Oscars 2014: Anne Hathaway in Gucci

Posted on March 03, 2014

This is the second Anne Hathaway Oscar dress in a row that does absolutely nothing for us. This is alarming. Especially since she changed stylists in between the two dresses.

Anne Hathaway attends the 86th Annual Academy Awards held at the Dolby theater in Hollywood, California in a Gucci dress paired with Neil Lane jewelry and a Gucci clutch and heels.

It’s like, after last year’s nipstravaganza, she decided to go full on breastplate in order to avoid the same mistake. And that’s our main problem with this: the bodice is too stiff, heavy, and shapeless. We don’t care what the name is on the label sewed inside, there’s a point at which so much embellishment is forced upon a poor garment that the effect becomes a cheapening of it. To be perfectly, absolutely bitchy about it, this looks like something a D-lister wears from a designer no one heard of. It doesn’t look good enough to be Gucci, in our eyes.

And another thing: we noted that Julia Roberts is one of those people who really rocks a black, but looking at this getup, we’ve come to the conclusion that Anne isn’t. She’s a girl who needs color.

Hair and makeup are very pretty, though. And she gets points for the hooker shoes.

And if you’re loving our Oscars red carpet bitchery, you might consider checking out our new book, darling! “A hilarious critique of celebrity culture,” they called it! We’re proud. And shameless.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I… don’t know if I like it, but I’m less indiferent to this than I was to last year’s dress, if that makes any sense.

      • Introspective

its not bad. fits like a glove too. hair and makeup are stunning. but she can do better. we’ve seen her do better.

    • GinaGeo

I don’t know…the bodice was so sparkly and eye-catching on camera, I can’t help think this was a deliberate choice on her part. I said this last night: It’s a “Remember how you all hated me last year? Well, you can’t *not* look at me now, can you? That’s right, bitches.” dress.

      • gloriana232

Oh, good point. And right at her chest too. Maybe this was also a deliberate call-back to the nipple dress we all criticized.

      • Sobaika

It did look much better onstage when she was presenting. It just doesn’t photograph all that well, the bling reads as pretty cheap.

      • gdougs

        It’s a “be me” dress!

      • conniemd

Agree with you and those below. I thought it looked good when she presented. It just looked sparkly and didn’t seem heavy it all. I thought it was just some light bling or shimmery material.

    • Danielle

Loving from the neck up. Was blinded during her presentation.

    • SewingSiren

Remember all the beautiful gowns she wore when she hosted the Oscars? That was something. Gucci should stick with saddles.

      • Introspective

jesus that was hers (and zoe’s) pinnacle in terms of fashion moments. that iridescent prive??? omfg that was gorge. the tux with the glittering louboutins? FIERCE.

its almost like the bar got set too high in that moment and she might never be able to attain those heights again.

(or maybe its not that existential: she just needs to stop playing and remember what the fuck looks good on her.)

    • Karen Belgrad

Horrid for live television, under lights… Her presenting stint needed a disclaimer for epileptics!

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I have to say I kinda love it. Sparkly, classic and I love the jewellery.

      • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Omigosh, I just spotted the closeup of the emerald ring!

        • kimmeister

I clicked on it but then was instantly put off by the talons.

    • http://www.gregmce.com Greg McE

After the backlash she got last year from her acceptance speech, I feel like this was a deliberate step back. She’s a presenter so she needs something, but she’s not up for anything so she can’t look like she’s trying to draw attention away from the nominees (lest she get more backlash). It’s safe.

    • Ginger

It’s the Texan in me, y’all. I can’t help but like it. Not LOVE it, but I like it…as in “OOOOOOOOH SPARKLY!” like it.

    • Sleepy Guy

“Hi! Does everyone still hate me? Yes? ‘K bye”

    • Blair Sylvester

She is ready for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

    • 3boysful

I will have to buck the trend and say I liked this. I am a halter fan (generally flattering), and I thought this was a great choice for someone presenting b/c on the teevee, we got to see/be blinded by the interesting part of the dress while she presented. I like how the lack of cleavage is counterpointed by nice shoulders and a long rear slit.

      • Blair Sylvester

I like the front and think it is better than her oscar dress. but it is kind of awkward from the back.

      • marlie

I hate halters, and I still like this.

      • Joanne Robertson

I think she also likes halters but I am not sure they like her back but I did like the sparkle

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

        I love this! It’s not too halter-y.

      • Leah Elzinga

I feel like halters lengthen her even more, and not in a flattering way. The tall hair + long face + swan neck + halter + column dress are just all too much.

        • sagecreek

I am 5 foot nothing. I cannot conceive of being lengthened too much :)

      • Kitten Mittons

Totally agree, I really like this on her. Certainly not a personal best, but a really good showing.

      • lunchcoma

I’m not a fan of halters, but I enjoyed this too.

    • Gatto Nero

This goes a little St.-Joan-in-chain-mail for me. Not terrible; not great.

    • VioletFem

I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. It looks a little awkward in some angles. Her hair and makeup are fantastic though.

    • Chris

I disagree about her not wearing black well, I think she looks much better than Julia Roberts in that color. This dress, and much of her clothing lately, seems to be a deliberate attempt on her part to distance herself from some of the more princessy looks she used to wear. The rhinestones on the front almost read like armor they are so heavy. It all ties in with the leather pants and somewhat “tougher” look she is trying to project. It’s like the all the hate tossed at her last year really affected her so she is trying to almost reinvent herself as someone less gooey sweet.

    • muelonil

Particularly paired with her short haircut, I don’t think the halter silhouette does her many favors.

      • Constant Reader

I agree. I couldn’t think of the right way to say it. I love her short hair (I used to rock a super-short cut myself back when my jawline was a tad firmer), but the combination of the breastplate bodice, the halter neck, and her short hair is severe and unflattering.

    • BobStPaul

      I think she looks great.

      • Tatiana Luján

        So do I.

    • Jessica Freeman

It does look cheap, even the fabric. The way it was blinding in the lights was a bit much as well. I can appreciate sparkles with the best of them, but this was a bit much.

    • marlie

I’m going to have to disagree with the Uncles on this one. I thought the dress was really pretty. I love the “breastplate” look, and the dress doesn’t seem stiff or heavy to me. I think Annie looks great.

      • ampg

I agree – I think the low-key edginess of this look and the visual interest made it a great “I’m just here to present” look.

    • Susan Velazquez

      Y’all hating. I love this.

    • Glam Dixie

I actually kind of like it, it looked gorgeous when she came out on stage last night. It’s not perfect but I can’t hate it.

      • Tracy_Flick

I actually like it too, and I’m no fan of hers. I think it’s interesting and fits perfectly.

    • deelup

Anyone hazard a guess on what lipstick she is wearing? I need it!

      • MilaXX

Try Chanel matte in either L’ECLATANTE or LA MALICIEUSE

    • ralish

Twenty thousand times better than her dress last year. I can’t get myself worked up about this gown one way or another. She looks pretty, but unremarkable. I do wish she’d grow her hair out a bit.

    • Carrie

The Bedazzled breastplate was a major distraction while she was presenting. This just wasn’t a good look!

    • another_laura

She made little impression on me last night which is probably THE WORST reaction, for her, that I could have had.

    • French_Swede

If there is one thing this has going for it, it’s the fit … perfect.

    • Capt. Renault

Gucci by Buckminster Fuller held such promise…

    • charlotte

I don’t hate it as much as last year’s, but I don’t really like it either.

    • BayTampaBay

This is nothing compared to that disaster she wore last year.

Anne has fairly good taste so maybe this is the case of a dress that looked good or even great in person but did not photograph well.

      • demidaemon

Which is exactly why stars should get in the habit of photo testing their looks.

    • http://www.bethposts.blogspot.com/ Buffy

I can’t help but hear Michael Kors saying “Disco Ball”

    • MilaXX

I didn’t like all this black on her and that bodice looks so heavy that I expect the crystal to come falling off in one big sheet. It looked a little better when she came out to present and the lights hit in, bit overall I wasn’t impressed by this.

    • Jacquelyn

      So. Many. Sparkles. *blinded*

    • alyce1213

It’s nice on Anne, but Julia Roberts really should have worn this bold dress.
I like that she switched it up a little, it’s encouraging.

    • Alyssa

Hair, makeup, and jewelry are beautiful…meh on the dress. Not as bad as last year, but not amazing.

    • Mrs. Julien

Fashion Peoples: What is the terminal prognosis for the super high heels? I’m hoping for soon.

      • demidaemon

Prognosis: Will probably outlive even the youngest BK. Sorry.

    • teensmom99

I liked it at first glance on the RC & then saw that it didn’t flatter.

    • decormaven

The bodice ornamentation was blinding onscreen during her presentation. The shape of the bodice and its bling reminded me of some of the runway getups in George Michael’s “Too Funky” video. Not her best look, but much improved from last year’s selection.

    • Danielle West

I don’t hate it, but I’m definitely bored by it. I do think it feeds into her current “bad-ass” Anne she’s been trying to be.

    • Janet B

      The embellishments obscure her waist.
The silhouette is nice enough, but the dress needs to lose the embellishments and be given to Julia Roberts who can wear a minimal look well.

    • MaggieMae

I have problems with the neckline. I don’t think that style suits her.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I envy who got to eat the Hershey Kisses needed to make that top.

    • Kate4queen

I just don’t like that neckline on almost anyone, it puts the rest of the body out of alignment somehow…

    • Betsy

I don’t hate it. It seems rather appropriate on a night where she wasn’t nominated and things weren’t supposed to be all about her. Then again, once she started presenting, her “I’m a serious artist” voice outed her usual attention-seeking.

    • snarkykitten

I must say, I am glad she’s committed to the pixie.

    • Tatiana Luján

      I loved this look.

    • Griffinqueen

Forgive me, Bitter Uncles. I kind of love it. I want a crystal breastplate a la “Fabulous Warrior Queen”.

    • Laura Renee

Her hair and make-up are fantastic, and I’m intrigued by those mini-talons.

    • Akemi

      Meh.

    • Stubenville

Imagine this with just the belt made up of the triangular crystals. Better, no?

    • sagecreek

I’m in the minority, but I like it. I feel like Anne is trapped in a box between “she tried too hard!” and “she didn’t try hard enough!” I still like the hair, I’m about to whack mine off. Alas, I don’t have her face, but there ya go.

      • IMNAngryLiberal

Also liked it .. admittedly it got a little disco ball when she was presenting, but I thought it looked great on the red carpet.

    • altalinda

The dress that says, I’m just here to do my job, hand out the award, and go. I’m not looking for attention.

    • altalinda

      Who’s the ex-stylist and who’s the new?

      • MilaXX

Rachel Zoe was her stylist. I forget the name of the new person.

    • Blair Sylvester

this dress is a bit defensive. Like yeah I know people hate me but My heart is protected by armor bitch so suck it

    • http://anibundel.wordpress.com/ anibundel

On TV, the bodice sparkled like a trump casino. That’s when I knew it was worse that we realized.

    • Shawn EH

Strangely unflattering. Grace Jones she’s not.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Oh, now I could see Grace Jones rocking the bejesus out of this gown.

        • Shawn EH

I think Anne probably needs the full on Thierry Mugler to make it all work for her.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Now I’m up for Hathaway doing the full Mugler~

            • Shawn EH

Well, he did have a thing for that other Catwoman, Julie Newmar, is what I’m thinking.

    • SketchyCat

“It must be so hard for you, [Anne]. I mean, having to decide whether to wear the little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress, or… the little Gucci dress!”
“I know! Why don’t you wear the [floor-length] Gucci dress [with the disco ball bib]?”
      “Good idea. Thanks, [stylist].”

    • E2_Remote

Hmmm….yeah. The boobage here is not good. Olga and Helga could have definitely used more support. She’s way too young to look that droopy.

    • Sweetpea176

I like that she’s keeping her hair short — I love how it looks on her. I wish Emma Watson had done the same.

    • Kelly

she is a petite person and the breastplate makes her look big, in a not good way, and she needed better support – it makes her girls look too low. I am surprised her stylist or team didn’t do a lighting test – as when she stood on stage presenting the sparkle off the breastplate was awful – you could tell the camera person was trying to figure out how to stop it. AND your dress should not use the word Breastplate

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I like this dress, but it does have problems. The bodice is too heavy and is not kind to her shape. She does look beautiful.

    • msdamselfly

Looked really pretty when she was up on stage and the lights were reflected off of the bodice

    • Judy_S

I did not think it looked cheap or tacky. Too difficult to look good in, and she did..

    • MsALVA

Her bodice looks like a tribute to Disney’s Epcot Center futurama globe thing. I hate it.

    • JaCory Deon

Looks like a great big nothing to me. Someone with stronger coloring and hair could make this work;on her, she just blends into the background.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

That emerald ring is gorgeous. It’s my favorite part of the whole outfit.

    • Dan_In_NYC

I don’t love this, but I can say that I am getting far less of a “I DESPERATELY WANT YOU TO LIKE ME” vibe from her lately. It’s nice.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Anne was so ubitiquous last Oscar season doing the awards poledance that she must have enjoyed not having to partake of that this time around.

    • Sally Spannagle

She needs to embrace her femininity a little bit — her dress last year was so straight/column-like and so is this. Come on, Anne. This is the Oscars!!

    • Glenn Gore

      WAY too much Bedazzling!

    • formerlyAnon

I”d call this very good. Not great. There’s a feeling of it being a “generic big occasion gown” not something chosen especially for her – despite it being wonderfully fitted, as far as I can tell.

    • Karen Clark

My friend said it looked like something she could buy at Hot Topic. Great for a corporate Christmas party.

    • Skippymom1

We couldn’t get past the way the lights were reflecting off of it. We don’t have a 3-D TV, but we felt like we were being lasered while she presented.
At least she had the good grace to step out the shot when Jared Leto accepted the Oscar. Or that was a REALLY astute camera person.

    • kategs

Even with all the jewels this reads clean and elegant to me. And she can pull it off. So again I disagree with most of the commenters. ah well.

      • marlie

There are a few of us who like it. ;)

        • kategs

Yay! I just feel that lately I disagree with just about everybody and cannot decide whether it’s because I’m stubborn or old or both!

    • Trickytrisha

She’s ready for a Game Of Thrones style jousting match for ladies. Hm, who would her opponent be? I can so see her and Whoopi Goldberg saddling up and galloping round the lists.

    • kbshee

Disco ball smashed on her front.

    • Imasewsure

I like the hooker shoes… but not much else here… not bad, but not good enough either from a RC Fashionista!!

    • SorayaS

Her head looks amazing, the shoes look fierce, loving the jewels but the dress looks cheap. I’ve been railing against how boring the dresses were last night but I think the dress would have looked more striking without the embellishment (or perhaps just a band around her waist)

    • E. D.

I like this dress much, much better than last year’s dress. Her hair looks like an afterthought though.

    • Sunraya

I actually liked it, but perhaps I am comparing it to last year’s debacle. I really liked her after hours dress!! That was a knock out on her.

    • Call me Bee

I don’t know if it’s because of the dress, hair or what, but she looks to be about 45 years old in these pics, and sh’es barely in her 30s. What the heck? (Awesome, awesome shoes, however…)

    • allcapsERINN

      Disco Ball Boobs

    • Carly Clement

The thing that makes this worse is that she looked so AMAZING in a black and white Viktor and Rolf dress later that evening!!

    • Anathema_Device

Oh! I really loved this dress. I thought it was cool looking. There was so much beading & delicate embellishment on the red carpet that this stood out in a good way…for me anyway.

      • pookiesmom

Totally agree. I guess I’m in the minority, but I really like this.

    • Alfred Cox

Just a black dress with a chest plate attached to it. And why is she rocking this “Actress with a capital A” drag all of a sudden. Its like all of her cool’s been sucked out of her and as a result we get this big armored nothing.

    • kat89

It looks like last years dress in a different fabric.

    • Jenna621

Why did she leave RZ? Does anyone know? Seeing as Zoe made Anne look as exquisite as she did when she hosted the Oscars, I can’t believe she switched stylists. Would be even better if Zoe declined to style her anymore because she’s gotten so full of herself. :-)

      • demidaemon

I would love to know the gossip as well.

      • Little_Olive

        “She” who, Rachel?

    • bassfemme

I was half wondering if there were LED lights tucked in there.

    • TerryMH

I love this because it looks like armor and I imagine her looking at herself in the mirror before leaving the house and saying “Bring it Hatha-haters, I’m ready for you this time.”

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I just don’t have a strong reaction to this-it’s a meh for me.

    • largishbearishAtlish

      I yawned.

    • kalisa

Was horrible on camera, too, with all those stage lights glaring off of it.

    • andi56

You say it does nothing, but I’m sure that bodice is capable of causing seizures.

    • icm

it was hard to decide whether I liked it or not because as soon as the lights hit her while she was presenting I was temporarily blinded by the rays of light .

    • RuthGo

I liked this. It was a little edgy and fits her really well. I thought it was a good choice for someone who was there as the past winner/presenter. Way better than last year which is a shame because, well, that’s when she won.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I loved it. Really. She looked chic and fierce. And sparkly.

    • OffToSeeHim

      I’m over that haircut.

    • quiltrx

I said to my hubby, and he heartily agreed–”well, that is certainly HER dress.” It was so much more expensive-looking on stage with all those lights hitting it. On her, I like it.

    • roche

Anytime your boobs are closer to your navel than your collarbones in a dress you should either change your bra or change your dress.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Bedazzle me this, Batman!

    • elzatelzabelz

I like that it is different. It’s not as good as some of her past Oscar dresses-that Armani Prive from a couple years ago will always be a fave-but, was interesting is a new way.

    • kerryev

I don’t much like it but it kicks the pants of that horrible apron from last year.

    • EEKstl

I liked it. But she needs a new hairstyle. Stat.

    • Little_Olive

I don’t hate it as much -last year’s does not even compare-, but she can do so, so, so much better.
      That hair ages her.

    • kt

Rockstar dress, on someone tan and blonde and a little aggressive this would be fab.

    • Lilyana_F

Yep, droopy boobs is never the look.

    • diamond dog

i kinda love the rocker gal style. goes well with the shoes

    • peachy

looks really great on stage, with all the lights and whatnot bouncing off her armored chestplate. far more attractive on stage than on the carpet.
