Oscars 2014: Meryl Streep in Lanvin

Posted on March 03, 2014

Attagirl, Mary Louise. Attagirl.

Meryl Streep attends the 86th Annual Academy Awards held at the Dolby theater in Hollywood, California in Lanvin.

When the only thing we can think to say against it is “Mmmm. One less bracelet,” then you know Miss Meryl has knocked this one out of the park. This is everything she wants in a gown; drapey, comfortable, a little dramatic and with a little bit of elegant shoulder to give it some oomph. Love the funky belt and jewelry (even if we do think there’s a skosh too much of it). And the black skirt paired with that blousey top is flattering and a little chic. Love the makeup and hair. Very “grande dame” without being imperious about it. We heard some bitching that her hair was a little grandma, but we didn’t see it that way. She looks more like a mature Hitchcock blonde than a grandma to us.

And if you’re loving our Oscars red carpet bitchery, you might consider checking out our new book, darling! “A hilarious critique of celebrity culture,” they called it! We’re proud. And shameless.

  • Cackle, Meryl, cackle! I like to picture her laughing to Emma Roberts and Julianne Moore for pulling off Lanvin.

    • I think she’s never more deliciously lovely than when she’s laughing.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Hear, hear! She laughs with a passion and lets it light up her face.

      • conniemd

Back in her early days she never seemed to smile and have much fun. I like her so much better now.

  • Ashleigh

YES! Agreed to all of that…and, as much as I dig glasses, I like that she popped in the contacts.

  • @Biting Panda

    Killin it!!

  • Danielle

  • alyce1213

Gorgeous. Extremely tasteful and lovely “I’m not winning this time, but I AM HERE” dress.

On another note: Anyone see pics of Reese? OMG. Please, uncles — do her.

    • lexilexi

Yes… Oh Please…. we’ll have a field day with that look. What WAS she thinking?

      • KateShouldBeWorking

I had to look that up and oof, y’all weren’t kidding.

    • Sunraya

Was she even there? I saw an after party pic in a black dress, but nothing from the actual ceremony.

    • Sunraya

Jeez!!!! Not even side boob, almost total boob!! She showed as much as Heidi Klum, and that is saying something. I can’t stand her, so I am glad she looked foolish. Yes, I am mean.

      • FrigidDiva

My motto is, it’s not mean if it’s true (I justify a lot of catty things I say by using that). If it’s true she looked like a fool then you’re not really mean, you’re just being honest. 😉

    • Introspective

googled it. my eyes are now seared by side boob.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

She looks comfortable but also like she intended to be there. To me, she often looks like she dropped by the red carpet on the way home from a luncheon.

  • You know I disagree with you almost always about matching bracelets. My only problem with these is that they are too closely matched to the belt. God she looks good.

  • hughman

All she needs is to be cradling a book and holding a torch aloft. And frankly, who would complain about her in NY Harbor?

    • Evan

And that clutch kind of looks like a book, at least on my iPhone it does.

  • B_C_J

    She looks WONDERFUL!! Tasteful, elegant!

  • Grumpy Girl

I so agree that is NOT grandma hair. That is what hair should be at a formal event like this, and hers looks lovely.

  • Glam Dixie

Dat belt! It elevates the look so much, I love it. She looks fantastic.

  • sugarkane105

Love it. I feel like this is the kind of look Julia Roberts’ Globes dress was going for, and missed terribly. Meryl’s face is aged to perfection – thank god she hasn’t filled and pulled her face like so many have.

  • Gatto Nero

Regal. She has lovely shoulders; so glad she’s showing off one of her nicest features. This is a perfect look for her.

    • greyhoundgirl

And when she shook them at Pharell as she danced in her seat she was fantastic and sexy.

  • Richard Banger

The Oscars seems to be the only event that Mary Louise takes seriously, fashion-wise. She steps it up on Oscar night every year, and I love her for that.

    • demidaemon

As it should be. If she’s going to kill it only one night of the year, this is the night.

  • lexilexi

Best she’s ever looked… but the hair truly is granma to me, and not in a good way.

I thought she looked great! Lanvin suits her well……

  • JasmineAM

LOVED her shimmy with Pharell (as well as Lupita’s and Amy’s).

  • Sofia Bentivoglio

i’d love to see her with a chic, modern haircut.

  • uprightcitizen

Really perfect. She looks like she owns the room, and can therefore afford to be gracious and charming to everyone in her presence. Her expressions say it all … she knows she killed it.

  • MaggieMae

She seems like such a content, happy person. I want to be her friend!

  • beebee10

Totally Gorgeous!! Love how soft and luscious the blouse looks.

  • jw_ny

Elegant and sophisticated…nothing “grandma” about this or her hair. Love the jeweled belt!

I think she came dressed expecting to win (although I’m sort of glad she didn’t since I thought her performance was over the top.)

  • MilaXX

On someone else I’d find this a bit plain even with the bracelets and belt. On Meryl it works. Not a WERQ, but a good look nonetheless.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I love it. Last night I thought the hair was too flat, not too Grandma, but today it looks better. Perfect look for her all around.

  • Anna

Absolutely regal. And Meryl losing herself to dance with Pharrell was one of the top moments of the night for me.

    • Evan

She was a really good sport last night, with that and Ellen coming up to her for the selfie.

      • Anna

She’s just so fucking cool, I love her for that. Unlike some of her peers who need to constantly remind you that they are a SERIOUS. ACTOR. EVERYONE (ahem, Leonardo DiCaprio).

  • Carla_Charlton

She looks so appropriate. And she seems to be really good-natured — I love that about her.

  • bessann28

Loved this look. And thank god she has not succumbed to the plastic surgery Joker face.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I felt downright sad for Kim Novak last night. But, on the bright side, I now know where the line is drawn in regards to too much filler. When you can’t seem to form words correctly, you have too much filler.

      • AzSportsGirl

I agree. However, I thought Matthew was charming and gentle and so very kind with her. He melted my heart.

        • sagecreek

He was, indeed, and I am no MM fan, but he was so kind.

      • Call me Bee

Although a doctor pipid up on Twitter and said she may have had a small stroke, which is why it was hard for her to form words. She still seemed to be more lucid than Liz Taylor when they trotted her out several years ago to present something or another.

  • Tatiana Luján

I disagree on the makeup: that orchid eyeshadow and the spider-legs eyelashes weren’t flattering, but everything else is great.

    • kimmeister

Those weirdly spaced false lashes were a misstep for sure.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

The only comment I can make is about her hair. I like her hair up, but I think it looks much prettier and softer when she doesn’t pull her bangs back, too. See: Meryl at the Oscars, 2010 version.

  • Anathema_Device

I love her ease in whatever she is wearing. This is a particularly good look for her.

  • H.S.

Absolutely gorgeous. The dress is superb, and I love her bling. I got nothin’ but looooove.

  • nowlo

She looks fab. Love the jeweled belt. And I would have put both bracelets on one wrist rather than getting rid of one.

  • Akemi

    Loving it!

  • luludexter

I love this look so much, because it is so *her* AND she looks so amazing and elegant.

  • AzSportsGirl

I know we are not supposed to body snark but whoever that is behind her in the gold gown is shockingly thin.

  • MikeW_Vegas

I love Meryl and she looks fantastic here. I also love seeing her smile and laugh. She appears to be genuinely having a lot of fun. Especially last night with Ellen and Pharrell!

  • Jessica Freeman

So classy. The bracelets are a touch matchy, but its such a minor quibble.

  • Trickytrisha

Eh, it’s another Meryl patented “I’m not about to do fancy dress up” outfit. It works for her, but it’s always a bit of a let down. At least she’s wearing a bra with her off the shoulder top, unlike Liza M. My eyes are still stinging from that.

  • LittleKarnak

You know what I like best? She actually has movement in her face and wrinkles around her eyes!! Wrinkles Are The New Black!!!

  • majorbedhead

I just love her. She looks lovely here. Nothing earth-shattering, but that’s fine because she’s Meryl.

Watching her shoulder shimmy with Pharrel was delightful. She seems like someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously.

  • Daisy Walker

“Mature Hitchcock blonde” is perfect! Loved this look, especially the belt.

  • nancymae

It would appear that she has found her wheelhouse. This reminded me of her Chris March look from a few years ago.

  • butterflysunita

Love it. And love her facial expressions.

  • Zaftiguana

With more volume, it’d be mature Hitchcock blonde. As is, it’s a little grandma and the one thing not really working for me. Digging that belt, though.

  • Contralto

I love her, and she looks marvelous.

  • CPK1

I completely agree about the hair. I didn’t see it as grandma at all. Mature Hitchcock blonde is a perfect analogy

  • webslice33

she looks lovely and looked like she was having a good time even in the ceremony..

  • stubbornthoughts

I think she looks like Classic Meryl Streep, with a capital C. Her smile is incredibly infectious.

  • Andrea

My favorite hairstyle on Meryl is actually how she wore it as Miranda Priestly a la The Devil Wears Prada. I wish she would adopt that in real life.

    • Mojone

I keep thinking about that too. She looked so stylish as Miranda, and she always looks just a touch dowdy as herself. I think she’s doing it on purpose, that it’s part of her brand to come across as unassuming and not preoccupied with fashion. I would love to see her in something a bit edgy.

  • Linderella

Didn’t get this one at all. If not for the bare shoulder, it would look very off-the-rack and Mother of the Bride to me.

  • Call me Bee

Beautiful, though it seems not quite special enough. Maybe with a bigger, flashier earring it would be better. But I’ll love Miss Meryl no matter what she’s wearing.

  • Sunraya

It’s Meryl. She is so beyond this, but looks nice enough. That’s fine for her.

  • SierraDelta

There’s such intelligence and passion in her face that she’s compelling, no matter what she wears. She has dignity but it’s the kind that comes from knowing herself well. I always get the feeling that she grew up in a home where she was loved and that she’s been able to surround her children with that, too. There’s a confidence that comes with that kind of upbringing, an ability to weather storms because you can put them in perspective. Or shimmy unselfconsciously in front of millions of people, if and when the need arises.

    • alyce1213

I love what you said here.

  • ashtangajunkie

Loved this look – I especially love the photos of her laughing.

  • decormaven

Best look she’s sported since that Chris March gown. Love it to bits, and love her brio & zest shown in these shots.

  • Stubenville

Damn – she makes it look effortless.

  • nannypoo

This is beautiful. I love everything about it.

  • Kelly

not grandma hair, I don’t know whose grandma looks like that? my grandma’s had their hair done in the same helmet hair at the beauty shop every Friday. This is a mature woman’s look – very nicely done. I don’t think most people know what a graceful mature woman looks like, since everyone gets pulled so tight they look like the joker. Well done Meryl – thank you from all of us approaching mature age.

  • SophieCollier

Nice ensemble. Why does she seem to be tipping over to the (viewers’) right? Like one shoe fell off or something. I’m glad she wore something comfy because my girl Meryl tucked into some of that pizza last night. I was proud of all the ladystars who joined her.

  • Alfred Cox

Very pretty. When I saw the screen grab of her chomping on some pizza, I thought this look looked awful. Seeing it in pictures fully, though, it looks absolutely beautiful. And very Meryl. She’s not a fashionista, not even close, but she can look damn good. Good job.

  • Alfred Cox

And the belt is TO DIE.

  • Truthiness2U

Love how Meryl looked, and loved that she obviously loved it. Too often she gets it horribly awry, but this is comfortable looking, but still elegant and flattering. And I loved the belt. Great touch.

  • formerlyAnon

    “Mature Hitchcock blonde” is PERFECT.

I imagine her standing there thinking “Suck it haters. I’m not wearing a corset and my extremities all have blood flow – and I look as good as you do. And I’ve ingested carbohydrates in the last week. There might even have been butterfat.”

  • Pennymac

I want this to be BE ME moment. That pic of her head back, laughing, thinking “Suck it, Bitches”. Thats who I want to be.

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

    I love this!

  • Scimommy

Perfect. Hasn’t looked this good since Chris March days.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

No way Mary Louise had grandma hair-my grandma, and bless her memory, wore those ghastly hairnets over her hair-now THAT is grandma hair.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Just love how she radiates a certain joyously bemused detachment…. at 18 nominations she is just there to be there…win? lose? she is just loving the moment- no 30 different fittings. This outfit is so utterly perfect for her- why shoot for the bleachers? She IS Meryl. suck it!

  • ChelseaNH

I’d like this better with some more color to it.

  • In_Stitches

She’s serving Johnny Weir’s face. It’s the confident face of knowing you look fabulous with a hint of something more behind the eyes….a mystery.

  • guest2visits

Stylish choice, great fit, and taking it all in stride…I thought she was stunning last night. Great presence and sense of humor throughout the long, long night.

  • OffToSeeHim

See, I think she’s going Hillary Clinton here. And not in a good way.

    • Little_Olive

Really? Hillary would never go blousey -and I din’t think I associate her with off-the-shoulderness. I feel she is just below Barbara Bush in the cardboard-dress-up-doll suits (ugh). Maybe I’m stuck in 90’s Hil.

      • OffToSeeHim

My bad, I was reading the comments about her hair and I was just talking about that. You’re right, Hillary would never go off the shoulder. Of course, she’s not a movie star either, so the standard is a little different.

  • lillyvonschtupp

She knocked it out the box! Plus, didn’t she eat some pizza?

    • Vtg Fashion Library

She did. And she danced with Pharrell. And got in on the selfie. I think she’s been in the front row of the Oscars enough that she just says “screw it, I’m having fun.”

      • lillyvonschtupp

Cool! Oh Mary Louise, I wanna go bar hopping with her!

  • Qitkat

I think she somehow just knew she would not win last night, and went for a great comfortable look with style and fun. She will always be on my Fabulous Dames list.

  • EEKstl

Gorge. What a great neckline for her.

  • Shawn EH

No problem with the bangles, because she skipped the necklace (which many others did not) and they match the chic black and white theme. Lanvin is her friend!

  • bringbackbeatles

She just radiates this beautiful spirit. I have a feeling that she is very down to earth and certainly fun to be with. I love how she easily laughs at herself and how she did that little dance shake with Pharell. She’s always been stunning and she always will be no matter what she wears, but this really works for her.

  • Little_Olive

Man, I love this woman. J’adore when she plays her fashion A game. Love a woman of a certain age not forced in spanx and disguising her arms in lace sleeves.

  • carnush

    Personal best, hands down.

  • suzq

My only quibble is that the cowl and gather on the left side made her lean to the left in most of her shots.

  • Daktari100

  • cocohall

Honestly, you look at her here and she looks like she sneezes kittens and bedazzled rainbows. And her character in Osage County was just so full of bile. She is remarkable. I think this look is lovely. Never change, Mary Louise.

  • peachy

    right on point… nicely done.
