God bless her. She’s got a shtick and she is gonna ride it, all the way to the bank.

    • decormaven

If you’re going to bump it, bump it with a trumpet!

      • mewesley

Did you know that Oscar nominee June Squibb originated the role of the stripper Electra who sang that song in “Gypsy?”

        • SketchyCat

Ya gotta’ have a gimmick! :)

        • decormaven

Oooh! I knew I loved that woman- thanks!

        • alyce1213

Really? I had no idea!! The strippers are some of the funniest roles in all musical comedy.

        • Shug

That is a fun fact if I ever heard one.

    • Barb Ray

A strategy that has worked out quite well for one of my idols; Dolly Parton. (Not to diminish Ms. Parton’s profound musical talent).

      • cocohall

I completely agree. She is managing her brand perfectly. And she is funny. I think she sees her body and face as something she was given like a great voice and she is just making the most of it. I have no problem with her style. She knows what she is doing.

    • BayTampaBay

Gotta admit the dress is an impeccable fit, like she was poured into it. I say she looks great, bit then again, I am a sucker for Roberto Cavalli.

Did Rachel Zoe style this? It looks like her work.

  • gabbilevy

This somehow feels even more literally mermaid than normal. Call me when she does something worth talking about.

  • jw_ny

Just once I want to see her put style ahead of sexy when it comes to her RC appearances.

    • Gatto Nero

      Does she know how?

  • Sarah

I fully expect this silhouette (and don’t mind it on her) but this is not the best iteration of it we’ve ever seen. The non-color is sad because she usually isn’t afraid of pretty colors, and the wrinkled/pintucked/beaded multi-textured nature of the whole thing is just too much.

    • Barb Ray

At first I thought something similar, about the color, but then I wondered if maybe she was keeping it a little subdued (for her) so as not to pull focus on a night that wasn’t so much about her. For the non-oscar attendees of these events, I can’t help but think they look sadly try-hard when they pull out all the stops.

  • deelup

    Of course.

    • Ginger

That is exactly what I was scrolling down to say myself.

    • Evan

Jinx! I should have scrolled down first.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Took the words out of my mouth.

    • Jessica Freeman

      Nothing left to say.

    • Danielle

      Beat me to it!!

    • Janet B

Should have scrolled down before posting.

  • Sobaika

Hey, it’s her thing. Something about this entire look feels almost lacquered. Like I’m at Madame Tussaud’s.

  • JauntyJohn

On the one hand, she does her thing and she does it well.
    On the other hand… **yawn**

  • hughman

She’ll be back to perform right after she brings you your shawarma.

    • webslice33

it’s kinda racist but it cracked me up lol

  • webslice33

i must say she looks gorgeous..but she is so predictable…maybe wear a Marchesa or a Pilotto?

    • Evan

Oscar de la Renta? And I’m not just saying that because she’s latino.

      • alyce1213

I’d love to see that. Up a million points in class.

    • demidaemon

I can’t get behind using either of those designers. Enh and double yuck, respectively. I much prefer Evan’s suggestion below. Or maybe some Carolina Herrara.

  • ballerinawithagun

How do you make this woman look bad?

  • Evan

  • Laura Renee

Almost completely love it for what it is — but those connecting pieces under her breasts, to the skirt portion, are weird and throw me off. But I really love the view from the back (especially her hips).

  • nannypoo

I really don’t like her schtick. She looks trashy. On the other hand, she manages to squeeze it all into these skin-tight dresses better than most people can so I suppose she will never stop. And I don’t have to look, so it’s all good.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

This is cutting her in odd places. I expect much better T and A from her.

  • Glam Dixie

There’s my girl. Drag Queen realness.

  • Sara__B

    Formal swimwear.

  • marlie

It’s the exact same silhouette she wears every single time, and I guess that’s never going to change, but at least this time it’s not some heavy beaded or satin number. But there are too many elements – the cutouts, the crossover in the bodice, the gold accented waist, and the striping/seaming detail in the skirt.

    • kimmeister

And for once, the boobs are put away, and she is showing skin elsewhere.

      • marlie

True. So maybe I should shut up about the cutouts. 😛

  • Cassidy Olsen

Major prom vibe from those cut-outs.

    • majorbedhead

I was just going to say that. I saw many a dress like this at David’s Bridal when I was prom dress shopping with my oldest daughter last year.

    • Gatto Nero

Is this what the kids are wearing to prom nowadays?!

      • marlie

There were cutouts a few years after I graduated (in the 90s), but then it was scandalous and tacky. Now it’s de rigueur.

      • Cassidy Olsen

Yuuuup. Most girls don’t have her figure, but the cut-outs and shape are popular.

  • decormaven

The fit in the hips seems a bit puckery, but maybe that is due to the pin tucks. She’s worn better iterations of this style. Her hair looks good, so that’s a plus on her marketing side.

  • KT

Step aside, Lea Michele — there’s a new Of Course in town!

  • ChelseaNH

In the pictures with the big smiles, she looks so much like Denise Richards. I am suddenly inspired with so many scary possibilities.

  • Blair Sylvester

wow a new flavor of Sofia now with cutouts and a mermaid skirt and skintight bodice

  • ScarlettHarlot

I wish she’d gone more Egyptian, with some bright pops of blue and red in accessories.

    • MoHub

Yes. I got the beginnings of Egyptian, but it didn’t carry through.

“I’d be like Cleopatterer if I could have my way …”

    • BayTampaBay

If she did that she would like she was wearing an Aztec Goddess Costume.

  • MilaXX

typical Sophia but I don’t hate it

  • ellatheingenue

    oh, sofia
    of course sweetie

  • Jessi03

Like Ariel and Jasmine had a baby and it’s her wedding day.

    • Pennymac

  • Jacob Bowen

Part of the issue is the color….but the other part is this dress. Also, the striped gold waist-band reads very super-hero.

    • Constant Reader

I think I like it more now that you’ve pointed out the super-hero belt.

  • Danielle

    Of course.

  • Imasewsure

I like it. Don’t love it but s’alrite for the after party

  • Meg0GayGuys6

    Of course.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

    Early Charo…

  • DagnyReardon

    Somewhere Charo is smiling

    • alyce1213

      I’m guessing Palm Springs.

  • Gatto Nero

Would be better without the cutouts.
But of course she can’t help herself.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

    Of course.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

    Grow up, Sophia.

  • alyce1213

The highest paid woman in television could –and should — do much better. She really needs to step up her game. BK Evan suggested de la Renta — I wholeheartedly agree. That would be a great start.

  • willworktomorrow

She looks stiff and uncomfortable, and not very happy. Unfortunate, because she’s such a beautiful woman.

  • Gaby

Later, she met up with Shakira for an impromptu Colombian belly dance session.

  • dschubba

Something about that over-the-shoulder shot is reminding me of an NFL cheerleading uniform.

  • bertkeeter

    Gorgeous woman…. get it together!

  • GeoDiva

Totally predictable, but if you got it….flaunt it!

  • CPK1

In the immortal words of the Duchess, slutty slutty slutty

    • BayTampaBay

This is weird but I feel she always looks slutty but never looks vulgar.

  • SierraDelta

I don’t think she looks as if she particularly likes this outfit. Her smile seems kind of tentative in most of the pictures. I know it’s her signature style, but the dress itself looks old — not in a vintage way, more in a leftover-from-the-community-center-theater kind of way. A lot of the design elements are repeated, but they all seem to be screaming at each other.

  • sagecreek

    It’s a little Charo, isn’t it?

  • MannahattaMamma

shooeee whew. that’s a whole lot going on there…it makes me sort of exhausted to look at it.

  • Malibufire

    So very…Charo.

    • MoHub

Well, isn’t she this decade’s Charo?

  • Janet B

    Of course.

  • B_C_J

She is undoubtedly beautiful but there are a few too many design elements in this gown. Also, the hair is a tad too long.

  • Aidan B

    Of course.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Well, work it while you got it. Because it doesn’t last forever.

  • Clash D

I know that I should be looking at her face – but that dress is making me look at her waist. Now I’m confused.

  • peachy

same dress; different color; different event.
