Oscars 2014: Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen

Posted on March 03, 2014

Huzzah! Sandy has thrown out her flat iron! Huzzah, we say!

Sandra Bullock attends the 86th Annual Academy Awards held at the Dolby theater in Hollywood, California in an Alexander McQueen dress accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Just look at that luxurious head of hair. So much better than the pin-straight center part she’s beaten to death in the past few years. And check out that dress. Is that a movie star dress or what? Love the midnight blue color as well as that enormous flounce, giving it some real shape. It seems like she was stuck on “slinky” for way too long. You can wear something with some shape to it and it won’t even make you look fat, Sandy! See? We hope to see more shape in your red carpet choices in the future. For now, you get a big ol’ “Attagirl” of encouragement. This may be our favorite Sandy look of all time.

And hey, if your first question is “Why isn’t this a WERQ?” just go ahead and call it one. It’s the Oscars. Everyone’s on their A game.

Oh, and if you’re the impatient type who can’t wait for all our posts to go up today, you can head on over to The Daily Beast to read our initial reactions to all the gowns.

And if you’re loving our Oscars red carpet bitchery, you might consider checking out our new book, darling! “A hilarious critique of celebrity culture,” they called it! We’re proud. And shameless.

    • Introspective

she looks gorgeous. nothing’s wrong here. just classically pretty.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

      Stunningly beautiful.

    • Laura Renee

I’m loving this new earring style! I wonder when it will be affordable to the masses (or likely it already is, I just haven’t noticed it yet)…

      • Ginger

I was just thinking the same thing! This is a new trend that I DEFINITELY can get behind.

      • E. D.

Jewelmint and uncovet are starting to carry this style in general, not this one specifically. Also, depending on the shape of the drop, some earrings can already be worn this way.

        • Laura Renee

          Thanks for the recs!

      • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

Hehe this is not a new style at all – I have a pair of 50′s bling earrings that carry up the ear in a fan shape. What is old is new again yes?

    • http://www.bethposts.blogspot.com/ Buffy

      Simply gorgeous!

    • Danielle

This midnight blue is Her Color. I want to stamp this a personal best.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Absolutely my reaction when I saw her on the red carpet. Sandy is serving up real old school movie star! I love everything about this look — and I don’t know that I have ever loved a McQueen dress before (I love many McQueen dresses as works of art, just usually not ON people).

      • jen_vasm

I love that her style is shifting from trying to be on par with the starlets (which she always successfully did) to ‘I am Hollywood Royalty’, which is ageless. She wears it well and hopefully she will be a model for other actresses (I’m looking at you, Jennifer Anniston)

    • Introspective

also, file this under “how to look like a movie star.”

    • Ginger

I never, in a million years, would’ve guessed that to be a McQueen gown. She does look beautiful.

      • Evan

Yes, nothing about it really says McQueen, just like a lot of the stuff the Duchess of Cambridge doesn’t really scream McQueen, but it is gorgeous nonetheless. Maybe there’s McQueen and then a McQueen Lite line for those who aren’t as adventurous or prefer something not as edgy?

        • Ginger

That’s definitely a possibility. However, it seems to me as though the head designer (I can’t remember her name and am too lazy to Google it) isn’t remaining true to Alexander McQueen and his aesthetic by offering a “McQueen Lite”. I remember viewing his collections and literally having my breath taken away by how different and gorgeous and strange his collections were. His were always my favorite collections. I could be wrong (about McQueen Lite not remaining true to his legacy), but that’s just my impression.

ETA: I know that designers/design houses do need to evolve and change with the times, but I firmly believe that there should be an underlying thread/feel to the collections that ties the collections to what made the designers in the first place.

          • Evan

It’s Sarah Burton. I think the runway looks seem to do a really good job of remaining true to the McQueen aesthetic, but then they almost always seem to get watered down for celebrities.

            • Ginger

Thank you for the name! In pretend-land where I’m a celebrity and have countless designers throwing free clothes at me (keep in mind that being a celebrity is one of the very last things I’ve ever wanted in life), McQueen is at the very top of who I’d want to clothe me.

    • Billie_Dawn

Fabulous. Best of the night, and the hair is absolutely to die for.

      • Ned Racine

        And yet you never died.

      • Rhonda Shore

The wavy hair made all the difference!

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

Very pretty. My only complaint (a minor one) is that I wish she’d worn a stronger lip.

      • sojourneryouth

Me too. I am drooling over how amazing the dress, hair, and makeup are, until we get to the lip. This beautiful blue would have looked amazing with a blue-based red lipstick, and I am just bored by the nude lip trend. It really doesn’t flatter most women.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Geez…how can she be almost 50? I’ll have what she’s having…

    • Scimommy

Not a WERQ because that twisted fabric in the front looks a bit awkward from close up. But from a distance it’s a knockout.

    • Lolo Andre

Personal Best so WERQ from me

    • Lizzy

I love the way her dress takes over the line of her hair and draws your eye back to the other side of her body… elegant “S” shape.

    • SweetJess MeanGreen

I’m super biased because I’m a Sandy fan girl (yes I own Blind Side) but this was my favorite look of the night. I knew she wasn’t going to win so she didn’t need all eyes on her but damn she brought it. Best look all season for her and she definitely looks like an A-list movie star without being over the top. Yes to the hair and earrings. My only wish would have been George as her friendly date.

People seem to be giving props to Amy Adams for her deep blue but I thought that dress screamed “i’m just here for the goody bag” but she also looked nice.

    • mshesterp

Totally a WERQ to me–one of my favorites of the night. That color against her skin and hair is DIVINE.

    • Victoria Anzalone

Every time she came on screen, at least one member of my family would have to repeat “She looks so pretty.” Gorgeous hair and make-up on her. Love her!

    • SugarSnap108

      Healthy hair, beautiful color. Love.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

That dress called for a necklace. And I know, maybe Sandy is afraid of them, but since she went for the diamonds on the earrings and that bracelet, it seems odd that she skipped the neck for some sparkle.

      • DagnyReardon

I was longing for a Liz Taylor necklace here too.

    • Coleen

I loved this, head to toe. One of my top 5 looks of the night.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Matchy shoes?..(though i really cannot get a good look at them) She looks fantastic, that colour (to quote the words of Kelly Osbourne every 30 seconds) is BEAUUUUUTIFUUL!

    • SewingSiren

Elegant and tasteful. Drop her into any awards show in the last 25 years and she would look appropriate .

    • Frank_821

She looks great but isn’t that blue closer to royal than midnight. Looks that way more on my screen. oh well. tiny quibble..lol

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Gorgeous. A stronger lip would have made it a werq.

      • Sarah

        Yes, lip!

      • Vanessa Reyes

I agree. I was trying to figure out what it was but I think you are right. Also maybe a different nail color. Don’t get me wrong I love a dark nail but I think perhaps something neutral or maybe even silvery. Also her earrings are fabulous!

      • kmk05

She’s not one for a strong lip, is she? She only comes to my mind with that glossy nude she favours.

    • ashtangajunkie

Sandy really does “movie star” so well. This was one of my favourites of the night.

    • halo323

Can we talk about her makeup, too? Because FACE. She looks gorgeous before we even get to the gorgeous dress.

    • Sarah

I loved her dress, and it is a truly gorgeous color. I appreciate the body in her hair, too, but I totally thought “TLo does not approve of mermaid hair” when I saw her on the RC. I guess if it’s gonna be down, it is good that it’s not covering all her nice collarbone/décolletage area though.

      • demidaemon

True, but considering Sandy’s hair history, this is a major improvement.

        • Sarah

          True dat!

    • Kelly

Love this; one of my favorites of the night, partly because of the color, partly because of the effective lack of fuss. I know that “fuss” really suits some people, but I don’t think Sandra Bullock is one of them. Yeah, it’s a tad wrinkled and maybe not all that adventurous, but I don’t care. Adventure fashion isn’t everything (and sometimes it’s Lady Gaga on stilts). This dress and jewels are chic and elegant, and she looks grand.

    • jw_ny

The dress is a lovely color for her and the style suits her…clean and classic…just enough style to make it Oscar appropriate. I’m not gonna rave about it, but won’t deny that she looks good. My only real criticism of this look is her eye makeup…too dark and heavy. From far away I’m seeing ‘Jack Skellington’

    • Patrick Cleary

I love how her hair cascades down one side, and is mimicked in the dress’ folds on the other side.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love the dress, even if it’s a tad wrinkled. And YES to the hair- she always looks better when her hair has a wave or curl to it.

    • Gatto Nero

This whole look — hair and dress — has more volume than she has deployed in a very long time. And it works for her.
As does the insanely beautiful blue of the gown and the great jewelry.
I could do without the blue manicure, though.

    • Blair Sylvester

McQueen is a well she should dip into more often . This dress is like my ideal of an oscar dress beautiful and timeless

    • Jessica Freeman

I loved her hair more than the dress. While this is a lovely dress, it wasn’t exactly ground breaking. But, definitely better than most of her pole dance this year.

    • deelup

I am in a minority here, but to me that dress screams David’s Bridal. Her hair is gorgeous.

    • marlie

The color is spectacular on Sandy, and her hair and makeup look mostly wonderful. This is a fabulous dress for her figure, and it has some visual interest, but it seems a bit… bridesmaid-y to me. It’s still gorgeous, and there’s no denying that Sandy looks better than she has in a while, but I wish she’d been a little more adventurous. All of the A-List ladystars looked beautiful, but a lot of them played it a little too safe.

      • deelup

I’ve been thinking about this far too much today. :) but since everyone is raving about this I feel I must figure it out. Is it the neckline that makes it bridesmaidy? Maybe that and the fact that I have seen bridesmaids in that color?

        • marlie

Maybe it is the neckline – I’ve seen plenty of bridesmaid dresses with that neckline. And I was actually a bridesmaid in a dress that shade of navy (it was rather pretty, for a bridesmaid dress).

          • demidaemon

You are a lucky girl, considering most brides’ predilections for “unique” bridesmaid dresses.

            • marlie

Yes. Fortunately, all of my friends have had good taste (I’ve been in 4).

    • Pennymac

      Regal. Glamorous. Timeless.

    • majorbedhead

One of my favorite gowns last night. I love that color and the dress looked great on her. Would have liked to have seen a necklace, but still. Well done, Sandy.

    • Sunraya

Sandra for Best Dressed this year!!! I just love her old style Hollywood glamour. And I love the attention to detail: her hair is on the opposite side of the detail on the McQueen. This seems like it should be a no-brainer, but how many stylists get such simple details as this wrong??

Love this, and I really like her a lot. So glad she looked great.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Nothing whatever to complain about. That’s WERQ worthy to my eyes.

    • amanda siegelson

she seemed so sad and uncomfortable all night… but she looked lovely. the colour really works for her.

      • SweetJess MeanGreen

I don’t know what’s with her but she’s been looking alittle gloomy all season. Lonely maybe…

      • Qitkat

I noticed she seemed a bit teary after Lupita won. Moved by the speech, and/or sad that she herself lost?

        • amanda siegelson

did you mean cate? because that is who she lost to, and i thought she looked ready to burst into tears during her speech.

          • Qitkat

            Yes, I think I mis-spoke.

        • IMNAngryLiberal

I thought her response was because of Cate’s comments about female-led films and how people wanted to see them and they DID make money — given that Sandy herself led two high grossing female led films last year. Given that Cate has pretty much won everything all awards season long, I can’t think that Sandy expected anything different at the Oscars.

          • Qitkat

            Excellent points. You’re probably right.

    • RescueMe23

      Stunning and beautiful.

    • Jacquelyn

The hair straightener finally went into the light!!!

    • makeityourself

TLo, i DID read your comments on the Daily Beast last night. As usual, you were dead-on and I enjoyed see you there very much. But it was hysterical to me how you were forced to restrain yourselves editorially. It made me realize how much I enjoy your candid, clever and sometimes crass critiques on this blog.

Congrats to you for the DB gig, but I’m so grateful to for this site, and for being able to read what you REALLY wanted to say. Now on with the show!

    • Qitkat

I think this was one time when the so-called mermaid hair was the perfect choice. It doesn’t cover up anything of the dress itself, and gave her a soft elegant silhouette, especially noticeable in the last side photograph. Styling perfection echoing the lines of the dress, which is also a lovely regal color, in reverse. I didn’t mind the lack of necklace because the earrings and cuff are beautiful. She also has GREAT posture.

    • Tracy M

Perfect. Even the blue nails and the touch of blue in her makeup- an absolute personal best.

    • kmk05

OH YES PLEASE. Movie star fabulosity.

    • bertkeeter

Great gown…but not exciting on TV!

    • Granny panties

      I love this whole look.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Beautiful. And I just watched “Gravity” the other night. She did a great job.

    • WendyD

Regal! Give it a sash and a some royal jewels and she could be Kate.

    • Lexistential

I’d call this a WERQ. It’s among her memorable looks, even if it’s among her more subtle, classic ones.

    • TigerLaverada

Definitely a WERQ! That’s movie-star goodness right there.

    • TRSTL

      Absolutely stunning, head to toe……

    • Lilithcat

Thank god someone went for color! And glam. And decent hair. She looks amazing.

    • Judih1

great color but boring. It’s the Oscars and I want to see drama. Not Grammy or VMA kinda drama, but classy drama not safe choices. Love the hair though

    • Lilyana_F

Wow, what a gorgeous dress! Well done, miss Sandy!

    • TerryMH

Y’all are gonna hate me but I am in the dissenting opinion on this one. When I saw her, I thought “typical.” Banal mermaid hair, cliche Oscar dress. Nothing earth shattering or modern about it… Pretty color but midnight navy on pale skin brunettes is hardly a revelation. Maybe I had to see it in person . . .

    • decormaven

So happy the flat ironed hair did not make an appearance this night. Beautiful hair, beautiful dress, beautiful woman. This is how I like to see style on the RC.

    • xmixiex

      she looks gorgeous. those EARRINGS.

    • Stubenville

Definitely brought her A game; breathtaking.

    • SouthernGirlRena

      Love Love Love

    • Maya

one of my favorite looks of the night!

    • Little_Olive

She looks very pretty, but it’s a bit safe. And I really don’t like the fabric on that dress.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Great dress, love her hair-well done, Sandra!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      *applause!*

    • H2

      Perfection!

    • Kathy_Marlow

I think I love that she’s not carrying a clutch. She’s so “MOVIE STAR” here she has someone to carry her stuff, as the Fashion Gods intended.

    • Evan

Some online fashion commentator said this looked like a prom dress. I don’t know what prom they’ve been too!

    • Christopher

one of the few standouts of the night……

    • A Shiny O’Connor

I can’t put my finger on why this look is so uninspiring. Perhaps the fabric is too heavy for that drape. She looks like she’s wrapped in high ceiling chateau length curtains.

    • AMartel

Classic beauty. She knew she wasn’t going to win.

    • Alyssa

Very classy, very timelessly beautiful. Well done!

    • Dan_In_NYC

Definitely an “I’m here to pick up my Oscar” look. Well done.

    • DTLAFamilies

I’ll be the cheese who stands alone and say I didn’t like this. It’s too wrinkled and that curtain down the front is too heavy. Hair is pretty, makeup is too severe.

    • alyce1213

WERQ that movie goddess gown, Sandy. I adored this, head to toe.

    • stubbornthoughts

Stupid E! red carpet never gave us a good look at this dress. IT’S AMAZING!!! I love this, all of it. WERQ for sure.

    • Akemi

      Loved it.

    • butterflysunita

Just beautiful. I love that dress.

    • webslice33

      WERQ!!

    • unbornfawn

      Movie star.

    • formerlyAnon

She’s either grown into her red carpet gravitas or she’s been sandbagging for all these years. It’s not as if she was floating along in queenly splendor, but I only saw occasional, very brief flashes of the awkward-dame-irritated-or-ambushed-by-gown that she often displays on the red carpet.

    • ScarlettHarlot

I adore this color on her!

    • DesertDweller79

The hair and makeup are perfect! Utterly gorgeous! It really paid off since the camera flashed on her clapping every time someone from Gravity won. Which was…. 7 times, I think? Her hair and makeup looked perfect every time. Brava!

And the dress is beautiful on her! Wonderful color and shape.

    • msdamselfly

I hate this look. The bodice of the dress looks shapeless and ill fitting. Her hair looks like it has too much dye and the dark blue color is uninteresting.

    • luludexter

this is all beautiful but what makes it so special is the lovely line of her hair cascading down into the draping, which then flows over her body — aesthetically it’s just really satisfying.

    • MilaXX

Very pretty. That navy worked really well against her coloring.

    • Aidan B

Beautiful for sure, but not one of my favorites. It seems very safe, and I would definitely not have assumed this was a McQueen.

    • Judy_J

Very old-school HOLLYWOOD glamour. She looks like a goddess. Love the color. This is a WERQ for me.

    • Call me Bee

Classic and pretty and Miss Sandra looks relaxed and happy. But it’s not an “OH WOW” for me. Just classic and pretty.

    • ojosazules

Fabulous dress for her. I love it.

    • LJCdoc

Love, love, love the color, but I don’t like how it’s fitting around her hips, and the draping seems a bit … tortured? to me.

    • Michelle Gennari

Beautiful!! She looks marvelous. Dress, hair, makeup, jewelry – perfect!

    • ChristopherM

I thought it was a bit of a yawn. She could get any designer in the world to make her a gown, and this is what she chooses? Step up your game, missy. I am thankful she didn’t look like the topper on a quincenera cake like she did at the Globes, so I suppose that is progress.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

She looks beautiful. But she still looks sad. Just sad.

    • LeelaST

She does look lovely, still not a fan of all that extra drapery.

    • duneboi

Snaps to TLo for your red carpet run down on The Daily Beast. You know a bazillion peeps saw that.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

That is some fabulous hair. She looks so good here that she should never take this off.

    • AnneElliot

Gorgeous. Just flawless. Now, that’s how you dress for the Oscars!!!

    • http://ediblecville.blogspot.com Libby

      Flawless. Those earrings!!!!

    • Cheryl

Wow, stunning. Maybe she was waiting for the Oscars to dump the pin straight hair. Very pretty jewellery, I’m kind of glad she went for earrings and bracelet instead of a necklace.

    • GeoDiva

      Personal best!

    • Imasewsure

Maybe not quite a WERQ since there is nothing edgy or “only her” about this look. She looks fantastic though

    • urbantravels

It’s a beautiful dress in every way, but I cannot get past the parade of CREASES from her waist to her thigh. A dress at this level should not crease all to hell the instant you sit down. Knife sharp creases some of them. Alas!

    • suzq

Simply gorgeous. Perfection from head to toe. I’m digging the earrings.

      • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

        The earrings are divine!

    • KT

Ehhhhh this didn’t do it for me. Nice color, styled well, but the dress is safe and kind of boring in my opinion. Strapless, drapey, blah blah blah. I feel the same way about this as I do about Jennifer Lawrence’s dress — it’s fine, but I’m bored.

    • nowlo

Lovely color on her. Sets off her hair and eye color beautifully.

    • Constant Reader

If there’s a night to go for old movie star glam, the Academy Awards is that night. She looks gorgeous.

    • E. D.

I wish her lip color was better. Could have been a WERQ.

    • Trickytrisha

Pretty damned glorious all around. To-die-for dress. Love the earrings. Best she’s looked in ages. Definitely a WERQ for me.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Fabulous, Miss Sandy! This might’ve been my No. 1 for the night.

    • Contralto

That gown is spectacular, and she looks wonderful.

    • e jerry powell

One thing concerned me: so many trains dragging on a wet carpet. All of them are lovely, but how many hems were completely soaked?

    • webslice33

she has never looked so good…..a WERQ for me!!

    • MsC

The color and drape of the fabric were fabulous, the accessories were wonderful, hair and makeup were great (don’t love the matchy-matchy nails, but that’s a teeny quibble). The dress is wonderful in so many ways, but the fit is what made it awesome. Look at the bust — no gapping, no mashing. Perfect.

    • Alfred Cox

Best she’s ever looked. She needs to refer to this outfit every time she steps out for a big red carpet event.

    • Kimberlini

I’m not feeling this one. Don’t like the mermaid hair, pale lip or the wrinkles across the hips.

    • guest2visits

Definitely a serious, formal, Hollywood kind of gown. The color, the fit; perfect.
I thought the deep indigo evoked a connection with the movie.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Great color, great hair.

    • lillyvonschtupp

It looks better in the pictures than on tv. She’s stunning. My favorite look of the night behind Lupita.

    • livesarah

Better than Kate Hudson, and she got a WERQ. I love the colour on her.

    • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

      Color is making me drool.

    • KinoEye

Honestly, this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. Wonderful. Though I did get tired of the camera cutting to her clapping every single time Gravity won something. Now that I think on it, they used her as a reaction shot way more than anyone else, and not just for Gravity. Good thing she looked great.

    • peachy

stunning.sandy, next year get a room at the hotel next door. get ready there and walk over. eliminates those wrinkles and creases that scar an otherwise spectacular look.

    • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

Lovely hair. But the dress makes her body look… thick.
