It’s that wrap thing that makes me hesitate. It’s too much fabric for her.

      • Jessica Freeman

She had it so tight when she presented with Bob last night I wasn’t sure how the dress was constructed. I would find it to be a pain in the ass all night long.

      • Kristin McNamara

If you hold your hand up to the screen and cover the left side of all these photos, the gown is a vision! She looks beautiful, but leave the fussiness at home. Wish she just let the wrap part drape down the back of the dress…

        • calimon

and the draping in the back of the dress completely obscures and I would argue obliterates any shape the main part of the dress is accentuating.

    • KT

      ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

    • BayTampaBay

The color does nothing for her.

    • VioletFem

She should have left the shawl at home.

    • Sleepy Guy

Counselor Troi as Goddess of Empathy… She looks lovely, but arm sling thing is a no.. and the belt is messy

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

THAT was the most fabulously obscure reference.

      • Kirstin McAulay

Love love love that reference….. superb – and dead on!

      • golden_valley

        Brilliant analogy!

      • DesertDweller79

I’m late in commenting, but oh my God. That was the best reference ever!

    • AnaRoW

While it’s not perfect, I like it overall. I remember how much trouble she had dressing her body after the birth of her first kid with all of the too-tight sheaths. She’s doing much better this time around.

    • Alyssa

The arm fabric would have been better as a train, methinks. Also, I’d prefer this in a rich color…this pale pink isn’t doing her any favors.

    • jenuwefa

Way too long…look at the back shot – she’s tripping all over the hem….

    • hunt3002

I feel like this would be way better preggo couture.

      • sisterb67

My question: *IS* it preggo couture? She was doing an awful lot of midsection covering last night, especially when turning sideways. Perhaps there’s a little Bardem Bun in the oven?

        • FrigidDiva

That’s what I was wondering too. I didn’t want to sound snarky, but this just doesn’t seem like her usual choice for a gown, she usually goes with something much more structured. This diaphonous look just seems like it’s hiding something.

        • Jessica Freeman

I think she just had her second last summer. Its possible, but not likely.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

            Seriously?! She’s got 2 children? Why wasn’t I informed?

            • Jessica Freeman

I think she’s one of the few celebrities that believes in a true private life. She never confirmed her pregnancies (I don’ think) even when visibly about to pop, nor did she announce the births.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I remember one pregnancy, but I didn’t know about a second.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I was wondering who would be the first to ask the question!

      • kimmeister

The way the belt rides high on the side where the bow is makes it look like she has an asymmetrical baby bump.

    • Glam Dixie

I do love pale pink and black and I’m living for all of the jeweled head-bands. It’s a lot of fabric, but overall I’m liking this, you can’t deny she looks lovely.

    • MaggieMae

Penelope Cruz, you are a beautiful woman, this is the Oscars, and if you want people to look at you like a movie star, you need to BRING IT.
This dress is NOT it. Oh, it’s pretty, but save it for the next diplomat dinner you’re invited to.

    • lexilexi

The only thing I want to see on her arm is her hubby.

      • alyce1213

They are absolutely the most gorgeous couple.

    • Sara__B

If she untied the sloppy belt, would the whole thing fall apart?

    • Introspective

she’s beautiful. the dress overwhelms. saw her from behind on the RC and at first glance I wondered if she was pregnant with all that fabric… not the greatest thing given how pregnant she actually isnt.

    • butterflysunita

I don’t really like the dress. The belt is weird and it’s a bit bedsheety. On the other hand, I think she looks stunning. From neck up is very beautiful.

    • formerlyAnon

I love the basic dress. It says elegance in an old school way, to me. But maybe less wrap/no wrap? (ETA: the belt would be perfect if it lacked the element of fuzziness I think I’m seeing. But I’ll take it. I could see Audrey Hepburn in this, though her belt would have been a wide grosgrain ribbon, or its upscale equivalent.)

    • alyce1213

In the minority here — I love it. Haute couture meets Hollywood glamour and not a sequin in sight. I love pale pink and black.
She’s working it. Love the hair and earrings too.

      • Corsetmaker

I’m with you, I think it’s lovely. Very old school. It’s a colour combination I have a soft spot for too.

      • willworktomorrow

Totally agree. And that color combination is one of my all time favorites. She is stunning.

      • AViewer44

I totally agree. I was with fashion-biz friends last night and we all loved it.

      • ElaineMarie34

I completely agree. She’s gorgeous and I love the earrings and the pink and black.

    • Gatto Nero

Classically beautiful, head to toe. I love the colors; the contrast works well on her, with her dark hair and eyes.
That’s a lot of fabric, however. She’s handling it well, but still.

    • decormaven

She’s got the presence to pull off this much swaddling.

    • Pennymac

I thought this was one of the most disappointing looks last night. *ducks head*

    • Qitkat

A tasty confection from the front, with a hint of sophistication. But I don’t care at all for the back draping. It’s very Grecian. That was a standard look in the past I think. Oooh, I forgot to mention, lovely earrings. Lots of good ear choices last night.

    • Jessica Freeman

I think without the draping fabric over here right arm & loss of black bow/ribbon, this would have been great. It’s a good color for her.

    • FancyPhilly

I ran into Bed, Bath, and Beyond on my way here. The pink sheets were on sale. I can’t sew.

    • 3boysful

      To-ga! To-ga!
The ribbon belt saves it, but it’s really a no-sew snooze.

    • marlie

It’s another sheet with a black belt to hold it up. Plus, the belt looks sloppy and lopsided.

    • ChelseaNH

Looks like a dress for a pregnant woman. What if Kerry Washington had worn this?

    • Cassidy Olsen

This would make a beautiful maternity gown.

    • MilaXX

This is draping done right. I loved it.

    • Anna

Her face is lovely, but this is a toga meets a baby sling.

    • VivianAdvanced

Why did they make Oscar (background, pic 2) wear clothes?

    • Danielle West

the wrap around the arm is just too much for me.

    • Molly

She looks trapped in a bed sheet. Like she had to escape a building really quick-like, with only sheet and a curtain pull to hold it up.

    • nomothetes

Animal house toga party is all I see.

    • Emily Smith

She was there? Totally had no idea she was there.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

There were A LOT of dull, boring, basic and safe gowns at this year’s ceremony. To say I was underwhelmed is an understatement.

    • Akemi

I…kind of hate everything about this.
Too much fabric, that sash/bow is terrible, that is not a good color for her, etc.

    • Janet B

Too much floaty fabric, I don’t think this suits her. Plus it’s too long and the black ribbon looks askew.

      Very nice jewelry.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She does look like a goddess, especially with that hair. I think it’s lovely and she’s pulling it off.

    • Stubenville

      Looks like lovely lingerie. Next!

    • jw_ny

      Pretty in pink :)

I actually quite like this, but the black tie at her waist…idk…it’s rather wonky and abrupt. She is a goddess tho, so may as well go full out for it…which she did.

    • KayEmWhy

Toga, Toga, Toga! The dresses were dull and boring this year. I was underwhelmed.

    • styrch

She looks like she’s going for an updated Columbia Pictures mascot look.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I thought this was lovely on her. The perfect presenter’s gown, as in “I’m not here to win anything or take any spotlight, just gonna show up pretty and polished and let the other ladies have their flashy and their Me! Me! Me!”

    • kategs

      gawjus.

    • Contralto

      She looks flawless, the bitch.

    • bertkeeter

Gladys says to Ruth “It was such a lovely wedding! And didn’t the mother of the bride look just gorgeous?” Okay…?

    • E. D.

Blech. Hate the waistband not being straight and that color is so blah on her.

    • Sunraya

Too much, plus the hair thing, reminds me of Zefferelli’s Romeo and Juliet.

    • webslice33

      she’s a goddess – she looks really great…

    • Alfred Cox

Mmmmmmm. Its fine. She always wears things that make her look so old, though. Her gay needs to scream at her words like “glam! beauty! sex appeal!” not “severe! old! and generic!”

    • frannyprof

Get rid of that extra fabric. What a pain in the a$$ to have to drag that thing around all night.

    • Fred Vaughn

      FUG, in a goddess-gone-awry way…

    • kalisa

      She always looks like royalty.

    • icm

most beautiful girl at the toga party.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

At least it was interesting! I loved the pink with her coloring. I loved the drama.

    • elzatelzabelz

The right side is pretty, the left is just weird. Wasn’t that annoying? To have to hold half of your dress all night?

    • MannahattaMamma

What is is like to walk through the world and be so beautiful? Does it hurt her to look out those eyes and see the rest of us mortals?

    • Jacob Bowen

To me that clutch looks like a camera case with the tassel as the wrist strap…I ALMOST like the dress, but she looks a bit wrapped up in the sheets, beautiful sheets at that.

    • EEKstl

Love ballet pink and black. She looked stunning.

    • smh4748

The color makes it seem a little young, and the hair is really matronly. But she’s so beautiful, none of that really matters.

    • demidaemon

      It’s very toga-esque. I’m pretty certain that’s a bad thing.

    • bringbackbeatles

I don’t know who it was, but somebody in the TLounge commented that they kept expecting her to ask, “Isn’t my dress a confection?” For some reason that absolutely nailed it for me. Everyone can see she’s a beautiful woman, but this dress is distracting from that instead of enhancing it. It’s not a horrible dress or anything, it’s just too much fabric for her or something. It’s wearing her.

    • AnneElliot

Love her but the belt is making my eyes twitch. Do not like the pale pink with the black AT ALL. Hair is a little matronly. She’s starting to remind me of Sophia Loren. Not her best.

    • diamond dog

from the front – nice. from the back – a very big diper.

    • GillianHolroyd

Love this; love the sari influence and Sophia Loren vibe, sadly, the back view is a little sloppy.

    • peachy

she’s very pretty, but dang, she stands like a man.
