Oscars 2014 WERQ: Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace

Posted on March 03, 2014

We’re as surprised as anyone would be to find ourselves giving neck rolls and finger snaps to Kate Hudson, of all people, at the Oscars. Put it this way: she was not on our “Ones to Look Out For” list going into the night.

Kate Hudson attends the 86th Annual Academy Awards held at the Dolby theater in Hollywood, California in an Atelier Versace cape and gown paired with Neil Lane jewelry.

But GodDAMN if she isn’t serving up some serious Crawford/Dietrich/Garbo Old Hollywood glam. That is some serious Silver Screen Goddess drag going on there. We all should think Lupita, because she’s made capes or cape-like affectations hot on the red carpet again. We’re all for the lady stars getting in touch with the super-dramatic drag side for the red carpet. Hair and makeup look great; jewelry is tastefully on point – pretty much everything here is perfect except for some slight wrinkling in the skirt.

You WERQ that movie star perfection, Miss Lady. It might even happen some day!

And if you’re loving our Oscars red carpet bitchery, you might consider checking out our new book, darling! “A hilarious critique of celebrity culture,” they called it! We’re proud. And shameless.

    • Betsy

I love this! It definitely needs the cape but is a total WERQ!

      • Lea Setegn

Didn’t she wear it without the cape once she got in the building? I remember seeing her on stage and hating the dress. The cape is completely necessary to lift it to glam status.

        • Betsy

You are right! And it made far less of an impact without it, right?! I feel like she put the cape back on later in the evening. Maybe she realized?

        • E. D.

Yeah, I really wish she would have left it on. It makes the outfit.

      • Lucía Gavello

I liked it even without the cape, this was my favourite of the night, hands down. WERQ indeed!

        • merciblahblah

Lucia – I could not agree more. This was the only dress that made me gasp out loud. Loved it SO hard. I think Kate can always rock a deep vee, and this dress is PERFECTION, with our without the cape.

    • Akemi

She looks great. I wasn’t even paying attention to her last night, but wow, that is a great dress. I love old Hollywood glam.

    • ashtangajunkie

Hudson brought it. Also, they showed Goldie when Kate was presenting last night and she looked so proud – very cute.

      • mickiemonkey

And didn’t Goldie look no longer like Goldie.

        • Judy_J

Goldie looked like a caricature of Goldie.

          • lexilexi

And Liza looked like a caricature of Liza.

            • IMNAngryLiberal

Liza has looked like a caricature of Liza for the last 20 years.

          • Judih1

Golda looked scary and dated. Trying to hold onto a look that no longer works for her. Evolve like Jessica Lange did!!!!

        • JulieTy

Goldie looked like her character in “First Wives Club.” And not in a good way. :-(

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Goldie looked like a blond Valerie Bertinelli and Kim Novak looked like Howdy Doody.

      • sagecreek

It was the only Goldie moment of the entire evening that didn’t horrify me. Proud mama was very cute. The rest was…bad.

      • clatie

        how could you tell?

    • alyce1213

You made a great typo — we should all “think Lupita.”

      • Random Compliments

I “think Lupita” all the time.
“What would Lupita do?”, as I stand in front of my closet before I dress for work.

        • sagecreek

Standing before my closet, I’m pretty sure Lupita would weep. Or maybe laugh. It’s a tossup.

          • majorbedhead

She’d flee in horror if she saw what passes for my closet.

            • Sarah

No, she’s very nice seeming, so I think she’d just offer you her team or some lipstick tips and then you could all have a coffee together or something.

            • majorbedhead

I watched that roundtable that she did with Oprah and Emma Thompson and the rest of the women nominated and she seemed so approachable and nice. I know, she’s an actress, and can portray these things, but she just seemed to not have lost herself, which was nice to see.

    • Nancy

All I’m thinking is that the Project Runway judges would be all over that puckering in the seams in the back.

      • barbarienne

Under her rear is puckering, but I think that long thing along the left side is a pulled thread. It doesn’t look to be on a seam. Danger of trains and flowy things.

      • ushoda

        agree, and with right reason.
and really, i don’t get all the buzz about this. don’t get me wrong, she looks amazing but idk… i think i’ve seen this dress like a million times before, even on her (not so greatly pulled off)

    • Eovaai

This was my favourite look of the night. So Dietrich. So awesome.

    • @Biting Panda

      “If I am a Star, I will BE a Star…If I am a Star, I will BE a star…If I am…”

      • SierraDelta

Doesn’t that mantra require ruby slippers?

    • Judy_J

I’m thinking Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard. Miss Kate looks fabulous.

    • Carla_Charlton

She can wear just about anything and look pretty darn great, but this is fantastic. I think I read that she works our for something like 4 hours a day — it’s paid off for her, that’s for sure.

      • sagecreek

Well, all those hours sure did pay off! She looks good in this dress. I’m pretty sure in later life she may regret all the books she didn’t read, all the friends she didn’t make, all the issues she didn’t study, but hey, if it takes four hours a day to look good, who am I to quibble?

(Sorry – not attacking you personally, just this stupid, stupid system. Grrr.)

        • barbarienne

She may be reading (or listening to) books while she works out. We can always hope!

          • sagecreek

Good point! I was just feeling cranky.

    • KT

Yes! I think this might be my favorite look of the night. Bitch brought it. None of my expectations were met in regards to the nominees (except maybe June Squibb), but I was pleasantly surprised by Kate and a few others. She is owning that shit.

    • marlie

This is wonderful. I love the old Hollywood glamour. It’s perfect for her, and she knows it. She’s just stunning! Definitely one of my favorites of the night.

    • allcapsERINN

Fabulous! But . . . but . . . did she get a nose job or something? Why does her face suddenly look so unfamiliar to me??

      • schadenfreudelicious

i thought the same thing, something about her face looks different, but I couldn’t say what….

        • Alyssa

There was a post on her the other day that also made it look like she’s had work done in the nose area…

      • stlellen

Is that what it is? I’m struggling with the same thing.

        • Blair Sylvester

I think she has one of those faces that can look really different depending on how much war paint you slap on it but maybe its plastic surgery

      • GeoDiva

I think it is the lack of photoshop that is throwing it off. You can see it around her eyes.

    • http://timjonesyelvington.com Tim Jones-Yelvington

I loved this on the carpet, but it didnt look as strong without the cape, there was some buckling around the bust, it seemed like, when she was presenting during the broadcast.

    • SophieCollier

YES!!! I was waiting for you to post Kate! When I saw this look last night, I just about gasped.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

      That.dress.is.beautiful. *sigh*

    • ballerinawithagun

The puckering is horrible but still very glam. But Gwyneth started this whole look 2 years ago, so Lupita is just (beautifully) continuing the look and passing the torch. Kate fell apart in the dressing department for awhile but she was fabulous during her Almost Famous time. Glad she is back. Maybe she’ll do some better movies now.

    • Sobaika

Hey, if McConathing can do it… I always forget that Kate Hudson broke out with Almost Famous and launched her career with an Oscar nomination.

At any rate, this was my favorite look of the night. Ontrend without being expected or boring, fits her like a dream. I really like the McQueen she wore at the Emmys too.

      • Tatiana Luján

I too keep wishing she tryes a different career route.

    • lamamu

The fit of the dress is magical, but the fabric looks cheap to me. It looks like there is a snag running down the length of the side of her dress in that last pic. Maybe it’s a seam, but it’s puckered in a way that speaks of cheap satin.

    • majorbedhead

This is stunning. I did not expect this from her at all.

      • sojourneryouth

The back with that drape is so gorgeous and flattering.

    • butterflysunita

I was wondering if anyone besides Lupita was going to get the coveted WERQ! Kate does look stunning.

    • Violentcello

I spotted her in a wide shot and thought, “Oh my god, who is that? Zoom in! Zoom in!” She looks gorgeous.

Even though the dress is beautiful, I was a little disappointed that she took the cape off to present.

    • Alfred Cox

Gorgeous. Surprising so, but still gorgeous.
And the shade was effusive enough to cover all 50 states. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Get it!

    • Truthiness2U

Loved everything about this. I agree, totally old school Hollywood, but with some extra drama going on with the beading. The hair, make-up, jewelry…all wonderful, and flattering. White can wash out blonde white girls, but this complemented Kate instead.
Totally one of my fave looks of the night, along with Lupita and June’s.

    • Aidan B

One of my favorites of the night! Freaking stunning.

    • Lilithcat

I’d prefer it without the cape, and with her hair up.

      • Grumpy Girl

Agree on the hair–it just looks overprocessed or overstyled or something–which would be passing if I thought they had to spray it in place for an updo (what with the rain and all). I also don’t like the nails.

    • MilaXX

This is a style & color that works well for her. It was a smart move to go this route.

    • ShaoLinKitten

If McConaughey can do it, Kate Hudson sure can. Someday, girl.

    • Missy

That little cape-drape elevates it from a moderately pedestrian dress. It totally transforms the look from the front. I’m very impressed. (I’m sure Kate was just waiting breathlessly for my opinion.)

    • Victoria Anzalone

This was my favorite of the night by far. So dramatic. And the hair and makeup are GORGEOUS.

    • Youbeguilemenot

      Kate Hudson. Wow. Who’d’ve thunk?

    • sugarkane105

Don’t forget, the Oscars is where Kate Hudson got her start, after being nominated for Almost Famous. I bet she can make a comeback.

      • Jessica Freeman

Which is also where she showed up in a cape, but the Stella McCartney version. Meaning, it was terrible.

    • Blair Sylvester

didn’t Goop make capes hot again? I mean I hate to give Gwyneth credit but she’s owed it. This dress says I’m back bitches. I was also impressed with her as a presenter she seemed sober and articulate. She must want a movie role

      • sugarkane105

I was thinking the same thing. This is more reminiscent of Goop than Lupita to me.

    • decormaven

What a dress! She looked amazing last night. Definitely wasn’t expecting it, so that makes it all the sweeter.

    • Gorengirl

She was my Best Dressed and Im not a fan of hers. but damn she looked fabulous!

    • webslice33

screams movie star! very old star glam…

    • Anathema_Device

Stunning dress and she rocked it. Well done, Kate.

    • Jecca2244

the seaming is pretty bad for that high end of a dress. she’s working it like she wants to get back into movies…

    • stubbornthoughts

So crazy that Kate is getting a WERQ the same night Matthew got an Oscar. Ten years ago is slaying us all.

    • Introspective

She is owning this carpet. Rightfully pointed out imperfections and all, she is sti oozing glam on a level that so many couldnt muster if they tried based on their looks last nite.

I know shes mastered the art of selling herself as a star w with relevance, because Despite her not having landed a manor role of late, I didnt wonder why she was there, like I did w jessica bile (mispelled but then purposely kept because, well, you know)

    • Jenna621

Rachel Zoe is as good as she’s ever been.

    • deelup

Rachel Zoe telling Hathaway to suck it.

    • frannyprof

According to the Fug Girls, Ms. Kate may be having man trouble. This is her “look at what you’re missing” dress.

    • TRSTL

She looks amazing….. I hope she witnessed her Mom on stage last night and made a silent vow to NOT go that route…. ever.

      • EveEve

        too late

    • Pennymac

OUT OF THE PARK! Also, the shot of her mom, proudly beaming in the audience when she presented, was precious.

    • largishbearishAtlish

      oh dear…it looks so flammable!

next on PR- make a dress out of coffin liner. Out.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Definitely working the Silver Screen Goddess look-love, love this look, and she’s styled perfectly! SNAP!!

    • formerlyAnon

A tad less sternum and I’d call it perfect.

    • Bill Curtis

Carol Lombard all the way. I wish her movies were half as great as the dress.

    • crash1212

Girl is working it. I really loved how the look changed when she took off the shoulder-wrap-cape-thingy for her presenter duties. This is a total WERQ.

    • Alyssa

“It might even happen some day” – this had me seriously laugh out loud! One of the many reasons I love this site! :)

    • Jessica Freeman

That is some unfortunate puckering, fortunately its in the back. She looks incredible.

      • Qitkat

Someone in the pressing department is to blame. Even PR contestants would get called out for that.

    • Call me Bee

Miss Kate here, and Miss Kate Blanchet were my faves of the night. Both decked out for the Oscars, instead of just another awards show as so many others were….

    • RuthGo

I wish she hadn’t taken off the cape to present. Still a nice dress but it loses the DRAMA without it.

    • jw_ny

Kate”s hair and makeup are just lovely…I’m on board with this as a werq. The gown is striking, but seems a bit to diva for her, and the drape with shoulder pads is kinda weird. This is another sternum bearing neckline that I actually like today (Lupita’s being the other), and I think it’s because the shape is a true V with the boobs being mostly covered.

    • Sunraya

She looks fabulous, although I think the way the cape attaches is weird. This gown seriously flatters every inch!

    • Anna

I’m usually indifferent to flat out don’t like her red carpet choices, but I’ll concede she looks good. From the front. Puckering in the back is distracting.

And burst out laughing on the bus at “It might even happen someday.”

    • bertkeeter

Without that cape thing and the bridal train it would be even more stunning…. As it is, no!

    • Little_Olive

Werk, werk indeed, and snaps in Z formation for de unexpectedness.

    • Alloy Jane

The dress looks nice but I cannot even begin to focus on it because her hair is just so tragic. That is some Heather Locklear level damage.

    • quiltrx

Ah, so it had a cape! I saw your WERQ and thought well, I thought it was a big ol’ nothing…which it kind of was onstage. But the cape MAKES it, big time.

    • stellamaris73

I would give any amount of money to see Claudette Colbert, Barbara Stanwyck, or Carole Lombard in that dress.

    • Qitkat

She brought it. I love a great white dress that is in no way bridal.

    • MannahattaMamma

She must be trying to find her way back to “acting” through “posing,” which, of course, was pretty much the problem with her acting career (“Almost Famous” excepted). The two words are not, in fact, synonymous.

    • Corsetmaker

That screams Oscars! I don’t think that’s just creasing in the skirt, it looks like a pull in the satin. Easily done,

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Yeah, you snag someone’s 11ct borrowed diamond ring and before you know it there’s a pull.

        • Corsetmaker

It’s such a drag when that happens. Completely ruins the evening ;)

    • CMSmith1848

I love this. Hmm . . . aren’t there rumors of her and her fiance breaking up?? Is another star reading your book again ;)

    • queeniethebold

      She looks pretty great!

i still can’t figure out what’s different about her face, though. Has she had work? It seemed obvious in the pix of her in the Romper Room outfit (yellow blousony blouse with white shorts and white heels) recently — her eyes looked “lifted,” and it wasn’t just the wing-y eyeliner. She’s still so young … i hope it’s just me and not that she’s had work done because: depressing. Oh, what am i saying? i don’t care! But her face does look subtly different.

    • ScarlettHarlot

She looked fantastic, and, unlike her mother, had her hair styled perfectly.

    • suzq

I almost didn’t recognize her, she was so gorgeous. As for the cape not being on stage, she may have sat on it, or gotten pizza on it. She lunged for the pizza when Ellen started passing it out. I was thinking, “oh my god….the DRESSES!”

      • mizzelle

You and every designer/stylist/etc watching the show and going “NOOO, I have to take that back…”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

One thing I really like about Kate is that she hasn’t felt the need to enlarge either her lips or her bust.

      • surfergirl70

She actually does have implants (she was totally flat-chested before), but she was smart and got small ones that suit her frame.

    • MartyBellerMask

      SNAPS OF RESPECT.

    • Joanna

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to see that she has NOT in fact done anything with her eyes – in her last appearance here, she looked like she had just had a major face lift. She’s a beautiful woman and shouldn’t let a scalpel anywhere near her face! Oh, the clothes – amazing!

    • bluefish

      Jean Harlow.

    • JauntyJohn

This was the look that earned my “gay gasp.” Seriously.

    • Lilyana_F

Yes, ma’am! Knocked it out of the park, for sure! That cape is everything!

    • ckokopuff

That girl got the best boob job in all of LaLa land.

    • cocohall

Was she nominated for something? And I missed it? This dress seems like the one you wear when it is “YOUR BIG MOMENT” as opposed to “I’m quite lucky this town runs on nepotism! Lucky, Lucky Me!!” Which is to say, this dress is the opposite of Pulling A Jolie. She is auditioning HARD for something. Don’t get me wrong, she looks lovely in that sort wealthy divorcee on the prowl from the set of an old Astaire-Rogers movie, but it is such a statement that it almost looks like a costume rather than a believable dress for her, the boho girl.

    • Pterodactyl111

Oh, I hope hope hope that giant shoulders are coming back in.

    • CeeRich

She looked fab. My two favorites of the night. Kate and Charlize. Definitely brought the glam and drama. WERQ indeed.

    • rage_on_the_page

      Big night for Versace!

      • Shawn EH

I sort of want their new cologne.

    • pop_top

The shade: “it might even happen some day!”

      • Shawn EH

The Uncles giveth, and the Uncles taketh away!
