Reese Witherspoon in J. Crew in Bretwood, California

Posted on March 13, 2014

Reese is getting her “I’m every woman” on.

Reese Witherspoon out and about in Brentwood, California in a J. Crew black linen ‘These Are The Days‘ Tee.

We LOVE when a ladystar truly surprises us with an unforeseen style shift.  And when that ladystar is someone like Reese, who’s spent the last year on an Apology Tour through Southern California parking lots dressed like a Tennessee country club wife (albeit a really fabulously appointed one), and she shows up in front of our eyes dressed like a mom waiting in the stadium parking lot for her teenage daughter’s first un-chaperoned concert to let out, we can’t help but squeal in delight a little. It’s cute but a little dorky. Or it’s cute because it’s a little dorky. Either way, it’s refreshing.

    STANKBOOT. But cute.

    • FYI – a lowcut tennis sock works wonders under booties like these. Not particularly chic, but then again, not visible either.

      • Aly

Yeah, absolutely. It’s 2014 – current sock technology is FASCINATING (the future IS now) and I doubt female celebs fall victim to stankboot any longer. Stankloafer, probably. But I bet dollars-to-donuts she has some little socks on.

      • leahpapa

This has been my annoyance with BKs immediately calling stankboot whenever a sock isn’t visible. Ankle height, people!

        • conniemd

Thanks to this discussion I finally learned the meaning of stankboot. I always wear thinnish anklets with my booties. I also love booties in winter, because you need to walk through low snow and puddles and higher boots are just too hot and confining to me.

  • butterflysunita

All I can think when I see these photos is I wish I were in Southern California right now. It’s about 20 degrees in NYC.

    • Evan

And windy as hell. And it was sunny and in the 50s on Tuesday 🙁

    • homofascist

My first thought was along the same lines…something like, “I’d kill to wear a t-shirt outside right now”.

    • JynxTheCat

Amen sister. This weather is officially Bullshit.

  • gayle

Reese should teach an underground class on how to take these photos because she is a PRO and several lady stars could learn a thing or two from her.

    • It’s true. This part of fame she’s incredibly good at.

    • Barb Ray

Love how the hat is tipped back just that little extra bit so her face will photograph well. Strong work.

      • DesertDweller79

And I was thinking, “Your brimmed hat is totally useless right now since it is not shading your face”.

        • kimmeister

And it’s clearly warm enough to be outside in a tee, so the felt hat is out of place.

    • halleygee

Can’t you see her teaching it just like Elle Wood? What was that, the bend and snap?

      • Kate Andrews

I watched it on a plane recently. I love that movie!

    • leahpapa

I’ve heard that most paps are tipped off by the celebrities’ own people when a “candid” photo-op is happening. That sounds pretty cynical and I don’t know if it’s true, but if it is, I marvel that so many of them seem unprepared to be photographed.

      • Kent Roby

Aside from the uber-stars who clearly hate being hounded, I imagine that many celebs are as paps-hungry as Kathy Griffin was on her show “The D List”.

        • largishbearishAtlish

          I miss that show…

    • Kent Roby

I agree, and will add that Parker Posey should teach a class as well; I’m still laughing at her over-the-top hamming in the photos of her that were featured here awhile back!

      • CelandineM

Add Salma Hayek to the list, she and Reese could teach Ph.D. level ” candid” photo op posing.

  • Ginger

How very “Sixteen Candles” of her!

    • Betsy

I just saw this after I posted. That’s exactly what I thought.

  • MilaXX

and this is why Reese is queen of the parking lot tour.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

What if she’s really homeless and sleeps in unlocked luxury SUVs and nobody realizes this?

    • Okay, that made us LOL.

    • decormaven

Then I need to follow her and find where she picks all these killer designer bags out of trashcans.

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Well, she’s in California, I’m sure there are “celebrity’s garbage” tours that show tourists where some celebrites steal their clothes.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

You could write a script for a movie starting from that BRILLIANT idea.

P.S: I’m suppresing an uncontrolable laughter at work because of this, thanks for making my evening.

  • Alyssa

I enjoy the fact that the only time I see picture of Reese seems to be in a parking lot or running errands. This particular outing seems designed to wind up in a “Stars, They’re Just Like Us” spread. That being said, I would take one of everything she’s wearing, minus the hat. I would choose not to wear the boots with this outfit, however.

  • ModernDowager

I seriously considered buying those Rag & Bone boots. Every time I see them on a celebrity–I’m glad I didn’t. Howwhy are they so unflattering?

    • Alyssa

I think they’d look really cute with bootcut jeans.

    • FrigidDiva

It’s the pants. I think that skinny legged pant with those boots just make her legs look stumpy. I would have loved to have seen this with some cute ballet flats instead of those booties.

  • @Biting Panda

Hmmmm, no. This is not my favorite. The short legs of the jeans paired with those boots makes my eye twitch. I don’t buy her in that hat (as opposed to Olivia Wilde) and she’s just never going to be a Tshirts with words kind of gal. Girl, this is not your parking lot look.

    • JauntyJohn

    • gabbilevy

Right. The tee and jeans are very everywoman, but that hat takes a special celeb (or at least someone with more hipster cred than Reese has) to pull off. And she’s not.

      • …It’s a spring-in-Los Angeles thing. Seriously, every damn female is wearing a felt hat of one variety or another right now. If she’s going for the average girl around town look, she absolutely nailed it.

(And yeah, I totally agree that the hat doesn’t quiiiiiite suit her.)

        • kerryev

          Because Pharrell?

          • Nah–if anything, his giant hat was making fun of this trend, which has been around for a few years now.

  • carpediva

“Reese, sensing an opening left by the timely (and voluntary) departure of Anne Hathaway from the competition, makes a bold play here to regain her previous ‘Stars: They’re Just Like Us!’ frontrunner status. (But perhaps due to lack of practice, she wildly over-corrects and instead finds herself first among ‘Stars Who Try Too Hard.’)”

  • Roz

Her hat is sitting on her head funny. Veering into “look at that bitch eating crackers” territory but it is the truth. And I want an answer.

    • Barb Ray

She has it tilted back a little extra so her face will photograph well. It’s a stage trick. She knows exactly what she’s doing. I admire it actually, because she owns it, and doesn’t try to look all ‘surprised’ that she is being photographed.

  • Betsy

Looks like the outfit Molly Ringwald wore in Sixteen Candles (minus the logo and the pants were a skirt) which I coveted when I was 13 years old. I think that might say something about Reese’s ensemble?

  • Imasewsure

Hipster Doof – nice to know if it’s only for men… Love the jeans, the boots and the bag. the rest looks like a costume on her. YUCK

  • Lilak

Oooh, sorry. I think this is bumpin’ up on Lohan togs a little too much for Miss Witherspoon.

  • halleygee

I love that shirt bc I love that song by 10,000 Maniacs… kinda cool I can actually afford it!

  • Glam Dixie

These photos only cement my hatred for booties under almost all circumstances.

  • formerlyAnon

NOOOOOOO. Respect/hate tipping over into hate/hate.

  • peachy

well, it’s different…. reminds me of ashley simpson, circa whatever year was her epic snl fail.

  • frannyprof

Now I have Natalie Merchant stuck in my head. Thanks, Reese.

    • marlie

Now I have to download their music library. I have the albums on cassette in a box in the back of my closet, but no CDs/digital.

    • ballerinawithagun

One of the BEST songs ever!

    • Sabin

Oh, I was thinking of the Queen song. The one that was Freddy’s last video. And not getting the connection with the t-shirt At. All.

  • FrigidDiva

It’s nice to see that Johnny Depp has let others go through his elderly gay windchime accessories. That hat looks straight out of the Depp collection.

  • marlie

So this is 1992 Reese? I can get behind that.

  • Her hair is looking exceptionally fine.

  • SugarSnap108

I wondered where Debbie Gibson has been!

  • teensmom99

Hat is a little too pretentious says this mom of a teen.

  • Smiley, bitchface, smiley, bitchface. She can’t make up her mind.

  • lillyvonschtupp

I thought it was a salute to All In The Family

  • chrissybee

I want to own that t-shirt because that t-shirt is right. These are the days. Sunrise, sunset, etc. And yes, I am a dorky mom of a teen…just like Reece! Just like her. Except I down own hand-wash only linen t-shirts, for good reason. Other than that, we’re twins.

  • ah dorbs

  • Jacob Bowen

Gosh she is SELLING the “Be Me” at this moment. I would be you in that exact outfit and climate RIGHT NOW. I would literally squeeze myself into your exact jean size so I could be in that weather.

  • Granny panties

Hate everything but the boots, esp hate the phony looking hat, and the unflattering stretch jeans.

  • Cassidy Olsen

I thought it was Emma Stone in the image on the main site, good for you Reese!
