Yes, yes, this is all very nice, but let’s talk about his U2 photobomb.

    • That was fantastic.

      • Rhonda Shore

        Absolutely brilliant!

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

Amaaaaaaaaaazing, as was Adam Clayton’s jacket.

    • That was an equation of moment + opportunity that he couldn’t possibly have planned.

    • Alyssa

Love his expression…also, that jump looked pretty impressive!

      • Danielle

He looks 1 million percent pleased with himself. Bless.

    • lundibleu

      That was flipping brilliant!

    • gabbilevy

He also managed to sneak into one of Ellen’s other (as in, not the giant, super-retweeted) one. It was so adorably “Look! I’m here too! And in two of the movies!! #almostfamous”

      • Sue_Asponte

I wish she’d post that one!

      • amazinggrace

four of the movies! the hobbit & STID were also nominated in technical categories 🙂

    • misstressofsylar

I loved that pic of him and Chiwetel getting all teary eyed at Lupita’s speech. My crush deepens. They are such sweethearts!

    • decormaven

This upped his stock by 1,000%.

  • Your makeup really shouldn’t crack like that. And I don’t love the fit on his jacket. A little roomy?

    • toriadoria

You mean his forehead wrinkles? ‘Cause if makeup isn’t supposed to crack like that then I’ve been doing makeup wrong my whole life. Which would not surprise me, but would delight me: what should I be doing differently???

      • The way his makeup is setting into his forehead wrinkles and around his eyes. My makeup only does that if I am wearing too many layers of too heavy a coverage and no primer. It’s quite aging – he’s younger than me and I think has less sun damage.

        • Liz

Unfortunately he has some scarring on his forehead from makeup he wore during Frankenstein so that may be part of it.

          • Paige

            What? Really? Details?

          • misstressofsylar

If I’m not mistaken, his forehead got burned from the make up so big ouch there for Cumby.

          • Liz

If you google his name + Frankenstein scars there are some photos and an interview in the LA Times will come up. There are some spots of discolored skin on his forehead.

          • Paige

            Thanks, Liz. You’re right.

          • Even still, he looks overpowdered. There are ways to get matte skin without having it get cakey like that.

        • ConnieBV

I think it’s bronzer. He is way paler than he looked last night.

  • Aidan B

Everything appears to be in order. I like the texture in the tie.

    • DaringMiss

And the vest. Gives it a bit of punch.

      • Aidan B

  • Heather

I can do without the orange eyeshadow. Otherwise, all good.

  • alyce1213

Come here, let me fix that tie for you, you charming young man.

  • DTLAFamilies

I’m not a Cumberbitch but I think he looks really good here aside from the pancake makeup. It must be hell to find the right foundation for someone that pale.

    • It’s really not.

    • Jessica Freeman

Mere mortal here, equally as pale. It comes in the correct colors at my drug store. The pancake make up is better than the bronze/contouring someone did to him during his pole dance.

      • Ginger

Yup…another pale chick here. I never had an issue finding the correct color foundation when I used to wear it (I, thankfully, quit wearing it a few years ago and now only wear the mineral powder).

        • River

I want you all to tell me where you found this magical pale person makeup! It has been impossible for me to find makeup that blends properly and doesn’t look weird around my eyes and on my forehead. 🙁

          • Ginger

Ditch the foundation, my friend. I use drugstore mineral powder, occasionally reapply during the day, and I always have people comment on how good my skin looks. Plus, it doesn’t mask my freckles, which is a bonus in my book. It took me a very long time to appreciate and love my freckles. Now I want to show them off!

          • River

Indeed…mineral powders have been the best bet, you’re right. I think I sometimes foundation looks quicker/simpler but it has *never* worked for me.

    • DTLAFamilies

But there’s a difference between civilian makeup and red carpet makeup. Something that would look good IRL would completely wash out under red carpet conditions, yet if you put dark enough makeup on him so his features can be seen in photos, it can get a bit mask-like or orange. And unlike pale ladystars he can’t be helped out by a dramatic eye or lip. That’s why I think it’s challenging.

  • MilaXX

He has truly upped his fashion game. His suits fit, and he’s made peace with his hair.

    • mshesterp

The hair is definitely working here, and I’ve had my doubts about it in the past…

  • E2_Remote

I feel like the coat is a bit too long and the fact that I can see his top shirt button behind his tie is bugging me. Get it together Cumberbatch, you’re better than this!

    • demidaemon

I agree on the coat. The proportions seem a little bit off there.

  • Akemi

His tie is bugging me. I’m sure it is ~supposed to be like that, but it is bugging me.

    • formerlyAnon

An awful lot of his photos have the tie knot too low.

  • M_E_S

He can photobomb me ANY time.

  • hunt3002

He wears way too much make-up on the RC. Let the freckles show. They’re better than a slightly crackling orange.

  • I didn’t even notice the clothes. Sorry Spencer Hart…!

  • Scimommy

Aw, Benedict rated his own post! (whiteboard, but still…) Thanks, TLo!

    • Jessica Freeman

They know the BKs loves some Benny. They are kind Uncles.

  • JaCory Deon

The clothes are fine, it’s the hair and makeup that is too much. Such a high-headed man doesn’t need hair to add to the length of his face, nor so much pancake on that lovely, lived-in British face.

  • luludexter

this is basically his uniform, in tuxedo form…

  • uprightcitizen

Seriously no one could bother to tell him that his tie was loose like that? Anyone who’s seen him before would know that he wouldn’t intentionally walk around like that. Poor thing.

    • WendyD

Michael Fassbender fixed it for him farther down the red carpet. There are .gifs of this.

      • majorbedhead

OHMYGOD, I must find these now.

      • Sue_Asponte

        Um. Please share.

        • majorbedhead

Yes, please do. My Google fu is broken and I can’t find it.

          • Qitkat

I have no idea what this means but I think it’s hilarious.

          • majorbedhead

Google fu is the ability to answer anything using a search engine (which is Google, in my case). So when my google gu is busted, it means I can’t find what I’m looking for as quickly as I’d like.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

hello imaginary boyfriend, thank you for dressing up for me. love your imaginary girlfriend.

  • Jessica Freeman

I see none of the flaws the other BKs mentioned. Just Benny in a tux.

  • JauntyJohn

clean face, great hair, well tailored.

  • Jacob Bowen

The BEST moment of my party last night was when my best friend and I discovered her husband is a closet Cumberbitch…and now we all tease him. His face lit up when Benedict stepped on stage, and that photobomb is now his computer background.

    • demidaemon

Straight boy mancrushes are so cute.

  • Nicholas

Was very heartening to see him bawl his eyes out, when Lupita won her award.

He was delightfully un-British that day.

  • WendyD

He was my EVERYTHING last night. It was his first time at the Oscars and he looked like he was having the absolute time of his life.
He looked perfect and I loved that his errant curl had escaped in joy by the end of the night when ’12 Years’ won for Best Picture and he was on stage jumping with delight with Lupita!

    • Imasewsure

I think part of his charm is how much fun he seems to be having with his success and how much he understands the privilege of being a very very successful international actor… He has a nice “Hugh Grant” balance between upscale Brit and Hollywood which is really endearing – let’s just hope he avoids the hookers on Hollywood & Vine!

  • majorbedhead

Hello, sweetie. Your tie’s a bit crooked. Come closer and I’ll fix that for you.

  • Jacquelyn

    Flawless. That is all.

  • webslice33

looks good but no sex appeal..

    • Kristin McNamara

What pictures are you looking at?

  • Sharon Weiner

I just want to grab that tie and give it a tug.

  • Betsy

And that, my friends, is how you wear a suit!

  • ashtangajunkie

    Delightful. Always delightful.

  • Gatto Nero

I’m wondering — why are some Oscar looks in Fashion and others in Whiteboard?

    • Jessica Freeman

Whiteboard is a section TLo created a while ago. It’s kind of the middle ground where it is interesting, but no so much that TLo wants to make a full post with commentary dedicated to it, so they throw it out to the BKs to comment on.

      • Gatto Nero

        Ah — thank you!

      • not_Bridget

TLo didn’t have much to say about Benedict’s look. But he knew that he’s a favorite with many BK’s.

        • Jessica Freeman

=) I posted that somewhere down below as well.

  • Anathema_Device

Fix the tie and we’re good. Did you guys see him photobombing U2 on the red carpet? Made my love for him increase tenfold.

    • KinoEye

I just now saw this. I loathe U2 with the passion of a thousand suns, so this has made my Cumberbitch status official.

  • marlie

He needs to tighten his tie and do something with his pocket square, but his U2 photobomb was my EVERYTHING last night.

  • nannypoo

    Love this.

  • Carla_Charlton

Let me use this opportunity to note my perfect presenters list: Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan Mcgregor, Jude Law, Rufus Sewell. And if I could bring him back from the dead, I’d throw Alan Bates onto that list.

    • Cynica

I would add Alan Cummings. They should get HIM to host next year. Think of the suits!

      • Carla_Charlton

I love the idea of Alan Cummings hosting! I imagine he might lose patience with the slightly fuddy-duddy-ness of it all.

        • demidaemon

          Just slightly?

  • enchanted216

    Who is this slob?

  • formerlyAnon

As always, I have to disclaim that I don’t “get” his physical appeal, but he did seem to be having a darn good time and I love that. Also like that he hasn’t yet started taking a few years off the face – you’d think 37 would be a little soon, but looking at the photos of others . . . apparently not. The Brits seem to be a bit more conservative there, so we may have ten or fifteen years.

BUT WHY CAN’T HE LET SOMEONE PROPERLY FIX HIS TIE????!!!!!????? He held still for makeup, surely SOMEbody would have tied a properly sized knot and snugged it up to the collar if he’d let them. He’s terrible about the tie thing.

    • Pennymac

He puzzles me. I offer the same disclaimer.

    • pdquick

I think he’s had his nose narrowed. The camera angle last night made it look like he had his jawbone augmented, but I am less certain of that looking at photos today, but the nose appears narrower compared with older photos.

      • formerlyAnon

Huh. Hadn’t occurred to me, but I don’t notice such things as a rule. . I don’t know when he’d have had a nose job in the last year or two, he seems to always be either working or doing publicity, but I’ll look at his photos with a different eye to see if I see the same thing.

      • natty_bat

Given the amount of makeup, I’m betting that’s contouring. Like formerlyAnon, I don’t think he’s stopped working/appearing in public long enough in the last two years for a nose job.

      • B. Garcia

Hm! I think you’re right. There is also a difference at the tip. And it’s clearly no secret that he Botoxes like Nicole Kidman. His forehead doesn’t wrinkle the way it used to!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Perfection … except for the tie. Tighten that thing up!

  • Judy_S

If anybody who doesn’t know this already cares, the suit is Spencer Hart of Saville Row.

  • kalisa

I just love him as Sherlock but he’s really not very photogenic, is he? Someone needs to give him some instruction on posing to create a chin.

  • RuthGo

    Tighten your tie, dude.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Let me do it for you, sweetie.

  • d4divine

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Mr.cumberbatch party of one… obviously….it makes me ike him more.

  • DominoEstella

He deserves way more than Whiteboard! He’s Cumberbatch! He’s just the best.

  • imspinningaround

I pointed this out on Twitter last night: He got highlights. Would you not just DIE to see him in the chair next to you at the salon, foils in his mop?

  • Qitkat

This guy is an enigma to me. I love his look in Sherlock. I swooned like a schoolgirl with a crush with that super sexy magazine cover TLo posted a while back, and then here on the red carpet, he just looks like a cute, slightly nerdy Brit with piercing green eyes. And I don’t melt at all. What am I missing?

  • gloriana232

Fix that tie, young man. And come on. Wear a bowtie! It’s the Oscars!

  • DeTrop

Another Brit with a beautiful speaking voice. I wonder if they learn that in drama school. Anyway, he’s a keeper.

  • LostInThrace

The suit is nice. But I’m just waiting for the day when he rips of his faux faceskin to show his real AlienLizardCreatureFace and reveals the plans to bring his Overlords here to enslave us all.

  • JP

    Perfection in my eyes.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Wow. If he looked this way more often, I may actually become a Cumberbitch. 🙂

  • save_the_hobbit

Forever not understanding what anyone sees in him, besides being a dorky slightly cute British guy. But he seems like a sweet guy and I love a good photo bomb.

  • peachy

nice looking garb — although he’s always reminded me of an unborn fetus for some reason, not fully developed. weird.

  • Jacket sleeves a bit too long, and as always, he is tie-placement challenged. Overall, very nice.
