know, and I haven’t even seen Mary Louise yet!

      • susu

I’m sitting here with a box of Tag-A-Longs on my left AND a box of Samoas on my right. These cookies are crack.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

And now I have an empty tray formerly full of Tag-A-Longs. Five minutes. May be a record!

          • Courtney

They are easily the most dangerous of the brand.

            • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

i was trying to remember earlier today why I never buy them. I should just throw a 20 at the Scout and run in the other direction!

      • ThaliaMenninger

You just reminded me that there is a box of cookies left over from my Girl Scout binge. Gotta go find those suckers.

      • MilaXX

I am the one person in the world who dislikes Girl Scout cookies. They all taste plastic to me.

        • SierraDelta

          And they’re ridiculously expensive.

    • MilaXX

Alright, I gotta make a food break. I’m bringing a tray in from the kitchen.

      • Sobaika

I have a gallon of water, popcorn, vegetables, hummus, potato chips, iphone, ipad, and laptop. Cray!

        • Courtney

We have a collection of snacks from an ill-timed trip to Trader Joe’s yesterday (we were in line for 25 minutes, at least).

          • EveEve

            TJ pizza chez Eve tonight!

            • Courtney

TJ is very seldom the wrong answer.

        • MilaXX

Isn’t it sad? How did we ever watch award shows without all this technology before? I’m doing laptop, iPad & iPhone as well.

      • sagecreek

        Run, Mila! Run!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Jonah HIll and Proud Mama!

    • PastryGoddess

Also taking a food break. Indian food on the menu

    • Frank_821

      Yes Charlize is looking fierce

    • Lilyana_F

Wow, Charlize might be winning the red carpet tonight.

      • sagecreek

She does look fabu, but for me most of that is just Charlize. Both the illusion netting and the mermaid shtick make me tired. You might well be right, though.

      • Sobaika

I might be the only one who thinks the straps/neckline are weird. Overall impact is supahfierce though.

        • Pennymac

No, its weird. It just seems to stop and where it stops is too wide apart, IMHO.

        • Alloy Jane

You’re not. It’s weird. I saw it and was disappointed.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Tom & Lorenzo are mightily agreeing with you on the tweets.

    • Nicholas

      Leo looking sharp in blue.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

DiCaprio? Reads black on my TV.

        • Nicholas

Definitely looked blue here, but maybe the lighting was playing tricks?

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Nope! Interviewer (whose name I can’t remember) just said navy blue.

            • Nicholas

              Red-carpet journalism at work.

        • MilaXX

Lots of male celebs decided to try the dark navy instead of traditional black

        • alyce1213

Hard to tell unless he’s standing next to someone wearing black (like Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis).

      • another_laura

But skanky neck beard making me nuts

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Me too… But probably not in the same way!

    • ashtangajunkie

      Oooh, Leo looks good.

    • sagecreek

On E, they just said that Amy Adams styled herself tonight. While I seriously doubt that, I do enjoy imagining her firing the person who did that last severe ponytail do.

      • PastryGoddess

I think they meant the clothes, not the rest.

      • Agent Sculder

I heard that this year she decided she was just going to pick a dress SHE liked rather than relay a stylist to pick for her. She should go with her instincts more often!

    • EveEve

Waiting for Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie. C’mon ladies, let’s pick up the pace!

    • Stubenville

This is utterly idiotic, the crowd is shrieking so loudly they’re drowning out the commentators.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Isn’t it always like this?

      • Daisy Buchanan

        On E!, though, that’s a good thing :)

    • ThaliaMenninger

I know I’m standing alone on this one, but I love Cate Blanchett in her Armani. Freakin’ LOVE it.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        No. I’m with you!

        • ThaliaMenninger

          YAY!

      • alyce1213

It’s a beautiful dress, I just complained about too much of that color + sparkle on a lot of ladies.

    • Cheryl

So E’s arrivals are over now?

      • sagecreek

I hope not, there’s still 75 mins to go!

        • Cheryl

Ryan’s gone – it’s just G and Kelly etc. talking about fashions. I think that once ABC picks up, E is finished.

          • sagecreek

            Tks, I’ve changed channels!

      • EveEve

        Nah, no Sandra Bullock yet.

    • MilaXX

No Julia. That’s a granny dress

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

OK — Based on ABC’s little featurette on American Hustle’s costumes, I’m going to have to watch that film!

      • Sobaika

The clothes and hair are the only great parts about it. It’s a fun movie.

    • EveEve

Julia Roberts looks patethically Lord and Taylor. Either fire your stylist or start listening to her.

      • ThaliaMenninger

She’s got a hint of the pigeon breast thing from 1901.

      • Lisa_Co

Looks like a bad Halloween costume. All she needs is a hat and broom.

    • PastryGoddess

Whomever is mixing sound for ABC sucks. turn up the volume to drown out the people

    • Daisy Buchanan

      “Jessica Roberts”? Ouch.

      • sagecreek

That was a classic! Oh, Julia. I do believe your moment in the sun has passed.

        • Nicholas

          “Emma Roberts’s aunt” henceforth.

          • sagecreek

            Double ouch, I’m guessing.

        • PastryGoddess

I just want her to be smugly condecending in an interview “Who’s Tyrese?”

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        It can’t be un-heard…

      • PastryGoddess

        pretty sure my brain broke

    • DagnyReardon

I am underwhelmed so far. Safe, boring but nothing with a WOW. Call me jaded.

      • sagecreek

No, same here. And the beige, my God, I’m falling asleep.

      • Nicholas

Yep. Nothing amazing, nothing tragic. Where is Helena Bonham Carter? Someone summon her.

        • sagecreek

I did see a still pic of Liza Minelli, and if that was from tonight? Whoa, boy.

          • PastryGoddess

If it was colbalt blue. yes it was

        • EveEve

          Cher. We need Cher.

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

i did just see Gabourey Sidibe in something quite fabulous!

            • Sobaika

              WHERE??? I love Gabby!

            • Nicholas

You need to say her name a third time.

            • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Robin Roberts was talking to Bradley Cooper up on high and she was gliding down on the carpet below.

          • Introspective

we always need cher. but we’ve never needed her like we need her tonight.

      • Sobaika

No, most of this red carpet was a total snooze.

        • EveEve

The stylists. They’re ruining it for us Bitter Kittens.

      • Introspective

when the dress color of the night is drugstore pantyhose “nude” (that is, if you have white skin) you know the hollywood stylists are slipping…

    • MilaXX

Not liking JLaw’s hair. Dress is just okay.

      • Sobaika

I don’t really get what her team was thinking – she had a great Red moment when she was nominated for Winter’s Bone (the only nomination she’s ever deserved, I’m full of haterade tonight) and she a similar look with her necklace last year.

I suppose it could have been worse, all things considered.

        • MilaXX

You are totally in my brain. I think her Silver Lining win was her Scent of a Woman makeup win. The red Calvin Klein she wore was a classic. This is just a’ight and the goofy falling girl next door thing is starting to look calculated now.

          • Introspective

although the girl could just be downright clumsy. which to me isnt a feather in her cap. no matter how much the hollywood machine tries to sell it as part of her “cornfed charm”

            • MilaXX

Completely understand that but they need to put her in things she won’t end up tripping all over.

      • Introspective

she has suburban mom driving the softball team in her minivan hair.

        • MilaXX

          That color is awful!

      • livesarah

The hair ages her about 30 years. Dreadful.

    • Trickytrisha

Liza Minelli’s breasts made an appearance on the Red Carpet.

    • sagecreek

Barkhaid Abdi is adorable. He cannot even really tie a tie, bless his heart.

      • PastryGoddess

and his suit is too big

    • Nicholas

      Angelina Jolie wearing something.

      • sagecreek

In the brief glimpse I got, it looked damn fugly, but it was only a glimpse.

        • Nicholas

Same here. It looked positively abominable in the picoseconds it lasted.

      • PastryGoddess

all I saw were boobs and fungus

        • Pennymac

          Yes. Its quite unfortunate.

        • SierraDelta

          Tinsel.

      • Guest

Oh God, TLo just posted a full-frontal of the dress, and I intend to sue for tort.

    • Lilyana_F

      Loving Kate Hudson’s dress.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Barkhad! I so want him to upset Leto (I just think Muse was a more complex, better realized character).

      • sagecreek

        Team Abdi! Sign me up!

        • Daisy Buchanan

Did you see when he won at BAFTA? Hanks genuinely lit up with happiness – not in that Jessica Roberts way of mugging all over Denzel’s win, but truly just thrilled to see his co-star’s name announced. It was great.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Hanks’ reaction at the BAFTAs was so natural and sincere-I loved that he whistled!

      • Sobaika

YESS!! Yes yes yes yes yes. I’ve been hoping for that all week. He is so deserving.

      • leahpapa

Yaaaaasssss. I’m so over the slowclap for Leto, made worse by his transphobic remarks at the podium earlier this year.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Truly, it’s just not a very deep character, or characterization. Is it moving, sure. But did he really knock it out of the park like Abdi did? No way. Muse was a haunting, scary and sad figure.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

OK — Now I’ve seen it twice — these mid-1930′s male haircuts -slick-back on the top and very short on the sides. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. Is this a thing?

      • alyce1213

Apparently so. I read a story that it’s the rage in Great Britain, and it’s starting here. I find it a little scary.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Thank you for that info. And, yes, me too. It reminds me of Germany more than anything.

          • Cheryl

I read that Brad shaved his long hair for a film role. This is 1000% better, even if it’s only temporary.

      • not_Bridget

It’s in honor of the coming Centennial of The Great War. Lice were a big problem in the trenches. (In fact, that’s when “lousy” entered the vocabulary as a synonym for “crummy.”) So almost-shaven heads became the style….

    • ThaliaMenninger

With the little hair band, Lupita is looking very DIsney Cinderella. It’s weird she called that color Nairobi blue when it’s reading seafoam green on my telly and four different places on my computer.

      • sagecreek

Huh. It’s absolutely sky blue on my TV. As much as I love Lupita, I kind of hate that she went so pastel.

        • ThaliaMenninger

It’s probably my eyes. My husband and I have been arguing about what’s blue and what’s green since 1982.

        • EveEve

Right? I was hoping for Big! and Bold! and Colorful! Maybe some pattern, or floral or ombre.

          • livesarah

She can pull off stuff that no-one else can, I found her dress really standard and disappointing!

            • EveEve

On any other actress it would have looked so very Golden Girls meets Catherine Zeta Jones. But its Lupita.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that the Ralph Lauren she wore to the Globes was a hard act to follow, but Lupita has so spoiled me that I was wanting something more than this gown-it’s lovely, but for Lupita it’s almost a meh

      • andi56

Hmmmm! Maybe it’s calibration on my Macbook, but it looks more seafoam to me.

        • Aurora Leigh

Ryan Seacrest has decreed that it is called “duck egg blue.”

    • PastryGoddess

      Bill Murry just flew in

      • Nicholas

Crashlanded a helicopter fifty meters from the carpet.

    • Frank_821

oh i just got a good look at robin’s dress. girl looks excellent

    • PastryGoddess

This Kimmel bit went on for about 2 min too long

      • sagecreek

Agreed, although comparing La Streep’s wardrobe to a drunk elementary art teacher was right on the money :)

        • Courtney

I thought she looked pretty good tonight, by Streep standards.

          • sagecreek

I haven’t seen her yet! Waiting with bated breath.

            • Courtney

              EW has a picture.

    • MilaXX

Unpopular opinion of the evening; I don’t like the top half of Charlize Theron’s looks and I wish her makeup was just a touch warmer.

      • Pennymac

No vote opinion on the makeup, but I hated the weird, too wide neckline illusion strap thingies.

        • Aurora Leigh

Totally agree. Every time I got a glimpse of that dress I thought it was being held up by those cheap clear-plastic-bra-strap thingys.

      • Introspective

me too. the neckline is odd. the square extensions on the sweetheart neckline was a bridge too far. charlize is gorge but even she cant pull that off.

      • Alloy Jane

Yeah, I don’t get what’s so appealing about a horned breastplate. Close up it looks like two silhouette onions with the greens clipped off.

      • matildarf

from the chest down and neck up, she looks fantastic. I don’t like the invisible straps.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I can’t find any coverage of the red carpet here in Australia now. :( Ready to go postal here! I WANT TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPEN NOW.

    • andi56

WHAT is with Jennifer Lawrence, who can’t seem to walk anywhere without tripping and grabbing a hapless creature on the way down?! When you see the video, check out the poor woman’s surprised face when JL almost pulls her dress off, grabbing her shoulder for balance. Good grief! If you can’t wear long, go short, or have someone hold your hem for you!

      • Daisy Buchanan

Please she’s sooooooooooooooooo wacky and down to earth!

        (Or, drunk.)

        • andi56

We call that clumsy! ; )

          • Daisy Buchanan

That’s how I often explain the bruises as well ;)

      • Sobaika

She was not falling, she was bowing in Lupita’s direction.

        • Introspective

          yaaaaassssss

        • Frank_821

She should say that to the press when they ask her abut it. It would be a double cunning PR for both of them

        • andi56

Ha ha! When I was in TV PR, we always had to come up with stuff like that!

    • Daisy Buchanan

      Please, no more Jimmy Kimmel.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

is that about tonight? or is it more of an existential plea?

        • Daisy Buchanan

          The latter :)

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Don’t worry. He’ll be off the tube by 2050, latest.

            • PastryGoddess

              You’re so optimistic

      • conniemd

That spot was totally tacky and NOT FUNNY.

    • Sobaika

Will Smith just snuggled deeper into my heart!!

      • Frank_821

I always like this Will Smith. wish we could see more that one. Less of the After earth Smith

        • Courtney

I generally like him better when he’s not Gypsy Rose Lee-ing his kids.

          • alyce1213

They got Razzied badly this weekend for After Earth.

            • Courtney

And yet I’m sure they’ll still keep trying to make fetch happen.

    • Sobaika

On most other people I would hate Angelina’s dress, but I’m just so pleased she’s not wearing a black or white sheet.

      • Pennymac

Choosing the lesser of two evils still means I’m choosing evil. Someone said fungus and boobs earlier. I agree. Why can’t she wear color?

        • ThaliaMenninger

          Definite yes on the fungus.

    • Nicholas

      Oh dear, Lady Gaga.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Did anyone else catch Grirgina Chapman in the background looking like a feather duster?

      • Sobaika

        As per usual.

      • Introspective

no but are we surprised given the overwrought stuff marchesa puts out??

    • ThaliaMenninger

I like Meryl’s dress but not so sure on the hair. Okay, I don’t like the hair.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      13 minutes… Can’t wait!

    • kcaza

Jeremy Renner doesn’t look like a villainous banker, which I suppose makes up for the fact that he’s the cheese of American Hustle.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I think Renner’s pompadour in AH should get a special hair Oscar

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“This is a global event, many months in the making.” Actually, not quite as global as usual. Not seen live in Russia.

      • not_Bridget

Can’t risk a comment that Putin might find disrespectful. Hey, what’s wrong with invading your neighbor?

    • Pennymac

Oh, Sandra Bullocks McQueen is FANTASTIQUE!

      • Introspective

yes! hers is a much more visually interesting navy gown than amy adams’ gucci, which is nice, but felt safe.

        • Frank_821

I thought Sandy’s dress was more of a royal with a hint of the purple

      • ThaliaMenninger

I am imagining eyelids twitching over the one-shoulder hair, but the dress was fabulous on her.

        • Courtney

And yet we can all rejoice that it was not a center-parted, flat-ironed non-style.

      • alyce1213

        My favorite of the night.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Love the color and the draping of that dress is simply gorgeous-you did good, Sandra!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“The amount of air kissing going on is just phenomenal.” That may be my FAVORITE line ever!

    • MilaXX

Love the color of Gabby Sidbe’s gown. I need to get a front view but I think I like it.

    • Introspective

on abc now. i looooove kevin spacey’s tux. that is sharp as hell. reminding me of how much i love and loathe him on house of cards… werq kevin.

      • Pennymac

I totally have the hots for evil Francis Underwood. AND Kevin Spacey. And probably Robin Wright, as well.

        • sagecreek

Doug Stamper! So evil, so bad :)

          • Pennymac

Its settled, then. House of Cards orgy, anyone?

        • Introspective

OMG robin wright’s claire underwood is a bad bitch. when she said she would let that woman’s baby “wither and die inside of her”?????

i cannot. she is CRAZY. and I love her. that show has me HOOKED.

    • Qitkat

Switched to ABC coverage a while ago, the E! Team fest was too gooey.

      • demidaemon

That’s pretty much their MO. That’s why my top three RC commentators are TLo and Joan Rivers.

    • Nicholas

      Kevin Space for 2015 host!

      • Introspective

“full house of cards” just made me guffaw! he probably could be a way better host than many in the last few years!

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

So ambivalent! Wish he would just come out and get it over with… None of my business, but still…

        • PastryGoddess

Why does it matter? In…Out…he’s still a great actor

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

            Integrity.

    • Introspective

      ellen’s shoes are kinda fierce!

    • Courtney

Is anyone else unsure about the pussy bow bow tie on Ellen?

      • sagecreek

I dunno, I think she just looks great.

      • AlmostClassy

        I thought Col. Sanders

        • Daisy Buchanan

          *spits ice cream on laptop*

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          Shirley Partridge.

        • ThaliaMenninger

          Maverick

      • PastryGoddess

I like it. It’s a take on menswear with a feminine touch

      • Introspective

yeah. I am not really feeling the bow either. too much and yet not enough. i would have liked that blazer to just do its lovely work by itself.

    • Stubenville

      Is she a barrister?

      • ThaliaMenninger

I’d like to see her escort Penelope Cruz, who looks all Regency lady. But I suppose Ellen is more highwayman than Lord Byron.

    • Frank_821

hurray for Ellen giving June a shoutout

      • Daisy Buchanan

Team June (but in that category, Team Anyone Not Named Jennifer Lawrence).

      • PastryGoddess

        As in literally shouting

    • MilaXX

Not liking the fit of Ellen’s suit. Sleeves look too short and I dislike the vest.

    • Daisy Buchanan

      Ooof. Poor Liza.

      • Introspective

my jaw just dropped. but that shade was funny as hell.

        • PastryGoddess

          I need some sunglasses

      • matildarf

That was the first mean thing I’ve heard Ellen say.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Yeah, that seemed way more like a Ricky Gervais comment than an Ellen one.

        • Frank_821

Yeah but I get the feeling Liza doesn’t care and will laugh it off

          • Daisy Buchanan

Or hit the open bar :(

            • PastryGoddess

              If she hasn’t already

          • Courtney

She certainly seemed like the was while trying to pull a stern face.

          • alyce1213

She knows that she and Cher are the most impersonated, it was funny.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Oh my. Flashback on the 30 Rock HD episode.

      • PastryGoddess

        That was amazing

    • alyce1213

I believe Liza may not be wearing a brassiere. Oh boy, we’re in for it.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Oh dear. We may have to avert our eyes, is what you’re saying?

    • MilaXX

Seriously this nude/natural face stuff needs to die. Some of these gals really need some mascara and lipstick.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Shirley Partridge is a great host!

      • Introspective

        SHADE

      • PastryGoddess

        bwahahahahaha

      • Stubenville

        C’mon get happy!

    • alula_auburn

I don’t really think Jennifer Lawrence needs to win again, but damn she does cute reaction shots.

    • Introspective

you wont have to bring jennifer the oscar since it will belong to lupita tho. (but that was funny ellen)

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        word!

    • Courtney

I’d jump off a building if Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper, and Jean Dujardin were going to move to help me up.

      • PastryGoddess

I’d do it just for Hugh

      • bitchybitchybitchy

So would I. That is a really, really ridiculously handsome trio.

    • Stubenville

Sorry kids – Ellen is kinda bombing.

      • PastryGoddess

        agreed,

        I’m on mute

      • sagecreek

Oh, I so disagree! But that’s fine, that’s what we’re all here for.

      • Pennymac

Seriously. Good job sir? I have a sense of humor, but found that insulting.

      • alula_auburn

I’ll still take bland over LOL BOOBS though.

        • ThaliaMenninger

For sure. Notice he’s nowhere in attendance. Not even a seat filler.

      • MilaXX

That hosting gig is hard. Billy Crystal just makes it look easy.

    • Sobaika

Ellen is going in on Lawrence’s famed clumsiness but it doesn’t matter because she is sitting between Bradley Cooper and Nicholas Hoult #jealous

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

What are all those blow-up Oscar dolls for?

      • alyce1213

        Or Whom are they for?

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          snap!

      • Introspective

        the afterparty?

      • Daisy Buchanan

If a winner goes on too long, they’ll come to life and drag him or her off stage.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          Oh, if only!!

    • ThaliaMenninger

In terms of Ellen’s look, I think I’ve decided it’s the waistcoat I like the least. It’s making her look bulky in the middle.

    • Nicholas

That Hathaway intro wasn’t ridiculous at all.

      • Courtney

        Very affected.

    • MilaXX

Annie’s dress works much better on stage than it did on the RC

    • Daisy Buchanan

Here comes my first letdown of the night *sigh*

      • sagecreek

Drat. I was still hoping a tiny bit.

        • Daisy Buchanan

          Me too. Bah humbug.

      • ThaliaMenninger

Yup. I didn’t realize just how much I wanted Bakhad Abdi to win till I saw the clips.

      • Sobaika

        :(

Look, Leto wasn’t bad in DBC. He was rather good. But there’s something to be said about the way cis actors get LAUDED for playing trans characters, particularly in a year where Fassbender, Bruhl, and Abdi BROUGHT IT.

In other news, Leto’s mom is beautiful.

    • leahpapa

My hubs just now: Anne Hathaway’s chest looks like a sports arena full of flashing cameras.

      • PastryGoddess

        Hubs wins the internets

    • Stubenville

Does anyone else find the translucent Oscar statues kinda creepy? They remind me of the invisible woman statue at the science museum.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        they confuse me.

      • alula_auburn

They remind me of the mannequins who silently judge during Project Runway talking heads.

        • Courtney

          I can’t unsee that now.

      • alyce1213

Some production designer is gonna get creamed when they see how bad that looks on camera.

      • decormaven

I think they look like forms on a condom production line.

      • Pennymac

The remind me of microbiology experiments for some reason. Big, clear, giant amoeba germs.

      • Courtney

They’re even worse when lit up from behind.

    • PastryGoddess

      Woo hoo Jared!!

      • alyce1213

        Well deserved.

    • alula_auburn

It’s like Anne’s dress is trying to communicate in Morse code whenever she’s in the shot.
But yay boys who love their mamas.

    • Introspective

jared’s love for his mom in this speech made me spring tears as a mama myself…

    • MilaXX

      Jared’s mommy is pretty!

      • Frank_821

        Jared’s whole family is pretty!!!

        • MilaXX

True, he and Shannon could pass for twins.

    • Introspective

jared’s speech was really thoughtful. political. personal. made him very endearing. love.

      • Pennymac

I had severe feels. Teared up. For real.

      • decormaven

Glad he recognized all of those who have struggled with HIV/AIDS.

      • Qitkat

It was quite a phenomenal speech.

    • Nicholas

Hope everyone gets to speak for as long as Leto did.

    • alula_auburn

Wow, did the angle change or are the ghost Oscars multiplying? Maybe it’s less Hunger Games and more Walking Dead.

      • PastryGoddess

        They don’t die…they multiply

        • embers618

They’re like the cybermen – they’re upgrading people throughout the night!

      • ThaliaMenninger

That’s where all the losers go. Every time an award is given, you’ll see more ghosts. It’s really sad, actually.

    • Frank_821

Jim Carey should have worn a white shirt. but nice joke about being a nom

    • Introspective

omg did carey just have a fire marshall bill moment??

    • Courtney

I see the Edge wore his dress beanie for the evening.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Ha! Was just thinking that!

    • PastryGoddess

Does Jim inject plastic into his face?

      • Courtney

He’s probably about the best choice you could make for a live actor to introduce a tribute to animation.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Is this a tribute to animation in general or this year’s animated crop? Because things like this are why the show goes on too… damn… long.

      • sagecreek

Lots of old stuff here, and yes, I agree with you.

      • Introspective

just saw dumbo. so im thinking its like, the whole history of cartoons…

        • Daisy Buchanan

We’re totally not going to wrap this show up before 12:30, I’d bet.

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

            Pacific time

    • Sobaika

Unpopular opinion, but I’m loving Kerry Washington tonight.

      • Qitkat

Me too. I missed why this is unpopular.

        • tallgirl1204

I don’t care for the fabric of her dress, nor her hair which looks high-schoolish and messy, so maybe that’s the issue. But I don’t think I coulda gotten off the couch when I was this pregnant, so I realize this is unfair.

      • MilaXX

        I like it as well

      • procrastinatrice

Agreed, she looks stunning. I will admit that the dress looks better on video than in pictures tho.

    • Introspective

      the HAT is back!!!!

    • decormaven

      Here comes Pharrell’s hat!

    • PastryGoddess

The hat will not be tamed

    • alula_auburn

Oh, God, the ghosts are on fire!

    • MilaXX

And here’s the hat yet again Don’t care cause I like this silly song!

    • Nicholas

      What the hell is this.

    • alyce1213

Was that a long bobby pin holding Kerry’s dress together? (looks like she got the dress steamed backstage, which is a good thing)

      • Introspective

thank god. i was worried the wrinkles and wet spot would be front and center….

    • Introspective

but what are those sneakers he’s wearing??

      go lupita!!!! she’s getting down!!!

      • Frank_821

I love that Meryl was willing to get down

        • Courtney

I read somewhere long ago that the character she played in Mamma Mia is the closest to what she’s like in real life. If that’s true (and I kind of hope it is), getting down to Pharrell seems like just her style.

      • MilaXX

Are those the new Yeesus sneakers?

        • PastryGoddess

          I averted my eyes

    • MilaXX

      Go Lupita!

    • MilaXX

      Go Amy!

    • Courtney

      Meryl can shimmy.

    • matildarf

did someone slip something in my drink?

    • Pennymac

      Ohhhhh the earworm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Frank_821

this is more fun than the typical best song number

    • ThaliaMenninger

The tiny dancers are pretty awesome. Infectious song, little kids dancing… Gotta love it.

      • PastryGoddess

They’ll be auditioning for SYTYCD in the next few years

        • alyce1213

Or (heaven forbid) Abby Lee Miller.

          • PastryGoddess

No I think she starts with toddlers. These kids are too old for her

      • Courtney

They should have saved it for the 10:30 half hour when we all run low on alcoholic beverages and start to despair that the show will never end.

    • tallgirl1204

      June Taylor dancers-cam!

    • Daisy Buchanan

You know what would have been great? Having some of the ladies from “Twenty Feet From Stardom” participating in the musical numbers tonight.

      • EveEve

Seriously. Would have loved to have them kickin’ a loud and funky do-wop behiind Ms. Midler.

    • decormaven

      Wine break!

    • travelingcat

Loved that, now I’ll be dancing while putting laundry away on the break. :)

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Kerry Washington — Was she in Dreamgirls? I don’t remember her in it and she’s not in IMDB for it. I’m confused!

      • Adelaidey

Are you thinking of Anika Noni Rose?

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Well… is that what the orchestra was thinking? I was just unclear as to why Dreamgirls was the song they played when she came on stage…

    • PastryGoddess

I hate this Cadillac commercial. I will happily take extra vacation over working. Assholes

      • sagecreek

No kidding. That was beyond obnoxious.

      • SRQkitten

        Amen to that!

      • tallgirl1204

Everyone is trying to make the next “halftime in America” ad (See: Bob Dylan at the Super Bowl). And failing. You can’t fake Eastwood.

      • travelingcat

I cringe and change the channel everytime this smug advertisement is on. Happy to know I am in good bitter kitten company.

    • PastryGoddess

What the Holy Fuck is going on with that stage

      • Daisy Buchanan

        It’s like a Valentine’s bouquet from hell.

    • alula_auburn

the hell was that camera angle/spin about?

    • sagecreek

      Naomi Watts looks classy.

      • ThaliaMenninger

She’s another one who looks much better on camera than on the red carpet.

    • decormaven

Costume design- gotta be American Hustle.

      • decormaven

Amazing- figured Great Gatsby too far back for true consideration.

    • alula_auburn

The roses look disturbingly like some kind of bloody internal organs–is that supposed to be thematic with the Oscar ghosts? How. . .something.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Hey, I put my iPhone in my bra, Ms. Martin!

    • alula_auburn

      1. Great Gatsby seems like YEARS ago
      2. What is the print on her dress? Spikey flowers? Spiders? Crabs?

      • PastryGoddess

        sparkly spiky flowers

    • ThaliaMenninger

I want the costume designer who wore the credit card dress.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

That was for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

        • ThaliaMenninger

Yes, I know. I just want her to win every year.

    • alyce1213

      I’m 3 for 3, but they’ve been easy.

    • marlie

I’m just arriving in the lounge, but BAD GRANDPA got an Oscars nod?! I don’t care if it’s for makeup. WTF?!

      • Introspective

        exactly!!!! a wasted nomination indeed…

        • MilaXX

I’m not mad at the nomination. The movie may have been crap, but the makeup artist made Johnny Knoxville look real enough to fool people. They can now add “academy award nominee” to their resumes. They deserve the acknowledgement.

      • PastryGoddess

Lets all take a drink and forget that happened shall we?

      • SRQkitten

Yeah, like they were going to get an oscar. Not until the academy has a serious change in demographics.

      • Daisy Buchanan

I didn’t see the movie, but I heard it was actually quite good with makeup.

      • MilaXX

Because they made Johnny Knoxville’s makeup so convincing.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

The Lone Ranger — smattering of applause — “was that a movie?” wonders audience

    • alula_auburn

That seemed a foregone conclusion–did any Academy really want to be responsible for “academy-award winning film Bad Grandpa”?

      • Introspective

christ. that would have been the hearkening of the end of days.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

250 bucks for a makeup budget and they won an Oscar!

      • alyce1213

I love that! They’ve got to be so pumped.

    • alula_auburn

      Harrison Ford sounds half-asleep.

    • Introspective

harrison ford became a senior citizen overnight, no?

    • tallgirl1204

Harrison Ford looks confused. Has he had a drink or three?

      • Lisa_Co

Every time I’ve seen him recently he seems confused. I think he may have mild dementia:(

    • Pennymac

If I close my eyes I can imagine Harrison Ford saying “Get off my lawn” #agingvoice.

    • Stubenville

      Harrison Ford sounds ancient. Yikes!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Channing Tatum? WTH?!?

      • Daisy Buchanan

I simply do not get his appeal whatsoever. Blandy McBlanderson.

      • PastryGoddess

He needed to explain why those random kids were on the stage

    • Frank_821

I know some find him bland, but I think CHanning is yummy

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        I don’t think he’s bland, but he has that gay-for-pay look…

        • Frank_821

I am fighting an obvious comment on that one

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

            Oh, but don’t hold back… ;-)

          • PastryGoddess

Let it out, don’t hold it in. You’ll feel better :)

      • Sobaika

I don’t find him attractive but he’s very charming onscreen and one helluva dancer.

    • decormaven

That’s nice they recognize young talent, but when there are awards we never even get to see on camera, it’s a little unsettling.

      • Daisy Buchanan

They really need to follow the example of the BAFTAs: No filler, just the In Memoriam segment and everything else is the awards.

    • alyce1213

      Kim Fucking Novak!

      • PastryGoddess

        YAAAAAS!

    • Frank_821

wow! that’s a apiring you’d never expect. and it’s great they played the theme from Vertigo

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Kim Novak!

      • Stubenville

Never mind. I thought it was Sally Struthers.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          You did just go there…

    • UsedtobeEP

Matthew is less gaunt, I see. Good.

    • MilaXX

Aw just noticed the hem fail on Mathew

    • decormaven

Oh gosh please don’t make people do this crappy banter.

      • ThaliaMenninger

        Especially poor Kim Novak.

      • alula_auburn

        This is. . .awkward.

        • marlie

          It’s *painful.*

        • Daisy Buchanan

          Quite.

    • tallgirl1204

      I love her outfit.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Kim Novak came out of seclusion for this? I was hoping she’d be Best Picture.

“Get a Horse!” for the win. Edit: Or maybe not. Big Mickey is losing his grip.

    • PastryGoddess

Are they going to stop clapping? Where did they put them, in the parking lot?

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Ooh! I love it when Frenchmen win Oscars and get to give their acceptance speeches… Swoon!

      • MilaXX

I like when the lessor knows get their moment in the spotlight.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          So well put!

    • PastryGoddess

That guy is SHAKING up there. Poor thing

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

How many takes for MM to get the names right on The Wind Rises?

    • Sobaika

Aww!! These French Mr. Hublot people are too cute!

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        bien sur!

    • Adelaidey

I’m a little disappointed that The Wind Rises didn’t win, but it’s hard to deny that Frozen was absolutely gorgeous.

    • Courtney

Has anyone seen Frozen? It seems like half my sophomores are obsessed with it.

      • Adelaidey

It’s worth a watch. Visually stunning, and not your normal Disney Princess tropes.

      • Nicholas

Just took home $1B. Quite the juggernaut.

      • MilaXX

It’s cute and I’m not a big cartoon or Disney animated movie type of person. This one I like. In fact I wouldn’t mind going to a sing a long version.

    • Daisy Buchanan

What is going on with this stage design?

      • Pennymac

        Hideous

        • Daisy Buchanan

We’ve gone from Ghost Oscar to internal organs to A Tribute to Light Bulbs.

          • Pennymac

            LOL’d at that one.

          • another_laura

Personally, I’m mourning incandescents, so it’s appropriate.

      • alula_auburn

Clearly there was no Tim Gunn telling them to edit. It’s like six different (bad) concepts so far.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Maybe we should take bets on what will be next.

      • Courtney

As long as the blow up dolls stay away.

    • alyce1213

      Sally looks beautiful.

    • Frank_821

Sally kid of played it safe. that dress in an actual color would have be superb on her

    • Adelaidey

Weirdly, this is the first purely Disney movie to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

    • Sobaika

So… what is this montage? Socially conscious films?

      • Courtney

        Everyday heroes.

        • another_laura

Yes, Abraham Lincoln and Jackie Robinson! those everyday guys …. Sheesh

      • AlmostClassy

        Biopics?

      • alula_auburn

I giggled at that Freudian slips about “sometimes their films–I mean, their stories get MADE into films.” This “heroes” theme is. . .uncomfortable.

      • Daisy Buchanan

I guess it could be worse. Like last year’s tribute to the 10th Anniversary of “Chicago” winning Best Picture.

But this malarkey is why the show goes on too damn long. Pointless filler.

    • Daisy Buchanan

And another montage to send us into the four-hour mark…

    • decormaven

All films that don’t have a sequel

      • tallgirl1204

I’m confused– some of these are “real” people, and some of these are fictional characters that most people think of as real (like Atticus Finch)– ???

        • Sobaika

I think it’s just a generic ‘Heroes’ theme. It’s a bit weird but I will take any opportunity to see Will Smith as Ali again.

    • Stubenville

Sally Field looks great, but the black gown feels a little too somber IMO.

      • Pennymac

She is still channeling Mary Todd Lincoln.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

They say that Faye Dunaway was possessed by the spirit of Joan Crawford for several years after making Mommie Dearest. Maybe the same has happened to Sally Field.

          • Pennymac

Really? Creepy. Brings to mind Heath Ledger, too.

    • alyce1213

      They are a pretty couple.

    • Adelaidey

Emma Watson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt just look so cute and dashing and twee together that I want to die.

    • marlie

Emma Watson and Joseph Gordon Levitt would make an adorably stylish couple.

      • embers618

        Exactly what I was thinking

    • alula_auburn

JGL always looks so happy! (Or possibly high. Or both. Whatevs, I love him.)

    • Saturnine

      Sally looks gorgeous.

    • Courtney

JGL and Emma Watson make a cute picture. Some director should make that happen, if it hasn’t already.

    • another_laura

Ah, Hollywood in love with itself. Love that montage of “ordinary people” being heroes… I wish Sally’s dress had been dark red

    • Stubenville

      “Dickie Penny” really?

    • decormaven

      Hair product alert!

    • matildarf

I’d like to say it’s so fun to watch the Oscar’s with all of you!!!

      • matildarf

Jeez, I should have said watching the Oscars with Bitter Kittens is the BEST!

    • another_laura

Zac Efron – did they think this would get the young ‘uns to tune in? And oh yes, can you even read, dude?

      • sagecreek

        SNORF. Apparently not.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Very sweet song, this.

    • Saturnine

I usually get food during the musical numbers. Is that bad?

      • matildarf

        No.

      • Courtney

No more than my plan to wait for things like set design and cinematography to make my lunch for tomorrow.

      • alyce1213

        It’s not during this song.

      • another_laura

Not at all – I’m starting a load of laundry….

      • decormaven

No! Sustenance is important. Helps balance alcohol intake.

        • Saturnine

Yes. Well. That would help :-)

      • Qitkat

Where have all the memorable Oscars songs gone? That song from Midnight Cowboy during the Muppet commercial was one of the greats.

    • PastryGoddess

um is this Belle and Sebastian? I just came back from a wine break and am now getting sleepy

    • tallgirl1204

Who are these nervous teenagers and how did they get into the Oscars?

    • Daisy Buchanan

Okay, since clearly they’re cycling through every set design that was pitched for this year’s show… what should we look forward to come after the light bulbs?

      • Courtney

        Lasers?

        • Daisy Buchanan

I can’t remember what year it was – maybe the early ’90s – they had a musical number featuring dancing Oscars. It was deeply disturbing.

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Lasers of death? Like the Navy has now mounted on their ships? That could be fun!

          • Courtney

Imagine if that was what they used to keep people under time for their speeches…

            • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“And of course, my hair stylist Mona van Mona…” ZAP!

            • Courtney

Now that would probably bring in younger viewers.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“be more tea?” why does it sound like the Lady Chablis was involved in the development of this slogan? actually, it would be fun if the Lady Chablis was on the Muppet Show!

    • alula_auburn

      I don’t know about that Sudeikis beard. . .

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I have a few things I’d like to say about it: Yummy, yummy, yummy!

    • decormaven

Wow, plunging neckline on Kate H!

    • MilaXX

Thank you Kate Hudson for having some color on your lips.

      • Sobaika

She’s my pick for best dressed, I think.

        • decormaven

Is this the dress she wore on the RC? Didn’t get to see her.

          • Pennymac

Yes,but it had a cape on it at the time.

    • Sobaika

I’ve found gifs of Pharrell and the ladies getting down. Bless you, internet.

      • MilaXX

        I found a Lupita one.

      “The Lady in Number 6!”

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Get ready for tears!!

    • Daisy Buchanan

Well this will be a somber win. The lady in this film just died.

    • MilaXX

This dude is wearing a velvet, crocodile print jacket and I kinda love it!

    • Daisy Buchanan

“Hey, the show isn’t long enough yet. Let’s waste more time walking around in the audience!”

      • Courtney

        This bit did not work.

      • decormaven

This is such a fat waste of time.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Over an hour into this, and only one of the “big six” awards have been handed out. Ridiculous.

          • decormaven

This is why Mr. DM has retired for the evening. Filler needs to be cut ruthlessly.

            • Daisy Buchanan

Can’t say I blame him at all.

    • another_laura

Oh god, Ellen …. Oy vey, a pizza order

Ellen, please get back on the stage…

      • Courtney

I think if she’s going to be out in the audience, she needs to actually interact with the audience.

    • another_laura

      Bradley’s hair – yuck!!!!!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“20 Feet from Stardom!” Had it picked! Love this film!

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        DARLENE LOVE!

    • matildarf

Yay! 20 feet from Stardom. Loved it.

    • Sobaika

In documentary stuffs, I was hoping for Dirty Wars or The Act of Killing. Anyone see this backup singer film? Is it very good?

      • PastryGoddess

        I enjoyed it

      • MilaXX

        It is really good.

      • SRQkitten

It is! Although, honestly, considering the political serious nature of the other films, I’m a bit surprised it won.

        • Sobaika

Dirty Wars was a long shot – too political for the Oscars, but The Act of Killing is stupendous/horrifying. The Square would’ve been a great choice too.

      • Daisy Buchanan

It’s pretty good, definitely worth checking out.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Control room just went effin nuts!!

    • MilaXX

I love Darlene love. This may be the only documentary I saw out of this years nominees.

    • Pennymac

      Best acceptance EVAH!

    • Saturnine

      Wow. Pipes.

      • Daisy Buchanan

I saw her way way back on Broadway in the musical adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie” (Darlene played the Betty Buckley role, and Betty played the Piper Laurie role). It was awful and closed two days after I saw it. But it made me a Darlene fan for life.

    • Introspective

Darlene just took the oscars to CHURRRRRCH!!!!

    • Introspective

kevin is cunty. seriously. and i LOVE it.

    • Courtney

Did anyone catch the face Angelina Jolie gave when people stood to applaud?

      • sagecreek

No, do tell. Was it tacky? Please tell me it was tacky.

        • Courtney

It struck me as being side-eye. It’s a split second before the camera cuts away.

          • Daisy Buchanan

Dang, missed it. Hopefully there will be gifs!

      • another_laura

        No and I’m going back.

    • another_laura

Oh Kevin spacey – I just finished season 2 of House of Cards – good stuff

      • Saturnine

I loved the original; should I watch?

        • Pennymac

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

          • Saturnine

After Downton Abbey wrapped, I have nothing to watch–I think I will!

            • sagecreek

It’s very different than the original, but still worth a watch!

        • Introspective

park yourself immediately in front of netflix and binge watch both seasons STAT!!

        • another_laura

I loved the original, too! American version darker for sure. But just for Robin Wright’s cheekbones …..

          • MilaXX

I like the original as well. I think US season 1 was stronger than season 2 but still worth a watch

    • Pennymac

Kevin is certainly the star du jour, isn’t he?

    • alula_auburn

Not that I care too much, but did the control room lose Angelina Jolie?

    • Lisa_Co

Really disappointed in best documentary win. The Act of Killing or The Square should have won. Witness what is currently going on in Ukraine.

      • PastryGoddess

What does the Ukraine have to do with anything, the ballots have been in for almost 2 months now

        • Sobaika

I think she was talking about how the subject matter is rather relevant. And to be honest, will probably continue to be for a long time.

          • PastryGoddess

ah gotcha. I was taking things rather literally

    • Daisy Buchanan

Martin Short’s presentation to Steve Martin was great and it’s on youtube.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Claudia Cardinale is still with us? Amazing!

    • Pennymac

Can we give some real awards out soon?I have to work tomorrow…..

      • PastryGoddess

Yes It’s almost 10pm and they haven’t given anything worthwhile out

        • Pennymac

I suppose they are holding us all hostage so we don’t turn over to Walking Dead. Which has been boring lately anyway.

      • Courtney

Seriously. (Though I’m currently working from the theory that the snowstorm will mean no school/work tomorrow, but I won’t find out until 5am).

        • Pennymac

Ice for me. Sigh. Old man winter needs to calm the fuck down/

          • Courtney

Preach. We’ve missed 8 days already this year. I don’t think it’s been this bad since I was in high school.

          • marlie

            He’s overstayed his welcome.

          • tinyredlocks

            Word… (I’m in NJ)

        • SRQkitten

Some of us are in FL without that potential out. Groan. At the rate this is going it may be past midnight before they’re done.

    • Introspective

      snaps viola!

    • Daisy Buchanan

Get. To. A. Major. Award. Already.

(No offense to Best Foreign Film; I think this one should be held to the end.)

      • Sobaika

It really should be, it’s a pretty hefty award.

        • Daisy Buchanan

I know, it’s weird and insulting the way they bury it. I’d do the final four as Foreign Film, Documentary, Director, Picture.

    • decormaven

I guarantee there will be a musical presentation after this. This is one SLOW awards presentation.

      • Introspective

        you called it

      • PastryGoddess

        I’m taking a drink

    • another_laura

      EWAN!!!!!

    • Frank_821

Well it’s the winner of this year’s razzie for worst actress

      • Introspective

        SHAAAAAAADDDDDDEEEEEEEE

    • embers618

Was Amy Adams just checking her phone?

      • Introspective

shit, i would be, long as this show seems to be taking…

        • embers618

Well, and we’re all multi-tasking, obviously, but she’s there and she’s nominated! It’s her job to look good when the camera cuts to her!

      • PastryGoddess

        playing candy crush

        • Saturnine

          Curse that level 92!

      • Daisy Buchanan

        She’s reading TLo’s Twitter.

      • MilaXX

Can’t say I blame her. this show is long and boring

    • DagnyReardon

I’m bored. Having imaginary conversations of Angie meeting Laura in the ladies room.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

“her” really should be a movie about a fabulous drag queen.

    • MilaXX

Better look for Ellen, but the sneakers ruin it.

    • travelingcat

Have they announced best supporting actress and I missed it?

      • Courtney

        No

      • Daisy Buchanan

Nope, they’ve only given out one of the “Big Six.”

      • embers618

Nope. At this rate they’ll hit one “major” award every 2 hours.

      • Lisa_Co

No,not yet. Should be soon though.

        • Courtney

Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise. This show feels slower than usual.

          • travelingcat

            here, here!

        • travelingcat

Thanks, I was wondering if it was on a laundry break. Usually by now…

          • SierraDelta

Since I started watching, I’ve stripped the bed, washed the sheets, and put them in the dryer. At the next commercial/boring part, I’m going to get them out of the dryer and put them back on the bed. No this doesn’t seem long at all. ;-)

    • another_laura

Okay, off to start the laundry …..

      • marlie

This is actually a really great song!

        • Courtney

They’ve been nominated a few times without winning, yes?

          • marlie

They’ve been nominated once, but no, they didn’t win.

      • Introspective

        mine’s halfway thru!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

U2!!!! Loved them for 3/4 of my life. But go finish your album, guys.

      • marlie

I can’t wait for another tour.

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Supposedly the newest twist is that there are 2 albums. I am thinking we’re not getting a U2 album until Thanksgiving, and a tour in 2015.

          • marlie

I’d heard the same thing, but album closer to the spring/summer. Either way, I can’t wait.

    • MilaXX

      There’a hilarious picture of Cumbersnatch photo-bombing U2

    • sagecreek

For U2, this is a pretty pedestrian little ditty.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

        Unfortunately I agree.

      • Courtney

I liked “The Hands that Built America” from Gangs of New York better.

    • alula_auburn

If this ends up as a repeat of the Golden Globes, where Bono wins teaches us about racism and 12 Years a Slave gets almost shut out. . .

    • Courtney

I’m kind of sad that the Edge took off his sparkly jacket to perform.

    • Lisa_Co

The Great Beauty- Booooorrrrriiinng! A travesty that Blue Is the Warmest Color wasn’t eligible for nomination. But dven Wong Kar Wai’s The GrandMaster or the Georgian film In Bloom (neither made it to the final 5 ) were better. Still hope The grandMaster will win for best cinematography.

      • Daisy Buchanan

“Blue” is eligible next year (if France chooses to submit it). I’m pissed “Le Passe” didn’t get nominated.

    • decormaven

Standing O? Bless ‘em, they need to stretch. No disrespect to U2, but that was just a competent performance.

      • Daisy Buchanan

They probably just needed to get the blood in their legs circulating.

    • Frank_821

Frankly this is a surprising slow paced show. And it’s not just Ellen. It’s the whole feel. They should have had best supporting actress by now

      • Sobaika

I think they know it’s going to be a buzzworthy moment and are doing it to sustain ratings.

      • Pennymac

After the wonder of Tina and Amy at the Golden Globes, I kind of expected it. But this is exceptionally decrepit.

    • Nicholas

Best Supporting Actress supposedly up in 10 minutes.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Are you @#_(#&U%$P)@#($*&_ kidding me? It should be NOW. Or a half-hour ago. Oh thank god, more Ellen in the audience :(

        • Nicholas

Yeah, I feel totally redeemed in saying the only reason to watch the Oscars was Lupita.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Didn’t a few people die this year? Isn’t Bette Midler coiffed yet for her close-up?

    • decormaven

I hope so. I won’t make it too much longer if it doesn’t.

    • another_laura

Oh god Liza has no idea where she even IS …

    • alula_auburn

I would so be the person in the audience cringing when the host comes by.

      • Sobaika

        Gotta love Steve McQueen.

    • decormaven

      Ridiculously painful banter ensues

    • sagecreek

      This is getting EMBARRASSING.

    • another_laura

      Attention whore BINGO!!!!!

    • MilaXX

okay this picture taking is funny

      • Courtney

And now has gone on too long.

      • Frank_821

yes that at least is funny.

and now she dragged it out

    • marlie

I was all ready to hate that stunt, but it was sort of cute.

    • another_laura

      Cumberbatch photobomb!

    • decormaven

      Michael B!!!

      • Introspective

hes adorable! inexplicable collar spurs (?) and all! cause hes fine he pulls them off….

    • Daisy Buchanan

I have never been so close to turning off the Oscars and going to bed before it’s over.

      • Nicholas

        Wait until Lupita gets snubbed.

        (I’m just preparing myself.)

        • Daisy Buchanan

Anyone but Lawrence, anyone but Lawrence, that’s all I ask…

      • another_laura

Girl, for the first time in three years, I’m glad to be on the west Coast.

      • embers618

Yes. At this point I’m just holding out hope that they get to best supporting actress within the next hour. Then I’m done.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Seriously. Do they think people really want to waste five minutes watching them take selfies? Pretty sure they can do that at the after party. Give out some major awards already.

    • AnneElliot

Is that Lupita’s brother? He is ADORABLE.

      • Introspective

YES!!! thinking the same. and loving him!!!

        • AnneElliot

I love how he jumped into the photo with her.

    • Nicholas

      Shit, Hemsworth bringing it.

      • Introspective

that shade of purple is everything on him. living for it.

    • Courtney

I think I much prefer Chris Hemsworth when he’s not jacked up for Thor.

    • Saturnine

Love Charlize, but not liking the fit of that bodice up close.

    • Aurora Leigh

Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron are SO gonna get it on tonight.

      • demidaemon

Sean Penn is gonna be jealous!

    • alula_auburn

Oh, the ghosts are back. Is Hemsworth’s jacket purple? NGL, I love when people mess up the cue card/prompter.

      • Courtney

It looks maroon, maybe? Definitely not straight black.

      • MilaXX

        I’m getting maroon

    • decormaven

Are those plastic shoulder strips? Charlize, say it aint so!

      • AnneElliot

Yes, I think so. Do not like. It looks like they’re floating and not in a good way.

      • MilaXX

I believe they are illusion straps.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

They are, and it is tragic. You know Charlize, we know they are there, you know they are there, here is a thought..

Swarovski the heck out of those things, and instead of it being egads illusion straps, it is YAY BLING. :)

    • Pennymac

Eww. Back to the creepy transparent balloon condom oscar things…. Are those tanning lamps behind them?

    • Introspective

one of the current winners is as tall as the blowup dolls.

    • sagecreek

So, looks like Clooney didn’t show? I haven’t seen any cuts to him.

      • Introspective

he must have gotten the heads up on how much of a snoozefest this was set to be.

      • Courtney

He’s working in London, I think, and said he wouldn’t be at the ceremony.

    • Qitkat

Mr Qitkat has just informed me that he has never heard of Charlize Theron. WHO THE HELL AM I MARRIED TO?

      • marlie

A HS friend of mine just mentioned a couple of days ago that she had no idea who Tilda Swinton was. What kind of rock has she been living under?!?!?

      • sagecreek

Trying to decide between OMG and LOL…

    • Courtney

Oh, thank god. Solo presenter usually means big award.

    • Frank_821

      finally

    • Introspective

      ellen’s blowing it now

      • Saturnine

She really seems off–not usually like her; I wonder why?

    • SRQkitten

Finally! Is this the supporting actress

    • Introspective

      yaaaaaasssss finally!!!!!

    • marlie

OK, now everyone is flubbing their lines. Was the champagne flowing too freely too soon?

      • embers618

Or everyone is just totally bored out of their minds…

        • Courtney

Well, when they laugh at Ellen saying she added a scarf, you know the desperation level must be high.

    • decormaven

      Here it comes!!

    • PastryGoddess

      Finally!!!

    • another_laura

      FINALLY!!!! Best supp actress

    • Frank_821

I think I prefer Christophe with a beard. cute regardless

      • another_laura

        Very cute. Love him!

    • Courtney

What the heck just happened there?

    • PastryGoddess

      WTF just happened to camera

      • Daisy Buchanan

I was worried it was my cable.

    • Introspective

god lupita was really unbelievable in that role. i dont care what happens next. she WON the SHIT outta this category.

    • PastryGoddess

      shouty yes

    • decormaven

      Yes!!!

    • Frank_821

omg I love that clip from nebraska

    • Daisy Buchanan

      SCREAMS. With JOY.

    • Pennymac

      Yes!

    • Introspective

      OMG OMG OMG LUPITA!!!!!!

    • PastryGoddess

      Lupita Wins!!!!

    • Adelaidey

      DAMN RIGHT

    • alula_auburn

    • marlie

      YAY, LUPITA!!!

    • MilaXX

      YES!!!!!!

    • Frank_821

and she got congrats from Liza!

      • another_laura

You mean Liza grabbed her for some screen time …. ;-)

        • PastryGoddess

          You beat me to it

    • Courtney

Huzzah! Totally love her brother’s reaction, too.

    • UsedtobeEP

She is lovely. Good for her.

      • Introspective

absolutely breathtaking. so happy for her im tearing.

        • Pennymac

          Me too.

    • sagecreek

      OMGOMGOMG :)

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

      Love. Her. So much poise.

    • Saturnine

Good lord, great opening to an amazing speech.

    • PastryGoddess

I have something in my eye

      • Introspective

        Im bawling.

    • Sobaika

I AM CRYING. I CAN’T. BLESS YOU, LUPITA. BLESS YOU, MCQUEEN, BLESS YOU, EJIOFOR. THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL.

      • Qitkat

I haven’t even seen the movie, but I was so moved by her.

        • Sobaika

Watch it! You will not recognize her.

      • ashtangajunkie

Thanks for putting my current emotional state into words!

    • decormaven

      Fabulous!!!!!

    • Courtney

What a beautiful speech. The ending thought was so lovely.

      • SRQkitten

I really hope she has a long lustrous career ahead of her. She is a delight and pure class.

    • travelingcat

      Yippee!!

    • Frank_821

I pray she doesn’t go the way of so many first time best supporting actress winners. There’s a such an air to her

    • alula_auburn

      Gorgeous speech. I love her.

And. . .pure imagination from Willy Wonka? Really?

    • PastryGoddess

Did they play her off to “When you wish upon a star”?

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

        Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka

      • alula_auburn

Pretty sure it was “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka. I don’t get it.

        • Frank_821

Well if there’s 1 moment of pure wonderful fantasy this evening, it’s this

          • Saturnine

Nice, isn’t it? I wish her all good things.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

That was so amazing! And why are we going out on Willie Wonka music?

      • Wendi126

As I’m reading your comment I’m humming willy wonka and didn’t even realize it. Wtf

      • another_laura

They’ve been doing oscar-winning scores and songs all night, I believe.

    • Daisy Buchanan

And now we begin the ninety-minute wait until the next major award.

      • Introspective

i may not make it with yall to the end :(

        • Daisy Buchanan

The salute to the Wizard of Oz… In Memoriam… two more song performances… plus lots more Ellen bantering about pizza!

          • Pennymac

She’s not bantering, shes doing it. Awful. We need Tina and Amy.

      • Courtney

Which is tragic cause it’s true.

    • Introspective

ok off topic, this resurrection show is seeming creepy as hell.

      • decormaven

        Like minds!

      • alula_auburn

It looks a lot sunnier than the French version. . .not that that is hard.

        • MilaXX

I hope that kid is half as creepy as the kid in the French version

      • PastryGoddess

The book it’s based on “The Returned” is AH-MAY-ZING. The author was at the Baltimore Book festival last year. I picked it up afterwards and could not put it down.

I think its supposed to be a trilogy eventually

    • decormaven

How many plugs for Resurrection can ABC fit in?

      • MilaXX

I hope it’s as good as The Returned

    • Frank_821

WTF Ellen… ITS NOT FUCKING FUNNY. LET IT GO!

      • PastryGoddess

        I don’t think she can

    • DagnyReardon

Can someone put Ellen out of her misery please?

    • Courtney

We’re really going to continue this, producers?

    • decormaven

Oh crap. They’re going thru with this pizza gag.

    • AlmostClassy

Dude this pizza bit is really dumb.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I see pizza boxes and I count down to explosion of bitter kittens in 5, 4, 3, 2…

    • Introspective

Pizza grease + couture = shit show.

      • DagnyReardon

        Cringe worthy

      • another_laura

There’s a crowd of assistants picking up all of right now. Not a bite will cross the lips of those dieters until the show’s over

    • alula_auburn

      This is getting painful.

    • Nicholas

      Good night everyone!

    • Daisy Buchanan

What is this? Why are we watching people eat pizza?

      • decormaven

Because we haven’t had enough drinks not to care.

        • PastryGoddess

So obviously you need to have another glass

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I’m hungry but it may just be the inebriation.

    • Saturnine

Yeah, Harrison Ford totally has the munchies.

    • Elana Bryan

      Did Twitter break?

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I think that pic just about broke it…

      • MilaXX

        It hiccuped for a minute.

      • ThaliaMenninger

I ended up tweeting the damn picture three times because Twitter told me it was broken the first two. I hate being a stupid tweeter.

        • PastryGoddess

uh yeah I think I hit it 4 or 5 times. But it was up to over 770,000 retweets

    • another_laura

Gaaaah!! At least she’s asking Harvey Weinstein for the $$$$

    • Courtney

What an excellent time to head to the kitchen.

    • Introspective

wow. didnt know the academy was headed by a black woman! snaps! black girls rock in all kinds of realms…

    • Frank_821

The president has a nice dress

    • alula_auburn

The lights and the red roses look like a demonic beehive.

      I like the president’s dress.

      • AnneElliot

I’m making a mental note to incorporate “demonic beehive” into conversation ASAP.

    • Sobaika

Gotta say, I didn’t picture the Academy president as a black woman. Hurrah!

      • Introspective

        like minds…

      • MilaXX

        The first AA.

    • Introspective

      that museum looks creepy.

    • UsedtobeEP

I have to say, the pizza thing was painful, but those are some hungry people. OK Ellen, you win.

    • decormaven

A museum to contain all the magic moments. None of them from this show.

      • Daisy Buchanan

        *applause*

        • decormaven

          [curtsy]

        • SRQkitten

          Standing and cheering!

    • alula_auburn

Is Bill Murray okay? Did they make him run up a flight of stairs before presenting? He sounds winded.

    • UsedtobeEP

They should get Amy Poehler and Tina Fey next year. I love Ellen but her show is a better vehicle.

      • SRQkitten

        Oscar 911, STAT!

      • matildarf

Yes… I usually love Ellen but she’s missed the mark tonight.

    • Introspective

bill murray is giving me lecherous old man realness in this bit he’s doing with amy.

    • Pennymac

That rose backdrop looks like bleeding flesh…

      • PastryGoddess

        somethings can’t be unseen

      • UsedtobeEP

        Thanks…!

      • alula_auburn

It was scooped out of the ghost Oscars like pumpkin innards.

    • UsedtobeEP

      Aww, Harold Ramis.

    • Frank_821

      Oh very nice Mr Murray

    • Introspective

      2013!!!!!

    • PastryGoddess

Yay for the Harold Ramis shoutout

    • Introspective

bill does not know what year we are in!!! and its officially past his bedtime.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Poor Roger Deakins. Hopefully 12th time will be the charm.

    • Introspective

ok all of the spaniard men working on this film were adorbs. cuaron’s a cutie and so’s this cinematographer…

      • AnneElliot

I love how he thanked his teachers — “Not all of them, but some of them.” Oh, snap!

        • PastryGoddess

          SHAAAADE

      • Pepe Yapur

        Mexican, actually

        • Introspective

thanks for the clarification! they are very easy on the eyes, no matter where they are from.

    • bringbackbeatles

Bill Murray is the first one to sound natural presenting all night. And, yay to referencing the greatly missed Harold Ramis.

    • Frank_821

      4hours long Anna…an omen

    • Introspective

nice color on gabby! i like this look lots!

    • MilaXX

Somebody finally did Gabby a solid. She looks great! Gorgeous color and perfect fit.

      • UsedtobeEP

I was thinking the same thing. And she looks really happy, too.

        • MilaXX

That look when you know you look good.

      • PastryGoddess

        Theia I think

        • MilaXX

          Yes it is.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Gabby! That dress! Love it!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

So that’s 312 Oscars for Gravity, right?

      • decormaven

They’re racking up the technical awards.

        • Introspective

which that film unquestioningly deserves. it was amazing visually.

    • AnneElliot

Has Gravity NOT won any awards yet? I’ve lost count already.

      • Daisy Buchanan

It’s winning in categories it was supposed to be challenged in (sound mixing, sound, and editing). I think it takes picture at this point.

      • alyce1213

Only technical awards, which was expected.

    • alula_auburn

I’m hoping all the Gravity technical noms are pointing towards 12 Years a Slave getting Best Picture.

      • Adelaidey

        I think you’re 100% right.

    • bringbackbeatles

Gabby looks amazing! Fabulous color on her.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Working those pearls!

    • Courtney

Is Whoopi wearing the same dress that Julia Roberts had on at the Golden Globes?

    • another_laura

      Whoopi – geebus

    • PastryGoddess

What’s on Whoopi’s feet? And who let her steal Julia Roberts old clothes

      • MilaXX

        red sparkly shoes

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          Ruby, to be precise

    • Qitkat

Didn’t Julia Roberts wear that dress last year?

      • AnneElliot

It looks just like the one Julia wore to the Golden Globes.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Here it comes — Minnelis and Lufts for everyone!

    • alyce1213

Whoopi is wearing Jessica Roberts’ ugly frankendress.

      • Introspective

the shade in this comment is epic.

    • Adelaidey

      Oh, Pink’s in this?

    • Introspective

does liza minelli look like a real housewife of new jersey with that cheap dress and that ticky tacky blue streak in her hair? or is it just me?

      • matildarf

        Leave Liza alone!!! She’s awesome!

    • another_laura

Salute to wizard of Oz without J udy G arland’s voice?!?!?

    • PastryGoddess

      Hey pink!

      • AnneElliot

Pink sounds great, but I hate her dress.

        • PastryGoddess

I kind of like the ruby shoes tie in

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          It’s a great dress, if you’re Vera-Ellen and it’s 1958

          • PastryGoddess

and I am now laughing hysterically.

        • marlie

I love this dress! I think it’s from Elie Saab’s latest collection. But it’s way more conservative and demure than anything that Pink has ever worn.

    • Frank_821

That Michael Cpstella Lorna is wearing is surprising demure and structured

    • alula_auburn

I feel like this might be more moving if they hadn’t already wasted so much time.

    • Pennymac

Love Pink. But Why was she chosen for this?

      • Saturnine

        Beyonce was busy

ETA: I think Pink’s the only one who could come anywhere close to Judy (and by close, I mean within a few miles)

        • Pennymac

          Snort!

      • decormaven

Not sure, but this is a solid performance.

        • UsedtobeEP

I think because it is a deceptively hard song to sing. Needs a low range for a woman if sung in the right key, and she has a husky quality that calls up Minelli more than Garland, but it’s there. I didn’t love her phrasing, but she did, as you said, a solid job.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Thinking optimistically… because she could sing without auto-tune? :)

        • PastryGoddess

          point

      • Adelaidey

I love Pink too, but I would have preferred an actor with a lovely voice. Maybe Anna Kendrick or Jennifer Hudson.

    • DagnyReardon

      Judy rolling right about now

    • Courtney

That was every bit as unsatisfying as the James Bond tribute last year.

      • PastryGoddess

Shirley Bassey was unsatisfying???? Wha…? *faints*

        • Courtney

She was fine. As a tribute to the James Bond series, it was awful. It didn’t even really have a decent clip package.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Liza with a Z, that was oddly ungracious! “Oh, we’re standing now?!?”

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

I’m waiting for Bette. Once she’s belted out her bit, I’m out of here, even though I’m on Pacific time…

    • decormaven

I think it’s ironic that Tina Fey is not hosting, but she is getting better screen time in these Amex ads.

      • Daisy Buchanan

It’s like they’re needling us. “See what you could have had? She wouldn’t have wasted your time with a running pizza gag!”

    • Pennymac

You know whats fun about this years Academy Awards? Not a damn thing. You know whats great about watching this years Academy Awards? Being in the Lounge with the fabulous BKs.

      • AlmostClassy

I don’t often watch the Oscars, but figured I would this time. I have only stuck with it because of the BKs

        • decormaven

Truly. This has been a painful production.

      • Sobaika

True! I like this better than live-tweeting.

      • PastryGoddess

aww I agree, this is a shit show of a telecast. But made bearable because of all of you

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Ephelba on TV?

    • Frank_821

      ellen is wasting time

    • DagnyReardon

Blessed Mother of Jesus. Make it stop.

    • marlie

Oh, come the f*ck, ON, Ellen.

    • Qitkat

      Oh. My. God. Ellen.

    • Pennymac

      Butterscotch Gingersnap!

      • AnneElliot

The Oscars just got a tiny bit better because Benedict read all the production design nominees. But Jennifer’s dress reminds me of a lampshade. Unless she’s channeling the Gatsby-flapper look.

    • marlie

Jen Garner’s dress is a little lopsided, no?

      • Pennymac

Saw it on the RC, and thought it looked cheap.

    • ThaliaMenninger

So on the bright side, David Letterman and James Franco are all, worst Oscar host ever? Have you met Ellen?

    • Qitkat

So where is the damn tribute to Gone with the Wind?

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Maybe next year they could have a tribute to Hattie McDaniel for the 75th anniversary of her Oscar win.

        • Qitkat

          I do like that idea.

    • Courtney

I really hope the same woman has won twice for Gatsby, and we haven’t all been transported back to 8:30 in some terrible version of “Groundhog Day.”

    • Daisy Buchanan

      NOT ANOTHER F****** MONTAGE!

      • Courtney

And on heroes again. My god, we DID go back to 8:30. It really is hell’s version of “Groundhog Day.”

        • Saturnine

This is the Harold Ramis tribute.

          • Courtney

Not unless these are all films he happened to enjoy.

            • Saturnine

              true, true . . .

          • ThaliaMenninger

Would it have been so hard to throw three seconds of Ghostbusters walking around with their laser beams during that heroes montage? Meanwhile, it’s all so very MALE, you know? All these macho guys throwing around their swords and their guns and their, um, hoses. Harold Ramis’s heroes were schmoes, geeks, real guys, not Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sly Stallone.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Where’s the tribute to cowards? Or Hogan’s Heroes?

    • another_laura

Whoever you are take you damn hands out of your pants pockets!!!

      • alula_auburn

Yesssss. I didn’t want to say it about Kevin Spacey, but dude, you have not earned a hands-in-pocket allowance.

    • alula_auburn

OMG did someone at the Academy just read Joseph Campbell or something? This is not even a theme.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Are we getting to Andrew Garfield’s announcement of the next big superhero? If it’s not a heroine, I’ll be pretty annoyed.

      • marlie

They’re actually using the Oscars to do that?

        • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Not like they’re doing anything more interesting than that.
Also, I love TLo: “98% of heroes have penises, apparently.” I WAS JUST THINKING THAT ABOUT THAT MONTAGE.

          • marlie

Oh, ok. I thought there was going to be additional unnecessary wasting of time.

            • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

It was announced earlier so yeah, I think they are going to waste some more time.

    • decormaven

The real heroes are all of us sitting thru this crap

      • Qitkat

Just so we can post along with our fellow Bitter Kittens ;-)

        • Courtney

Misery, like calories, is halved when one is at a party. (Virtual counts, too.)

“We’ll get Pink to sing a tribute to Judy Garland!”

“We’ll get Justin Bieber to sing a tribute to Fred Astaire!”

We’ll get Beyonce to sing a tribute to Mickey Rooney!”

“We’ll get Bruno Mars to sing a tribute to Bette Davis!” # Oscarproducerideas

Running joke on the Uncles Twitter…..

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Dear Goddess! What would a musical tribute to Better Davis include?!?

        • Frank_821

Bette Davis actually did a musical number once in a film for the war effort

    • another_laura

Oh Hermione is so freaking bored.

    • Frank_821

What’s really stupid if they just had done a 4 min clip about different kind of heroes at the beginning of the show. it would have been fine. Like the 100 yrs of films they did 20 yrs ago

    • alula_auburn

It’s kind of sad when I can barely tell the difference between a super-self-important montage and a commercial for wee cans of Pepsi. (I think the commercial may have been better edited.)

      • Frank_821

the commerical was way betetr than any of the heroes tributes

    • marlie

I just tried to FF on my TiVo. It didn’t work.

    • PastryGoddess

I’m going to have to crack open another bottle of wine.

      • Saturnine

        Yes, you’d best do.

      • DagnyReardon

There’s not enough alcohol in my cabinet to make this pain go away.

    • Introspective

ROCKY ON BROADWAY???? what in the entire fuck?

    • Daisy Buchanan

Time for the tribute to those who passed.

      • marlie

I just hope they mute the applause-o-meter. That’s so tacky.

    • Introspective

      glenn close is well preserved.

      • decormaven

        Good call. In Memory now.

    • PastryGoddess

      is it time to cry?

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Raccoon time!

      • another_laura

At least now it’s for the right reason

      • MilaXX

Yep, this song kills me everytime

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Glenn speaking in past tense can only mean one thing… In Memoriam

    • Pennymac

Rolling. my. eyes. at. your. enunciation. Glenn.

    • DagnyReardon

      Glenn found Mrs. Danvers’ dress

      • Frank_821

well most of this evening has been depressing and funereal in feel

      • bitchybitchybitchy

How about a remake of “Rebecca” with Glenn as Danvers? I think that would be smashing. Who else shall we cast in my fantasy remake? Cumberbatch as Max de Winter? I’m adding Tom Hiddleston as Rebecca’s louch cousin, Jack.

        • ThaliaMenninger

Emma Watson as the second Mrs. de WInter who has no first name?

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I can see her-she’d be splendid.

        • DagnyReardon

Read “Gone Girl” Modern day rip off of Rebecca.

    • PastryGoddess

who do you think they’ll leave out?

      • alula_auburn

I rolled my eyes at Glenn’s awkward disclaimer.

    • Frank_821

at least there’s a mix of hollywood types

      • Courtney

Entertainment Weekly had an interesting article on how the montage is created.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Glad they’ve gone back to movie music for these…

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Deanna Durbin! Annette Funicello!

    • alula_auburn

Are people actually holding their applause so it doesn’t sound like a crappy popularity contest? That would be a nice change, although the real tell will be Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

      • another_laura

Naaaa, they just mute the house

        • alula_auburn

ah, so I can just pretend they aren’t being rude assholes.

      • marlie

I think they’re playing music instead of the live feed from the auditorium so that it doesn’t sound like a popularity contest.

      • Daisy Buchanan

They started cutting the audio out a few years ago, because of the applause-o-meter.

        • Saturnine

This is why we can;t have nice things.

    • PastryGoddess

So where is Bette Midler? I haz confuzeds

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        me too!

    • MilaXX

      Finally a respectful In Memorandum

      • Daisy Buchanan

Truly. I don’t know why they went to a live singing accompaniment a few years ago, it is always much more affecting with a simple movie score.

    • Saturnine

      Peter O’Toole. *sigh*

      • DagnyReardon

Peter and Audrey in the closet in How to Steal A Million.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

When I was a teen, my childhood best friend and I went to see “Becket”- I had a mad crush on Peter O’Toole, and she had a mad crush on Burton, so we were both happy….

      • UsedtobeEP

No kidding. I didn’t even know about Richard Griffiths.

    • Introspective

      bette!!!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

      Oh my. Bette and schmaltz.

    • PastryGoddess

How fitting that PSH ended the montage

    • Courtney

      Enter Bette.

    • decormaven

Oh no! Please don’t sing that song.

      • PastryGoddess

        Oh you know it’s happening

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

        Exactly!

      • Courtney

This is my least favorite of her works. We had to sing it in chorus when I was in 4th or 5th grade.

        • Introspective

OMG. this and the greatest love of all were the greatest thorns in my side as a grammar school chorus member.

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Y’ALL! Some of us were adults when those songs hit the charts…

            • Introspective

              tee hee.

        • Saturnine

My daughter sang this for her grammar school graduation and the entire chorus was SOBBING.

        • decormaven

I didn’t want to hijack the thread on her preshow outfit, but this. Exactly. I love Bette’s body of work, but “Wind Beneath My Wings” is my least favorite song from her catalog. It was overplayed and overperformed by too many people who couldn’t match the original performance. I would have loved something more nuanced from her at the Oscars, but the producers called the shot. I consoled myself by replaying her performance of “One More For the Road” from Johnny Carson’s last show, now captured on YouTube. That makes me tear up every time.

      • ThaliaMenninger

I was kind of hoping we were done with that song in the 80s after the hooker sang it to her pimp on Days of Our Lives.

        • decormaven

          Snap!!!

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

          You are making that up!

          • PastryGoddess

I actually don’t think she is.

          • ThaliaMenninger

I am not! Charlotte Ross’s character sang it to her pimp. She had a day job as a chanteuse at the club.

            • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

              Oh… my…. goddess…..

            • PastryGoddess

              you broke his brain

      • another_laura

Of course, because they were all “heroes” dontcha know. Oy!

        • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Finally! It all makes sense now!

      • Aurora Leigh

God, I would have thought they could have updated the instrumentation at least.

      • alula_auburn

I just recently saw “Krusty Gets Kancelled” so I keep hearing Krusty in my head.

That said, I find her current range less exhausting for this song than when she was younger.

        • Introspective

crying over here as a fellow simpsons fan.

        • kerryev

The Simpsons were what finally got me to watch the last hour of the show (in Tivo time). I was virtuously studying, just coming out to ffwd through the coverage every half hour, but eventually the Stonecutters’ song about rigging every Oscar night was all I could think.

      • matildarf

+1000… oh no. too late. dammit.
        Bette, you’re better than this.

      • EveEve

I feel bad for Bette Midler. She didn’t deserve that dress, or that song, or that arrangement. She is so fabulous and she looked as though she’d had all the life sucked out of her.

    • MilaXX

Love Bette, but she didn’t do a good job on that song.

      • Introspective

nope. not even a little bit. girl was stressing the shit outta her vocal chords for little results in the end.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

When I was a young pre-gay, I wished that I could sing as well as Bette Midler. As a middle aged man, I’m horrified to discover my dream has come true.

        • DeTrop

This is the best remark of the night. THANK YOU.

    • Frank_821

I am pleased they include the less obvious people like Richard Matheson. I forgot Miss ulie Harris recently passed away. So many talented people

    • Courtney

So who thinks it’s time for the obligatory “OMG how long is this show” joke when we come back from commercial?

    • Qitkat

      Well done, Miss Midler.

    • AnnaleighBelle

Shallow moment here: Bette Middler’s skin looks amazing – her face, her neck, even her hands. How is that even possible? She doesn’t seem to have the pulled tight frozen look, either.

      • DeTrop

That’s because she had ‘the work’ done well before this appearance. I saw her on The View right after some work and her face looked so tight, her eyes were like slits. Not a good look.

    • matildarf

way to cut a diva off!

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Well, dear BK’s. It’s been too, too marvelous! Enjoy your evening / morning! Mwah!

      • matildarf

        ‘Night Frank!

      • another_laura

        Mwah back at ya, frank!

      • ThaliaMenninger

        Turned into a pumpkin?

    • decormaven

They better start giving out Red Bulls, because this one is going for the record books.

    • Daisy Buchanan

I don’t care about Twitter. Please give out some major awards. *breaks down sobbing*

      • decormaven

        I feel like a hostage.

        • Daisy Buchanan

It’s like we’re Captain Phillips, trapped in the lifeboat. WHERE ARE THE SEALS TO RESCUE US?

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I am the captain now-we are not giving out any more awards until I say so!

        • Saturnine

          Stockholm syndrome, without the affection.

      • Courtney

        Goldie doesn’t have an envelope…

      • another_laura

There, there, Daisy, have another martini.

    • decormaven

      They broke Twitter. Oh vey.

    • Daisy Buchanan

If you haven’t seen “Philomenia,” it’s so worth it. Judi and Steve are great together.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

They are-and that film is absolutely heartbreaking, infuriating, and humbling-and funny

    • Pennymac

How can you not luv Goldie? She just stays weirdly forever adorable.

    • Adelaidey

Awww, Goldie Hawn’s dress matches Kate Hudson’s!

    • another_laura

Oh my freaking god Goldie ,,,, scary

      • sagecreek

She finally crossed the “too much surgery” line, didn’t she? So sad.

        • Introspective

as in dont even try to blink boo. it aint gonna happen.

      • DagnyReardon

        Cat Woman

        • Daisy Buchanan

          Joyce Wildenstein?

    • marlie

No shade (seriously), but why is Goldie presenting an award?

    • Aurora Leigh

What is on John Travolta’s head?

    • Sobaika

      John Travolta is terrifying.

    • Saturnine

It is 11:00 EST. Two major awards have been given out. Will this go into the wee hours?

      • Daisy Buchanan

        I’m guessing 12:15 a.m.

    • Daisy Buchanan

What crawled onto John Travolta’s head?

    • Introspective

i think john travolta has earned the right to be called lady clairol too.

      • Pennymac

You guys really need to stop being witty. Its keeping me from giving up and going to bed.

        • decormaven

          Solidarity! Onward into the breach.

        • Courtney

You can’t quit on us NOW.

    • PastryGoddess

      WHY. DON’T.THEY.HAVE.ENVELOPES

      Whhhyyyyyy

      • Daisy Buchanan

This is the awards show version of being on the rack.

    • DagnyReardon

It’s been fun kittens, but I must take leave with my snark. Until tomorrow.

    • marlie

      SO. MANY. TRAVOLTA. JOKES.

    • ThaliaMenninger

What is wrong with Idina Menzel? She sounds wretched.

      • sagecreek

        Maybe she’s sleepy.

      • PastryGoddess

Ok so I’m not the only one who thinks so.

        She sounds terrified

      • Courtney

She didn’t get any of the pizza. Low blood sugar.

      • Introspective

shouty as all hell. its like girl, you have a mic. calm down.

      • SRQkitten

Why did she change out of that lovely green dress? What is up with that?

      • marlie

Apprently, this is “Adele Dazim.” At least, that’s how Travolta butchered her name.

        • ThaliaMenninger

Ah, that explains it. Understudy Adele Dazim went on when Idina got the flu, so they all applauded the plucky understudy, even though she was terrible, because, you know, she was plucky.

          • AlmostClassy

She’s already gotten a Twitter account

      • decormaven

        Not her best performance. Pity.

      • Nikko Viquiera

I did a youtube marathon of Idina’s live performances and she sounds consistently bad. Maybe it’s overconfidence. I don’t know.

    • another_laura

I know he’s not the brightest bulb, but he really should have practiced the poor woman’s name.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Seriously. What was that coming out of his mouth?

        • MilaXX

I thought some beside Indina was singing cause no way were the syllables coming out his mouth even close to her name.

          • Daisy Buchanan

            Same!!!

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I know – I knew he was talking about Idina Mendel, but what the hell did he say because it wasn’t her name.

      • alula_auburn

I couldn’t even tell what he said. Adelina Malnzlio?

    • PastryGoddess

Girl you did NOT hit that note

    • Daisy Buchanan

Everyone, let us all say thanks the the fifth song was disqualified. Of course, we haven’t made it to the fourth yet (unless I dozed off and missed it).

    • Courtney

      ENVELOPES!!!

    • PastryGoddess

      It’s an envelope miracle

    • decormaven

Yep, think a lot of things are blowing now.

      • Pennymac

        So much blowing.

        • Daisy Buchanan

          “Let It Blow”?

          • PastryGoddess

            HA!

          • Pennymac

Or do a lot of blow. It’ll give you energy to get thru this horrible affair.

            • Daisy Buchanan

              *laughs*

            • Courtney

To quote the Animaniacs, “We’ll die trying. Or try dieing. Or do some tie-dying!”

            • another_laura

It would take Wolf of Wall Street mountain of blow

        • AlmostClassy

          And sucking. Sucking hard.

        • ThaliaMenninger

No wonder Travolta is there. (Thank you. I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.)

          • Pennymac

            hahahahahahaaa!

          • PastryGoddess

            cannot breathe…stop…hahahaha

      • Qitkat

You guys! This is why I’m staying with you.

      • Frank_821

Sadly in those 60 seconds Jamie was funnier than Ellen all night

        • PastryGoddess

          TRUTH

    • MilaXX

Just read that Lupita is only the 7th WOC to win and Oscar. I think the last one was Halle Berry, but don’t quote me on that bit.

      • Introspective

i think you are right on the point about halle.

      • marlie

        Didn’t Octavia Spencer win?

        • Introspective

right!! how could i forget! i think because i was trying to erase the help as a film entirely from my memory…

      • Daisy Buchanan

        Octavia!

      • PastryGoddess

        Halle
        Monique
        Octavia
        Lupita
        …I think that’s right

      • SRQkitten

        Didn’t Mo’nique win for Precious?

        • MilaXX

          Apparently I skipped a bunch

          • SRQkitten

Your point is still valid, not enough WOC in roles that get Oscar love.

I only remember Mo’nique cause that role was so tragic.

    • alula_auburn

The set design is trying to blink out an SOS to be put out of its misery.

    • Daisy Buchanan

I did fall asleep during one of the songs, ha ha. I thought we were only at three performed so far.

      • PastryGoddess

the 2nd song was that one they performed sitting on the stage and whispering to each other

        • Daisy Buchanan

That’s the one I forgot. Oy.

        • Trickytrisha

The sound quality of the vocals has been abysmal.

        • PastryGoddess

I just realized that was Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. Still not sure why she was channeling Belle and Sebastian

    • decormaven

Why is Jessica Biel giving out the music award?

      • Introspective

why is she here is my question.

        • marlie

          Why is she ever there?

      • Daisy Buchanan

Um. Her schedule was open? :)

      • another_laura

She has the best publicist in the biz

    • Introspective

sad for pharell and his hat. i loved happy the best.

    • Adelaidey

      EGOT!

    • alula_auburn

LOL, I forgot EGOT is a real thing.

    • Qitkat

      That’s a big ass bow!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Bono, go finish your album now.

    • sagecreek

      Too twee.

    • MilaXX

Okay the Frozen folks are cute!

      • Introspective

love their genuine happiness. infectious spirit indeed.

      • Courtney

        Livened things up a bit.

      • Nikko Viquiera

And the guy is from my home country! Shout out to all Filipinos! yay. But really, after months of overplaying that song, very well deserved.

    • Daisy Buchanan

So we have: Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Actress, Actor, Director and PIcture left. Any thoughts on them getting those wrapped up by midnight?

      • Introspective

unless hell starts to resemble the set of frozen, probably not.

      • Courtney

I’m sure there’s at least one more clip montage and several pointless bits of audience hopping to go, too.

        • Daisy Buchanan

It’s a tribute to anti-heroes! Heroic pizza deliverymen!

    • leahpapa

Finall,y someone got Idina Menzel’s name right.

    • Saturnine

OK. So what’s the accepted protocol for rousing guests that have fallen asleep on the (admittedly very comfortable) couch? I’m reaching the end.

      • ThaliaMenninger

Start making coffee. “Want a cup before you go?”

      • Daisy Buchanan

Start blasting the score to “The Monuments Men.” It’s painfully bad and will send anyone running to escape it.

        • Saturnine

          Ha!

      • Trickytrisha

Depends on whether you want them to come back or not. An accidental splash of water works.

      • PastryGoddess

        Pot and spoon…or cymbals

    • marlie

According to the Twitterverse, they forgot Dennis Farina in the “in Memoriam.”

      • GillianHolroyd

Adored him. How could they not include him??

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I repeat myself: if the producers had axed Pink, cut some of the supposedly funny bits by 50%, they could have expanded the In Memorian segment to include more people who deserved to be there.

    • MilaXX

wait didn’t it come out that Chobani uses or used GMO’s?

    • lillyvonschtupp

I got teary when Lupita won. All hail Queen Lupita! !!

    • Introspective

      kevin is SHADY BOOTS

    • AlmostClassy

Jesus Christ, the pizza joke is not funny, stop trying to make fetch happen dammit

      • Introspective

i think that’s the look on everyone’s faces. even the ones who ate from the pizza.

    • alula_auburn

OMG please let this pizza bit die.

    • ThaliaMenninger

OH MY GOD. More pizza idiocy. More time wasting. I AM GOING TO DIE.

    • Pennymac

      Toga, toga, toga…

    • Sobaika

      I <3 Kevin Spacey.

      • PastryGoddess

        He does bitchy so well

    • ThaliaMenninger

By the way, I think Penelope looks lovely. The Regency thing suits her.

    • decormaven

Somebody please stop the pizza bit. I love Ellen, but it’s waning fast.

    • PastryGoddess

Yes to 12 years a slave

    • Frank_821

Hey fellow BKs and PUFs. I’m siging out. My net feed can’t keep up with all the comments

      • Daisy Buchanan

        Take care, good night!

      • PastryGoddess

Good night we will keep up the snark

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

For some reason all I want is for Penelope to say, “Look at my dress, isn’t it a confection?”

      • Trickytrisha

Yeah, but you wouldn’t be able to understand her.

    • Introspective

well deserved ridley. that dialogue was riveting.

    • Sobaika

YES John Ridley! He was so eloquent and moving at the Spirit Awards.

And he has a hot wife.

      • AnneElliot

And his suit’s awesome. One of the best dressed of the night.

    • decormaven

      Yay for John Ridley!

    • Daisy Buchanan

      Yay for Spike!

Glad he gets to be limited to :45 seconds so that we could get all those hilarious pizza bits in earlier.

    • Saturnine

Well, I can’t remember enjoying an (otherwise boring) Oscar telecast more– thanks to all the BKs. Signing off; have a lovely evening everyone!

      • Introspective

im staying the course. although i believe you are making the wiser choice by far.

        • Pennymac

Agreed. I’ve already past the holy shit I’ll be tired in the morning point. whats an extra 30 minutes or so?

      • PastryGoddess

It was lovely chatting with you. g’nite

    • ThaliaMenninger

Even Ellen looks bored and miserable.

      • decormaven

Send that woman a muffin basket. Whoever wrote these bits – truly cringe worthy.

        • PastryGoddess

          Hopefully not Bruce Vlanch

    • AlmostClassy

Did Ellen prepare at all for this? Everything feels like she thought she’d just improv it so there’s no timing or actually written jokes

      • PastryGoddess

she claims she did. I’m not so sure

      • another_laura

Looks like they were relying too heavily on the pizza thing, which is A BOMB!!

    • Trickytrisha

Yawn worthy so far, but I want some of Lupita’s lipgloss too. Anyone know the brand?

      • Daisy Buchanan

I think way way way earlier someone posted info about her makeup person which might have had info about that. It was so many hours ago though.

      • Daisy Buchanan

I heard this morning it was Chanel Melodieuse.

    • Courtney

I think I’m off to watch the last bit from the comfort of my bed. G’night to all the BKs who held out this long. It’s been a blast, even if the show was not.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Sweet dreams (hopefully not of pizza).

    • another_laura

You know I actually like that the orchestra is playing so many lovely scores tonight. Very pretty music!

    • PastryGoddess

*sigh* Sidney Poitier. I’m not ready for him to go just yet

    • Introspective

      sidney poitier is a presence.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Sidney Poitier is the definition of class.

    • another_laura

Oh no Poitier is just too old now. I’m really sorry to be saying that but man….

      • somebody blonde

He looks damn good for 87. I’ll be honest, I think he looks healthier than Bill Murray right now…

    • another_laura

      What? Cuaron?!?? Shocked

      • PastryGoddess

        Cuaron for Director
12 years a slave for Best Picture

        • ThaliaMenninger

          I think so, too.

        • alula_auburn

          I hope so!

    • Pennymac

Wow. I guess I’m going to have to see Gravity after all.

      • another_laura

A lot of it is stupid but the visuals are amazing. Got to see it on the big screen.

        • golden_valley

Dialog sucks; story is a bit trite, but you still gotta see it.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

It’s truly great, but it’s best seen in a theater in 3D, so you better hurry, it’s already VOD. However it’s still not 1/3 the movie Children of Men was.

        • Introspective

children of men remains one of my favorite films period. im personally considering this a cumulative award for cuaron’s body of work, including that gem.

gravity, w/all its technical merits, had little to no effect on me, while children of men, all these years later, still stays with me.

          • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Children of Men hasn’t aged a day. It should have won best picture and best director over Scorsese and the other nominated films/directors. It wasn’t just the best of 2007, I think it is one of the ten or twelve best films this century.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Try to see a bargain show-I paid full price and was distinctly underwhelmed.

    • Daisy Buchanan

Hopefully they won’t cut Cuaron off this time like they did during Editing.

      • golden_valley

They probably knew he was going to get director, so it wasn’t a big deal to cut him for editing.

        • Daisy Buchanan

I think I’d be okay with that if they hadn’t tormented us with this recurring pizza business.

          • sagecreek

Not only was it annoying and cringe-worthy, but now I kinda want pizza. Those rat bastards.

            • Daisy Buchanan

Send the bill for your order to Ellen ;)

    • decormaven

Wow! Gravity got Best Director. Was pulling for McQueen.

      • SRQkitten

Yes, am still hoping that 12 yrs will win best picture.

        • sagecreek

Me too, but at this point it looks like a Gravity sweep.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I expected Cuaron to win-he’s won most best director awards this season.

    • lalagigi

      Yeah, Alfonso!

    • UsedtobeEP

What did he just say? I was drifting when everyone laughed.

      • Daisy Buchanan

“Did anyone understand why the host was delivering pizza?”

      • altalinda

The wise guys at Warners. I mean, the wise people.

      • PastryGoddess

Even he didn’t get the pizza joke

    • ThaliaMenninger

Every time he talked about the wise people, I thought he said “white” people, and I was like, yep, that’s Hollywood.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I know this is a big party for the industry, but if they had cut Pink’s massacre of “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, cut Ellen’s shtick by 50%, this show could have been over by now.

      • sagecreek

And the meaningless montages. Don’t forget them.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Word- did the world really need another montage????????

      • Daisy Buchanan

Yup, do what the BAFTAs do: Only montage is for those who passed, and other than that, it’s award after award. You don’t see Stephen Fry running around taking selfies with Prince William between categories.

        • PastryGoddess

that..would actually be kind of cool

          • kittentoes

            I would actually watch that.

      • MsC

I love Pink. And she should have nailed this song. But her lack of breathing control ruined her performance. She had to stop in awkward places to take a breath and it killed the phrasing/pace.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m sure Pink wanted to do her best for that song-it’s such an iconic number.

          • MsC

Yep. That’s why I felt bad that I couldn’t love it. She has the voice for it and started out great.

    • PastryGoddess

      Dear Oscars,

next year charge double the amount for commercials and have half as many. Then you can pay your host(s) enough money to give a damn and move this show along

      • ThaliaMenninger

And for god’s sake, give Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the hosting gig.

    • Trickytrisha

      OMG DDL!

    • Pennymac

Daniel Day Lewis. Sigh. I WILL find you……

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I just told Mr. B3 that Daniel is my other husband. He smiled.

    • lalagigi

      Cate for the win!

    • Pennymac

      Yay, Cate!

    • decormaven

      Yay Cate!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Very happy for Cate-she really inhabited Jasmine, and made that film worth watching.

    • ThaliaMenninger

So far, in the clips for nominated actresses, we’ve seen Amy Adams doing a British accent when she’s American, Cate Blanchett being American when she’s Australian, and then there’s Meryl, pulling out the Okie. So maybe half the Oscar battle is doing an accent which is not yours.

      • AnneElliot

Also Judi Dench with the Irish accent in Philomena.

    • Introspective

      love cate so much.

    • Daisy Buchanan

According to the Washington Post alert, Best Actress went to “030214.” I take that to mean the intern in charge of push notifications fell asleep on his keyboard.

      • PastryGoddess

even he is tired of this broadcast

      • Pennymac

        Epic!

      • decormaven

        He didn’t get any pizza.

    • Aurora Leigh

      THE WORLD IS ROUND, PEOPLE!

    • decormaven

Yay! The world is round! Yes for women centered films.

    • Sobaika

Meh. I love Cate Blanchett but this year’s pack of Lead Actress nominees wasn’t my favorite. Watching Cate was like watching a master technician at work, whereas Judy Dench just was.

She gives a great speech though.

      • Daisy Buchanan

Amen. I felt like the lone wolf on this category (and I thought the film had a lot of problems).

      • another_laura

This year it was all about the guys, for sure.

    • SierraDelta

Cate! Wonderful, witty, inclusive. I’ll even ignore her blah dress.

    • lalagigi

I don’t usually love Matthew in films, but he deserves to win this.

    • PastryGoddess

      Da Fuq did her makeup

    • Introspective

jennifer? is everything ok girl? why do you seem to have beef with people in the audience we cant see while youre on stage presenting at the OSCARS????

      girl bye.

      • another_laura

Poor judgment, young lady. Go sit down..

      • Sunraya

And she was talking during Matthew M’s speech. Either her fame as a goofball has gotten to her head or she drinks too much.

    • PastryGoddess

Jennifer sit DOWN before you fall down

    • decormaven

Yes! Party at the Moon Tower!

    • PastryGoddess

      Alright, Alright, Alright MMC

    • Sobaika

Aww boo. I was really rooting for Chiwetel.

Matthew had a spectacular year, for sure. Hope his speech reigns in the douche.

      • Pennymac

Nope. The douche is strong with this one.

    • Pennymac

Whew. Just one more, Best Picture, right? Longest night ever!

      • PastryGoddess

He’s like the male version of Gwyneth Paltrow.

        • Lucía Gavello

He should have said “IT CAME TRUE” at least Hattaway was obnoxious but didn’t go on FOREVER

          • Evan

I like Hathaway, but actually she did kind of go on forever. Or what felt like forever anyway.

    • Daisy Buchanan

“Charlie Laughton”? I mean… that seems a bit presumptive.

    • Introspective

ok mcconathing has gone overboard on the crazy.

    • PastryGoddess

My goodness he is orange. And that stage lighting isn’t helping

    • Aurora Leigh

I like to imagine that MMC is actually Rusty Cohle.

      Now, Darryl awaits….

      • Pennymac

        On demand tomorrow

    • MilaXX

I think all my guesses were correct. I really should have placed a bet somewhere. I could have used the cash.

      • alyce1213

Told ya. I was very accurate tonight too, but I think this year’s awards were easy to pick. No surprises for me.

      • EveEve

It was the most predictable year ever. I suspect you wouldn’t have made much after things got divided up.

    • DuBey2

Elie Saab: Great job on Pink’s ruby red gown! And I NOW am a Pink fan. What a perfect tribute to WofOz she did and the lovely footage of JG running behind her…

    • MilaXX

Twitter has no chill, There’s an account for Adele Nalzeihm or whatever it was John Travolta called Indina Menzel

      • Daisy Buchanan

I wish I could take credit for this, but I came across the best comment on Travolta’s screw-up on another site:

“But I have to admit, that was a clever move by his publicists. Nothing dispels gay rumors more quickly than mispronouncing Idina Menzel’s name at the Oscars.”

    • Sobaika

AMERICAN HUSTLE WON ZERO AWARDS, WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!!

      • demidaemon

        GLORY BE!

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I can’t even tell you how happy I am about this particular outcome. I know a lot of people like JLaw but I just can’t with her, especially after that moment at the SAGs when I felt like the entire cast with the exception of Amy Adams were incredibly rude, egotistical and disrespectful in the press room. Hate to tell you guys but the media stuff is part of the job. You don’t get to walk out of the room (I’m looking at you Bradley Cooper) or make fun of the questions. Amy was the only one who acted with any class, and I have since felt like she is not a fan of the other cast members. I suspect if I am right, she will be very glad when the Hustle pole dance is over for good. :)

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I didn’t see or read about the cast of AH after the SAG awards. My reservations about AH were that Russell was just so in love with the characters that he and the cast created that he forgot about, or didn’t care that he didn’t have much of a plot. Lots of moments that must have been hugely fun for the actors to do, but I want a bit more from a film.

    • demidaemon

Well, if I was abetting man, I would have made a lot of money tonight. My picks were as follows:

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave
      Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
      Best Actor: McCougnahottie
      Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto
      Best Supporting Actress: LUPITA

So, I would have swept the big awards. GOOOOOOOOOOOO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Me too! All my picks were spot on.. :)

    • GinnyThePainter

Award show writing teaches us that cliches about movies can stir our souls, invigorate our spirits and reflect the essence of what it means to be human. They make us laugh, cry, think, and in the end, they make us wonder why the fuck the Oscars can’t hire decent writers who have some original freaking thoughts.

      • unbornfawn

        touche

      • kittentoes

Sometimes I feel like many of the people excitedly watching the Oscars prefer to have their thoughts clichéd, for easier digestion.

      • ThaliaMenninger

“Award show writing teaches us that cliches about movies can stir our
souls, invigorate our spirits and reflect the essence of what it means
to be human….” If you’re male. Very, very male.

    • kittentoes

I didn’t watch much. Was there any singing that was good, and not screeching or whispering?

      • Aurora Leigh

        No.

      • Shawn EH

Yes, I thought all the musical numbers were great. Karen O, Pink, Idina Menzel (no matter how Travolta pronounces it) all did very charming, straightforward numbers with their great voices. Bette Midler did the memorial; maybe only the Pharrel number was sort of disposable.

      • ThaliaMenninger

Pharrell’s was the only one I wouldn’t mute if I had to watch the show again.

    • DeniseSchipani

Heh. All my predicted picks were spot-on too,and I didn’t see a damn one of these movies (I don’t get out much; too much good TV and not enough good babysitters). I agree, though, that if i’d written that award-show script back in HIGH SCHOOL my amazing English teacher (RIP Ms. Richman) would have torn it up and thrown it back in my face.

    • Judy_J

Does anyone know what happened to George Clooney? Not only was he absent, but he wasn’t even mentioned until the director of Gravity accepted his award. All the clips from the film just showed Sandra Bullock, too. Did he do something to offend? I just thought it odd.

      • Daisy Buchanan

He didn’t really have any ponies in the race. “Gravity” wasn’t really ‘his’ film and “August: Osage County” wasn’t up for Best Picture (praise the lord).
