Shailene Woodley in Elie Saab Couture at the “Divergent” Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on March 19, 2014

Credit where it’s due: she’s dressed appropriately for the event. Since that’s not always a given with her, positive reinforcement is in order.

Shailene Woodley attends the premiere of “Divergent” in Los Angeles, California in an Elie Saab couture dress paired with Stuart Weitzman sandals.

Elie Saab Couture Fall 2010 Collection

It’s a gorgeous dress and it looks great on her. We like it a whole hell of a lot better without the strap. The shoes are okay, but we don’t think we’d have recommended a bright gold with that dress. Everything else represents the absolute bare minimum of effort. Dress, shoes, clean face; done. That’s about as far as she’s gonna go, it seems.

Still, it’s couture, honey. You couldn’t pay someone to do your hair for you?

I was about to make a prude remark about how that was a whole lotta slit for such a young girl but she’s 22, so carry on. Certainly a step up and a world away from the tatty shorts and the surfer hand gesture of the last appearance.

  • NinjaCate

    No jewels honey?

    • That should be my default greeting to people.

    • MK03

      The dress is pretty blingy.

      • fursa_saida

I still think it needs earrings. Or rather, earrings that aren’t nearly invisible, as the ones she has on are.

      • mlle

I think mid-sized emerald teardrop earrings could look good. They’d pick up her eye colour and introduce some variety into her bling.

  • sagecreek

So much better than the cutoff shorts, I can’t really criticize anything.

  • imperfectlaura

She got a new stylist, so I guess that could explain the improvement. I like but don’t love this.

  • Miss Ruth

Very appropriate; props to Ms. Harmony Moonglow up there. But honey, would a little lip have killed you?

  • random_poster

Is it missing a strap, or is it that the model’s version uses that sleeve-like piece pulled up across the torso and around her neck? It’s an awkward dress, and I think it ages her.

    • ballerinawithagun

I think it is one of those dresses that on the hanger you can’t tell what to do with it, then you spy the illustrated hang tag! Oh look numerous options! A different dress every night!

      • formerlyAnon

    • makeityourself

She chose to wear the dress without the piece around her neck. Check out the gaping hole under the one “sleeve.” Her head was supposed to go through there. And see how the asymmetric neckline isn’t completely straight? This was just her own freelance interpretation and I agree, the silhouette is aging.

      OTOH, rocking bod.

  • lbl

It reminds me of a sari, but an ugly one. I think it looks more interesting on the model. The shape is better.

Ugh, I’ve got to stop looking now. Something about it is making me sick.

  • Sarah

Her eyes go together with that dress like Laverne goes with Shirley. Lovely. I really like it, but for the shoe – I agree it should be less shiny. Oh, and I see she’s clinging to her ratty anklet. Begone, ratty anklet.

    • kimmeister

I’m going to take up the habit of issuing “Begone!” commands to anything that displeases me. I’ll try not to get fired.

  • MilaXX

I just want one high glam look with soft marcel waves .

    • formerlyAnon

I promise to gush over soft marcel waves if they show up.

    • decormaven

She’s got the features to make that work. I don’t know which is more maddening- a don’t care, won’t try look or a look that is [this close] to being a WERQ. I would have loved a killer mani/pedi with this look.

  • Donna Tabor

She always poses like a little girl playing dress-up. She’s so pretty; I think she’ll grow into her own style one of these days.

    • jen_vasm

Unfortunately, she’s in the long shadow of JLaw-she’s going to have to diverge (see what I did there?) from this kind of look/movie/etc to be seen in her own right, or wait for Jen to flame out (see: Eva Longoria/Eva Mendes) but I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. Jen’s got young, sexy yet earthy bombshell on lockdown.
Oh, the dress is nice, but that khaki under-miniskirt looks like the dreaded peekaboo Spanx.

  • MilaXX

In general this was a sloppy looking RC. From the pictures I’ve seen everyone look on the level. People out forth the effort, but honestly I think Kate Winslet was the best of the lot.

  • sienna elm

If ever a dress called (screamed!) for drop earrings…this is the one. I adore this dress.

  • marlie

Baby steps (again). This dress is gorgeous. I’m going to let her have the shoes. If she’d worn bolder lipstick, this would have been a WERQ for her.

  • alyce1213

Gorgeous dress and it fits her just perfectly. It’s a better version than the model’s.
I’d tweak a couple of things — her hair could be more done, long earrings, but really, I can’t complain.
This is one of her better looks.

    • Pennymac

I was just thinking that it photographed much better on the RC pictures.I really like it. Its dramatic.

  • DTLAFamilies

She’s so pretty, but this is too old for her, especially given her fanbase. She needs to go for funkier/younger designers. She’s probably feel more relaxed and it would translate to better RC posing.

  • Nika E

    Not even feeling this.

  • @Biting Panda

I love this dress and I’ll even give it to her as not too much dress for her to manage. The fresh face and unshalacked hair offer a nice balance. I’m going with a full on Attagirl.

    • Let it out

Agreed! This looks like a young woman putting on a gorgeous dress and yet not trying to look like her mother. So pretty!

  • Jacob Bowen

Thank you for removing that strap, it would have been WAY too tricky for her with it! But girl, would a LITTLE makeup kill you?

    • ShaoLinKitten

She has a ton on her eyes, and her foundation sorta stops about an inch from her hairline. So the real question is, would BETTER makeup kill her?

      • Jacob Bowen

All I see on her eyes is mascara and liner, maybe she needs to blink for me to see anything else? BETTER makeup would be so good for her. She needs some color on her cheeks and lips.

  • Trickytrisha

Lovely, lovely dress – for someone lots older than she is. Doubt very much that YA fans are too into this kind of apparel. If I can see Joan Collins wearing it, then it’s too mature for a 22 year old.

  • Claudia Berry

The premiere of the biggest movie (so far) of her career and she can’t pony up good hair or makeup? Get thee to Erlanger, honey!

  • Imasewsure

I can live with the hair and makeup but I’d love to yank that sleeve off of the dress. Still it’s an interesting gown so that is a huge plus

  • JauntyJohn

This is a dress for long, leggy strides and/or capricious tropical breezes. It’s a dress that only might realize it’s “Wow!” factor in motion.
I definitely agree with the BK consensus: Good move on losing the strap.
Overall she looks okay. I can’t really ding her on anything, but she definitely hasn’t found her RC groove (yet).
On a second pass I thought to myself, “This is a dress Susan Anton would really work.” Then I realized that more than half the BK’s wouldn’t know who Susan Anton was, so I scrolled through the mental Rolodex (another dated reference! I can’t win!) for the answer to the question: ‘Who is the spiritual RC stepchild of Susan Anton?’
I came up with Stacy Keibler.
Thus, we come the long way ’round to:
“This is a dress Stacy Keibler would really work.”

    • random_poster

Susan Anton would certainly have a better chance of making this work. Gads, that’s a name I haven’t heard in years!

    • formerlyAnon

      Full credit for Anton/Keibler references!

  • cocohall

That is quite a course correction for the girl who recently sported a tribute to “Britney Spears Visits the 7-11” Points for effort and a gorgeous dress, but I’ve got whiplash now. This dress needs Angelina Jolie or Charlize Theron or someone else used to working the goddess vibe. But still, a vast improvement over daisy dukes and flip flops.

  • quiltrx

I love Elie Saab, so this takes her ever-so-slightly to my good side.
And I don’t think her hair will do much more than this. She was on Fuse TV the other day and had on that same SHITTY outfit she wore to that screening…except without the grey hoodie under the jacket, and she had on actual jeans and what may have been Chucks. She actually looked A LOT better than she did at the screening.
Except that hair. She kept flopping it around and it looked like a nightmare, sticking out every which way.

  • I literally can’t believe this is the same person who showed up in jean cutoffs the other day. She officially has no excuse.

  • kmk05

The face is so clean it’s not the same colour as the rest of her body. Foundation matching, honey. Use it.

She does fill out that dress beautifully, and her posture us great. The shot of her back is beautiful.

  • siriuslover

Better than that monstrosity Jersey Shore outfit she wore in that post from yesterday. Eee gads. I’m looking forward to these movies, but not so much her red carpet moments.

  • Susan Velazquez

I know it’s an improvement but a gold and beige combo always makes me think of a grand dame ladies who who carries an annoying bichon frise. I think this color scheme is too old for her.

    • Mojone

      It’s Maggie Smith’s dress.

  • kittenwithaquip

Is it just me or does her makeup get all weird near her hairline?

  • formerlyAnon

I think that less slit would have diminished the “You Tarzan, Me Jane in formal gown” air, but I like the dress and love the fabric and think she’s a pretty young thing, though in a mold of generic pretty-neither-beautiful-nor-interesting of which I’m a bit fatigued. I’ll get over it.

  • Gatto Nero

Hell, she showered and left the ratty cutoffs at home. I guess that’s a win.

  • Nancer

Um…. Am I the only one who thinks that she wore the dress wrong? Like maybe she was supposed to drape it around her neck like the model? Because something is definitely off about the way the “cape” part is draped over her shoulder. I don’t know guys, something is just off about this.

    • Gatto Nero

Yes — I think the cape is supposed to be draped around her neck, as shown on the model, and that strap thing that’s dangling under her left arm is meant to anchor it from the opposite side.
The way she’s wearing it, if she takes her hand off her hip and lets her arm hang, the cape falls right off.
Guess she didn’t read the assembly instructions.

      • Nancer

I am so glad I am not alone in this! :]

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m liking this-that cape/sleeve is giving me a “Winged Victory of Samothrace” vibe.

  • ScarlettHarlot

I don’t love the dress, it reminds me of those camo nets from M*A*S*H.

  • Sabin

Is this the kind of dress that only really works when it’s moving?

  • Richard Banger

Is it just me, or she she wearing the sleeve/strap thing wrong? There’s a weird hole under her arm

    • Corsetmaker

She’s moved it from one side of her head to the other to lose the strap. The bit on her left shoulder should go to the right of her neck and be anchored round the back by the bit you’re seeing under her arm.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes; I made a similar comment below. The way she’s wearing it, there’s nothing to hold the “cape” bit up; if she takes her hand off her hip, the whole thing falls down.
        Glad someone’s paying attention!

        • Corsetmaker

It’s kind of interesting with the strap as it should be too, but a bit bland otherwise. Changes the whole bodice shape as well.

          • Gatto Nero

I was feeling like a voice in the wilderness. Thank you.

  • uprightcitizen

They’re lending out costumes from “American Hustle” for red carpet events, it would appear …

  • MannahattaMamma

I wish the sleeve were on the other arm: slit on one side, covered arm on the other. Balances. This looks sort of like a half-wrapped present.

  • SophieB210

I just realized what it is about her face. She’s got features that will look amazing when she’s over forty but are’t as well suited to the dew of youth.

  • Corsetmaker

Too old for her and drab. And I prefer it on the catwalk with the strap wrapped round the neck instead of that weird Isadora Duncan scarf she now has. The strap pulled the drape on the body across and made the bodice more interesting.

  • icm

When we are used to seeing her looking so lowkey (almost sloppy) this look doesn’t work for her at all . It appears like a costume on her ,like the opposite of her style and she seems uncomfortable.Though I totally agree that her too casual look on the previous post was horrible as well for the occasion.

  • OhSheila

Awww, I like it so much better with the strap! It does something unique to the silhouette without it being overly tricky.

  • oohsparkley!

My first impression was “Wow! She looks hawt!”. So good job.

  • bhl_1123

She is lucky that she is naturally very pretty and is given very expensive clothes to wear–basically pulling a Shailene is one step above pulling a Jolie. I suggest TLo do a celebrity sliding scale of effort.

  • kt

    She really carries herself well

  • OffToSeeHim

I think it’s too old for her. Isn’t there some designer out there who’s dying to dress a 22 year old and will pay for somebody to do her hair and makeup?

  • B_C_J

She looks wonderful. Glad she simplified it & got rid of the strap. I like the sleek & simple hair given that the dress & the fabric are complicated & attention pulling. I would have liked to have seen a stronger lip.

  • KinoEye

Much better than the fiasco from the other day, but dear, “you’re too short for that gesture.” The dress is great, but I think it’s a little overwhelming on her.

  • For reason I like it better with the strap.

  • CatherineRhodes

    Frankendress and Pulling a Jolie.

  • kategs

That gown is doing amazing things for her eyes. She looks lovely.

  • KT

What a breath of fresh air — this is sooooo much better than her recent cut-offs disaster. Gorgeous dress, and that bronze looks great on her. I actually like the strap more than the big sleeve, but it still looks good. Agree that the hair and makeup are still a bit underdone, but at least she’s wearing makeup, so there’s that!

  • Lily

There’s a drapers’ in north Miami somewhere that is missing an order. The back cut of the dress is interesting, or maybe she just has one of those photographable backs, but the front is a disaster straight from a Shelly Winters movie. I actually like the shoes, but they seem a bit too much for the rest of this fippery.

    • Melanie

i think the dress is doing its part to show her off, but she does have lovely definition in her back.

  • Sif

She looks happy. Good for her!

  • kcnitch

I think she looks pretty great here. And all that eye makeup doesn’t say “clean face” to me.

  • Sunraya

I like this much less than most of the Saab gowns from the past 2 seasons. But at least she isn’t wearing raggedy shorts that look like tampon strings hanging out, so there’s that.

  • DeTrop

Aw, she looks all grown up. So pretty, but this dress is better for the GG or Oscars and for someone 10 yrs. older.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I don’t like it. For a young girl, her girls are slung way low without foundation garments lifting them up. The arm cape is hiddy and the fabric looks like upholstery from Donald Trump’s living room. And on her, the whole get up looks costumey.

  • SierraDelta

    Pretty girl, ugly dress.
